Introduction: Adolescent mental health has been an issue of global concern, and the mental health of adolescents in economically disadvantaged areas may require additional research. The research delves into factors associated with economically disadvantaged areas' adolescent mental health, employing family systems theory, self-determination theory, and psychological reactance theory. Specifically, the present study which was done in Jingzhou country, an economically disadvantaged area of Hunan Province, China, aimed to examine the link between parental psychological control and adolescent mental health, as well as the mediating roles of psychological reactance and problematic smartphone use in this relationship. Methods: A sample of 1300 Chinese middle school students (620 girls, mean age = 14.22 ± 1.29) completed self-reported measures of parental psychological control, psychological reactance, problematic smartphone use, and adolescent mental health. Results: Results showed that parental psychological control was negatively associated with adolescent mental health. Psychological reactance and problematic smartphone use mediated the association between parental psychological control and adolescent mental health, separately and serially. Discussion: The findings of the present study enrich the literature on parenting styles and adolescent mental health in economically disadvantaged areas, and this provides an intervention perspective to reduce the negative impact of poor parenting on adolescent mental health in economically disadvantaged areas.

Introduction: To improve the physical fitness of college students, numerous Chinese universities have mandated students to use sports apps for running on campus. However, this has led to widespread resistance among students. Methods: To gain a deep understanding of the potential reasons for student resistance, we have developed a conceptual model based on psychological reactance theory. Specifically, we conducted a questionnaire survey involving 449 Chinese college students, using partial least squares structural equation modeling to test and analyze the research model and its related hypotheses. Results: Our results reveal that: (1) Psychological reactance poses a potential reason for students' resistance to mandatory use of sports apps, and it has a significant negative impact on students' attitudes and behavioral intentions. (2) Students' perceived threat to freedom and reactance proneness are two important antecedents of psychological reactance, which can account for 51% (R 2 = 0.51) of the variance in psychological reactance. Furthermore, the results indicate that students' reactance proneness has a positive impact on perceived threats to freedom. (3) The mandatory use of sports apps leads students to have two different conditions: mandated-acceptance and mandated-rejection, both of which have a positive impact on the antecedents of psychological reactance. Discussion: These findings provide insights into the psychological processes underlying students' resistance to mandatory use of sports apps, facilitating the application of sports apps in intervention measures that improve health and fitness. Furthermore, this study is the first to apply psychological reactance theory to mandatory exercise behavior, contributing to the reactance literature.

Background: The prevalence of vaping among young people is a public health crisis. Social norms can contribute to the problem, but also to the solution. Objective: The current study examined young adults' responses to anti-vaping messages that varied on two features: social norms and behavioral framing. Methods: College students (N = 270) were randomly assigned to one of five conditions in a 2 (social norm: dynamic norm, static norm) X 2 (behavioral framing: vaping, not vaping) between-subjects factorial design with a no message control condition (n range = 49-58 in each condition). Results: Independent samples t-test, univariate analysis of variance, and structural equation modeling were used to test hypotheses and answer research questions. Results showed main effects of social norm, such that the dynamic (vs. static) norm message led to higher preconformity (p <.001) and self-efficacy (p = .012), and lower freedom threat (p = .040) and reactance (p < .001). There was also an indirect effect of dynamic norm on attitude as mediated by self-efficacy (p = .040). No main effect of behavioral framing was observed. Few interactions between social norm and behavioral framing were observed on preconformity (p < .001), anger (p < .001), and negative cognitions (p = .003). Conclusion: Overall, findings suggest a persuasive advantage for a dynamic norm relative to a static norm. Theoretically, these findings add to the literature suggesting the persuasiveness of dynamic norms. Practically, these results imply anti-vaping campaigns targeting young populations should communicate the changing (dynamic) norms in regard to (not) vaping.

BACKGROUND: Health warnings about alcohol consumption could inform consumers and discourage alcohol consumption, but little is known about what topics these warnings should address. We sought to identify promising topics for alcohol warnings. METHODS: In January 2024, we recruited a convenience sample of 2,522 US adults ages ≥ 21 years. In an online within-subjects experiment, participants viewed messages about 6 topics (5 warning topics selected from a pool of 16 topics [e.g., liver disease, liver cancer] and 1 control topic [i.e., recycling or reselling products]) shown in random order. For each topic, participants viewed and rated 2 statements about that topic on perceived message effectiveness (primary outcome) and reactance (secondary outcome). RESULTS: The 16 warning topics elicited higher perceived message effectiveness than the control topic (ps < 0.001). Among the warning topics, liver disease, most cancer types, dementia or mental decline, and hypertension elicited the highest perceived message effectiveness, while breast cancer, sleep, and drinking guidelines elicited the lowest. Fourteen of the 16 warning topics (all except for fetal harms and impaired driving) elicited more reactance than the control topic (ps < 0.001). Warning topics that elicited high perceived message effectiveness generally elicited high reactance, except for messages about liver disease and liver cancer, which elicited high perceived message effectiveness but only moderate reactance. DISCUSSION: Warning messages about a variety of topics hold promise for discouraging alcohol consumption. Messages about liver disease, most cancer types, dementia or mental decline, and hypertension are perceived as especially effective; however, none of these topics are included in the current US alcohol warning.

A noninvasive, immediate, and convenient method for assessing muscle tissue status during exercise-induced muscle damage (EIMD) has not been established. This study was designed to assess and determine parameters suitable for measuring EIMD after eccentric exercise, using multi-frequency bioimpedance analysis (BIA). Thirty-five young male participants performed dumbbell exercises with their left arm, and their BIA parameters were measured at various time points up to 168 h post exercise using a multi-frequency BIA device. At all-time points, intra and extracellular water content was greater in the left arm than in the right arm, whereas the impedance, reactance, resistance, and phase angle were lower in the left arm than in the right arm. Established EIMD indices, such as maximal isometric voluntary contraction, were measured and used in correlational analyses. Only reactance was correlated with biomarkers, indicating muscle damage (r = - 0.56 to - 0.49). Furthermore, reactance was found to correlate well with indirect indicators of EIMD, suggesting that it may be a suitable marker for evaluating EIMD. However, the relationship with the limited evaluation indices employed in this study is constrained. Future studies should investigate the correlation between reactance and direct damage indicators, such as structural damage, observed in biopsies.

This study experimentally investigated the effect of dogmatic and suggestive language in Christian-sourced excessive alcohol consumption messages among college-aged participants who identify as Christians or non-Christians, as well as the role of perceived similarity with the message source, on their self-reported freedom-threat, psychological reactance, and behavioral intentions to consume alcohol. The results from this study support psychological reactance theory and demonstrate the various message strategies to effectively communicate the negative health effects of excessive alcohol consumption to individuals who identify either as Christians or non-Christians.

Vaccine hesitancy is widespread, and developing effective communication strategies that encourage hesitant individuals to choose vaccination is essential. This pre-registered research aimed to examine associations among moral obligation, autonomous motivation, vaccination intentions and reactance, and to test messages highlighting moral obligation and autonomy support. In Study 1, participants who had not received a Covid-19 vaccine (N = 1036) completed measures of autonomous motivation, moral obligation, reactance, intentions to vaccinate and vaccine hesitancy. Autonomous motivation and moral obligation emerged as strong independent predictors of lower reactance, lower hesitancy and greater vaccination intentions. In Study 2 (N = 429), the participants received a vaccination-promoting message that highlighted moral obligation versus personal protection and used autonomy supportive versus controlling language. Messages with autonomy-supportive language and highlighting personal protection elicited lower reactance and greater perceived legitimacy compared to messages with controlling language and highlighting moral obligation. All messages elicited greater reactance and lower perceived legitimacy compared to an information-only message, and there were no effects of message type on vaccination intentions or vaccine hesitancy. The research has implications for the design of communications encouraging vaccination in hesitant individuals and suggests caution should be taken when developing messages to encourage vaccination in hesitant individuals.

Phase Angle (PhA), derived from bioelectrical impedance analysis, is a measurement of cellular resistance to electrical current and a non-invasive tool to monitor neuromuscular performance. The relationship between PhA and components of athletic performance is not fully understood. The purpose of this study was to determine if maximal running speed, critical speed (CS), and/or D prime (D') derived from a 3-minute all-out-test (3MAOT) correlates to PhA, reactance (Xc), or resistance (R). Sixty-one (male n=35, female n=26) healthy young adults (23.4±3.9 years) completed bioelectrical impedance analysis (Inbody770) and a 3MAOT. The correlations between PhA, Xc, and R and 3MAOT results were evaluated using correlations. Simple and multiple linear-regressions were used to test if results from the 3MAOT (maximum running speed, CS, D') could predict PhA. Linear regression analysis indicated that maximum running speed and CS alone explained 32% and 9% of the variance in PhA, respectively (R2=0.32, p<0.05; R2=0.09, p<0.05). Multiple linear regression indicated that maximum running speed, CS, and D' explained 35% of the variance in PhA (R2=0.35; p<0.05). Only maximum running speed remained a significant predictor of PhA after controlling for age (ß=0.45; p<0.05), but not after controlling for both age and sex (ß=0.14; p>0.05). Since maximum running speed was a stronger predictor of PhA compared to CS (proxy for endurance performance), practitioners should use discernment when using PhA as a readiness tool to monitor endurance performance.

Se trata de una técnica sencilla de realizar para el paciente, que, además, aporta información adicional a las pruebas de función respiratoria clásicas. No solamente nos indica la alteración que existe en la vía aérea, sino que localiza a qué altura se produce (central o periférica). El objetivo es acercar esta técnica al personal sanitario y hacer más sencilla su interpretación. (AU)


Oscillometry is a tool that is gradually making its way into the daily routine of pneumology and allergology. It is a simple technique for the patient, which also provides additional information to the classic respiratory function tests. It not only indicates if there is an alteration in the airway, but also locates where it occurs (central or peripheral). The aim is to bring this technique closer to healthcare professionals and facilitate its interpretation. (AU)

INTRODUCTION: Reactance inversion (RI) has been associated with impaired peripheral airway function in persistent asthma. However, there is little to no data about the difference between asthmatic children with and without RI. This study aimed to detect clinical and lung function differences in moderate-severe asthmatic children with and without RI. METHODS: This study was conducted between 2021 and 2022 in asthmatic school-age children. Impulse oscillometry (IOS) and spirometry were performed according to ATS/ERS standards. RESULTS: A total of 62 patients, with a mean age of 8.4 years, 54.8% were males and were divided into three groups: group 1 (32.3%) with no RI, group 2 (27.4%) with RI but disappearing after bronchodilator test and group 3 (40.3%) with persistent RI after bronchodilator test. Children in groups 2 and 3 had significantly lower birth weights than in group 1. Group 2 had lower gestational age compared to group 1. FEV1 and FEF25-75 of forced vital capacity were significantly lower in groups 2 and 3. In group 3, R5, AX, R5-20, and R5-R20/R5 ratios were significantly higher. Bronchodilator responses (BDR) in X5c, AX, and R5-R20 were significantly different between groups and lower in group 3. CONCLUSION: RI is frequently found in children with moderate-severe persistent asthma, particularly in those with a history of prematurity or low birth weight. In some patients, RI disappears after the bronchodilator test; however, it, persists in those with the worst pulmonary function. RI could be a small airway dysfunction marker.

Introduction: The aim was to analyze the response of serum levels of inflammatory, high-energy muscle biomarkers and hamstring localized bioimpedance (L-BIA) measurements to marathon running and to ascertain whether they correlate with each other or with race time. Methods: Blood samples and hamstrings tetra-polar L-BIA measurements from 14 Caucasian male recreational athletes at the Barcelona Marathon 2019 were collected at base line, immediately after and 48 h post-race. Serum C reactive protein (sCRP), creatinine kinase (sCK) and lactate dehydrogenase (sLDH) were determined using an AU-5800 chemistry analyzer. L-BIA was obtained at 50 kHz with a Quantum V Segmental phase-sensitive bioimpedance analyzer. Results: Median sCRP increased (4-fold) after 48 h post-race. Median sCK and sLDH levels increased immediately post-race (3-fold, 2-fold) and 48h post-race (5-fold, 1-fold). Left, right and combined hamstring reactance (Xc) and phase angle (PhA) increased immediately post-race. Xc combined hamstring pre- and immediately post-race correlated with race-time and with sCK and sLDH median levels pre-race. Xc combined hamstring pre- and immediately post-race > 15.6 Ω and 15.8 Ω, respectively, predicted the race time of 3:00:00 h. Conclusion: L-BIA reactance (Xc) is an objective direct, real time, easy, noninvasive bioelectrical parameter that may predict muscle and marathon athlete performance.

OBJECTIVE: Psychological reactance can undermine the persuasiveness of smoking campaigns, but this effect may vary as a function of culture. Previous research has been conducted at the national level or examined the influence of one cultural variable. This study investigated whether the boomerang effect of controlling language varied across countries and whether individualism and power distance moderated the relationship between controlling language and psychological reactance. METHODS: A total of 400 Chinese and 441 American smokers were randomly assigned to either high or low controlling language. RESULTS: High controlling language elicited psychological reactance, which caused negative attitudes and eventually reduced intentions to quit smoking in both countries. Moreover, the effect of controlling language on reactance was stronger among low power distance Americans, Chinese of high individualism and high power distance as well as of low individualism and low power distance. CONCLUSION: The boomerang effect of controlling language held across cultures. Power distance moderated the relationship between controlling language and psychological reactance as well as the moderation effect of individualism on this relationship. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS: Practitioners should be cautious to evoke reactance especially when targeting at the three groups mentioned above.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Fluid overload is a common postoperative complication in patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Although this condition is notably associated with relevant adverse outcomes, assessment of hydration status in clinical practice is challenging. Bioelectrical impedance vector analysis (BIVA) has emerged as a potentially effective method to monitor hydration changes, but the available evidence in critically ill patients undergoing cardiac surgery is limited and sometimes conflicting. The aim of this study was to explore by mean of BIVA the evolution over time of hydration status and its impact on relevant outcomes. METHODS: Prospective observational study enrolling 130 patients undergoing cardiac surgery. Height normalized impedance was calculated both before surgery (baseline) and in the first five postoperative days. Relevant clinical and laboratory data were collected daily close to BIVA measurements. Length of mechanical ventilation (MV), intensive care unit (ICU) and hospital stay exceeding the 75th percentile of the study population were considered as study endpoints. RESULTS: Compared to baseline, a significant reduction in impedance was found at first postoperative day, demonstrating a relevant fluid overload. An adjusted impedance at first postoperative day shorter than the best respective threshold was associated to longer MV (7.4 times), ICU stay (4.7 times) and hospital stay (5.6 times). A significant change in impedance and phase angle was documented throughout the observation days (p < 0.001), without returning to the baseline value. The co-existence of low impedance and high plasma osmolarity increased significantly the risk of incurring the study outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with cardiac surgery-induced fluid overload, recovery to baseline conditions occurs slowly. A relevant early fluid overload should be considered predictive for longer time of MV, ICU and total hospital stay.

BACKGROUND: Intra-breath oscillometry has been proposed as a sensitive means of detecting airway obstruction in young children. We aimed to assess the impact of early life wheezing and lower respiratory tract illness on lung function, using both standard and intra-breath oscillometry in 3 year old children. METHODS: History of doctor-diagnosed asthma, wheezing, bronchiolitis and bronchitis and hospitalisation for respiratory problems were assessed by questionnaires in 384 population-based children. Association of respiratory history with standard and intra-breath oscillometry parameters, including resistance at 7 Hz (R7), frequency-dependence of resistance (R7 - 19), reactance at 7 Hz (X7), area of the reactance curve (AX), end-inspiratory and end-expiratory R (ReI, ReE) and X (XeI, XeE), and volume-dependence of resistance (ΔR = ReE-ReI) was estimated by linear regression adjusted on confounders. RESULTS: Among the 320 children who accepted the oscillometry test, 281 (88%) performed 3 technically acceptable and reproducible standard oscillometry measurements and 251 children also performed one intra-breath oscillometry measurement. Asthma was associated with higher ReI, ReE, ΔR and R7 and wheezing was associated with higher ΔR. Bronchiolitis was associated with higher R7 and AX and lower XeI and bronchitis with higher ReI. No statistically significant association was observed for hospitalisation. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings confirm the good success rate of oscillometry in 3-year-old children and indicate an association between a history of early-life wheezing and lower respiratory tract illness and lower lung function as assessed by both standard and intra-breath oscillometry. Our study supports the relevance of using intra-breath oscillometry parameters as sensitive outcome measures in preschool children in epidemiological cohorts.

BACKGROUND: Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive disease with a poor prognosis. Pulmonary function tests (PFTs) aid in evaluating the disease status of IPF. The clinical significance of oscillometry measurements in interstitial lung diseases has recently been reported. Our previous study showed that respiratory reactance (Xrs) measured by oscillometry reflected disease severity and predicted subsequent lung capacity decline in patients with IPF. However, the direct impact of Xrs on survival needs to be determined, and there are currently no reference values in oscillometry to predict prognosis. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the association between oscillometry measurements, particularly Xrs, and survival in patients with IPF and to determine the cutoff values of Xrs that predict 3-year survival. METHODS: We analyzed the relationship between the measured values of PFT and oscillometry derived from 178 patients with IPF. Univariate and multivariate Cox proportional hazards analyses were performed to investigate the relationships between clinical indices at the time of the first oscillometry and survival. We performed the time-dependent receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis to set the optimized cutoff values of Xrs for 3-year survival prediction. We examined the discriminating power of cutoff values of Xrs on survival using the Kaplan-Meier method and the log-rank test. RESULTS: Xrs components, especially in the inspiratory phase (In), significantly correlated with the PFT values. In the multivariate analyses, Xrs (all of reactance at 5 Hz [X5], resonant frequency [Fres], and low-frequency reactance area [ALX] in the inspiratory phase) had a significant impact on survival (X5, p = 0.003; Fres, p = 0.016; ALX, p = 0.003) independent of age, sex, and other prognostic factors derived from the univariate analysis. The area under the ROC curve was 0.765, 0.759, and 0.766 for X5 In, Fres In, and ALX In, with cutoff values determined at - 0.98, 10.67, and 5.32, respectively. We found significant differences in survival after dividing patients using each of the cutoff values of Xrs. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with IPF, Xrs measured by oscillometry significantly impacted survival. We also determined the cutoff values of Xrs to discriminate patients with poor prognoses.

INTRODUCTION: Air-trapping affects clinical outcomes in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and may be detected by reactance at 5 Hz (X5) on respiratory oscillometry because X5 sensitively reflects the elasticity of the chest wall, airway and lung. However, the longitudinal association between X5 and air-trapping remains to be explored. This study aimed to test whether longitudinal changes in X5 could be associated with air-trapping progression, exacerbations, and mortality in patients with COPD. METHODS: In this prospective COPD observational study, the follow-up period consisted of the first 4 years to obtain longitudinal changes in X5 and residual volume (RV) and number of exacerbations and the remaining years (year 4 to 10) to test mortality. Patients were divided into large, middle, and small X5 decline groups based on the tertiles of longitudinal change in X5, and mortality after 4 years was compared between the groups. RESULTS: Patients with COPD (n = 114) were enrolled. The large X5 decline group (n = 38) showed a greater longitudinal change in RV and more exacerbations compared with the small X5 decline group (n = 39) in multivariable models adjusted for age, sex, body mass index, and smoking history. Long-term mortality after the 4-year follow-up was higher in the large X5 decline group than in the small X5 decline group (hazard ratio [95 % confidence interval] = 8.37[1.01, 69.0]) in the multivariable Cox proportional hazard model. CONCLUSION: Longitudinal changes in respiratory reactance could be associated with progressive air-trapping, exacerbation frequency, and increased mortality in patients with COPD.

BACKGROUND: The forced oscillation technique (FOT) enables non-invasive measurement of respiratory system impedance. Limited data exists on how changes in operating lung volume (OLV) impact FOT-derived measures of airway resistance (Rrs) and reactance (Xrs). OBJECTIVES: This study examined the reproducibility and responsiveness of FOT-derived measures of Rrs and Xrs during simulated changes in OLV. METHODS: Participants simulated breathing at six OLVs: total lung capacity (TLC), ∼50% of inspiratory reserve volume (IRV50), ∼two-times tidal volume (VT2), tidal volume (VT), ∼50% of expiratory reserve volume (ERV50), and residual volume (RV), on a commercially available FOT device. Each simulated OLV manuever was performed in triplicate and in random order. Total Rrs and Xrs were recorded at 5, 11, and 19 Hz. RESULTS: Twelve healthy participants (2 female) completed the study (weight: 76.5 ± 13.6 kg, height: 178.6 ± 9.7 cm, body mass index: 23.9 ± 3.1 kg/m2). Reproducibility of Rrs and Xrs at VT, VT2 and IRV50 was good to excellent (Range: ICC: 0.89-0.98, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.70-0.98), while reproducibility at TLC, RV, and ERV50 was poor to excellent (Range: ICC: 0.60-0.98, 95% CI: 0.36-0.97). Rrs and Xrs were not different between VT and VT2 at any frequency (P > .05). With lung hyperinflation from VT to TLC, Rrs and Xrs decreased at all three frequencies (e.g., At 5 Hz Rrs: mean difference (MD): - 0.89, 95%CI: - 0.03 to - 1.75, P = .04; Xrs: MD: - 0.56, 95%CI: - 0.25 to - 0.86, P < .01). With lung hypoinflated from VT to RV, Rrs increased, and Xrs decreased for all frequencies (e.g., MD at 5 Hz, Rrs: MD: 2.31, 95%CI: 0.94-3.67, P < .01; Xrs: MD: -2.53, 95%CI: -4.02 to -1.04, P < .01). CONCLUSION: FOT-derived measures of airway Rrs and Xrs are reproducible across a range of OLV's, and are responsive to hyper- and hypo-inflation of the lung. To further understand the impact of lung hyper- and hypo-inflation on FOT-derived airway impedance additional study is required in individuals with pathological variations in operating lung volume.

BACKGROUND: As illustrated by the COVID-19 pandemic, communicating evidence-based health recommendations represents a tremendous challenge; among some recipients, public health messages can cause anger and negative cognitions, also known as psychological reactance, and consequently lead to negative attitudes and low intentions to perform the promoted behavior. The present study investigated the role of message characteristics (i.e. high vs. low freedom-threat messages), individuals' trust in science (i.e. high vs. low trust in science), and their interaction in determining responses to public health messages. METHODS: We conducted an experimental study, in which participants (N = 228) with high or low trust in science were exposed to high or low freedom-threat messages promoting mask-wearing to reduce the spread of COVID-19 and regular physical activity. RESULTS: We found support for the notion that messages imposing high threat to freedom lead to higher state psychological reactance, and more negative attitudes and behavioral intentions. Moreover, our results showed that trust in science has a main and interaction effect (together with message characteristics) on state reactance, behavioral intentions, and - to a lesser degree - attitudes, in the case of COVID-19, but not physical activity messages. The findings remained the same regardless of controlling for other relevant variables. CONCLUSIONS: While our study has some limitations, such as a rather homogeneous sample, a limited number of experimental stimuli, and a relatively artificial experimental environment, it offers some insight into the important role of health communication recipients' trust in science and provides advice on how to communicate health recommendations to skeptics.

Peak spirometry after single lung transplantation (SLTx) for interstitial lung disease (ILD) is lower than after double lung transplantation (DLTx), however the pathophysiologic mechanisms are unclear. We aim to assess respiratory mechanics in SLTx and DLTx for ILD using oscillometry. Spirometry and oscillometry (tremoflo® C-100) were performed in stable SLTx and DLTx recipients in a multi-center study. Resistance (R5, R5-19) and reactance (X5) were compared between LTx recipient groups, matched by age and gender. A model of respiratory impedance using ILD and DLTx data was performed. In total, 45 stable LTx recipients were recruited (SLTx n = 23, DLTx n = 22; males: 87.0% vs. 77.3%; median age 63.0 vs. 63.0 years). Spirometry was significantly lower after SLTx compared with DLTx: %-predicted mean (SD) FEV1 [70.0 (14.5) vs. 93.5 (26.0)%]; FVC [70.5 (16.8) vs. 90.7 (12.8)%], p < 0.01. R5 and R5-19 were similar between groups (p = 0.94 and p = 0.11, respectively) yet X5 was significantly worse after SLTx: median (IQR) X5 [-1.88 (-2.89 to -1.39) vs. -1.22 (-1.87 to -0.86)] cmH2O.s/L], p < 0.01. R5 and X5 measurements from the model were congruent with measurements in SLTx recipients. The similarities in resistance, yet differences in spirometry and reactance between both transplant groups suggest the important contribution of elastic properties to the pathophysiology. Oscillometry may provide further insight into the physiological changes occurring post-LTx.

Anti-science attitudes can be resilient to scientific evidence if they are rooted in psychological motives. One such motive is trait reactance, which refers to the need to react with opposition when one's freedom of choice has been threatened. In three studies, we investigated trait reactance as a psychological motivation to reject vaccination. In the longitudinal studies (n = 199; 293), we examined if trait reactance measured before the COVID-19 pandemic was related to people's willingness to get vaccinated against COVID-19 up to 2 years later during the pandemic. In the experimental study (n = 398), we tested whether trait reactance makes anti-vaccination attitudes more resistant to information and whether this resistance can be mitigated by framing the information to minimize the risk of triggering state reactance. The longitudinal studies showed that higher trait reactance before the COVID-19 pandemic was related to lower willingness to get vaccinated against COVID-19. Our experimental study indicated that highly reactant individuals' willingness to vaccinate was unaffected by the amount and framing of the information provided. Trait reactance has a strong and durable impact on vaccination willingness. This highlights the importance of considering the role of trait reactance in people's vaccination-related decision-making.
