RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Internationalisation enhances students' understanding of social, cultural, and ethical differences, preparing them to be global-minded, socially accountable healthcare practitioners. Traditionally, internationalisation of education involves international student travel. Online tools provide opportunities for international, peer-driven learning and collaboration without costly travel. This research described the experiences of pharmacy students from South Africa (SA) and the United States (US) that participated in a virtual peer exchange project during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: The virtual peer exchange project allowed students in SA and the US to establish connections within the global pharmacy community and compare healthcare, pharmacy education, and pharmacy practice between the countries. Students engaged in facilitated dialogue through video recordings, video conferencing, and a group discussion board. Student introduction video comments and discussion board posts were thematically analysed. RESULTS: Twenty-one students participated in the pilot project that met some of the intentions and goals of internationalisation via a virtual platform. Two over-arching themes of Practice of Pharmacy and Pharmacy Education emerged from both the introduction video and discussion board comments. Students described lessons learned about similarities and differences in socioeconomic determinants of health as well as structure, functioning, and financing of the different healthcare systems. CONCLUSIONS: This project was a unique way to conduct exchange programmes via a virtual platform, and bypassed challenges of traditional exchange programmes. Through technology, more students in diverse geographic locations can be exposed to various perspectives and healthcare experiences with international students.

RESUMEN

⮚ Professional identity is an important component of practice change.⮚ Research on professional identity in pharmacy is limited, and this needs to change if we are to truly move practice in the 21st century.⮚ A unified professional identity is crucial for society to see pharmacists as healthcare providers.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: While the use of social media and blogging is an attractive and rapidly growing method to disseminate student reflections and information, the use of digital online methods of learning also require professional and ethical accountability. This commentary describes two approaches to using a checklist to promote the culturally sensitive, professional, and ethical use of social media platforms when students are expected to share their global pharmacy experiential experiences. COMMENTARY: Social media sites and online blogs have the potential to enhance student experiences and promote intercultural competence of participants due to their ease of use and familiarity. If social media applications are used by students as a means of gaining self-awareness of cultural differences or promotion of cultural knowledge and attitudes, a framework for how to approach this process methodically should be employed by educators. E-professionalism criteria, such as self-evaluation of implicit biases, appropriateness of visual images, and timing of online posting can be used to set expectations as part of pre-departure training and to ensure ethical dissemination of online student reflections. IMPLICATIONS: Pharmacy educators can assist students during global experiences abroad by improving their cultural competence when sharing reflections online. To ensure postings are culturally sensitive, ethical, and professional, consideration should be given to the deliberate use of a checklist that can assist with ensuring appropriateness of content and student reflections as part of a formal educational experience.

RESUMEN

Global engagement between schools and colleges of pharmacy in the United States and Africa is increasing. For a balanced and fruitful engagement, sensitivity towards the cultural and clinical needs of the people and professionals of the African region is critical. In this paper, we have divided the discussion into Southern, East, Central, and West Africa. General information about Africa, with unique aspects for individual subregions and countries, will be introduced. Stereotypes and misconceptions about the region and the people will also be discussed, along with recommendations for culturally sensitive engagement for pharmacy and other health care practitioners when hosting members from, or visiting this region. The paper is a resource for schools and colleges of pharmacy who are currently engaged or considering future outreach opportunities in Africa.

RESUMEN

Objective. To broaden pharmacy students' international perspectives through a teaching and learning method involving international comparison. Design. Four topics within a pharmacy law and practice course were taught in-person by collaborating faculty members representing two international perspectives (Australian and Canadian). The assessed learning objective was for students to be able to synthesize an international comparative analysis that reflected an international perspective. Assessment. Approximately 70% (n=44) of the class completed an online survey instrument that explored students' perceptions of their own learning. Six domains of inquiry represented in the questionnaire included knowledge development, international perspective, future prospects, personal enjoyment, assessment method, and overall learning experience. Quantitative and qualitative survey results reflected students' strong support for all statements of inquiry. Conclusions. The method involving international comparison, a classroom teaching collaboration and knowledge management using compare-contrast strategy positively influenced student perceptions in a range of ways and was effective in raising international perspectives in the pharmacy curriculum.

RESUMEN

Although the Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) is not intended to measure educational outcomes or institutional effectiveness, it may be a reliable and valid criterion to assess the quality or success of international pharmacy programs. This comprehensive review describes the evolution and historical milestones of the FPGEE, along with trends in structure, administration, and passing rates, and the impact of country of origin on participant performance. Similarities between the FPGEE and the Pharmacy Curriculum Outcomes Assessment (PCOA) are also explored. This paper aims to provide a global prospective and insight for foreign academic institutions into parameters for evaluating their students' educational capabilities.
