RESUMEN

Phytoextraction, utilizing plants to remove soil contaminants, is a promising approach for environmental remediation but its application is often limited due to the long time requirements. This study aims to develop simplified and user-friendly probabilistic models to estimate the time required for phytoextraction of contaminants while considering uncertainties. More specifically we: i) developed probabilistic models for time estimation, ii) applied these models using site-specific data from a field experiment testing pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo ssp. pepo cv. Howden) for phytoextraction of DDT and its metabolites (ΣDDX), iii) compared timeframes derived from site-specific data with literature-derived estimates, and iv) investigated model sensitivity and uncertainties through various modelling scenarios. The models indicate that phytoextraction with pumpkin to reduce the initial total concentration of ΣDDX in the soil (10 mg/kg dw) to acceptable levels (1 mg/kg dw) at the test site is infeasible within a reasonable timeframe, with time estimates ranging from 48-123 years based on literature data or 3 570-9 120 years with site-specific data using the linear or first-order exponential model, respectively. Our results suggest that phytoextraction may only be feasible at lower initial ΣDDX concentrations (< 5 mg/kg dw) for soil polishing and that alternative phytomanagement strategies should be considered for this test site to manage the bioavailable fraction of DDX in the soil. The simplified modes presented can be useful tools in the communication with site owners and stakeholders about time approximations for planning phytoextraction interventions, thereby improving the decision basis for phytomanagement of contaminated sites.

The organochlorine pesticide dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is an endocrine-disrupting compound (EDC) that has been banned by most countries for decades. However, it continues to be detected in nearly all humans and wildlife due to its biological and environmental persistence. The ovarian dysgenesis syndrome hypothesis speculates that exposure to EDCs during sensitive developmental windows such as early gonadal differentiation lead to reproductive disorders later in life. Yet, mechanisms by which DDT affects developing gonads remain unclear due to the inherent challenge of getting developmental exposure data from adults presenting with reproductive disease. The Japanese medaka (Oryzias latipes) is a valuable fish model for sex-specific toxicological studies due to its chromosomal sex determination, external embryonic development, short generation time, and extensively mapped genome. It is well documented that medaka exposed to DDT and its metabolites and byproducts (herein referred to as DDT+) at different developmental time points experience permanent alterations in gonadal morphology, reproductive success, and molecular and hormonal signaling. However, the overwhelming majority of studies focus primarily on functional and morphological outcomes in males and females and have rarely investigated long-term transcriptional or molecular effects. This review summarizes previous experimental findings and the state of our knowledge concerning toxic effects DDT + on reproductive development, fertility, and health in the valuable medaka model. It also identifies gaps in knowledge, emphasizing a need for more focus on molecular mechanisms of ovarian endocrine disruption using enhanced molecular tools that have become increasingly available over the past few decades. Furthermore, DDT forms a myriad of over 45 metabolites and transformation products in biota and the environment, very few of which have been evaluated for environmental abundance or health effects. This reinforces the demand for high throughput and economical in vivo models for predictive toxicology screening, and the Japanese medaka is uniquely positioned to meet this need.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) usage has been prohibited in developed nations since 1972 but is exempted for use in indoor residual spraying (IRS) in developing countries, including African countries, for malaria control. There have been no previous reviews on DDT residues in water resources in Africa. The study aimed to provide a review of available research investigating the levels of DDT residues in water sources in Africa and to assess the consequent human health risks. A scoping review of published studies in Africa was conducted through a systematic electronic search using PubMed, Web of Science, EBSCO HOST, and Scopus. A total of 24 articles were eligible and reviewed. Concentrations of DDT ranged from non-detectable levels to 81.2 µg/L. In 35% of the studies, DDT concentrations surpassed the World Health Organization (WHO) drinking water guideline of 1 µg/L in the sampled water sources. The highest DDT concentrations were found in South Africa (81.2 µg/L) and Egypt (5.62 µg/L). DDT residues were detected throughout the year in African water systems, but levels were found to be higher during the wet season. Moreover, water from taps, rivers, reservoirs, estuaries, wells, and boreholes containing DDT residues was used as drinking water. Seven studies conducted health risk assessments, with two studies identifying cancer risk values surpassing permissible thresholds in water sampled from sources designated for potable use. Non-carcinogenic health risks in the studies fell below a hazard quotient of 1. Consequently, discernible evidence of risks to human health surfaced, given that the concentration of DDT residues surpassed either the WHO drinking water guidelines or the permissible limits for cancer risk in sampled drinking sources within African water systems. Therefore, alternative methods for malaria vector control should be investigated and applied.

Environmental contamination with dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) has sever effects on the ecosystem worldwide. DDT is a recalcitrant synthetic chemical with high toxicity and lipophilicity. It is also bioaccumulated in the food chain and causes genotoxic, estrogenic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects on aquatic organisms and humans. Microbial remediation mechanism and its enzymes are very important for removing DDT from environment. DDT and its main residues dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE) and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) can biodegrade slowly in soil and water. To enhance this process, a number of strategies are proposed, such as bio-attenuation, biostimulation, bioaugmentation and the manipulation of environmental conditions to enhance the activity of microbial enzymes. The addition of organic matter and flooding of the soil enhance DDT degradation. Microbial candidates for DDT remediation include micro-algae, fungi and bacteria. This review provide brief information and recommendation on microbial DDT remediation and its mechanisms.

In ovo exposure to o,p'-dichloro-diphenyl-trichloroethane (o,p'-DDT) impairs reproduction by inducing malformation of the reproductive organs in birds, although the mechanism remains unclear. Here, we examined the effects of o,p'-DDT on the development of the reproductive organs, the expression of genes controlling sexual differentiation, and the plasma concentrations of testosterone and estradiol in Japanese quail embryos. o,p'-DDT-containing sesame oil was injected into the yolk sac on Embryonic Day (E) 3 at a dose of 500, 2,000, or 8,000 µg per egg. On E15, the reproductive organs were observed; the gonads and Müllerian ducts (MDs) were sampled to measure the mRNA of steroidogenic enzymes, sex steroid receptors, anti-Müllerian hormone (AMH), and AMH receptor 2 (AMHR2); blood samples were collected to assay plasma testosterone and estradiol levels; and the gonads were used for histological analysis. o,p'-DDT dose-dependently increased the prevalence of hypertrophic MDs in females and residual MDs in males. In female MDs, o,p'-DDT dose-dependently decreased estrogen receptor (ER) α, ERß, and AMHR2 mRNA expression. o,p'-DDT dose-dependently induced left-biased asymmetry of testis size, and ovary-like tissue was found in the left testis after exposure to 8,000 µg per egg o,p'-DDT, although asymmetric gene expression did not occur. o,p'-DDT did not affect ovarian tissue but did decrease 17α-hydroxylase/C17-20 lyase mRNA expression and dose-dependently increased ERß mRNA expression. o,p'-DDT decreased plasma testosterone concentrations in females. These findings suggest that o,p'-DDT induces hypertrophy of the MDs and ovarian tissue formation in the left testis. Abnormal MD development may be linked to altered gene expression for sensing estrogens and AMH signals.

Resumen Objetivo: Evaluar la asociación entre la exposición al p,p´-DDT y p,p´-DDE con la disrupción tiroidea durante el embarazo a través de un metaanálisis. Material y métodos: Se realizó una revisión sistemática y un meta-análisis basado en la declaración PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and MetaAnalysis). El protocolo de esta revisión se registró ante el International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) con el folio de identificación: CRD42022324797. Se llevó a cabo una búsqueda en las bases de datos electrónicas PubMed y Web of Science para identificar los estudios elegibles publicados en inglés y español hasta el 2 de enero de 2022. Mediante meta-análisis de efectos aleatorios, se estimó un coeficiente de regresión beta (β) combinado, por cada hormona del perfil tiroideo, a partir de los β publicados de cada estudio y sus intervalos de confianza del 95% (IC del 95%). Resultados: Se incluyeron ocho estudios de los cuales solamente tres reportaron biomarcadores de exposición a p,p'-DDT, por lo que no fue posible conducir metaanálisis para evaluar la relación entre este compuesto y las hormonas del perfil tiroideo. La exposición a p,p'-DDE se asoció con un ligero incremento en los niveles de TSH (β combinada= 0.05; IC95%= -0.01. 0.12) y T3 total (β combinada= 0.02; IC95%= -0.05, 0.09), pero inversamente con los niveles de la T4 total (β combinada= -0.003; IC 95%= -0.05, 0.05) y T4 libre (β combinada= -0.01; IC95%= -0.03, 0.01), aunque ninguno de estos hallazgos fue estadísticamente significativo. Conclusiones: La evidencia disponible a la fecha aún es limitada como para emitir una conclusión sobre la asociación entre las variables de interés. Dado que pequeños cambios en la homeóstasis tiroidea de mujeres embarazadas podrían tener consecuencias en el desarrollo fetal, es necesario seguir generando evidencia al respecto.


Abstract Objective: Evaluate the association between p,p´-DDT and p,p´-DDE exposure with thyroid disruption during pregnancy through meta-analysis. Material and methods: We performed a systematic review and meta-analysis based on the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA). The protocol of this review was registered in PROSPERO with the identification sheet: CRD42022324797. We conduct systematic searches in PubMed and Web of Science electronic databases to identify eligible studies published in English and Spanish up to January 2, 2022. Using random-effects meta-analysis, a beta regression coefficient was estimated (β) pooled, for each hormone of the thyroid profile, from the β published in each study and their 95% confidence intervals (95% CI). Results: Eight studies were included, of which only three reported biomarkers of exposure to p,p'-DDT, so it was not possible to conduct a meta-analysis to assess the relationship between this compound and hormones in the thyroid profile. Exposure to p,p'-DDE was associated with a slight increase in TSH (pooled β= 0.05; 95% CI= -0.01, 0.12) and total T3 (pooled β= 0.02; 95% CI= -0.05, 0.09) levels , but inversely with total T4 (β pooled= -0.003; 95% CI= -0.05, 0.05) and free T4 (β pooled= -0.01; 95% CI= -0.03, 0.01) levels, although neither of these findings was statistically significant. Conclusions: The evidence available to date is still limited to draw a conclusion on the association between the variables of interest. Since small changes in thyroid homeostasis in pregnant women could have consequences on fetal development, it is necessary to continue generating evidence in this regard.

The suitability of lake sediment cores to reconstruct past inputs, regional pollution, and usage patterns of pesticides has been shown previously. Until now, no such data exist for lakes in eastern Germany. Therefore, 10 sediment cores (length 1 m) of 10 lakes in eastern Germany, the territory of the former German Democratic Republic (GDR), were collected and cut into 5-10-mm layers. In each layer, concentrations of trace elements (TEs) As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, S, and Zn, as well as of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), i.e., dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), were analyzed. A miniaturized solid-liquid extraction technique in conjunction with headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) and gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for the latter. The progression of TE concentrations over time is uniform. It follows a trans-regional pattern and is indicative of activity and policy making in West Germany before 1990 instead of those in the GDR. Of OCPs, only transformation products of DDT were found. Congener ratios indicate a mainly aerial input. In the lakes' profiles, several regional features and responses to national policies and measures are visible. Dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (DDD) concentrations reflect the history of DDT use in the GDR. Lake sediments proved to be suitable to archive short- and long-range impacts of anthropogenic activity. Our data can be used to complement and validate other forms of environmental pollution long-term monitoring and to check for the efficiency of pollution countermeasures in the past.

Disposal of industrial and hazardous waste in the ocean was a pervasive global practice in the 20th century. Uncertainty in the quantity, location, and contents of dumped materials underscores ongoing risks to marine ecosystems and human health. This study presents an analysis of a wide-area side-scan sonar survey conducted with autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) at a dump site in the San Pedro Basin, California. Previous camera surveys located 60 barrels and other debris. Sediment analysis in the region showed varying concentrations of the insecticidal chemical dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), of which an estimated 350-700 t were discarded in the San Pedro Basin between 1947 and 1961. A lack of primary historical documents specifying DDT acid waste disposal methods has contributed to the ambiguity surrounding whether dumping occurred via bulk discharge or containerized units. Barrels and debris observed during previous surveys were used for ground truth classification algorithms based on size and acoustic intensity characteristics. Image and signal processing techniques identified over 74,000 debris targets within the survey region. Statistical, spectral, and machine learning methods characterize seabed variability and classify bottom-type. These analytical techniques combined with AUV capabilities provide a framework for efficient mapping and characterization of uncharted deep-water disposal sites.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), a persistent organic pollutant, has known effects on natural microbes. However, its effects on soil ammonia-oxidizing microbes, significant contributors to soil ammoxidation, remain unexplored. To address this, we conducted a 30-day microcosm experiment to systematically study the effects of DDT contamination on soil ammonia oxidation and the communities of ammonia-oxidizing archaea (AOA) and ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). Our findings revealed that DDT inhibited soil ammonia oxidation in the early stage (0-6 days), but it gradually recovered after 16 days. The copy numbers of amoA gene of AOA decreased in all DDT-treated groups from 2 to 10 days, while that of AOB decreased from 2 to 6 days but increased from 6 to 10 days. DDT influenced the diversity and community composition of AOA but had no significant effect on AOB. Further, the dominant AOA communities comprised uncultured_ammonia-oxidizing_crenarchaeote and Nitrososphaera sp. JG1: while the abundance of the latter significantly and negatively correlated with NH 4+-N (P ≤ 0.001), DDT (0.001 < P ≤ 0.01), and DDD (0.01 < P ≤ 0.05) and positively correlated with NO3--N (P ≤ 0.001), that of the former significantly and positively correlated with DDT (P ≤ 0.001), DDD (P ≤ 0.001), and NH 4+-N (0.01 < P ≤ 0.05) and negatively correlated with NO3--N (P ≤ 0.001). Among AOB, the dominant group was the unclassified Nitrosomonadales in Proteobacteria, which showed significant negative correlation with NH 4+-N (0.01 < P ≤ 0.05) and significant positive correlation with NO3--N (0.001 < P ≤ 0.01). Notably, among AOB, only Nitrosospira sp. III7 exhibited significant negative correlations with DDE (0.001 < P ≤ 0.01), DDT (0.01 < P ≤ 0.05), and DDD (0.01 < P ≤ 0.05). These results indicate that DDT and its metabolites affect soil AOA and AOB, consequently affecting soil ammonia oxidation.

Mass spectrometry is a well-established analytical technique for studying the masses of atoms, molecules, or fragments of molecules. One of the key metrics of mass spectrometers is the limit of detection e.g., the minimum amount of signal from an analyte that can be reliably distinguished from noise. Detection limits have improved greatly over the last 30-40 years to the point that nanogram per litre and even picogram per litre detections are commonly reported. There is however, a difference between detection limits obtained with a single, pure compound in a pure solvent and those obtained from real life samples/matrixes. Determining a practical detection limit for mass spectrometry is difficult because it depends on multiple factors, such as the compound under test, the matrix, data processing methods and spectrometer type. Here we show the improvements in reported limits of detection on mass spectrometers over time using industry and literature data. The limit of detection for glycine and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane were taken from multiple published articles spanning a period of 45 years. The limits of detection were plotted against the article's year of publication to assess whether the trend in improvement in sensitivity resembles Moore's Law of computing (essentially doubling every two years). The results show that advancements in detection limits in mass spectrometry are close to, but not quite at a rate equivalent to Moore's Law and the improvements in detection limits reported from industry seem to be greater than those reported in the academic literature.

Commercially available headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME) fibers have been used for years to extract pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls from aqueous samples at the expected ultratrace levels (picograms per liter or parts per quadrillion) in alpine lakes. Several variables of the HS-SPME technique have been adequately evaluated, including water temperature, pH, salt content, fiber type and coating thickness, length of fiber-sample exposure, and liquid immersion versus headspace exposure; but surprisingly, analyte recovery as a function of analyte concentration and storage time has not been included in previous studies, which can be important for remote sampling sites. Seven hydrophobic chlorinated pollutants were identified in alpine lake water (out of 54 analyzed); but recovery using the common SPME technique was found to be inconsistent as the analyte concentration decreases, and the recovery trend as a function of concentration varies on a compound-to-compound basis that could result in a large underestimation of analyte concentrations in field samples. Of the 54 compounds surveyed, o,p'-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), p,p'-DDT, p,p'-dichlorodiphenyldichloroethylene (DDE), o,p'-DDE, chlorthal-dimethyl, endosulfan I, γ-hexachlorocyclohexane, heptachlor, and trans-nonachlor were generally measured at concentrations between 1 and 150 pg/L (parts per quadrillion). No study to date has evaluated this commonly used but unstandardized technique for analyte recovery as a function of analyte concentration or storage time of aqueous samples. Exposure to certain chemicals in the environment may contribute to the risk of developing cancer. Although cancer risk from environmental chemical exposure among general populations is considered low compared to that in occupational settings, many people may nevertheless be chronically exposed to relatively low levels of environmental chemicals which vary by such various factors as residential area, lifestyle, and dietary habits. It is therefore necessary to assess population-specific exposure levels and examine their association with cancer risk. Here, we reviewed epidemiological evidence on cancer risk and exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT), hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), cadmium, arsenic, and acrylamide. Japanese are widely exposed to these chemicals, mainly through the diet, and an association with increased cancer risk is suspected. Epidemiological evidence from Japanese studies to date does not support a positive association between blood concentrations of DDT, HCH, PCBs, and PFASs and risk of breast or prostate cancer. We established assessment methods for dietary intake of cadmium, arsenic, and acrylamide using a food frequency questionnaire. Overall, dietary intakes of cadmium, arsenic, and acrylamide were not significantly associated with increased risk of total cancer and major cancer sites in the Japan Public Health Center-based Prospective Study. However, statistically significant positive associations were observed between dietary cadmium intake and risk of estrogen receptor-positive breast cancer among postmenopausal women, and dietary arsenic intake and risk of lung cancer among male smokers. In addition, studies using biomarkers as exposure assessment revealed statistically significant positive associations between urinary cadmium concentration and risk of breast cancer, and between ratio of hemoglobin adducts of acrylamide and glycidamide and risk of breast cancer. Epidemiological studies of general populations in Japan are limited and further evidence is required. In particular, studies of the association of organochlorine and organofluorine compounds with risk of cancer sites other than breast and prostate cancer are warranted, as are large prospective studies of the association between biomarkers of exposure and risk of cancer.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are toxic chemical compounds that can bioaccumulate, adhere to lipid matrices, and affect human health. This study aimed to investigate the association between maternal pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and dietary intake during pregnancy and POP concentrations in the human milk of women from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. One hundred and forty-seven women were followed from the third trimester of pregnancy until 119 days postpartum, and 77 human milk samples were analyzed between 2 and 119 days postpartum. POP concentrations were analyzed using gas chromatography-triple quadrupole mass spectrometry. Pregnancy dietary intake was estimated using a semi-quantitative food frequency questionnaire, and pre-pregnancy body mass index at baseline was classified as normal or overweight/obesity. Multiple logistic and linear regression models were performed to investigate the association between pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity, dietary intake during pregnancy, and POP concentrations in human milk. The models were adjusted for maternal age, maternal schooling, total cholesterol serum concentrations, and time postpartum. The analyses were corrected for multiple comparisons using the Benjamini-Hochberg test. Significant associations were observed between pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and dichlorodiphenyldichloroethane (ppDDE), polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)74, PCB138, PCB153, PCB170, PCB180, total PCBs, total 4PCBs, total 2 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs), and total POP concentrations. Higher daily lipid intake during pregnancy increased human milk hexachlorobenzene (HCB). This study showed that pre-pregnancy overweight/obesity and total lipid intake during pregnancy were associated with POP concentrations in the milk of women from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. To promote adequate nutritional status since preconception and surveillance and control of POP in the environment could be essential to ensure binomial mother-infant health and biomonitoring studies and programs for these POPs should be stimulated.

Dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) is an organochlorine insecticide used worldwide. Several studies have reported the toxic effects of DDT and its metabolites on steroid hormone biosynthesis; however, its environmental effects are not well understood. This study examined wild rats collected in DDT-sprayed areas of South Africa and quantified plasma metabolites using liquid chromatography quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF-MS). Fold change analysis of the metabolome revealed the effect of DDT on bile acid biosynthesis. Gene expression of the related enzyme in rat liver samples was also quantified. Significant association was found between DDT and gene expression levels related to constitutive androstane receptor mediated enzymes, such as Cyp2b1 in rat livers. However, our results could not fully demonstrate that enzymes related to bile acid biosynthesis were strongly affected by DDT. The correlation between DDT concentration and gene expression involved in steroid hormone synthesis in testis was also evaluated; however, no significant correlation was found. The disturbance of metabolic enzymes occurred in rat liver in the target area. Our results suggest that DDT exposure affects gene expression in wild rats living in DDT-sprayed areas. Therefore, there is a need for DDT toxicity evaluation in mammals living in DDT-sprayed areas. We could not find an effective biomarker that could reflect the mechanism of DDT exposure; however, this approach can provide new insights for future research to evaluate DDT effects in sprayed areas.

Understanding the contribution of asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers in malaria transmission might be helpful to design and implement new control measures. The present study explored the prevalence of asymptomatic and symptomatic Plasmodium infections (asexual and sexual stages) and the contribution of asymptomatic P. falciparum carriers to Anopheles-mediated malaria transmission in Ouidah (Benin). Thick and thin blood smears were examined from finger-prick blood specimens using light microscopy, and the density of both asexual and sexual stages of Plasmodium species was calculated. Infectivity of gametocyte-infected blood samples to Anopheles gambiae was assessed through direct membrane feeding assays. The prevalence of asymptomatic Plasmodium infections was 28.73% (289/1006). All the asymptomatic gametocyte-carriers (19/19), with gametocytaemia ranging from 10 - 1200 gametocytes/µL of blood, were infectious to An. gambiae mosquitoes. The mean oocyst prevalences varied significantly (χ 2  = 16.42, df = 7, p = 0.02) among laboratory mosquito strains (6.9 - 39.4%) and near-field mosquitoes (4.9 - 27.2%). Likewise, significant variation (χ 2  = 56.85, df = 7, p = 6.39 × 10-10) was observed in oocyst intensity. Our findings indicate that asymptomatic Plasmodium carriers could significantly contribute to malaria transmission. Overall, this study highlights the importance of diagnosing and treating asymptomatic and symptomatic infection carriers during malaria control programmes.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) were analyzed in 136 blubber samples of Franciscana dolphins from Brazil (Pontoporia blainvillei), which is the most threatened dolphin in the Southwestern Atlantic. The dolphins were caught by the fishery fleet and collected from 2000 to 2018 in three regions of São Paulo state: northern São Paulo (SPN), central São Paulo (SPC), and southern São Paulo (SPS). The POPs analyzed in this study were polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDTs), Mirex, hexachlorobenzene (HCB), chlordane compounds (CHLs), hexachlorocyclohexane isomers (HCHs), and polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs). The concentrations ranged from 36 to 7200 ng g-1 lipid weight (lw) and 113-42200 ng g-1 lw for predominant compounds DDTs and PCBs, respectively. Similar profiles of PCB congeners were observed with a predominance of hexachlorinated compounds, representing approximately 50% of the total PCB amount; the highest PCB concentrations were observed from Baixada Santista (SPC) proximate to a highly urbanized and industrial coastal area. Significant differences were observed between the sexes and maturity of dolphins, mainly for PCBs, DDTs, and Mirex. In general, POPs other than HCB in Franciscana dolphins showed downward temporal trends, matching the regulatory periods for restricting and/or banning these compounds. Although POP concentrations are declining, PCB levels remain high in small dolphins, suggesting adverse health effects on Franciscanas. As organic contaminants are one of the numerous threats Franciscanas have been vulnerable to along the Brazilian coast, we recommend monitoring POPs levels every five years to check for declining (or stabilizing) trends.

Atmospheric micro-/nanominerals play an important role in the adsorption, enrichment, and migration of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). In the present study, the correlations between OCPs and minerals in outdoor atmospheric dustfall were investigated, and the correlations were used to speculate the source of p,p'-(dicofol+dichlorobenzophenone [DBP]), which is the sum of p,p'-dicofol and p,p'-DBP. Atmospheric dustfall samples were collected from 53 sites in the Chengdu-Deyang-Mianyang economic region in the Sichuan basin. In this region, 24 OCPs were analyzed by gas chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. The average concentration of 24 OCPs was 51.2 ± 27.4 ng/g. The results showed that the concentration of Σ24 OCPs in urban areas was higher than that in suburban areas (p < 0.05). Minerals in atmospheric dustfall were semiquantitatively analyzed by X-ray diffraction. The primary minerals were quartz, calcite, and gypsum. A Spearman correlation analysis of OCPs and minerals showed that low-volatility OCPs could be adsorbed by minerals in atmospheric dustfall. A density functional theory simulation verified that p,p'-(dicofol+DBP) in atmospheric dustfall was primarily derived from the p,p'-dicofol adsorbed by gypsum. Isomeric ratio results suggested that the samples had weathered lindane and chlordane profiles and confirmed that residents in the Sichuan basin used technical dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane. Finally, the OCPs were evaluated to determine the potential risk of cancer in adults and children from OCP exposure. Exposure to OCPs via atmospheric dustfall was safe for adults. The cancer risk for children exposed to OCPs was slightly lower than the threshold value (10-6 ) under a high dust ingestion rate, which poses a concern. Constructed wetlands (CWs) can effectively treat landfill leachate (LL). However, there is limited research on the removal of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) refractory organics during LL treatment in CWs. In this study, multi-stage subsurface flow CWs was used to treat LL, and the removal fate of hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) in CWs was investigated. The structural differences between plant roots and substrate microbial communities were compared and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) metabolic pathway of organic matter was analyzed based on metagenomic analysis. The results showed that substrate adsorption (50.55%-72.74%) and microbial degradation (20.38%-27.89%) were the main ways to remove OCPs. The Proteobacteria occupied a dominant position in the CWs system, among which Betaproteobacteria (34.37%-35.90%) were contained in the substrate, and Alphaproteobacteria (21.19%-23.84%) was a more dominant microorganism in plant roots. Formaldehyde assimilation and serine pathway were the main pathways of methane metabolism. This study provides a reference for the removal mechanism of OCPs to promote the application of CWs technology in LL treatment.

Under insulin-stimulated conditions, skeletal muscle is the largest glucose consumer in the body. Mitochondrial dysfunction and damage to this tissue from oxidative stress are linked to the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes. Environmental exposure to dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolite, 1,1-dichloro-2,2-bis(p-chlorophenyl)ethylene (DDE), has been associated with the incidence of type 2 diabetes as well as altered oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction in non-muscle tissues. We hypothesized that energy metabolism and insulin sensitivity in skeletal muscle will be altered with exposure to DDT and DDE. In this pilot study, mitochondrial function was measured in permeabilized muscle fibers from Sprague-Dawley rats after one week of exposure to a single injection of DDT (40 µg/kg), a dose comparable to DDT levels in the diets of the Inuit of Northern Canada. The levels of oxidative phosphorylation chain complexes and ROS detoxification enzymes were measured in muscle tissue from these specimens. This acute in vivo exposure to DDT decreased muscle mitochondrial function by 45% without affecting the levels of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation chain complexes nor levels of ROS detoxification enzymes. To isolate the effects of DDT and DDE exposure on muscle, L6 myotubes were exposed to DDT or DDE (0, 10, 100, 1000, 10 000 nM) for 24 h. Only very high concentrations of DDT and DDE (1 000 - 10 000 nM) altered maximal respiration with only DDT altering basal glucose uptake in L6 myotubes. This did not alter levels of ROS detoxification enzymes or malondialdehyde (MDA) in L6 myotubes. Altogether, acute exposure to environmentally relevant doses of DDT resulted in muscle mitochondrial dysfunction in vivo in rats, but not when muscle cells were directly exposed to the pollutant or its metabolite.

In this study, we evaluated the residual levels and distribution characteristics of 10 organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in the soil of agricultural lands (paddy field, vegetable field, and orchard, n = 150) nationwide. As a result of the investigation, 3-10 types of OCPs were detected in combination in 144 locations (96%) of the total 150 locations. Among those OCPs, dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and endosulfan were detected in high amounts. The geometric mean concentrations of DDT and endosulfan were ∑DDT 0.31 ng g-1 (ND-2187.18 ng g-1) and ∑endosulfan 0.33 ng g-1 (ND-312.68 ng g-1), respectively. OCP concentrations were generally higher in orchards than in other agricultural fields due to a large amount of pesticides used. DDT in two orchards was detected at 2187.18 ng g-1 and 1061.78 ng g-1, exceeding the levels stated in the Canadian DDT Soil Quality Guidance (SQG, 700 ng g-1). The result of applying the isomer ratio to evaluate the recent or past use of DDT, endosulfan, and hexachlorocyclohexane (HCH), which had a high detection rate, showed that it could be attributable to historical usage. DDT and HCH showed statistically similar residual distribution patterns; however, endosulfan did not show a clear correlation with DDT and HCH due to the effect of its recent use. Thus, the results of evaluation of OCP residual levels and distribution characteristics can be used for the soil management policy of OCPs in agricultural lands in Korea.
