RESUMEN

Papillary adenomas, known precursors to papillary adenocarcinoma, warrant close monitoring due to their malignant potential. Historically, surgical resection represented the mainstay of treatment for papillary adenomas with intraductal extension. However, recent advancements in endoscopic techniques have facilitated the adoption of endoscopic papillectomy as a minimally invasive alternative in carefully selected cases. We report a case of an 82-year-old woman with a diagnosis of papillary adenoma exhibiting intraductal extension. This was managed with a novel endoscopic technique, balloon catheter-assisted endoscopic resection. Due to the obscured intraductal component of the papillary mass, a balloon occlusion catheter was deployed within the common bile duct and used as traction to facilitate endoscopic visualization of the mass. Endoscopic resection via papillectomy was subsequently performed. Histopathological examination of the resected specimen revealed a villous adenoma with high-grade dysplasia. Serial endoscopic ultrasound examinations with targeted papillary biopsies were performed to monitor for disease recurrence.

Resumen Introducción: La biodiversidad se está perdiendo a un ritmo acelerado como resultado del cambio global. Herramientas como los modelos de distribución de especies (MDEs) han sido ampliamente usados para mejorar el conocimiento sobre el estado de conservación de las especies y ayudar a desarrollar estrategias de gestión para mitigar la pérdida de biodiversidad. Objetivo: Determinar cómo la distribución potencial predicha por los MDEs para ocho especies de murciélagos amenazados difiere de los mapas de distribución reportados por la UICN. También, inferir el área de distribución y estado de endemismo de cada especie, y evaluar la importancia de la región tumbesina para su conservación. Métodos: Basados en registros de presencia del rango global de las especies, usamos MDEs para evaluar el estado de conservación de estas ocho especies en la región tumbesina de Ecuador y Perú. Resultados: Las áreas estimadas por los MDEs eran 35-78 % más pequeñas para cuatro especies (Eptesicus innoxius, Lophostoma occidentale, Platalina genovensium y Lonchophylla hesperia) y 26-1 600 % más grandes para tres especies (Amorphochilus schnablii, Promops davisoni y Rhogeessa velilla) que aquellas reportadas por la UICN. Para Tomopeas ravus, el área estimada por el MDE y la UICN fue similar, pero difirió en la distribución espacial. Los MDEs coincidieron con áreas de endemismo informadas por autores previos para E. innoxius, R. velilla y T. ravus, pero fueron diferentes para A. schnablii, P. genovensium, P. davisoni y L. hesperia, debido en parte a las distribuciones proyectadas para estas últimas especies en valles secos interandinos según los MDEs. Conclusiones: La región tumbesina representa una porción significativa (40-96 %) de la distribución predicha de siete de las ocho especies estudiadas, subrayando la importancia de esta región para la conservación de murciélagos. Nuestros resultados muestran las probables distribuciones para estas especies y proporcionan una base importante para identificar vacíos de investigación y desarrollar medidas de conservación para murciélagos amenazados en el punto caliente de biodiversidad de Tumbes.


Abstract Introduction: Biodiversity is being lost at an accelerating rate because of global change. Tools such as species distribution models (SDMs) have been widely used to improve knowledge about species' conservation status and help develop management strategies to mitigate biodiversity loss. SDMs are especially important for species with restricted distributions, such as endemic species. Objective: To determine how potential distribution predicted by SDMs for eight threatened bat species differed from the distribution maps reported by the IUCN. Also, to infer the area of distribution and state of endemism of each specie, and to evaluate the importance of the Tumbesian region for their conservation. Methods: Based on presence records across the species' entire ranges, we used SDMs to assess the conservation status of these eight species in the Tumbesian region of Ecuador and Peru. Results: The areas estimated by SDMs were 35-78 % smaller for four species (Eptesicus innoxius, Lophostoma occidentale, Platalina genovensium and Lonchophylla hesperia) and 26-1 600 % larger for three species (Amorphochilus schnablii, Promops davisoni and Rhogeessa velilla) than those reported by the IUCN. For Tomopeas ravus, the area estimated by the SDM and IUCN was similar but differed in spatial distribution. SDMs coincided with areas of endemism reported by previous authors for E. innoxius, R. velilla, and T. ravus, but were different for A. schnablii, P. genovensium, P. davisoni, and L. hesperia, due in part to projected distributions for these latter species in dry inter-Andean valleys according to the SDMs. Conclusions: The Tumbesian region represents a significant portion (40-96 %) of the predicted distribution of seven of the eight species studied, underscoring the importance of this region for bat conservation. Our results show likely distributions for these species and provide an important basis for identifying research gaps and developing conservation measures for threatened bats in the Tumbes biodiversity hotspot.

Despite extensive research into extending human healthspan (HS) and compressing morbidity, the mechanisms underlying aging remain elusive. However, a better understanding of the genetic advantages responsible for the exceptional HS of healthy centenarians (HC), who live in good physical and mental health for one hundred or more years, could lead to innovative health-extending strategies. This review explores the role of NLRP3, a critical component of innate immunity that significantly impacts aging. It is activated by pathogen-associated signals and self-derived signals that increase with age, leading to low-grade inflammation implicated in age-related diseases. Furthermore, NLRP3 functions upstream in several molecular aging pathways, regulates cellular senescence, and may underlie the robust health observed in HC. By targeting NLRP3, mice exhibit a phenotype akin to that of HC, the HS of monkeys is extended, and aging symptoms are reversed in humans. Thus, targeting NLRP3 could offer a promising approach to extend HS. Additionally, a paradigm shift is proposed. Given that the HS of the broader population is 30 years shorter than that of HC, it is postulated that they suffer from a form of accelerated aging. The term 'auto-aging' is suggested to describe accelerated aging driven by NLRP3.

BACKGROUND: Extrathyroidal extension was related with worse survival for patients with papillary thyroid carcinoma. For its preoperative evaluation, we measured and compared the predicting value of sonographic method and ultrasonic radiomics method in nodules of papillary thyroid carcinoma. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Data from 337 nodules were included and divided into training group and validation group. For ultrasonic radiomics method, a best model was constructed based on clinical characteristics and ultrasonic radiomic features. The predicting value was calculated then. For sonographic method, the results were calculated using all samples. RESULTS: For ultrasonic radiomics method, we constructed 9 models and selected the extreme gradient boosting model for its highest accuracy (0.77) and area under curve (0.813) in validation group. The accuracy and area under curve of sonographic method was 0.70 and 0.569. Meanwhile. We found that the top-6 important features of xgboost model included no clinical characteristics, all of whom were high-dimensional radiomic features. CONCLUSIONS: The study showed the superior value of ultrasonic radiomics method to sonographic method for preoperative detection of extrathyroidal extension in papillary thyroid carcinoma. Furthermore, high-dimensional radiomic features were more important than clinical characteristics.

Using a modified proximity extension assay, total and immunoglobulin (Ig) class-specific anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibodies were sensitively and conveniently detected directly from ø1.2 mm discs cut from dried blood and saliva spots (DBS and DSS) without the need for elution. For total Ig detection, antigen probes were prepared by conjugating recombinant spike protein subunit 1 (S1-RBD) to a pair of oligonucleotides. To detect isotype-specific antibody reactivity, one antigen probe was replaced with oligonucleotide-conjugated antibodies specific for antibody isotypes. Binding of pairs of oligonucleotide-conjugated probes to antibodies in patient samples brings oligonucleotides in proximity. An added DNA polymerase uses a transient hybridization between the oligonucleotides to prime synthesis of a DNA strand, which serves as a DNA amplicon that is quantified by real-time PCR. The S1-RBD-specific IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies in DBS samples collected over the course of a first and second vaccination exhibited kinetics consistent with previous reports. Both DBS and DSS collected from 42 individuals in the autumn of 2023 showed significant level of total S1-RBD antibodies with a correlation of R = 0.70. However, levels in DSS were generally 10 to 100-fold lower than in DBS. Anti-S1-RBD IgG and IgA in DSS demonstrated a correlation of R = 0.6.

In recent times, private sector involvement in extension services delivery in Ghana has increased. We assessed farmers' willingness to pay (WTP) for private extension services. We used quantitative techniques and selected 385 farmers through multistage sampling technique. Farmers' had a good perception of private extension services because of its flexibility, availability, value for money, and acceptable rates. Income, secondary occupation, marital status, extension contact, amount of maize sold every season, and land tenure system have an effect on farmers' WTP and the amount to pay. Government policies should continue to encourage and support private sector participation in providing extension services.

Bee populations are facing numerous stressors globally, including environmental pollution by trace metals and metalloids. Understanding whether bees can detect and avoid these pollutants in their food is pivotal, as avoidance abilities may mitigate their exposure to xenobiotics. While these pollutants are known to induce sublethal effects in bees, such as disrupting physiological mechanisms, their potential impacts on locomotive abilities, fat metabolism, and reproductive physiology remain poorly understood. In this study, utilising workers of the buff-tailed bumble bee and two prevalent trace metals, namely cadmium and copper, we aimed to address these knowledge gaps for field-realistic concentrations. Our findings reveal that workers did not reject field-realistic concentrations of cadmium and copper in sucrose solutions. Moreover, they did not reject lethal concentrations of cadmium, although they rejected lethal concentrations of copper. Additionally, we observed no significant effects of field-realistic concentrations of these metals on the walking and flying activities of workers, nor on their fat metabolism and reproductive physiology. Overall, our results suggest that bumble bees may not avoid cadmium and copper at environmental concentrations, but ingestion of these metals in natural settings may not adversely affect locomotive abilities, fat metabolism, or reproductive physiology. However, given the conservative nature of our study, we still recommend future research to employ higher concentrations over longer durations to mimic conditions in heavily polluted areas (i.e., mine surrounding). Furthermore, investigations should ascertain whether field-realistic concentrations of metals exert no impact on bee larvae.

Two fenestrindane-based porous nanographenes containing four polyaromatic macrocycles in a highly twisted, basically S4-symmetric conformation were synthesized and characterized by NMR spectroscopy and mass spectrometry. Stepwise π-extension at the periphery of the fenestrindane core by a sequence of eightfold Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling, fourfold Scholl cyclodehydrogenation and another eightfold Suzuki-Miyaura reaction affords the porous nanographene precursors in good yields. In the last step, fourfold intramolecular Yamamoto coupling generates the porous nanographenes in 17-18% yield. Their optical and electronic properties were studied by UV/Vis and fluorescence spectroscopy and cyclic voltammetry. DFT calculations revealed structural details of the macrocycles. The surprisingly weak binding of these porous structures with chloride ions (K ≈ 10 M-1) is attributed to their highly twisted conformation. The title compounds represent the first porous nanographenes based on the [5.5.5.5]fenestrane motif and, at the same time, they consist of a fenestrane-like polyarylene network.

Phage therapy appears to be a promising approach to tackle multidrug-resistant bacteria, including staphylococci. However, most anti-staphylococcal phages have been characterized in Staphylococcus aureus, while a limited number of studies investigated phage activity against S. epidermidis. We studied the potential of phage training to extend the host range of two types of anti-S. aureus phages against S. epidermidis isolates. The Appelmans protocol was applied to a mixture of Kayvirus and a mixture of Silviavirus phages repeatedly exposed to seven S. epidermidis strains representative of nosocomial-associated sequence types (ST), including the world-wide disseminated ST2. We observed increased activity only for the Kayvirus mixture against two of these strains (ST2 or ST35). Phage subpopulations isolated from the training mixture using these two strains (five/strain) exhibited different evolved phenotypes, active only against their isolation strain or strains of the same ST. Of note, 16/47 ST2 strains were susceptible to one of the groups of trained phages. A comparative genomic analysis of ancestral and trained phage genomes, conducted to identify potential bacterial determinants of such specific activity, found numerous recombination events between two of the three ancestors. However, a small number of trained phage genes had nucleotide sequence modifications impacting the corresponding protein compared to ancestral phages, two to four of them per phage genome being specific of each group of phage subpopulations exhibiting different host range. The results suggest that anti-S. aureus phages can be adapted to S. epidermidis isolates but with inter- and intra-ST specificity.ImportanceS. epidermidis is increasingly recognized as a threat for public health. Its clinical importance is notably related to multidrug resistance. Phage therapy is one of the most promising alternative therapeutic strategies to antibiotics. Nonetheless, only very few phages active against this bacterial species have been described. In the present study, we showed that phage training can be used to extend the host range of polyvalent Kayvirus phages within the Staphylococcus genera to include S. epidermidis species. In the context of rapid development of phage therapy, in vitro forced adaptation of previously characterized phages could be an appealing alternative to fastidious repeated isolation of new phages to improve the therapeutic potential of a phage collection.

To investigate the effects of high temperature and carbon fiber-bar reinforcement on the dynamic mechanical properties of concrete materials, a muffle furnace was used to treat two kinds of specimens, plain and carbon fiber-bar reinforced concrete, at high temperatures of 25, 200, 400 and 600 °C. Impact compression tests were carried out on two specimens after high-temperature exposure using a Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) test setup combined with a high-speed camera device to observe the crack extension process of the specimens. The effects of high temperature and carbon fiber-bar reinforcement on the peak stress, energy dissipation density, crack propagation and fractal dimension of the concrete were analyzed. The results showed that the corresponding peak strengths of the plain concrete specimens at 25, 200, 400, and 600 °C were 88.37, 93.21, 68.85, and 54.90 MPa, respectively, and the peak strengths after the high-temperature exposure first increased slightly and then decreased rapidly. The mean peak strengths corresponding to the carbon fiber-bar reinforced concrete specimens after high-temperature action at 25, 200, 400, and 600 °C are 1.13, 1.13, 1.21, and 1.19 times that of plain concrete, respectively, and the mean crushing energy consumption densities are 1.27, 1.31, 1.73, and 1.59 times that of plain concrete, respectively. The addition of carbon fiber-bar reinforcement significantly enhanced the impact resistance and energy dissipation of the concrete structure, and the higher the temperature was, the more significant the increase. An increase in temperature increases the number of crack extensions and width, and the high tensile strength of the carbon fiber-bar reinforcement and the synergistic effect with the concrete material reduce the degree of crack extension in the specimen. The fractal dimension of the concrete ranged from 1.92 to 2.68, that of the carbon fiber-bar reinforced concrete specimens ranged from 1.61 to 2.42, and the mean values of the corresponding fractal dimensions of the plain concrete specimens after high-temperature effects at 25, 200, 400, and 600 °C were 1.19, 1.21, 1.10, and 1.11 times those of the fiber-reinforced concrete specimens, respectively. The incorporation of carbon fiber-bar reinforcement reduces the degree of rupture and fragmentation of concrete under impact loading and improves the safety and stability of concrete structures.

Introduction: Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCMs) are pathologic lesions comprised of clusters of thin-walled capillaries characterized by abnormal proliferation, angiogenesis, and bleeding secondary to somatic or germline mutations in endothelial cells. CCMs can cause headaches, seizures and/or neurological defects. There is a clinical need to develop better tools to detect CCMs and follow their progression in conjunction with the current use of neuroimaging techniques. Here we present data supporting the utility of LOX-1 (lectin-type oxidized LDL receptor 1), a 50 kDa transmembrane protein implicated in endothelial cell dysfunction and ischemia, as a putative biomarker for CCM. Methods: CCM urine samples (n = 23) were collected from pediatric CCM patients. Matched healthy controls (n = 24) were collected from pediatric patients with either Chiari I malformation or fatty filum terminale, and otherwise normal findings. All samples were collected with patient/family consent and institutional review board approval.Samples were analyzed with Olink Proteomic Proximity Extension Assay (PEA). Differences in expression for 2,925 unique proteins were quantified between healthy control urine samples and CCM urine samples. The results were normalized, validated, and analyzed for demographic bias. In addition to urine samples, CCM tissue from patients was harvested and used to create primary cell lines for in vitro analysis of LOX-1 expression, in addition to immunofluorescence of lesional tissue excised at surgery. Results: ANOVA analysis of the CCM urine samples showed a statistically significant increase in LOX-1 compared to the control samples, with CCM patients exhibiting a > 5-fold increase in urinary expression. Corroborating these elevated levels of circulating marker, analysis of source tissue from surgically resected CCMs revealed that LOX-1 is increased in both CCM patient cavernoma primary cell lines and operative specimens. Conclusion: LOX-1 is involved with pathways implicated in CCM pathogenesis and our data here reveals that LOX-1 expression is significantly elevated in CCM patients as compared to matched healthy control individuals, including both source tissue from surgically excised CCMs and in analysis of samples collected from outside of the central nervous system, particularly urine. This proof-of-principle data suggests that LOX-1 may have potential utility as a target for CCM treatment and supports further investigation related to its potential mechanistic impact on CCM pathogenesis.

BACKGROUND: Emergence of coronary giant pseudoaneurysm (PSA) after stent implantation is potentially catastrophic and may end up with life threatening complications if not managed promptly. There is scarcity of data in existing literature with respect to guidelines on the management of coronary PSA following stent implantation. We report the recurrence of coronary PSA following initial percutaneous management of a giant coronary PSA using multiple stent grafts. CASE PRESENTATION: A 38-year-old male who underwent primary angioplasty of the right coronary artery (RCA) about a month back, presented with dull aching precordial chest pain for the last 15 days. A repeat coronary angiography revealed giant coronary PSA in proximal to mid RCA. Considering the significantly large size of the coronary PSA with symptoms of impending rupture, the giant coronary PSA was successfully excluded by implanting three sequentially coronary stent grafts. However, after one and a half months, the patient again presented with a similar kind of dull aching chest pain. We found a recurrence of coronary PSA in a segment of the coronary artery distal to the portion excluded by stent grafts. This recurrent coronary PSA was once again successfully excluded by redeploying two more stent grafts with the help of a guide extension catheter. CONCLUSIONS: In this case, vessel wall injury as a result of aggressive post dilatation using an oversized balloon during the index procedure was the contributor to the giant coronary PSA formation. It usually appears early after the index procedure (within 4 weeks). Though the usual strategy used to exclude coronary aneurysm is by using the minimal number of stent grafts (due to the inherent increased risk of restenosis/thrombosis in stent grafts) in post angioplasty traumatic aneurysm it is prudent to exclude the entire damaged artery by placing stent grafts to prevent recurrence in segments with even minimal dilatation on initial evaluation.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to validate a previously published risk model (RM) which combines clinical and multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) parameters to predict extraprostatic extension (EPE) of prostate cancer (PC) prior to radical prostatectomy (RP). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A previously published RM combining clinical with mpMRI parameters including European Society of Urogenital Radiology (ESUR) classification for EPE was retrospectively evaluated in a cohort of two urological university hospitals in Germany. Consecutive patients (n = 205, January 2015 -June 2021) with available preoperative MRI images, clinical information including PSA, prostate volume, ESUR classification for EPE, histopathological results of MRI-fusion biopsy and RP specimen were included. Validation was performed by receiver operating characteristic analysis and calibration plots. The RM's performance was compared to ESUR criteria. RESULTS: Histopathological T3 stage was detected in 43% of the patients (n = 89); 45% at Essen and 42% at Düsseldorf. Discrimination performance between pT2 and pT3 of the RM in the entire cohort was AUC = 0.86 (AUC = 0.88 at site 1 and AUC = 0.85 at site 2). Calibration was good over the entire probability range. The discrimination performance of ESUR classification alone was comparable (AUC = 0.87). CONCLUSIONS: The RM showed good discriminative performance to predict EPE for decision-making for RP as a patient-tailored risk stratification. However, when experienced MRI reading is available, standardized MRI reading with ESUR scoring is comparable regarding information outcome. A main limitation is the potentially limited transferability to other populations because of the high prevalence of EPE in our subgroups.

A brain-computer interface could control a bionic hand by interpreting electroencephalographic (EEG) signals associated with wrist extension (WE) and wrist flexion (WF) movements. Misinterpretations of the EEG may stem from variations in the force, speed and range of these movements. To address this, we designed, constructed and tested a novel dynamometer, the IsoReg, which regulates WE and WF movements during EEG recording experiments. The IsoReg restricts hand movements to isometric WE and WF, controlling their speed and range of motion. It measures movement force using a dual-load cell system that calculates the percentage of maximum voluntary contraction and displays it to help users control movement force. Linearity and measurement accuracy were tested, and the IsoReg's performance was evaluated under typical EEG experimental conditions with 14 participants. The IsoReg demonstrated consistent linearity between applied and measured forces across the required force range, with a mean accuracy of 97% across all participants. The visual force gauge provided normalised force measurements with a mean accuracy exceeding 98.66% across all participants. All participants successfully controlled the motor tasks at the correct relative forces (with a mean accuracy of 89.90%) using the IsoReg, eliminating the impact of inherent force differences between typical WE and WF movements on the EEG analysis. The IsoReg offers a low-cost method for measuring and regulating movements in future neuromuscular studies, potentially leading to improved neural signal interpretation.

To stay up-to-date with the demographics, interests, and needs of the equine community, equine extension programs commonly conduct so called "needs assessment surveys". The main goals of the 2022 Rutgers Equine Science Center (ESC) needs assessment survey were to: 1) characterize the equine community, 2) identify information sources used by the equine community, 3) assess the usefulness of selected equine-related services and programs, and 4) determine the perceived importance of selected equine-related issues. An anonymous online survey was distributed through the Rutgers ESC's email list, a press release, and social media. Analysis-eligible surveys were received from n = 493. Most participants were female (92.7%), 36-60 years of age (48.4%), white (88.8%), and horse owners (87.8%). The top three sources of equine-related information used were 1) personal knowledge (95.7%), 2) the veterinarian (93.7%), and 3) the farrier (83.7%). The survey showed that the provision of horse health information is the most useful service that the Rutgers ESC specifically can provide (79.3%). This service may also be most useful for other extension programs, but a follow-up study is needed for clarification. The five equine-related issues most often considered to be extremely important were "Lameness and Soundness" (76.5%), "Ethical Use of Horses" (73.2%), "Nutrition" (63.9%), "Right to Farm" (56.8%), and "Care of Old Horses" (55.6%). The survey provided insights into the current demographics of the equine community, highlighted personal knowledge, veterinarians and farriers as important information sources, and elucidated "Lameness and Soundness" as the most important equine-related issue.

BACKGROUND: Focal pancreatic parenchymal atrophy (FPPA) and upstream pancreatic atrophy (UPA) may indicate the presence of early pancreatic cancer. In early pancreatic cancer, the tumor occasionally spreads laterally along the main pancreatic duct, presenting challenges in determining the extent of surgical resection. This study aimed to investigate the association of pancreatic atrophy pattern and intraductal cancer extension. METHODS: Thirty-two patients with early-stage pancreatic cancer who underwent surgery at five participating centers were enrolled. Pancreatic atrophy was defined as the narrowing of parenchyma compared to the surrounding parenchyma and was classified as either FPPA (partial atrophy surrounding the pancreatic duct stenosis) or UPA (global atrophy caudal to the site of duct stenosis). Intraductal cancer extension was defined as an extension exceeding 10 mm. RESULTS: Preoperative computed tomography revealed FPPA, UPA, and no parenchymal atrophy in 13, 13, and 6 patients. Cases with FPPA or UPA showed significantly longer cancer extensions than those without atrophy (P = 0.005 and P = 0.03, respectively). Intraductal cancer extension was present in all but one case of FPPA. 69% (9/13) of the cases with UPA showed intraductal cancer extension, whereas cases without atrophy showed no intraductal cancer extension. Importantly, two patients with FPPA or UPA showed positive resection margins during surgery and three patients with FPPA or UPA showed recurrence in the remnant pancreas. CONCLUSIONS: The presence of FPPA and UPA indicates lateral cancer extension in early-stage pancreatic cancer. Preoperative assessment of the pancreatic parenchyma may provide valuable insights for determining the extent of surgical resection.

RESUMEN

In response to the practical demands for data sharing and exchange in the field of rack railway systems engineering, as well as to address the gaps in the rack railway domain within the framework of the IFC4 standard, we extend and define the rack railway domain through entity extension and custom attribute sets. By utilizing the ongoing construction of the Dujiangyan to Mount Siguniang Railway as a case study, we validate the utility of this IFC extension and modeling approach. Leveraging IfcOpenShell, we incorporate the extended data content into the generated IFC file. We present a process for extension tailored to the characteristics of rack railway engineering. This study aims to provide broader information support for the digital construction of track structures in the design phase of rack railway engineering and to facilitate more efficient data exchange and sharing.

Despite the proliferation of multiple resonance (MR) materials in the blue to green spectral ranges, red MR emitters remain scarce in the literature, an area that certainly warrants attention for future applications. Here, through a clever application of classic Clar's aromatic π-sextet rule, we triumphantly constructed the first red MR emitter by substituting the conventional benzene ring core with anthracene (fewer π-sextets). Theoretical studies indicate that the quantity of π-sextets ultimately determines the optical bandgap of a molecule, rather than the number of fused benzene rings. Benefiting from the high photoluminescence quantum yield of ~94% and horizontal dipole ratio of ~90%, the corresponding narrowband red (luminescence wavelength: 608 nm) organic light-emitting diode shows a high external quantum efficiency of 27.3%, with only a slight decrease of 3.7% at an elevated luminance level of 100,000 cd/m2.
