OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of remineralization agents such as fluoride varnish and P11-4, alone and in combination with Er: YAG laser, on in-vitro hard tissue repair in artificial enamel lesions. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of sixty enamel surfaces of 4 × 5 mm in size were created on both the buccal and lingual sides of thirty extracted wisdom teeth. Remineralization agents were applied to the specimens that were grouped as follows: Group 1, control; Group 2, fluoride varnish (FV); Group 3, P11-4; Group 4, laser; Group 5, laser + FV; and Group 6, laser + P11-4. The fluorescence level was determined with DiagnoDent. The enamel mineral density, area and volume, and caries lesion area and volume were determined with micro-computed tomography (µCT), surface features were evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and elemental analysis was performed using energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy (EDS) . RESULTS: For specimens treated only with self-assembling peptide P11-4, the caries lesion area (mm2) values were 38.19 and 21.62, and the caries lesion volume (mm3) values were 6.27 and 2.99, respectively for pre- and post-treatment. In combination usage of self-assembling peptide P11-4 and laser, the caries lesion area (mm2) values were 38.39 and 16.91, and the caries lesion volume (mm3) values were 11.15 and 3.64, respectively for pre- and post-treatment. In the application of the P11-4 alone and in combination with laser, there was a statistically significant decrease in DiagnoDent values, an increase in enamel volume(mm3),enamel area(mm2) and mineral density(g/cm3) values and a decrease in caries lesion volume(mm3) and area(mm2) obtained by µCT, and an increase in %Ca and %F values obtained by SEM/EDS analysis (p < 0.05). It was discovered that the samples treated with P11-4 had a considerably higher rise in the Ca/P ratio than the samples treated with FV (p < 0.05). The calcium content increased significantly more when P11-4 application was combined with laser irradiation (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The combined use of self-assembling peptide P11-4 and laser accelerated the remineralization process and increased the remineralization capacity. CLINICAL RELEVANCE: FV and P11-4, alone or in combination with laser, can be successfully used as remineralization agents in initial enamel caries.

This case report focuses on the clinical development of a 32-year-old female patient's lobular capillary hemangioma and provides valuable insights into the atypical nature of this tumor. Low-level laser therapy (LLLT) that follows diode laser intervention can be regarded as a novel and evidence-based approach to therapeutic management. The application of a diode laser causes the vascular elements that comprise the bulk of the lesion to coagulate, which in turn causes the lesion's size to decrease. The biological processes that lead to quick tissue regeneration are also activated by LLLT. The suggested therapeutic approach ensures that the patient will heal in the best possible way while also optimizing their comfort and safety. It extends beyond the mere removal of wounds. The case report demonstrates how well dual laser therapy works to lessen common postoperative issues that are commonly seen in traditional surgical therapies for lobular capillary hemangioma such as excessive bleeding and infection. The precise application of the diode laser minimizes damage to surrounding tissues, thereby enhancing the healing process. Additionally, following surgery, LLLT helps reduce pain and inflammation, which improves patient outcomes. The potential of diode laser and LLLT therapies for treating vascular lesions, including lobular capillary hemangioma, is evidenced by their therapeutic advantages. This encourages wider clinical applications and field research. The presented case report offers valuable clinical significance by highlighting an innovative therapeutic approach for lobular capillary hemangioma, a vascular lesion that can present challenges in management.

The paper presents an overview of modern scientific data on the study of the effect of laser radiation on biological tissues of the mouth in the therapeutic treatment of dental diseases. The use of lasers in the treatment of dental caries and its complications, non-carious lesions of hard dental tissues, as well as the use of lasers in the treatment of periodontal diseases and aesthetic restoration of teeth is considered.

Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is a multifaceted disorder impacting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), causing substantial discomfort and functional limitations. This systematic review aims to comprehensively assess the effectiveness of non-invasive treatment modalities for TMJ dysfunction, prioritizing a definitive protocol to ensure patient safety and enhance quality of life. Employing the PRISMA guidelines, we meticulously analyzed 20 studies from a pool of 1,417 articles sourced from databases such as PubMed, Google Scholar, ScienceDirect, and Medline. These studies underscore the multifarious nature of TMD and the varied responses to treatments such as physical therapy, laser therapy, ultrasound and electrical stimulation, splint therapy, injections, and arthrocentesis. Notably, the review highlights the paramount importance of precise diagnosis, often through surface electromyography, followed by a tailored treatment approach integrating manual therapy, counseling, and splint therapy. The systematic analysis revealed that while certain treatments such as transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation and low-level laser therapy showed limited efficacy, combination therapies, especially those involving manual therapy, counseling, and splint therapy, demonstrated substantial improvement in reducing pain, depression, and anxiety. The findings advocate for a non-invasive, patient-centric approach, emphasizing education and symptom management before considering more invasive procedures such as injections and arthrocentesis. The review identifies the need for more comprehensive, longitudinal studies to establish a standardized, evidence-based treatment protocol for TMJ dysfunction, aiming to improve patient outcomes holistically.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to compare the antibacterial effectiveness of passive ultrasonic irrigation (PUI), Er,Cr:YSGG laser (WTL), and photon-induced photoacoustic streaming (PIPS) using an Er:YAG laser against Enterococcus faecalis biofilms in the apical third of root canals. METHODS: Root canals of 70 single-rooted human teeth were instrumented and infected with E. faecalis for 3 weeks to form biofilms. The samples were randomly divided into five groups as follows: (i) PUI + 3% NaOCl (n = 16); (ii) Er,Cr:YSGG laser (n = 16); (iii) PIPS + 3% NaOCl (n = 16); (iv) positive control group (n = 10); and (v) negative control group (n = 10). The bacterial content in the root canal was sampled using (a) the paper-point sampling method before (S1) and after (S2) treatment and (b) pulverising the apical 5 mm of the root. The number of bacteria recovered from each group was counted as colony-forming units (CFUs). The amount of reduction between the groups was compared with the Kruskal-Wallis test and post-test Dunn's multiple comparisons tests. The significance level was set at 5% (p < 0.05). RESULTS: The samples from the paper-point sampling method showed that the amount of bacteria before (S1) and after treatment (S2) was significantly different between PIPS and WTL, as well as between the PUI and WTL groups. In contrast, no significant difference was found between the PIPS and PUI groups. From the pulverised samples, the results indicated no significant difference among all experimental groups in the amount of bacterial reduction in the apical 5 mm of the root. CONCLUSIONS: PUI and PIPS showed a significantly greater reduction in bacterial content within the main root canal compared with the WTL. There was no difference among all experimental groups in the apical third of the root.

OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the ability of a laser, and a 'quad-wave' LCU, to photo-cure paste and flowable bulk-fill resin-based composites (RBCs). METHODS: Five LCUs and nine exposure conditions were used. The laser LCU (Monet) used for 1 s and 3 s, the quad-wave LCU (PinkWave) used for 3 s in the Boost and 20 s in the Standard modes, the the multi-peak LCU (Valo X) used for 5 s in the Xtra and 20 s in the Standard modes, were compared to the polywave PowerCure used in the 3 s mode and for 20 s in the Standard mode, and to the mono-peak SmartLite Pro used for 20 s. Two paste consistency bulk-fill RBCs: Filtek One Bulk Fill Shade A2 (3 M), Tetric PowerFill Shade IVA (Ivoclar Vivadent), and two flowable RBCs: Filtek Bulk Fill Flowable Shade A2 (3 M), Tetric PowerFlow Shade IVA (Ivoclar Vivadent) were photo-cured in 4-mm deep x 4-mm diameter metal molds. The light received by these specimens was measured using a spectrometer (Flame-T, Ocean Insight), and the radiant exposure delivered to the top surface of the RBCs was mapped. The immediate degree of conversion (DC) at the bottom, and the 24-hour Vickers Hardness (VH) at the top and bottom of the RBCs were measured and compared. RESULTS: The irradiance received by the 4-mm diameter specimens ranged from 1035 mW/cm2 (SmartLite Pro) to 5303 mW/cm2 (Monet). The radiant exposures between 350 and 500 nm delivered to the top surface of the RBCs ranged from 5.3 J/cm2 (Monet in 1 s) to 26.4 J/cm2 (Valo X), although the PinkWave delivered 32.1 J/cm2 in 20 s 350 to 900 nm. All four RBCs achieved their maximum DC and VH values at the bottom when photo-cured for 20 s. The Monet used for 1 s and the PinkWave used for 3 s on the Boost setting delivered the lowest radiant exposures between 420 and 500 nm (5.3 J/cm2 and 3.5 J/cm2 respectively), and they produced the lowest DC and VH values. CONCLUSIONS: Despite delivering a high irradiance, the short 1 or 3-s exposures delivered less energy to the RBC than 20-s exposures from LCUs that deliver> 1000 mW/cm2. There was an excellent linear correlation (r > 0.98) between the DC and the VH at the bottom. There was a logarithmic relationship between the DC and the radiant exposure (Pearson's r = 0.87-97) and between the VH and the radiant exposure (Pearson's r = 0.92-0.96) delivered in the 420-500 nm range.

The demand for aesthetic procedures is significantly increasing worldwide. In this case report, an in-office laser-assisted protocol coupled with rejuvenating concentrate serum (Gluage, TEBISKIN Gluage, SkinMed, Italy) was made. A 24-year-old female patient presented with a chief complaint of abundant facial acne and localized pigmentation. Clinical examination revealed the presence of abundant acne on the forehead and cheeks and the presence of localized pigmentation. Laser-assisted protocol coupled with rejuvenating concentrate serum was suggested. The protocol consisted of a thorough cleansing of the face followed by irradiation with a 980 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland), followed by a 405 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland), the application of rejuvenating concentrate serum (Gluage, TEBISKIN Gluage, SkinMed, Italy), and irradiation with the 635 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland). The protocol was made once per week for three weeks (three sessions in total), and a three-month follow-up was made after the end of the last session to confirm the effectiveness of the treatment. Stomatology 1 diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland) was used in this case report as a 980 nm, 405 nm, and 635 nm diode laser (Smart M, Lasotronix, Poland). During the follow-up period, an almost total reduction of the acne was observed with the total disappearance of the localized pigmentation. This case report confirms the effectiveness of the proposed laser-assisted facial aesthetic treatment. We invite further studies to be made within the same suggested promising protocol.

The mucocele is the most common minor salivary gland associated disease of the oral cavity. It is also considered one of the most common biopsied oral lesions in pediatric patients. In recent years, extensive evidence has been published about the usage of lasers in treating mucoceles in pediatric patients. The aim of the present study was to assess the effectiveness of laser irradiation in the treatment of pediatric mucocele. An electronic search of databases (PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science and Google Scholar) was carried out in order to identify all relevant articles using a combination of the following keywords: "Pediatric", "Oral", "Mucocele", "Dental", "Oral Medicine", "Soft Dental Lasers", "Hard Dental Lasers", and "Lasers," for all case reports, case series, case-control and cohort studies published from 2007 to 2021. After limiting the search results, removing duplicate titles, and eligibility evaluation, 17 papers were enrolled in the study. Out of the total studies included, 10 articles were related to the diode (635 nm, 808 nm, 810 nm, and 980 nm), 5 to CO2 (10,600 nm), 3 to Er, Cr: YSGG (2780 nm), and 1 involving KTP lasers (532 nm). All studies indicated successful clinical results on mucocele excision with better intra- and post-operative indicators. The general characteristics and outcomes were summarized, and the quality of the studies was assessed using CARE guidelines in this systematic review. The reduction or absence of pain and bleeding, hemostasis, reduced operating time, minimal analgesic consumption, and an antibacterial effect were among the advantages of laser irradiation in the included studies. The laser has proven itself to play an effective role in the treatment of oral mucocele in paediatric patients.

The use of zirconia for implants and abutments has become more prevalent in implant dentistry as an alternative to the commonly used titanium implants, and peri-implant disease can still affect them. The erbium, chromium-doped:yttrium-scandium-gallium-garnet (Er, Cr:YSGG) laser has emerged as a promising treatment modality. The purposes of this in vitro study were to (1) determine the effects of the laser on the surface roughness of zirconia discs; (2) determine the extent of removal of a single species biofilm, E. coli, on the zirconia discs after applying the laser; (3) determine the amount of cell adhesion and proliferation utilizing fibroblasts on zirconia discs after treatment with the laser. All treatments will be compared with the commonly used ultrasonic instrumentation and hand scalers. For the first aim, gross examination revealed noticeable surface damage on the discs when using ultrasonic and scalers but not for the laser group. For surface roughness, the mean roughness was Pa= 0.623±0.185 µm, 0.762±0.421 µm, 0.740±0.214 µm, and 0.724±0.168 µm for control discs, and discs treated with either the Er,Cr:YSGG laser, ultrasonic instrumentation, and hand scalers respectively. There was no statistical significance among the groups (p=0.628). For bacteria decontamination, there was a statistical significance among the groups (p< 0.0001). Statistical significance was seen between the control group and each of the three treatment groups, favoring the treatment groups (p< 0.0001). Statistical significance was seen when comparing ultrasonic instrumentation and hand scalers (p= 0.000) as well as when comparing the Er,Cr:YSGG laser to hand scalers (p= 0.007), favoring both the ultrasonic instrumentation and Er,Cr:YSGG laser. No significance between the Er,Cr:YSGG laser group and the ultrasonic instrumentation group was noted (p =0.374). When comparing the cell attachment following treatment in each of the three groups and also without treatment (control), there was a statistical significance among the groups (p<0.0001) in terms of total cell count, favoring the control and the laser groups. Further evaluations with SEM showed differences in cell morphology indicating more adherent cells on Er,Cr:YSGG laser-treated surfaces. In conclusion, gross examination of the discs show clear surface changes when using ultrasonic instrumentation and hand scalers compared to the Er,Cr:YSGG laser group. The Er,Cr:YSGG laser was able to effectively ablate bacteria from zirconia disc. Fibroblast attachment on the surfaces of the zirconia discs shows more adherence when treated with Er,Cr:YSGG laser.

The intent of this study was to provide a retrospective analysis of the clinical outcomes of 222 consecutive patients with 437 implants diagnosed with peri-implantitis and treated with the LAPIP protocol. All patients treated with LAPIP therapy at this practice were included. The primary outcome variable studied was probing depth (PD), and secondary variables were erythema, bleeding on probing, and suppuration. The significance of reductions in PD and clinical signs was assessed using repeated-measures analysis of variance. Complete data for both baseline and follow-up visits were available for 116 patients with a total of 224 treated implants. The rate of successful treatments-defined as follow-up PD ≤ 4.0 mm and elimination of clinical signs-was 90%. The reduction in PD from 5.4 mm at baseline to 3.4 mm at a median of 7.6 months was statistically significant (P ≤ 0.001). The reduction in the frequency of clinical signs was also statistically significant (P ≤ 0.001). Among 138 patients who had follow-up visits but not necessarily complete PD data, 15 implants were recorded as failed and 249 were recorded as intact at the median longest follow-up time of 13.1 months, resulting in a survival rate of 94%. In this single clinical practice, use of the minimally invasive LAPIP protocol for the treatment of peri-implantitis provided effective and predictable clinical outcomes. Future randomized controlled trials are indicated.

Recent reviews and meta-analyses of the literature over the past quarter-century have failed to provide enough evidence to prove or disprove the actual utility of photonic therapy in periodontitis, alone or adjunctive to conventional approaches. This apparent paradox has been explained by the many physical, molecular, biological, anatomical, and technical variables of photonic treatments, which can differ in light-emitting devices (laser or LED), wavelengths, irradiation power and modes, clinical objectives, follow-up times, disease grading, and assessment methods. This multi-faceted, controversial scenario has led practitioners to underestimate the actual potential of photonic therapy in periodontal diseases. In this critical appraisal of the literature, we have briefly summarized the main photonic therapies and instruments used in Periodontology, highlighting their main characteristics and limitations. Then, we have tried to identify and discuss the key methodological issues which can have an impact on the outcome of photonic therapies. Our main goal was to identify the best parameters, settings, and methodologies to perform effective periodontal photonic treatments and to extrapolate some recommendations for clinical use. Should these recommendations find a consensus among periodontologists and be adopted in future clinical studies, they will hopefully contribute to dissipate the present confusion and uncertainty on this complex matter.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Selective killing of pathogens by laser is possible due to the difference in absorption of photon energy by pathogens and host tissues. The optical properties of pathogenic microorganisms are used along with the known optical properties of soft tissues in calculations of the laser-induced thermal response of pathogen colonies embedded in a tissue model. The objective is to define the laser parameters that optimize pathogen destruction and depth of the bactericidal effect. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The virtual periodontium is a computational model of the optical and time-dependent thermal properties of infected periodontal tissues. The model simulates the periodontal procedure: Laser Sulcular Debridement.1 Virtual pathogen colonies are placed at different depths in the virtual periodontium to determine the depth for effective bactericidal effects given various laser parameters (wavelength, peak power, pulse duration, scan rate, fluence rate) and differences in pathogen sensitivities. RESULTS: Accumulated background heat from multiple passes increases the depth of the bactericidal effect. In visible and near-IR wavelengths the large difference in absorption between normal soft tissue and Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Prevotella intermedia (Pi) results in selective destruction. Diode laser (810 nm) efficacy and depth of the bactericidal effect are variable and dependent on hemin availability. Both pulsed-Nd:YAG and the 810 nm diode lasers achieve a 2-3 mm deep damage zone for pigmented Pg and Pi in soft tissue without surface damage (selective photoantisepsis). The model predicts no selectivity for the Er:YAG laser (2,940 nm). Depth of the bactericidal effect is highly dependent on pathogen absorption coefficient. Highly sensitive pathogens may be destroyed as deep as 5-6 mm in soft tissue. Short pulse durations enable confinement of the thermal event to the target. Temporal selectivity is achieved by adjusting pulse duration based on target size. CONCLUSION: The scatter-limited phototherapy model of the infected periodontium is applied to develop a proper dosimetry for selective photoantisepsis. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: It is commonly believed that pigmented pathogens are selectively targeted by dental lasers. To test this notion optical diffuse reflection spectroscopy (DRS) was used to obtain absorption spectra for the periodontal pathogens, Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg) and Prevotella intermedia (Pi). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Spectra from 400 to 1,100 nm wavelengths of Pg colonies cultured with different concentrations of hemin were obtained to test the hypothesis that "visual pigmentation" predicts absorption of near-infrared (IR) dental laser energy. Ablation threshold at 1,064 nm [1] was measured for the pathogenic fungus, Candida albicans (Ca). RESULTS: The hypothesis was demonstrated to be true at 810 nm, it was false at 1,064 nm. Diode laser (810 nm) efficacy and "depth of kill" is dependent on hemin availability from 400 to about 900 nm. Pg and Pi absorption at 1,064 nm (µa = 7.7 ± 2.6 cm(-1) ) is independent of hemin availability but is determined by another unknown chromophore. Ca is non-pigmented but very sensitive to 1,064 nm irradiation. CONCLUSIONS: The amount of visual pigmentation does not necessarily predict sensitivity to dental laser irradiation. Spectra in visible and near-IR wavelengths demonstrate a large difference in absorption between soft tissue and Pg or Pi. RESUMEN

In this paper, we propose the fast and accurate registration method of partially scanned dental surfaces in a 3D dental laser scanning. To overcome the multiple point correspondence problems of conventional surface registration methods, we propose the novel depth map-based registration method to register 3D surface models. First, we convert a partially scanned 3D dental surface into a 2D image by generating the 2D depth map image of the surface model by applying a 3D rigid transformation into this model. Then, the image-based registration method using 2D depth map images accurately estimates the initial transformation between two consequently acquired surface models. To further increase the computational efficiency, we decompose the 3D rigid transformation into out-of-plane (i.e. x-, y-rotation, and z-translation) and in-plane (i.e. x-, y-translation, and z-rotation) transformations. For the in-plane transformation, we accelerate the transformation process by transforming the 2D depth map image instead of transforming the 3D surface model. For the more accurate registration of 3D surface models, we enhance iterative closest point (ICP) method for the subsequent fine registration. Our initial depth map-based registration well aligns each surface model. Therefore, our subsequent ICP method can accurately register two surface models since it is highly probable that the closest point pairs are the exact corresponding point pairs. The experimental results demonstrated that our method accurately registered partially scanned dental surfaces. Regarding the computational performance, our method delivered about 1.5 times faster registration than the conventional method. Our method can be successfully applied to the accurate reconstruction of 3D dental objects for orthodontic and prosthodontic treatment.

Objective: to evaluate the effect of 660nm and 780 nm laser therapy, with dose of 6.3 J/cm² and 25 mW power, either associated with nutritional stress or not, on laryngeal epidermoid carcinoma cell proliferation (H.Ep. 2). Material and Methods: the H.Ep.2 cells were placed in a culture flask and frozen in fetal bovine serum (FBS) at -80°C, with different concentrations of the medium: 5% and 10%. Laser therapy was started 24 h after cell subculturing and performed at time intervals of 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours after the first irradiation, in a period of five days. After this, cell viability was verified using the MTT method. Means and standard deviation were obtained, and the Student's-t and F (ANOVA) statistical tests were used, with Tukey or Tamanhe comparisons. Results: The group subjected to 780 nm laser showed significant differences (p 0.05). The time influenced the growth of all cultures. Conclusion: low level laser interfered in cell proliferation and this effect could be determined by the wavelength used and the nutritional status of the cells.

PURPOSE: The purpose of present study is to compare mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics of fractured surface for cast, 3-D printing laser sintered and CAD/CAM milled cobalt-chromium (Co-Cr) alloy specimens and to investigate whether laser sintered technique is adequate for dental applications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty six flat disc shape Co-Cr alloy specimens were fabricated for surface hardness test and divided into three groups according to the manufacturing methods; 12 specimens for casting (n=12), 12 specimens for laser sintered technology (n=12) and 12 specimens for milled technology (n=12). Twelve dumbbell shape specimens for each group were also fabricated for a tensile test. Statistical comparisons of the mechanical properties for the alloys were performed by Kruskal-Wallis test followed by Mann-Whitney and Bonferroni test. The microstructural characteristics of fractured surfaces were examined using SEM. RESULTS: There were significant differences in the mean Vickers hardness values between all groups and the cast specimen showed the highest (455.88 Hv) while the CAD/CAM milled specimen showed the lowest (243.40 Hv). Significant differences were found among the three groups for ultimate tensile strength, 0.2% yield stress, elongation, and elastic modulus. The highest ultimate tensile strength value (1442.94 MPa) was shown in the milled group and the highest 0.2% yield strength (1136.15 MPa) was shown in the laser sintered group. CONCLUSION: Different manufacturing methods influence the mechanical properties and microstructure of the fractured surfaces in Co-Cr alloys. The cast Co-Cr alloy specimens showed the highest Vickers hardness, and the CAD/CAM milled specimens revealed the highest tensile strength value. All alloys represent adequate mechanical properties satisfying the ISO standards of dental alloy.

Cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema is a rare complication of dental procedures. Although most cases of emphysema occur incidentally with the use of a high-speed air turbine handpiece, there have been some reports over the past decade of cases caused by dental laser treatment. Emphysema as a complication caused by the air cooling spray of a dental laser is not well known, even though dental lasers utilize compressed air just as air turbines and syringes do. In this study, we comprehensively reviewed cases of emphysema attributed to dental laser treatment that appeared in the literature between January 2001 and September 2012, and we included three such cases referred to us. Among 13 cases identified in total, nine had cervicofacial subcutaneous and mediastinal emphysema. Compared with past reviews, the incidence of mediastinal emphysema caused by dental laser treatment was higher than emphysema caused by dental procedure without dental laser use. Eight patients underwent CO2 laser treatment and two underwent Er:YAG laser treatment. Nine patients had emphysema following laser irradiation for soft tissue incision. Dentists and oral surgeons should be cognizant of the potential risk for iatrogenic emphysema caused by the air cooling spray during dental laser treatment and ensure proper usage of lasers.

Introducción: el objetivo de este estudio es identificar los efectos clínicos y microscópicos del uso del láser en el aclaramiento dental sobre dientes humanos vitales. Métodos: en este estudio experimental, la muestra correspondió a 11 pacientes entre 21 y 35 años, de los cuales se recolectaron 22 dientes premolares sanos, sin restauraciones, fracturas o defectos coronales, con exodoncia indicada pormotivos ortodóncicos. Se compararon los efectos de la aplicación del aclaramiento con GC TiON® (GC dental, Washington, USA), con LED/Láser Ultrablue IV y sin él (DMC Equipamentos São Paulo, Brasil). Los dientes se dividieron en tres grupos: grupo control (n = 2), grupo 1 (n = 10) se aplicó el GC TiON® y láser y grupo 2 (n = 10) se aplicó el GC TiON ® sin láser. Posterior al aclaramiento, los dientes seextrajeron y se conservaron en agua destilada. Se hizo toma de color antes y después de cada sesión de aclaramiento. Las alteraciones en la superficie vestibular de las muestras fueron analizadas con microscopia electrónica de barrido. Resultados: el 85% (17 casos) no mostraron ninguna alteración en el esmalte, el 10% (2 casos) presentó alteraciones leves y solo el 5% (1 caso) tuvo alteración moderada en esmalte. No existió gran diferencia en el cambio de color entre los grupos; de las 20 muestras, 6 llegaron al tono B1 en la primera sesión, 7 en la segunda sesión y 7 en la tercera sesión. Conclusiones: con la microscopia electrónica no se evidenciaron daños severos en la estructura dental. No se presentó diferencia significativa en el grado de aclaramiento dental.


Introduction: the objective of this study was to identify the clinical and morphological laser effects on human vital teeth during dental bleaching procedures. Methods: this experimental study included 11 patients ages 21 to 35, from whom 22 healthy premolarteeth, with no restorations, fractures or crown defects were collected. These premolar teeth were extracted because of orthodontic reasons. The effects of performing dental bleaching with GC TiON® (GC dental, Washington, USA), and with and without LED/Laser Ultrablue IV (DMC Equipments Sao Paulo, Brasil) were compared. The teeth were divided into three groups: control group (n = 2), group 1 (n = 10),using GC TiON® with laser, and group 2 (n = 10), using GC TiON® without laser. After extraction, the teeth were conserved in distilled water. Color monitoring was performed before and after each whitening session. Alterations on the buccal surface of the samples were analyzed by means of Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM). Results: 85% of the teeth (17) did not show enamel alterations, 10% (2 teeth)presented mild alterations, and only 5% (1 tooth) suffered moderate enamel alterations. No significant color change difference occurred among the groups; out of the 20 samples, 6 of them reached tone B1 in the first session, 7 in the second session, and 7 more in the third one. Conclusions: Scanning Electron Microscopy did not reveal severe damage in dental structure. No significant difference in teeth whiteninglevel occurred.
