RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The mental health of medical students is of critical importance during their medical studies, which can be a long and challenging period. Academic expectations, high workload, and emotional stress can contribute to mental burden and burnout among medical students, placing an increased burden on the healthcare system in the future. Therefore, psychological support and mental health services play a crucial role in medical education. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to present and examine the role of the Psychological Counseling Service at the University of Pécs Medical School in supporting the mental health of medical students since its establishment in 2007. METHOD: In this study, we present the combined quantitative and qualitative results from the period between November 2021 and May 2023, as registered by the students and staff utilizing the Service as well as the counseling psychologists working at the Service. The data include the number of consultations, the patterns of the most frequently occurring problems (based on the Counseling Professional Protocol), and the mental well-being of the population receiving psychological support (GHQ-12). RESULTS: During the examined period, a total of 1111 individuals made use of the Service in 2012 appointments. Both students and staff most commonly sought assistance from the Service in addressing relationship difficulties (37.6%) and coping with negative life events (33.1%). Based on the data collected since October 2022 (n = 113), nearly 10% of the attendees were taking medication for psychiatric treatment, a significantly higher percentage among international students. Furthermore, 38.9% had previously received professional help. The average score on the GHQ-12 questionnaire is 8 points, which is significantly above the 5-point threshold achieved by 78.6% of respondents. CONCLUSION: The results demonstrate that the Psychological Counseling Service at the University of Pécs Medical School plays a significant role in supporting the mental health of medical students. It contributes to more effective coping with academic challenges, reducing the risk of emotional stress and burnout. Orv Hetil. 2023; 164(45): 1778-1786.

RESUMEN

Introduction: In our globalised world, the role of intercultural competence in healthcare is increasing as societies become multicultural. The development of this competence should start in medical education. Objective: In our qualitative study among Hungarian medical students, we sought to find out to what extent the multicultural student composition of our elective course contributes to the development of their intercultural competence. Method: In our action research, semistructured focus group interviews were conducted with 35 Hungarian medical students between April and November, 2021. The transcripts of the digitally recorded interviews were evaluated using qualitative methods. Results: After a thematic analysis of the interviews, the vast majority of the students' opinions could be classified into one of the following four thematic categories: 1) the benefits of studying together with international students, 2) the development of cultural awareness, 3) the development of an open mindset, and 4) the expected longterm impact of intercultural competence on medical work. Overall, Hungarian students evaluated their learning in the multicultural course positively. Based on the results of the focus group interviews, it can be claimed that by the end of the semester, the Hungarian students' perceived intercultural competence had improved due to the course and its multicultural composition. Conclusion: The course, with its multicultural student population, can contribute to and promote the acquisition of intercultural competence, which in the long run can be effectively used by future doctors both in patient care and in effective communication within healthcare teams as well as in international medical, research and scientific collaborations. Providing a multicultural student environment in the classroom, including interactive teaching methodologies and intercultural project work, have many potentials to make the learning-teaching process more effective and could be applied in the future when developing new courses.

RESUMEN

Introduction: From 2015, medical education has introduced a cost-reimbursement for medical students who do not reach the yearly rising weighted average. Aim: The authors examine the dropout behaviour of Hungarian medical students. Method: Analysis of the Higher Education Information System based on the database of those who started their medical studies in 2010 (n = 1046). Results: Early retardation of credit accumulation, the use of passive semesters are typical for dropouts. 83.6% of those who started their studies studied in state-funded education, with 9.4% dropouts among them, 50% among cost-reimbursement students. Multivariate analysis revealed the factors affecting dropout. Conclusion: The chances of dropping out are increased by the low credit number, the number of passive semesters, the cost-reimbursement financing form. A dormitory residence is safety net, the student can make social capital that can support the success of his studies. Orv Hetil. 2019; 160(21): 829-834.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Migration, drop-out and ageing of physicians are the most important challenges of the 21st century healthcare system. The young doctors' willingness to work abroad will become a decisive issue of the human resources of healthcare in the following decades. AIM: To explore the willingness of migration among medical university students. METHOD: Quantitative and qualitative online survey of students from 4 Hungarian medical universities (n = 530). In the present study we investigated only the 5th- and 6th- year students' answers (n = 165). RESULTS: 40% of students plan to work abroad, mostly for a 2-5 year timeframe. The motivation of working abroad are the following: work conditions of medical system, inadequate pay and general living conditions in Hungary. The content analysis of open answers showed that the willingness to return depends mainly on family reasons and the objective working conditions (infrastructure, pay, abolition of the gratuity system). An equally important factor is the evolution of work culture. CONCLUSIONS: As opposed to previous studies, our results indicate a more prevalent willingness to work abroad while an unambiguous return is only possible with a drastic change in the healthcare system. RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The effectiveness of fertility treatments is influenced by the health care professionals' knowledge regarding infertility as well as their empathy. AIM: The aim of the study was to examine infertility-related knowledge and perceptions of emotional and mind/body consequences of infertility among medical students. METHODS: A questionnaire design was used. Data were obtained from 112 medical university students (76 women, 36 men) who participated involuntary and compensation-free. RESULTS: Medical students' knowledge concerning infertility proved to be incomplete and ambiguous. Subjects underestimated the presence of mind/body and emotional symptoms caused by infertility in men particularly, and overestimated some emotional concerns in women, e.g. sadness. CONCLUSIONS: Medical students have gaps in their subject-specific knowledge, so that they need more (even practical) information regarding infertility during their studies. Students' conceptions about emotional and physical consequences of infertility are distorted by stereotypes. The risk of these biases is that it could make it difficult to perceive patients in a non-distorted way, especially infertile male patients.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Because the level of stress is rather high among medical students, it would be important to prepare them for preventing it. AIM: The aim of the authors was to investigate the perceived stress level of medical students, their psychosomatic symptoms, coping strategies and satisfaction with life. METHOD: Preclinical medical students from the University of Szeged, Hungary (N = 155) participated in the study. Data collection was performed by groups, in self-administered, anonymous and voluntary form. RESULTS: Levels of stress load and satisfaction with life among medical students were similar to previous international and national data. There were no gender differences in the levels of life satisfaction, however, levels of perceived stress and psychosomatic symptoms were higher among girls. Satisfaction with life was primarily related to perceived stress level and the coping methods. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that there are significant interrelationships among in the levels of perceived stress, psychosomatic symptoms and coping styles among in preclinical students. During medical education there is also a need for improving skills, such as coping and stress management.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Effective management and prevention of widespread burnout among medical students in Hungary require thorough understanding of its relations to coping strategies, which lacks sufficient data. AIM: To explore the prevalence of burnout and its relations to coping strategies among medical students. METHOD: Cross-sectional study with 292 participants. Burnout was assessed by the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Student Survey. Coping strategies were evaluated by the Folkman-Lazarus Ways of Coping Questionnaire and questions about health-maintenance behaviours. Associations between burnout and coping strategies were explored with linear regression analyses. RESULTS: The prevalence of high-level burnout was 25-56%. Both problem-focused coping and support-seeking were protective factors of exhaustion and cynicism, however, they predicted reduced personal accomplishment. Emotion-focused coping predicted exhaustion and cynicism and correlated negatively with reduced personal accomplishment. Health-maintenance behaviours were protective factors for exhaustion and predicted reduced personal accomplishment. CONCLUSIONS: Deployment of coping strategies that target the most prevalent burnout dimension may improve effective management of burnout.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Career motivations, professional socialization, as well as somatic and mental health of medical students have received a growing interest. AIM: To explore gender-related differences among medical students in the fields of career motivations, somatic and mental health, and stress factors. METHOD: Nationwide, cross-sectional, quantitative survey on a sample of medical students (n = 731). RESULTS: Female medical students choose their profession earlier, and their career motivations are more altruistic than their male colleagues. The lack of the role model is more typical for females. Female students have more psychosomatic disorders, and complain about more stress factors than males. Workload, sleeping disorders and emotional exhaustion are significantly higher among female medical students. CONCLUSIONS: The results show that health protection of female medical students may have a key role in the prevention of subsequent morbidity of female physicians in Hungary.
