RESUMEN

This study explains workplace conflicts (interpersonal and task-related) as antecedents of knowledge-hiding behaviors. Moreover, a relational psychological contract breach is a mediator between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behavior. For empirical evidence, data were collected from research and development institutions in Pakistan. The results confirm the significant association between conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors and the mediating role of relational psychological contract breach. The objective of this study is to investigate the impact of workplace conflicts (interpersonal conflict and task-related conflict) on knowledge-hiding behaviors (evasive hiding, playing dumb, and rationalized hiding). Besides, a relational psychological contract breach is used as a mediator between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. By using a simple random sampling technique and time lag strategy, the data were collected from 408 employees working in research and development institutions in Pakistan. For analyses, this study employed partial least squares structural equation modeling statistical technique by using SmartPls-3 software. The results of the study confirm the significant relationship between workplace conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. Relational psychological contract breach also significantly mediates the relationship between conflicts and knowledge-hiding behaviors. However, this study found an insignificant association between interpersonal conflict and evasive knowledge hiding.

RESUMEN

Interpersonal conflicts at workplace are increasing in relation to high competitiveness and pressures at work, mainly connected with labor market globalization. Their manifestation is multifaceted in relation to different working conditions and they not only hinder health, performance, and job satisfaction, but can also harm people's rights and dignity. The study analyses issues related to work conflicts and adverse health consequences in 1,493 workers who approached a hospital service for work-related stress and harassment over a 3-year period. The subjects were examined according to a broad protocol covering working conditions, sources of conflict and negative actions suffered, and resulting impact on health status. Many critical conditions were reported in all occupational sectors with some differentiation in relation to gender (women more at risk) and employment status. Higher qualified levels were more exposed to experiencing severe personal adversities aimed at their progressive expulsion or resignation, with consequent higher risk of chronic adjustment disorders, while lower levels reported more stressful conditions in terms of interpersonal disputes and greater interference in the home-work interface. The study can provide useful indications for a better understanding of workplace conflicts in order to set up the most appropriate actions to manage and prevent them.

RESUMEN

The impact of workplace conflicts on sick leave is largely unknown. We studied the associations between conflicts and physician-certified sick leave in a randomly drawn general working population sample. Eligible respondents were interviewed in 2009, 2013, and 2016 and were registered with an employee relationship ≥50 working days in the national sick-leave register the year following the survey interviews (n = 22,088 observations/13,731 respondents). We used mixed-effects logistic regression models (adjusted for sex, age, education level, occupation and sick leave days) to assess the associations of self-reported conflicts with superiors or colleagues and subsequent physician-certified sick leave of 1-16 days (i.e., low-level sick leave (LLSL)) and more than 16 days (i.e., high-level sick leave (HLSL)). Conflicts with superiors were associated with LLSL (OR = 1.73 95% CI 1.15-2.62) and HLSL (OR = 1.84 95% CI 1.15-2.94). The corresponding ORs for conflicts involving colleagues were weaker and largely non-significant. The population risks of LLSL and HLSL attributable to conflicts with superiors were 1.95% (95% CI 0.55-3.41) and 3.98% (95% CI 2.08-5.91), respectively. Conflicts with superiors appear to be an important risk factor for sick leave among employees. Organizations are well-advised to develop policies and competencies to prevent and manage conflicts at work.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Conflicts in nursing workplace are frequent and can be resolved by individuals or groups. The purpose of this study was to develop a valid and reliable measure for the Workplace Conflicts among Emergency Department Nurses (WCEDN). METHODS: A three-stage mixed methods study was conducted: (a) In-depth interviews with emergency department (ED) nurses were performed and themes were extracted from the data (b) Findings of the content analysis in combination with results of a literature review were examined, and preliminary instrument items were developed. The initial instrument comprised 50 items. (c) Content validity, face validity, content validity ratio, content validity index, and construct validity using exploratory factor analysis were performed. RESULTS: Subscales in the final instrument included Intrapersonal Conflict, Intragroup Conflict, Intergroup Conflict, and Causes of Conflict. Reliability of the instrument was .86, and the feasibility was 96.8%. CONCLUSIONS: The final 40-item WCEDN demonstrated strong psychometric properties.

RESUMEN

Background: Only few authors have analyzed the impact of workplace conflicts and the resulting stress on the risk of developing cardiovascular disorders. The goal of this study was to analyze the association between workplace conflicts and cardiovascular disorders in patients treated by German general practitioners. Methods: Patients with an initial documentation of a workplace conflict experience between 2005 and 2014 were identified in 699 general practitioner practices (index date). We included only those who were between the ages of 18 and 65 years, had a follow-up time of at least 180 days after the index date, and had not been diagnosed with angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, coronary heart diseases, or stroke prior to the documentation of the workplace mobbing. In total, the study population consisted of 7,374 patients who experienced conflicts and 7,374 controls for analysis. The main outcome measure was the incidence of angina pectoris, myocardial infarction, and stroke correlated with workplace conflict experiences. Results: After a maximum of five years of follow-up, 2.9% of individuals who experienced workplace conflict were affected by cardiovascular diseases, while only 1.4% were affected in the control group (p-value <0.001). Workplace conflict was associated with a 1.63-fold increase in the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases. Finally, the impact of workplace conflict was higher for myocardial infarction (OR=2.03) than for angina pectoris (OR=1.79) and stroke (OR=1.56). Conclusions: Overall, we found a significant association between workplace conflicts and cardiovascular disorders.
