RESUMEN

Microplastics (MPs) are becoming increasingly common in freshwater ecosystems. Rotifers may involuntarily ingest MPs through non-selective filtration, thus causing non-real satiety, leading to adverse effects on their demography. Here, we evaluated the acute and chronic effects of MPs (30 µm) on two successive generations of Brachionus calyciflorus s.s. at 20 and 25 °C. Demographic variables and ingestion rates were compared in the absence and presence of microplastics (550 spheres mL-1). For the life table experiments, cohorts of twenty neonates were introduced into 20 mL medium with four replicates per treatment. Ingestion rates of the rotifer were tested at both test temperatures in the absence and presence of the microplastics in 20 mL containers with 1 ind. mL-1 per container. The rotifer population growth rates ranged from 0.55 to 1.05 d-1 depending on the treatment. MPs decreased the fecundity by 20-24 %. The average lifespan of rotifers exposed to MPs in the F0 generation was lower than that in the F1 generation at both temperatures, indicating that pre-exposure of mothers may offer some protection to the offspring. The population growth rate was higher at 25 °C. The ingestion rates were significantly lower in the presence of the microplastics. Our observations indicated that this strain of B. calyciflorus was better adapted to 20 °C; microplastics and higher test temperature resulted in a pronounced changes in the demographic variables of the rotifer.

RESUMEN

Introduction: the study sought to determine how the passage of values between generations is processed, in view of the exposure to conditions of deprivation to which these people are subjected, while they carry the obligation to ensure the minimum for their children but do not have the necessary resources. This raises the question of how it is possible to affirm a notion of right and wrong within this social framework. this study analysed the transmission of values between generations in groups of people in unfavourable economic and social conditions. Methods: this is a qualitative descriptive study, interviews were conducted through group meetings to discuss issues related to morals. It was carried out with grandparents, their children, and their grandchildren who are residents of a peripheral neighbourhood of the capital of São Paulo and live in restricted economic conditions and under the daily impact of violence. These discussions involved the three generational components of three families. Different arrangements were made that involved the same generational group in an initial meeting and, in another meeting, the mixture of different generations and different families responding to pre-established themes that involved moral dilemmas focused on the daily cultural and social life of these families. The theoretical basis of this study was psychoanalysis, using the concepts of Identification, Ego Ideal, Ideal Ego, Oedipus, and the dynamics underlying the insertion of the father in the Oedipal triad. Results: the grandfathers were ambiguous because they have a reference to a law of morals transcending space and time. Parents, realising the ambiguity of these grandparents in relation to reality, reformulate these moral questions, basing their convictions on a law that is established within the contingencies of everyday life and, therefore, changeable. The adolescent grandchildren perceive this ambiguity in the parents and in their speech. Conclusion: there is greater identification of moral standards among grandchildren and grandparents than between children and parents. The interviewed parents were ambiguous in the way they act and speak, with the transgenerational reproduction model being more guided between grandchildren and grandparents than in the sequential temporal generational sequence.

Despite the global upsurge of youth-fueled mass mobilization, the critical question of why new generations may be eager to join established movements is under-explored theoretically and empirically. This study contributes to theories of feminist generational renewal in particular. We examine the longer-term movement context and more proximate strategies that have enabled young women to participate steadily in a cycle of protest, alongside more seasoned activists, due to a process of feminist learning and affective bonding that we call "productive mediation." We focus on the Argentine Ni Una Menos (Not One Less) massive yearly march, which, since its onset in 2015, demonstrates that feminist activists have achieved the sought-after goal of fostering a highly diverse mass movement. These large-scale mobilizations against feminicide and gender-based violence gain much of their energy from a strong youth contingent, so much so that they have been called "the Daughters' Revolution." We show that these "daughters" have been welcomed by previous generations of feminist changemakers. Drawing on original qualitative research featuring 63 in-depth interviews with activists of different ages, backgrounds, and locations across Argentina, we find that long-standing movement spaces and brokers, as well as innovative frameworks of understanding, repertoires of action, and organizational approaches, help to explain why preexisting social movements may be attractive for young participants.

Abstract This article aims to reflect on the regulations on the ways of mothering to which women from different generations of the same family have been exposed in recent decades in the Brazilian context. To do this, it explores narratives of mothers and daughters; in order to analyze what they say about their motherhood and the discourses that permeated their practices. I start from the premise that the maternal figure is moralized through ideas of gender and generation, which also generate inequalities and resistance on the part of those who mother. The field material was produced between 2020 and 2022, through in-depth interviews with urban and middle-class women, who at the time were between 60-70 years old and 30-40 years old and were from different regions of Brazil. Recent literary works, more specifically novels and fiction written by women and about conflicts between mothers and daughters, will function as a background that integrates and also helps us interpret the findings of the field research. So, in the end, taking these relationships between women, we can reflect on the current configuration of the idea of generation, of care pacts and their ruptures, as well as - finally - on how the modulations of motherhood matter in these processes.

RESUMEN

Introduction: : Dental adhesion is responsible for the chemical processes of dentin-enamel union for a correct choice before its application in restorative treatments; it is important to know properly the generation to which it belongs, its properties, application techniques, etc. All this is to ensure success in the procedures to be performed. Currently, adhesive systems have evolved, and 8 generations are available in the market, each with a better-quality standard than the previous one. Objective: To identify which generation of the adhesive system is the most viable to be applied in direct dental restorative treatments. Materials and methods: We reviewed and compiled 133 articles published from 20 years ago to date. After analyzing them according to their clinical relevance, 88 were excluded, the remaining articles were reanalyzed, of which only those focused on describing the generations of adhesive systems applied in direct restorations were selected, leaving a total of 56 articles, which included clinical case reports. The Google Scholar search engine, SciELO and databases of interest, such as PubMed, Scopus and Medigraphic, were used, three reviewers independently performed the analysis and search of data, and the keywords were used; adhesive systems, generations of adhesive systems, evolution, and direct restorations. Results: : 56 articles were evaluated, according to their relationship with the subject and with the information previously sought, it was determined that the seventh generation of adhesive systems is the most viable to be applied in dental treatments, due to the improvements it presents in its characteristics, and the results with good prognosis mentioned by both dental professionals, as in research. Conclusion: The advancement of technology implies new knowledge; therefore, the effectiveness of adhesive systems has changed significantly. Scientific evidence has shown that seventh-generation adhesives are more effective in direct restorations.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Multiple dietary patterns have been recommended by the 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans for the prevention of cardiovascular disease (CVD). The adherence to these patterns and its relation with risk of CVD remain unclear in the US Hispanic/Latino population. OBJECTIVES: We aimed to evaluate 3 healthy eating patterns measured by 3 dietary pattern scores [the Alternate Mediterranean diet (aMED), the Healthy Eating Index (HEI)-2015, and the healthful Plant-based Diet Index (hPDI)] across different Hispanic/Latino backgrounds and generations. We further examined the associations of these dietary scores with incident CVD in US Hispanics/Latinos. METHODS: We included 10,293 adult participants of US Hispanics/Latinos of 6 backgrounds (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, Dominican, Central American, and South American), free of CVD or cancer at baseline, in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. Dietary pattern scores were derived at the baseline visit using two 24-h dietary recalls. The primary outcome was major incident CVD (n = 232), comprised of coronary heart disease and stroke, during an average 6-y follow-up. RESULTS: Mean levels of all 3 dietary scores were significantly different across the 6 Hispanic/Latino background groups (all P < 0.001), with the highest (i.e., healthiest) in those of Mexican background and lowest in those of Puerto Rican background. Compared with non-mainland-US-born Hispanics/Latinos, mainland-US-born Hispanics/Latinos had significantly lower dietary scores (P < 0.001). Differences in dietary scores between mainland-US-born and non-mainland-US-born Hispanics/Latinos were majorly driven by differences in dietary intakes of healthy plant-based foods. After adjusting for multiple covariates, significantly lower risk ratios (95% CI) of CVD were observed for 1-SD increments of the dietary scores, with 0.74 (0.60, 0.91) for aMED, 0.80 (0.63, 1.00) for HEI-2015, and 0.74 (0.60, 0.93) for hPDI. CONCLUSIONS: Although adherence to healthy eating patterns varied by Hispanic/Latino backgrounds and generations, greater adherence to these eating patterns was associated with lower risk of CVD across diverse US Hispanics/Latinos.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The decision to get involved in the study and practice of medicine is not easy. Within the scientific environment, achieving both professional and personal success requires a strict discipline, where effort becomes an essential part of daily life; in addition, having family support becomes crucial in order for not to lose hope when confronting the different adversities that arise during medical training. OBJECTIVE: To identify families where at least two members belong to the Academia Nacional de Medicina de México (ANMM). METHODS: A cross-sectional study was carried out to identify families of Mexican doctors where at least two members, consanguineous or in-laws, have been or are ANMM members through a review of 2017 ANMM Directory and personal contact with the different academics. RESULTS: Information on 45 families belonging to the ANMM was collected. CONCLUSIONS: From this study, it is possible to show the great influence that some doctors have in their family environment, which makes the study of medicine attractive as a life project.

RESUMEN

How are risk orientations shaped in the sphere of work beyond proximate structuring institutions? In the absence of clear organizational imperatives or institutional supports, what provides the broad contours of a workable imaginary? Using interview data from small business owners in Argentina, I show that the form and content of generational memories of crisis influence the uptake of entrepreneurial discourse and apprehensions of economic risk. Older business owners draw upon their collective memory of the 2001-2002 economic crisis to engage in a process of adversarial personification that posits the macroeconomy as a cunning enemy and positions them as strategic actors. Conversely, younger small business owners-who did not live through these economic shocks as small business owners-draw upon the entrepreneurial ethos that they collectively cultivate through generational communities of practice to engage in a process of empowered distancing that minimizes the severity of economic crisis. Using Kenneth Burke's theoretical schema to identify grammars of motive and action, I show how older business owners deploy a generationally shared narrative to develop a conceptualization of economic agency that does not derive from the entrepreneurial ethos. By arguing that collective memory generates economic subject positions, this article demonstrates that the "use value" of collective memory lies not only in its uptake by politicians, journalists, and activists engaged in political projects, but also in the everyday ways that economic actors use narratives about the past to develop strategies of risk management in the present.

José Martí declared: "Knowing how to sacrifice is the price of lasting success at everything." The work of Dr. Francisco Valdés Lazo can be summed up in great sacrifices and successes during all his working life. He was an exceptional physician who knew how to link his administrative responsibilities to teaching and research. He was a tireless fighter for the advances in Medicine, the founder of the Cuban School of Pediatrics and a great example for Cuban and Latin American doctors. During his student life, he collaborated prominently with different activities, being the founder of the revolutionary militias. As soon as he graduated, he started to work in the pediatric hospital of Santa Clara. He also cared for the militiamen who were mobilized in the fight against bandits in El Escambray. After he finished his social service, he had already demonstrated his leadership condition; therefore, he was designed as deputy director of the Pedro Borrás Pediatric Hospital. His qualities as revolutionary as well as his intelligence and total dedication to work allowed him to be promoted to different management positions until he was positioned at the central level. He provided scientific advice to different countries in the world such as Guinea Bissau, Nicaragua, Bolivia, Mexico, and Guatemala. He taught numerous national and international postgraduate courses and received different awards as physician and researcher. His humanism, management methods, affable character and his sense of humor, even in difficult situations, make this Cuban medical professional an example to be followed for all generations of doctors(AU)

RESUMEN

Substantial increases in global temperature are projected for the coming decades due to climate change. Considering that temperature has a strong influence on insect voltinism (i.e., number of generations per year), climate change may affect the population growth of insects, with potential consequences for food production. The southern armyworm, Spodoptera eridania, is a multivoltine species native to the American tropics that causes severe damage to several crops. In this context, this study evaluated the impacts of climate change on the voltinism of S. eridania in southern Brazil. Current and future daily temperature data were combined with non-linear and degree-day models to estimate the voltinism of this pest. Under current climate conditions, the voltinism of S. eridania ranged from 2.9 to 9.2 generations, with fewer cohorts in colder regions and more in warmer ones. A higher number of generations was predicted for the future climate scenarios evaluated, reaching up to 12.1 annual generations in certain regions by 2070. Most of the variation in voltinism was explained by location (87.7%) and by the interaction between location and mathematical model (3.0%). The degree-day model estimated an increase in the number of generations in the entire study area, while the non-linear model predicted a decrease in voltinism in the warmer regions under future climate change scenarios. Given these differences between the predictions provided by degree-day and non-linear models, the selection of the best method to be used in climate change studies should be carried out carefully, considering how species respond to temperature. A considerable increase in the number of generations of S. eridania was projected for most of the study area under the climate change scenarios evaluated, suggesting a possible rise in pest incidence levels in the coming decades.

This study aimed to investigate what has been published in the national and international literature on transgenerational psychic transmission. The bibliographical survey used the temporal criterion of the last fifteen years and the databases Lilacs, PsycINFO, Scielo and PePSIC. The study consisted of 27 articles. The results indicated that the selected studies used the qualitative method, are national and come from empirical research, clinical practice and theorists. Few have accessed three generations, including children and male lineages. Concluding, it was possible to establish a reflective and differentiated view about family relations as constituents of individual psychic suffering. The studies emphasized the possibility of creative transformation of these symptomatic family legacies, going beyond the negative bias of psychic transmission between generations.

RESUMEN

Some livestock breeds face the challenge of reduced genetic variation, increased inbreeding depression owing to genetic drift and selection. Hybridization can reverse these processes and increase levels of productivity and adaptation to various environmental stressors. Samples from American Brangus were used to evaluate the indicine/taurine composition through nine generations (~45 years) after the hybridization process was completed. The purpose was to determine how hybridization alters allelic combinations of a breed over time when genetic factors such as selection and drift are operating. Furthermore, we explored genomic regions with deviations from the expected composition from the progenitor breeds and related these regions to traits under selection. The Brangus composition deviated from the theoretical expectation, defined by the breed association, of 62.5% taurine, showing taurine composition to be 70.4 ± 0.6%. Taurine and indicine proportion were not consistent across chromosomes. Furthermore, these non-uniform areas were found to be associated with traits that were probably under selection such as intermuscular fat and average daily gain. Interestingly, the sex chromosomes were predominantly taurine, which could be due to the composite being formed particularly in the final cross that resulted in progeny designated as purebred Brangus. This work demonstrated the process of new breed formation on a genomic level. It suggests that factors like genetic drift, selection and complementarity shift the genetic architecture into a uniquely different population. These findings are important to better understand how hybridization and crossbreeding systems shape the genetic architecture of composite populations.

RESUMEN

The US Latino/a population is considered to be at high risk for unintended pregnancy; some research indicates that Latino/a parents are more likely to express happiness about an unintended pregnancy than other racial/ethnic groups. Associations between pregnancy attitudes and factors such as religiosity and nativity have also been documented in the Latino/a population, but existing research is sparse, dated and primarily focused on women of Mexican heritage. This study sought to expand this literature by examining the relationship between religiosity and pregnancy acceptability and assessing effect modification by generational status and gender in a national sample of young Latino/a cisgender women and men of various ancestral backgrounds currently in relationships. In multivariable logistic regression models, there was a positive association between importance of religion and pregnancy acceptability for both men and women; being highly or moderately religious was associated with elevated odds of finding a pregnancy acceptable. Effect modification by generational status was significant for women, but not for men. Results suggest that religiosity, gender and generational status have differential influences on and relationships to pregnancy orientations for Latina women and Latino men and should be considered in the design and delivery of family planning care for Latino/a clients.

Research shows that foreign-born blacks have better health profiles than their U.S.-born counterparts. Less is known, however, regarding whether black immigrants' favorable health outcomes persist across generations or whether these patterns differ across the diverse sending regions for black immigrants. In this study, we use data from the 1996-2014 waves of the March Current Population Survey (CPS) to investigate generational differences in self-rated health among blacks with West Indian, Haitian, Latin American, and African ancestry. We show that first-generation black immigrants have a lower probability of reporting fair/poor health than third/higher generation blacks. The health advantage of the first generation over the third/higher generation is slightly more prounced among the foreign-born who migrated to the United States after age 13. Second-generation immigrants with two foreign-born parents are generally less likely to report their health as fair/poor than the third/higher generation. However, we find no evidence that self-reported fair/poor health varies between second-generation immigrants with mixed nativity parents (only one foreign-born parent) and the third/higher generation. These general patterns hold across each of the ancestral subgroups in the study sample. In summary, our findings highlight a remarkable convergence in health across immigrant generations among blacks in the United States.
