RESUMEN

Pregnant women undergoing a cesarean section (CS) typically receive antibiotics prior to skin incision to prevent infections. To investigate if the timing of antibiotics influences the infant gut microbiome, we conducted a randomized controlled trial (NCT06030713) in women delivering via a scheduled CS who received antibiotics either before skin incision or after umbilical cord clamping. We performed a longitudinal analysis on 172 samples from 28 infants at 8 post-birth time points and a cross-sectional analysis at 1 month in 79 infants from 3 cohorts. Although no significant associations with bacterial composition, metabolic pathways, short-chain fatty acids, and bile acids were found, we observed subtle differences between the groups at the bacterial strain level and in the load of antibiotic resistance genes. Rather, feeding mode was a predominant and defining factor impacting infant microbial composition. In conclusion, antibiotic administration during CS has only limited effects on the early-life gut microbiome.

BACKGROUND: Leaf feeders, such as Spodoptera frugiperda and Spodoptera litura, and stem borers Ostrinia furnacalis and Chilo suppressalis, occupy two different niches and are well adapted to their particular environments. Borer larvae burrow and inhabit the interior of stems, which are relatively dark. By contrast, the larvae of leaf feeders are exposed to sunlight during feeding. We therefore designed series of experiments to evaluate the effect of light intensity (0, 2000, and 10 000 lx) on these pests with different feeding modes. RESULTS: The development of all four pests was significantly delayed at 0 lx. Importantly, light intensity affected the development of both male and female larvae of borers, but only significantly affected male larvae of leaf feeders. Furthermore, the proportion of female offspring of leaf feeders increased with increasing light intensity (S. frugiperda: 33.89%, 42.26%, 57.41%; S. litura: 38.90%, 51.75%, 65.08%), but no significant differences were found in stem borers. This research also revealed that the survival rate of female leaf feeders did not vary across light intensities, but that of males decreased with increasing light intensity (S. frugiperda: 97.78%, 85.86%, 61.21%; S. litura: 95.83%, 73.54%, 58.99%). CONCLUSION: These results improve our understanding of how light intensity affects sex differences in important lepidopteran pests occupying different feeding niches and their ecological interactions with abiotic factors in agroecosystems. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely found in the ocean and cause a serious risk to marine organisms. However, fewer studies have been conducted on benthic organisms. This study conducted a case study on the pollution characteristics of MPs on 16 marine benthic organisms in Haizhou Bay, and analyzed the effects of habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode on the MPs pollution characters. The results showed that MPs were detected in all 16 organisms with an average abundance of 8.84 ± 9.14 items/individual, which is in the middle-high level in the international scale. Among the detected MPs, the main material was cellophane. This study showed that benthic organisms can be used as indicator organisms for MPs pollution. MPs in organisms can be affected by their habitat, trophic level, and feeding mode. Comprehensive analysis of MPs in benthic organisms will contribute to fully understand the characterization and source resolution of MPs pollution.

This study examined microplastic (MP) occurrence and abundance in marine fish collected from the western and eastern waters of Hong Kong during the wet and dry seasons. Over half (57.1%) of the fish had MP in their gastrointestinal (GI) tracts, with overall MP abundance ranging from not detected to 44.0 items per individual. Statistical analysis revealed significant spatial and temporal differences in MP occurrence, with fish from more polluted areas having a higher likelihood of MP ingestion. Additionally, fish collected in the west during the wet season had significantly higher MP abundance, likely due to influence from the Pearl River Estuary. Omnivorous fish had significantly higher MP counts than carnivorous fish, regardless of collection location or time. Body length and weight were not significant predictors of MP occurrence or abundance. Our study identified several ecological drivers that affect MP ingestion by fish, including spatial-temporal variation, feeding mode, and feeding range. These findings provide a foundation for future research to investigate the relative importance of these factors in governing MP ingestion by fish in different ecosystems and species.

All organisms have a biological clock system which is strongly tied to how well an organism digests food and develops. This study aimed to understand the effects of circadian rhythm and feeding modes on rumen fermentation and microorganisms in Hu sheep. Forty-five healthy Hu sheep were randomly divided into three treatment groups of 15 sheep in each group, wherein they were fed the same concentrate and roughage. Under the condition that the nutrient-feeding amount was consistent throughout the day, the concentrate-to-forage ratio was dynamically adjusted during the day and night. Rumen fluid collected after the feeding experiment was used to determine the study parameters; the results showed a connection between rumen fermentation and the circadian clock. Volatile fatty acids (VFAs), pH, and NH3-N were significantly influenced by the fermentation duration (p < 0.05). The activities of digestive enzymes also showed a relationship with nutrition and circadian rhythm, and there were differences in the digestive enzyme activities of amylase, lipase, and cellulase (p < 0.05). Dominant microorganisms, such as Saccharomycetes and Mucor, were more abundant in the daytime of the high-concentrate fed group. The correlation among the study objectives was evident from the differences in enzyme activity and microbial diversity among the treatment groups. On the basis of the circadian rhythm characteristics of Hu sheep, changes in the feeding mode of Hu sheep and only adjusting the proportion of concentrate and forage in the morning and evening showed that feeding diets with the high-concentrate ratio in the day significantly reduced rumen PH and increased NH3-N concentration (p < 0.05). Under this feeding pattern, the activities of major digestive enzymes in the rumen, such as amylase and lipase, were significantly increased (p < 0.05), and the microbial diversity was also improved.

Biomass and abundance are fundamental parameters in ecology, conservation biology, and environmental impact assessment. Distinguishing features, such as burrow openings and feeding pellets, made by different intertidal macroinvertebrate species on the surface are used as proxies to establish the abundance of intertidal macroinvertebrates. This study investigated the feasibility of estimating biomass from the burrow opening dimensions as a proxy. We analyzed the relationship between the burrow opening dimensions and body weights of intertidal macroinvertebrates and compared surface deposit feeders with suspension feeders. Regression analysis evaluated the relationship between burrow opening diameter, body size, and biomass. The diameters of surface deposit feeder burrow openings were significantly related to biomass, but this was not the case for suspension feeders. Our results indicate that burrow opening dimensions can be used as a proxy to estimate the biomass of surface deposit feeders. However, additional studies are needed to clarify further the relationship between the burrow opening diameter and biomass of the suspension feeders. This is a preliminary study to spatially quantify the biomass of intertidal macroinvertebrates by extracting the dimension of burrow openings from drone images through object detection tools.

The limited efficiency of nitrogen removal has traditionally hindered wide application of simultaneous nitrification and denitrification (SND) technology. Here, the nitrogen removal characteristics of a sequencing batch reactor were studied by adopting a strategy of a step-feeding mode, synergistic regional oxygen limitation, and a mixed carbon source. The changes of the microbial population succession and nitrogen metabolism functional genes were analyzed. This strategy provided a favorable level of dissolved oxygen and continuous carbon sources for driving the denitrification process. The total nitrogen removal efficiency and SND rate reached 92.60% and 96.49%, respectively, by regulating the ratio of sodium acetate to starch in the step feed to 5:1. This procedure increased the relative abundance of denitrifying functional genes and induced the growth of a variety of traditional denitrifying bacteria and aerobic denitrifying bacteria participating in the process of nitrogen removal. Overall, this work offers a new strategy for achieving efficient SND.

BACKGROUND: Sequential feeding (SF) is a new feeding mode for critically ill patients that involves a combination of continuous feeding (CF) in the beginning, rhythmic feeding in the second stage, and oral feeding in the last stage. In this study, we investigated the influence of SF on gut microbiota and metabolomics in critically ill patients. METHODS: Stool specimens from 20 patients (10 patients with the SF group, 10 patients with the CF group) were collected for full-length 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and untargeted metabolomics analysis. RESULTS: The proportion of patients with low bacterial diversity (Shannon index < 4) in the SF group was much lower than that in the CF group, but there was no significant difference in the proportions (20% vs 50%, P = .350). The abundances of Actinobacteria/Actinobacteria (at the phylum and class levels), Pseudomonadaceae/Pseudomonas (at the family and genus levels), and Fusobacteria/Fusobacteriaceae/Fusobacteriales/Fusobacteria/Fusobacterium (at the phylum, class, order, family, and genus levels) were all higher in the SF group than in the CF group. Actinobacteria/Actinobacteria (at the phylum and class levels) were the most influential of these gut flora. Retinoic acid and leucine were upregulated in the SF group and were respectively responsible for the intestinal immune network for immunoglobulin A production and the mammalian target of rapamycin signaling pathway in the enriched pathways according to the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database classification. CONCLUSIONS: SF could alter gut microbiota and metabolomics in critically ill patients. Because of the small sample size, further study is required.

To determine the distribution and causes of extinction threat across functional groups of terrestrial vertebrates, we assembled an ecological trait data set for 18,016 species of terrestrial vertebrates and utilized phylogenetic comparative methods to test which categories of habitat association, mode of locomotion, and feeding mode best predicted extinction risk. We also examined the individual categories of the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List extinction drivers (e.g., agriculture and logging) threatening each species and determined the greatest threats for each of the four terrestrial vertebrate groups. We then quantified the sum of extinction drivers threatening each species to provide a multistressor perspective on threat. Cave dwelling amphibians (p < 0.01), arboreal quadrupedal mammals (all of which are primates) (p < 0.01), aerial and scavenging birds (p < 0.01), and pedal (i.e., walking) squamates (p < 0.01) were all disproportionately threatened with extinction in comparison with the other assessed ecological traits. Across all threatened vertebrate species in the study, the most common risk factors were agriculture, threatening 4491 species, followed by logging, threatening 3187 species, and then invasive species and disease, threatening 2053 species. Species at higher risk of extinction were simultaneously at risk from a greater number of threat types. If left unabated, the disproportionate loss of species with certain functional traits and increasing anthropogenic pressures are likely to disrupt ecosystem functions globally. A shift in focus from species- to trait-centric conservation practices will allow for protection of at-risk functional diversity from regional to global scales.


Una Señal Ecológica Mundial del Riesgo de Extinción de los Vertebrados Terrestres Resumen Construimos un conjunto de datos de atributos ecológicos de 18,016 especies de vertebrados terrestres y utilizamos métodos de comparación filogenética para analizar cuáles categorías de asociación de hábitat, modo de locomoción y modo de alimentación predicen de mejor manera el riesgo de extinción. Lo anterior lo hicimos para determinar la distribución y las causas de las amenazas de extinción a lo largo de los grupos funcionales de vertebrados terrestres. También examinamos las categorías individuales de los factores de extinción (p. ej.: agricultura, tala de árboles) de la Lista Roja de la Unión Internacional para la Conservación de la Naturaleza que amenazan a cada especie y determinamos las principales amenazas para cada uno de los cuatro grupos de vertebrados terrestres. Después cuantificamos la suma de los factores de extinción que amenazan a cada especie para proporcionar una perspectiva de estresores múltiples sobre la amenaza. Los anfibios cavernícolas (p < 0.01), mamíferos arbóreos cuadrúpedos (todos son primates) (p < 0.01), aves aéreas y carroñeras (p < 0.01) y los escamados caminantes (p < 0.01) tuvieron una amenaza de extinción desproporcionada en comparación con los otros atributos ecológicos analizados. Cadmium (Cd) is among the most available and most toxic heavy metals taken up by plants from soil. Compared to the classic plant-animal food chains, the host-parasitic plant food chains have, thus far, been largely overlooked in the studies of Cd trophic transfer. To investigate the pattern of Cd transfer during the infection of parasitic plants on Cd-contaminated hosts, we conducted a controlled experiment that grew soybeans parasitized by Chinese dodders (Cuscuta chinensis) in soil with different levels of Cd treatment, and examined the concentration, accumulation, allocation and transfer coefficients of Cd within this parasitic system. Results showed that among all components, dodders accounted for more than 40% biomass of the whole system but had the lowest Cd concentration and accumulated the least amount of Cd. The transfer coefficient of Cd between soybean stems and dodders was much lower than 1, and was also significantly lower than that between soybean stems and soybean leaves. All these features were continuously strengthened with the increase of Cd treatment levels. The results suggested no evidence of Cd biomagnification in dodders parasitizing Cd-contaminated hosts, and implied that the Cd transfer from hosts to dodders may be a selective process.

Inconsistent conclusions from infant sleep and feeding studies may influence parents feeding-related decisions. This study aimed to systematically review the existing literature on infant sleep and its relation to the timing of introduction to complementary foods and type of milk feeding to better understand their role(s) in infant sleep. Cohort, longitudinal, cross-sectional studies, and controlled trials were identified using online searches of five databases up to April 2020. Twenty-one articles with a total of 6225 infants under 12 months-of-age were eligible. Exclusively breastfed infants (≤6 months-of-age) had a greater number of night wakings, but most studies (67%) reported no difference in night-time and 24 h sleep duration compared to formula-fed infants. However, after 6 months-of-age, most studies (>65%) reported breastfed infants to sleep less in the night-time and over 24 h compared to formula-fed infants. Furthermore, studies reported no association between the timing of introduction to complementary foods and infant sleep duration (<12 months-of-age). Future studies using standardized methodologies and definitions, transdisciplinary expertise, and longitudinal design are required to better understand the complex role of feeding on sleep.

Actual domestic sewage has a complex composition and relatively low carbon and nitrogen content. Anaerobic plug-flow influent can enhance the utilization of COD by aerobic granular sludge by providing a locally high concentration of substrate. In this study, intermittent aeration was used to cultivate aerobic granular sludge in a sequencing batch reactor (SBR), and actual domestic sewage was used as the feed water to inoculate the sewage plant sludge. In the R1 experiment, rapid anaerobic feeding was adopted, while in R2, anaerobic plug-flow feeding was adopted, to explore the impact of different feeding modes on the aerobic granular sludge system of domestic sewage. Under rapid anaerobic feeding in R1, the particle structure appeared earlier, but particle breakage occurred after 71 days of operation; the particle structure generated in R2 was denser than that of R1, the particle surfaces were smoother, and the denitrifying phosphorous accumulating organisms (DPAO) had a more enriching effect. In the final R1 and R2 reactors, the proportion of DPAO to phosphorous accumulating organisms (PAO) was 14.17% and 22.07%, respectively. The results show that the anaerobic plug-flow feeding mode can enhance the use of influent COD by granular sludge, which is conducive to enriching DPAO, generating denser and more stable particles, realizing "one carbon dual purpose" operation, and removing more nitrogen and phosphorus.

AbstractIt is well accepted that the complexity of functional systems may mitigate performance trade-offs. However, data supporting this theory are hard to find because they need to be based on a functional system with different complexity levels in closely related species. The Pomacentridae (damselfishes) provide an excellent opportunity to test this hypothesis because most of the species have two mouth-closing systems: the first using the adductor mandibulae, as in all teleost fishes, and the second relying on the ceratomandibular (cmd) ligament, a synapomorphic trait of the family. Interestingly, some pomacentrids have secondarily lost the cmd ligament during evolution and therefore have a less complex mouth-closing system. Using dissection, kinematic analysis, and mathematical modeling, we demonstrated that the possession of two mouth-closing systems enabled grazing damselfishes to have a forceful and extremely fast bite. This combination challenges a major functional trade-off in fish jaw dynamics, as systems better suited for force transmission are usually less suited for speed transmission, and vice versa. The combination of grazing behavior, small and robust lower jaws (conferring high biting force), and an ultrafast bite is unusual within actinopterygians. These attributes and their associated performance seem to be required conditions to colonize the ecological niche of farming, that is, the maintenance of small filamentous algae crops serving as both food and storage.

We are glad to respond to the concerns of Drs. Levy and Terrault about our articles on the mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in HBeAg-positive mothers. We agree with Drs. Levy and Terrault that antiviral therapy of HBV during pregnancy could effectively decrease the MTCT, and this strategy has been recommended by WHO for pregnant women with a high viral load. However, the long-term influences of the abrupt cessation of antiretroviral drugs in mothers and prenatal exposure to antiviral drugs in newborns are not completely understood and are still under investigation. And not all pregnant mothers would accept this regiment due to the medication availability and individual willingness. It makes sense to study the influential factors on MTCT among mothers with high-risk transmission but not taking antiviral drugs. Despite the relatively large number of subjects included in our cohort (N = 857), post hoc power computation shows that the test efficacy is far from adequate to detect the association between delivery mode or feeding type and HBV MTCT. Therefore, we summarized the relevant studies to reach a relatively reasonable conclusion in HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive pregnant mothers not taking antiviral drugs. We provide an alternative option for HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive pregnant mothers who cannot access or defer to antiviral therapy during pregnancy to reduce the risk of HBV transmission to their offspring.

Objective:To study the influence of different feeding patterns on mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B virus (HBV) in pregnant women with high viral loads who received antiviral medication during pregnancy to the day of delivery.Methods:This prospective cohort study was conducted in Beijing You'an Hospital. From January 1, 2019, to March 31, 2020, and 574 pregnant women with positive hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) and HBV DNA>2×10 5 IU/ml were enrolled. All participants received tenofovir, telbivudine, lamivudine, or propofol tenofovir from 24-28 weeks of gestation and discontinued on the day of delivery, and their neonates were postnatally given routine passive-active immunoprophylaxis. Based on the feeding patterns, the subjects were divided into three groups: breastfeeding ( n=257), bottle-feeding ( n=241) and mixed feeding groups ( n=76). The follow-up data were obtained from liver functions and HBV DNA level of the mothers at 6-8 weeks postpartum and HBV serological markers of infants at 7-12 months. One-way ANOVA, Student-Newman-Keuls, Chi-square test or Fisher exact test, and repeated measures ANOVA were used to analyze the data. Results:The average maternal HBV DNA levels before antiviral treatment did not differ significantly between the three groups [(7.90±0.67), (7.82±0.70), (7.83±0.70) log 10 IU/ml, F=0.912, P>0.05]. HBV DNA level before delivery in the mixed feeding group was slightly lower than that in the breastfeeding and bottle-feeding group [(3.87 ±1.08) vs (4.21±1.17) and (4.30±1.28) log 10 IU/ml, q= 3.052 and 3.831, both P<0.05], while the comparison between the latter two groups showed no significant differences ( P>0.05). After delivery, HBV DNA level in the bottle-feeding group was slightly lower than that in the breastfeeding group [(7.42±0.93) vs (7.69±0.90) log 10 IU/ml, q=4.583, P<0.05]. Among 580 infants (including six pairs of twins), only one bottle-fed infant (0.4%, 1/243) was infected with HBV through MTCT, and none in the breastfeeding or mixed feeding group ( P=0.553). Conclusions:For pregnant women with high viral loads of HBV who have received antiviral medication during pregnancy, although HBV DNA level will rebound after discontinuation upon delivery, breastfeeding is recommended considering it does not increase the risk of MTCT.

Nudibranch molluscs represent an interesting model group to study the evolution of feeding apparatus and feeding modes, being characterized by specialized buccal complex in combination with extremely diverse dietary preferences and multiply prey shifts in evolutionary history. However, the plasticity of the buccal complex morphology in response to diet and specific feeding modes remains understudied. Here we study the general morphology and ontogenesis of the buccal complex in Eubranchus rupium (Nudibranchia: Fionidae). Specific goals are to provide a detailed description of buccal structures morphology in post-larval stages, suggest the feeding mechanism and discuss the phylogenetic value of the morphological characteristics of buccal armature within the genus Eubranchus. Methods included in vivo observations of the feeding process for E. rupium, light microscopic methods, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (cLSM). According to our results, E. rupium is a mechanical driller, boring holes in hydrozoan perisarc and sucking internal content. The mechanical drilling is supplied by functionally uniserial radula with plate-like laterals teeth of exclusively supportive function and by massive buccal musculature. Comparative phylogeny-based analysis suggests that the drilling feeding mode is common for the genus Eubranchus and indicates radular characters may have a high phylogenetic signal. The buccal complex morphology and feeding mode were found to be similar in both adults and post-metamorphic specimens, its general structures occur even in settled veligers. Juveniles and adults compete for food source, but the competition is smoothed due to characteristics of prey species growth and life cycle.

The study aimed to assess whether caesarean section and nonbreastfeeding can prevent mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) in HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive mothers via a cohort study and a meta-analysis. (1) Pregnant women who were positive for HBsAg and HBeAg and did not receive antiviral treatment during pregnancy were recruited from the First Hospital of Jilin University, Maternal and Child Health Care Center of Jiangsu and Henan from August 2009 to June 2015. Infants received active and passive immunity. (2) In addition, a systematic literature search was performed in the PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, China National Knowledge Infrastructure and Wanfang Chinese databases. The retrieval strategy was [("HBV" or "hepatitis b" or "hepatitis b virus") and ("mother-to-infant transmission" or "vertical transmission")]. Studies were screened, and data were extracted. The fixed-effect model was used to analyse the studies. A total of 852 mothers and 857 newborns were enrolled. At the age of 7 months, 41 infants (4.78%) were positive for HBsAg. Multivariate analysis showed that mothers with higher HBV DNA levels (>108  IU/mL; RR = 3.03, 95% CI: 1.41-6.52) were associated with an increased risk of infection. Although there was no statistical significance, caesarean section (RR = 0.61) and nonbreastfeeding (RR = 0.88) showed a tendency to reduce the risk of infection. (2) A total of 5726 studies were identified. Together with our study, 13 were included in the analysis of delivery mode, and 12 were included in the analysis of feeding mode. The risk of infection in the caesarean section group was lower than that in the vaginal delivery group (RR = 0.58, 95% CI: 0.46-0.74). In the analysis of feeding mode, the risk in the nonbreastfeeding group was significantly lower (RR = 0.74, 95% CI: 0.56-0.98). In conclusion, caesarean section and nonbreastfeeding reduced the risk of MTCT in infants of HBsAg- and HBeAg-positive mothers who did not receive antiviral therapy during pregnancy.

Microplastics (MPs) are physical anthropogenic pollutants and their ability to act as contaminant vectors in biological matrices is of serious ecosystem and human health concern. In the present study, we have, for the first time, screened and detected MPs in the stomach of a select group of commonly consumed fish species from a municipal water supply lake (Eleyele) in Nigeria. A total of 109 fish samples consisting of eight (8) species: Coptodon zillii (CZ: n = 38), Oreochromis niloticus (ON: n = 43), Sarotheron melanotheron (SM: n = 19), Chrysicthys nigrodigitatus (CN: n = 3), Lates niloticus (LN: n = 3), Paranchanna obscura (PO: n = 1), Hemichromis fasiatus (HF: n = 1), and Hepsetus odoe (HO: n = 1) were collected between February-April, 2018. Fish stomach content was screened for the presence of MPs using the density gradient separation technique (NaCl hypersaline solution) and examined using a fluorescence microscope. MPs were present in all the species screened (except H. fasciatus) with a frequency of 69.7% positive individuals in the examined species. MP prevalence was highest in ON (34%) > CZ (32%) > SM (13%) > CN (6%) and 5% each, for PO HO, and LN. On average, 1-6 MPs with sizes ranging between 124 µm and 1.53 mm were detected per individual. However, the highest number (34) of MPs was detected in the stomach of SM. Principal coordinate analysis (PCA) identified ecological variables such as habitat, feeding mode, and trophic levels as critical factors that may determine and influence MP uptake in fish population. The PCA showed stronger association between fish habitat, feeding mode, and trophic level with MP size and number in the benthopelagic species (ON CZ and SM), compared to demersal species (PO CN HO and LN). Given that MPs can act as vectors for the transfer of pathogens and environmental contaminants (both legacy and emerging), in addition to direct health risks to aquatic organisms, our findings raise concerns on the potential human/wildlife health effects of MPs in these economically and ecologically important food fishes.

Postnatal acquisition of microorganisms from maternal and environmental sources contributes to the child microbiome development. Several studies showed that the mode of delivery and breastfeeding may have impact on the oral bacterial colonization, however, the influence on oral fungal colonization is still unknown. We performed a systematic literature review on mother to child oral fungi transmission, namely regarding the association between the mode of delivery and breastfeeding in oral yeast colonization. Our analysis revealed no significant differences between the oral mycobiome of breastfed and bottle-fed children. As for the delivery mode, the majority of studies found a relation between fungal colonization and vaginal delivery. Candida albicans was the most commonly isolated fungi species. Our analysis suggests that maternal breastfeeding does not seem to influence oral mycology, but vaginal delivery appears to promote oral yeast colonization in early life.

Microplastic (MP) pollution in the marine environment has gained much concern in recent years. This study investigated the occurrence of MPs in invertebrates collected on 18 mudflats and sandy beaches in Hong Kong and its relationships to biological taxon, feeding mode and habitat. In total 38 species of gastropods, bivalves and crabs were collected and the mean number of suspected microplastics ranged from 0 to 9.68 particles g-1 wet weight or 0 to 18.4 particles individual-1. Around 26% of the suspected microplastics were confirmed to be synthetic polymers, including CP (cellophane), PET (polyethylene terephthalate), and PA (polyamide). Microplastic fibres were the most abundant type of MPs, followed by pellets. Significantly higher abundance of suspected microplastics was found in gastropods. Since MP abundance might vary with taxon, it is recommended to include different taxonomic groups in any ecological assessment of the impact of MPs.
