RESUMEN

This study examines the impact of institutional shifts on the strategic choices of Russian firms. It proposes and tests hypotheses of how a shift from a weak to a strong institutional context is likely to affect firms' knowledge accumulation, absorptive capacities and internalisation of operations. Using discriminant analysis, the econometric investigation demonstrates that firms tend to allocate greater resources towards improving their knowledge and absorptive capacity and make more efforts to vertically integrate-in line with improvements in the institutional environment. These investments ensure the survivability and competitiveness of firms in the long term. Furthermore, the study demonstrates that the long-term strategic orientation of firms goes hand in hand with rising resource allocations by the nation-state towards economic development. The findings align with the institutionalist political economy views that institutions are the ultimate overseers that allow the market to operate efficiently, especially in emerging market environments. The paper is also instructive to other developing economies about the need to strengthen their institutional environments, which supports the long-term orientation of firms and has a positive impact on economic development. The analysis does not take into account the impact of sanctions on Russian business and economy, post the annexation of Crimea and the armed conflict with Ukraine. Nor does it consider the impact of COVID-19 on the economy. As such, the study attempts to constitute an untainted comparison of two paths of transition on Russian firms-shock therapy, vis-à-vis, an institutional political economy approach.

RESUMEN

This paper presents the GLOBALINTO Input-Output Intangibles Database, that was constructed in the context of the Horizon2020 project 'GLOBALINTO: Capturing the value of intangible assets in micro data to promote the EU's Growth and Competitiveness'. The database is formulated under an input-output framework and treats intangibles as producer services that derive from certain knowledge producing sectors in the economy (namely J62-J63 - Computer programming, consultancy, and related activities; Information service activities, M72 - Scientific research and development, M73 - Advertising and market research, and N - Administrative and support service activities) and embeds them withing the context of global value chains (GVCs) as traded knowledge intermediates. Data include intangibles related variables for 56 2-digit NACE Rev. 2/ ISIC Rev. 4 sectors from the EU-27 and the UK and are complemented with export variables and R&D related statistics from Eurostat for the period 2000-2014. An application of the dataset can be found in the research article 'Intangibles, innovation, and sector specialization in global value chains: A case study on the EU's and the UK's manufacturing industries' [1] .

RESUMEN

The way in which managers perceive their organization's intellectual and social capital has an impact in shaping their choices and how they lead change. The aim of the study was to explore how the managers of a trade union framed the role of its intangible assets in a context of organizational change. A qualitative approach was used; 30 semi-structured interviews were conducted with the leaders of a trade union and then analyzed using the method of thematic analysis. Particular attention was paid to the metaphors the managers used to narrate change. The hypothesis underlying this approach is that metaphors are a meaningful resource in that they can convey how organization and its intangible assets are framed. In the results, three "root metaphors" are illustrated-the trade union seen either as a system of domination, an organism, or a culture-together with the consequences of each of these images for the perception and value attributed to the trade union's intangible assets. In conclusion, implications for changing management practices and for further research are discussed.

RESUMEN

Environmental, social and governance ("ESG") scores have been widely touted as indicators of share price resilience during the COVID-19 crisis. Contrary to this conventional wisdom, we present robust evidence that once industry affiliation, market-based measures of risk and accounting-based measures of performance, financial position and intangibles investments have been controlled for, ESG offers no such positive explanatory power for returns during the COVID crisis. Specifically, ESG is insignificant in fully specified returns regressions for each of the Q1 2020 COVID market crisis period and for the full COVID year of 2020. By contrast, a measure of the firm's stock of investments in internally generated intangible assets is an economically and statistically significant positive determinant of returns during each of the Q1 market implosion and full 2020 COVID year periods. Our results are robust to alternative measures of returns, as well as for using Refinitiv, Refinitiv II and MSCI data to capture ESG performance. We conclude that ESG did not immunize stocks during the COVID-19 crisis, but those investments in intangible assets did.

RESUMEN

Through reviewing extant literature, this conceptual paper is aimed to improve the understanding of the intervening mechanisms that influence the relationship between intangible assets (IAs) and organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) to improve the performance of contemporary knowledge-dependent organizations. The authors believe this to be the first attempt to bring four major components of IAs together and look at their relationship with OCB. This helps to create awareness of the necessity of matching key resources with appropriate behavior to improve organizations' competitive advantages. The proposed model and propositions showed relationships between IAs and OCB mediated and moderated by work engagement and perceived organizational support, respectively. Moreover, this paper suggests the need for integrated multi-level studies to strengthen the links between critical resources and behaviors to put the learning organization on the right growth track. Future research is suggested on new conceptualizations of IAs, such as spiritual capital, as well as the relationship of IAs with other typologies of OCB.

RESUMEN

Nonprofit organizations (NPOs) promote citizens' participation in community life through several different kinds of organizations: some more informal (such as associations and volunteering groups), others more formal or public (such as charities and foundations). This heterogeneity, as well as the well-known peculiarities of NPOs when compared to profit and public ones, poses new challenges to their management. In the constant need to find balance between financial constraints and social value, a main resource for NPOs is the management of intangible assets, such as knowledge, positive relationships within the organization and with users, external image, loyalty and commitment, and so on. From the literature on for-profit organizations, it is well known that proper management of intangible assets improves an organization's sustainable competitive advantage, not only by enhancing its members' affiliation and commitment but even by enhancing their productivity. This is particularly relevant when taking into account the main role of volunteers in the third sector. Volunteers, indeed, show different job attitudes and organizational behaviors than paid employees, as their membership and accountability are less formalized and they frequently lack a proper teamwork, due to the high volunteer turnover. At the same time, from the managers point of view, managing volunteers and paid workers require higher skills and competencies than managing human resources in for-profit organizations. Developing these reflections and considerations, we aim to conduct a systematic literature review on the association between intangible assets and performance in NPOs. The literature will be conducted following the indications from the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) statement. It provides an evidence-based minimum set of items to be included in the review, as well as a workflow to properly manage and choose the papers to be included. The authors conducted the research using EBSCO, ProQuest, and Scopus databases.

RESUMEN

Healthcare systems increasingly use business models that focus on tangible assets such as finances and facilities. Yet intangible assets, such as values, relationships and human capital, remain critical for understanding the worth of interprofessional healthcare education and collaboration. We implemented a novel interprofessional collaborative pilot exercise to explore the feasibility and usefulness of an Asset Inventory-using KJ methodology and an appreciative inquiry perspective-to identify and better understand intangible assets and their value in interprofessional healthcare education/training organizations, for planning, and as a first step toward informing strategic decision-making. Twenty-eight faculty physicians, nurses, psychosocial and family faculty, educators, health services researchers and administrative staff participated. Participants identified intangible assets in five categories: Philosophy/Mission, Practice/Practical Strategies, Human Capital, Scholarship/Research Productivity, and Partnerships. Participants reported a greater understanding of intangible assets, and increased enthusiasm, organizational confidence, and stakeholder ownership for healthcare education programs. While this study is preliminary, the Asset Inventory may prove useful to enhance understanding of the importance of intangible assets within interprofessional healthcare education/training organizations, to inform planning and decision-making, to identify and foster interprofessional collaborative capacity across clinical and training settings, and to leverage intangible assets in today's rapidly changing business-focused healthcare systems.

Credit unions have been a key element for recent agri-food industry and rural development. However, whereas there are practical applications implemented in banks, there are rarely empirical studies about this legal form of banking system. Nowadays, the financial crisis is affecting the development of certain industries and territories. Credit unions, as singular financial organizations, have intangible elements with peculiar characteristics. These characteristics must be studied to manage their competitive advantages and provide management with relevant information for decision making. Through the Delphi analysis, this article will identify the singularities of human capital in these entities. The singularities of the credit union sector show that human resources are potentially more determined to adopt a strong corporate culture and invest more in training. On the other hand, main deficits of credit unions will be their aptitudes and lesser capacities, academic level or low investment in training.
