Forage low in nonstructural carbohydrates (NSC) is recommended for insulin dysregulated (ID) horses, indicating the importance of an accurate forage analysis. However, it remains to be fully understood how handling forage samples pre-analysis impacts nutrient values. The objective of this study was to compare the effect of fresh-forage storage-handling methods: microwave-oven (MO; 9kw; 70s then stored at -20℃), room temperature (20℃), 3℃, -20℃, and -80℃. Subsamples collected from a mixed-grass pasture and a ryegrass plot were analyzed for crude protein (CP), water soluble carbohydrates (WSC), ethanol soluble carbohydrates (ESC), starch and NSC (starch and WSC). Forage samples were stored for two different time periods (24h vs 1wk) prior to being shipped on ice to a commercial laboratory for wet chemistry (WC) and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIR) analysis. Mixed grass stored at RT showed a reduction in WSC (P=0.009), ESC (P=0.001) and NSC (P=0.006) from 24h to 1wk. Similarly, ESC and starch of the ryegrass and CP of mixed grass decreased after 1wk, but only when stored at -80℃ (P=0.007; P=0.001; P=0.02). Additionally, over time, CP of ryegrass and ESC of mixed grass became higher when stored at -20℃ and MO, respectively (P=0.02; P=0.03). From this study, in order to limit metabolic changes and provide accurate nutrient composition results, practically fresh forage that cannot be quickly analyzed should be transported on ice post collection to a storage location then immediately refrigerated where it can be kept up to one week prior to being shipped on ice for analysis.

Guizotia abyssinica is currently being used for soil improvement; however, owing to its rapid growth and high productivity, it may have value as feed for ruminants, although this has not been well studied. Thus, this research aimed to evaluate the silage quality of Guizotia abyssinica grown during the short season (July-October) as a catch crop in northern Europe when harvested 58, 68, and 90 days after sowing (DAS) over two production years. Ensiled material was analyzed to compare silage quality for the three different DAS. Two factors were analyzed factorially in the experiment: the silage preparation year (2018 or 2019) and the form of the ensiled material (fresh or wilted). We used 36 replications, 18 for each variant of the experimental factor. Harvesting at 58 DAS resulted in unsatisfactory forage fermentability, even after wilting. At 68 DAS, silage quality was satisfactory, but the dry matter content before ensiling was below 20% for both fresh and wilted forage, indicating limitations for silage use without additional wilting for that DAS harvest time. Dry matter content and water-soluble carbohydrates consistently increased as harvest was delayed. Thus, the highest silage quality was obtained from forage harvested 90 DAS regardless of differences in dry matter content. Therefore, it is possible to prepare silage at lower temperatures when the wilting process is limited by environmental conditions.

Black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) have garnered considerable attention for their efficacy in mitigating waste management challenges. However, their potential in treating antibiotics contaminated chicken manure remains uncertain. This study investigates the physicochemical properties changes and nutrient dynamics during the composting of contaminated-chicken manure using BSFL. The results indicate that BSFL treatment reduces electrical conductivity (by 6.01-58.09 %), organic matter, and dissolved organic carbon content in chicken manure throughout the composting process, while maintaining a more stable pH value (pH âˆ¼ 6.0-8.0). This is attributed to the consumption of organic matter by BSFL and the subsequent promotion of organic acid formation. Additionally, BSFL treatment improves the degree of aromatization of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in chicken manure and increases the proportions of fulvic acid (up to 48.77 %) and humic acid (maximally 14.27 %) within the DOM. The germination index and pot experiments indicated improved compost maturity and plant growth in BSFL-treated composts. Furthermore, BSFL meal demonstrated high protein and essential fatty acid content, highlighting its potential as a protein supplement in animal feed. This study underscores the efficacy of BSFL in enhancing compost quality and nutrient availability, offering a sustainable solution for waste management and animal feed production.

BACKGROUND: Dietary risk factors are the leading cause of death globally and in New Zealand (NZ). Processed packaged foods are prevalent in the food supply and contribute excess amounts of sodium, saturated fat, and sugar in diets. Improving the nutritional quality of these foods has the potential to reduce population chronic disease risk. We aimed to evaluate the healthiness using the Australasian Health Star Rating (HSR, from 0.5 to 5 stars, with 5 being the healthiest) and nutrient composition (sodium, saturated fat, and total sugar) of packaged products manufactured by the largest NZ-based food and beverage companies in NZ 2015-2019. This analysis relates to a larger study evaluating structured engagement with food companies to improve nutrition-related policies and actions. METHODS: Data was sourced from Nutritrack, a NZ-branded supermarket-sourced food composition database. The largest NZ-based companies from annual retail sales revenue (n = 35) were identified using 2019 Euromonitor data. All relevant products of the selected companies were extracted for analysis. Products included totalled 17,795 with a yearly range of 3462-3672 products. The primary outcome was a nutrient profile score estimated using HSR. Healthiness was defined as ≥ 3.5 stars. Secondary outcomes were sodium, total sugar, and saturated fat per 100 g/100 mL. All outcomes were assessed overall, by food company, and food category. Change over time was tested using linear mixed models, adjusting for major food categories and cluster effects of food companies controlling for multiple comparisons. Model-adjusted mean differences between years were estimated with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS: There was a small statistically significant increase in mean HSR between 2015 and 2019 (0.08 [0.15,0.01], p = 0.024). Mean total sugar content decreased over the same period (0.78 g/100 g [0.08,1.47], p = 0.020), but there were no significant changes in mean sodium or saturated fat contents. Seven of the 13 categories showed small increases in mean HSR (0.1-0.2). Most categories (9/13) exhibited a reduction in mean total sugar content. CONCLUSIONS: Between 2015 and 2019, there were slight improvements in the nutritional quality of selected packaged foods and drinks in NZ. Much more substantive changes are needed to address the health-related burden of unhealthy diets, supported by stronger government action and less reliance on voluntary industry initiatives.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the nutritional content of edible medicinal materials in mountainous areas of Guizhou Province and compare the comprehensive nutritional value of different varieties. METHODS: A total of 15 kinds of edible herbs were collected from Guizhou Province. According to the national standard, direct drying method, Kjeldahl nitrogen determination method, Soxhlet extraction method, high performance liquid chromatography, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and other detection method were used to determine the content of general nutrients, fat soluble vitamins, minerals and ash. According to the weight ranking of nutritional indexes in principal component analysis and membership function analysis, the quality of 9 kinds of food and drug substances and 6 kinds of Chinese medicinal materials were evaluated and ranked. RESULTS: The eigenvalues of the first 4 principal components were greater than 1, and the cumulative contribution rate was 82.32%. Compared with membership function analysis, the top 5 in comprehensive evaluation were Eucommia, Epimedium and honeysuckle, all of which were food and drug substances. The contents of calcium(851.69 mg/100 g), phosphorus(270.22 mg/100 g) and potassium(1446.48 mg/100 g) were the highest. The contents of carotene(21 963.87 µg/100 g) and vitamin E(57.82 mg/100 g) were the highest in the fat-soluble vitamins of Herbimedium. The contents of various indexes of honeysuckle were relatively high. CONCLUSION: Food and pharmaceutical substances have both medicinal value and nutritional value, and the overall nutritional benefit is higher than that of Chinese medicinal materials.

The objective of this study was to investigate the nutrient composition of low-grade New Zealand commercial fish (Gemfish and Hoki) roe and to investigate the effects of delipidation and freeze-drying processes on roe hydrolysis and antioxidant activities of their protein hydrolysates. Enzymatic hydrolysis of the Hoki and Gemfish roe homogenates was carried out using three commercial proteases: Alcalase, bacterial protease HT, and fungal protease FP-II. The protein and lipid contents of Gemfish and Hoki roes were 23.8% and 7.6%; and 17.9% and 10.1%, respectively. The lipid fraction consisted mainly of monounsaturated fatty acid (MUFA) in both Gemfish roe (41.5%) and Hoki roe (40.2%), and docosahexaenoic (DHA) was the dominant polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) in Gemfish roe (21.4%) and Hoki roe (18.6%). Phosphatidylcholine was the main phospholipid in Gemfish roe (34.6%) and Hoki roe (28.7%). Alcalase achieved the most extensive hydrolysis, and its hydrolysate displayed the highest 2,2-dipheny1-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH)˙ and 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical scavenging activities and ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP). The combination of defatting and freeze-drying treatments reduced DPPH˙ scavenging activity (by 38%), ABTS˙ scavenging activity (by 40%) and ferric (Fe3+) reducing power by18% (p < 0.05). These findings indicate that pre-processing treatments of delipidation and freeze-drying could negatively impact the effectiveness of enzymatic hydrolysis in extracting valuable compounds from low grade roe.

Nutrient quality of plant-based meat and fish alternative (MFA) products has been reported as variable. The present objective was to compare the nutrient density of raw meat and fish with MFA products and to examine MFA ingredients and fortification patterns. Nutrient composition data for raw beef, pork, and chicken (n = 450) came from the USDA Standard Reference Legacy Reselase (SR28) nutrient composition database (n = 450). Data for plant-based meat alternatives (n = 118) came from the USDA Branded Food Products Database (BFPDB). Data for fish and seafood (n = 68) and alternatives (n = 12) came from the Danish Frida Database and Mintel (n = 503). Analyses compared macronutrient content and selected micronutrients per 100 g and percentage of US Daily Values. Nutrient density scores were based on the NRF5.3 algorithm. NRF5.3 scores were significantly lower for MFA products as compared to meat or fish. Saturated fat content was lower, but the mean MFA sodium content was 660 mg/100 g compared to 60 mg/100 g for beef. Mean protein content (17 g) was lower than for beef and pork (20 g). A search of ingredient lists found that fortification with most nutrients associated with animal source proteins (such as B vitamins, vitamin D, iodine, zinc, and omega-3 EPA and DHA) was minimal. Plant-based MFA products would benefit from nutrient standards and fortification guidelines to ensure that these products are not nutritionally inferior to the originals.

This study investigated the impact of variety and harvest time on the visual appearance, nutritional quality, and functional active substances of six lotus root cultivars: "Xinsanwu", "Wuzhi No. 2", "Baiyuzhan", "Huaqilian", "Elian No. 6", and "Elian No. 5". Samples were collected monthly from December 2023 to April 2024. A nutrient analysis revealed a decrease in the water content with a delayed harvest. The total soluble solids and soluble sugar content peaked towards the end and middle-to-late harvest periods, respectively. Starch levels initially increased before declining, while the soluble protein exhibited a triphasic trend with an initial rise, a dip, and a final increase. The vitamin C (Vc) content varied across cultivars. Functional active substances displayed dynamic changes. The total phenolics initially decreased, then increased, before ultimately declining again. The total flavonoid content varied by both cultivar and harvest time. The phenolic acid and flavonoid content mirrored the trends observed for total phenolics and total flavonoids. Gastrodin was the most abundant non-flavonoid compound across all varieties. "Wuzhi No. 2" and "Baiyuzhan" displayed higher levels of functional active substances and starch, while the Elian series and "Xinsanwu" cultivar exhibited a greater content of Vc, soluble sugar, and soluble protein. Specific harvest periods yielded optimal results: "Wuzhi No. 2" (H1 and H5), "Huaqilian" (H2), and "Baiyuzhan" (H3 and H4) demonstrated a high nutrient and functional active substance content. Overall, the lotus roots harvested in period H4 achieved the highest score. Overall, this study provides the foothold for the rapid identification of superior lotus root cultivars and the valorization of lotus root by-products via advanced processing methods. Additionally, it offers valuable insights for market participants and consumers to select optimal varieties and harvest times based on their specific needs.

Laiwu black goats comprise an excellent local germplasm resource; however, a shortage of feed resources has led to the application of unconventional feed. Ginger straw feed has good physiological effects, but research on this feed source for ruminant animals is lacking. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of enzymatic silage ginger straw on Laiwu black goat performance. The experiment used an independent sample t-test analysis method; 24 healthy Laiwu black goats with a body weight of 20.05 ± 1.15 kg and age of 5.67 ± 0.25 months were randomly divided into two groups with three replicates (bars) per group and four goats per replicate. The experimental diet was composed of mixed concentrate, silage, and garlic peel at a 2:7:1 ratio. The silage used in the two groups was whole corn silage (CON group) and 60% whole corn silage plus 40% enzymatic silage ginger straw (SG group), and the other components were identical. Daily feed intake/daily gain (F/G) was significantly higher in the SG group than in the CON group (p < 0.05), but there were no significant differences in dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) digestibility between the groups. The shear force, cooking loss, centrifugal loss, and pressure loss of the longissimus dorsi muscle group were significantly lower in the SG than in the CON group (p < 0.05). Compared with those in the CON group, the serum and liver total antioxidant capacity was significantly increased in the SG group, and in the liver, the O2·-, malondialdehyde, and OH· contents were significantly decreased. Collectively, the rumen fluid microbial diversity was changed in the SG group. It was concluded that enzymatic silage ginger straw usage instead of 40% whole silage corn as feed for Laiwu black goats can significantly improve the muscle quality, antioxidant capacity, and intestinal flora, with no adverse effects on production performance. In conclusion, our study provides a basis for ginger straw processing and storage and its rational application in the Laiwu black goat diet.

The use of microorganisms to manage aflatoxin contamination is a gentle and effective approach. The aim of this study was to test the removal of AFB1 from AFB1-contaminated peanut meal by a strain of Meyerozyma guilliermondii AF01 screened by the authors and to optimize the conditions of the biocontrol. A regression model with the removal ratio of AFB1 as the response value was established by means of single-factor and response surface experiments. It was determined that the optimal conditions for the removal of AFB1 from peanut meal by AF01 were 75 h at 29 °C under the natural pH, with an inoculum of 5.5%; the removal ratio of AFB1 reached 69.31%. The results of simulating solid-state fermentation in production using shallow pans and fermentation bags showed that the removal ratio of AFB1 was 68.85% and 70.31% in the scaled-up experiments, respectively. This indicated that AF01 had strong adaptability to the environment with facultative anaerobic fermentation detoxification ability. The removal ratio of AFB1 showed a positive correlation with the growth of AF01, and there were no significant changes in the appearance and quality of the peanut meal after fermentation. This indicated that AF01 had the potential to be used in practical production.

A 90-day feeding trial with 25 yearling Horro lambs (22.6 ± 1.8 kg) was conducted from November 2022 to January 2023. The trial was designed to see how supplementing forage varieties of Cajanus cajan (Degagsa and Belabas) and Lablab purpureus (Beresa-55 and Gebis-17) affected the growth performance, feed intake and digestibility of Horro lambs fed a basal diet of fodder oat hay compared to conventional protein supplements. Five experimental sheep per treatment were arranged in a Randomized Complete Blocked Design to receive dietary treatments formulated on an iso-nitrogenous basis which was targeted to provide crude protein (CP) of 64.37 g/h/day. Data were taken on weight gain, feed conversion ratio, feed intake and refusal, and in-vivo digestibility features. All lambs were fed ad-libitum fodder oat hay containing 91.5 % Dry matter, 7.8 % ash, 6.4 % crude protein, 60 % neutral detergent fiber, 42.8 % acid detergent fiber, 13.4 % acid detergent lignin and 65 % in-vitro organic matter digestibility. The dietary treatments were fodder oat hay plus 280.8 g Gebis-17 variety (T1), 274.4 g Beresa-55 variety (T2), 320.9 g Belabas variety (T3), 329.3 g Degagsa variety (T4) and 300 g concentrate mixture (T5). The total dry matter intake (DMI) was higher in T3 and T4 than in the other treatment groups. Except for CP, nutritional consumption differed significantly across treatments. T3 and T4 had higher fiber intakes than the other treatments, while T2 had higher ash intakes and T5 had higher metabolizable energy intakes. Even though there was no significant variation in final body weight, lambs in T5 and T1 showed the greatest weight change and average daily gain. Although the diet in T5 induced the lamb performance in a manner comparable to that of the other dietary supplements, its inaccessibility and high cost would limit the use of such supplements by smallholder farmers. Thus, depending on their availability, either Lablab purpurues or Cajanus cajan varieties could be employed as feed supplements in the lambs` diet.

Probiotic fermentation studies are vital in many areas, particularly when it comes to feeding applications. This work examines probiotic fermentation in oil tea crops. The assessment of tea saponin-degrading bacteria and optimization of fermentation conditions using fermented oil tea cake under natural conditions, screening out six strains with strong ability to degrade tea saponin; selection of the best tea saponin degradation strain L.2 and recognition of its morphological features and ITS sequence to obtain L.2 strain is Aspergillus Niger. Oil tea is rich in tea saponin. Aspergillus Niger degraded tea saponins in oil teacakes at a rate of 93.96 % under the ideal conditions of 31.3 oC, 103.5 h, and 4.57 mL of initial acid addition. This has been accomplished via solid-state fermentation of L.2 using single factor studies and surface response optimization experiments. Moreover, Aspergillus Niger degraded tea saponins in oil tea cakes at a rate of 93.96% at the ideal circumstances of 31.3 C, 103.5 h, and 4.57 mL of initial acid addition.

This study aimed to elucidate the influence of various culture medium components, including carbon sources, nitrogen sources, inorganic salts, suspension agents, and temperature, on the mycelial growth characteristics of Phallus dongsun. Employing single-factor experiments and response surface methodology within glass Petri dishes, the research identified that carrot powder, soybean powder, and ZnSO4 notably enhanced the proliferation of aerial mycelium, significantly augmenting the growth rate of P. dongsun mycelium. The resultant mycelium was observed to be dense, robust, and fluffy in texture. In particular, ZnSO4 markedly accelerated the mycelium growth rate. Furthermore, xanthan gum was found to effectively modulate the medium's viscosity, ensuring a stable suspension and facilitating nutrient equilibrium. The optimal cultivation temperature was determined to be 25°C, with mycelial growth ceasing below 5°C and mycelium perishing at temperatures exceeding 35°C. The optimal medium composition was established as follows: wheat starch 5 g/l, carrot powder 5 g/l, soybean powder 7.50 g/l, glucose 10 g/l, ZnSO4 0.71 g/l, NH4Cl 0.68 g/l, xanthan gum 0.5 g/l, and agar 20 g/l. Under these optimized conditions, the mycelium of P. dongsun exhibited a rapid growth rate (1.04 ± 0.14 mm/day), characterized by a thick, dense, and well-developed structure. This investigation provides a theoretical foundation for the conservation, strain selection, and breeding of P. dongsun.

Lycium barbarum L., commonly known as wolfberry, is not only a traditional Chinese medicine but also a highly nutritious food. Its main nutrients include L. barbarum polysaccharide, flavonoid polyphenols, carotenoids, alkaloids, and other compounds, demonstrating its wide application value. This study investigated the effects of nitrogen application on the accumulation of the main nutrients and metabolites in wolfberry fruits under three different nitrogen application rates, namely, N1 (20% nitrogen (N) reduction, 540 kg·ha-2), N2 (medium N, 675 kg·ha-2), and N3 (20% nitrogen increase, 810 kg·ha-2,which is a local conventional nitrogen application amount.). Additionally, due to continuous branching, blossoming, and fruiting of wolfberry plants during the annual growth period, this research also explored the variation in nutritional composition among different harvesting batches. The contents of total sugar and polysaccharide in wolfberry fruit were determined by Fehling reagent method and phenol-sulfuric acid method, respectively;The content of betaine in fruit was determined by high-performance liquid chromatography,and the flavonoids and carotene in the wolfberry fruits were determined by spectrophotometry. Analysis of data over three consecutive years revealed that as nitrogen application increased, the total sugar content in wolfberry fruits initially decreased and then increased. The levels of L. barbarum polysaccharides, total flavonoids, and total carotenoids initially increased and then decreased, while the betaine content consistently increased. Different picking batches significantly impacted the nutrient content of wolfberry fruits. Generally, the first batch of summer wolfberry fruits had greater amounts of total sugar and flavonoids, whereas other nutrients peaked in the third batch. By employing a broadly targeted metabolomics approach, 926 different metabolites were identified. The top 20 differentially abundant metabolites were selected for heatmap generation, revealing that the contents of L-citrulline, 2-methylglutaric acid, and adipic acid increased proportionally to the nitrogen gradient. Conversely, the dibutyl phthalate and 2, 4-dihydroxyquinoline contents significantly decreased under high-nitrogen conditions. The remaining 15 differentially abundant metabolites, kaempferol-3-O-sophorosid-7-O-rhamnoside, trigonelline, and isorhamnosid-3-O-sophoroside, initially increased and then decreased with increasing nitrogen levels. Isofraxidin, a common differentially abundant metabolite across all treatments, is a coumarin that may serve as a potential biomarker for wolfberry fruit response to nitrogen. Differentially abundant metabolites were analyzed for GO pathway involvement, revealing significant enrichment in metabolic pathways and biosynthesis of secondary metabolites under different nitrogen treatments. In conclusion, a nitrogen application of 675 kg·ha-2, 20% less than the local farmers' actual application, was most beneficial for the quality of four-year-old Ningqi 7 wolfberry fruits. Consumers who purchase wolfberry-dried fruit for health benefits should not consider only the first batch of summer wolfberry fruits. These results offer a broader perspective for enhancing the quality and efficiency of the wolfberry industry.

This study aimed to elucidate the impact of ultrasound-assisted cellulase (UC) pretreatment on nutrients, phytic acid, and the bioavailability of phenolics during brown rice sprouting. It sought to unveil the underlying mechanisms by quantifying the activity of key enzymes implicated in these processes. The sprouted brown rice (SBR) surface structure was harmed by the UC pretreatment, which also increased the amount of γ-oryzanol and antioxidant activity in the SBR. Concurrently, the UC pretreatment boosted the activity of phytase, glutamate decarboxylase, succinate semialdehyde dehydrogenase, Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) transaminase, chalcone isomerase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase, thereby decreasing the phytic acid content and increasing the GABA, flavonoid, and phenolic content in SBR. In addition, UC-pretreated SBR showed increased phenolic release and bioaccessibility during in vitro digestion when compared to the treated group. These findings might offer theoretical direction for using SBR to maximize value.

Social wasps exhibit a unique nutritional cycle in which adults feed larvae with prey, and larvae provide adults with larval secretions (LS). LS serves as a vital nutritional source for adults, contributing to the colony's health and reproductive success. The LS nutrient composition has been previously reported in various wasp species, yet these analyses focused solely on worker-destined larvae, overlooking the potential caste designation effects on LS composition. Using metabolomics techniques, we analysed and compared the metabolite and nutrient composition in LS of queen- and worker-destined larvae of the Oriental hornet. We found that queen-destined LS (QLS) contain greater amounts of most metabolites, including amino acids, and smaller amounts of sugars compared to worker-destined LS (WLS). The amino acid-to-sugar ratio in QLS was approximately tenfold higher than in WLS. Thus, as the colony transitions from the production of workers to the production of reproductives, it gradually experiences a nutritional shift that may influence the behaviour and physiology of the adult nest population. This caste-specific metabolite profile and nutrient composition of LS reflect the differences in the diet and physiological requirements of worker- and queen-destined larvae and may play a critical role in caste determination in social wasps.

The composition of culture substrate is an important environmental factor that affects the growth and metabolism of Hypsizygus marmoreus, and sawdust is commonly used as the substrate for cultivating mushrooms. However, the influences of sawdust on metabolic level of H. marmoreus in mycelial growth is little reported. In this study, the effect of sawdust addition on mycelial growth rate, morphological characteristics and nutrient content of H. marmoreus was explored, and the metabolic response was analyzed based on LC-MS/MS. The results showed the mycelial growth rates and the number of mycelial clamp connections in sawdust medium A and sawdust medium B were significantly higher than that of the basic medium (Control). The mycelial morphology in sawdust medium A was denser, with higher edge trimness and stronger aerial mycelia. The contents of crude fiber, crude protein and polysaccharide of the mycelia from sawdust medium A increased by 85.15%, 90.65% and 92.61%, respectively, compared to that in the basic medium. A total of 551 metabolites were identified and obtained. The differential accumulated metabolites (DAMs) were mainly amino acids, lipids compounds and carbohydrates. It was speculated that the addition of sawdust played a vital role in promoting the cell division and, thus, the formation of clamp connections in H. marmoreus mycelia. Regarding amino acids, the metabolism of glycine, serine and ABC transporters was active with the increase in sawdust, thereby increasing the protein content. And some valuable bioactive molecules were found, such as docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This study will lay the foundation for further research on the substance transformation and quality improvement of cultivation substrate for mushrooms.

The red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus), a globally significant marine aquaculture species, boasts formidable osmoregulatory capabilities and remarkable adaptability to low salinity, making it an ideal candidate for commercial cultivation in inland low salinity saline-alkaline waters. However, studies on the fundamental nutritional composition and flavor quality of S. ocellatus in these inland low salinity saline-alkaline waters remain unreported. This study delves into the impact of inland low salinity saline-alkaline environments on the basic nutritional components and nonvolatile flavor substances (including free amino acids and free nucleotides) in the muscle tissue of S. ocellatus. The findings reveal that redfish cultivated in these conditions exhibit a significant increase in the crude fat, ash, and protein content in their dorsal muscle tissue, coupled with a decrease in moisture content (p < 0.05), indicating an enhancement in the nutritional value of the dorsal muscle tissue. Furthermore, this cultivation environment significantly elevates the content of free amino acids in the muscle tissue (p < 0.05), particularly those contributing to umami and sweet tastes, while reducing the relative content of bitter amino acids. Although the total content of free nucleotides decreased, the equivalent umami concentration (EUC) in the muscle tissue markedly increased (p < 0.05) due to the synergistic effect of umami amino acids and flavor nucleotides, enhancing the umami taste characteristics. Therefore, inland low salinity saline-alkaline aquaculture not only elevates the nutritional value of S. ocellatus muscle tissue but also improves its umami flavor characteristics. This discovery opens new perspectives for further research into the impact of inland low salinity saline-alkaline environments on the flavor properties of marine animals.

The dung microbiome is a complex system that is highly influenced by species and diet. This study characterized the dung bacterial and fungal communities of five herbivore species inhabiting the National Park Zuid-Kennemerland, the Netherlands. The five selected herbivore species were rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus L.), cow (Bos taurus L.), horse (Equus ferus caballus L.), fallow deer (Dama dama L.), and European bison (Bison bonasus L.). We explored the effects of distinct digestive physiology (ruminants vs. non-ruminants) and diverse dietary preferences on the microbial community composition of herbivore dung. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were dominant bacterial phyla in the dung of all five herbivore species, and Ascomycota was the predominant fungal phylum. Verrucomicrobiota and Mucoromycota were more present in horse dung and Proteobacteria were more abundant in rabbit dung than the three ruminant dung types. There were few significant differences in the microbial community structure among the three ruminant dung types. The alpha and beta diversity of dung microbial communities significantly differed between ruminants and non-ruminants, especially in bacterial communities. Based on MetaCyc pathways, we found that the primary functions of bacteria in herbivore dung were focused on biosynthesis, various super pathways, and degradation, with a few differences between ruminant and non-ruminant dung. FUNGuild analysis showed that horse dung had more saprotrophic fungi, while the fungi in fallow deer dung had more symbiotrophic properties, with the fungal functions of bison, cow, and rabbit dung somewhere in between. There was also a correlation between microbial community and nutrient composition of the substrate in herbivore dung. Understanding the dung microbial community composition of these herbivore species can enrich the database of mammalian gut microbiomes for studying the mechanisms of microbial community variation while preparing for exploring a new perspective to study the impact of herbivores on ecosystems through dung deposition.

Lycium chinense, a type of medicinal and edible plant, is rich in bioactive compounds beneficial to human health. In order to meet the market requirements for the yield and quality of L. chinense, polyploid induction is usually an effective way to increase plant biomass and improve the content of bioactive components. This study established the most effective tetraploid induction protocol by assessing various preculture durations, colchicine concentrations, and exposure times. The peak tetraploid induction efficacy, 18.2%, was achieved with a 12-day preculture and 24-h exposure to 50 mg L-1 colchicine. Compared to diploids, tetraploids exhibited potentially advantageous characteristics such as larger leaves, more robust stems, and faster growth rates. Physiologically, tetraploids demonstrated increased stomatal size and chloroplast count in stomata but reduced stomatal density. Nutrient analysis revealed a substantial increase in polysaccharides, calcium, iron, and zinc in tetraploid leaves. In addition, seventeen carotenoids were identified in the leaves of L. chinense. Compared to the diploid, lutein, ß-carotene, neoxanthin, violaxanthin, and (E/Z)-phytoene exhibited higher levels in tetraploid strains T39 and T1, with T39 demonstrating a greater accumulation than T1. The findings suggest that the generated tetraploids harbor potential for further exploitation and lay the foundation for the selection and breeding of novel genetic resources of Lycium.
