RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Nanoparticle formulations development for anti-aging treatment is increasing due to their multifunctional properties. These nanotechnological strategies can target cellular/ molecular pathways of the skin affected by the aging process. However, a review of these strategies is required to discuss their efficacy/safety and establish the needs for further research. OBJECTIVE: Innovative nanotechnological advances for skin anti-aging/rejuvenation are summarized and discussed in this work. METHODS: The information in this review was extracted from recent and relevant studies using nanotechnology for anti-aging treatment from scientific databases. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION: Results show an enhanced skin anti-aging effect of actives-loaded nanoparticles of next generation (nanostructured lipid carriers, fullerenes, transfersomes, protransfersomes, niosomes, ethosomes, transethosomes, glycerosomes, phytosomes) compared with nanocarriers of first generation or conventional formulations. Anti-aging active ingredients such as, flavonoids (rutin, hesperidin, quercetagetine, quercetin, epigallocatechin-3-gallate, myricetin, silibinin, curcuminoids, isoflavones); vitamins (E, D3, CoQ10); acids (hyaluronic, ascorbic, rosmarinic, gallic); extracts (Citrus sinensis, Tagetes erecta L., Achillea millefolium L., Citrus aurantium L., Glycyrrhiza glabra L., Aloe vera, propolis earned by Apis mellifera); and other compounds (adenosine, beta-glucan, heptapetide DEETGEF, resveratrol, cycloastragenol, melatonin, botulinum toxin, grapeseed oil), have been successfully entrapped into nanoparticles for skin rejuvenation. This encapsulation has improved their solubility, bioavailability, stability, permeability, and effectivity for skin anti-aging, providing a controlled drug release with minimized side effects. CONCLUSION: Recent studies show a trend of anti-aging herbal active ingredients-loaded nanoparticles, enhancing the moisturizing, antioxidant, regenerating and photoprotective activity of the skin. Suitable safety/shelf-life stability of these novel formulations is key to a successful translation to the clinic/industry.

BACKGROUND: A new hyaluronic acid (HA) was appraised to improve forehead horizontal lines (FHL). Histological analysis correlated the gel distribution with clinical findings and also with wrinkle depth, 48 h and 12 months after HA application. METHODS: The new filler composed by 24 mg/ml of HA cross-linked with BDDE 2.0 ppm was injected into the subcutaneous fat, just beneath the dermis, through a retrograde backflow injection technique applied in sequence. Biopsies were taken with a 3.0-mm-diameter skin punch before HA application, 48 h and 12 months after HA application for histological evaluation. RESULTS: Subcutaneous application created a compact cylindrical filament as pattern of gel distribution, which acted as strut raising the FHL to the level of the surrounding tissues. Diameter average of the filament 48 h after HA application was 1.18 mm and at month twelve 0.34 mm. The residual amount of the gel at month twelve ensured the long acting of the HA into the subcutaneous fat. FHL depth of 251.83 µm before HA application and 190.20 µm after 12 months indicated that the residual amount of gel at month twelve still projected FHL. CONCLUSION: High cohesivity of HA and low density of forehead subcutaneous fat caused the gel to take the form of a compact cylindrical filament. The small amount of gel still presenting into the subcutaneous fat 12 months after application validated the long acting of the HA. Evidence-based analysis showed that this new filler might be considered a safe alternative for improvement in the FHL. ABSTRACT. Introduction: the cusp pattern and the deflecting wrinkle are two morphological traits whose expression and variability contribute to the morphological configuration of the occlusal surface of deciduous and permanent lower molar teeth. The objective of the present study was to estimate the correlation between cusp pattern and deflecting wrinkle in six ethnic groups from southwestern Colombia. Methods: analysis of 480 plaster models corresponding to 100 mixed Caucasoid mestizos from Cali (50 men and 50 women), 60 Afro-descendants from Cali (34 women and 26 men), 84 Afro-descendants from Puerto Tejada (42 women and 42 men), 116 Afro-descendants from Villa Rica (57 men and 59 women), 60 misak indigenous (37 women and 23 men) and 60 nasa indigenous (35 women and 25 men). Results: there were high frequencies (over 60%) of cusp pattern (Y expression) and deflecting wrinkle (grades 2 and 3) in deciduous first lower molars, mid frequencies (between 40 and 59%) of cusp pattern (Y and + expressions) and deflecting wrinkle (grades 1 and 2) in permanent first lower molars, and mid frequencies (between 40 and 59%) of cusp pattern (+ and X expressions) and deflecting wrinkle (grades 1 and 2) in permanent lower second molars. Conclusions: these frequencies suggest a trend in cusp pattern, which may vary according to the degree of expression of the deflecting wrinkle. This tendency consists of the Y cusp pattern when the deflecting wrinkle is expressed in grades 2 and 3. Bilaterally was observed and there was no sexual dimorphism.

Introducción: el patrón cuspídeo y el pliegue acodado son dos rasgos morfológicos cuya expresión y variabilidad contribuyen con la configuración morfológica de la superficie oclusal de los dientes molares inferiores temporales y permanentes. El objetivo del presente estudio consistió en estimar la correlación entre el patrón cuspídeo y el pliegue acodado en seis grupos étnicos del suroccidente colombiano. Métodos: se observaron 480 modelos de yeso correspondientes a 100 mestizos caucasoides de Cali (50 mujeres y 50 hombres), 60 afrodescendientes de Cali (34 mujeres y 26 hombres), 84 afrodescendientes de Puerto Tejada (42 mujeres y 42 hombres), 116 afrodescendientes de Villa Rica (59 mujeres y 57 hombres), 60 indígenas misak (37 mujeres y 23 hombres) y 60 indígenas nasa (35 mujeres y 25 hombres). Resultados: se presentaron frecuencias altas (mayores al 60%) de patrón cuspídeo (expresión Y) y pliegue acodado (grados 2 y 3) de los primeros molares inferiores temporales, frecuencias medias (entre 40 y 59%) de patrón cuspídeo (expresiones Y y +) y pliegue acodado (grados 1 y 2) de los primeros molares inferiores permanentes, y frecuencias medias (entre 40 y 59%) de patrón cuspídeo (expresiones + y X) y pliegue acodado (grados 1 y 2) de los segundos molares inferiores permanentes. Conclusiones: con base en dichas frecuencias, se observó una tendencia en la configuración del patrón cuspídeo, el cual puede variar de acuerdo al grado de expresión del pliegue acodado; dicha tendencia consiste en el patrón cuspídeo Y cuando el pliegue acodado se expresa en los grados 2 y 3. Se observó bilateralidad y no hubo dimorfismo sexual.

Abstract Diospyros kaki L.f. belonging to family Ebenaceae, commonly known as persimmon is used as a medicinal plant in Chinese traditional medicine since many years for different ailments including cosmetics and dermatologic applications. Traditionally this plant is used to treat different skin conditions including pimples, skin eruptions and eczema. Present interest has been focused toward use of natural bioactive compounds in various curative and beautifying applications in dermatological and cosmeceutical disciplines. The objective of this article is to present cumulative data on potential use of D. kaki for its possible role in dermatologic and cosmetic applications. Scientific data has revealed an excellent position of D. kaki in both dermatology and cosmetic discipline making it a valuable choice in respective field. Active principles from different plant parts have shown to possess anti-inflammatory, antiallergic, photo-protective, and anti-wrinkle effects with appreciable activities against tyrosinase, elastase, and collagenase enzymes. Promising antioxidant activity and skin whitening potential, augmented by reduction in sebum contents, and reduction in size and number of skin pores make it a suitable choice as cosmetic ingredient. Data has been summarized and presented on available molecular mechanism that can contribute toward phytoconstituents usage in cosmetics and dermatology mediated by different cellular pathways. Crude extracts and some of phytochemical obtained from this plant such as isoquercitrin and hyperin have better reported activities than well-known cosmetic ingredients viz., arbutin, kojic acid and hydroquinone with possibility of having no side effects. Photo protection against degenerative effects of UVA, UVB and gamma radiation can help skin to fight well against oxidative stress and reactive oxygen species. Further investigation need to be directed toward human subjects for evaluation of these reported activities for obtaining optimum commercial and industrial benefits from this valuable plant.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: When evaluating skin care products for human skin, quantitative test methods need to be simple, precise and reliable. Optical coherence tomography (OCT), provides high-resolution sectional images of translucent materials to a depth of a few millimeters, a technique usually applied to medical measurements in ophthalmology and dermatology. This study aimed to demonstrate the application of OCT as the main technique for monitoring changes in skin topography during tests of a wrinkle-reduction product in humans. METHODS: We used a commercial OCT apparatus to perform clinical examinations of skin roughness in treated and non-treated sites in the periorbital region of thirty human voluntaries who were using an anti-aging product commercially available: Natura Chronos® Flavonóides de Passiflora 45+ FPS15, from Natura Cosméticos, Brazil. Measurements were performed days 0, 7, 14 and 28 of treatment. Equipment and software allowed real-time recording of skin roughness parameters and wrinkle depths. RESULTS: The OCT measurements have allowed the monitoring of changes in skin roughness, which have shown reduction in treated sites around 10%. The obtained depth distributions also indicate reduction in the occurrence of wrinkles deeper than 170 µm. The verified results are consistent with those typically obtained after successful treatment with modern anti-aging products. CONCLUSION: By using the OCT technique, it was possible to quantify changes in skin roughness and in the distribution of depths of skin wrinkles, with adequate sensitivity. OCT imaging allows the direct visualization of the skin topography with resolution of micrometers, a reliable and interactive tool for clinical use. Therefore, for the first time, we demonstrated the use of OCT technique to verify the efficacy of cosmetic products in real time.
