RESUMEN

This study aimed to assess the impact of enriching argan oil (AO) (Argania spinosa L.) using the maceration technique with thyme (Thymus vulgaris L.) and oregano (Origanum vulgare L.) leaves (TL and OL) at two proportions (5 and 10%). The oxidative stability of the control and enriched oils was examined under accelerated conditions at a temperature of 60 °C for 120 days (4 months). Quality indices (Free fatty acids (FFA), peroxide value (PV), p-anisidine value (p-AV), ultraviolet absoptions (K232 and K270), Rancimat test, fatty acids composition, sensory attributes, simple phenolic contents (SPC) and antioxidant activity (DPPH•) were determined. As a simple, inexpensive and green method, enrichment by maceration yielded advantageous results. Compared to the control (68.05 ± 1.10 mg GAE/kg), the SPC significantly increased in enriched oils reaching notably 250.9 ± 9.1 mg GAE/kg when adding 10% of TL. Also, the enriched oil samples showed the lowest PV, p-AV and ultraviolet absorptions compared with the control. However, no noticeable changes were reported in fatty acids composition and iodine value. In terms of sensory attributes, enrichment by maceration masked the rancid odour caused by oxidation. These scientific discoveries inherently yield economic advantages by enabling the diversification of product offerings, simultaneously catering to a broader market seeking high-quality oils infused with herbs, including both AO and aromatic plants.

RESUMEN

Peanuts are highly valued for their abundance of essential nutrients and health-promoting phenolic compounds. Peanut press cake, an inexpensive and underutilized agro-industrial by-product of oil production, is typically discarded or used as animal feed. This study investigated the influence of thermal processing and varietal disparities on the nutritional composition, phenolic content, and biological properties of peanut flour and oilcake flour, aiming to enhance their value as food ingredients. The findings showed that roasting significantly increased the oil (9.98 ± 0.11-44.13 ± 0.10 %), ash (1.28 ± 0.01-5.45 ± 0.05 %), carbohydrate contents (0.90 ± 0.01-28.09 ± 0.28 %), and energy value (406.69 ± 0.09-609.13 ± 1.08 kcal/100 g), along with the total polyphenol content (28.64 ± 0.19-62.79 ± 1.18 mg GAE/g), total flavonoid content (4.20 ± 0.07-18.35 ± 0.06 mg QE/g) and antioxidant activity in both peanut flour and its oilcake. Conversely, it led to a reduction in the moisture (1.48 ± 0.09-6.25 ± 0.15 %) and protein content (49.50 ± 0.05-54.24 ± 0.01 %). Notable variations were found between the two peanut varieties in terms of these nutritional parameters. Elemental analysis unveiled significant discrepancies among peanut varieties and with roasting, with potassium (12,237.56 ± 101.36-14,513.34 ± 168.62 mg/kg) emerging as the predominant macro-element followed by phosphorus (6156.86 ± 36.19-8815.22 ± 130.70 mg/kg) and magnesium (3037.92 ± 13.87-4096.44 ± 8.54 mg/kg), while zinc (53.98 ± 0.61-81.77 ± 0.44 mg/kg) predominated among the microelements. Moreover, peanut and oilcake flours demonstrated antibacterial activity against several bacteria. It can be inferred that roasted peanut and oilcake flours offer substantial nutritional value, making them promising candidates for addressing protein-energy malnutrition and serving as valuable ingredients in developing new food products.

RESUMEN

This study examines the effect of UV irradiation on the oxidation stability of Linum usitatissimum oil, presenting possible changes in the phytochemical profile due to photo-oxidation. GC-MS analysis of the oils identified 11 fatty acid compounds with a high percentage of unsaturated fatty acids, the most important of which is α-linolenic acid (ALA), known as omega-3 (48.88 %), also significant profiles of phytosterol and tcocopherol isomers rich in ß-Sitosterol and γ-tocopherols respectively. As well as physicochemical properties such as free fatty acids (FFA %), peroxide value (PV) and iodine value (IV), and nutritional indexes that determine the significant changes observed during the oxidation process, the most important of which is the progressive increase in acidity, peroxide, conjugated dienes and trienes and degrees of unsaturation over 8 h of UV exposure. High levels of carotenoids and phenolic compounds (TPC) protect and enhance oil quality in the face of irradiation, so a significantly small difference is observed between irradiated and non-irradiated oil during photo-oxidation.

RESUMEN

Arrowroot starch (AS)-based films potential is influenced by its low-cost processing and high transparency packaging material but low tensile strength; hence, AS was blended with kappa-carrageenan (KC) to improve mechanical properties of AS-based films and enhance its potential use in food packaging or coating applications. AS-KC-based films were characterized based on structural, physicomechanical, thermal, pasting properties, and coating application in sweet cherry. The films demonstrated high tensile strength from 3.2 to 29.4 MPa and low elongation properties from 160.3 % to 1.9 %. Moreover, AS/KC films exhibited peak viscosities of 18.7 to 34.8 RVU, and thermal analysis depicted lower weight losses (59-45 %) compared to AS-based films (62 %). In addition, sweet cherry samples coated with AS/KC films and stored at 20 °C for 15 days depicted lower weight losses (26.6 %) compared to non-coated samples (>41 %), which indicated the potential use of the film's coating application in extending the shelf life and quality of fresh fruits.

RESUMEN

Developing gelled environmentally friendly dispersions in oil media is a hot topic for many applications. This study aimed to investigate the production of electrospun cellulose triacetate (CTA) nanofibers and to explore their potential application as a thickening agent for castor oil. The key factors in the electrospinning process, including the intrinsic properties of CTA solutions in methylene chloride (DCM)/ethanol (EtOH), such us the shear viscosity, surface tension, and electrical conductivity, were systematically studied. The impact of the CTA fiber concentration and the ratio of DCM/EtOH on the rheological properties of the gel-like dispersions in castor oil was then investigated. It was found that dispersions with a non-Newtonian response and above a critical concentration (5 wt.%), corresponding to approximately 2-2.5 times the entanglement concentration, are required to produce defect-free nanofibers. The average fiber diameter increased with CTA concentration. Further, the morphology and texture of the electrospun nanofibers are influenced by the ratio of solvents used. The rheological properties of dispersions are strongly influenced by the concentration and surface properties of nanofibers, such as their smooth or porous textures, which allow their modulation. Compared to other commonly used thickeners, such as synthetic polymers and metal soaps, CTA electrospun nanofibers have a much higher oil structuring capacity. This work illustrated the potential of using CTA nanofibers as the foundation for fabricating gel-like dispersions in oil media, and thus exerting hierarchical control of rheological properties through the use of a nanoscale fabrication technique.

RESUMEN

Water crisis around the world leads to a growing interest in emerging contaminants (ECs) that can affect human health and the environment. Research showed that thousands of compounds from domestic consumers, such as endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs), personal care products (PCPs), and pharmaceuticals active compounds (PhAcs), could be found in wastewater in concentration mostly from ng L-1 to µg L-1. However, generally, wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are not designed to remove these ECs from wastewater to their discharge levels. Scientists are looking for economically feasible biotreatment options enabling the complete removal of ECs before discharge. Microalgae cultivation in domestic wastewater is likely a feasible approach for removing emerging contaminants and simultaneously removing any residual organic nutrients. Microalgal growth rate and contaminants removal efficiency could be affected by various factors, including light intensity, CO2 addition, presence of different nutrients, etc., and these parameters could greatly help make microalgae treatment more efficient. Furthermore, the algal biomass harvests could be repurposed to produce various bulk chemicals such as sustainable aviation fuel, biofuel, bioplastic, and biochar; this could significantly enhance the economic viability. Therefore, this review summarizes the microalgae-based bioprocess and their mechanisms for removing different ECs from different wastewaters and highlights the different strategies to improve the ECs removal efficiency. Furthermore, this review shows the role of different ECs in biomass profile and the relevance of using ECs-treated microalgae biomass to produce green products, as well as highlights the challenges and future research recommendations.

RESUMEN

Chitosan, as a proficient biopolymer, has enormous potential as an ecofriendly corrosion inhibitor (CI), but their limited solubility restricts practical applications. Herein, an eco-friendly and water-soluble chitosan salt (CS) was utilized as a green CI on N80 pipeline steel in artificial sea water. Several structural and surface analytical tools were engaged in describing the characteristics of novel CS polymer. The corrosion inhibition efficiencies of CS on steel at different concentrations were investigated through gravimetric, conventional and advanced electrochemical techniques along with the surface analyses. Tafel polarization tests specified that CS performed as mixed-type CI with prevalent anodic inhibition characteristics. At a concentration of 1000 ppm, CS provided an inhibition efficiency (IE) of 96.68 %, following physiochemical adsorptions of CS on N80 surface validated by fitting Langmuir adsorption isotherm. However, the reductions in the values of IE at high temperature specified that the CS is the temperature dependent CIs. Scanning electrochemical microscopic evaluation confirmed the formation of thin CS inhibitors films with high electrochemical stability on N80 steel in saline. The performed surface characterizations on inhibited surfaces validated the adsorption of CS on the N80 surface by forming thin inhibitor film to obstruct metal corrosion. The theoretical simulation studies using molecular dynamics and density functional theory corroborated the experimentally obtained results.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The use of household disinfectants and cleaning products (HDCPs) may negatively impact asthma control, but studies remain scarce. Moreover, no study considered green products or wipes, increasingly used during home cleaning. OBJECTIVE: To assess the associations between the use of HDCPs, including disinfecting wipes and green products, and asthma control based on data from the French Web-based NutriNet-Santé cohort. METHODS: Using a standardized questionnaire (2018), we assessed asthma control (never asthma: reference; controlled: Asthma Control Test ≥ 20; uncontrolled: Asthma Control Test < 20) and the use of HDCPs, including 2 types of products (irritants and green products) and 2 application modes (sprays and disinfecting wipes). Cross-sectional associations of the frequency of weekly use of HDCPs at home with asthma control, adjusted for sex, age, smoking status, body mass index, and educational level were assessed by multinomial logistic regressions. RESULTS: Analyses were performed on 37,043 adults (mean age 47 y; 75% women; 62% with a weekly use of at least 1 HDCP). Strong associations were observed between weekly use of HDCPs and uncontrolled asthma. In particular, an almost daily use (4-7 d/wk) of irritants (odds ratio [OR] 2.81; 95% confidence interval [95% CI] 1.97-4.00) and green products (OR 2.40; 95% CI 1.70-3.39) as well as sprays (OR 2.69; 95% CI 1.97-3.68) and disinfecting wipes (OR 3.51; 95% CI 2.31-5.33) was associated with uncontrolled asthma. When not co-used with irritants and sprays, associations remained statistically significant for both disinfecting wipes and green products. CONCLUSIONS: Weekly use of HDCPs, including green products or wipes, was associated with uncontrolled asthma and should be considered by health practitioners in order to improve asthma control.

RESUMEN

To date, the utilization of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) fibers are only restricted to weak mechanical application such as wound dressing. Physically, CMC has a weak mechanical strength due to the high hydrophilicity trait. However, this flaw was saved by the extensive number of reactive functional groups, allowing this macromolecule to form linkages with chitosan to ensure its versatility. This work successfully fabricated CMC-chitosan fiber via dissolution, crosslinking, dry-jet wet-spinning extrusion, and coagulation processes. Chitosan was constituted with CMC fiber in two approaches, coating, and inclusion at various concentrations. Morphologically, chitosan incorporation has triggered agglomerations and roughness toward CMC fibers (CMCF). Chemically, the interaction between CMC and chitosan was proved through FTIR analysis at peaks 1245 cm-1 (ECH covalent crosslinking), while 3340 cm-1 and 1586 cm-1 were due to ionic and hydrogen bonding. The result from analysis showed that at higher chitosan concentrations, the chitosan-included CMC fiber (CMCF-I) and chitosan-coated CMC fiber (CMFC) were mechanically enhanced (up to 86.77 and 82.72 MPa), thermally more stable (33 % residual mass), and less hydrophilic compared to the plain CMCF. The properties of CMC-chitosan fibers have opened up vast possible applications, especially as a reinforcement in a watery medium such as a hydrogel.

RESUMEN

Ecolabel policy has become an important strategy to encourage the consumption of green products throughout the world, contributing to sustainable development which is an inevitable choice for human society. Considering the manufacturer's reputation, consumer's environmental awareness, and effects of ecolabel certification on product demand, this study proposes several Stankelberg game models containing one manufacturer and one retailer to compare the optimal decisions and the impacts on the green supply chain with/without ecolabel certification, where four different scenarios are investigated in the centralized and decentralized situations. The results indicate that the ecolabel policy only functions below a threshold associated with the consumer's environmental awareness, which is higher in the decentralized situation. On the contrary, the optimal ecolabel standard in the centralized decision-making situation is higher than that in the decentralized ones if maximizing the environmental benefit. For the manufacturer, only when producing products as the ecolabel standard can it get the optimal profit. Finally, a wholesale price contract with the manufacturer's reputation is proposed, which improves the product's green degree and the environmental benefit to the optimal level in a decentralized supply chain.

RESUMEN

Abstract The objective of this study was to compare three models: the theory of reasoned action (TRA), the theory of planned behavior (TPB), and its extended form (ETPB), to predict the intention of Chilean consumers for purchasing green products. Five hundred people were surveyed, establishing an inter-rater reliability analysis, and a discriminant, convergent and construct validity using three structural equation models (SEM). The results showed that the ETPB model is useful to explain the consumption behavior intention for green products based on a triple bottom line, whose main contribution is the indirect effect of EC on the model. The study found that of the three variables, PBC was the strongest predictor of purchase intention, followed by attitude. In conclusion, both the ETPB model and the green products purchase intention instrument contribute to broaden the studies about consumer behavior in sustainable marketing in Chile.

Bacterial infections are a serious threat to human health, and the rapid emergence of bacterial resistance caused by the abuse of antibiotics exacerbates the seriousness of this problem. Effectively utilizing natural products to construct new antimicrobial strategies is regarded as a promising way to suppress the rapid development of bacterial resistance. In this paper, we fabricated a new type of natural antibacterial patch by using a natural active substance (allicin) as an antibacterial agent and the porous structure of the white pulp of pomelo peel as a scaffold. The antibacterial activity and mechanisms were systematically investigated by using various technologies, including the bacteriostatic circle, plate counting, fluorescence staining, and a scanning electron microscope. Both gram-positive and negative bacteria can be effectively killed by this patch. Moreover, this natural antibacterial patch also showed significant anti-skin infection activity. This study provides a green approach for constructing efficient antibacterial patches.

RESUMEN

This study aims to explore whether consumers' attention to companies' green marketing communication influences their green purchase behaviour. It also analyses the importance of consumers' characteristics, namely gender, education, and green attitudes, in their attention to companies' green marketing communication. An online survey was carried out on the population residing in Portugal over 18 years of age, allowing us to collect 690 valid responses. Data analysis techniques including descriptive analyses, parametric and non-parametric tests, linear correlation, and regression analysis were used. The achieved results allow us to conclude that consumers are attentive to companies' green marketing communication. A strong correlation between consumers' attention to companies' green marketing communication and green purchasing behaviour was identified. The results also confirm that individuals with higher educational levels and green attitudes and females are the most attentive to companies' green marketing communication.

RESUMEN

In the last few decades, humans have consumed more resources than in all of previous history. Hence, we are living in times in which the topic of environmental protection is a global concern. The paper aims to conduct a systematic literature review on consumer behavior, as well as identifying the main factors that interfere with consumer behavior toward green products. A total of 37 studies were found and systematized using inclusion and exclusion criteria. The papers were selected only if they featured research on consumer perceptions of green products. Using this search strategy, a literature analysis was performed based on papers extracted from Web of Science, Emerald Insights, Springer Link, and Science Direct. As a result, various factors that influence consumer behavior toward green products were identified, such as social norms, natural environmental orientation, the company's perceived green image, green product characteristics, perceived risks and inconvenience of buying green products, perceived benefits of buying green products, institutional trust, sociodemographic characteristics, and consumer confidence. Even though completing a systematic literature review is not something new in academic research, the novelty of this paper is found in its theme: consumer behavior toward green products. Although the analyzed articles highlight quite varied reasons, the articles emphasize that the green products should take into account the needs, expectations, and perceptions of customers.

RESUMEN

Friction welding (FW) FW of dissimilar polymer rods is capable of manufacturing green products swiftly and economically. In this study, a green manufacturing technique of joining dissimilar polymer rods was proposed, and the effects of rotational speed on the joint characteristics of friction-welded dissimilar polymer rods fabricated by the fused deposition modeling process were investigated experimentally. The shore surface hardness test, impact test, three-point bending test, and differential scanning calorimetry analysis were carried out on the weld joints. The impact energy for FW of polylactic acid (PLA) and PLA, PLA and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS), PLA and PLA filled with glass fiber (GF), PLA and PLA filled with carbon fiber (CF), PLA and polycarbonate (PC), and PLA and polyamide (PA) rods can be increased by approximately 1.5, 1.5, 1.3, 1.3, 2.1, and 1.5 times by increasing the rotational speed from 330 rpm to 1350 rpm. The bending strength for FW of PLA and PLA, PLA and ABS, PLA and PLA filled with GF, PLA and PLA filled with CF, PLA and PC, and PLA and PA rods can be increased by approximately 1.3, 1.7, 1.3, 1.2, 1.2, and 1.2 times by increasing the rotational speed from 330 rpm to 1350 rpm. However, the surface hardness of the weld bead is not proportional to the rotational speed. The average surface hardness of the weld bead was increased by approximately 5% compared to the surface hardness of the welding base materials.

RESUMEN

The color of green product advertisements is an important factor affecting consumers' preferences. Based on the theory of the self-control system, this paper explores the influence mechanism and boundary conditions of green product ad color on consumers' preferences through three experiments. Experiment 1 tested the effect of advertisement color type (green/color) on consumers' preferences for green products. The results show that color ad can promote consumers' preferences for green products compared with green ad. Experiment 1 also analyzed the mediating role of the self-control system between advertisement color type (green/color) and consumers' preferences. Experiment 2 further clarified the boundary of the main effect. The effect of ad color (green/color) on consumers' preferences was only effective in the context of green products. Experiment 3 explored the moderating effect of green product type (egoistic/altruistic) on the main effect. The results show that only when the green product type is altruistic, the ad color type (green/color) can significantly affect consumers' preferences. This study is the first to link the ad color of green products with consumers' preferences. The findings confirm that the use of color ad for green products can elicit higher consumers' preferences than pure green ad, which enriches the research on the color of green product advertisements.

RESUMEN

Sustainable products are engineered to reduce environmental, ecological, and human costs of consumption. Not all consumers value sustainable products, however, and this poses negative societal implications. Using self-expansion theory as a guide, we explore how an individual's general sense of belonging-or the perception that one is accepted and valued by others in the broader social world-alters their responses to sustainable products. Five experimental studies and a field study demonstrate that individuals lower in belonging respond less favorably to sustainable products in terms of evaluations and willingness to pay than individuals higher in belonging. Process evidence shows that the extent to which individuals low in belonging perceive that collective, sustainable choices will impact them personally drives this result and that belonging does not impact responses to conventional (i.e., non-sustainable) products. However, perceiving a shared human experience-or that individuals share some important, basic similarities with all people-attenuates the negative effect of low belonging on responses to sustainable products for consumers both low and high in belonging. This research has significant implications for businesses and society given the growing sense of disconnect in modern society. RESUMEN

The unprecedented economic growth in recent decades has cultivated the exploitation of natural resources and over-consumption, leading to ecological deterioration and sustainability. The ever-increasing consumption in developing countries is creating a significant environmental strain. Thus, the industry and consumers' environmental issues and their harmful effects on human health have led to concerns among researchers, scientists, academic communities, and policymakers. The present work examines the impact of different consumption value factors on sustainable consumption behavior concerning consumer choice in Pakistan and China. A cross-sectional study is conducted, and data are collected through a primary source questionnaire. A sample of 431 respondents is chosen from different cities in Pakistan, and a sample of 342 respondents is selected from China. Estimation techniques like descriptive statistics, frequency distribution, multicollinearity, R square, independent sample t-test, the coefficient of correlation, and regression analysis are used for the data analysis. The comparative results show that knowledge values (KVs) and emotional values (EMVs) significantly influence the choice behavior of respondents toward environmentally friendly products both in Pakistan and China. In contrast, social values (SVs) and conditional values (CVs) show insignificant influence. Furthermore, functional values (FVs) are significant in Pakistan while insignificant in the context of China, and environmental values (EVs) are significant in China although insignificant in Pakistan with regard to sustainable consumption behavior.
