RESUMEN

Navigation of male moths towards females during the mating search offers a unique perspective on the exploration-exploitation (EE) model in decision-making. This study uses the EE model to explain male moth pheromone-driven flight paths. Wind tunnel measurements and three-dimensional tracking using infrared cameras have been leveraged to gain insights into male moth behaviour. During the experiments in the wind tunnel, disturbance to the airflow has been added and the effect of increased fluctuations on moth flights has been analysed, in the context of the proposed EE model. The exploration and exploitation phases are separated using a genetic algorithm to the experimentally obtained dataset of moth three-dimensional trajectories. First, the exploration-to-exploitation rate (EER) increases with distance from the source of the female pheromone is demonstrated, which can be explained in the context of the EE model. Furthermore, our findings reveal a compelling relationship between EER and increased flow fluctuations near the pheromone source. Using an olfactory navigation simulation and our moth-inspired navigation model, the phenomenon where male moths exhibit an enhanced EER as turbulence levels increase is explained. This research extends our understanding of optimal navigation strategies based on general biological EE models and supports the development of bioinspired navigation algorithms.

RESUMEN

To address the extended development cycle, high costs, and maintenance difficulties associated with existing microgravity simulation methods, this study has developed a semi-physical simulation platform for robotic arms tailored to different gravity environments and loading conditions. The platform represents difficult-to-model joints as physical objects, while the easily modeled components are simulated based on principles of similarity. In response to the strong coupling, nonlinearity, and excess force disturbance issues in the electric variable load loading system, a fractional-order linear active disturbance rejection control algorithm was employed. The controller parameters were tuned using an improved particle swarm algorithm with modified weight coefficients, and experimental results demonstrate that a fractional-order linear active disturbance rejection control improves response speed and disturbance rejection performance compared to linear sliding mode control. The study investigated the differences in the drive force of joint motors in space robotic arms under varying gravity environments and loading conditions. Experimental results indicate that load torque is the primary influencing factor on joint motor drive force, while radial force serves as a secondary influencing factor. Additionally, when the axis of the joint motor is perpendicular to the ground, it can, to some extent, simulate microgravity conditions on the ground.

RESUMEN

In Fenwei Basin, most of the tectonic ground fissures show characteristics of growth faults on the section. They continue to destroy the engineering properties of soil at different depths. This has introduced significant security risks to the construction processes of deep underground spaces. However, there are few studies have been conducted on syn-depositional ground fissures. Therefore, in this study, a physical simulation test was used to study the fracture propagation of syn-depositional ground fissures. The characteristics of sections and surface fractures were analyzed. The engineering properties of model soil were divided into bad and poor areas. The syn-depositional ground fissure fracture propagation process was divided into five phases. The results show that soil profile exhibited a composite Y-shaped fracture morphology. Syn-deposition affects the fracture angle and healing state of fractures. The soil strain and surface displacement were positively correlated with the number of deposition layers. The conclusions of this study provide a theoretical geological basis and practical engineering significance for design of deep underground space structures.

RESUMEN

Rockfalls are an important factor affecting underground engineering safety. However, there has been limited progress in understanding and predicting these disasters in the past few years. Therefore, a large-scale three-dimensional experimental simulation apparatus to study failure mechanisms of rockfalls occurring during underground engineering was developed. This apparatus, measuring 4 m × 4 m × 3.3 m in size, can achieve vertical and horizontal symmetric loading. It not only simulates the structure and stress environment of a rock mass but also simulates the stepwise excavation processes involved in underground engineering. A complete simulation experiment of rockfalls in an underground engineering context was performed using this apparatus. Dynamic evolution characteristics of block displacement, temperature, natural vibration frequency, and acoustic emissions occurring during rockfalls were studied during the simulation. These data indicate there are several indicators that could be used to predict rockfalls in underground engineering contexts, leading to better prevention and control.

RESUMEN

Clarifying the mechanisms underlying shape alterations during insect metamorphosis is important for understanding exoskeletal morphogenesis. The large horn of the Japanese rhinoceros beetle Trypoxylus dichotomus is the result of drastic metamorphosis, wherein it appears as a rounded shape during pupation and then undergoes remodeling into an angular adult shape. However, the mechanical mechanisms underlying this remodeling process remain unknown. In this study, we investigated the remodeling mechanisms of the Japanese rhinoceros beetle horn by developing a physical simulation. We identified three factors contributing to remodeling by biological experiments - ventral adhesion, uneven shrinkage, and volume reduction - which were demonstrated to be crucial for transformation using a physical simulation. Furthermore, we corroborated our findings by applying the simulation to the mandibular remodeling of stag beetles. These results indicated that physical simulation applies to pupal remodeling in other beetles, and the morphogenic mechanism could explain various exoskeletal shapes.

RESUMEN

To address the issue of ineffective injection resulting from the consistent channeling of injected water through highly permeable channels in ultra-deep, high-temperature, high-salinity, and strongly heterogeneous reservoirs during the production process, a gel particle profile control agent suitable for high-temperature and high-salinity conditions was chosen. With the help of the glass etching visual microscopic model and the heterogeneous long core model, the formation mechanism of a water flooding channeling path and the distribution law of the remaining oil were explored, the microscopic profile control mechanism of the different parameters was clarified, and the profile control effect of macroscopic core displacement was analyzed. The research shows that the formation mechanism of a water flooding channeling path is dominated by the distribution law of the permeability section and the connection mode between different penetration zones. The remaining oil types after water flooding are mainly contiguous block, parallel throats, and multi-branch clusters. The profile control effect of gel particles on reservoir vertical heterogeneity is better than that of reservoir lateral heterogeneity. It was found that 10 wt% submicron particles with a median diameter of 600 nm play a good role in profiling and plugging pores of 5-20 µm. In addition, 10 wt% micron-sized particles with a median diameter of 2.63 µm mainly play a strong plugging role in the pores of 20-30 µm, and 5 wt% micron-sized particles with a median diameter of 2.63 µm mainly form a weak plugging effect on the pores of 10-20 µm. The overall profile control effect of 10 wt% submicro particles is the best, and changes in concentration parameters have a more significant effect on the profile control effect. In the macroscopic core profile control, enhanced oil recovery (EOR) can reach 16%, and the gel particles show plugging, deformation migration, and re-plugging. The research results provide theoretical guidance for tapping the potential of the remaining oil in strong heterogeneous reservoirs. To date, the gel particles have been applied in the Tahe oilfield and have produced an obvious profile control effect; the oil production has risen to the highest value of 26.4 t/d, and the comprehensive water content has fallen to the lowest percentage of 32.1%.

RESUMEN

Medium and heavy plates are important strategic materials, which are widely used in many fields, such as large ships, weapons and armor, large bridges, and super high-rise buildings. However, the traditional control technology cannot meet the high-precision control requirements of the roll gap of the thick plate mill, resulting in errors in the thickness of the medium and heavy plate, thereby reducing the quality of the product. In response to this problem, this paper takes the 5500 mm thick plate production line as the research background, and establishes the model of the rolling mill plate thickness automatic control system, using the Ziegler-Nichol response curve method (Z-N), particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm and linear weight particle swarm optimization (LWPSO) algorithm, respectively, optimizes the parameter setting of the PID controller of the system, and uses OPC UA communication technology to realize the online semi-physical simulation of Siemens S7-1500 series PLC (Siemens, Munich, Germany) and MATLAB R2018b (The MathWorks, Natick, Massachusetts, United States). Comparative studies show that when the same roll gap displacement step signal is given, the overshoot of the system response using the LWPSO algorithm is reduced by 14.26% and 10.18% compared with the Z-N algorithm and the PSO algorithm, and the peak time is advanced by 0.31 s and 0.05 s. The stabilization time is reduced by 3.71 s and 4.31 s, which effectively improves the control accuracy and speed of the system and has stronger anti-interference ability. It has certain engineering reference and application value.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the results of a study on the development of a Metal active gas (MAG) welding technology for an industrial furnace component made of steel S235JRC+N with respect to the minimizationof welding deformation. A numerical simulation of the welding process was performed in the first phase of the research. The numerical simulation was carried out with the SYSWELD software. For the numerical simulation of the welding process, the FEM method was used. In the simulation, four variants of restraint of the industrial furnace wall panel elements during the execution of the welding process were investigated. They differed in the number of restraints (model 1-4). It was found that the difference between the maximum mean strain in model 1 and the lowest mean strain in model 4 was only 11%. A physical simulation of the welding process was then performed with a restraint variant according to model 1. The displacement results obtained from the physical simulation of the welding process were compared with the displacement results from the numerical simulation. Discrepancies between numerical and physical simulation displacement values were found. The quality of selected welded joints was also evaluated. Visual testing (VT) and measurements of weld geometries were performed for this purpose. Metallographic tests and hardness measurements were performed to determine of influence of the welding process on the microstructure of the welded joint area, especially the heat affected zone (HAZ). The results obtained confirm the correctness of the assumptions made regarding the technology of manufacturing the furnace wall panels.

RESUMEN

The flow pattern is vital for the metallurgical performance of continuous casting tundishes. The purpose of this study was to design and optimize the flow characteristics inside a four-strand tundish. Numerical simulations and water model experiments were validated and utilized to investigate the flow behavior. The effect of different flow rates in the original tundish was evaluated; two modified retaining walls and a new ladle shroud were designed for optimization. The molten steel inside the original tundish tends to be more active as the flow rate increases from 3.8 L/min to 6.2 L/min, which results in a reduction in dead volume from 36.47% to 17.59% and better consistency between different outlets. The dead volume and outlet consistency inside the tundish are improved significantly when the modified walls are applied. The proper design of the diversion hole further enhances the plug volume from 6.39% to 13.44% of the tundish by forming an upstream circular flow in the casting zone. In addition, the new trumpet ladle shroud demonstrates an advantage in increasing the response time from 152.5 s to 167.5 s and alleviating the turbulence in the pouring zone, which is beneficial for clean steel production.

RESUMEN

Eukaryotic cells fold their membranes into highly organized structures called membrane-bound organelles. Organelles display characteristic structures and perform specialized functions related to their structures. Focusing on the Golgi apparatus, we provide an overview of recent theoretical studies to explain the mechanism of the architecture of the Golgi apparatus. These studies are classified into two categories: those that use equilibrium models to describe the robust Golgi morphology and those that use non-equilibrium models to explain the stationarity of the Golgi structures and the constant streaming of membrane traffic. A combinational model of both categories was used for computational reconstruction of the de novo Golgi formation process, which might provide an insight into the integrated understanding of the Golgi structure.

RESUMEN

The motion complexity and use of exotic materials in soft robotics call for accurate and computationally efficient models intended for control. To reduce the gap between material and control-oriented research, we build upon the existing piece-wise constant curvature framework by incorporating hyperelastic and viscoelastic material behavior. In this work, the continuum dynamics of the soft robot are derived through the differential geometry of spatial curves, which are then related to finite-element data to capture the intrinsic geometric and material nonlinearities. To enable fast simulations, a reduced-order integration scheme is introduced to compute the dynamic Lagrangian matrices efficiently, which in turn allows for real-time (multilink) models with sufficient numerical precision. By exploring the passivity and using the parameterization of the hyperelastic model, we propose a passivity-based adaptive controller that enhances robustness toward material uncertainty and unmodeled dynamics-slowly improving their estimates online. As a study-case, a soft robot manipulator is developed through additive manufacturing, which shows good correspondence with the dynamic model under various conditions, for example, natural oscillations, forced inputs, and under tip-loads. The solidity of the approach is demonstrated through extensive simulations, numerical benchmarks, and experimental validations.

RESUMEN

Architectural design and urban planning are complex design tasks. Predicting the thermal impact of design choices at interactive rates enhances the ability of designers to improve energy efficiency and avoid problematic heat islands while maintaining design quality. We show how to use and adapt methods from computer graphics to efficiently simulate heat transfer via thermal radiation, thereby improving user guidance in the early design phase of large-scale construction projects and helping to increase energy efficiency and outdoor comfort. Our method combines a hardware-accelerated photon tracing approach with a carefully selected finite element discretization, inspired by precomputed radiance transfer. This combination allows us to precompute a radiative transport operator, which we then use to rapidly solve either steady-state or transient heat transport throughout the entire scene. Our formulation integrates time-dependent solar irradiation data without requiring changes in the transport operator, allowing us to quickly analyze many different scenarios such as common weather patterns, monthly or yearly averages, or transient simulations spanning multiple days or weeks. We show how our approach can be used for interactive design workflows such as city planning via fast feedback in the early design phase.

RESUMEN

Ultrasonic imaging logging can visually identify the location, shape, dip angle and orientation of fractures and holes. The method has not been effectively applied in the field; one of the prime reasons is that the results of physical simulation experiments are insufficient. The physical simulation of fracture and hole response in the laboratory can provide a reference for the identification and evaluation of the underground geological structure. In this work, ultrasonic scanning experiments are conducted on a grooved sandstone plate and a simulated borehole and the influence of different fractures and holes on ultrasonic pulse echo is studied. Experimental results show that the combination of ultrasonic echo amplitude imaging and arrival time imaging can be used to identify the fracture location, width, depth and orientation, along with accurately calculating the fracture dip angle. The evaluated fracture parameters are similar to those in the physical simulation model. The identification accuracy of the ultrasonic measurement is related to the diameter of the radiation beam of the ultrasonic transducer. A single fracture with width larger than or equal to the radiation beam diameter of the ultrasonic transducer and multiple fractures with spacing longer than or equal to the radiation beam diameter can be effectively identified.

RESUMEN

The grain structure of the selective laser melting additive manufactured parts has been shown to be heterogeneous and spatially non-uniform compared to the traditional manufacturing process. However, the complex formation mechanism of these unique grain structures is hard to reveal using the experimental method alone. In this study, we presented a high-fidelity 3D numerical model to address the grain growth mechanisms during the selective laser melting of 316 stainless steel, including two heating modes, i.e., conduction mode and keyhole mode melting. In the numerical model, the powder-scale thermo-fluid dynamics are simulated using the finite volume method with the volume of fluid method. At the same time, the grain structure evolution is sequentially predicted by the cellular automaton method with the predicted temperature field and the as-melted powder bed configuration as input. The simulation results agree well with the experimental data available in the literature. The influence of the process parameters and the keyhole and keyhole-induced void on grain structure formation are addressed in detail. The findings of this study are helpful to the optimization of process parameters for tailoring the microstructure of fabricated parts with expected mechanical properties.

RESUMEN

Deep simulations have gained widespread attention owing to their excellent acceleration performances. However, these methods cannot provide effective collision detection and response strategies. We propose a deep interactive physical simulation framework that can effectively address tool-object collisions. The framework can predict the dynamic information by considering the collision state. In particular, the graph neural network is chosen as the base model, and a collision-aware recursive regression module is introduced to update the network parameters recursively using interpenetration distances calculated from the vertex-face and edge-edge tests. Additionally, a novel self-supervised collision term is introduced to provide a more compact collision response. This study extensively evaluates the proposed method and shows that it effectively reduces interpenetration artifacts while ensuring high simulation efficiency.

RESUMEN

To achieve rapid and sensitive detection of aflatoxin B1 (AFB1), we developed a polydimethylsiloxane gravity-driven cyclic microfluidic chip using the two-signal mode strategy. The structural design of the chip, together with the two-wavelength quantum dot ratio fluorescence, effectively eliminates the influence of environmental factors, improves the signal stability, and ensures that the final detection result positively correlates with the target concentration. Moreover, the theoretical analysis performed for the established physical model of the three-dimensional reaction interface inside the chip confirmed the improved reaction rate of immune adsorption in the microfluidic strategy. Overall, the method exhibited a wide analytic range (0.2-500 ng mL-1), low detection limit (0.06 ng mL-1), high specificity, good precision (coefficient of variation < 5%), excellent reusability (20 times, 89.1%) and satisfactory practical sample analysis capacity. Furthermore, the reusability and designability of this chip provide a reliable scheme for field detection of AFB1, analysis of other small molecules, and establishment of high-throughput detection systems under different conditions.

RESUMEN

The paper describes physical and numerical simulations of a manufacturing process composed of hot forging and controlled cooling, which replace the conventional heat treatment technology. The objective was to investigate possibilities and limitations of the heat treatment with the use of the heat of forging. Three steels used to manufacture automotive parts were investigated. Experiments were composed of two sets of tests. The first were isothermal (TTT) and constant cooling rate (CCT) dilatometric tests, which supplied data for the identification of the numerical phase transformation model. The second was a physical simulation of the sequence forging-cooling on Gleeble 3800, which supplied data for the validation of the models. In the numerical part, a finite element (FE) thermal-mechanical code was combined with metallurgical models describing recrystallization and grain growth during forging and phase transformations during cooling. The FE model predicted distributions of the temperature and the austenite grain size in the forging, which were input data for further simulations of phase transformations during cooling. A modified JMAK equation was used to calculate the kinetics of transformation and volume fraction of microstructural constituents after cooling. Since the dilatometric tests were performed for various austenitization temperatures before cooling, it was possible to include austenite grain size as a variable in the model. An inverse algorithm developed by the authors was applied in the identification procedure. The model with optimal material parameters was used for simulations of hot forging and controlled cooling in one of the forging shops in Poland. Distributions of microstructural constituents in the forging after cooling were calculated. As a consequence, various cooling sequences during heat treatment could be analyzed and compared.

RESUMEN

Neonatal endotracheal intubation (ETI) is a complex procedure. Low intubation success rates for pediatric residents indicate the current training regimen is inadequate for achieving positive patient out-comes. Computer-based training systems in this field have been limited due to the complex nature of simulating in real-time, the anatomical structures, soft tissue deformations and frequent tool interactions with large forces which occur during actual patient intubation. This paper addresses the issues of neonatal ETI training in an attempt to bridge the gap left by traditional training methods. We propose a fully interactive physics-based virtual reality (VR) simulation framework for neonatal ETI that converts the training of this medical procedure to a completely immersive virtual environment where both visual and physical realism were achieved. Our system embeds independent dynamics models and interaction devices in separate modules while allowing them to interact with each other within the same environment, which offers a flexible solution for multi-modal medical simulation scenarios. The virtual model was extracted from CT scans of a neonatal patient, which provides realistic anatomical structures and was parameterized to allow variations in a range of features that affect the level of difficulty. Moreover, with this manikin-free VR system, we can capture and visualize an even larger set of performance parameters in relation to the internal geometric change of the virtual model for real-time guidance and post-trial assessment. Lastly, validation study results from a group of neonatologists are presented demonstrating that VR is a promising platform to train medical professionals effectively for this procedure.

RESUMEN

In brain tumor surgery, an appropriate and careful surgical planning process is crucial for surgeons and can determine the success or failure of the surgery. A deep comprehension of spatial relationships between tumor borders and surrounding healthy tissues enables accurate surgical planning that leads to the identification of the optimal and patient-specific surgical strategy. A physical replica of the region of interest is a valuable aid for preoperative planning and simulation, allowing the physician to directly handle the patient's anatomy and easily study the volumes involved in the surgery. In the literature, different anatomical models, produced with 3D technologies, are reported and several methodologies were proposed. Many of them share the idea that the employment of 3D printing technologies to produce anatomical models can be introduced into standard clinical practice since 3D printing is now considered to be a mature technology. Therefore, the main aim of the paper is to take into account the literature best practices and to describe the current workflow and methodology used to standardize the pre-operative virtual and physical simulation in neurosurgery. The main aim is also to introduce these practices and standards to neurosurgeons and clinical engineers interested in learning and implementing cost-effective in-house preoperative surgical planning processes. To assess the validity of the proposed scheme, four clinical cases of preoperative planning of brain cancer surgery are reported and discussed. Our preliminary results showed that the proposed methodology can be applied effectively in the neurosurgical clinical practice both in terms of affordability and in terms of simulation realism and efficacy.
