RESUMEN

A singly fed reconfigurable circular loop antenna is proposed for millimeter-wave (mmWave) communication systems. This antenna's distinctive feature lies in its capacity to adjust both polarization and bandwidth characteristics, a capability made possible by the strategic integration of two PIN diodes. These diodes are engineered to function in various modes, allowing for three distinct polarization states and accommodating two distinct bandwidths. A meticulous alignment of these PIN diodes enables the utilization of a single DC bias network as a highly effective RF choke, which simplifies the design and reduces the associated losses. Additionally, a planar biasing network that consists of coplanar strip-lines (CPS) has been employed eliminating the need for lumped elements. The simple and totally planar configuration offers a choice of right-hand circularly polarized (RHCP) radiation or left-hand circularly polarized (LHCP) radiation at 28 GHz. This is accompanied by impedance matching and axial ratio (AR) bandwidths of 12.9% and 8%, respectively, over the same frequency range with a gain of 7.5 dBic. Moreover, when the PIN diodes are unbiased, the antenna offers linear polarization (LP) over two narrow bandwidths at 27 GHz and 29 GHz featuring a maximum gain of 7.2 dBic. Therefore, the proposed configuration offers three operating modes: wide-band RHCP, wide-band-LHCP, and LP over dual narrow bands. Significantly, simulated results closely align with the measured outcomes, affirming the robustness and accuracy of this design.

RESUMEN

The instrumentation of a giant loop antenna dedicated to environmental measurement, on a unique scientific site and intended to be open to the scientific community is presented. An open-source, low-cost electronic system has been designed, developed, and deployed in order to meet the need for reliability and flexibility imposed respectively by the harsh environment and the scientific objectives. The system's architecture is based on the simultaneous association of five Arduino boards piloted together by a Raspberry Pi which also controls the measurement devices. The setup is therefore automated, pilotable, and remotely reprogrammable. Special attention was paid to its hardware and software reliability. These have been proven efficient over more than two years of operation. Several scientific conference publications have already proven the feasibility of the measurement principle (Dezord et al., 2021; Dezord et al., 2022; Dezord et al., 2022). This article gives previously unpublished details regarding the electronic setup.

RESUMEN

A miniaturized wideband loop antenna for terrestrial digital television (DTV) and ultra-high definition (UHD) TV applications is proposed. The original wideband loop antenna consists of a square loop, two circular sectors to connect the loop with central feed points, and a 75 ohm coplanar waveguide (CPW) feed line inserted in the lower circular sector. The straight side of the square loop is replaced with a multiple half-circular-ring-based loop structure. Horizontal slits are appended to the two circular sectors in order to further reduce the antenna size. A tapered CPW feed line is also employed in order to improve impedance matching. The experiment results show that the proposed miniaturized loop antenna operates in the 460.7-806.2 MHz frequency band for a voltage standing wave ratio less than two, which fully covers the DTV and UHD TV bands (470-771 MHz). The proposed miniaturized wideband loop antenna has a length reduction of 21.43%, compared to the original loop antenna.

RESUMEN

In this paper, impedance matching enhancement of a grounded wearable low-profile loop antenna is investigated using a high-impedance surface (HIS) structure. The wearable loop antenna along with the HIS structure is maintained low-profile, making it a suitable candidate for healthcare applications. The paper starts with investigating, both numerically and experimentally, the effects of several textile parameters on the performance of the wearable loop antenna. The application of impedance enhancement of wearable grounded loop antenna with HIS structure is then demonstrated. Numerical full-wave simulations are presented and validated with measured results. Unlike the grounded wearable loop antenna alone with its degraded performance, the wearable loop antenna with HIS structure showed better matching performance improvement at the 2.45 GHz-band. The computed overall far-field properties of the wearable loop antenna with HIS structure shows good performance, with a maximum gain of 6.19 dBi. The effects of bending the wearable loop antenna structure with and without HIS structure as well as when in close proximity to a modeled human arm are also investigated, where good performance was achieved for the case of the wearable antenna with the HIS structure.

RESUMEN

This paper proposes a novel miniaturized rectangular loop antenna sensor consisting of a multiturn wire and a cuboid ferrite core. The lateral surface of the ferrite core is tightly wound by the multiturn wire. To verify its feasibility, the antenna sensor is fabricated, and the antenna factor (AF) levels are measured using the three-antenna method from the very low frequency (VLF) to the high-frequency (HF) bands. The measured AF levels are 31.8 dB (with a covering plastic case) and 33.1 dB (without a covering plastic case) at 30 kHz. In addition, the proposed antenna is employed in the shielding effectiveness measurement of a small commercial cabinet to observe its suitability for shielding effectiveness (SE) measurement of small shielding enclosures. The SE values averaged over the frequency range from 10 kHz to 3 MHz are 4.1 dB and 12 dB in the horizontal and vertical polarizations, respectively.

RESUMEN

This paper describes a simplified model and a generic model of high-frequency current transformer (HFCT) sensors. By analyzing the models, a universal charge estimation method based on the double time integral of the measured voltage is inferred. The method is demonstrated to be valid irrespective of HFCT sensor, assuming that its transfer function can be modelled as a combination of real zeros and poles. This paper describes the mathematical foundation of the method and its particularities when applied to measure nanosecond current pulses. In practice, the applicability of the method is subjected to the characteristics and frequency response of the sensor and the current pulse duration. Therefore, a proposal to use the double time integral or the simple time integral of the measured voltage is described depending upon the sensor response. The procedures used to obtain the respective calibration constants based on the frequency response of the HFCT sensors are explained. Two examples, one using a HFCT sensor with a broadband flat frequency response and another using a HFCT sensor with a non-flat frequency response, are presented.

RESUMEN

In this paper, we propose a bi-directional loop antenna array using magic cube origami. The proposed antenna array consists of three one-wavelength loop antenna elements with series feeding. Each loop antenna is realized on a single magic cube, and three cubes are connected in series to form the array. The three cubes can be easily folded and unfolded due to being constructed in the form of a magic cube origami. Antenna volume can be minimized for high mobility by folding the array, which radiates a bi-directional pattern with full volume when unfolded. The proposed antenna was designed at 1.39 GHz. When the single antenna is realized on the single cube, the peak gain is 4.03 dBi. The peak gain increased to 5.2 and 5.53 dBi with two and three antennas, respectively. Half-power beam width (HPBW) with three antenna elements decreased to 40° from 360° compared to the HPBW with the single antenna. The proposed antenna performance was assessed numerically and experimentally.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: A hyperthermia system using a folded loop antenna applicator at 27 MHz for soft tissue treatment was investigated both theoretically and experimentally to evaluate its clinical value. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The electromagnetic analysis of a 27-MHz folded loop antenna for use in human tissue was based on a customised software tool and led to the design and development of the proposed hyperthermia system. The system was experimentally validated using specific absorption rate (SAR) distribution estimations through temperature distribution measurements of a muscle tissue phantom after electromagnetic exposure. Various scenarios for optimal antenna positioning were also performed. RESULTS: Comparison of the theoretical and experimental analysis results shows satisfactory agreement. The SAR level of 50% reaches 8 cm depth in the tissue phantom. Thus, based on the maximum observed SAR values that were of the order of 100 W/kg, the antenna specified is suitable for deep tumour heating. CONCLUSIONS: Theoretical and experimental SAR distribution results as derived from this study are in agreement. The proposed folded loop antenna seems appropriate for use in hyperthermia treatment, achieving proper planning and local treatment of deeply seated affected areas and lesions.

RESUMEN

The longwall method of mining in underground coal seams is very efficient in uniform seams, but coal seam anomalies can make the method unprofitable and unsafe. This paper describes the theoretical basis for detection of coal seam anomalies using medium frequency (MF) radio transmission over paths on the order of 200 m in length. The key to the method is the sensitivity of the attenuation rate of the coal seam mode of propagation to changes in the coal seam parameters, such as height or electrical conductivity. From a large number of transmission paths, the principles of tomography can be used to reconstruct an image of the seam.
