RESUMEN

Furniture is identified as a vital volatile organic compound (VOC) emission source in the indoor environment. Leather has become the most common raw and auxiliary fabric material for upholstered furniture, particularly with extensive consumption in sofas, due to its abundant resources and efficient functions. Despite being widely traded across the world, little research has been conducted on the VOCs released by leather materials and their health risk assessment in the indoor environment. Accordingly, this study investigated the VOC emissions of leather with different grades and the health risk of the inhalation exposure. Based on the ultra-fast gas phase electronic nose (EN) and GC-FID/Qtof, the substantial emissions of aliphatic aldehyde ketones (Aks), particularly hexanal, appear to be the cause of off-flavor in medium and low grade (MG and LG) sofa leathers. The health risk assessment indicated that leather materials barely pose non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic effects to residents. Given the abundance of VOC sources and the accumulation of health risks in the indoor environment, more stringent specifications concerning qualitative and quantitative content should be extended to provide VOC treatment basic for the manufacturing industry and obtain better indoor air quality.

A series of x%Ho3+, 5 %Tm3+, y%Yb3+:Bi2WO6 (x = 0, 0.5, 1, 3, 5; y = 0.5, 1, 3) luminescent materials was prepared using a high-temperature solid-phase method. The microstructure, up-conversion luminescence, and temperature sensing properties of the synthesized powders were analyzed. X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that doping with Ho3+, Tm3+, and Yb3+ ions at certain concentrations did not affect the orthorhombic crystal structure of the Bi2WO6 host. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that the morphology of the sample consisted of lumpy particles with a particle size range of 1-5 µm and agglomeration. SEM mapping and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy analyses revealed that each element was relatively uniformly distributed on the particle surface. Under 980 nm excitation (380 mW), the strongest luminescence of the sample was obtained when both Ho3+ and Yb3+ doping concentrations were 1 %. Compared with the luminescence of the 5 %Tm3+ and 1 %Yb3+:Bi2WO6 sample, with increasing Ho3+ concentrations, the luminescence intensity of Tm3+ was first enhanced and subsequently weakened, whereas the luminescence of Ho3+ was significantly weakened, which indicates the positive energy transfer from Ho3+ â†’ Tm3+. At 980 nm (80-380 mW), for the 1 %Ho3+, 5 %Tm3+, and 1 %Yb3+:Bi2WO6 sample, the 538 nm, 545 nm, 660 nm, and 804 nm emission peaks originated from the two-photon absorption. FIR660 nm/804 nm, FIR545 nm/804 nm, and FIR538 nm/804 nm were used to characterize the temperature and corresponded to temperature sensitivities Sr of 0.0046 K-1, 0.022 K-1 and 0.024 K-1 at 573 K, respectively. At 498 K, the minimum temperature resolution δT values were 0.03384 K, 0.03203 K and 0.04373 K. When the temperature increased from 298 K to 573 K, the powder sample luminescence gradually shifted from the yellow-green region to the red region. The results of environmental discoloration and thermochromic performance tests indicate that this sample has potential application in optical anti-counterfeiting. FIR804 nm /660 nm and FIR804 nm /538 nm were obtained for the 40 NTU turbidity suspension under identical excitation conditions. At 298 K, for the 40 NTU turbidity sample, the maximum Sr values were 0.0197 K-1 and 0.0405 K-1; at 340 K, the minimum temperature resolutions δT values were 0.54037 K and 0.66237 K. When the temperature decreased from 340 K to 298 K, the luminescence of the 40 NTU suspension samples gradually shifted from the yellow region to the green region.

Properly using controllable atmospheric containers can facilitate investigations of the survival abilities and physiological states of key and emerging-foodborne pathogens under recreated applicable food processing environmental conditions. Notably, saturated salt solutions can efficiently control relative humidity in airtight containers. This chapter describes a practical experimental setup, with necessary prerequisites for exposing foodborne pathogens to simulated and relevant food processing environmental conditions. Subsequent analyses for studying cell physiology will also be suggested.

Objetivo: analisar o empoderamento estrutural de enfermeiros em um hospital de alta complexidade. Métodos: estudo quantitativo, analítico e transversal, realizado com 93 enfermeiros, utilizando um questionário sociodemográfico e ocupacional e o Questionário de Condições de Eficácia no Trabalho II. Os dados foram coletados entre fevereiro e março de 2023. A análise dos dados deu-se por meio de estatística descritiva, teste de Kolgomorov-Smirnov, teste do qui-quadrado e regressão de Poisson. Resultados: os enfermeiros apresentaram nível moderado de empoderamento estrutural, com média de 20,67 (p<0,000). O componente mais pontuado foi a oportunidade (4,22 dp±0,80). Não foram encontradas diferenças significativas nos níveis de empoderamento estrutural relacionadas às unidades de trabalho (p-Valor 0,381), vínculo empregatício (p-Valor 0,352) e grau de instrução (p-Valor 0,839). O modelo de regressão de Poisson indica que tanto pode haver altos ou baixos níveis de empoderamento a depender do setor. Conclusão: os enfermeiros demonstraram possuir níveis moderados de empoderamento estrutural.


Objective: to analyze the structural empowerment of nurses in a high-complexity hospital. Methods: a quantitative, analytical, cross-sectional study was carried out with 93 nurses, using a sociodemographic and occupational questionnaire and the Questionnaire of Conditions of Effectiveness at Work II. The data was collected between February and March 2023. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics, the Kolgomorov-Smirnov test, the chi-square test, and Poisson regression. Results: the nurses had a moderate structural empowerment level, with a mean of 20.67 (p<0.000). The highest scoring component was opportunity (4.22 sd±0.80). No significant differences were found in the structural empowerment levels related to work units (p-Value 0.381), employment relationship (p-Value 0.352) and education level (p-Value 0.839). The Poisson regression model indicates that there can be either high or low empowerment levels depending on the sector. Conclusion: nurses showed moderate structural empowerment levels.

PURPOSE: Autistic adolescents commonly experience sleep-related difficulties and prior studies have sought to separately examine physiological and family-level predictors of their sleep quality. The current study aimed to conceptually replicate and extend to an adolescent sample a prior study that found respiratory sinus arrhythmia was associated with sleep quality in autistic children. In addition, the current study also examined whether the quality of the family environment was associated with sleep quality in autistic adolescents. METHODS: The sample consisted of 107 autistic adolescents who completed a baseline measure of respiratory sinus arrhythmia and then watched a video of their parents engaged in a discussion about a topic of disagreement while their respiratory sinus arrhythmia reactivity was measured. Adolescents also completed questionnaires measuring their sleep quality and family environment. RESULTS: In regression models, adolescents' physiological functioning was not a significant predictor of their sleep quality; however, adolescents living in poorer quality family environments reported worse sleep quality after controlling for their physiological functioning. The interaction between physiological functioning and the family environment predicting sleep quality was non-significant. CONCLUSION: Although the current study did not conceptually replicate prior work, the findings highlight the importance of the family environment for adolescents' sleep. Implications and future directions are discussed.

When an artificial structure is built in a river, the river changes significantly in water quality and hydraulic properties. In this study, the effects of the weirs constructed in the middle section of a river as a four major rivers restoration project in Korea on water quality and hydrological characteristics were analyzed. For multi-dimensional data analysis, a self-organizing map was applied, and statistical techniques including analysis of variation were used. As a result of analysis, the cross-sectional area of the river increased significantly after the construction of the weir compared to before the construction of the weir, and the flow velocity decreased at a statistically significant level. In the case of water quality, nitrogen, phosphorus, and suspended solids tended to improve after weir construction, and chlorophyll-a and bacteria tended to deteriorate. Some water quality parameters such as chlorophyll-a were also affected by seasonal influences. In order to improve the water quality deteriorated by the construction of the weir, it is necessary to consider how to improve the flow velocity of the river through partial opening or operation of the weir. In addition, in order to determine the effect of sedimentation of particulate matter due to the decrease in flow rate, it is necessary to conduct investigations on sediments around weirs in the future. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Compared to before the construction of the weir, there was no significant change in the flow rate of the river after the construction of the weir. In the case of chlorophyll-a and bacteria, the water quality was deteriorated after weir construction. To improve the deteriorated water quality, it is required to consider the fundamental management of each pollutant source and the flexible operation of both weirs. For some improved water quality parameters, further research is needed to determine whether these improvements are directly attributable to the construction of a weir.

Objective: This study aimed to document and empirically evaluate the physical environment strategies used by emergency departments (EDs) to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic; and to develop recommendations for managing future crises. Background: Emergency departments made significant environmental modifications in responding to the COVID-19 pandemic but these modifications and the decision-making processes were seldomly studied. Methods: In this in-depth qualitative case study, a multidisciplinary research team conducted semistructured interviews with 11 professionals of various roles in environmental responses to the pandemic at a large urban ED in the U.S. Qualitative content analysis generated codes and code categories from the data as well as a conceptual framework. Design documents and photographic documentation were used to cross-check the interview data. Results: The ED faced challenges in making rapid changes with limited information and resources. Physical barriers separating patients, air filtration, airflow control, and alternative care spaces were key physical environmental strategies implemented. Among them, the physical separation of patients was perceived to be most effective, followed by air quality control measures. Interviewees recommended flexibility in building design (self-contained zones, negative pressure and air filtration in all patient rooms, pandemic mode of air ventilation system), and an all-inclusive bottom-up decision-making process. Concerns included ventilation, security, communication strategies, and workplace ergonomics. Conclusion: The physical environment constitutes an important part of ED pandemic response and the proactive preparation for future crises. Hospitals should consider the ED environment's role in pandemic response, including ventilation capability, security visibility, and functionality for staff.

Using a new red blood cell (RBC) metabolite extraction protocol, we performed a metabolomic analysis on RBCs in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated or not with methotrexate (MTX), with the two following objectives: to compare the RBC metabolic profiles of MTX-naïve RA patients and healthy controls (HC), and to investigate whether RBC profiles before and after MTX treatment in RA differed between responders and non-responders. Plasma analysis was performed in parallel. Metabolites were extracted and identified in RBCs and plasma by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. We compared the metabolomic fingerprints of 31 DMARD-naïve RA patients and 39 HCs. We also compared the RBC and plasma metabolomes of 25 RA patients who responded or not to MTX therapy before (M0) and after a 3-month treatment period (M3). Significance was determined by Storey's false discovery rate (FDR) q-values to correct for multiple testing. RA patients and HCs differed in the metabolomic signature of RBCs. The signature mainly contained amino acids (AA). Eleven metabolites, including 4 metabolites belonging to the carbohydrate subclass and 2 amino acids (creatine and valine) showed accumulation in RBCs from RA patients. Conversely, citrulline (fold change = 0.83; q = 0.025), histidine (fold change = 0.86; q = 0.014) and ergothioneine (EGT) (fold change = 0.66; q = 0.024), were lower in RBC of RA patients. Five plasma metabolites, including succinic acid and hydroxyproline, were higher in RA patients, and 7 metabolites, including DHEA sulfate, alanine, threonine and ornithine, were lower. Among RA patients undergoing MTX treatment pre-treatment (M0), EGT values were significantly lower in non-responders. In conclusion, low RBC levels of EGT, a food-derived AA barely detectable in plasma, characterize DMARD naïve RA patients and lack of response to MTX treatment.

Organic additives are incorporated during the manufacturing of plastics, and these additives are gradually released into the environment from plastic debris. Among these, phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are the most prevalent. PAEs can be found in the atmosphere, aquatic ecosystems, terrestrial regions, soil, and within animal and human bodies. They are released from industrial activities and have a significant impact on the natural environment. This study reviews research on PAEs from various regions worldwide, with about 47.8 % of the studies published between 2020 and 2024. The highest concentrations of PAEs were detected in fish samples from rivers in Taiwan, ranging from 13.6 to 70.0 mg/kg dry weight. PAEs tend to accumulate more in benthic organisms and sediments. DEHP was the most prevalent PAE in fish samples, showing the highest levels and detection frequency among the analyzed PAEs. Some studies found a strong correlation (r2 = 0.85) between PAEs concentrations in fish and water. The findings of this study can help in assessing the fate and behavior of PAEs in the environment and provide a basis for developing future management strategies to control phthalate acid esters pollution in aquatic environments.

INTRODUCTION: Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli (ESBL-EC) are widespread multidrug-resistant zoonotic bacteria that threaten animal production, food safety and antimicrobial therapy worldwide including Malaysia. Poultry has been reported as one of the pathways for human exposure to ESBL-EC. There has been little research on the occurrence of ESBL-EC within the Malaysian poultry food chain. Hence, the objectives of the study were to determine the occurrence of ESBL-EC in chickens and to identify the potential risk factors associated with their occurrence in poultry farms. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 400 samples, consisting of 240 cloacal swabs from chickens and 160 from poultry farms environments in eight districts in Selangor, Malaysia using culture and disk combination methods and multiple polymerase chain reaction assays. In the determination of possible factors associated with the presence of ESBL-EC at poultry farms, a questionnaire was used to obtain the information and data. RESULTS: The findings demonstrated the wide distribution of ESBL-EC in all the farms with an overall occurrence of 37.2%. Farms in Gombak, Klang and Hulu Selangor had the highest occurrence rates at 62%, 50% and 50%, respectively, followed by farms in Petaling 38%, Sepang at 34%, Kuala Langat at 26% and Kuala Selangor at 24%, and the lowest was in Hulu Langat 14%. Among the study samples, chickens had the highest occurrence rate at 45.4%, followed by chicken house floors at 40% and flies at 30%, while feed and water samples at 17.5% and 12.5%, respectively. The present study indicated the high occurrence and wide dissemination of ESBL-EC in chickens and poultry farms environment. The ESBL-EC occurrence was associated with several factors including imprudent use of antibiotics, poor husbandry, management and biosecurity practices at the farms. CONCLUSIONS: Our study showed the presence and spread of ESBL EC among chickens in the farms and their environment; this may lead to being spread to outside of farm environment by flies, vermins, flying birds, litter and farm wastes and possibly to humans upon contact with the contaminated environment and by poultry meat. Thus, the findings of the study can assist to serve as a piece of useful information to veterinary authority in designing evidence-based mitigation strategies for the control of ESBL-EC in poultry farms.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is the leading cause of disability globally, with moderate heritability and well-established socio-environmental risk factors. Genetic studies have been mostly restricted to European settings, with polygenic scores (PGS) demonstrating low portability across diverse global populations. METHODS: This study examines genetic architecture, polygenic prediction, and socio-environmental correlates of MDD in a family-based sample of 10 032 individuals from Nepal with array genotyping data. We used genome-based restricted maximum likelihood to estimate heritability, applied S-LDXR to estimate the cross-ancestry genetic correlation between Nepalese and European samples, and modeled PGS trained on a GWAS meta-analysis of European and East Asian ancestry samples. RESULTS: We estimated the narrow-sense heritability of lifetime MDD in Nepal to be 0.26 (95% CI 0.18-0.34, p = 8.5 × 10-6). Our analysis was underpowered to estimate the cross-ancestry genetic correlation (rg = 0.26, 95% CI -0.29 to 0.81). MDD risk was associated with higher age (beta = 0.071, 95% CI 0.06-0.08), female sex (beta = 0.160, 95% CI 0.15-0.17), and childhood exposure to potentially traumatic events (beta = 0.050, 95% CI 0.03-0.07), while neither the depression PGS (beta = 0.004, 95% CI -0.004 to 0.01) or its interaction with childhood trauma (beta = 0.007, 95% CI -0.01 to 0.03) were strongly associated with MDD. CONCLUSIONS: Estimates of lifetime MDD heritability in this Nepalese sample were similar to previous European ancestry samples, but PGS trained on European data did not predict MDD in this sample. This may be due to differences in ancestry-linked causal variants, differences in depression phenotyping between the training and target data, or setting-specific environmental factors that modulate genetic effects. Additional research among under-represented global populations will ensure equitable translation of genomic findings.

BACKGROUND: Human activities have significantly contributed to a persistent climate change trend, posing substantial threats to human health. Nurses regularly interact with patients experiencing the consequences of climate change, making their engagement in addressing this issue crucial. Nonetheless, our understanding of nurses' viewpoints regarding climate change remains limited. AIM: This scoping review aims to identify practicing nurses' and nursing students' perceptions of climate change. DESIGN: To fulfil this objective, a documentary search strategy was developed using an iterative process. METHODS: The search strategy was tested in four bibliographic databases, as well as in the grey literature. A 2-stage selection process was conducted, and relevant data were extracted from selected articles for analysis. RESULTS: Twenty-two scientific articles and 11 documents from nursing associations were selected. The findings suggest that while many nurses and nursing students are concerned about climate change and its effects on their patients' health, their role in addressing the climate crisis is not well understood. Many barriers such as having a heavy workload and the lack of support hindered their ability to adjust their practice in response to the changing climate. Furthermore, many expressed a need for trainings on climate change issues. CONCLUSIONS: These results raise a great and urgent demand for these professionals to receive appropriate training to cope with climatic threats to health. Future research should focus on the development of nursing climate leadership, and healthcare organizations should support nursing initiatives and help raise nurses' awareness regarding climate change.

Objective: This study aims to identify the obstacles to recycling and environmental sustainability habits in a university hospital's operating room (OR) environment in Turkey and lay the groundwork for potential solutions. Methods: A questionnaire was used to measure current views among the 140 OR staff members aged 20-54 years. The survey assessed awareness and behaviors of recycling at home and in the OR, as well as awareness of environmentally safe anaesthesia practices. Results: Half of the participants believed that ORs significantly affected their carbon footprint, and most agreed that these environmental effects could be reduced. The primary barriers to recycling were inadequate knowledge, negative staff attitudes and insufficient services. Notably, 76% of participants paid attention to segregating OR waste, yet many lacked formal education about the environmental impact of their practices. Approximately 89% agreed that the environmental effects of ORs could be further reduced, with education being a critical need. Conclusion: The healthcare sector's contribution to carbon emissions and waste production is significant, especially in ORs. The lack of education regarding ecological implications is concerning. Implementing standardized training programs and enhancing recycling services can substantially reduce the environmental impact of ORs, highlighting the need for a more sustainable healthcare system.

Clostridioides difficile is an intestinal pathogen of humans and animals. In community-associated infections, the environment is suggested to play a significant role in overall transmission routes. Although the prevalence of C. difficile in freshwater and soil has been widely studied, little is known about its presence in sediments. In this study, we tested 15 sediment samples collected from various freshwater sources. C. difficile was isolated from all sampled sites, yielding a total of 171 strains grouped into 26 ribotypes, with 001/072 and 014/020 being the most prevalent. Genome sequencing of 37 isolates from 17 PCR ribotypes confirmed the presence of highly related strains in the geographically distant and unlinked water samples. Eight divergent PCR ribotypes from clades C-II and C-III were found in six samples. In each sample, the unbound fraction (supernatant after sediment wash) and bound fraction (sonicated sediment sample) were subjected to enrichment. Sonication was only slightly better than washing in terms of sample positivity (14 positive samples with sonication and 11 with washing). However, sonication substantially increased the diversity of the PCR ribotypes obtained (23 in sonicated samples vs nine in washed samples). In conclusion, sediments are a rich source for investigating the diversity of environmental C. difficile, including isolates from divergent lineages. Selection of the isolation method can significantly impact the diversity of captured PCR ribotypes.IMPORTANCEClostridioides difficile, a pathogenic bacterium that can cause intestinal infections in humans and animals, thrives in the gut but also disperses widely through spores found in the environment. Clinical and environmental strains often overlap with common PCR ribotypes, which are consistently isolated worldwide. Environmental studies have mostly focused on water and soil, but sediments have been very poorly studied. In this study, we investigated the presence of C. difficile in various freshwater sediments and evaluated the effectiveness of two different isolation approaches on positivity rates and strain diversity. C. difficile was found to be highly prevalent in sediments, with an isolation rate of 100%. Sonication proved to be more effective than simple washing for capturing a greater diversity of PCR ribotypes. Overall, this study underscores the widespread presence of C. difficile in freshwater sediments and emphasizes the importance of continued surveillance and monitoring to understand its ecology and transmission dynamics.

Neighborhood safety is crucial for the well-being of residents; however, longitudinal evidence is scarce. This study explored the association between neighborhood safety concerns and depressive symptoms among women. A nationally representative sample of 10,008 women was surveyed in 2016. Six dimensions of neighborhood safety concerns were assessed: crime, food, safety at night, traffic accidents, building and facility, and general safety. The total score for neighborhood safety concerns ranged from 6 to 24, with higher scores indicating greater concerns. Depressive symptoms were assessed using the 10-item version of the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression. For cross-sectional analyses, we explored how neighborhood safety concerns were associated with concurrent depressive symptoms at baseline. For the longitudinal analyses, we explored how they were associated with depressive symptom onset at the 2-year follow-up (2018) among women without depressive symptoms at baseline (n = 7,643). Logistic regressions were employed. The mean (standard deviation [SD]) of the neighborhood safety concern score was 12.7 (3.3). In the cross-sectional analysis, a 1-SD increase in neighborhood safety concern score was associated with 1.23-fold (95% CI: 1.13-1.35) increase in the odds of concurrent depressive symptoms at the baseline year. In the longitudinal analysis, a 1-SD increase in neighborhood safety concern score was associated with 1.15-fold (95% CI: 1.03-1.29) increase in the odds of experiencing the onset of depressive symptoms at the follow-up year. This study suggests that neighborhood safety concerns are risk factors for the development of depressive symptoms of female residents. Policy efforts are necessary to ensure community safety.

Background: The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for pathogen surveillance systems to augment both early warning and outbreak monitoring/control efforts. Community wastewater samples provide a rapid and accurate source of environmental surveillance data to complement direct patient sampling. Due to its global presence and critical missions, the US military is a leader in global pandemic preparedness efforts. Clinical testing for COVID-19 on US Air Force (USAF) bases (AFBs) was effective but costly with respect to direct monetary costs and indirect costs due to lost time. To remain operating at peak capacity, such bases sought a more passive surveillance option and piloted wastewater surveillance (WWS) at 17 AFBs to demonstrate feasibility, safety, utility, and cost-effectiveness from May 2021 to January 2022. Objective: We model the costs of a wastewater program for pathogens of public health concern within the specific context of US military installations using assumptions based on the results of the USAF and Joint Program Executive Office for Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Defense pilot program. The objective was to determine the cost of deploying WWS to all AFBs relative to clinical swab testing surveillance regimes. Methods: A WWS cost projection model was built based on subject matter expert input and actual costs incurred during the WWS pilot program at USAF AFBs. Several SARS-CoV-2 circulation scenarios were considered, and the costs of both WWS and clinical swab testing were projected. Analysis was conducted to determine the break-even point and how a reduction in swab testing could unlock funds to enable WWS to occur in parallel. Results: Our model confirmed that WWS is complementary and highly cost-effective when compared to existing alternative forms of biosurveillance. We found that the cost of WWS was between US $10.5-$18.5 million less expensive annually in direct costs as compared to clinical swab testing surveillance. When the indirect cost of lost work was incorporated, including lost work associated with required clinical swab testing, we estimated that over two-thirds of clinical swab testing could be maintained with no additional costs upon implementation of WWS. Conclusions: Our results support the adoption of WWS across US military installations as part of a more comprehensive and early warning system that will enable adaptive monitoring during disease outbreaks in a more cost-effective manner than swab testing alone.

BACKGROUND: In 2016, a voluntary National Healthy Food and Drink Policy was released to improve the healthiness of food and drinks for sale in New Zealand health sector organisations. The Policy aims to role model healthy eating and demonstrate commitment to health and well-being of hospital staff and visitors and the general public. This study aimed to understand the experiences of hospital food providers and public health dietitians/staff in implementing the Policy, and identify tools and resources needed to assist with the implementation. METHODS: A maximum variation purposive sampling strategy (based on a health district's population size and food outlet type) was used to recruit participants by email. Video conference or email semi-structured interviews included 15 open-ended questions that focused on awareness, understanding of, and attitudes towards the Policy; level of support received; perceived customer response; tools and resources needed to support implementation; and unintended or unforeseen consequences. Data was analysed using a reflexive thematic analysis approach. RESULTS: Twelve participants (eight food providers and four public health dietitians/staff) were interviewed; three from small (< 100,000 people), four from medium (100,000-300,000 people) and five from large (> 300,000 people) health districts. There was agreement that hospitals should role model healthy eating for the wider community. Three themes were identified relating to the implementation of the Policy: (1) Complexities of operating food outlets under a healthy food and drink policy in public health sector settings; (2) Adoption, implementation, and monitoring of the Policy as a series of incoherent ad-hoc actions; and (3) Policy is (currently) not achieving the desired impact. Concerns about increased food waste, loss of profits and an uneven playing field between food providers were related to the voluntary nature of the unsupported Policy. Three tools could enable implementation: a digital monitoring tool, a web-based database of compliant products, and customer communication materials. CONCLUSIONS: Adopting a single, mandatory Policy, provision of funding for implementation actions and supportive tools, and good communication with customers could facilitate implementation. Despite the relatively small sample size and views from only two stakeholder groups, strategies identified are relevant to policy makers, healthcare providers and public health professionals.

Viral diseases have been present throughout human history, with early examples including influenza (1500 B.C.), smallpox (1000 B.C.), and measles (200 B.C.). The term "virus" was first used in the late 1800s to describe microorganisms smaller than bacteria, and significant milestones include the discovery of the polio virus and the development of its vaccine in the mid-1900s, and the identification of HIV/AIDS in the latter part of the 20th century. The 21st century has seen the emergence of new viral diseases such as West Nile Virus, Zika, SARS, MERS, and COVID-19. Human activities, including crowding, travel, poor sanitation, and environmental changes like deforestation and climate change, significantly influence the spread of these diseases. Conversely, viral diseases can impact the environment by polluting water resources, contributing to deforestation, and reducing biodiversity. These environmental impacts are exacerbated by disruptions in global supply chains and increased demands for resources. This review highlights the intricate relationship between viral diseases and environmental factors, emphasizing how human activities and viral disease progression influence each other. The findings underscore the need for integrated approaches to address the environmental determinants of viral diseases and mitigate their impacts on both health and ecosystems.

In autonomous driving, environmental perception technology often encounters challenges such as false positives, missed detections, and low accuracy, particularly in detecting small objects and complex scenarios. Existing algorithms frequently suffer from issues like feature redundancy, insufficient contextual interaction, and inadequate information fusion, making it difficult to perform multi-task detection and segmentation efficiently. To address these challenges, this paper proposes an end-to-end multi-task environmental perception model named YOLO-Mg, designed to simultaneously perform traffic object detection, lane line detection, and drivable area segmentation. First, a multi-stage gated aggregation network (MogaNet) is employed during the feature extraction process to enhance contextual interaction by improving diversity in the channel dimension, thereby compensating for the limitations of feed-forward neural networks in contextual understanding. Second, to further improve the model's accuracy in detecting objects of various scales, a restructured weighted bidirectional feature pyramid network (BiFPN) is introduced, optimizing cross-level information fusion and enabling the model to handle object detection at different scales more accurately. Finally, the model is equipped with one detection head and two segmentation heads to achieve efficient multi-task environmental perception, ensuring the simultaneous execution of multiple tasks. The experimental results on the BDD100K dataset demonstrate that the model achieves a mean average precision (mAP50) of 81.4% in object detection, an Intersection over Union (IoU) of 28.9% in lane detection, and a mean Intersection over Union (mIoU) of 92.6% in drivable area segmentation. The tests conducted in real-world scenarios show that the model performs effectively, significantly enhancing environmental perception in autonomous driving and laying a solid foundation for safer and more reliable autonomous driving systems.

The intelligent detection of chili peppers is crucial for achieving automated operations. In complex field environments, challenges such as overlapping plants, branch occlusions, and uneven lighting make detection difficult. This study conducted comparative experiments to select the optimal detection model based on YOLOv8 and further enhanced it. The model was optimized by incorporating BiFPN, LSKNet, and FasterNet modules, followed by the addition of attention and lightweight modules such as EMBC, EMSCP, DAttention, MSBlock, and Faster. Adjustments to CIoU, Inner CIoU, Inner GIoU, and inner_mpdiou loss functions and scaling factors further improved overall performance. After optimization, the YOLOv8 model achieved precision, recall, and mAP scores of 79.0%, 75.3%, and 83.2%, respectively, representing increases of 1.1, 4.3, and 1.6 percentage points over the base model. Additionally, GFLOPs were reduced by 13.6%, the model size decreased to 66.7% of the base model, and the FPS reached 301.4. This resulted in accurate and rapid detection of chili peppers in complex field environments, providing data support and experimental references for the development of intelligent picking equipment.
