ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: In traditional Persian medicine (TPM), people often use herbal infusions as a dosage form to treat diseases related to hyperglycemia, known as 'dam-kardeh'. Traditionally, herbal preparations of Eryngium bungei Boiss. (E. b), Tragopogon buphthalmoides (DC.) Boiss. (T. b), Salvia hydrangea DC. ex Benth. (S. h), and Juniperus polycarpos K. Koch. (J. p) are used to manage diabetes in Iran. However, there is no evidence of their effectiveness in controlling glucose levels and their mechanisms remain unclear. AIM OF THE STUDY: This study aimed to investigate whether traditional doses of plant infusions can have hypoglycemic and/or anti-hyperglycemic effects during fasting and/or postprandial states and establish the basis for future research on their potential mechanisms of action. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The effects of traditional doses of herbal extracts on blood glucose levels in STZ-NA-induced hyperglycemic rats were investigated in 2-h acute tests during fasting and postprandial states (with a glucose load). In addition, the potential inhibitory effect in vitro of enzymes involved in relevant pathways, such as gluconeogenesis (fructose-1,6-bisphosphatase, FBPase and glucose-6-phosphatase, G6Pase), carbohydrate breakdown (intestinal α-glucosidases), and insulin sensitivity (protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B, PTP-1B) was evaluated. Acute toxicity tests were carried out and HPLC-SQ-TOF was used to analyze the chemical profiles of the plant extracts. RESULTS: In the fasting state, T. b, S. h, and E. b were as effective as glibenclamide in lowering blood glucose levels in hyperglycemic rats. Moreover, all three suppressed G6Pase and FBPase enzymatic activity by 90-97% and 80-91%, respectively. On the other hand, significant postprandial hypoglycemic efficacy was observed for E. b, S. h, and T. b. Based on the AUC values, T. b caused a reduction comparable to the therapeutic efficacy of repaglinide. When investigating the possible mechanisms of action involved in this activity, E. b, S. h, and T. b showed significant inhibition of PTP-1B in vitro (>70%). Finally, all plant extracts showed no signs of acute toxicity. Several compounds that may contribute to biological activities were identified, including phenolic acids and flavonoid glycosides. CONCLUSIONS: The present study supports the traditional use of T. b, E. b and S. h for the control of diabetes in the fasting and postprandial state. Moreover, these plants were found to be rich in bioactive compounds with hypoglycemic and antihyperglycemic activities. On the other hand, J. p, showed a modest effect only in the fasting state and after 90 min. Further studies are needed to expand these results by analyzing the chemical composition and using complementary experimental models.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Labisia pumila (Blume) Fern.-Vill, also known as Kacip Fatimah, is a traditional medicinal herb common throughout Southeast Asia. It is primarily used to facilitate childbirth and postpartum recovery in women. Additionally, it can also be used to treat dysentery, rheumatism, gonorrhea, and as an anti-flatulent. AIM OF THIS REVIEW: This article aims to provide a comprehensive review of the traditional uses, botany, cultivation, phytochemistry, pharmacological effects, practical applications, and potential uses of L. pumila (LP). Furthermore, we also explore the safety of this plant and its potential prospects for application. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The keywords "Labisia pumila," "Kacip Fatimah," and "Marantodes pumilum" were used to collect relevant information through electronic searches (including Elsevier, PubMed, Google Scholar, Baidu Scholar, CNKI, ScienceDirect, and Web of Science). RESULTS: This review summarizes 102 chemical components from different parts of the plant, including flavonoids, phenolic acids, saponins, and other chemical components. In addition, we also address the associated cultivation conditions, traditional uses, pharmacological effects and toxicity. A large number of reports indicate that LP has various pharmacological effects such as antioxidant, phytoestrogenic, anti-inflammtory, antimicrobial, anti-osteoporosis and anti-obesity properties. These results provide valuable references for future research on LP. In addition, LP is also a potential medicinal and edible plant, and is currently sold on the market as a dietary supplement. CONCLUSIONS: LP is a renowned traditional ethnic medicine with numerous pharmacological activities attributed to its bioactive components. Therefore, isolation and identification of the chemical components in LP can be a focus of our future research. Current studies have focused only on the effects of LP on estrogen deficiency-related diseases in women and bone diseases. There is no scientific evidence for other traditional uses. Therefore, it is important to further explore its pharmacological activities and fill the research gaps related to other traditional uses. Furthermore, research on its safety should be expanded to prepare clinical applications.

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: According to the theory of Qi and blood in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), the combination of Qi-reinforcing herbs and blood-activating herbs has a synergistic effect in improving blood stasis syndrome, especially in tumor treatment. The classic "Radix Astragali - Salvia miltiorrhiza" duo exemplifies this principle, renowned for invigorating Qi and activating blood flow, employed widely in tumor therapies. Our prior research underscores the potent inhibition of pancreatic tumor xenografts by the combination of Formononetin (from Radix Astragali) and Salvianolic acid B (from Salvia miltiorrhiza) in vitro. However, it remains unclear whether this combination can inhibit the abnormal vascularization of pancreatic tumors to achieve its anti-cancer effect. AIM OF THE STUDY: Abnormal vasculature, known to facilitate tumor growth and metastasis. Strategies to normalize tumor-associated blood vessels provide a promising avenue for anti-tumor therapy. This study aimed to unravel the therapeutic potential of Formononetin combined with Salvianolic acid B (FcS) in modulating pancreatic cancer's impact on endothelial cells, illuminate the underlying mechanisms that govern this therapeutic interaction, thereby advancing strategies to normalize tumor vasculature and combat cancer progression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A co-culture system involving Human Umbilical Vein Endothelial Cells (HUVECs) and PANC-1 cells was established to investigate the potential of targeting abnormal vasculature as a novel anti-tumor therapeutic strategy. We systematically compared HUVEC proliferation, migration, invasion, and lumenogenesis in both mono- and co-culture conditions with PANC-1 (H-P). Subsequently, FcS treatment of the H-P system was evaluated for its anti-angiogenic properties. Molecular docking was utilized to predict the interactions between Formononetin and Salvianolic acid B with RhoA, and the post-treatment expression of RhoA in HUVECs was assessed. Furthermore, we utilized shRhoA lentivirus to elucidate the role of RhoA in FcS-mediated effects on HUVECs. In vivo, a zebrafish xenograft tumor model was employed to assess FcS's anti-tumor potential, focusing on cancer cell proliferation, migration, apoptosis, and vascular development. RESULTS: FcS treatment demonstrated a significant, dose-dependent inhibition of PANC-1-induced alterations in HUVECs, including proliferation, migration, invasion, and tube formation capabilities. Molecular docking analyses indicated potential interactions between FcS and RhoA. Further, FcS treatment was found to downregulate RhoA expression and modulated the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in PANC-1-induced HUVECs. Notably, the phenotypic inhibitory effects of FcS on HUVECs were attenuated by RhoA knockdown. In vivo zebrafish studies validated FcS's anti-tumor activity, inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, metastasis, and vascular sprouting, while promoting tumor cell apoptosis. CONCLUSIONS: This study underscores the promising potential of FcS in countering pancreatic cancer-induced endothelial alterations. FcS exhibits pronounced anti-abnormal vasculature effects, potentially achieved through downregulation of RhoA and inhibition of the PI3K/Akt signaling pathway, thereby presenting a novel therapeutic avenue for pancreatic cancer management.

Objetivo: compreender as percepções e as ações de uma equipe multiprofissional em saúde quanto à prática da medicina tradicional indígena em uma Casa de Atenção à Saúde Indígena. Método: estudo qualitativo descritivo, realizado em uma de Casa de Apoio à Saúde Indígena em um município do Pará, que incluiu oito profissionais de uma equipe multiprofissional. A coleta de dados foi realizada no ano de 2018 e estes foram examinados pelo método da análise de conteúdo. Resultados: inserção e prática do cristianismo; ritos e lideranças xamânicas; e postura da equipe de multidisciplinar foram as categorias elencadas, que apontam os entendimentos e atuações da equipe multiprofissional e da organização espacial da Casa de Saúde do município. Considerações finais: há novos costumes e valores entre as etnias, em virtude da aproximação de grupos religiosos, cujas ações foram registradas e apreendidas pela equipe de trabalhadores em saúde.


Objective: understanding the perceptions and actions of a multi-professional health team regarding the practice of traditional indigenous medicine in an Indigenous Health Care Center. Method: this is a descriptive qualitative study carried out in an Indigenous Health Support Center in a municipality in the state of Pará, which included eight professionals from a multi-professional team. Data was collected in 2018 and examined using the content analysis method. Results: insertion and practice of Christianity; shamanic rites and leadership; and the attitude of the multidisciplinary team were the categories listed, which point to the understandings and actions of the multi-professional team and the spatial organization of the Health Center in the municipality. Final considerations: there are new customs and values among ethnic groups, due to the approach of religious groups, whose actions were recorded and apprehended by the team of health workers.


Objetivo: comprender las percepciones y acciones de un equipo multidisciplinario de salud sobre la práctica de la medicina tradicional indígena en una Casa de Atención para la Salud Indígena. Método: estudio descriptivo cualitativo, realizado en una Casa de Apoyo a la Salud Indígena de un municipio de Pará, que incluyó ocho profesionales de un equipo multidisciplinario. La recolección de datos se realizó en 2018 y los datos fueron sometidos al método de análisis de contenido. Resultados: inserción y práctica del cristianismo; ritos y líderes chamánicos; y actitud del equipo multidisciplinario fueron las categorías enumeradas, que indican la percepción y las acciones del equipo multidisciplinario y la organización espacial de la Casa de Salud del municipio. Consideraciones finales: existen nuevas costumbres y valores entre las etnias, debido a la presencia de grupos religiosos, el equipo de los trabajadores de la salud registró y aprendió las acciones de los indígenas.

BACKGROUND: Significant challenges are arising around how to best enable peer communities, broaden educational reach, and innovate in pedagogy. While digital education can address these challenges, digital elements alone do not guarantee effective learning. This study reports a blended learning approach integrating online and face-to-face components, guided by the Student Approaches to Learning framework. METHODS: This study was carried out investigating learning in first and second year medical students over two academic years, 2019/20 and 2020/21. We evaluated: (1) comparison of students engaged with blended learning and traditional learning; and (2) student learning engaged with blended learning approach over a two-year preclinical curriculum. A revised two-factor study process questionnaire (R-SPQ-2F) evaluated students' surface/deep learning before and after an academic year. Learning experience (LE) questionnaire was administered over the domains of learning engagement, and outcomes of learning approach. In-depth interviews were carried out to understand the context of students' responses to the R-SPQ-2F and LE questionnaires. RESULTS: The R-SPQ-2F analysis indicated first year students maintained deep learning but second year students became neutral across the academic year, regardless of learning approach, with workload contributing to this outcome. R-SPQ-2F sub-scales showed that students engaged with blended learning maintained an intrinsic interest to learning, as compared to traditional learning which led to surface learning motives. The LE questionnaire showed students engaged with blended learning had deeper subject interest, and more positive perceptions of workload, feedback, and effectively developed skills and knowledge. However, peer interactions from blended learning were significantly lacking. In-depth interviews revealed that the flexibility and multi-modality of blended learning enabled learning, but the best use of these features require teacher support. Online interactions could be cultivated through intentional institutional efforts. CONCLUSIONS: This study highlights the importance of designing blended learning that leverages technology-enabled flexibility while prioritising collaborative, learner-centred spaces for deep engagement and knowledge construction.

BACKGROUND: Individuals develop crucial survival knowledge in the juvenile phase, including understanding medicinal plants. The family context or contact with resources can influence this dynamic knowledge. By investigating the influence of these factors on young people's understanding of medicinal plants, we aimed to enhance our understanding of the knowledge-building process. METHODS: The study was conducted in three communities in the State of Alagoas, Brazil: Lagoa do Junco, Serrote do Amparo, and Brivaldo de Medeiros. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with young people aged between 11 and 19 to assess their knowledge of medicinal plants. We used a generalized linear mixed model (GLMM) with the number of therapeutic targets and known medicinal species (knowledge proxy) as response variables. As predictors, we included the number of individuals per family unit and the gender distribution within the famimunícpily (family context proxy), as well as dependence on the use (contact proxy). Location (city) was added as a fixed effect to the model. We investigated how knowledge of medicinal plants correlates with the practice of collecting these species. RESULTS: We did not identify a relationship between the number of individuals per household, gender distribution within the family, and the frequency of medicinal plant use with knowledge about these species. However, we observed a positive, albeit weak, correlation between knowledge of medicinal species and the number of species collected. CONCLUSION: These results highlight the importance of investigating how young people acquire knowledge about medicinal plants, emphasizing the complex interactions between humans and nature, and providing a basis for future research.

BACKGROUND: Arecae Semen is a traditional herbal medicine widely used in the medical service and food industry, but in recent years, the carcinogenesis of edible Arecae Semen chewing has aroused comprehensive attention, therefore it is necessary to evaluate its medicinal properties. Increasing evidence has shown that Arecae Semen Compounds (ASC) possess antidepressant ability. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of ASC in the treatment of depression. METHODS: We retrieved articles in eight databases from their inception to May 2024. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing the effects of ASC alone or combined with routine treatment in patients with depression were identified. The Cochrane risk of bias (ROB) tool (ROB 2) was used for assessing the ROB in the included trials. Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development, and Evaluation (GRADE) was used to assess the certainty of the evidence for the review outcomes. The outcomes included Hamilton depression rating scale (HAMD) scores, depression-related symptoms, serum dopamine levels, and adverse events. Stata 14.0 was used for data analysis calculating standardized mean difference (SMD) for continuous outcomes and relative risk (RR) for binary outcomes, both with 95% confidence intervals (CI). RESULTS: Nine RCTs involving 787 patients were included in this review. ASC lowered HAMD scores (SMD - 3.43, 95% CI - 5.24 to - 1.61; I2 = 95.2%, P < 0.001), alleviated depression-related symptoms, increased serum dopamine levels, and reduced the incidence of adverse events slightly (RR 0.18, 95% CI 0.04 to 0.77; I2 = 0, P = 0.775) compared with the control group. Publication bias might account for the asymmetrical presentation of funnel plots. Meta-regression analysis revealed that regarding HAMD scores, there was no significant relationship with duration, sample size, or treatment strategy. The evidence of the outcomes was of very low certainty. CONCLUSIONS: ASC may achieve better therapeutic effects, alleviate depression-related symptoms with a lower incidence of adverse events, and provide a potentially effective and safe complementary therapy for patients with depression. However, the evidence is very uncertain so further researches are required to validate our results and explore clinical implications of Arecae Semen in depth. Objective: This study aimed to explore the clinical efficacy and acupoint combinations of auricular pressure for treating type 2 diabetes. Methods: Eight common databases were searched for publications related to auricular pressure in type 2 diabetes as of November 2023. A meta-analysis was performed to assess the efficacy and safety of auricular pressure therapy. Data mining was used to analyze the core acupoints for auricular pressure. Results: Meta-analysis demonstrated that compared with the conventional treatment group, the combined auricular pressure and conventional treatment group had significantly reduced fasting blood glucose (mean difference [MD]: -0.93; 95% confidence interval [CI]: -1.17 to -0.68; p < 0.00001), 2-hour postprandial blood glucose (MD: -1.58; 95% CI: -2.04 to -1.12; p < 0.00001), glycated hemoglobin A1c (MD: -0.83; 95% CI: -1.19 to -0.48; p < 0.00001), total cholesterol (MD: -0.43; 95% CI: -0.72 to -0.14; p = 0.004), triglycerides (MD: -0.33; 95% CI: -0.64 to -0.03; p < 0.00001), systolic blood pressure (MD: -14.75; 95% CI: -24.46 to -5.05; p = 0.003), diastolic blood pressure (MD: -10.32; 95% CI: -20.14 to -0.50; p = 0.04), and body mass index (MD: -1.74; 95% CI: -2.61 to -0.87; p < 0.0001), while adverse events were comparable (RR: 0.84; 95% CI: 0.43 to 1.66; p = 0.61). Egger's test revealed no publication bias (p = 0.715). Data mining identified AH6a, TF4, AT4, CO18, and CO10 as core acupoints for treating type 2 diabetes with auricular pressure. Conclusion: Auricular pressure safely improves blood glucose and lipid levels, blood pressure, and body mass index in patients with type 2 diabetes. A regimen consisting of AH6a, TF4, AT4, CO18, and CO10 is expected to serve as a complementary treatment for type 2 diabetes. Microvascular angina (MVA) is the most common cause of cardiac ischemic chest pain in patients without obstructive coronary artery disease (CAD) and lacks of effective treatment means. Medicine food homology (MFH) involves substances with both nutritional and medicinal qualities that have the potential to improve MVA symptoms as medicines, dietary supplements. However, research on MFH formula (MFHF) for MVA is not available. The study aims to generate a core MFHF for MVA through data mining and offer scientific backing for the utilization of edible medications in the prevention and alleviation of MVA. 11 databases were utilized to construct a database of MFH drugs, and the MFHF was generated through frequency analysis, association rule analysis, and clustering analysis. The composition of the formula is Codonopsis Radix, Astragali Radix, Platycodonis Radix, Persicae Semen, Glycyrrhizae Radix Et Rhizoma, Angelicae Sinensis Radix, and Allii Macrostemonis Bulbus. Through network pharmacology and molecular docking, we identified five major active components of MFHF: Adenosine, Nonanoic Acid, Lauric Acid, Caprylic Acid, and Enanthic Acid, along with nine core targets (NFKB1, ALB, AKT1, ACTB, TNF, IL6, ESR1, CASP3, and PTGS) for the improvement of MVA. These 5 active components have various biological activities, such as reducing oxidative stress, anti-inflammation, analgesia effect, inhibiting platelet aggregation, vasodilatation, vascular endothelial protection, and cardio-protection. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses revealed that MFHF mainly acted on the response to xenobiotic stimulus, integrative component of the plasma membrane, RNA polymerase II transcription factor activity, ligand-activated sequence-specific DNA binding, pathways in cancer, lipid and atherosclerosis, human cytomegalovirus infection, and the PI3K-Akt signaling pathway, which are the main pathogenesis of MVA.

Traditional Chinese Exercise (TCE) has been shown to improve quality of life, and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a highly used method for investigating its mechanism. However, there is currently a lack of systematic reviews and meta-analyses focusing on TCE-related brain changes. This study aims to fill this gap by conducting a meta-analysis on brain changes of TCE with fMRI technology. We searched relevant studies published until February 2024. Independent researchers conducted literature screening, quality assessment, and clinical and neuroimaging data extraction. Focis were filtered from eligible studies, and meta-analysis was performed using seed-based d mapping. Twenty-three studies involving 1182 participants were included in this study. The result found that longitudinal TCE increased brain activity in the left anterior cingulate gyri, right fusiform gyrus, right middle temporal gyrus, left middle occipital gyrus and left frontal superior compared with other exercises or healthcare. Subgroup analysis showed that the brain activity in the right superior frontal gyrus dorsolateral; right cortico-spinal projections; corpus callosum; right inferior network; right gyrus rectus; left middle occipital gyrus were decreased after TCE compared to other exercise among healthy participants. The right median cingulate gyri was increased after Baduanjin (one of the TCE) compared to other exercise; the left precentral gyrus activity was increased after Tai chi chuan (TCC) practice compared to other exercise. The brain activity in the right insula, right supplementary motor area, and left anterior thalamic were significantly increased after long-time TCC exercise. TCE effectively improved the cognitive level of the subjects. Among them, the MoCA score increased, but Memory Quotient was not improved. Research results indicate that TCE have specific neuromodulatory effects, and different TCE have different neuromodulatory patterns.

Background: Antisynthetase syndrome (ASS) is a rare autoimmune disease characterized by the immune system attacking specific synthetase in the body. Due to the difficulty in clinical diagnosis, there is still a lack of effective treatment. Methods: We report a case of a 50-year-old man who presented with progressive, symmetric limb weakness, starting from the lower limbs and gradually affecting the upper limbs. He was admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) for treatment due to recurrent fever and coma. When he was admitted to the ICU, his limbs were almost unable to move, and the levels of creatine phosphokinase and muscle glycogen were significantly elevated (2449 u/l and 1857 ng/ml). The electromyogram showed myogenic injury, and the anti-PL7 antibody, anti-SSA antibody, and anti-Ro52 antibody were positive. Pathological biopsy of the left biceps brachii showed striated muscle necrosis and macrophage infiltration. He was finally diagnosed with ASS and received treatment with methylprednisolone (subsequently changed to prednisone) and traditional Chinese medicine (Buzhongyiqi Decoction and Shenlingbaizhu powder). Results: After receiving 2 weeks of glucocorticoid and traditional Chinese medicine treatment, his muscle strength had basically recovered, reaching grade 5 in his limb muscles strength. During the 3-month follow-up period, his activity tolerance continued to improve. Conclusion: We present a case of severe anti-PL7 positive ASS with positive anti-SSA/Ro52 antibody. The disease was relieved by glucocorticoid and traditional Chinese medicine treatment. This provides an effective approach for managing ASS.

Objective: Cangfu Daotan decoction is a classic traditional Chinese medicine formula that has been found to be beneficial for treating polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) in animal models. This systematic review aimed to assess the efficacy and safety of Cangfu Daotan decoction as an adjuvant treatment to Diane-35 for PCOS in humans. Methods: Seven electronic databases were searched up to June 22, 2024, to identify randomized controlled trials (RCTs) that evaluated Cangfu Daotan decoction combined with Diane-35 versus Diane-35 alone for the treatment of PCOS. The effects of individual RCTs were combined via meta-analysis and were measured as relative risks (RRs) or weighted mean differences (WMDs). Results: Twenty-five RCTs with a moderate to high risk of bias were included, involving 1845 patients with PCOS. Meta-analyses indicated that compared with Diane-35 alone, the combination of Diane-35 and Cangfu Daotan decoction significantly improved the response rate (RR 1.19, 95 % confidence interval [CI] 1.14 to 1.24), pregnancy rate (RR 1.57, 95 % CI 1.18 to 2.09), ovulation rate (RR 1.22, 95 % CI 1.11 to 1.35), and ovarian volume (WMD -1.43 cm3, 95 % CI -2.46 to -0.39). Cangfu Daotan decoction also significantly reduced the luteinizing hormone (LH) level, LH:FSH ratio, testosterone level, prolactin level, body mass index (BMI) and hirsutism and acne scores but had no significant effect on the follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) level. All adverse events were mild and not related to Cangfu Daotan decoction treatment. Conclusions: The findings suggest that Cangfu Daotan decoction, as an adjuvant therapy to Diane-35 for the treatment of PCOS, can reduce multiple sex hormone levels and BMI, relieve hyperandrogenism signs, and ultimately improve pregnancy outcomes, with good safety. The effect of Cangfu Daotan decoction on FSH remains uncertain. Due to limitations of risk of bias and heterogeneity, the quality of evidence was rated as moderate to very low.

Background: The resistance to endocrine therapy can lead to recurrence and metastasis of breast cancer (BC), affecting the survival period. Tiaogan Bushen Xiaoji (TGBSXJ) Formula, a traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) decoction, has been widely used in the treatment of estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) BC. However, the underlying mechanism of TGBSXJ Formula in ER+BC treatment has not been totally elucidated. Methods: Network pharmacology (NP) and RNA sequencing were used to predict the candidate ingredients and explore the potential targets of TGBSXJ Formula. Then, the results of NP and RNA sequencing were investigated by in vitro experiments. Results: Active ingredients of TGBSXJ Formula mainly included Mangiferin, Rutin, Anemarrhena asphodeloides saponin BII, Ganoderic acid A and Acacetin, etc. A protein-protein interaction (PPI) network was created based on the active ingredients of TGBSXJ Formula and target genes of ER+ BC, in which TGF-ß, MMP2 and SMAD3 were defined as the hub genes. In vitro experiments showed that TGBSXJ Formula significantly inhibited the viability, colony ability and migration of ER+ BC cells, and significantly increased the sensitivity to TAM. Western blot analysis showed that TGBSXJ Formula significantly downregulated TGF-ß, E-cadherin, MMP2, MMP9, N-cadherin, p-Smad2 and p-Smad3 in ER+ BC cells. Conclusion: TGBSXJ Formula increases the sensitivity of ER+ BC cells to TAM by inhibiting the TGF-ß/Smad signaling pathway.

Objective: Based on the visualization and analysis of the CiteSpace software, we aimed to explore the current research status and development trend of depression caused by external therapies in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) and to provide a reference for further research in this field. Methods: In the China National Knowledge Infrastructure, Wanfang, Web of Science, and PubMed databases, relevant articles on external therapies in TCM for depression were selected as the research objects, and CiteSpace performed the bibliometric analysis. Results: In total, 1672 Chinese and 441 English articles were included after CiteSpace was used to remove duplicate articles and perform manual screening. The Chinese articles were analyzed, and the overall issuance showed an upward trend; the core author was Tu Ya, and the institution with the highest article production was Heilongjiang University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. The English articles were analyzed, and the overall issuance showed an upward trend; the core author was Macpherson, Hugh, and the institution with the highest article production was Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. China ranked first in terms of number and centrality of publications, followed by the United States. The keywords of Chinese and English articles were analyzed to conclude that the research trends in this field were an exploration of therapeutic mechanisms, acupoint application therapy, and assessment of sleep quality, and the research hotspots were the clinical application of external therapies in TCM and the types of underlying diseases. Conclusion: This study comprehensively and objectively summarized the relevant literature on external therapies in TCM for depression. It highlights the direction for further exploration by revealing and analyzing the research hotspots and trends in this field.

Suicide is the leading cause of death worldwide, especially in South Korea. Individuals using Korean medicine (KM) clinics are common in this country, but KM doctor is not yet used in the country's suicide prevention policy. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and risk factors of passive suicidal ideation (SI) among outpatients at KM clinics, and attempted to develop a predictive model of SI through multivariate analysis. The Korea Health Panel Annual Data 2019, a nationally representative survey in South Korea, was analyzed. In this study, 1924 (weighted n:5,958,666) people aged 19 or older who used the KM outpatient service at least once in 2019 were set as study subjects. The authors calculated the weighted prevalence of passive SI and identified significant sociodemographic, physical, and mental factors using the Rao-Scott chi-square test and weighted logistic regression. A suicide risk scorecard was developed using the point to double the odds method to quantify individual risk, resulting in a score range of 0-100. We found high prevalence of passive SI among KM outpatients (7.5 %), and the annual prevalence of passive SI tended to be higher with increasing age (4.6 % in young adults, 6.7 % in middle-aged, and 12.4 % in old age). Also, the prevalence increased as stress worsened (2.0 % in hardly, 3.9 % in a little, 13.7 % in a lot, and 24.8 % in very much). By using multiple logistic regression analysis, SI risk prediction score model was developed, including basic livelihood security recipients, presence of chronic diseases, perceived stress, depression, and low quality of life. According to our findings, passive SI is not uncommon among KM outpatients. Based on current findings, the potential role of KMDs in the country's suicide prevention strategy can be discussed focusing on specific groups such as socioeconomically vulnerable groups, the elderly population, and those with physical illnesses.

Background: The identification of compound-protein interactions (CPIs) is crucial for drug discovery and understanding mechanisms of action. Accurate CPI prediction can elucidate drug-target-disease interactions, aiding in the discovery of candidate compounds and effective synergistic drugs, particularly from traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Existing in silico methods face challenges in prediction accuracy and generalization due to compound and target diversity and the lack of largescale interaction datasets and negative datasets for model learning. Methods: To address these issues, we developed a computational model for CPI prediction by integrating the constructed large-scale bioactivity benchmark dataset with a deep learning (DL) algorithm. To verify the accuracy of our CPI model, we applied it to predict the targets of compounds in TCM. An herb pair of Astragalus membranaceus and Hedyotis diffusaas was used as a model, and the active compounds in this herb pair were collected from various public databases and the literature. The complete targets of these active compounds were predicted by the CPI model, resulting in an expanded target dataset. This dataset was next used for the prediction of synergistic antitumor compound combinations. The predicted multi-compound combinations were subsequently examined through in vitro cellular experiments. Results: Our CPI model demonstrated superior performance over other machine learning models, achieving an area under the Receiver Operating Characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.98, an area under the precision-recall curve (AUPR) of 0.98, and an accuracy (ACC) of 93.31% on the test set. The model's generalization capability and applicability were further confirmed using external databases. Utilizing this model, we predicted the targets of compounds in the herb pair of Astragalus membranaceus and Hedyotis diffusaas, yielding an expanded target dataset. Then, we integrated this expanded target dataset to predict effective drug combinations using our drug synergy prediction model DeepMDS. Experimental assay on breast cancer cell line MDA-MB-231 proved the efficacy of the best predicted multi-compound combinations: Combination I (Epicatechin, Ursolic acid, Quercetin, Aesculetin and Astragaloside IV) exhibited a half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) value of 19.41 µM, and a combination index (CI) value of 0.682; and Combination II (Epicatechin, Ursolic acid, Quercetin, Vanillic acid and Astragaloside IV) displayed a IC50 value of 23.83 µM and a CI value of 0.805. These results validated the ability of our model to make accurate predictions for novel CPI data outside the training dataset and evaluated the reliability of the predictions, showing good applicability potential in drug discovery and in the elucidation of the bioactive compounds in TCM. Conclusion: Our CPI prediction model can serve as a useful tool for accurately identifying potential CPI for a wide range of proteins, and is expected to facilitate drug research, repurposing and support the understanding of TCM.

Hypertrophic scarring (HS) is a complication of wound healing that causes physiological and psychological distress in patients. However, the possible mechanism underlying HS is not fully understood, and there is no gold standard for its treatment. Natural products are more effective, economical, convenient, and safe than existing drugs, and they have a wide application prospect. However, there is a lack of literature on this topic, so we reviewed in vivo, in vitro, and clinical studies and screened natural products showing beneficial effects on HS that can become potential therapeutic agents for HS to fill in the gaps in the field. In addition, we discussed the drug delivery systems related to these natural products and their mechanisms in the treatment of HS. Generally speaking, natural products inhibit inflammation, myofibroblast activation, angiogenesis, and collagen accumulation by targeting interleukins, tumor necrosis factor-α, vascular endothelial growth factors, platelet-derived growth factors, and matrix metalloproteinases, so as to play an anti-HS effects of natural products are attributed to their anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative, anti-angiogenesis, and pro-apoptotic (enhancing apoptosis and autophagy) roles, thus treating HS. We also screened the potential therapeutic targets of these natural compounds for HS through network pharmacology and constructed a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network, which may provide clues for the pharmacological mechanism of natural products in treating this disease and the development and application of drugs.

Stroke represents a significant global health challenge, characterized by high incidence, mortality, disability, and recurrence rates, leading to substantial socioeconomic burdens. Despite advancements in acute management and prevention, effective post-stroke recovery strategies remain limited. Naotai Formula (NTF), a traditional Chinese medicine compound, has garnered attention for its potential in stroke treatment, encompassing both ischemic and hemorrhagic types. This review synthesizes recent advancements in basic and clinical research on NTF, focusing on its mechanisms of action in stroke therapy. The formula's multifaceted effects include promoting neuronal regeneration, combating oxidative stress, regulating lipid metabolism, and modulating iron homeostasis. Through a multi-target approach, NTF addresses the complex pathophysiology of stroke, suggesting a promising complementary strategy for stroke recovery. Despite promising findings, further research is required to elucidate its active components, potential side effects, and optimized therapeutic protocols. The integration of traditional Chinese medicine, like NTF, with conventional treatments may enhance stroke management strategies, urging the need for high-quality clinical trials and evidence-based guidelines.

The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) was the cause of the coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19), commonly known as the coronavirus pandemic. Since December 2020, COVID-19 vaccines have been extensively administered in numerous countries. In addition to new antiviral medications, the treatment regimen encompasses symptom management. Despite sustained research efforts, the outbreak remains uncontrolled, with affected patients still lacking proper treatment. This review is a valuable asset for researchers and practitioners aiming to delve into the yet unexplored potential of Anatolian flora in the fight against COVID-19 and other viral infections. Numerous medicinal plants in Anatolia, such as thyme, sage, cannabis, oregano, licorice root, and Origanum sp., contain bioactive compounds with proven antiviral properties that have been used in the region for centuries. The rich legacy of traditional Anatolian medicine (TAM), has significantly influenced modern medicine; thus, the profusion of medicinal plants native to Anatolia holds promise for antiviral drug development, making this review essential for researchers and practitioners.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the operational efficiency of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) hospitals in China. Methods: Pearson's analysis was used to test the correlation between the input and output variables. Data envelopment analysis (DEA) was utilized to analyze the input and output variables of 16 TCM hospitals, and each hospital efficiency score was computed by Deap 2.1, assuming variable return to scale (VRS), which is an input-oriented model. t tests were conducted to confirm the significant difference of efficiency scores at the hospital level and by hospital type, and ANOVA was used to test for significant differences in efficiency scores according to hospitals' size. Results: The correlation coefficient of the input and output indicators was between 0.613 and 0.956 (p < 0.05). The difference in number of doctors (ND) and numbers of pharmacists (NP) were statistically significant (p < 0.05) at the hospital level. The mean efficiency scores for technical efficiency (TE), pure technical efficiency (PTE), and scale efficiency (SE) in secondary TCM hospitals were 0.766, 0.919, and 0.838, respectively. Additionally, the lowest TE, PTE, and SE were 0.380, 0.426, and 0.380, respectively. Eight TCM hospitals in this study were DEA efficient, with an efficiency score of 1. There were no statistically significant differences in TE, PTE, and SE among hospital levels, hospital types or hospital sizes groups (p > 0.05). Conclusion: This study revealed that tertiary TCM hospitals had a greater level of efficiency than secondary TCM hospitals. In our study, 50% of TCM hospitals had inefficient management. Therefore, to activate the new development power of TCM hospitals, it is necessary to reform and improve the management system and mechanism of TCM hospitals, optimize the development environment of TCM hospitals and formulate development plans and measures based on local conditions.
