RESUMEN
Despite the diagnostic capacity of ultrasonography (US) in cases of bovine enzootic hematuria (BEH), it has been underused in the medical clinic for ruminants. Studies comparing ultrasound findings in healthy animals (HA) with subclinical (SCH) and clinical (CH) BEH are scarce in the literature. As a result, the present work aims to describe the US findings of cattle at different stages of BEH evolution, evaluating the diagnostic capacity and precocity of the technique. The study was carried out on five rural properties in the municipalities of Rio Preto and Bom Jardim de Minas - MG, Brazil, using 46 dairy cattle, females over 18 months of age, evaluated and classified as G1/CH, G2/SCH and G3/HA, according to history, clinical examination and urinalysis, with subsequent ultrasound analysis of the bladder. The mean bladder wall thickness was 36.50 mm in G1/CH, 33.53 mm in G2/SCH and 37.93 mm in G3/HA. Irregular walls were observed in 53.33 % (8/15) of G1/CH, 27 0.78 % (5/18) of G2/SCH and 38.46 % (5/13) of G3/HA. Loss of the architecture of the urothelium layers was observed in 53.33 % (8/15) of G1/CH, 33.33 % (6/18) of G2/SCH and 38.46 % (5/13) of G3/HA. Multifocal and Grade I lesion were the most common. Ultrasonography allowed the identification of lesions in 38.46 % of animals that did not present hematuria and in 33.33 % of animals that presented occult blood and proved to be an efficient technique for detecting pre-clinical cases of BEH, allowing easy identification. and early onset of BEH cases.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the additional contribution of the Mitrofanoff channel to health-related quality of life (HRQoL). METHODS: Between 2005 and 2009, we conducted a retrospective study on 10 pediatric patients who underwent Mitrofanoff surgery for neurogenic bladder and 11 control patients using urethral catheterization. We evaluated HRQoL using questionnaires tailored for various age groups, with higher scores indicating better QoL. RESULTS: The mean age in the patient group was 12.8 years and 10.7 years in the control group (p = 0.103). Shunt use and wheelchair dependency were similar between groups (p = 0.217 and p = 0.505, respectively). Diaper use showed no significant difference (p = 0.256). Notably, 50% of the patient group performed self-catheterization compared to 9.1% in the control group, a significant difference (p = 0.038). Prophylaxis application was significantly higher in the control group (p = 0.049). HRQoL scores were not significantly different between surgery and control groups in children (p = 0.251) and adolescents (p = 0.831), with Cronbach's α values indicating high reliability of the HRQoL scale. CONCLUSIONS: Although the procedure shows potential in enhancing independence, particularly in self-catheterization, the impact on overall HRQoL is not significantly different from the control group.

Various animal models are used for research; however, non-human primates are well suited for biomedical research owing to their genetic homology with humans. The objective of this research was the anatomical characterization of red howler's kidneys in view of the scarcity of information in the literature. Protocols were approved by the Committee for Ethics in the Use of Animals at the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro (number 018/2017). The study was conducted at the Laboratory of Teaching and Research in Domestic and Wild Animal Morphology, Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro. Specimens of Alouatta guariba clamitans were collected from the Serra dos Órgãos National Park road in Rio de Janeiro and subsequently frozen. Four adult cadavers (two males and two females) were used, identified, and injected with a 10% formaldehyde solution. Later, the specimens were dissected, and measurements and topography of the kidneys and renal vessels were recorded. The kidneys of A. g. clamitans resemble a "bean seed," with a smooth surface. The longitudinal section shows two distinct regions, cortical and medullary; in addition, the kidneys are unipyramidal. The renal arteries emerged from the abdominal aorta as a single vessel posterior to the renal veins. The renal veins drained directly into the caudal vena cava as a single vessel in all specimens.

Background: The urinary tract is composed by kidneys, urinary bladder and urethra. The kidneys produce urine that achieve urinary bladder by ureters. These have the origin in the renal pelvis, run through the retroperitoneum, end up at the dorsolateral superficies of the urinary bladder, and empty at the trigone. Ureters abnormalities are the rarest congenital defects in the canine urinary tract and ureteroceles are cystic dilatations of the distal segment of the ureter that could be associated to partial or complete urinary obstructions and could lead to megaureter and hydronephrosis. So, the aim of the present study was to describe a case of megaureter by intramural ureteral ectopia in a bitch. Case: A 1-year-old-and-8-month bitch Akita, weighing 18 kg, was referred to the Uniube Veterinary Hospital with vaginal secretion, prostration, hypodipsia, hyporexia and pyrexia related by the tutor. On physical examination, an increase in vulva volume and a vaginal discharge were observed. Nevertheless, others physical exams, blood count and biochemical tests were considered to be within normal parameters. Urinalysis showed cloudy aspect, proteinuria, occult blood, erythrocytes, pyuria, leucocytes, and discreet presence of bacteria. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed a megaureter with right uterocele and excretory urography showed absence of glomerular filtration by right kidney. The patient was submitted to surgery for right kidney and ureter exeresis. Histopathology evaluation showed intense dilation of the ureter and severe multifocal renal fibrosis. The surgery was well succeeded, and the patient recovered completely. Discussion: Once megaureter are associated with congenital abnormalities like ectopic ureter and ureterocele, it is usually diagnosed in young patients with medium age of 10 months, which is below the age of the patient in this case report. Additionally, in the patient here reported, the unilateral alteration could explain the absence of kidney fail symptoms. In more than 90% of the cases, the ureteral ectopia was associated with multiple anomalies in the urinary tract, as was observed in this patient, that presented besides ectopic ureter, ureterocele, megaureter and renal dystrophy. All these morphological alterations made impossible the complete urine elimination, which predispose to urinary tract infection, that was observed in this report. According to literature, urinary tract anomalies are associated with infection in 64 to 85% and 50% of the cases also present hydronephrosis and hydroureter. It was also described that ureteral ectopia is diagnosed by visualization of hydroureter in abdominal ultrasonography. The findings present in this report differs a little, once the right kidney was atrophic possibly by malformation or even so by a chronic renal lesion due to the difficulty in urine flow. The excretory urography showed no filtration in the right kidney, indicating non-functionality that was confirmed by histopathology, in which was observed small glomerulus and large amount of connective tissue deposition. In cases of unilateral megaureter with ipsilateral kidney commitment, there is indication of nephroureterectomy, that was performed in the patient of the present report. As far as we know, this is the first report of megaureter, ureterocele and ectopia ureteral together in the same patient. In conclusion, the procedure was secure, efficient and promote a better quality of life for the patient and prevent the recurrence of urinary tract infections.

The male urogenital system is composed of the reproductive system and the urinary tract; they have an interconnected embryonic development and share one of their anatomical components, the urethra. This system has a highly complex physiology deeply interconnected with the circulatory and nervous systems, as well as being capable of adapting to environmental variations; it also undergoes changes with aging and, in the case of the reproductive system, with seasonality. The stroma is an essential component in this physiological plasticity and its complexity has increased with the description in the last decade of a new cell type, the telocyte. Several studies have demonstrated the presence of telocytes in the organs of the male urogenital system and other systems; however, their exact function is not yet known. The present review addresses current knowledge about telocytes in the urogenital system in terms of their locations, interrelationships, possible functions and pathological implications. It has been found that telocytes in the urogenital system possibly have a leading role in stromal tissue organization/maintenance, in addition to participation in stem cell niches and an association with the immune system, as well as specific functions in the urogenital system, lipid synthesis in the testes, erythropoiesis in the kidneys and the micturition reflex in the bladder. There is also evidence that telocytes are involved in pathologies in the kidneys, urethra, bladder, prostate, and testes.

After clinical examination, cystitis was suspected, and a complete blood count, urinalysis, and abdominal ultrasound was requested. The blood count and creatinine were within the reference values. The presenceof struvite crystals were found on urinalysis. Ultrasound examination revealed a tortuous, dilated right ureter from therenal pelvis to the urinary bladder; no uroliths were identified as a cause of potential obstruction, but the ipsilateral kidneyshowed increased cortical echogenicity, loss of corticomedullary definition, and moderate pelvic dilation. These findingssupported a presumptive diagnosis of ectopic ureter. For the purpose of confirming this suspicion, excretory urography wasperformed, revealing unilateral ureteral dilation and radiopaque contrast uptake following the path of the urethra. It is estimated that more than 1 billion people worldwide have vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Vitamin D participates in bone mineralization, and is therefore important in osteoporosis, osteomalacia and rickets prevention. However, vitamin D deficiency could also be associated with several other pathologies. The present study aimed to investigate the relationships between vitamin D deficiency and vitamin D deficiency-related disorders in patients. In addition, this study aims to verify if countries with low solar incidence have higher extraskeletal disease death rates when compared to countries with high solar incidence. The vitamin D concentrations were obtained from the Heart Hospital database (Natal/Brazil). The relationship between solar incidenceand death rate for vitamin D deficiency-related disorders was verified. Death rate data were extracted from the 'World Life Expectancy' repository and data about solar incidence were obtained from NASA's Surface Meteorology and Solar Energy project. Thesedata were statistically processed with IBM SPSS v23.0 software and R programming language. Our results showed that patients with vitamin D insufficiency/deficiency showed significantly more bone diseases, thyroid diseases, hypercholesterolemy, hypertriglyceridemia, cancers, diabetes, hepatobiliary diseases, and urinary system diseases. Moreover, countries with high solar incidence have low cancer and multiple sclerosis death rates. This work suggests the participation of vitamin D and sunlight incidence inseveral diseases.

The use of herbal medicine to relieve symptoms and reduce symptomatic recurrence of UTIs is a valid and promising alternative, especially Vaccinium macrocarpon L. (cranberry) specie. However, despite the advances and potential of these species, it is necessary to establish their mechanisms of action. Still, the primary training of health professionals to make a correct, assertive and safe prescription is fundamental.(AU)

Galaxias maculatus (Jenyns, 1842) is a widespread freshwater fish and an important component of the economically important whitebait fisheries across the Southern Hemisphere. We report a new myxosporean parasite (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) infecting the kidney of G. maculatus from northwestern Patagonia (Argentina). Ortholinea lauquen sp. nov. was characterized using myxospore morphology, morphometrics and small subunit rDNA (ssrDNA) sequence data. Our ssrDNA phylogenetic analyses showed that O. lauquen sp. nov. is a member of the oligochaete-freshwater urinary tract clade and basal to a clade containing 4 different spore morphotypes (Chloromyxum, Myxidium, Zschokkella, Hoferellus). We explored host-parasite relationships at the macro- and microscale by analyzing the distribution, tissue tropism and pathology of O. lauquen sp. nov. Prevalence was relatively low (7%) by microscopy, but PCR detection revealed hidden levels of infection (49%), with the highest detection in lakes Morenito and Moreno (63-90%, Río Negro Province). The only locality negative by both microscopy and PCR was the Caleufu River (Neuquén Province), suggesting differences in fish life history traits (landlocked vs. potamodromous) or preference of the putative obligate invertebrate host for lentic habitats. O. lauquen sp. nov. sporulates in the renal tubules and occasionally in the glomerular space. The plasmodia frequently occluded the tubule lumina, and cellular necrosis and disintegration of the epithelium were observed. O. lauquen sp. nov. could represent a potential threat to G. maculatus culture under intensive farming conditions.

Guinea pigs are animal models widely used in research related to developmental biology. The objective of this work was to demonstrate the process of formation and differentiation of urinary organs in females of the species in the prenatal period. Four females were used at 25, 30, 45 and >65 DG (days of gestation). The animals were dissected, and then macroscopic and microscopic descriptions of the urinary organs were performed. At 25 DG metanephros were present in the urogenital crest into the abdominal cavity. Collecting ducts and glomerular precursor cells could be visualized. After this period, metanephros underwent microstructural modifications to form the kidneys at the end of the prenatal period. After 30 DG, the renal parenchyma already had a cortex, where the glomerulus and proximal convoluted tubules were present; and the medulla, where distal convoluted tubules, collecting ducts, and pelvis were present. The pelvis of each kidney was drained by the ureters. The ureters also underwent tissue differentiation to be differentiated (mucosa with transitional epithelium and lamina propria of connective tissue, muscular, and adventitia) at the end of the prenatal period. The urinary vesicle also underwent tissue changes to form the tunics similar to those found in the ureters, with emphasis on the greater volume of the muscular tunica and the lamina propria that constituted the submucosa in this organ. The pelvic urethra was evidenced by a mucosa lined by transitional epithelium, submucosa, muscular and adventitia. Finally, a partial clitoral urethra and a urethral meatus in the prepuce of the clitoris were also evidenced. The urethral channel began to form with the emergence of the urethral plate and the urethral groove at 30 DG and thereafter with the fusion of the urethral folds to form a partially channeled urethra in the clitoris. A urethral meatus was observed in the most distal portion of the clitoral tissue, formed by the fusion of the prepuce. It is concluded that the urinary organs of guinea pig have similar development to that described in domestic animals, except for the partial clitoral urethra and evident urethral meatus.(AU)

Obstructive urolithiasis is a disease characterized by the presence of uroliths in the urinary tract, with consequent obstruction of excretion pathways. This paper described the epidemiological and clinical-pathological findings of 22 outbreaks of urolithiasis in growing-finishing pigs in Southern Brazil. All affected pigs were male and clinical presentation consisted of lethargy, dysuria, rectal prolapse, abdominal distention, peripheral cyanosis and reluctance to move. Clinical progression course ranged from 12 hours to one week, and the lethality rate was 100%. Gross changes were characterized by urinary bladder rupture associated with marked amount of yellowish liquid with ammoniacal odor (urine) in the abdominal cavity (uroperitoneum), as well as mild fibrin deposition on the surface of abdominal organs and hydronephrosis. Urinary uroliths ranging from 0.3 to 1cm in diameter were often observed obstructing the lumen of the penile urethra and sometimes those were free in the abdominal cavity. Histopathological findings included diffuse and marked urinary bladder edema and hemorrhage associated with inflammatory infiltrate of lymphocytes, plasma cells, and macrophages. Diffuse and marked necrosis of the mucosal epithelium was observed in the penile urethra. Intense fibrin deposition and inflammatory infiltrate of neutrophils were noted in the peritoneum, as well as in the serosa of the organs in the abdominal cavity. Uroliths were submitted to the method of qualitative determination of the mineral components, and were compatible with calcium carbonate and magnesium ammonium phosphate. Growing pigs ration analysis revealed low levels of calcium in relation to phosphorus, resulting in a Ca:P ratio of approximately 0.35:1. Histological findings and mineral analysis suggest that outbreaks of urolithiasis were related to a nutritional imbalance in the proportions of dietary calcium and phosphorus. The main cause of mortality was related to dehydration and uroperitoneum.(AU)

Objective To identify the responsible microorganisms for the urine infection and their antimicrobial resistance profile. Methods We carried out the research at the Laboratory-Diagnostic Center for Clinical Analysis (CDAC), located at the Nova Granada city. We analyzed samples of positive urocultures and their respective antibiograms, whose results were taken through laboratory reports from January 2017 to January 2018 and from the data gathering. We performed a data survey of the main pathological agents who causes infections in the urinary tract affecting the city's population, as well as the susceptibility profile of the antibiotics tested. Results Escherichia coli (N = 58/136, 43%) was the most frequent uropathogen identified, followed by Enterobacter sp. (N = 30/136, 22%), Klebsiella sp. (N = 15/136, 11%), Shigella sp. (N = 10/136, 7%), Proteus vulgaris (N = 6/136, 4,5%), Citrobacter sp. (N = 5/136; 3,5%), Providencia sp. (N = 4/136, 3%), Proteus mirabilis (N = 4/136, 3%), Edwardsiella sp. (N = 2/136, 1.5%), and Proteus sp. = 2/136, 1.5%). Oxacillin and nalidixic acid showed lower inhibitory power against the found uropathogens. Conclusion Escherichia coli was the most frequent uropathogen found, followed by Enterobacter sp, Klebsiella sp and Shigella sp. We demonstrate with the data reported here that the etiology of urinary infections of our research is similar to the found in other cities. However, the antimicrobial resistance profile of these uropathogens may have different characteristics according to the history of antibiotics use in each community. It is therefore important that epidemiological data be periodically disclosed with the intention of assisting the medical community
Introduction: Urinary tract infection (UTI) is one of the most prevalent diseases in clinical practice. Objective: To identify the main etiologic agents and the frequency of antibiotic resistance by microorganisms isolated from urine culture and sensitivity in patients with IVU in a hospital primary care. Materials and Methods. Descriptive cross-sectional study, from a random sample of patients with UTI in La Virginia, Risaralda, from April 1, 2014 to March 31, 2015. Bacteria isolated from all processed urine cultures and the results of susceptibility were evaluated. Frequencies and proportions were established. For data analysis was used SPSS Statistics 22. Results: A total of 1563 urine cultures were performed in the study period, of which 329 (21.0%) showed further growth to 100,000 UFC. Higher frequencies of resis tance were observed for E. coli to cephalothin (75.8%), ampicillin (72.6%) and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole (55.3%). In the 296 randomized patients it was found that the most common UTI was cystitis (70.3%) and 50.7% were not prescribed any antimicrobial. The use of anti-ulcer is associated with increased probability of inappropriate use of antibiotics (OR:4.28; 95% CI:1.070-17.153; p=0.04). Conclusions: There is a high bacterial resistance to first-line antibiotics for treatment of UTIs, suggesting the importance of identifying microorganisms and their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles to select which use better approach.

ABSTRACT: Guinea pigs are animal models widely used in research related to developmental biology. It is concluded that the urinary organs of guinea pig have similar development to that described in domestic animals, except for the partial clitoral urethra and evident urethral meatus.
The Patagonian seabass Acanthistius patachonicus (Jenyns, 1840) (Serranidae) is a marine fish valued for commercial and sport fisheries from Argentina. We report a new myxosporean (Cnidaria: Myxozoa) infecting the urinary system of the Patagonian seabass from San Antonio Bay, San Matías Gulf, on the Atlantic Ocean. The mature myxospores were subspherical, 8.2-11.0 µm × 7.9-11.0 µm and 7.7-9.0 µm in thickness; two subspherical polar capsules, 2.4-3.8 µm × 2.3-3.6 µm, with 3 to 4 turns of the polar tubule; openings on different valves in almost opposite directions. Ornamented shell valves exhibited 17-20 concentrically organized surface ridges. SSU rDNA phylogenetics analyses placed the new species in the freshwater urinary tract clade, clustering in a clade formed by Myxobilatus gasterostei (Parisi, 1912), Acauda hoffmani Whipps, 2011, and other Ortholinea spp. Based on spore morphology, site of infection, and molecular data, we described this myxozoan as Ortholinea concentrica n. sp.

Vesicle-uracal diverticulum is characterized by failure in closure the portion of the urachus located at the apex of the bladder, and by convex or conical luminal projection of the bladder apex, and may be of congenital or acquired origin associated with increased intraluminal pressure and lower urinary tract disorders. The present study aims to report a case of a feline with congenital vesicle-uracal diverticulum related to recurrent chronic cystitis. After the physical examination, it was verified that the cat had abdominal sensitivity and bladder with marked repletion. As treatment, the animal was probed through the urethra to perform vesical lavage, and later it was referred for imaging, conventional ultrasonography and contrast radiography. It was concluded that retrograde excretory uretrocistography was a good imaging diagnostic method for the identification of the disease.
