OBJECTIVES: We aimed to investigate the effects of ankle taping on lower extremity biomechanics related to injury development and how these effects change after sports-specific use. DESIGN: Randomized, repeated measures design with three conditions: Barefoot, tape applied fresh, and tape after sports-specific use (between-subject factor: sex). METHODS: Twenty-five healthy participants (ten female) performed sports-specific movements, including running, drop jumping, and 180° change of direction, under the three conditions. Kinetic and kinematic data were collected using 3D motion capturing and force platforms. RESULTS: Tape applied fresh and tape after sports-specific use significantly reduced peak ankle inversion. Biomechanical risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament or running overuse injuries were either unchanged or decreased with tape applied fresh, except for the peak loading rate of the resultant ground reaction force, which increased between 4% and 18% between movement types. After 15 minutes of sports-specific use of the tape, the alterations induced by tape applied fresh remained for some biomechanical risk factors while they became closer to barefoot again for others, indicating a differential response to prolonged use of taping for different biomechanical variables. CONCLUSIONS: Ankle taping protects the ankle joint by reducing biomechanical risk factors associated with ankle sprains, and most biomechanical risk factors for anterior cruciate ligament or running overuse injuries are not increased. Further research is needed to explore the duration of protective effects, variations across sports, and its impact on patients with chronic ankle instability, contributing to a more comprehensive understanding of ankle taping's influence on lower extremity biomechanics.

Introduction: Neuromuscular fatigue causes a transient reduction of muscle force, and alters the mechanisms of motor control. Whether these alterations increase the risk of anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury is still debated. Here we compare the biomechanics of single-leg drop jumps before and after the execution of a fatiguing exercise, evaluating whether this exercise causes biomechanical alterations typically associated with an increased risk of ACL lesion. The intensity of the fatiguing protocol was tailored to the aerobic capacity of each participant, minimizing potential differential effects due to inter-individual variability in fitness. Methods: Twenty-four healthy male volunteers performed single leg drop jumps, before and after a single-set fatiguing session on a cycle ergometer until exhaustion (cadence: 65-70 revolutions per minute). For each participant, the intensity of the fatiguing exercise was set to 110% of the power achieved at their anaerobic threshold, previously identified by means of a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Joint angles and moments, as well as ground reaction forces (GRF) before and after the fatiguing exercise were compared for both the dominant and the non-dominant leg. Results: Following the fatiguing exercise, the hip joint was more extended (landing: Δ=-2.17°, p = 0.005; propulsion: Δ=-1.83°, p = 0.032) and more abducted (landing: Δ=-0.72°, p = 0.01; propulsion: Δ=-1.12°, p = 0.009). Similarly, the knee joint was more extended at landing (non-dominant leg: Δ=-2.67°, p < 0.001; dominant: Δ=-1.4°, p = 0.023), and more abducted at propulsion (both legs: Δ=-0.99°, p < 0.001) and stabilization (both legs: Δ=-1.71°, p < 0.001) hence increasing knee valgus. Fatigue also caused a significant reduction of vertical GRF upon landing (Δ=-0.21 N/kg, p = 0.003), but not during propulsion. Fatigue did not affect joint moments significantly. Conclusion: The increased hip and knee extension, as well as the increased knee abduction we observed after the execution of the fatiguing exercise have been previously identified as risk factors for ACL injury. These results therefore suggest an increased risk of ACL injury after the execution of the participant-tailored fatiguing protocol proposed here. However, the reduced vertical GRF upon landing and the preservation of joint moments are intriguing, as they may suggest the adoption of protective strategies in the fatigued condition to be evaluated in future studied.

Sports physiotherapists and coaches are tasked with evaluating the movement quality of athletes across the spectrum of ability and experience. However, the accuracy of visual observation is low and existing technology outside of expensive lab-based solutions has limited adoption, leading to an unmet need for an efficient and accurate means to measure static and dynamic joint angles during movement, converted to movement metrics useable by practitioners. This paper proposes a set of pose landmarks for computing frequently used joint angles as metrics of interest to sports physiotherapists and coaches in assessing common strength-building human exercise movements. It then proposes a set of rules for computing these metrics for a range of common exercises (single and double drop jumps and counter-movement jumps, deadlifts and various squats) from anatomical key-points detected using video, and evaluates the accuracy of these using a published 3D human pose model trained with ground truth data derived from VICON motion capture of common rehabilitation exercises. Results show a set of mathematically defined metrics which are derived from the chosen pose landmarks, and which are sufficient to compute the metrics for each of the exercises under consideration. Comparison to ground truth data showed that root mean square angle errors were within 10° for all exercises for the following metrics: shin angle, knee varus/valgus and left/right flexion, hip flexion and pelvic tilt, trunk angle, spinal flexion lower/upper/mid and rib flare. Larger errors (though still all within 15°) were observed for shoulder flexion and ASIS asymmetry in some exercises, notably front squats and drop-jumps. In conclusion, the contribution of this paper is that a set of sufficient key-points and associated metrics for exercise assessment from 3D human pose have been uniquely defined. Further, we found generally very good accuracy of the Strided Transformer 3D pose model in predicting these metrics for the chosen set of exercises from a single mobile device camera, when trained on a suitable set of functional exercises recorded using a VICON motion capture system. Future assessment of generalization is needed.

Introduction: Running is one of the most popular sports in the world, but it also increases the risk of injury. The purpose of this study was to establish a modeling approach for IMU-based subdivided action pattern evaluation and to investigate the classification performance of different deep models for predicting running fatigue. Methods: Nineteen healthy male runners were recruited for this study, and the raw time series data were recorded during the pre-fatigue, mid-fatigue, and post-fatigue states during running to construct a running fatigue dataset based on multiple IMUs. In addition to the IMU time series data, each participant's training level was monitored as an indicator of their level of physical fatigue. Results: The dataset was examined using single-layer LSTM (S_LSTM), CNN, dual-layer LSTM (D_LSTM), single-layer LSTM plus attention model (LSTM + Attention), CNN, and LSTM hybrid model (LSTM + CNN) to classify running fatigue and fatigue levels. Discussion: Based on this dataset, this study proposes a deep learning model with constant length interception of the raw IMU data as input. The use of deep learning models can achieve good classification results for runner fatigue recognition. Both CNN and LSTM can effectively complete the classification of fatigue IMU data, the attention mechanism can effectively improve the processing efficiency of LSTM on the raw IMU data, and the hybrid model of CNN and LSTM is superior to the independent model, which can better extract the features of raw IMU data for fatigue classification. This study will provide some reference for many future action pattern studies based on deep learning.

Wearable inertial measurement units (IMUs) can be utilized as an alternative to optical motion capture as a method of measuring joint angles. These sensors require functional calibration prior to data collection, known as sensor-to-segment calibration. This study aims to evaluate previously described sensor-to-segment calibration methods to measure joint angle range of motion (ROM) during highly dynamic sports-related movements. Seven calibration methods were selected to compare lower extremity ROM measured using IMUs to an optical motion capture system. The accuracy of ROM measurements for each calibration method varied across joints and sport-specific tasks, with absolute mean differences between IMU measurement and motion capture measurement ranging from <0.1° to 24.1°. Fewer significant differences were observed at the pelvis than at the hip, knee, or ankle across all tasks. For each task, one or more calibration movements demonstrated non-significant differences in ROM for at least nine out of the twelve ROM variables. These results suggest that IMUs may be a viable alternative to optical motion capture for sport-specific lower-extremity ROM measurement, although the sensor-to-segment calibration methods used should be selected based on the specific tasks and variables of interest for a given application.

To compare the efficacy of different recovery strategies (sitting; cold water immersion, CWI; vibration foam rolling, VFR) on the lower extremities of amateur basketball players after the simulated load of a basketball game, we assessed the power, agility, and dynamic balance before and after interventions. Ten amateur basketball players alternately underwent 12 min of sitting, 12 min of CWI at 5 °C, and 12 min of VFR. The power, agility, and dynamic balance were measured immediately post-warm-up, immediately post-game, immediately post-intervention, 1 h after interventions, and 24 h after interventions. To simulate the load of a basketball game, specific movements were designed and implemented. Jump height was measured using a Kistler force plate. Reaction time and dynamic balance score were assessed using the Pavigym agility response system and the Y balance test, respectively. The data were analyzed with a two-way repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA). The results showed that the vertical jump height significantly decreased after the CWI intervention compared to the CON and VFR groups (p < 0.001). At 1 h after the intervention, the vertical jump height in the CON group showed delayed recovery compared to the CWI and VFR groups (p = 0.007; p < 0.001). At 24 h after the intervention, the vertical jump height in the CWI group further increased and was significantly different from the CON and VFR groups (p < 0.001; p = 0.005). Additionally, reaction times significantly increased immediately after the CWI intervention (p = 0.004) but showed further recovery at 24 h compared to the CON group (p < 0.001). The dynamic balance score significantly rebounded after the CWI intervention compared to the CON group (p = 0.021), with further improvement at 24 h (p < 0.001). CWI initially showed negative effects, but over time, its recovery effect was superior and more long-lasting. VFR had the best immediate effect on lower limb recovery after the game.

Over the past fifty years there has been considerable development in motion analysis systems and in computer simulation modelling of sports movements while the relevance and importance of functional variability of sports technique has become increasingly recognised. Technical developments for experimental work have led to increased, and still increasing, subject numbers. Increased subjects per study give better statistical power, the ability to utilise different data analyses, and thus the determination of more subtle and nuanced factors. The overall number of studies has also increased massively. Most actions in sport can, and have, been studied at some level with even the more challenging ones, such as player on player impacts, having some developing research. Computer simulation models of sports movements have ranged from simple (one or two segment) models to very complex musculoskeletal models and have used parameters ranging from the generic to individual-specific. Simple models have given insights into the key mechanics of movement while individual-specific model optimisations have been used to improve athlete performance. Our depth of understanding of the mechanics of sports techniques has increased across a wide range of sports. In the future there is likely to be more development and use of markerless motion capture, individual-specific model parameters, and more consideration of motor control aspects in the analysis of sports technique.

BACKGROUND: High impact sports are associated with an increased incidence rate for knee ligament injuries, specifically pertaining to the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. What is less clear is (i) the extent to which high impact activities preferentially load the anterior cruciate ligament versus the medial collateral ligament, and (ii) whether both ligaments experience similar stretch ratios during high loading scenarios. Therefore, the goal of this project was to assess how different loading conditions experienced through more at-risk sporting maneuvers influence the relative displacements of the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. The focus of the study was on adolescent patients - a group that has largely been overlooked when studying knee ligament biomechanics. METHODS: Through kinetic knee data obtained through motion capture experimentation, two different loading conditions (high vs low impact) were applied to 22 specimen-specific adolescent finite element knee models to investigate the biomechanical impact various sporting maneuvers place on the knee ligaments. FINDINGS: The high impact side cutting maneuver resulted in 102% and 47% increases in ligament displacement compared to the low impact baseball swing (p < 0.05) for both the anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament. INTERPRETATION: Quantifying biomechanical risks that sporting activities place on adolescent subjects provides physicians with insight into knee ligament vulnerability. More specifically, knowing the risks that various sports place on ligaments helps guide the selection of sports for at-risk patients (especially those who have undergone knee ligament surgery).

We compared the effects of two 8-week concurrent strength and endurance trainings (CSETs) on running economy (RE) and running biomechanics, and we explored whether the effects on running biomechanics were mediated by responder status [high vs low responder based on -2.6% change in RE]. Thirty-one male recreational runners were randomly assigned to a standard endurance running training combined with either plyometric (CSET-PLY) or dynamic body-weight (CSET-DYN) training. RE and running biomechanics [contact (tc) and flight (tf) time, step frequency (SF), duty factor (DF), and leg stiffness (kleg)] were measured pre- and post-intervention. RE significantly improved following CSET (RE = -2.1 ± 3.9%; p = 0.005) and no changes in tc, DF, SF, and kleg (p ≥ 0.10) but a shorter tf (p ≥ 0.03) from pre- to post-intervention were seen. The prevalence of high responders was 42% (RE = -5.7 ± 2.4%). Among high responders, there were no changes in running biomechanics except participants following CSET-DYN who increased their SF (+3%). These results indicate that improvements in RE obtained through CSET-PLY and CSET-DYN involve minimal to no changes in running biomechanics and that there was not a training modality, which was better than the other. More detailed biomechanical assessments involving kinematics, kinetics, and electromyography could shed light on the underlying mechanisms of RE improvement.

This work presents a qualitative and quantitative pilot study which explores the kinematics of Venetian style forward-facing standing rowing as practised by able-bodied competitive athletes. The technique, made famous by the gondoliers, was replicated in a biomechanics laboratory by a cohort of four experienced rowers who compete in this style at National Level events in Malta. Athletes were marked with reflective markers following the modified Helen Hayes model and asked to row in a manner which mimics their on-water practise and recorded using a Vicon optoelectronic motion capture system. Data collected were compared to its equivalent using a standard sliding-seat ergometer as well as data collated from observations of athletes rowing on water, thus permitting the documentation of the manner of how this technique is performed. It was shown that this rowing style is characterised by rather asymmetric and complex kinematics, particularly upper-body movements which provides the athlete with a total-body workout involving all major muscle groups working either isometrically, to provide stability, or actively.

A systematic search was performed of online databases for any anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries within the NBA. Video was obtained of injuries occurring during competition and downloaded for 2-dimensional video analysis. Thirty-five in-game videos were obtained for analysis. Of the reviewed cases, 19% were noncontact ACL injuries where there was no player-to-player contact from an opposing player. Three injury mechanism categories were found based on the events at the point of initial ground contact of the foot of the injured limb: single-leg casting (mean dorsiflexion angle 18.9° (14.4°); mean knee flexion angle 15.6° (7.8°); and mean trunk lateral flexion 18.2° (8.4°)); bilateral hop (mean dorsiflexion angle 18.2° (15.2°), mean knee flexion angle 21° (14.5°), mean trunk extension angle 6.9° (11.4°), and landing angle from the athlete's center of mass 47.9° (10.1°)); and single-leg landing after contact (mean abduction angle of the swing leg 105.4° (18.1°), mean knee flexion angle of the injured limb 34.2° (8.0°), and mean trunk ipsilateral flexion angle 22.2° (7.0°)).

Purpose: This study aimed to explore the impact of different landing methods on leg movement ability and the relationship between various parameters of leg movement. Methods: This work parameters including stride, contact time, flight time, duty factor, stride angle, vertical stiffness, leg stiffness and peak vertical ground reaction force. Thirty healthy subjects voluntarily participated in this study. In this experiment, each subject was required to perform two tests on a treadmill (using a speed of 10 km/h and 160 spm) (The interval between two experiments is 7 days). In the first test, subjects used RFS. In the second test, FFS was used. A high-speed video camera was used to collect the images and the Kwon3D motion analysis suite was used to process the images in this experiment. Results: The findings of this study revealed that runners employing the forefoot strike FFS method exhibited several favorable characteristics in contrast to those using the rearfoot strike RFS method. These included shorter contact time, longer flight time, reduced duty cycle, increased stride angle and heightened leg stiffness. Additionally, peak vertical ground reaction forces were significantly elevated in females. Conclusions: While rear foot strike RFS demonstrates a notable enhancement in leg stiffness among female runners with low leg stiffness, it concurrently leads to a significant increase in peak vertical ground reaction force and imposes a greater load on the legs. However, this phenomenon is not observed among male participants.

Technical evaluation of swimming performance is an essential factor in preparing elite swimmers for their competitions. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) have attracted much attention recently because they can provide coaches with a detailed analysis of swimmers' performance during training. A coach can obtain a quantitative and objective evaluation from IMU. The purpose of this study was to validate the use of a new phase-based performance assessment with a single IMU worn on the sacrum during training sessions. Sixteen competitive swimmers performed five one-way front crawl trials at their maximum speed wearing an IMU on the sacrum. The coach recorded the lap time for each trial, as it remains the gold standard for swimmer's performance in competition. The measurement was carried out once a week for 10 consecutive weeks to monitor the improvement in the swimmers' performance. Meaningful progress was defined as a time decrease of at least 0.5 s over a 25 m lap. Using validated algorithms, we estimated five goal metrics from the IMU signals representing the swimmer's performance in the swimming phases (wall push-off, glide, stroke preparation, free-swimming) and in the entire lap. The results showed that the goal metrics for free-swimming phase and the entire lap predicted the swimmer's progress well (e.g., accuracy, precision, sensitivity, and specificity of 0.91, 0.89, 0.94, and 0.95 for the lap goal metric, respectively). As the goal metrics for initial phases (wall push-off, glide, stroke preparation) achieved high precision and specificity (≥0.79) in progress detection, the coach can use them for swimmers with satisfactory free-swimming phase performance and make further improvements in initial phases. Changes in the values of the goal metrics have been shown to be correlated with changes in lap time when there is meaningful progress. The results of this study show that goal metrics provided by the phase-based performance evaluation with a single IMU can help monitoring swimming progress. Average velocity of the lap can replace traditional lap time measurement, while phase-based goal metrics provide more information about the swimmer's performance in each phase. This evaluation can help the coach quantitatively monitor the swimmer's performance and train them more efficiently.

Past investigations provided limited information regarding instep kicking kinematics in soccer. It is unclear how foot dominance and ball approach angle impact whole-body kinematics and consequently the ball velocity. We aimed to analyse the effects of the ball approach angle and the foot used on the whole-body kinematics of soccer players performing an instep kick. Twenty-four soccer players performed maximal instep kicks, using the dominant and non-dominant feet, with the ball stationary or rolling from four different directions. Whole-body motion was recorded during the kicking action and kinematic time-series were extracted and resampled to 200 points equally divided into kicking and follow-through phases. 1-D statistical parametric mapping two-way ANOVA tested for the effect of ball condition and foot dominance. Ball approach angle affected most of the swinging and support limb variables and some upper body variables. Performance-related variables such as CoM, foot, and shank velocities were reduced when the ball approached posteriorly. The linear and angular velocities of the swinging limb, and CoM vertical position, were higher when kicking with dominant foot. Based on these findings, as a practical implication, coaches should vary ball approach angles and the foot used during kicking drills to improve technical effectiveness in various situations.

Swimming coaches provide regular timed and technical feedback to swimmers and guide them efficiently in training sessions. Due to the complexity of swimmers' performance, which is not visible in qualitative observation, quantitative and objective performance evaluation can better assist the coach in this regard. Inertial measurement units (IMUs) are used in swimming for objective performance evaluation. In this study, we propose a new performance evaluation feedback (SmartSwim) using IMU and investigate its effects on the swimmer's weekly progress. Measurements were conducted each week with 15 competitive swimmers for 10 weeks using a Sacrum IMU. The SmartSwim report included a comprehensive representation of performance based on goal metrics of each phase extracted from the IMU signals. The swimmers were divided into two groups: the experimental and control groups. The SmartSwim report for each swimmer in the experimental group was given to the coach, who used it to adjust the training accordingly. The results showed that the experimental group outperformed the control group when comparing each swimmer, each session and the whole sessions. At the level of each individual, more members of the experimental group showed significant downward trend of average lap time (Mann-Kendall trend test, 95% confidence level). While comparing the sessions, the experimental group showed significantly lower lap time than the control group from the sixth session onwards (p-value < 0.05 from t-test). Considering all sessions, the experimental group showed significantly higher progress, lower average lap time, and more consistent records (Mann-Whitney U test at 95% confidence level) than the control group. This study demonstrated that SmartSwim can assist coaching by quantitatively assessing swimmers' performance, leading to more efficient training.

Small differences in turn cycle structure, invisible to the naked eye, could be decisive in improving descent performance. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of turn cycle structure on the performance of elite alpine skiers using an inertial measurement unit (IMU) in different slalom (SL) course settings. Four SL courses were set: a flat-turned (FT), a steep-turned (ST), a flat-straighter (FS) and a steep-straighter (SS). Five elite alpine skiers (21.2 ± 3.3 years, 180.2 ± 5.6 cm, 72.8 ± 6.6 kg) completed several runs at maximum speed for each SL course. A total of 77 runs were obtained. Fast total times correlate with a longer initiation (INI) time in FT, a shorter steering time out of the turn (STEOUT) in the FT and FS and a shorter total steering time (STEIN+OUT) in the FT and SS courses. The linear mixed model used for the analysis revealed that in the FT-course for each second increase in the INI time, the total time is reduced by 0.45 s, and for every one-second increase in the STEOUT and STEIN+OUT times, the total time increases by 0.48 s and 0.31 s, respectively. Thus, to enhance descent performance, the skier should lengthen the INI time and shorten the STEOUT and STEIN+OUT time. Future studies could use an IMU to detect turn phases and analyze them using the other built-in sensors.

RESUMEN

This article presents the design and experimental evaluation of a non-invasive wearable sensor system that can be used to acquire crucial information about athletes' performance during inline figure skating training. By combining distance and time-of-flight sensors and gyroscopes, the system is able to detect when jumps are performed and provides a live view of the data (e.g., the number and height of jumps) through a graphical user interface. The main novelty of our approach lies in the way in which the optical sensors are orientated. Typically, the sensors are orientated horizontally and positioned in pairs on the ground, where they measure the time interval between the moment the athlete leaves the ground and the moment they land. In our system, an optical sensor is placed under each foot and is vertically orientated so as to constantly measure the distance from the ground. In addition, a gyroscope sensor is placed on the athlete's back, which provides information on the direction and angular momentum of the movement. By combining this data, the system provides the accurate detection of various jumps and technical elements without any constraints on the training ground. In this paper, the system is also compared to similar platforms in the literature, although there are no other specific systems that are available for inline figure skating. The results of the experimental evaluation, which was performed by high profile athletes, confirm its effectiveness in correctly detecting jumps, especially considering its compromise between precision and the overall cost of the equipment.

This descriptive laboratory crossover trial study examined the intervention of high friction synthetic vs lower friction natural sport surfaces on the ankle joint biomechanics in a sidestep cutting task. Twenty-nine male futsal players performed 5 trials of sidestep cutting task in a laboratory, recorded by an 18-camera motion capture system to obtain the ankle joint orientation, velocity and moment. Utilised friction was obtained by the peak ratio of the horizontal to vertical ground reaction force during the stance. Repeated measures (MANOVA) suggested a significant effect of the playing surface and post hoc paired t-tests revealed significantly higher utilised coefficient of friction, higher peak plantarflexion angle, lower peak eversion angle, higher peak inversion velocity, lower peak inversion moment and higher peak internal rotation moment. In performing a sidestep cutting task, futsal players demonstrated higher utilised ground friction when available friction from the playing surface was higher, resulting in higher peak inversion velocity and higher peak internal rotation moment, which may make the ankle joint more prone to sprain injury. Floorings for futsal should have an adequate coefficient of friction for agility and avoidance of the risk of slipping. Increasing the coefficient of friction may not only enhance performance but also endanger the ankle joint.

Joint contact force is the actual force applied on the articular surface that could predict performance and injuries, but rarely reported for badminton sport. The study sought to calculate lower limb joint contact force and decelerative kinematics for badminton forward lunges. Fifteen badminton players performed backhand and forehand forward lunges in random order. The kinematic and kinetic data were input to scale a musculoskeletal model and solve inverse dynamics in the simulations. Outcome variables were compared between lunge conditions using repeated measures MANOVA. Forehand lunge produced higher compressional ankle contact force (p = 0.040, partial η2 = 0.14), faster touchdown hip abduction (p = 0.031, partial η2 = 0.16), and larger horizontal deceleration of the mass centre (p = 0.016, partial η2 = 0.19) and torso (p = 0.031, partial η2 = 0.16) compared to backhand lunge. Despite the statistical significance, we found that the increments of joint loading in forehand lunge were small (<5%) with limited effect size and could be attributed to the larger movement deceleration during braking. These force changes could possess performance merits. However, its linkage to injury risk is unclear and warrants further investigation.

This study aimed to investigate the effects of the external load of elastic bands attached to the waist and heels to enhance the pre-activation of leg extensor muscles on drop jumps (DJs). Twelve male college athletes volunteered for this study. Eight cameras and two force platforms were used to collect data. Each subject performed DJs with elastic band loads of 0% and 20% body weight (BW) attached to the waist and heels during the airborne and landing phases from 40- and 50-cm drop heights. Repeated measures of two-way analysis of variance were performed with two loads of the elastic bands and two heights of the platform for each dependent biomechanical variable. Jump height, reactive strength index, leg stiffness, hip, knee flexion, and ankle plantarflexion angles at the initial foot contact and ankle dorsiflexion range of motion (ROM) significantly increased with 20% BW loads. The peak ground reaction force of impact, eccentric work, and hip flexion range of motion significantly decreased with 20% BW loads. The use of the elastic bands as accentuated loading during the airborne and landing phases of DJs can induce pre-activation of the joint extensors of the lower extremity to achieve stretch-shortening cycle benefits and performance and reduce the ground impact for the lower extremity. HighlightsAttaching elastic bands to the waist and heels enables the following during drop jumps.The joint extensors of the lower extremities act as a counterbalance to the pull from the elastic bands.The performance of the drop jump was improved.The ground impact was reduced.
