This study was conducted to evaluate morphometric traits of horse ecotypes reared in four districts of the Bale highlands, southeastern Ethiopia. Twenty-seven morphometric traits were measured from 500 horses (294 males and 206 females) of both sexes. Data were analyzed using SAS 2012. This study revealed that certain traits, such as head length, loin length, bi-ischial width, and sternum height of horses were similar. However, significant differences (p < 0.0001, p < 0.01, p < 0.05) were observed in other traits across the districts. All traits were affected by age (p < 0.05) except rump width and canon perimeter. All 27 morphometric traits were subjected to STEPDISC analysis, of which 21 had the best discriminating power. The uppermost distances of 32.2 and, 28.8 were reported between the Agarfa and Dinsho and, Agarfa and Sinana horse populations, respectively. Mean separation distance among districts ranges from -1.75 to 3.57, -2.42 to 2.43, and -1.61 to 0.92 for CAN1, CAN2 and CAN3, respectively. The quadratic discriminate function classified 95.2, 94.4, 96.0, and 96.8 % of the sampled horses into source populations of the Dinsho, Agarfa, Sinana, and Goba districts, respectively. In addition, the cross-validation summary revealed reduced consistency of membership among each districts with 5 % average success rates and 4, 8, 4, and 4 % for the Dinsho, Agarfa, Sinana, and Goba districts, respectively. Therefore, the presence of variation in morphometric traits within the Bale Highland horse ecotypes has the potential for selection and further genetic interventions.

Background: The introduction provides an in-depth understanding of the acetabulum's anatomical structure and its significance in hip joint biomechanics. It highlights the variability in acetabular morphology among normal individuals, emphasizing the importance of establishing normal ranges for accurate diagnosis of acetabular deformities. The section also underscores the role of geographical, racial, and anatomical factors in influencing acetabular parameters, crucial for orthopedic interventions and surgical outcomes like total hip arthroplasty. Furthermore, it discusses the limitations of traditional imaging methods and the necessity of advanced techniques like computed tomography (CT) scans for precise evaluation and preoperative planning in hip surgeries. Materials and methods: The study adopted a cross-sectional design at a tertiary care center, enrolling 94 participants using purposive sampling for CT evaluation of acetabular morphology. Morphometric parameters including center edge angle of Wiberg, acetabular angle of Sharp, acetabular version, acetabular depth, and joint space width were measured using CT scans, while BMI categorization and statistical analyses were conducted to explore gender-based and side-based differences and correlations with BMI and age. Results: The study included 94 patients with ages ranging from 20 to 82 years (mean age: 49±15 years), predominantly in the 41-50 years age group. Female participants slightly outnumbered males. The mean BMI was 23.5±3.2 kg/m2, with variations across different age and BMI categories. Most morphometric parameters showed no significant differences between sexes or sides but did correlate with age and BMI, notably the center edge angle positively correlating with BMI in males. Conclusions: The study found correlations between morphometric parameters of the acetabulum and both age and BMI. Specifically, the center edge angle demonstrated a positive correlation with BMI in males and a weak positive correlation with age. Acetabular angle showed a negative correlation with BMI, highlighting potential implications for understanding hip joint health and conditions related to BMI changes.

BACKGROUND: It has been demonstrated that progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) correlates with structural abnormalities in several distinct regions of the brain. However, whether there are changes in the morphological similarity network (MSN) and the relationship between changes in brain structure and gene expression remain largely unknown. METHODS: We used two independent cohorts (discovery dataset: PSP: 51, healthy controls (HC): 82; replication dataset: PSP: 53, HC: 55) for MSN analysis and comparing the longitudinal changes in the MSN of PSP. Then, we applied partial least squares regression to determine the relationships between changes in MSN and spatial transcriptional features and identified specific genes associated with MSN differences in PSP. We further investigated the biological processes enriched in PSP-associated genes and the cellular characteristics of these genes, and finally, we performed an exploratory analysis of the relationship between MSN changes and neurotransmitter receptors. RESULTS: We found that the MSN in PSP patients was mainly decreased in the frontal and temporal cortex but increased in the occipital cortical region. This difference is replicable. In longitudinal studies, MSN differences are mainly manifested in the frontal and parietal regions. Furthermore, the expression pattern associated with MSN changes in PSP involves genes implicated in astrocytes and excitatory and inhibitory neurons and is functionally enriched in neuron-specific biological processes related to synaptic signaling. Finally, we found that the changes in MSN were mainly negatively correlated with the levels of serotonin, norepinephrine, and opioid receptors. CONCLUSIONS: These results have enhanced our understanding of the microscale genetic and cellular mechanisms responsible for large-scale morphological abnormalities in PSP patients, suggesting potential targets for future therapeutic trials.

Introduction: Autologous breast reconstruction remains a popular surgical option following mastectomy; however, it is not without complications. Preoperative CT angiograms (CTAs) are often obtained for surgical planning, and morphometric data such as fat and muscle distribution can be measured. This study aimed to assess if CTA morphometric data predicts abdominal donor site complications in patients undergoing abdominally based autologous breast reconstruction. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was performed for patients who underwent abdominally based autologous breast reconstruction from 2013 to 2018. Along with population and operative characteristics, preoperative morphometric variables were assessed for the following: subcutaneous adipose tissue, visceral adipose tissue, skeletal muscle area and index, rectus and psoas cross-sectional area, and bone density. Statistical comparison to abdominal donor site complications was performed using logistic regression analysis for every 100-unit change. Results: A total of 174 patients were included in this study. Visceral adipose tissue was significantly associated with the development of infection (P = .005), epidermolysis (P = .031), and seroma (P = .04). Subcutaneous adipose tissue, skeletal muscle index, cross-sectional muscle area, and bone density were not associated with abdominal donor site complications. Obesity (P = .024), history of smoking (P = .049), and the number of perforators harvested (P = .035) significantly increased the likelihood of delayed abdominal healing. Conclusions: This study demonstrates that increased visceral adipose tissue, as measured by CTA, is significantly associated with an increased risk of abdominal donor site complications. CTA morphometric data and identifying high-risk patient characteristics can help guide preoperative counseling and better inform surgical risks.


Introduction : La reconstruction mammaire autologue reste une option chirurgicale appréciée après une mastectomie. Toutefois, elle ne va pas sans complications. Des angio-TDM préopératoires sont souvent effectués dans le cadre de la planification chirurgicale et les données morphométriques (comme la répartition du tissu adipeux et musculaire) peuvent être mesurées. Cette étude a eu pour but d'évaluer si les données morphométriques de la TDM prédisent les complications abdominales au site donneur chez les patientes subissant une reconstruction mammaire autologue à partir de tissus abdominaux. Méthodes : Une étude de cohorte rétrospective a été effectuée avec des patients ayant subi une reconstruction mammaire autologue à base abdominale entre 2013 et 2018. Parallèlement aux caractéristiques opératoires et de la population, les variables morphométriques préopératoires suivantes ont été évaluées : tissu adipeux sous-cutané, tissu adipeux viscéral, surface de muscle squelettique et surface transversale index, du grand droit et du psoas, densité osseuse. Une comparaison statistique aux complications du site donneur abdominal a été réalisée au moyen d'une analyse de régression logistique pour chaque changement de 100 unités. Résultats: Cent-soixante-quatorze patientes ont été incluses dans l'étude. Le tissu adipeux viscéral a été associé de manière significative avec le développement d'une infection (P = 0005), d'une épidermolyse (P = 0031 et d'un sérome (P = 0,04). Le tissu adipeux sous-cutané, l'indice de muscle squelettique, la surface musculaire transversale et la densité osseuse n'ont pas été associées à des complications abdominales du site donneur. L'obésité (P = 0024), les antécédents de tabagisme (P = 0049) et le nombre de perforantes collectées (P = 0035) ont significativement augmenté la probabilité du retard de guérison abdominales. Conclusions: Cette étude démontre que l'augmentation de tissu adipeux viscéral, mesurée par angio-TDM, est significativement associée à une augmentation du risque de complications abdominales au site donneur. Les données morphométriques de l'angio-TDM et l'identification des caractéristiques des patients à risque élevé peuvent aider à orienter les conseils préopératoires et à mieux renseigner sur les risques chirurgicaux.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to evaluate changes in shape of the palatal vault after maxillary expansion with hyrax expander (HE) and leaf expander (LE), using 3D Geometric Morphometric Analysis. SETTING AND SAMPLE POPULATION: Overall, 250 patients (110 M, 140 F) with maxillary transverse deficiency were selected for this study. In this study, 127 subjects were treated with HE, 123 with LE. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Digital dental models were obtained pre-treatment (T0) and after 12 months from the cementation of the device (T1) and processed by means of a digital scanner. Linear and morphometric analyses were conducted to determine the effects of each appliance on dental measurements and palatal shape, and a multiple linear regression was performed to analyse the influence of anchorage and appliance type on final shape. RESULTS: Morphometric analysis showed that there was a lowering of the palatal vault in the HE group, while in the LE group it remained unchanged: the difference in palatal shape at time T0 and T1 was statistically significant in both treatments (HE vs. LE). In the HE group, the change in shape also included the upper part of the palatal vault in the vertical dimension, while in the LE group the change in shape interested mainly palatal shelves and the lower portion of the palate. CONCLUSIONS: Both LE and HE produce clinically significant changes in the morphology of the palatal vault.

Background: Chiari I malformation (CMI) is characterized by inferior descent of the cerebellar tonsils through the foramen magnum and is associated with headache and neck pain. Many morphometric research efforts have aimed to describe CMI anatomy in the midsagittal plane using classical measurement techniques such as linear dimensions and angles. These methods are less frequently applied to parasagittal features and may fall short in quantifying more intricate anatomy with fewer distinct homologous landmarks. Methods: Landmark-based geometric morphometric techniques were used to asses CMI morphology in five anatomical planes of interest. Results: Significant shape differences between CMI and age/sex-matched controls were found in the midsagittal (Pseudo-F = 5.4841, p = 0.001) and axial planes through the rostral medulla (Pseudo-F = 7.6319, p = 0.001). In addition to tonsillar descent, CMI principal component 1 (PC1) scores in the midsagittal protocol were associated with marked anterior concavity of the brainstem and generalized verticality of the cerebellum with anterior rotation of its anterior lobe. In the axial medulla/cerebellum protocol, CMI PC1 scores were associated with greater anterior-posterior (A-P) dimension with loss of medial-lateral (M-L) dimension. Discussion: These results suggest that CMI is associated with greater curvature of the brainstem and spinal cord, which may perturb normal neural activities and disrupt cerebrospinal fluid movements. Previous reports on the A-P diameter of the posterior fossa in CMI have conflicted; our findings of greater A-P cerebellar dimensionality with concomitant loss of width alludes to the possibility that more caudal aspects of the posterior cranial fossa are more bowl-like (homogenous in axial dimensions) and less trough-like or elongated in the M-L direction.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to clarify the relationship between 43-kDa TAR DNA-binding protein (TDP-43) pathology and spinal cord anterior horn motor neuron (AHMN) atrophy in sporadic amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (SALS). METHODS: Eight patients with SALS and 12 controls were included in this study. Formalin-fixed specimens of lumbar spinal cord samples were paraffin-embedded and sectioned at the level of the fourth lumbar spinal cord with a 4 µm thickness. Using a microscope, the long diameters of the neurons with nucleoli were measured in spinal AHMNs stained with an anti-SMI-32 antibody. AHMNs were divided into medial and lateral nuclei for statistical analysis. We also used previously reported data to measure the long diameter of AHMNs with initial TDP-43 pathology, in which TDP-43 was present both in the nucleus and cytoplasm. RESULTS: The long diameter of the lumbar spinal AHMNs in patients with SALS was smaller in the medial nucleus (42.54 ± 9.33 µm, n = 24) and the lateral nucleus (49.41 ± 13.86 µm, n = 129) than in controls (medial nucleus: 55.84 ± 13.49 µm, n = 85, p < 0.001; lateral nucleus: 62.39 ± 13.29 µm, n = 756, p < 0.001, Mann-Whitney U test). All 21 motor neurons with initial TDP-43 pathology were in the lateral nucleus, and their long diameter (67.60 ± 18.3 µm, p = 0.352) was not significantly different from that of controls. CONCLUSION: Motor neuron atrophy in SALS does not occur during the initial stages of TDP-43 pathology, and TDP-43 pathology is already advanced in the atrophied motor neurons.

Sperm morphology is considered the best indicator of male fertility. In Neotropical bats, important aspects of sperm morphology have been scantly studied. The aim of the present study was to characterize and compare the sperm morphology and morphometry of Artibeus planirostris and Sturnira erythromos. A total of 11 specimens were analyzed from the Colección de Mamíferos Lillo: five A. planirostris and six S. erythromos. The fixed epididymis were extracted and macerated in Farmer's solution, followed by the routine cytological procedure with different stains. To carry out the description and morphometric analysis, microphotographs were taken under an optical, epifluorescence and scanning electron microscope. A total of 50 sperm from each individual were measured for morphometric analysis. The percentage of normal/abnormal spermatozoa was estimated and the sperm abnormalities were classified. Both species showed morphologically simple spermatozoa with a spatulate head, a short neck, a helical midpiece and a tail that tapers at the final end, similar to other species of Phyllostomidae. The differences observed were: apex of the head was conical in A. planirostris and was oval in S. erythromos; longer head and midpiece in S. erythomos and longer sperm in A. planirostris. Both species showed a high percentage of sperm with normal appearance: 65% for A. planirostris and 72% for S. erythromos. The main sperm abnormalities were: scattered tails and heads, coiled tails, folded midpieces and presence of cytoplasmic droplets. The present work will improve the understanding of their reproductive biology. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS: Morphological descriptions and morphometric analyses of the sperm of Artibeus planirostris and Sturnira erythromos were carried out with optical, epifluorescence and scanning electron microscopy.

The present study investigated the biochemical polymorphism of hemoglobin (Hb) and its relationship with performance traits of Ethiopian indigenous and Sasso chicken breeds. A total of 284 chickens reared in three agro-ecologies were examined for genetic diversity and associations with productive traits at Hb locus using agarose gel electrophoresis. The results showed that the HbA allele was dominant in both breeds, and a higher proportion of male chickens were HbAA genotypes, while females were predominantly HbBB types. In the highland agro-ecology, chickens with the HbAA genotype were the most dominant, whereas in mid- and low-land agro-ecologies, chickens with HbBB and HbAB genotypes were found to be more frequent. A moderate level of expected heterozygosity was obtained with 0.47 and 0.445 for indigenous and Sasso chickens, respectively, with an average effective number of alleles per locus of 1.89 and 1.80. Moreover, chickens with HbAA genotypes showed significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher body weight and linear body measurements than those of HbAB and HbBB genotypes. However, for appendage body structures (comb and wattle dimensions), chickens with the HbAB and HbBB genotypes had higher mean values. Additionally, clutch size (14.2 ± 0.4), clutch length (21.8 ± 0.7), and eight-month egg production (84.1 ± 1.2) were significantly (p ≤ 0.05) higher for hens with HbBB genotypes, followed by those with HbAB-types. Therefore, the considerable hemoglobin variability and significant associations of Hb variants with the performance traits can be sought as guiding information for further genetic improvement interventions in the chicken breeds under investigation. Further microsatellite marker-based genotyping is recommended to validate the higher morphometric values for HbAA genotypes and the better egg production for HbBB and HbAB genotypes.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this narrative review was to provide insights into the influence of the morphological characteristics of the anatomical structures of the upper jaw based on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) analysis on the immediate implant placement in this region. MATERIAL AND METHODS: To conduct this research, we used many electronic databases, and the resulting papers were chosen and analyzed. From the clinical point of view, the region of the anterior maxilla is specific and can be difficult for immediate implant placement. FINDINGS: Anatomical structures in the anterior maxilla, such as the nasopalatine canal and accessory canals, may limit and influence the implant therapy outcome. In addition to the aforementioned region, immediate implant placement in the posterior maxilla may be challenging for clinicians, especially in prosthetic-driven immediate implant placement procedures. Data presented within the recently published materials summarize the investigations performed in order to achieve more reliable indicators that may make more accurate decisions for clinicians. CONCLUSION: The possibility for immediate implant placement may be affected by the NPC shape in the anterior maxilla, while the presence of ACs may increase the incidence of immediate implant placement complications. The variations in IRS characteristics may be considered important criteria for choosing the implant properties required for successful immediate implant placement.

The complex systematics of the genus Sedum, the difficulties of its classification and the ambiguity of the concrete identification of the taxa brought about the need to implement a measurement system adaptable to field conditions, so as to facilitate the accuracy of data collection, avoiding the etiolation of samples and, therefore, the deterioration of the morphological structures subject to analysis. Thus, our study describes a digitization of the classic method of making measurements using millimeter paper, thus facilitating the subsequent statistical processing of quantifiable values. Depending on the number of pixels in the photos taken and the pixel/millimeter ratio, a variable measurement scale can be created depending on the size of the analyzed taxomes. The method used adds to the classic taxonomy, which is based on the analysis of morphological characteristics to determine the species of these succulent plants. The applicability of our method is shown by means of the example of an analysis performed on the flowers of the native species of the genus Sedum in the territory of Romania.

Chronic insomnia disorder (CID) is a multidimensional disease that may influence various levels of brain organization, spanning the macroscopic structural connectome to microscopic gene expression. However, the connection between genomic variations and morphological alterations in CID remains unclear. Here, we investigated brain structural changes in CID patients at the whole-brain level and whether these link to transcriptional characteristics. Brain structural data from 104 CID patients and 102 matched healthy controls (HC) were acquired to examine cortical structural alterations using morphometric similarity (MS) analysis. Partial least squares (PLS) regression and transcriptome data from the Allen Human Brain Atlas were used to extract genomes related to MS changes. Gene-category enrichment analysis (GCEA) was used to identify potential molecular mechanisms behind the observed structural changes. We found that CID patients exhibited MS reductions in the parietal and limbic regions, along with enhancements in the temporal and frontal regions compared to HCs (pFDR < .05). Subsequently, PLS and GCEA revealed that these MS alterations were spatially correlated with a set of genes, especially those significantly correlated with excitatory and inhibitory neurons and chronic neuroinflammation. This neuroimaging-transcriptomic study bridges the gap between cortical structural changes and the molecular mechanisms in CID patients, providing novel insight into the pathophysiology of insomnia and targeted treatments.

The development of biomaterials such as synthetic scaffolds for peripheral nerve regeneration requires a precise knowledge of the mechanical properties of the nerve in physiological-like conditions. Mechanical properties (Young's modulus, maximum stress and strain at break) for peripheral nerves are scarce and large discrepancies are observed in between reports. This is due in part to the absence of a robust testing device for nerves. To overcome this limitation, a custom-made tensile device (CMTD) has been built. To evaluate its reproducibility and accuracy, the imposed speed and distance over measured speed and distance was performed, followed by a validation using poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), a commercial polymer with established mechanical properties. Finally, the mechanical characterization of rodents (mice and rats) sciatic nerves using the CMTD was performed. Mouse and rat sciatic nerves Young's modulus were 4.57 ± 2.04 and 19.2 ± 0.86 MPa respectively. Maximum stress was 1.26 ± 0.56 MPa for mice and 3.81 ± 1.84 MPa for rats. Strain at break was 53 ± 17% for mice and 32 ± 12% for rats. The number of axons per sciatic nerve was found to be twice higher for rats. Statistical analysis of the measured mechanical properties revealed no sex-related trends, for both mice and rats (except for mouse maximum stress with p=0.03). Histological evaluation of rat sciatic nerve corroborated these findings. By developing a robust CMTD to establish the key mechanical properties (Young's modulus, maximum stress and strain at break) values for rodents sciatic nerves, our work represent an essential step toward the development of better synthetic scaffolds for peripheral nerve regeneration.

Scottish Fold cats (Felis catus, Linnaeus 1758) are one of the most well-known and popular cat breeds in the world, characterized by their folded ears attached to the head. Very frequently, cats fall prey of different trauma and accidents that can cause bone fractures especially in the metapodial bones. The method of radiometry is used in veterinary practice to visualize and measure different parts of the animal skeleton. The aim of this study was to assess the linear parameters derived from radiographic images of the metacarpals and metatarsals in Scottish Fold cats and additionally detecting potential sexual dimorphism. Radiographic images of 24 adult Scottish Fold cats (12 male and 12 females) of different ages and weights were analysed. Six linear measurements of the metapodial bones were evaluated to investigate any differences between the sexes. The linear radiometric measurements of the five metacarpals (MC1-5) and the four metatarsals (MT2-5) bones were larger in male metapodial bones than that of female cats. The maximum length (Ml) of the MC1 and MC2 was statistically different between sex, respectively, (p = 0.001) and (p = 0.05). The others metacarpal bones were different in mostly all linear parameters but not statistically significant. The most significant differences between sexes were observed in the parameter of width proximal end (Wp) of MC1-3 (p = 0.001) and MC4 (p = 0.05). More statistical different was MT2 and less MT3. The linear parameter of Bd of the MT4 was the most different statistically between sex (p = 0.001). The results of the study will be useful in function of comparative anatomy, in veterinary clinical practice, in zoo archaeology and in the veterinary forensic investigation.

This study describes an unusual case of multiple myeloma that progressed to anaplastic multiple myeloma in the pleural fluid. The Wright-stained cytospin of the pleural fluid showed a predominant population of mononuclear plasma cells with pleomorphic nuclei, characterized by both small and large nuclei, which is typical of anaplastic multiple myeloma. However, there were also more binuclear plasma cells with pleomorphic nuclei. Morphometric analysis showed that the mean nuclear length was 1.9-fold and 2.3-fold higher in the large nuclei compared to the small nuclei for the mononuclear plasma cells and binuclear plasma cells, respectively (p<0.001). The patient received B cell maturation antigen chimeric antigen receptor T cell (CAR-T) therapy for relapsed disease, with a significant reduction of the serum monoclonal paraprotein level at day 51 post-therapy. Pathologists should be aware that pleomorphic binuclear plasma cells can be part of the morphologic spectrum in anaplastic multiple myeloma.

The neurocranium in birds provides valuable insights into their morphological diversity, including adaptations related to brain size, facial shaping, and environmental factors. This study analyzes the neurocranial shape characteristics and size of chickens with similar genetic backgrounds. By examining the neurocranial shape variation in chickens of the same age and sex, the study aims to understand the factors contributing to morphological diversity within this specific group. 3D geometric morphometrics was used to analyze 235 neurocrania from four chicken breeds. The analysis revealed significant differences in centroid size among the chicken breeds. The largest neurocranium centroid size was found in Sasso chickens., which were statistically separated from Atak-S. Additionally, centroid size effectively differentiates between Lohmann Brown and Lohmann Sandy chicken breeds. The most significant shape variation concerned the width of the rostral part of the frontal bone. However, according to the PC1 value, the shape variation was observed within rather than between groups. Lohmann Sandy chickens exhibited higher variability in neurocranial shape, suggesting greater shape diversity within this breed than others. As for shape analysis, the breeds showed closer similarity to each other. Lohmann Sandy chickens are characterized by positive PC1 value, with the rostral end of the frontal region inclined more ventrally, and a more extensive basioccipital region. Sasso chickens have a more dome-shaped middle part of the frontal region than other breeds. The study also identified the most significant shape variation among the study samples, observed at the rostral part of the frontal bone. These findings contribute to understanding the genetic and environmental influences shaping neurocranial morphology in chickens. Similar studies in different bird species and subspecies offer valuable insights into avian biology and adaptation.

The aim of this study was to test the morphometric features affecting 20-m sprint performance in children at the first level of primary education using machine learning (ML) algorithms. In this study, 130 male and 152 female volunteers aged between 6 and 11 years were included. After obtaining demographic information of the participants, skinfold thickness, diameter and circumference measurements, and 20-m sprint performance were determined. The study conducted three distinct experiments to determine the optimal ML technique for predicting outcomes. Initially, the entire feature space was utilized for training the ML models to establish a baseline performance. In the second experiment, only significant features identified through correlation analysis were used for training and testing the models, enhancing the focus on relevant predictors. Lastly, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was employed to reduce the feature space, aiming to streamline model complexity while retaining data variance. These experiments collectively aimed to evaluate different feature selection and dimensionality reduction techniques, providing insights into the most effective strategies for optimizing predictive performance in the given context. The correlation-based selected features (Age, Height, waist circumference, hip circumference, leg length, thigh length, foot length) has produced a minimum Mean Squared Error (MSE) value of 0.012 for predicting the sprint performance in children. The effective utilization of correlation analysis in the selection of relevant features for our regression model suggests that the features selected exhibit robust linear associations with the target variable and can be relied upon as predictors.

A new troodontid dinosaur, Hypnovenator matsubaraetoheorum gen. et sp. nov., is described based on an articulated postcranial skeleton recovered from the fluvial deposits of the Albian Ohyamashimo Formation of the Sasayama Group in Tambasasayama City, Hyogo Prefecture, Japan. Hypnovenator is distinguished from other troodontids by four autapomorphies and a combination of additional features. Our phylogenetic analysis positions Hypnovenator as the oldest and one of the most basal troodontines, forming a clade with Gobivenator mongoliensis. The discovery of Hypnovenator suggests that small-bodied maniraptorans with a sleeping posture were common not only in environments with volcanic and eolian events or alluvial systems but also in fluvial systems. Geometric morphometric analysis of manual ungual phalanges shows that manual ungual phalanges I and III of Hypnovenator exhibit considerable morphological variation but are functionally similar, which differs from those of non-troodontine troodontids, reflecting the transition of manual motion within Troodontinae. Hypnovenator also has mosaic features in the pes related to cursoriality. This study reveals that asymmetrical arctometatarsus occurred by the Albian, and some morphological changes, such as shorter digit IV than digit III and non-ungual phalanges of digits III with roller joints and digit IV with weakly ginglymoid articulation, arose during the early Late Cretaceous.

Skin represents the main barrier against the external environment, but also plays a role in human relations, as one of the prime determinants of beauty, resulting in a high consumer demand for skincare-related pharmaceutical products. Given the importance of skin aging in both medical and social spheres, the present research aims to characterize microscopic changes in human skin composition due to intrinsic aging (as opposed to aging influenced by external factors) via histological analysis of a photoprotected body region. Samples from 25 autopsies were taken from the periumbilical area and classified into four age groups: group 1 (0-12 years), group 2 (13-25 years), group 3 (26-54 years), and group 4 (≥ 55 years). Different traditional histological (hematoxylin-eosin, Masson's trichrome, orcein, toluidine, Alcian blue, and Feulgen reaction) and immunohistochemical (CK20, CD1a, Ki67, and CD31) stains were performed. A total of 1879 images photographed with a Leica DM3000 optical microscope were morphometrically analyzed using Image ProPlus 7.0 for further statistical analysis with GraphPad 9.0. Our results showed a reduction in epidermis thickness, interdigitation and mitotic indexes, while melanocyte count was raised. Papillary but not reticular dermis showed increased thickness with aging. Specifically, in the papillary layer mast cells and glycosaminoglycans were expanded, whereas the reticular dermis displayed a diminution in glycosaminoglycans and elastic fibers. Moreover, total cellularity and vascularization of both dermises were diminished with aging. This morphometric analysis of photoprotected areas reveals that intrinsic aging significantly influences human skin composition. This study paves the way for further research into the molecular basis underpinning these alterations, and into potential antiaging strategies.

Insulin dysregulation (ID), core to equine metabolic syndrome, may present without obesity. Testing for ID risk is commonly based on breed and obese phenotype but might be valuable for non-obese stock-type horses. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of ID in non-obese stock-type horses and evaluate if morphometric neck measurements (MNM) correlate with ID. Sixty-two, non-obese (BCS 5, range 2.5-6/9) stock-type horses were assessed for MNM: neck circumference at 25%, 50% (NC50), and 75% (NC75) length, and crest height. An oral sugar test (OST; 0.15 mL/kg BW corn syrup) was performed with blood taken pre- and 60 min post-OST for insulin (PREI, POSTI) and glucose (PREG, POSTG). Insulin dysregulation was defined as insulin concentration > 45 µIU/mL POSTI. Three of 62 horses were ID (4.8%; 95% CI 1.0%-13.5%). Horses with ID had greater PREG (121.0 ± 7.56 vs. 105.3 ± 1.72 mg/dL; LS means ± SEM; P = 0.04) and PREI (15.7 ± 2.63 vs. 10.5 ± 0.59 µIU/mL; P = 0.05) than normal responders. Mares had greater PREI than geldings (11.7 ± 0.76 vs. 9.4 ± 0.89 µIU/mL; P = 0.04). Stepwise regression indicated a weak relationship with crest height and POSTG (y = 51.27 + (0.88 x NC50); R2 = 0.09; P = 0.02). Post-glucose correlated with NC50 (r = 0.30; P = 0.04) and NC75 (r = 0.29; P = 0.03). This study showed 4.8% of non-obese horses had ID, warranting testing irrespective of phenotype, but only a weak association between MNM and POSTG was found.
