RESUMEN

Functionally graded CNT (carbon nanotube)-reinforced composites (FG-CNTRCs) are intensively studied because the mechanical behaviors of conventional composites can be dramatically improved. Only a small amount of CNTs are appropriately distributed through the thickness. However, the studies on conical shell panels have been poorly reported when compared with beams, plates and cylindrical shells, even though more parameters are associated with the mechanical behaviors of conical shell panels. In this context, this study intends to profoundly investigate the free vibration of FG-CNTRC conical shell panels by developing an effective and reliable 2-D (two-dimensional) numerical method. The displacement field is expressed using the first-order shear deformation shell theory, and it is approximated by the 2-D planar natural element method (NEM). The conical shell surface is transformed into the 2-D planar NEM grid, and the approach for MITC3+shell element is employed to suppress the shear locking. The developed numerical method is validated through the benchmark experiments, and the free vibration responses of FG-CNTRC conical shell panels are investigated with respect to all the associated parameters. It is found from the numerical results that the free vibration of FG-CNTRC conical shell panels is significantly influenced by the volume fraction and distribution pattern of CNTs, the geometry parameters of the conical shell, and the boundary condition.

RESUMEN

This report examines the heat and mass transfer in three-dimensional second grade non-Newtonian fluid in the presence of a variable magnetic field. Heat transfer is presented with the involvement of thermal relaxation time and variable thermal conductivity. The generalized theory for mass flux with variable mass diffusion coefficient is considered in the transport of species. The conservation laws are modeled in simplified form via boundary layer theory which results as a system of coupled non-linear partial differential equations. Group similarity analysis is engaged for the conversion of derived conservation laws in the form of highly non-linear ordinary differential equations. The solution is obtained vial optimal homotopy procedure (OHP). The convergence of the scheme is shown through error analysis. The obtained solution is displayed through graphs and tables for different influential parameters.

RESUMEN

Parametric investigations related to shoulder angle on tool geometry for a combined cold extrusion of a drive shaft, which consisted of spur gear and internal spline structures, were conducted through three-dimensional FE (finite element) simulations. The drive shaft was required to be about 92.00 mm for the face width of the top land on the spur gear part and roughly 22.70 mm for the groove depth of the internal spline section. AISI 1035 carbon steel material with a diameter of 50.00 mm and a length of 121.00 mm was spheroidized and annealed, then used as the initial billet material. A preform as an intermediate workpiece was adopted to avoid the excessive accumulation of plastic deformation during the combined cold extrusion. Accordingly, the cold forging process involves two extrusion operations such as a forward extrusion and a combined extrusion for the preform and the drive shaft. As the main geometric parameters influencing the dimensional quality and the deformed configuration of the final product, the two shoulder angles of θ1 and θ2 for the preform forging and the combined extrusion were both considered to be appropriate at 30°, 45°, and 60°, respectively. Using nine geometric parameter combinations, three-dimensional finite element simulations were performed, and these were used to evaluate the deformed features and the geometric compatibilities on the spur gear structure and the internal spline feature. Based on these comparative evaluations using the numerically simulated results, it is shown that the dimensional requirements of the target shape can be satisfied with the shoulder angle combination of (45°, 45°) for (θ1, θ2).

RESUMEN

Despite the use of helmets in American football, brain injuries are still prevalent. To reduce the burden of these injuries, novel impact mitigation systems are needed. The Vicis Zero1 (VZ1) American football helmet is unique in its use of multi-directional buckling structures sandwiched between a deformable outer shell and a stiff inner shell. The objective of this study was to develop a model of the VZ1 and to assess this unique characteristic for its role in mitigating head kinematics. The VZ1 model was developed using a bottom-up framework that emphasized material testing, constitutive model calibration, and component-level validation. Over 50 experimental tests were simulated to validate the VZ1 model. CORrelation and Analysis (CORA) was used to quantify the similarity between experimental and model head kinematics, neck forces, and impactor accelerations and forces. The VZ1 model demonstrated good correlation with an overall mean CORA score of 0.86. A parametric analysis on helmet compliance revealed that the outer shell and column stiffness influenced translational head kinematics more than rotational. For the material parameters investigated, head linear acceleration ranged from 80 to 220 g, whereas angular velocity ranged from 37 to 40 rad/s. This helmet model is open-source and serves as an in silico design platform for helmet innovation.
