RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Delivering prescription digital therapeutics (ie, evidence-based interventions designed to treat, manage, or prevent disorders via websites or smartphone apps) in primary care could increase patient access to substance use disorder (SUD) treatments. However, the optimal approach to implementing prescription digital therapeutics in primary care remains unknown. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study is a precursor to a larger trial designed to test whether implementation strategies (practice facilitation [PF] and health coaching [HC]) improve the delivery of prescription digital therapeutics for SUDs in primary care. This mixed methods study describes outcomes among patients in the 2 pilot clinics and presents qualitative findings on implementation. METHODS: From February 10 to August 6, 2021, a total of 3 mental health specialists embedded in 2 primary care practices of the same integrated health system were tasked with offering app-based prescription digital therapeutics to patients with SUD. In the first half of the pilot, implementation activities included training and supportive tools. PF (at 1 clinic) and HC (at 2 clinics) were added in the second half. All study analyses relied on secondary data, including electronic health records and digital therapeutic vendor data. Primary outcomes were the proportion of patients reached by the prescription digital therapeutics and fidelity related to ideal use. We used qualitative methods to assess the adherence to planned activities and the barriers and facilitators to implementing prescription digital therapeutics. RESULTS: Of all 18 patients prescribed the apps, 10 (56%) downloaded the app and activated their prescription, and 8 (44%) completed at least 1 module of content. Patients who activated the app completed 1 module per week on average. Ideal use (fidelity) was defined as completing 4 modules per week and having a monthly SUD-related visit; 1 (6%) patient met these criteria for 10 weeks (of the 12-week prescription period). A total of 5 (28%) patients had prescriptions while HC was available, 2 (11%) were successfully contacted, and both declined coaching. Clinicians reported competing clinical priorities, technical challenges, and logistically complex workflows in part because the apps required a prescription. Some pilot activities were impacted by staff turnover that coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic. The facilitators to implementation were high engagement and the perception that the apps could meet patient needs. CONCLUSIONS: The pilot study encountered the barriers to implementing prescription digital therapeutics in a real-world primary care setting, especially staffing shortages, turnover, and competing priorities for clinic teams. The larger randomized trial will clarify the extent to which PF and HC improve the implementation of digital therapeutics. BACKGROUND: Depression is the most diagnosed mental health condition among people living with HIV. Collaborative care is an effective intervention for depression, typically delivered in primary care settings. The HIV Translating Initiatives for Depression into Effective Solutions (HITIDES) clinical intervention involves a depression care team housed off-site that supports depression care delivery by HIV care providers. In a randomized controlled trial, HITIDES significantly improved depression symptoms for veterans living with HIV and delivered cost savings. However, no HIV clinics in the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) have implemented HITIDES; as such, it is unclear what implementation strategies are necessary to launch and sustain this intervention. METHODS: This hybrid type-3 effectiveness-implementation trial examines the implementation and effectiveness of HITIDES in 8 VHA HIV clinics randomly assigned to one of two implementation arms. Each arm uses a different implementation strategy package. Arm 1 includes an intervention operations guide; an on-site clinical champion who, with the help of a peer community of practice, will work with local clinicians and leadership to implement HITIDES at their site; and patient engagement in implementation tools. Arm 2 includes all strategies from Arm 1 with assistance from an external facilitator. The primary implementation outcomes is reach; secondary outcomes include adoption, implementation dose, depressive symptoms, and suicidal ideation. We will conduct a budget impact analysis of the implementation strategy packages. We hypothesize that Arm 2 will be associated with greater reach and adoption and that Arm 1 will be less costly. DISCUSSION: Preliminary work identified implementation strategies acceptable to veterans living with HIV and HIV care providers; however, the effectiveness and cost of these strategies are unknown. While the depression care team can deliver services consistently with high quality, the ability of the depression care team to engage with HIV care providers at sites is unknown. Findings from this study will be used to inform selection of implementation strategies for a broad rollout to enhance depression and suicide care for people living with HIV. [Purpose] Shoulder subluxation is a common complication of acute stroke that affects clinical rehabilitation training and hinders the recovery of upper limb motor function. This study explored the short-term interventional effects of neuromuscular joint facilitation in patients who experienced stroke with shoulder subluxation. [Participants and Methods] We recruited 36 patients who experienced stroke with shoulder subluxation. All patients were randomly divided into two groups: the neuromuscular joint facilitation group (n=18) and the control group (n=18). The control group underwent routine rehabilitation treatment. The intervention in the neuromuscular joint facilitation group involved neuromuscular joint facilitation of the shoulder joint in four modes based on conventional rehabilitation treatment. Four different interventions were administered. The thickness of the supraspinatus muscle and the acromion-greater tuberosity distance were measured using ultrasound to observe the curative effect. [Results] In neuromuscular joint facilitation group, the thickness of supraspinatus muscle, acromion-greater tuberosity distance and acromion-greater tuberosity distance difference were significantly different before and after intervention. In the control group, there were no significant difference before and after intervention. [Conclusion] Neuromuscular joint facilitation intervention improved the thickness of the supraspinatus muscle, shortened the distance between the acromion and the greater tubercle, and improved shoulder subluxation in patients who experienced stroke.

In their influential paper Wurtele et al. (2014) investigated the degree to which individuals within the general population (N = 435) express sexual interest in children. In the male population of their study (n = 173), about 6% showed a propensity to engage in sexual activity with a child. Based on a German general population sample consisting of women and men (N = 911, n = 206 males), we were able to replicate most of the results of Wurtele and colleagues (e.g., 6% of men indicated some likelihood of having sex with a child). To explain sexual offending, Seto (2019) developed the motivation-facilitation model (MFM). In our study, we were interested whether this model also translates to explaining the propensity for deviant sexual behavior in the general population. Moderated hierarchical logistic regression analyses revealed that hypersexuality and sexual fantasies had significant effects as motivating factors for deviant sexual behavior (e.g., sexually assaulting an adult), whereas we found no significant effect of psychopathy as a facilitator. For the prediction of child sexual abuse, only hypersexuality had a significant effect. Notably, after including gender in both models the effect of hypersexuality was no longer significant. Accordingly, we were able to show that the MFM is useful in explaining the propensity for deviant sexual behavior foremost in the male general population. Thus, in clinical practice an assessment of hypersexuality seems to be most relevant for the male population.

In the present study, relations between same-sex sexual behavior (SSB), age-class, and coalitional behavior in male rhesus macaques were examined in a re-analysis of data first analyzed and reported by Clive et al. (2023). Age-class as a focal variable was indicated in an extensive literature review, which showed that male non-adult (juvenile, adolescent) participation in SSB is extensive in this and related primate species and associated with various benefits. Clive et al. (2023) excluded juveniles from their analysis. In the re-analysis (n = 995 mounting events), it was found that non-adult involvement was substantial (51%). Most dyads contained at least one non-adult (76%). Young and prime adult mounters most often selected non-adults to mount. Mounters were often sexually motivated: most for adolescents (72%); equally for juveniles (57%) and adults (56%). Finally, the highest rate of SSB with coalitional context appeared in adolescent-adult dyads involved in multiple repeated mounts. SSB, age-class, special friendships, bonding, and coalitions were linked, as reported in some other primate species and human societies cross-culturally. Employing age-class in male SSB analysis improved description and explanation.

The integration of zinc nanoparticles (Zn NPs) with biochar offers a transformative approach to sustainable agriculture by enhancing plant productivity and human nutrition. This combination improves soil health, optimizes nutrient uptake, and increases resilience to environmental stressors, leading to superior crop performance. Our literature review shows that combining Zn NPs with biochar significantly boosts the crop nutrient composition, including proteins, vitamins, sugars, and secondary metabolites. This enhancement improves the plant tolerance to environmental challenges, crop quality, and shelf life. This technique addresses the global issue of Zn deficiency by biofortifying food crops with increased Zn levels, such as mung beans, lettuce, tomatoes, wheat, maize, rice, citrus, apples, and microgreens. Additionally, Zn NPs and biochar improve soil properties by enhancing water retention, cation exchange capacity (CEC), and microbial activity, making soils more fertile and productive. The porous structure of biochar facilitates the slow and sustained release of Zn, ensuring its bioavailability over extended periods and reducing the need for frequent fertilizer applications. This synergy promotes sustainable agricultural practices and reduces the environmental footprint of the traditional farming methods. However, potential ecological risks such as biomagnification, nanoparticle accumulation, and toxicity require careful consideration. Comprehensive risk assessments and management strategies are essential to ensure that agricultural benefits do not compromise the environmental or human health. Future research should focus on sustainable practices for deploying Zn NPs in agriculture, balancing food security and ecological integrity and positioning this approach as a viable solution for nutrient-efficient and sustainable agriculture.

Background: The researcher's previous study indicated that couples in a relationship where one partner is diagnosed with borderline personality disorder (BPD) experience intra- and inter-personal difficulties affecting interaction with self and others. Therefore, constructive intra- and inter-personal relationships are essential to facilitate the mental health of couples in a relationship where one partner is diagnosed with BPD. However, the concept has not been defined and applied in caring for such couples. Aim: The study aims to clarify its meaning by identifying and defining the central concept of 'facilitation of constructive intra- and inter-personal relationships'. Setting: The researcher used results from a previous study that explored the experiences of couples in a relationship where one partner is diagnosed with a mental illness to identify and define the central concept. Methods: The concept was examined using analysis, synthesis, and inductive reasoning strategies, which were applied in two phases. Results: The central concept of 'facilitation of constructive intra- and inter-personal relationships' for couples where one partner is diagnosed with BPD was identified and defined using a dictionary and subject definitions. Conclusion: Identifying and defining the central concept is essential to developing a model to facilitate constructive intra- and inter-personal relationships. Contribution: The concept 'facilitation of constructive intra- and inter-personal relationships' is unique in its form and valuable for developing a model that can be used as a guiding tool for psychiatric nurses to facilitate the mental health of such couples. Furthermore, the model could benefit other relationships experiencing intra- and inter-personal challenges.

Globally, numerous ecosystems have been co-invaded by multiple exotic plant species that can have competitive or facilitative interactions with each other and with native plants. Invaded ecosystems often exhibit spatial heterogeneity in soil moisture and nutrient levels, with some habitats having more nutrient-rich and moist soils than others. The stress-gradient hypothesis predicts that plants are likely to engage in facilitative interactions when growing in stressful environments, such as nutrient-deficient or water-deficient soils. In contrast, when resources are abundant, competitive interactions between plants should prevail. The invasional meltdown hypothesis proposes that facilitative interactions between invasive species can enhance their establishment and amplify their ecological impact. Considering both hypotheses can offer insights into the complex interactions among invasive and native plants across environmental gradients. However, experimental tests of the effects of soil moisture and nutrient co-limitation on interactions between invasive and native plants at both interspecific and intraspecific levels in light of these hypotheses are lacking. We performed a greenhouse pot experiment in which we cultivated individual focal plants from five congeneric pairs of invasive and native species. Each focal plant was subjected to one of three levels of plant-plant interactions: (1) intraspecific, in which the focal plant was grown with another individual of the same species; (2) interspecific, involving a native and an invasive plant; and (3) interspecific, involving two native or invasive individuals. These plant-plant interaction treatments were fully crossed with two levels of water availability (drought vs. well-watered) and two levels of nutrient supply (low vs. high). Consistent with the stress-gradient and invasional meltdown hypotheses, our findings show that under low-nutrient conditions, the biomass production of invasive focal plants was facilitated by invasive interspecific neighbors. However, under high-nutrient conditions, the biomass production of invasive focal plants was suppressed by invasive interspecific neighbors. When competing with native interspecific neighbors, high-nutrient conditions similarly enhanced the biomass production of both invasive and native focal plants. Invasive and native focal plants were neither competitively suppressed nor facilitated by conspecific neighbors. Taken together, these results suggest that co-occurring invasive exotic plant species may facilitate each other in low-nutrient habitats but compete in high-nutrient habitats.

A cerebellar infarct occurs when blood flow to the cerebellum, located in the posterior cranial fossa, is disrupted. This diminished blood supply leads to decreased oxygen delivery, resulting in motor and balance control impairments. One prevalent sign of neurodegenerative diseases is dysphagia, which is typically linked to a higher death rate. No systematic and uniform assessment of dysphagia is used in the clinical care environment of individuals with ataxia. Its effect on the quality of life associated with health in patients is little understood. Therefore, this case report works to address dysphagia in cerebellar ataxia. This case report examines the physiotherapy management of a 41-year-old male who had cerebellar ataxia secondary to an infarct in the bilateral cerebellar hemisphere and vermis. The rehabilitation period lasted for six weeks. On examination, the patient had difficulty swallowing and showed symptoms of cerebellar dysfunctions, such as nystagmus, dyssynergia, dysmetria, and dysdiadochokinesia. Neuro-physiotherapy interventions, like conventional physiotherapy, trunk, and pelvis proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF), Kinesio taping for dysphagia, interventions to treat gait, balance training interventions, and Frenkel's exercises were commenced. The outcome measures were evaluated using standardized outcome measures like the Swallowing Quality of Life Scale (SWAL-QOL), Severity of Ataxia Scale (SARA), Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS), Berg Balance Scale (BBS), Barthel Index, and World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHO-QOL). We conclude that a properly structured physiotherapy program subsequently improved the symptoms of patients. Furthermore, it enhanced functional independence, which subsequently improved the patient's quality of life.

Since the discovery of the pre-Bötzinger Complex (preBötC) as a crucial region for generating the main respiratory rhythm, our understanding of its cellular and molecular aspects has rapidly increased within the last few decades. It is now apparent that preBötC is a highly flexible neuronal network that reconfigures state-dependently to produce the most appropriate respiratory output in response to various metabolic challenges, such as hypoxia. However, the responses of the preBötC to hypoxic conditions can be varied based on the intensity, pattern, and duration of the hypoxic challenge. This review discusses the preBötC response to hypoxic challenges at the cellular and network level. Particularly, the involvement of preBötC in the classical biphasic response of the respiratory network to acute hypoxia is illuminated. Furthermore, the article discusses the functional and structural changes of preBötC neurons following intermittent and sustained hypoxic challenges. Accumulating evidence shows that the preBötC neural circuits undergo substantial changes following hypoxia and contribute to several types of the respiratory system's hypoxic ventilatory responses.

Background: Clinical accompaniment is an activity predominantly supervised by the clinical facilitator to develop the skills of the students. In South Africa, clinical accompaniment aims to develop the skills of the students to equip them in delivering efficient health services to the patients. Previous studies revealed that students experienced challenges and were negatively affected due to inadequate clinical accompaniment in the learning practice. Aim: The aim was to determine the challenges faced by University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) undergraduate nursing students during their clinical accompaniment. Methods: An observational cross-sectional study design, with an analytic component was implemented. Questionnaires were used to collect data. Of the 400 registered nursing students, 245 were undergraduates; of these, 241 consented to participate in this study. Data captured into SPSS Statistics Package V28. ANOVA were used in comparing challenges amongst participants. A p-value less than 0.05 was considered significant. Results: A total of 241 participants responded to the questionnaires, which yielded a response rate of 98.4%. This study comprised first-year (32.4%), second-year (32.8%) and third-year (34.9%) students. There was no remarkable difference in terms of challenges amongst study participants (1st; 2nd; 3rd), p=0.592. Conclusion: This study revealed the challenges faced by undergraduate nursing students during their clinical accompaniment. Contribution: Study results might assist in developing effective guidelines to resolve the challenges encountered by students.

Death Cafes (DCs) explicitly encourage conversation and constitute space to explore the dialogue around death and dying. This study draws on scholarship from communication and dialogue theory to explore the design features and facilitation practices used within DC meetings. Through qualitative analysis of the DC webpage and interviews with facilitators, the study uncovers how DC facilitators structure and manage conversations to help attendees normalize death conversations and manage the death anxiety of others in their lives. The analysis highlights three main tensions within the DC structure and facilitation guidelines: structure versus openness, authority versus equality, and conversation versus information. These fundamental contradictions are inherent in DCs, and facilitators need to manage them in order to promote meaningful dialogue among DC participants. This study deepens the theorizing around DC facilitation practices and has implications for death and dying practitioners hoping to foster dialogue about end-of-life topics.

The influence of ecosystem engineers on habitats and communities is commonly acknowledged in a site-bounded context, i.e. in places directly affected by the presence of the focal species. However, the spatial extent of the effects of such engineering is poorly understood, raising the question as to what impact they have on ecosystems situated beyond the species' direct influence. Beavers Castor spp., iconic ecosystem engineers, are capable of significantly transforming aquatic ecosystems. Their presence boosts biodiversity in adjacent aquatic and riparian habitats, but as a result of cascading processes, beavers may affect terrestrial habitats situated beyond the range of their immediate activity. Our study investigates the breeding bird assemblage along a spatial gradient from the water to the forest interior on central European watercourses modified and unmodified by beavers. The results show that beaver sites are characterized by a higher species richness and abundance of breeding birds than unmodified watercourses. Such sites also host a different species pool, as 27 % of the recorded bird species occurred exclusively on the beaver sites. The effect of the beaver's presence on the bird assemblage extended to adjacent terrestrial habitats located up to 100 m from the water's edge, where the species richness and abundance was higher and the species composition was substantially modified. We also found a positive correlation between the total area of beaver wetland and the numbers of bird species and individuals recorded. Our study adds to the general understanding of the spatial context of the ecosystem engineering concept, as the changes brought about by engineers have an influence beyond the area of their immediate occurrence. Our work also has implications for landscape planning and management, where existing beaver sites with terrestrial buffer zones may constitute a network of biodiversity hotspots.

A Disintegrin And Metalloproteinase 10 (ADAM10) plays a pivotal role in shaping neuronal networks by orchestrating the activity of numerous membrane proteins through the shedding of their extracellular domains. Despite its significance in the brain, the specific cellular localization of ADAM10 remains not well understood due to a lack of appropriate tools. Here, using a specific ADAM10 antibody suitable for immunostainings, we observed that ADAM10 is localized to presynapses and especially enriched at presynaptic vesicles of mossy fiber (MF)-CA3 synapses in the hippocampus. These synapses undergo pronounced frequency facilitation of neurotransmitter release, a process that play critical roles in information transfer and neural computation. We demonstrate, that in conditional ADAM10 knockout mice the ability of MF synapses to undergo this type of synaptic plasticity is greatly reduced. The loss of facilitation depends on the cytosolic domain of ADAM10 and association with the calcium sensor synaptotagmin 7 rather than ADAM10's proteolytic activity. Our findings unveil a new role of ADAM10 in the regulation of synaptic vesicle exocytosis.

Shellfish ecosystems facilitate important ecological functions and communities, but overexploitation and mismanagement have contributed to their decline worldwide. Within recent decades, coastal management efforts have increasingly sought to understand and reinstate valuable ecological functions provided by habitat-forming bivalves including oysters, mussels and pinnids. However, many bivalve species are critically understudied, limiting restoration and ecological engineering opportunities. Pinnids, specifically, are an underappreciated bivalve group, with razor clams (Pinna bicolor) forming dense aggregations, and potentially supporting important ecological functions. This study, conducted in an urban Australian estuary, was a manipulative experiment that investigated whether artificial razor clam shells could facilitate beneficial ecological functions through the provision of structural habitat. Specifically, we investigated the influence of intertidal benthic structures, including the micro-habitat influences of surface structure associated with mortality status (open or closed shell), and the short-term response of the benthic and epifaunal communities. Within 12 weeks, the structural razor clam mimics rapidly changed the aboveground ecological community, relative to the bare habitat controls. Both open and closed artificial shells provided a settlement surface for epiphytic organisms and supported enhanced epifaunal biodiversity. Contrastingly, the artificial structures did not significantly alter sediment characteristics or infaunal macroinvertebrate composition in the surrounding benthos. These results provide important insights into the rapid ecological response to the installation of intertidal pinnid structures in dynamic estuarine ecosystems. Furthermore, we provide a case study for understanding the ecological functions of an understudied habitat-forming species, which could be used to inform future restoration and management efforts.

Theory questions the persistence of nonreciprocal interactions in which one plant has a positive net effect on a neighbor that, in return, has a negative net impact on its benefactor - a phenomenon known as antagonistic facilitation. We develop a spatially explicit consumer-resource model for belowground plant competition between ecosystem engineers, plants able to mine resources and make them available for any other plant in the community, and exploiters. We use the model to determine in what environmental conditions antagonistic facilitation via soil-resource engineering emerges as an optimal strategy. Antagonistic facilitation emerges in stressful environments where ecosystem engineers' self-benefits from mining resources outweigh the competition with opportunistic neighbors. Among all potential causes of stress considered in the model, the key environmental parameter driving changes in the interaction between plants is the proportion of the resource that becomes readily available for plant consumption in the absence of any mining activity. Our results align with theories of primary succession and the stress gradient hypothesis. However, we find that the total root biomass and its spatial allocation through the root system, often used to measure the sign of the interaction between plants, do not predict facilitation reliably.

Conceptual preparation is the very initial step in language production. Endogenous semantic variables, reflecting the inherent semantic properties of concepts, could influence the productive lexical retrieval by modulating both conceptual activation and lexical selection. Yet, empirical understandings on this process and underlying mechanisms remain limited. Here, inspired by previous theoretical models and preliminary findings, we proposed a Behavioral-Neural Dual Swinging Model (DSM), revealing the swinging process between conceptual facilitation and lexical interference and extending to neural resource allocation during these processes. To further test the model, we examined the joint effect of semantic richness and semantic density on productive word retrieval both behaviorally and neurally, using a picture naming paradigm. Results nicely support the DSM by showing that the productive retrieval is driven by the swinging between semantic richness-induced conceptual facilitation primarily managed in semantic-related regions and semantic density-induced lexical interference managed in control-related regions. Moreover, the conceptual facilitation accumulated from semantic richness plays a decisive role, mitigating interference from competitors as well as the neural demands in control-related regions.

Background: Substance use disorders (SUDs) have a serious adverse impact on the physical and mental well-being of people with HIV. Previously, using a 39-site dual-randomized type 2 hybrid trial design, findings from the Substance Abuse Treatment to HIV Care Project supported the Implementation and Sustainment Facilitation (ISF) strategy to improve implementation and effectiveness of a motivational interviewing brief intervention (MIBI) for SUD within HIV service settings across the United States (US). Building on this trial, this parallel cluster-randomized type 3 hybrid trial aimed to test the incremental effectiveness of a pay-for-performance (P4P), a form of the "alter incentive/allowance structures" strategy. Methods: Twenty-six HIV service organizations, their staff participants (N=87), and their client participants (N=341) were cluster-randomized to one of two implementation conditions. The control condition included staff-focused training, feedback, and consultation (TFC) and team-focused implementation and sustainment (ISF). The experimental condition included TFC+ISF as well as P4P (TFC+ISF+P4P). P4P used financial incentives to reward MIBI implementation (US$10 per MIBI delivered) and MIBI implementation at or above a pre-defined level of quality (US$10 per demonstration). In addition to these outcomes, past 4-week changes/reductions in client participant's days of primary substance use and anxiety symptoms were examined. Results: The addition of P4P had a large and significant effect on the number of MIBIs implemented (d=1.30, p<.05) and reduction in anxiety (d=-1.54), but there was no impact on days of substance use. P4P had large effects on MIBI quality (d=1.24) and MIBI implementation effectiveness (d=1.28), but these were not significant (p<.10). Conclusions: P4P is a form of the "alter incentive/allowance structures" strategy. Its function is to reward the implementation of a clinical innovation. Rewarding implementation is consistent with the theory of implementation effectiveness, which suggests implementation climate (i.e., the extent to which implementation is expected, supported, and rewarded) is a key antecedent of implementation effectiveness (i.e., the consistency and quality of implementation). We found that P4P had a significant, positive impact on MIBI implementation in HIV service settings, but client-level outcomes were mixed. Future research should examine the effectiveness of the P4P strategy to improve implementation and sustainment of other evidence-based innovations. INTRODUCTION: Subjective cognitive decline (SCD) refers to individuals' perceived decline in memory and/or other cognitive abilities relative to their previous level of performance. Sensory decline is one of the main manifestations of decline in older adults with SCD. The efficient integration of visual and auditory information, known as audiovisual integration, is a crucial perceptual process. This study aims to evaluate audiovisual integration in older adults with SCD. METHODS: We adopted the audiovisual detection task, the Colavita task, and the Sound-Induced Flash Illusion (SIFI) task to evaluate the audiovisual integration by examining both redundant and illusory effects. Older adults diagnosed with SCD (N = 50, mean age = 67.8 years) and a control group of non-SCD older adults (N = 51, mean age = 66.5 years) were recruited. All participants took part in the three aforementioned experiments. RESULTS: The outcomes showed that a redundant effect occurred in both SCD and non-SCD older adults, with SCD older adults gaining more benefits in audiovisual detection task. Moreover, an equivalent amount of the visual dominance effect was observed among both SCD and non-SCD older adults in Colavita task. In addition, older adults with SCD perceived an equal fission illusion but a bigger fusion illusion compared with non-SCD older adults in SIFI task. CONCLUSIONS: Overall, older adults with SCD exhibit increased audiovisual redundant effects and stronger fusion illusion susceptibility compared to non-SCD older adults. Besides, visual dominance was observed in both groups via the Colavita task, with no significant difference between non-SCD and SCD older adults. These findings implied that audiovisual integration might offer a potential way for the identification of SCD.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Pollination failure occurs from insufficient pollen quantity or quality. However, the relative contributions of pollen quantity vs quality to overall pollen limitation, and how this is affected by the co-flowering context, remain unknown for most plant populations. Here, we studied patterns of pollen deposition and pollen tube formation across populations of four predominately outcrossing species in the genus Clarkia to evaluate how richness of co-flowering congeners affects the contribution of pollen quantity and quality to pollen limitation. METHODS: We partition variation in pollen deposition and pollen tube production across individuals, populations and species to identify the main sources of variation in components of reproductive success. We further quantify the relative contribution of pollen quantity and quality limitation to the reproductive success of the four Clarkia species using piecewise regression analyses. Finally, we evaluate how variation in the number of co-flowering Clarkia species in the community affects the strength of pollen quality and quality limitation. RESULTS: Across all contexts, pollen deposition and the proportion of pollen tubes produced varied greatly among individuals, populations, and species, and these were not always correlated. For instance, C. xantiana received the smallest pollen loads yet produced the highest proportion of pollen tubes, while C. speciosa exhibited the opposite pattern. Yet, co-flowering richness had variable effects on the strength of pollen quantity and quality limitation among populations. Specifically, breakpoint values, which are an indicator of overall pollen limitation, were two times larger in the four-species community compared with one and two-species communities for two Clarkia species, suggesting that pollen limitation can increase with increasing richness of co-flowering congeners. CONCLUSIONS: Our results reveal a complex interplay between quantity and quality of pollen limitation and co-flowering context that may have different evolutionary outcomes across species and populations.
