OBJECTIVE: Given the lack of specific evaluation indices, it is difficult to determine whether to transpose or abandon remnant ears in lobule-type microtia reconstruction. The authors illuminate referable parameters beneficial for proper treatment of remnant ear in an efficient manner. METHODS: A series of 359 lobule-type microtia patients underwent autogenous costal cartilage auricular reconstruction between 2016 and 2021. Fourteen measuring points and defined distances as well as six ratios of specific distances based on position, plumpness, similarity and the width-to-length ratio of the remnant ear have been described, and relevant tactics for appropriate treatments are introduced. RESULTS: Definite morphometric results contribute to attaining satisfactory contours of reconstructed auricles with harmonious earlobes, which exhibit highly similar dimensions and appearances compared to the contralateral normal ears. CONCLUSION: With the help of the proposed locating points and measuring approaches, the procedure of remnant ear treatment is systematically clarified. This technique ensures operation safety and contributes to the aesthetic contour of the auricle. LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: IV Laryngoscope, 134:2741-2747, 2024.

Background: There are no definitive anatomic morphometric risk factors for adolescent anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury. Purpose: To compare the parameters used to define the tibial and femoral morphometric structure of the knee between adolescent patients with and without ACL rupture. Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: Included were magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and radiographs of 115 patients aged 10 to 17 years who were evaluated for ACL rupture at a single institution between February 1, 2019, and January 31, 2022. Images from 115 patients with intact MRI scans were included as controls. We investigated the following imaging parameters: tibial slope (on lateral radiograph), lateral condylar height, tibial sulcus height, medial condylar height, condylar width, intercondylar notch with, intercondylar notch angle, notch index, eminence width, tibial plateau width, eminence width/tibial plateau width, medial/lateral/overall eminence height, medial plateau depth, and 2 different eminence angles. Parameters were compared between groups using the chi-square, Fisher exact, Student t, or Mann-Whitney U test, as appropriate. Receiver operating characteristic analysis was conducted for cutoff values of significant parameters. Results: There were no significant differences in age, sex, or side affected between groups. Only the medial plateau depth was found to be statistically significant between the ACL rupture and ACL intact groups (2.6 vs 2.2 mm; P = .015). A statistically significant cutoff value could not be obtained for the medial plateau depth. Conclusion: Medial plateau depth was found to be significantly greater in adolescent patients with ACL rupture compared with ACL-intact controls.

OBJECTIVE: The aim: To study structural disorders of the liver depending on the duration of subhepatic cholestasis in patients of different age groups. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: 50 obstructive jaundice patients were subdivided into two groups. Group I (n = 25) consisted of young (18-44-year-old) and middle-aged patients (45-59-year-old), while the Group II (n = 25) included elderly (60-74-year-old) and senile patients (75-90-year-old). RESULTS: Results: We performed morphological and morphometric studies of 50 liver biopsy specimens taken from patients of different age groups with different duration of obstructive jaundice: less than 7 days, 7-14 days, 14-21 days, 21-28 days, and over 28 days. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: In patients of the Groups I and II, pathological hepatic changes in the early stages of mechanical jaundice were manifested in the form of he-patocyte dystrophy and hepatitis development. In the Group I patients, manifestations of steatohepatitis, fibrosis and initial signs of liver cirrhosis were noted in the late stages of subhepatic cholestasis. In addition to the above-mentioned changes, Group II patients, in the late stages of mechanical jaundice, presented signs of severe fibrosis and well-shaped liver cirrhosis. Taking into account the above morphological changes in the liver with different duration of subhepatic cholestasis, we consider reasonable to decompress bile ducts in patients of older age groups at earlier stages of mechanical jaundice compared to young and middle-aged patients, thus preventing post-decompression liver dysfunction and the subsequent development of biliary cirrhosis.

The context and cause of adaptive radiations have been widely described and explored but why rapid evolutionary diversification does not occur in related evolutionary lineages has yet to be understood. The standard answer is that evolutionary diversification is provoked by ecological opportunity and that some lineages do not encounter the opportunity. Three-spined sticklebacks on the Scottish island of North Uist show enormous diversification, which seems to be associated with the diversity of aquatic habitats. Sticklebacks on the neighboring island of South Uist have not been reported to show the same level of evolutionary diversity, despite levels of environmental variation that we might expect to be similar to North Uist. In this study, we compared patterns of morphological and environmental diversity on North and South Uist. Ancestral anadromous sticklebacks from both islands exhibited similar morphology including size and bony "armor." Resident sticklebacks showed significant variation in armor traits in relation to pH of water. However, North Uist sticklebacks exhibited greater diversity of morphological traits than South Uist and this was associated with greater diversity in pH of the waters of lochs on North Uist. Highly acidic and highly alkaline freshwater habitats are missing, or uncommon, on South Uist. Thus, pH appears to act as a causal factor driving the evolutionary diversification of stickleback in local adaptation in North and South Uist. This is consistent with diversification being more associated with ecological constraint than ecological opportunity.

PURPOSE: To perform quantitative measurements of the anatomic morphology of the proximal ulna and establish the morphologic references based on Chinese for the surgical protocol and implant design. METHODS: The computed tomography data of 156 upper extremities were involved in this study. The ulna model was reconstructed in Mimics. Ten distance and 6 angle parameters were measured by 4 independent investigators with a new quantitative measurement method. The intraclass correlation coefficient was used to evaluate the measuring reliability. Gender and side differences of measured parameters were evaluated. RESULTS: Measurements showed a mean coronoid height of 15 mm, which was 42% of ulnar height with gender-specific differences (mean 16 mm in men and 14 mm in women, P < 0.001). A mean unsupported anteromedial facet width of 8 mm was 61% of the coronoid anteromedial facet. A larger opening angle correlates to a larger olecranon-diaphysis angle (P < 0.001) and larger coronoid height (P = 0.001). A mean proximal ulna dorsal angulation of 4.7° is present in 80% of models at an average of 52 mm distal to olecranon tip. The average proximal ulna varus angulation was 16° at a mean of 74 mm distal to the olecranon tip. Morphological features between the left and right sides were highly consistent. The ICC was between 0.789 and 0.978 for inter-observer and between 0.696 and 0.997 for intra-observer reliability. CONCLUSIONS: The proximal ulna features variable morphology but minor side differences among individuals. Over half of the anteromedial facet was not supported by the proximal ulnar diaphysis, making the coronoid vulnerable to elbow trauma. Preconditioning or customized design of the ulnar plate in the clinical setting with the help of contralateral morphology may be a good choice.

BACKGROUND: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is the most common autoimmune disease. Progressive depletion of the brain and spinal cord tissue appears at the onset of the disease. Several studies have shown the increased size of the ventricles of the brain and decreases in the area of the corpus callosum and the width of the brain. Other important symptoms of this disease are cognitive, learning, and memory disorders. AIM: The aim of this study was to compare morphometric, histological, and functional changes in the demyelination model in both sexes. MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this experimental study, male and female Wistar rats were studied in four experimental groups. Demyelination was induced by the injection of ethidium bromide in the ventricular region. The chronic effect of demyelination on spatial memory, movement, and coordination was investigated using the Morris Water Maze (MWM), and clinical and balance beam tests, respectively. Myelin degradation, cell death and neurogenesis were estimated using Luxol Fast Blue staining and immunohistochemistry (Caspase-3 and Nestin markers). In addition, morphometric findings were recorded for the brain and hippocampus (weight, volume, length, width). RESULT: Demyelination increased the time and distance index and decreased the residence time in the target quarter in the water maze test (p < .001). It also increases the neuromuscular and modified neurological severity score (p < .01). Demyelination increases caspase-3 (p < .05) expression and decreases Nestin expression (p < .001), which are directly related to the extent of damage. CONCLUSION: This study showed an interaction between hippocampal structural and functional networks in explaining spatial learning and memory in the early stages of MS.

BACKGROUND: CT scan images provide accurate anatomical data from different areas of the body that can be used to diagnose diseases. OBJECTIVES: The present work aimed to describe the normal anatomical structures of the Ile de France sheep head and its morphometric and volumetric properties using computed tomography (CT) and stereological methods. METHODS: Five adult Ile de France sheep heads, which were of mature age (above 10 months), were included in this study. The different cavities of the head, including the nasal cavity, paranasal sinuses, oral cavity, orbital cavity and vestibulocochlear system, were evaluated using CT scans, cross, sagittal and coronal sections. RESULTS: The mean length, height and width of the skull were 25.3 ± 1.02, 9.8 ± 0.93 and 12.3 ± 0.91 cm, respectively. The results showed that the nasal cavity is divided into three regions. Vestibular, respiratory and olfactory regions. The paranasal sinuses are composed of maxillary, frontal, palatine, sphenoid, lacrimal and ethmoidal that were identified and named in the CT scan images and their corresponding anatomical cross-sections. The total volume of the head, nasal cavity and oral cavity was estimated to be 2998 ± 202.00, 303 ± 31.33 and 229.3 ± 10.61 cm3 , respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The frontal sinus in the Ile de France sheep was limited to the frontal bone without extending into the parietal, temporal, or occipital bones, similar to Saanen goat. This study provided a comprehensive atlas of Ile de France sheep anatomy to internal medicine veterinarians and surgeons.

RESUMEN Introducción: En Cuba existen muy pocos estudios morfofuncionales de placentas procedentes de embarazos gemelares que permitan establecer un patrón morfométrico general. Implementar estas bases informacionales contribuiría a perfeccionar las acciones del Programa Nacional de Salud Sexual y Reproductiva en el país. Objetivo: Sistematizar información sobre estudios morfométricos en placentas gemelares para construir la base epistémica de la caracterización del patrón morfométrico de las placentas gemelares y su relación con la corionicidad, la función de este órgano y el grado de bienestar fetal y neonatal. Método: Se aplicó una estrategia de búsqueda en el período enero de 2020 hasta abril de 2021, en bases de datos internacionales (Medline, EMBASE, LILACS, Scopus, Google Académico) para la revisión bibliográfica, mediante la utilización del método de análisis y crítica de las fuentes desde el procedimiento de análisis de contenido. Se empleó un algoritmo para la toma de decisiones en torno a la pertinencia, actualidad novedad y aportes. Resultados: Se hallaron 16 fuentes bibliográficas sobre el tema de investigación, entre ellas: solo una tesis (6,25 %) y 4 textos editados (25 %). Predominaron los artículos científicos (68,75 %) de los últimos cinco años (93,75 %). Todas las fuentes contribuyeron a la construcción de los referentes teóricos. Conclusiones: El estudio morfométrico de la placenta en embarazos gemelares es un área insuficientemente desarrollada en el conocimiento de las ciencias básicas biomédicas, dada la escasa producción bibliográfica sobre el tema.


ABSTRACT Introduction: In Cuba there are very few morphofunctional studies of placentas from twin pregnancies that allow establishing a general morphometric pattern. Implementing these informational databases would help to improve the actions of the National Sexual and Reproductive Health Program in the country. Objective: To systematize information on morphometric studies in twin placentas to build the epistemic basis for the characterization of the morphometric pattern of twin placentas and its relationship with chorionicity, the function of this organ and the degree of fetal and neonatal well-being. Method: A search strategy was applied in the period January 2020 to April 2021, in international databases (Medline, EMBASE, LILACS, Scopus, Google Scholar) for the bibliographic review, using the analysis and criticism method. of the sources from the content analysis procedure. An algorithm was used to make decisions about relevance, news, news and contributions. Results: 16 bibliographic sources were found on the research topic, among them: only one thesis (6.25%) and 4 edited texts (25.0%). Scientific articles (68.75%) from the last five years (93.75%) predominated. All the sources contributed to the construction of the theoretical referents. Conclusions: The morphometric study of the placenta in twin pregnancies is an insufficiently developed area in the knowledge of basic biomedical sciences, given the scarce bibliographic production on the subject.

Predominaram artigos científicos (68,75%) dos últimos cinco anos (93,75%). Todas as fontes contribuíram para a construção dos referentes teóricos. Conclusões: O estudo morfométrico da placenta em gestações gemelares é uma área pouco desenvolvida no conhecimento das ciências biomédicas básicas, dada a escassa produção bibliográfica sobre o assunto.

Introduction We investigated the mechanism of ptosis of the brain stem and cerebellum (hindbrain) in Chiari malformation type I (CM-I) and classified CM-I according to pathogenesis, based on a morphometric study of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF) and craniovertebral junction (CVJ). We discuss the appropriate surgical treatment for hindbrain ptosis. Materials and Methods We examined 500 patients with CM-I and 100 healthy control individuals. We calculated the volume of the PCF (VPCF) and measured the axial length of the enchondral parts of the occipital bone and hindbrain. As statistical analyses, for the multiple analyses, heavy palindromic tests were used. Using three independent objective parameters, we tried to classify CM-I. Results Three independent subtypes were confirmed (CM-I types A, B, and C). CM-I type A (167 cases): normal VPCF, normal volume of the area surrounding the foramen magnum (VSFM), and normal occipital bone size; CM-I type B (178 cases): normal VPCF, small VSFM, and small occipital bone size; and CM-I type C (155 cases): small VPCF, small VSFM, and small occipital bone size. Conclusions Morphometric analyses of PCF and CVJ were very useful for the investigation of the mechanism of hindbrain ptosis and classifying CM-I according to pathogenesis. CM-I type A included mechanisms other than hindbrain ptosis, for example, CVJ instability, tethered cord, and increased intracranial pressure. CM-I types B and C demonstrated underdevelopment of the occipital bone. For CM-I types B and C, posterior decompression should be performed. For CM-I type A, appropriate surgical management should be selected.

Introduction We classified Chiari malformation type I (CM-I) according to the mechanism of ptosis of the brain stem and cerebellum, based on a morphometric study of the posterior cranial fossa (PCF) and craniovertebral junction (CVJ). Surgery was performed to manage the mechanism of the hindbrain ptosis. Materials and Methods We calculated the volume of the PCF (VPCF) and the area surrounding the foramen magnum (VSFM) and measured the axial length of the enchondral parts of the occipital bone (occipital bone size) and the hindbrain. According to these measures, we classified CM-I into type A (normal VPCF, normal VSFM, and normal occipital bone size), type B (normal VPCF, small VSFM, and small occipital bone size), and type C (small VPCF, small VSFM, and small occipital bone size). Foramen magnum decompression (FMD) (280 cases) was performed on CM-I types A and B. Expansive suboccipital cranioplasty (ESCP) was performed on CM-I type C. Posterior craniocervical fixation (CCF) was performed in cases with CVJ instability. Lysis of the adhesion and/or sectioning of the filum terminale were performed on cases with tethered cord syndrome. Results Both ESCP and FMD had a high rate of improvement of neurological symptoms (87%) and recovery rate. There was only small number of complications. CCF had a high rate of improvement of neurological symptoms (88%) and joint stabilization. Conclusion In the management of Chiari malformation, appropriate surgical methods that address ptosis of the hindbrain should be chosen. Each surgical approach resulted in a good improvement of neurological symptoms.

Echinococcus granulosus is a tapeworm whose life cycle includes dogs and other canines as final hosts, while domestic and wild ungulates act as intermediate hosts for the tissue-invading larval stage (metacestode). E. granulosus has a worldwide geographical distribution. Protoscolices and rostellar hooks of E. granulosus are useful for diagnosis and rostellar hook morphometric features may be useful to discriminate E. granulosus and related species. The present study was aimed to determine a more suitable lytic solution and to obtain a clearest vision for performing morphometric studies on the rostellar hooks of E. granulosus protoscolices. Five fertile hydatid cyst samples were collected from sheep in Kirkuk slaughterhouse, Iraq, during June of 2015. According to the results of the present study, proteinase-K lytic solution is the best approach in morphometric analysis to get a clear vision of rostellar hooks and a safer usage in comparison with solutions containing lactophenol (lactophenol, lactophenol blue).

BACKGROUND: There is no general consensus on the normal and pathological values for the posterior tibial slope (PTS). PURPOSE/HYPOTHESIS: The primary aim of this study was to determine standard values for the PTS in healthy participants using 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT). A secondary aim was to determine the effect of demographic factors and coronal-plane lower limb alignment on the PTS measurement. The hypothesis was that the PTS would be significantly influenced by demographic factors and coronal-plane lower limb alignment. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. METHODS: A CT-based modeling and analytics system was used to examine and measure lower limb alignment and the PTS in 378 patients (193 male and 185 female; mean age, 58.3 ± 16.4 years [range, 18-92 years]; mean body mass index, 25.0 ± 4.4 kg/m2). The lateral, medial, and global PTS were measured for each patient. All measurements were constructed using algorithm-calculated landmarks, resulting in reproducible and consistent constructs for each specimen. The results were then evaluated based on ethnicity, sex, and hip-knee-ankle (HKA) angle. RESULTS: The study population comprised 219 white and 159 Asian participants. The mean global, medial, and lateral PTS were 6.3° (range, -5.5° to 14.7°; 1% with ≥12°), 6.2° (range, -4.1° to 17.2°; 3% with ≥12°), and 5.3° (range, -4.7° to 16.2°; 2% with ≥12°), respectively. The lateral (Δ = -1.0° [95% CI, 0.6°-1.6°]; P < .0001) and global (Δ = -0.5° [95% CI, 0.0°-0.8°]; P = .0332) PTS were smaller in the female subpopulation. The global PTS was greater (Δ = 1.9° [95% CI, 1.5°-2.3°]; P < .0001) in the Asian subpopulation. The mean HKA angle was 179.6° (range, 170°-190°). The HKA angle was significantly correlated with the medial and global PTS. Specimens with a genu varum knee exhibited a significantly greater global (Δ = 1.2° [95% CI, 0.8°-1.7°]; P < .0001) and medial (Δ = 1.9° [95% CI, 1.3°-2.5°]; P < .0001) PTS. CONCLUSION: The present study gives a benchmark for the physiological values of the PTS in a healthy population and highlights several factors influencing the PTS, such as ethnicity, sex, and alignment. Anatomic variants with a PTS ≥12° were very uncommon (≤3%) in our Asian and white groups and thus could be considered as pathological. The PTS is a crucial anatomic factor for anterior cruciate ligament injuries and reconstruction. A general consensus is lacking regarding the cutoff for abnormal values, thus guiding standard of care. This study investigated the dispersion of global, medial, and lateral posterior plateau tibial angles in a large population representing a range of demographic diversity.

BACKGROUND: Osteotomies in the cervical spine are technically challenging. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of the modified pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO) technique at C7 to be used for the treatment of cervicothoracic kyphosis secondary to ankylosing spondylitis. METHODS: A total of 120 cervical spine computed tomography (CT) scans (of 82 male and 38 female patients) were evaluated. The scans were taken parallel to the middle sagittal plane and the sagittal plane intersecting the pedicles. Simulated osteotomy was performed by setting the apex of the wedge osteotomy at different points, and morphologic measurements were obtained. Seven patients with cervicothoracic kyphosis who underwent a modified PSO at C7 between May 2009 and June 2015 were retrospectively evaluated. The mean follow up was 32.9 months (range 21-54 months). Preoperative and postoperative chin-brow vertical angle (CBVA), sagittal vertical axis (SVA) and sagittal Cobb angle of the cervical region were reviewed. The outcomes were analyzed through various measures, which included the 36-Item Short Form Health Survey (SF-36) and a visual analog scale for neck pain. RESULTS: In this morphometric study, a modified PSO was performed on 87 patients (59 male and 28 female) with a reasonable ratio of 72.5%. In the case series, radiographic parameters and health-related quality-of-life measures were found to show significant postoperative improvement in all patients. No major complications occurred, and no implant failures were noted until the latest follow up. CONCLUSIONS: The modified PSO is a safe and valid alternative to the classic PSO, allowing for excellent correction of cervical kyphosis and improvement in health-related quality-of-life measures.

PURPOSE: The occipital condyles (OCs) are crucial anatomical structures in the cranial base. To our knowledge, there is no cone beam computed tomography (CBCT)-based study on the morphometric analysis of OCs. The aim of this study was to evaluate the morphometric analysis of OCs using CBCT. METHODS: CBCT images of 200 OCs from 100 patients of which 39 males and 61 females in the age group of 18-67 years were included in the study population. Linear and angular measurements of OCs were performed. RESULTS: The average OC width, length, height, sagittal angle, and effective height were 10.3 ± 1.3 mm, 19.6 ± 2.0 mm, 9.1 ± 1.4 mm, 7.4 ± 1.7 mm, and 35.3 ± 5.2 mm. Condylar width and sagittal angle measurements were found significantly different between the right and left sides; and were not found significant difference between the right and left sides in the measurements of condylar height, length, and effective height. Also the average intercondylar anterior distance (ICAD), intercondylar posterior distance (ICPD), distance between the basion and the anterior apex of the occipital condyle (B-AAOC), distance between the basion and posterior apex of the occipital condyle (B-PAOC), distance between the opisthion and anterior apex of occipital condyle (O-AAOC), and distance between the opisthion and posterior apex of occipital condyle (O-PAOC) were 20.9 ± 1.5 mm, 44.0 ± 2.0 mm, 12.3 ± 1.9 mm, 34.5 ± 4.2 mm, 29.8 ± 1.7 mm, and 27.0 ± 2.1 mm. There was not significant difference in the morphometric measurements among age groups. All morphometric measurements showed a significant difference depending on gender. CONCLUSIONS: The morphometric evaluation of OCs may be effectively examined using CBCT. Linear and angular measurements data of OCs in the present study may be used as a reference database for future morphometric and surgical investigations.

The aim of this study was to determine the normal values of brain ventricles and indices in healthy subjects in our population using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and to reveal sex and age related differences. The MRI of two hundred-sixty-five healthy individuals aged between eighteen and eighty-seven years were examined and the midsagittal and axial images were used for measurements. The measurements were performed from MRI on a Workstation. The following mean values of brain ventricles and indices were observed; frontal horn width (FHW) (33.14 mm); third (3rd) ventricle width (TVW) (3.37 mm); fourth ventricle anteroposterior width (FVWAP) (9.93 mm); fourth ventricle transverse width (FVWT) (12.40 mm); and the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull (TIDS) (128.75 mm) in females. The same dimensions were 34.85 mm, 3.91 mm, 10.26 mm, 12.81 mm, and 134.68 mm in males, respectively. There were statistically significantly differences in the frontal horn width, third (3rd) ventricle width, and the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull values in between sexes. The mean values of Evans' index which obtanied with maximum width between the frontal horns of the lateral ventricles divided by the maximum transverse inner diameter of the skull were found as 0.280 ±0.172 in females; whereas the same dimensions were calculated 0.276±0.161 in males. These values were lower in healthy male subjects than females, however; there were no found significantly difference between groups. Present findings obtained from MRI are necessary anatomical baseline data for interpreting pathological changes, planning surgery, and determining presence and progress of some neurological diseases.


El objetivo de este estudio fue determinar los valores normales de los ventrículos e índices cerebrales en sujetos sanos en nuestra población mediante el uso de imágenes de resonancia magnética (RM) y revelar las diferencias relacionadas con el sexo y la edad. Se examinó la resonancia magnética de 265 individuos sanos de entre 18 y 87 años, y se utilizaron las imágenes en sentido medio y sagital para las mediciones. Las mediciones se realizaron a partir de IRM en una estación de trabajo. Se observaron los siguientes valores medios de ventrículos e índices cerebrales: longitud del asta frontal (FHW) (33,14 mm); longitud del tercer ventrículo (TVW) (3,37 mm); longitud anteroposterior del cuarto ventrículo (FVWAP) (9,93 mm); longitud transversal del cuarto ventrículo (FVWT) (12,40 mm); y el diámetro transversal máximo del cráneo (SID) (128,75 mm) en las hembras. Las mismas dimensiones fueron 34,85 mm, 3,91 mm, 10,26 mm, 12,81 mm y 134,68 mm en machos, respectivamente. Hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el ancho del asta frontal, el ancho del tercer ventrículo y el diámetro interno transversal máximo de los valores del cráneo entre los sexos. Los valores medios del índice de Evans que obtuvieron el ancho máximo entre los cuernos frontales de los ventrículos laterales dividido por el diámetro interno transversal máximo del cráneo se encontraron en 0,280 ± 0,172 en las mujeres; mientras que las mismas dimensiones se calcularon en hombres (0,276 ± 0,161). Sin embargo, estos valores fueron más bajos en hombres sanos que en mujeres; no se encontraron diferencias significativas entre los grupos. Los hallazgos actuales obtenidos de IRM son datos anatómicos de referencia necesarios para interpretar los cambios patológicos, planificar la cirugía y determinar la presencia y el progreso de algunas enfermedades neurológicas.

Patterns and variant morphometries of calcaneal articular facets on talus are concerned before performing of joint ankle surgery, including used as a sex determination. Types of talar facets have been documented in many populations except in Thai race. Therefore, this study attempted to classify the types of talus facets and to measure the facet lengths on dried tali of Thais. The 372 dried tali (204 males, 168 females) from Khon Kaen University Bone Collection were observed for variant types and measured for their facet lengths. The facets were classified into 6 types: type I, tree facet are separated (1.88 %); type II (A), the anterior and middle facets are partially connected with predominant ridge (34.68 %); type II (B), the anterior and middle facets are partially connected with slight ridge (32.53 %); type III, the anterior and middle facets are fully fused to form a single facet (2.96 %); type IV, the anterior and middle facets are partially separated by a ridge and partly by a groove (27.42 %); type V, all facets are continuous fused to form a single facet (0.54 %). In addition, the morphometric lengths of AP (anterior to posterior process) and ML1&2 (medial to lateral process) in male are significantly greater than those of female. The AP, ML, and ML2 of male are 56.71±0.16, 41.63±0.18, and 37.85±0.36 mm, while of female are 51.21±0.12, 37.74±0.16, and 33.85±0.28 mm, respectively. This incidence can be used as ankle surgery consideration and an anthropological marker for sex determination of unidentified talus.


Los patrones y las variantes morfométricas de las facetas articulares calcáneas en el talus deben considerarse antes de la realización de la cirugía del tobillo a nivel articular, incluido su uso para la determinación del sexo. Se han documentado los tipos de facetas en el talus en muchas poblaciones, excepto en la raza tailandesa. Por lo tanto, este estudio clasificó los tipos de facetas del talus y se midieron las longitudes de las facetas del talus, en muestras secas de indiviuos tailandeses. Se analizaron 372 talus secos (204 de hombres, 168 de mujeres) de la colección de huesos de la Universidad Khon Kaen, se observaron distintos tipos de variantes y se midieron las longitudes de las facetas. Las facetas se clasificaron en 6 tipos: tipo I, faceta de árbol separadas (1,88 %); tipo II (A), facetas anterior y media parcialmente conectadas con la cresta predominante (34,68 %); tipo II (B), facetas anterior y media están parcialmente conectadas con una ligera cresta (32,53 %); tipo III, facetas anterior y media están completamente fusionadas para formar una sola faceta (2,96 %); tipo IV, facetas anterior y media están parcialmente separadas por una cresta y en parte por una ranura (27,42 %); tipo V, todas las facetas se fusionan continuamente para formar una sola faceta (0,54 %). Además, las longitudes morfométricas del proceso anterior o posterior (AP) y del proceso medial a lateral (ML1 y ML2) en el varón son significativamente mayores que las de la mujer. El AP, ML1 y ML2 de los hombres son 56,71 ± 0,16, 41,63 ± 0,18 y 37,85 ± 0,36 mm, mientras que las mujeres son 51,21 ± 0,12, 37,74 ± 0,16 y 33,85 ± 0,28 mm, respectivamente. Esta incidencia se puede utilizar como una consideración en la cirugía de tobillo y un marcador antropológico para determinar el sexo del talus no identificado.

Introduction The psoas muscle group is part of the posterior abdominal wall and is comprised of long muscles - major, minor, and tertius. Out of those, only the psoas major muscle is an obligatory muscle present in all individuals. The psoas minor muscle (PMM) originates as vertical fascicles inserted in the bodies of the last thoracic and first lumbar vertebrae and inserting into the iliopectineal eminence. The muscle provide flexion of the lumbar spine in a limited fashion. The aim of the study was to establish the frequency of the muscle in the Bulgarian population. Materials and methods This study was carried out in the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology, Medical University, Varna, Bulgaria, by Dr. Paraskev Stoyanov in November 2017, on a total of 10 cadavers. The length, width, and circumference of the muscles were measured. The collected data were interpreted in a descriptive manner. Results The PMM was present in six out of ten cadavers (60%). Out of those six cadavers, the muscle was bilateral in three, unilateral on the left side in one, and unilateral on the right side in two cadavers. The average length of the muscle was 19.66 cm (range:14.4 cm - 21.7 cm), average width was 1.73 cm (range: 1.0 cm - 3.2 cm ) and average circumference was 3.48 cm (range: 1.7 cm - maximum 5.6 cm). The male to female ratio of cadavers with a PMM was 1:1. Conclusion The frequency of the muscle's variations considering its presence in the Bulgarian population (60%) is higher when compared to its presence in the Indian population (36.67%), virtually identical to the Brazilian population (59%), and lower than that reported in the US (65.6%). The morphometric analyses of the different populations showed a shorter psoas minor in the Bulgarian population.

OBJECTIVE The revelation of normative radiographic measurements for the developing pediatric spine is incomplete. The purpose of this analysis was to determine the normal range of asymmetry of the lateral atlantodental interval (LADI) and define age- and sex-related differences. METHODS A total of 3072 children aged 0-18 years who underwent CT scanning of the cervical spine were identified at Riley Hospital for Children between 2005 and 2017. Patients were stratified by sex and age (in years) into 36 cohorts. Following this stratification, patients within each group were randomly selected for inclusion until 15 patients in each group had been measured (quota sampling). A total of 540 patients were included for study. Right and left linear measurements were performed in the CT axial plane at the C-1 midlateral mass level. RESULTS The overall mean difference between the right and left LADI was 0.09 ± 1.23 mm (range -6.05 to 4.87 mm). The magnitude of this asymmetry remained statistically insignificant across age groups (p = 0.278) and sex (p = 0.889). The intraclass correlation coefficient was 0.805 (95% CI 0.779-0.829). CONCLUSIONS Asymmetry of the LADI is not unusual in asymptomatic children. There is no appreciable difference in magnitude of this asymmetry across age ranges and sex. Measurement of LADI asymmetry shows "good" reliability and is easy to perform. Pediatric neurosurgeons, emergency department physicians, and radiologists should be aware of normative values of asymmetry when interpreting CT scans of the cervical spine. This may prevent unnecessary further workup with dynamic CT or MRI.

INTRODUCTION: The cerebellopontine angle (CPA) is a subarachnoid space in the lateral aspect of the posterior fossa. In this study, we propose a complementary analysis of the CPA from the cerebellopontine fissure. METHODS: We studied 50 hemi-cerebelli in the laboratory of neuroanatomy and included a description of the CPA anatomy from the cerebellopontine fissure and its relationship with the flocculus and the 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th cranial nerves (CN) origins. RESULTS: The average distance from the 5th CN to the mid-line (ML) was 19.2 mm, 6th CN to ML was 4.4 mm, 7-8 complex to ML was 15.8 mm, flocculus to ML was 20.5 mm, and flocculus to 5th CN was 11.5 mm, additionally, and the diameter of the flocculus was 9.0 mm. The angle between the vertex in the flocculus and the V CN and the medullary-pontine line was 64.8 degrees. DISCUSSION: The most common access to the CPA is through the retrosigmoid-suboccipital region and this approach can be done with the help of an endoscope. The anatomy of origins of neural structures tends to be preserved in cases of CPA lesions. CONCLUSION: Knowledge of the average distances between the neural structures in the cerebellar-pontine fissure and the angular relationships between these structures facilitates the use of surgical approaches such as microsurgery and endoscopy.

BACKGROUND: A retrospective cohort study of patients with tuberculum sellae meningioma (TSM)-associated sphenoidal pneumosinus dilatans (PSD) over a recent epoch was evaluated using a propensity-matched morphometric analysis. METHODS: A total of 38 patients with TSM and sphenoidal PSD were identified and matched by age and sex to 32 patients without tumors (controls). RESULTS: Overall, no significant difference between test and control groups was noted in sphenoid sinus size or other parameters; however, significantly greater mean distances from the posterior margin of the planum sphenoidale to the diaphragma sella (0.76 ± 0.23 vs. 1.03 ± 0.27, respectively; P = 0.0001) and angle between the planum sphenoidale to anterior face of sella turcica (113.41 ± 10.58 vs. 123.21 ± 12.55, respectively; P = 0.001) were seen in patients with TSM and PSD, suggestive of a selective expansion of the tuberculum sellae region. TSM/sphenoid sinus morphologies were divided into 3 types (A, B, and C) based on the extent of tumor and sinus morphology. There was progressive increase in tumor volume and anteroposterior sinus diameter from sphenoidal PSD types A-C, which influenced selection of surgical approach. CONCLUSIONS: This study suggests that TSM-associated sphenoidal PSD leads to more selective splaying of the tuberculum sellae region rather than cumulative increase in sinus volume. This may lead to operative corridor expansion for endonasal access to TSM associated with sphenoidal PSD. A radiologic classification scheme for sphenoidal PSD associated with TSM is suggested that may aid surgical decision-making.
