Resumen La variabilidad de la frecuencia cardiaca (VFC) se utiliza como una señal fisiológica para evaluar la reactividad psicofisiológica al estrés. El análisis en el dominio de la frecuencia de esta señal se ha usado para describir el papel del sistema nervioso autónomo en los procesos de adaptación al estrés. Sin embargo, el uso de medidas de tendencia central para reportar los resultados de distintas poblaciones desestima las diferencias individuales en la reacción frente al estrés. El objetivo de esta investigación fue caracterizar la reactividad cardiaca ante la evocación de eventos estresantes en población universitaria. Participaron 94 estudiantes de nuevo ingreso a la carrera de psicología, de dos universidades de México. Los resultados indican un decremento consistente en la banda de alta frecuencia ante la evocación de eventos estresantes, en comparación con la banda de baja frecuencia. La caracterización de la respuesta autonómica al estrés presenta dos subgrupos acoplados (co-activación y co-inhibición); y uno desacoplado. Nuestros hallazgos, ratifican la viabilidad de la banda de frecuencia alta de la VFC como un indicador estable de reactividad al estrés, y resaltan la importancia de las diferencias específicas de la actividad autonómica en la caracterización de la respuesta fisiológica al estrés.
Abstract Heart rate variability (HRV) is used as a reliable physiological signal to assess psychophysiological reactivity to stress. Frequency-domain mathematical analysis of the HRV signal provides metrics that are associated with the performance of the autonomic nervous system. However, the use of measures of central tendency to report global results in different populations underestimates individual differences in the way people react to stress and the clinical importance of this response. The objective of this research was to characterize cardiac reactivity to the evocation of stressful events in a university population. The participants were 94 new psychology students from two universities in Mexico. A psychophysiological stress assessment was performed to estimate cardiac reactivity; the evaluation consisted of the following conditions: 1) Baseline; 2) Evocation of stress; and 3) Recovery. The participants were sitting with their eyes closed and without moving during every single one of the conditions. Four subgroups were created depending on the type of cardiac reactivity to stress. The results indicate a significant consistent decrease in the high-frequency band when evoking stressful events, compared to the low-frequency band. Similar responses were observed between the low-frequency band and the high-frequency band in 60.6% of the cases, suggesting that the antagonistic autonomic balance between the two divisions of the ANS was scarce. According to the autonomic space model and the type of stress reactivity of each student, there were two subgroups characterized by co-activation and co-inhibition modes; and one subgroup characterized by uncoupled response mode. Our findings confirm the viability of the high-frequency band of HRV as a stable indicator of stress reactivity. Likewise, evidence is generated in favor of using evocative stress stimuli to assess physiological reactivity like more personal stressors. Lastly, the importance of specific differences in autonomic activity to characterize the physiological response to stress and its possible clinical utility to propose interventions and select techniques that most effectively benefit vulnerable populations are highlighted.

BACKGROUND: Cultural traditions attribute to pineal gland an important role for spiritual experiences. Mediumship and spirit possession are cultural phenomena found worldwide which have been described as having dissociative and psychotic-like characteristics, but with nonpathological aspects. A sympathetic activation pattern in response to spirit possession has been reported in some studies, but empirical data on pineal gland is scarce in this context. METHODS: We aimed to investigate pineal gland and pituitary volumes, as well as urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin levels in 16 alleged mediums (Medium Group-MG) compared with 16 healthy nonmedium controls (Control Group) (Experiment 1). Furthermore, we aimed to evaluate urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin and stress reactivity in GM (n = 10) under different physiological conditions (Experiment 2). RESULTS: In Experiment 1, MG presented higher scores of anomalous experiences, but there were no between-group differences regarding mental health or subjective sleep quality. Similar pineal gland and pituitary volumes were observed between groups. There were no between-group differences in urinary 6-sulfatoxymelatonin collected under equivalent baseline conditions. In Experiment 2, the rise of anxiety and heart rate in response to mediumistic experience was intermediate between a nonstressful control task (reading) and a stressful control task (Trier Social Stress Test-TSST). No significant differences were observed in 6-sulfatoxymelatonin urinary levels between the three conditions. The pattern of stress reactivity during the TSST was normal, but with an attenuated salivary cortisol response. CONCLUSION: The normal neuroimaging and stress reactivity findings in MG contrast with the abnormal results usually observed in subjects with psychotic and dissociative disorders.

Reaction to stressful events has an impact on several cognitive processes. High levels of stress can be detrimental to working memory, attention and decision-making. Here, we investigated whether individuals' reactivity to stress is related to their introspective sensitivity (i.e., how well individuals monitor their own cognitive processes). To this aim, 27 participants (16 women, mean 20 years old) were exposed to a psychosocial stress protocol (trier social stress test, TSST), where individuals were asked to simulate a job interview and perform arithmetic calculations in front of a panel of experts. The salivary cortisol concentration, which is considered a hormonal index of stress reactivity, was collected during the TSST through the enzyme immunoassay DRG cortisol ELISA kit. Based on literature recommendations, we classified participants as responders and non-responders to the TSST. In a second session, through a visual search paradigm, we evaluated the introspective sensitivity of the participants. We evaluated how these individuals (i) monitor their own performance (through a confidence estimation), (ii) monitor their own attentional shifts (through a subjective number of scanned items estimation, SNSI), and (iii) monitor their own response times (through an introspective response time estimation, iRT). We found that individuals with lower biological reactivity to stress are more accurate in estimating their SNSI (p = 0.033) and iRT (p = 0.002), and in evaluating their own performance (p = 0.038) through their confidence. We argue that the effect of stress on introspection is not limited to a particular type of introspective evaluation, but rather consists of a general alteration of the introspective mechanism.

Adaptive plasticity occurs intensely during the early postnatal period through processes like proliferation, migration, differentiation, synaptogenesis, myelination and apoptosis. Exposure to particular stimuli during this critical period has long-lasting effects on cognition, stress reactivity and behavior. Maternal care is the main source of social, sensory and chemical stimulation to the young and is, therefore, critical to "fine-tune" the offspring's neural development. Mothers providing a low quantity or quality of stimulation produce offspring that will exhibit reduced cognitive performance, impaired social affiliation and increased agonistic behaviors. Transgenerational transmission of such traits occurs epigenetically, i.e., through mechanisms like DNA methylation and post-translational modification of nucleosomal histones, processes that silence or increase gene expression without affecting the DNA sequence. Reciprocally, providing maternal care profoundly affects the behavior, learning, memory and fine neuroanatomy of the adult female. Such effects are in many cases permanent and sometimes they involve the hormones of pregnancy and lactation. The above evidence supports the idea that the mother-young dyad exerts profound and permanent effects on the brains of both adult and developing organisms, respectively. Effects on the latter can be explained by the neural developmental processes taking place during the early postnatal period. In contrast, little is known about the mechanisms mediating the plasticity of the adult maternal brain. The bidirectional effects that mother and young exert on each other's brains exemplify a remarkable plasticity of this organ for organizing itself and provide an immense source of variability for adaptation and evolution in mammals.
