RESUMEN

ObjectiveTo analyze the monitoring results and trends of Oncomelania in Songjiang District of Shanghai from 2007 to 2023, and to provide reference for future monitoring work. MethodsThe data of snail monitoring in Songjiang District from 2007 to 2023 were collected, including the location of snail spots, the number of survey frames, the area with snails, the number of frames with snails, the total number of snails, etc. The density of living snails and the occurrence rate of living snail frames were calculated. ResultsFrom 2007 to 2023, a total of 158 snail spots were found in 22 administrative villages in 4 towns in Songjiang District, including 131 emerging snail habitats (82.91%) and 27 reemerging snail habitats (17.09%). The total snail area was 175 980 m2, the number of snail frames was 10 061, and 33 302 snails were captured. The highest density was 260/0.11 m2, and 15 662 snails were dissected. No positive snails were found. The average density of living snails was 0.60/0.11 m2 and the average occurrence rate of living snail frames was 17.99%. The snail areas in different areas were Yexie Town 126 000 m2 (71.60%), Maogang Town 26 470 m2 (15.04%), Xinbang Town 17 040 m2 (9.68%), and Shihudang Town 6 470 m2 (3.68%). The average density of living snails in different areas was 0.89/0.11 m2 in Yexie Town, 0.65/0.11 m2 in Maogang Town, 0.26/0.11 m2 in Shihudang Town and 0.24/0.11 m2 in Xinbang Town. The snail areas of different snail habitats were as follows: woodland 151 250 m2(85.95%), river 13 810 m2(7.85%), ditch 6 910 m2(3.93%), farmland 4 010 m2(2.28%). The average density of living snails in different snail habitats: ditch 1.01/0.11 m2, beach 0.86/0.11 m2, woodland 0.57/0.11 m2, river 0.40/0.11 m2. The occurrence rate of living snail frames in different regions and different snail environment types showed a downward trend and the difference was statistically significant. ConclusionAlthough the snail monitoring indicators such as snail area, average living snail density and average living snail frame occurrence rate in Songjiang District are still at its historically low level, the average living snail density and average living snail frame occurrence rate are still high compared with other regions or the national average. We should focus on the upper reaches and tributaries of the Huangpu River, especially the key areas of seedling transplantation, and strengthen monitoring and supervision to reduce the risk of snail input.

RESUMEN

Background: Breast ultrasound-guided vacuum-assisted excision (US-VAE) has become a scarless solution for the removal of benign breast lesions. This procedure is now favored by more and more female patients for its satisfactory cosmetic outcome and few postoperative complications. However, controversy have been raised regarding its efficacy and safety in treating larger benign breast lesions. This study aimed to evaluate whether US-VAE is sufficient for the treatment of clinical benign breast lesions larger than 3 cm and to investigate the lesion features that affect the complete excision rate and hematoma occurrence rate. Methods: From January 2018 to July 2021, a total of 1,812 lesions in 1,367 patients underwent US-VAE at the Chinese People's Liberation Army General Hospital. A total of 89 benign breast lesions in 87 patients enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. The baseline clinical characteristics and ultrasonographic features of the lesions were recorded. Patients were followed up by US to record if there are any serious issues and the occurrence of hematoma and the recurrence of the lesions within 3 days and 6-12 months later, then at 1-year intervals. Lesions were classified to analyze the possible factors associated with complete excision rate and hematoma occurrence rate. Results: The mean age was 35.9±9.5 years (range, 18-54 years), and the median maximum size of benign breast lesions was 3.5 cm (range, 3.1-5.0 cm). The complete excision rate was 91.0% (81/89). Histopathology (P=0.002) and vascularity (P=0.032) of lesions showed statistically significant differences in groups with or without recurrent lesions. A total of 17 cases (17/89, 19.1%) presented with hematoma after the procedure. The maximum lesion size in patients with hematoma was significantly larger than that in those without hematoma (P<0.001). Conclusions: US-VAE is an effective and safe alternative method for the treatment of benign breast lesions larger than 3 cm, especially for fibroadenoma, adenosis, hamartoma. For benign phyllodes tumors and intraductal papillomas larger than 3 cm and lesions with hypervascularity, the possibility of recurrence after US-VAE should be noted. The size of lesions needs to be considered when evaluating the occurrence of hematoma after US-VAE.

RESUMEN

Objective @#To explore the imaging characteristics of the mandibular nerve canal in adults to provide a reference for clinical mandibular surgery.@*Methods@# One thousand adult patients in Guiyang Stomatological Hospital from January 2018 to January 2021 were randomly selected. Cone beam CT (CBCT) was used to observe the anterior mandibular canal and other branches, and the incidence of anterior canal in the mandibular ramus area, posterior molar area and molar area and the distance to each point of the mandible were measured.@*Results@#Of the 901 patients (1 802 sides) included in the study, 386 patients (42.84%) found branches of the mandibular canal, and 182 patients (97 males and 85 females) found the Anterograde Canal 20.20% (182/901). In total, 225 mandibles were found to have anterior canals. There were 101 cases of left mandible and 124 cases of right mandible. The forward canal mainly occurred in the molar area, the molar posterior area and the ascending branch area, and the ascending branch area was the best starting point of the forward canal and the molar stopping point (P < 0.05). The average length of the forward canal (L1) was (10.364 ± 3.833) mm, the average height of the forward canal to the main trunk of the mandibular nerve (L2-RRB) was (3.623 ± 2.035) mm, and the average height of the forward canal to the crest of the alveolar ridL3 (l3) was (9.280 ± 3.240) mm.@*Conclusion@#Mandibular nerve canal branches are common, and there were no differences in male, female and lateral distribution. In this study, the incidence of mandibular anterior canal was the highest, and it often occurred in the molar area.

RESUMEN

Objective: To observe and study the resting radial artery pulse wave and the pulse wave changes after a single individualized exercise in young healthy normal subjects. Methods: We selected 16 young healthy graduate students, advanced training doctors, and visiting scholars from Fuwai Hospital without any disease diagnosis and low daily exercise. They first completed the symptom-restricted limit cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). A single individualized exercise with Δ50% power as the exercise intensity was completed within one week after CPET. We measured and recorded 50 s pulse wave data before exercise and 10 min, 20 min, 30min after exercise, let the instrument automatically fix the point and then manually recheck to obtain each pulse wave characteristic point: starting point (B), main wave peak point (P1), trough of a repulse point (PL), crest of a repulse point (P2), and end point (E), and the raw data of the abscissa (time T) and ordinate (amplitude Y) corresponding to each point were derived from the instrument. We treated the end point E of the previous pulse wave as the start point B of the next wave, returned TB to zero, and got the main observation indicators: YB, YP1, YPL, YP2 and TP1, TPL, TP2, TE, and calculated out ΔYP1 (YP1-YB), ΔYPL (YPL-YB), ΔYP2 (YP2-YB), TE-TPL, (TE-TPL)/TPL, pulse rate, S1 (the slope of main wave ascending branch), S2 (the slope of dicrotic ascending branch), ΔYP2-ΔYPL and TP2-TPL as secondary observation indicators; defined the dicrotic wave with obvious crest as YP2>YPL, and calculated the occurrence rate of dicrotic wave with obvious crest (number of waveforms with YP2>YPL in 50 s /total number of waveforms×100%). We analyzed individually the 50 s pulse wave data of each subject before and after exercise, and then averaged all the data for overall analysis. Results: ①16 healthy young subjects (males 10, females 6), age (30.6±6.4, 24~48) years old; height (170.4±8.2, 160~188) cm; body mass (63.9±12.8, 43~87) kg. ②YB (87.2±5.8, 78.1~95.9), YP1 (223.5±15.8, 192.7~242.3), YPL (122.8±7.8, 110.0~133.8), YP2 (131.4±4.9, 116.7~137.5), TP1 (126.2±42.2, 94.2~280.0), TPL (360.2±44.8, 311.5~507.3), TP2 (432.4±50.8, 376.2~589.0), TE (899.7±86.9, 728.3~1042.0). ΔYP1 (136.3±19.9, 96.8~ 158.6), ΔYPL (35.7±10.7, 16.0~55.7), ΔYP2 (44.3±8.1, 22.5~56.5), TE-TPL (539.5±79.3, 405.9~691.3), (TE-TPL)/TPL (1.5±0.3, 0.8~2.0), pulse rate (67.3±6.6, 57.6~82.4), S1 (1.1±0.2, 0.6~1.4), S2 (0.1±0.1, 0.0~0.2), ΔYP2-ΔYPL (8.6±6.1, 0.9 ~19.8), TP2-TPL (72.3±19.9, 38.3~108.4). ③10 min after exercise, YPL (97.0±13.2 vs 122.8±7.8), YP2 (109.6±12.8 vs 131.4±4.9), ΔYPL (6.6±9.8 vs 35.7±10.7), ΔYP2 (19.3±11.2 vs 44.3±8.1), TE (667.8±123.1 vs 899.7±86.9), TE-TPL (330.2±128.4 vs 539.5±79.3), (TE-TPL)/TPL (1.0±0.4 vs 1.5±0.3) decreased, while the pulse rate (92.2± 14.0 vs 67.3±6.6), ΔYP2-ΔYPL (12.7±9.7 vs 8.6±6.1), TP2-TPL (98.0±38.1 vs 72.3±19.9) increased (all P<0.05). The trend of pulse wave changes at 20 min and 30 min after exercise was consistent with that at 10 min after exercise, but from 20 min, most of the indicators gradually recovered to the resting level before exercise. ④The incidence of dicrotic waves with obvious peaks in 16 young healthy persons at rest was 94.5%, and increased at 10 min (96.3%), 20 min (98.5%), and 30 min (99.8%) after exercise (all P<0.01). Among them, the incidence of dicrotic waves with obvious peaks before and after exercise was maintained at about 100% in 10 subjects. The appearance rate of 2 cases had reached 100% before exercise, but it decreased at 10 minutes after exercise, and then continued to increase, at 30 minutes recovered to 100%. Three subjects had a low resting rate and started to increase after exercise. In 1 case, the rate was low only 20 minutes after exercise, considering the influence of human factors. Conclusion: The influence of exercise on the pulse wave of normal people is mainly reflected in the dicrotic wave. On the whole, after a single precise power exercise, the position of the dicrotic wave is reduced, the amplitude is deepened, and the appearance rate of the dicrotic wave with obvious crest is generally increased, and this change can be maintained for at least 30 minutes. From an individual point of view, the response trend of each subject is different.

RESUMEN

Objective: To observe and study the resting radial artery pulse wave and changes after a single individualized exercise in patients with long-term chronic diseases. Methods: We selected 16 patients with chronic disease (disease duration ≥5 years) who have been clearly diagnosed as hypertension and/or diabetes and/or hyperlipemia, and first completed the symptom-restricted limit cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET). Then a single individualized exercise with Δ50% power as the exercise intensity was completed within one week after CPET. We measured and recorded 50s pulse wave data before exercise and 10 min, 20 min, 30 min after exercise, then obtained each pulse wave characteristic point: starting point (B), main wave peak point (P1), trough of a repulse point (PL), crest of a repulse point (P2), and end point (E). The raw data of the abscissa (time T) and ordinate (amplitude Y) corresponding to each point were derived from the instrument. We treated the end point E of the previous pulse wave as the start point B of the next wave, returned TB to zero, and got the main observation indicators: YB, YP1, YPL, YP2 and TP1, TPL, TP2, TE, and calculated out ΔYP1, ΔYPL, ΔYP2, TE-TPL, (TE-TPL)/TPL, pulse rate, S1, S2 ,ΔYP2-ΔYPL and TP2-TPL as secondary observation indicators. Then calculated the occurrence rate of dicrotic wave with obvious crest. Finally we analyzed individually the 50 s pulse wave data of each patient before and after exercise, and then averaged all the data for overall analysis. Results: ①16 patients with long-term chronic diseases (males 14, females 2), ages (53.7±12.6, 28~80) years old, height (171.7±6.6, 155~183) cm, body weight (80.0±13.5, 54~98) kg. 2YB (91.5±10.8, 71.1~108.6), YP1 (203.6±24.7, 162.7~236.3), YPL (127.1±6.2, 118.2~140.3), YP2 (125.9±6.2, 115.7~137.7), TP1 ( 137.2±22.3, 103.0~197.1), TPL (368.7±29.5, 316.3~434.0), TP2 (422.7±32.8, 376.9~494.7), TE (883.4±95.0, 672.2~1003.3), ΔYP1 (112.1±33.8, 60.3~ 157.5), ΔYPL (35.5±14.2, 17.5~66.2), ΔYP2 (34.4±13.3, 20.0~62.9), TE-TPL (514.6±85.4, 341.4~621.9), (TE-TPL)/TPL (1.4±0.2, 1.0~1.7), pulse rate (68.8±8.4, 59.8~89.3), S1 (0.9±0.3, 0.4~1.4), S2 (0.0±0.0, -0.1~0.0), ΔYP2-ΔYPL (-1.2±2.6,- 6.5 ~ 2.5), TP2-TPL (54.0 ± 10.8, 33.6 ~ 81.1). ③10min after exercise, YB, YPL, YP2, TPL, TE decreased, YP1 increased. ΔYPL, TE-TPL, (TE-TPL)/TPL decreased, and ΔYP1, pulse rate, S1, ΔYP2-ΔYPL, TP2 -TPL increased (all P<0.05). The change trend of pulse wave at 20min and 30min after exercise was consistent with that at 10min after exercise, but most indicators gradually recovered to the resting level before exercise from 10 min. ④The appearance rate of dicrotic wave with obvious crest in 16 patients with long-term chronic disease at rest was 28.6%, and the appearance rate of 10 min (65.7%), 20 min (77.1%), 30 min (73.7%) after exercise was significantly increased (all P< 0.01). In 6 patients, the incidence of dicrotic waves with obvious peaks after exercise was significantly increased, and it could continue until 30 minutes. In 3 patients, the incidence increased significantly 10 minutes after exercise, and began to decrease at 20 minutes. In 1 patient, the rate of appearance only started to increase 20 minutes after exercise. In 2 patients, the incidence increased 10 minutes after exercise and then decreased. In 1 patient, the rate of occurrence increased briefly 20 minutes after exercise and then decreased. The incidence of 1 patient dropped after exercise and began to rise at 20 minutes. In 2 cases, the incidence rate did not increase after exercise, and it increased slightly after 30 minutes. Conclusion: In patients with long-term chronic diseases, the radial artery pulse wave is short and the dicrotic wave is not obvious or even disappears. After a single precise power exercise, the main wave increases, the position of the dicrotic wave decreases, and the amplitude increases. The specific response should be analyzed individually.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the application of concept nursing of accelerated rehabilitation surgery in orthopedic postoperative recovery. METHODS: A total of 120 patients who received orthopedic surgery were divided into the control group undergoing routine orthopedic nursing and the observation group undergoing the concept of accelerated rehabilitation surgery nursing. RESULTS: Patients in the observation group had shorter in-bed activity time and out-of-bed activity time, average time of hospital stay, and lower total treatment costs. The incidence of incision infection, respiratory system infection, digestive tract infection, urinary tract infection, deep vein thrombosis, and other complications in the observation group was much lower. The recovery scores of joint function in the observation group at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months after the operation were all better, and the recovery rate of joint function within 1 year after the operation was higher. CONCLUSION: Following the concept of accelerated rehabilitation surgery nursing during the perioperative period can improve the quality of postoperative orthopedic recovery.

RESUMEN

Researchers have shown in laboratory studies that different types of fabrics were associated with changes in skin moisture, friction, shear, and temperature that may predispose patients to pressure injury. There was an association between type of fiber used in hospital linens and pressure injury development in previous clinical studies. We examined if bed linens made from a newly developed synthetic fiber fabric affected occurrence rate, time to development, and severity of unit-acquired pressure injury in critically ill adult inpatients. DESIGN: Cluster randomized controlled trial. SETTING: Five adult medical ICUs within one quaternary care center in the Midwest United States. PATIENTS: Patients were assigned to a unit based on bed availability. In total, there were 3,332 patients in the study. INTERVENTIONS: Participating medical ICUs were randomly assigned to cotton fiber or synthetic fiber linens for the first 6 months of the study period, and assignment reversed after a 14-day washout period for the final 6 months. MEASUREMENTS AND MAIN RESULTS: Unit-acquired pressure injury occurrence rate, time to first unit-acquired pressure injury, and severity were evaluated using generalized mixed effect models with patient as a random effect, and a marginal Cox proportional hazards model with repeated admissions from the same patient accounted for by use of a sandwich estimator of the variance. There were 1,706 patients on cotton fiber linens and 1,626 patients on synthetic fiber linens. Groups were similar on demographics except race and admitting diagnosis groupings. Occurrence rate (p = 0.99), time to development (p = 0.99), and maximum severity of unit-acquired pressure (p = 0.86) were similar between groups before and after controlling for race and admitting diagnosis groupings. CONCLUSIONS: Linen type did not affect unit-acquired pressure injury occurrence rate, severity, or timing. Standard unit-acquired pressure injury prevention efforts may be more cost-effective than investment in synthetic fiber linens.

RESUMEN

Data from the SEER reports reveal that the occurrence rate of a cancer type generally follows a unimodal distribution over age, peaking at an age that is cancer-type specific and ranges from 30+ through 70+. Previous studies attribute such bell-shaped distributions to the reduced proliferative potential in senior years but fail to explain why some cancers have their occurrence peak at 30+ or 40+. We present a computational model to offer a new explanation to such distributions. The model uses two factors to explain the observed age-dependent cancer occurrence rates: cancer risk of an organ and the availability level of the growth signals in circulation needed by a cancer type, with the former increasing and the latter decreasing with age. Regression analyses were conducted of known occurrence rates against such factors for triple negative breast cancer, testicular cancer and cervical cancer; and all achieved highly tight fitting results, which were also consistent with clinical, gene-expression and cancer-drug data. These reveal a fundamentally important relationship: while cancer is driven by endogenous stressors, it requires sufficient levels of exogenous growth signals to happen, hence suggesting the realistic possibility for treating cancer via cleaning out the growth signals in circulation needed by a cancer.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Swallowing disorders (dysphagia) is common in stroke patients. However, the epidemiology of post-stroke dysphagia (PSD) is poorly described. We herein synthesize the data of eligible studies on occurrence rate of dysphagia in Asian populations with stroke. METHODS: We searched the electronic databases (PubMed, Embase and Web of Science) to collect the studies on the prevalence of PSD. We used the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale (NOS) to estimate the quality of studies. The pooled dysphagia occurrence rate was obtained in Asian stroke patients. RESULTS: 40 studies (including 43 observations) from 2318 initial references were selected in the synthetic analysis. The pooled occurrence rate of dysphagia in post-stroke patients was 36.3% (95% CI, 33.3%-39.3%). Meta-regression analysis showed that the "country" and "developing level" may influence the pooled occurrence rate of PSD. CONCLUSION: Dysphagia is common in Asian post-stroke patients. Our meta-analysis may raise concern about evaluating and managing dysphagia in stroke patients.

RESUMEN

The intrauterine device (IUD) has corresponding side effects including reproductive tract infectious diseases, irregular vaginal bleeding, menoxenia, lower abdominal pain, pain in the lumbosacral region and ectopic gestation. A prior study conducted by Bhatia and Cleland reflected that contraceptive usage was one of the factors that influence the occurrence of RTIs in South India. Although many studies have been conducted in various parts of different countries with the aim to document the prevalence of RTIs and its risk factors, there remains a lack of sizable literature for Chinese women who use specific IUDs. Therefore, we conducted an analysis on the relationship of IUD type and processing period with the occurrence rate of RTI.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Ehrlichiosis is an acute febrile tick-borne disease which can rarely be a trigger for secondary hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH). METHODS: We reviewed our experience with Ehrlichia infections at a tertiary-care academic medical center. RESULTS: Over 10 years, 157 cases of ehrlichiosis were identified. Ten patients (6.4%) had infection with E. ewingii, 7(4.5%) of whom were transplant patients as compared to 3(1.9%) non-transplant patients (p = .035). Transplant patients were more likely to have leukopenia and elevated creatinine compared to immunocompetent patients; length of hospital stay and early mortality were not different between the two groups. Ten patients met the HLH-2004 diagnosis criteria, which could be an underestimation of HLH occurrence as most patients were not completely evaluated for these criteria. We calculated the H-Score to find the probability of HLH; 25 patients scored high making the occurrence rate of HLH at least 16%. Ehrlichia-induced HLH patients (N = 25) had more anemia, thrombocytopenia, elevated creatinine and AST. Moreover, they had a significantly longer hospital stay (median 9 days) compared to patients without HLH (median 4 days) (p = .006). CONCLUSIONS: Ehrlichia-induced HLH is a potential serious complication with relatively high occurrence rate; patients manifest severe disease with end-organ damage requiring longer hospital stay.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: A pressure ulcer (PU) steering group was set up in Zhongda Hospital in China to develop a campaign to increase knowledge of PUs, to improve management and reduce incidence. METHOD: Questionnaires were completed by 275 nurses to ascertain their knowledge of PUs. The initial questionnaire indicated that the nurses had insufficient knowledge of PUs. The steering group then ran a campaign focusing on standardising the management of PUs. The measurement of PU knowledge for all nurses was tested after 2 years of training. RESULTS: After 2 years, the nursing staff's knowledge of PUs had improved. Usage of the Braden scale had risen from (60.0±22.9) to (88.0±9.0) and showed a statistically significant difference (p<0.01). Moreover, the rate for patients reported as being at high risk of developing a PU had increased from 0.98% in 2012 to 1.24% in 2013, while the occurrence rate of PUs in the hospital had decreased from 0.09% in 2012 to 0.05% in 2013. CONCLUSION: The campaign significantly enhanced the knowledge of PUs and improved the ability of nursing staff to evaluate PU risks, resulting in a decrease in the occurrence of PUs.

RESUMEN

Objective To understand the influence of meteorological factors on Oncomelania density in natural condition and provide scientific evidence for the control of the spread of schistosomiasis and Oncomelania. Methods Based on the Oncomelania survey data in spring and ground meteorological observation data of Qianjiang from 1990 to 2014, the first-order autoregressive analysis method was used for trend fitting and disassemble, and the correlation between the change rate of Oncomelania density and various meteorological factors in different periods were analyzed. Results The greatest influence of meteorological factors on Oncomelania density was temperature, followed by precipitation. The average minimum temperature in January and from December to February had predominant influence on Oncomelania density and frame occurrence rate of living Oncomelania (FORLO) respectively. The rise (fall) of average minimum temperature in January by 1 ℃ would lead to the increase (decrease) of Oncomelania density by 5.080%-6.710%;The rise (fall) of average minimum temperature from December to February by 1 ℃ would lead to the increase (decrease) of FORLO by 15.521%-15.928%.The period with the biggest influence of precipitation on Oncomelania density was from November to April, as the rainfall declined >20%, drought might occur, which would cause the reduction of Oncomelania density.Sunshine from September to November had some correlations with the change of Oncomelania density and FORLO.Statistical regression models for the change of Oncomelania density, FORLO and meteorological factors based on correlation analysis were established respectively. Conclusion Weed removal in Oncomelania areas before December is beneficial to reduce the surface temperature and soil moisture content, which would result in Oncomelania density reduction in some extent. It' s notable that the winter temperature is in rise in Hubei province along with global climate change, causing the Oncomelania density to increase, to which more attention should be paid.

RESUMEN

Objective To investigate prevalence of long-term mental disorders following traumatic brain injury (TBI) in 4 ~ 13 years. Methods Of the 4287 patients with traumatic brain injury by systematic sampling.675 subjects were screened by the manual of the psychiatric consequences following traumatic brain injury. The final diagnoses of mental disorders were determined by two advanced psychiatrists based on CCMD-3 on the criteria of organic mental disorders. Results ① Of the 675 subjects with traumatic brain injury,206 had satisfied diagnosed criteria of one or more organic mental disorder syndromes by CCMD-3, and with dementia 17.48% , amnestic syndrome 1. 04% , personality or behaviour change 13. 84% , psychotic syndrome 1. 19% , depressive syndrome 7.41% ,manic syndrome 0.30% ,hysteric syndrome 0.98% , neurotic syndrome 10. 22%. ②The incidence of the mental disorders in the subjects with severe TBI was significantly higher than that of moderate and mild TBI,separately 66.01% (134/203) ,18.04% (46/255) and 11.98% (26/217 ),λ2 =109.03 and 129.82 separately(P< 0.01). ③The incidence of the personality or behaviour change in male was significantly higher than that of female, separately 15.31% and 6.98% (λ2 =5.65, P<0.05). The incidence of the neurotic syndrome in female was significantly higher than that of male, separately 15. 12% and 8. 55% (λ2 = 6. 02, P < 0.05). Conclusion The high incidence of the mental disorders in the patients with TBI should not neglect. There are more high occurrence rate with more severe degree of brain injuries.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: We carried out this study to determine if there is any difference in the occurrence rate of the epileptiform discharge between awake EEG and sleep EEG and if there are any factors influencing on the occurrence rate of EEG. METHODS: This study included 178 epileptic children who had visited neurology clinic of the department of pediatrics, Pusan National University Hospital from July 2005 to July 2006. The medical and EEG records of these children who had had both awake EEG and sleep EEG were reviewed. We analysed the occurrence rate of the epileptiform discharge between awake EEG and sleep EEG. We investigated the related clinical factors which included sex, seizure types, underlying causes, age at first seizure, antiepileptic drug (AED) medication, age at recording, and background activity. RESULTS: Among 178 epileptic children, 91 patients (51.1%) showed epileptiform discharge in awake or sleep states, 10 patients (11.0%) abnormal only in awake, 40 patients (44.0%) abnormal only in sleep, 41 patients (45.0%) abnormal in both awake EEG and sleep EEG. The occurrence rate of sleep EEG was 81 of 178 patients (45.5%) which was more than that of the awake EEG (28.7%) (P<0.001). The occurrence rate of sleep EEG is more than that of the awake EEG regardless of sex and underlying causes. But there is no significant difference from awake EEG and sleep EEG in finding the epileptiform discharge in the patient with generalized seizure, younger than 5 years old at first seizure, younger than 10 years old at recording, no antiepileptic medication, and abnormal background activity. CONCLUSION: The sleep EEG is thought to be more helpful in the diagnosis of childhood epilepsy.
