RESUMEN

Police negotiators provide leadership and expertise in the de-escalation and resolution of critical incidents, including responding to individuals exhibiting suicidal behaviour. This study describes the frequency and characteristics of suicide-related negotiation incidents in Queensland, Australia as classified in the Queensland Police Service Negotiator Deployment Database, between 2012 and 2014. Incidents were analysed to understand the individuals involved and precipitating factors including mental health problems and intoxication with alcohol or drugs. Police negotiators were deployed to 156 suicide intervention incidents over a 3-year period, half of which occurred at a residence. The cohort had a median age of 32 years and were predominantly male (82%). Four out of five individuals appeared to have a mental health problem, and at least half were intoxicated due to drugs or alcohol. Findings highlight the importance of strong linkages between police, health and social services and the need for innovative and comprehensive, cross-agency programmes.

RESUMEN

From February to May 2022, the war in Ukraine prompted Poland to accommodate 3.37 million refugees from conflict zones, in addition to 850 thousand Ukrainian economic migrants already residing in the country. A substantial proportion of these refugees, primarily mothers with children, swiftly integrated into the Polish educational system, with some children commencing schooling within a week of their arrival. This influx significantly diversified the then predominantly monolingual landscape of Polish schools. Given the uniqueness of this situation and the fact that Poland has historically remained mono-national and monolingual for decades, Polish teachers suffered from a lack of preparedness, resources and expertise to effectively navigate their teaching practices in multilingual classes. To understand the specificity of this situation, taking especially into account the perspective of educators, we have designed a qualitative study drawing on focus group and individual interview reports. We were particularly interested in determining how teachers' agency was activated in times of crisis. The findings reveal how the newly-emerging linguistic and cultural heterogeneity is perceived by teachers, how it is manifested in school and home environments, and the extent to which possibilities for synergies exist between the two. The findings also highlight the fact that, despite teachers' inexperience and unpreparedness for the new educational context, they instantly responded to the challenges that emerged. This can be exemplified by teachers' collaboration in material design as well as the willingness to participate in courses sensitizing to migrant students' needs (e.g., linguistic, educational, or emotional ones).

RESUMEN

Objectives. The emergence of COVID-19 has drastically changed the safety outlook of how the work world is viewed by leaders and followers. In this backdrop, the current study aimed at extending the safety leadership literature in the context of organizations operating in crisis situations by investigating the impact of safety-specific transformational leadership on the followers' extra-role behaviors through the mediation of psychological contract fulfillment. Methods. Using a time-lagged and multisource design, data were collected from 384 frontline rescue and healthcare workers dealing with COVID-19-related situations. Results. Results revealed that safety-specific transformational leadership behavior positively affects extra-role behaviors of frontline employees by enhancing their innovative work behavior, knowledge sharing behavior and organizational citizenship behavior. Also, psychological contract fulfillment plays a bridging role in translating the impact of safety-specific transformational leadership behavior on extra-role behaviors. Conclusion. The followers working in an unsafe context view the safety concern of their leader as a fulfillment of their unwritten expectations from their employers. Implications of these findings along with limitations and future research directions are also delineated.

RESUMEN

The following article was cleared for publication following peer review and upon the Editor-in-Chief's decision. The manuscript is an addition to the global health literature. The manuscript reads uneven in the current English version, but the topic and concepts presented are of global interest and add to the disaster planning, response, and recovery knowledge base.Crisis situations (CS) are, unfortunately, happening in present days in each world side. And in this case, medical evacuation (ME) becomes necessary to save human lives. The presented study is regarding the description and analysis of the phases, peculiarities, and perspectives of ME organization and development. The study characterized the inter-sectoral method of the planning, and realization of crisis outcomes liquidation is provided. Four main ways of the realization of approaches that could guarantee the development of the ME system were found. Also has been identified the number of main problems which the ME system faces. Among them are lack of personnel/equipment in the medical crews; high time of transportation; the noise pollution and vibration in time of evacuation by air; the infection and exposure risk of the evacuation aircrews in the places of mass destruction weapons usage; the organizational and legislative problems of the foreign citizens' evacuation; and ME of the persons from the oil and gas production places.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim: Organization of research work to substantiate and verify the potential development of emotional intelligence (EI) among student youth as a factor in preserving their mental health (MH) and adapting to crisis situations, in particular, those caused by military actions in Ukraine. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Materials and methods: The experimental base was 54 student-teachers of Vasyl Stefanyk Precarpathian National University (Ivano-Frankivsk, Ukraine). They were divided into a control group (34 people) and an experimental group (20 people), who participated in training according to the author's program. The questionnaire "Self-assessment of adaptability and well-being in crisis conditions of martial law" became the main prognostic tool of the research work. It was developed on the basis of D. Lusin's EI measurement technique, the MSCEIT test; the method of differential diagnosis of depressive states by V. Zung. RESULTS: Results: The research work consisted of two parts: theoretical (definition of terminology, conceptual concepts, hypotheses of research work; development of a structural model of EI) and experimental, which was implemented in three stages: ascertainment (determination of the initial level of EI of the participants of the experiment), formative (organization of training according to the author's experimental program), control (determination of changes in the level of proficiency of EI students). The positive influence of the author's program on the increase in the indicators of EG members' possession by four components of EI (informational; adaptive behavior; self-control; empathy) at three levels is substantiated: high - an increase from 12.25% to 25%; average decrease from 43.75 to 47%; low - a decrease from 44% to 28.75%. The common, special, excellent results of our research work and experimental studies of other authors are shown. CONCLUSION: Conclusions: The conducted study generally confirmed the hypothesis that thanks to the training of EI (in particular, its four components: informational; adaptive behavior; self-control; empathy) can become an effective factor in preserving a person's MH and adapting to crisis situations. The prognostic toolkit presented in the work, the procedure for formalizing the results of the experiment, and the methodology of the author's training program for the formation of EI are extremely representative, understandable, and valid. Since the research is based on materials that are publicly available on the Internet, its results can be used and developed by either scientists or medical and social workers, practicing teaching. All life crises, including those caused by military events, mass casualties and large-scale destruction, get to the end sooner or later. Therefore, their experience should be carefully studied in order to effectively use the potential of EI in increasing human life resources.

RESUMEN

AIM: The purpose of this study was to define crisis leadership in the nursing context. BACKGROUND: Leadership during critical situations is perhaps the most crucial element for crisis resolution. METHODS: Rodgers' evolutionary approach was used to conduct a concept analysis on crisis leadership and find its critical attributes, antecedents, and consequences. The researchers examined articles published in English and Korean from six databases. Articles from 2000 to 2016-with the key terms of crisis leadership, crisis management, crisis intervention, crisis, and disaster-were considered for analysis. Eleven studies were included in the final review. RESULTS: The core attributes of crisis leadership from a nursing perspective consisted of six attributes: clear, fast, frank communication; a high degree of collaboration; sharing of information; decision-making and fair prioritization; building trust; competency. CONCLUSIONS: Based on this review, crisis leadership should be revised to focus on competency, nursing interventions, measurement tools, and training protocol development.

RESUMEN

Interprofessional and intraprofessional collaboration in crises situations in the intensive care unit regarding COVID-19 - a qualitative, retrospective analysis Abstract. Background: Interprofessional collaboration is elementary in the intensive care unit, a success factor in difficult patient situations and complex therapies. The COVID-19-pandemic challenged newly composed treatment teams, however, experience does not exist. Aim: We analyzed personal experiences and views on inter- and intraprofessional collaboration in intensive care units during the COVID-19-pandemic and identified influencing factors. Methods: We used a qualitative, retrospective study design, collected data from physicians, nurses in intensive care, anesthesia and surgery and physiotherapists during group discussions using the story / dialogue method. We analyzed the data according to Mayring's Qualitative content analysis. Results: We identified two main categories, each with three sub-categories: 1. Mastering a exceptional situation actively (Recognizing a common goal; Acting in solidarity; Getting to know each other in inter- / intraprofessional collaboration), 2. Having overcome the exceptional situation in retrospect (Maintaining personal contacts; Gaining new knowledge and perspectives; Taking what has been learned into the future). The participants rated the interprofessional and intraprofessional collaboration as good to very good. Conclusions: Factors promoting collaboration and positive experiences are to be incorporated into everyday work. The intraprofessional management team thereby defines common goals and values for the best possible patient care.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic has challenged the worldviews of most people. Social isolation after the COVID-19 lockdown has not only led to economic difficulties but also resulted in adverse psychological reactions. As in most countries, including Poland, this situation has been very challenging for patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). In Poland, a crisis intervention team for patients with T1DM was established. The goal of the team was to provide psychological support for these patients, if needed, and to present information concerning how these patients may obtain medical consultations and prescriptions. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to analyze the psychological parameters and main emotional reactions of patients with T1DM during the COVID-19 lockdown. METHODS: An email with information concerning the possibility of having a web-based consultation with psychologists and psychiatrists and an attached set of psychological tests was sent to all patients with T1DM who were under the care of an outpatient diabetes clinic. The consultations were performed by licensed clinical psychologists and psychologists. This study was approved by the Bioethics Committee of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. RESULTS: The patients who decided to use psychological support had statistically higher levels of anxiety (state P=.043; trait P=.022), stress (P=.001) than those of patients from the group who did not seek support. CONCLUSIONS: The presented intervention team may be perceived as an example of important and successful cooperation and communication between specialists of different fields of medicine (diabetology, psychiatry, and psychology) in a crisis situation.

RESUMEN

Our work has been carried out with the aim of providing a solution to decision-making problems encountered in information systems for supply chains in crisis situation. The supply chain represents a competitive advantage that companies seek to perpetuate. It aims to optimize the exchanges, or flows, that the company maintains with its suppliers and its customers. These flows can be of various natures. It can be information flows relating to supplies or product design, financial flows linked to purchases, or even flows of goods. The crisis management logistics is getting more and more attention, especially in the current context of the COVID-19 pandemic. For these systems, where it is never very easy to anticipate the evolution of the environment, the forms of changes undergone are varied and rapid. We aim to provide an answer to these challenges, in an approach that links optimization methods to the paradigm of artificial intelligence. We therefore propose to find mathematical models, and inter-agent cooperation protocols, to minimize the risk of stock shortage in any area of the supply chain.

RESUMEN

In their day-to-day practice, psychiatric caregivers are frequently confronted with difficult clinical situations, or crises, which require a rapid and appropriate nursing response. While most of these situations are managed and contained by the professionals present, others will require, depending on their criticality, outside help in order to guarantee greater clinical pertinence and a safe environment.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Anaesthesiologists may occasionally manage life-threatening operating room (OR) emergencies. Managing OR emergencies implies real-time analysis of often complicated situations, prompt medical knowledge retrieval, coordinated teamwork and effective decision making in stressful settings. Checklists are recommended to improve performance and reduce the risk of medical errors. This study aimed to assess the usefulness of the French Society of Anaesthesia and Intensive Care's (SFAR) "Malignant Hyperthermia" (MH) checklist on a simulated episode of MH crisis and management thereof by registered anesthesiologists. METHODS: Twenty-four anaesthesiologists were allocated to 2 groups (checklist and control). Their technical performance in adherence with the SFAR guidelines was assessed by a 30-point score and their non-technical performance was assessed by the Anaesthetists' Non-Technical Skills (ANTS) score. Every task completion was assessed independently. Data are shown as median (first-third quartiles). RESULTS: Anaesthesiologists in the checklist group had higher technical performance scores (24/30 (21.5-25) vs 18/30 (15.5-19.5), P=0.002) and ANTS scores (56.5/60 (47.5-58) vs 48.5/60 (41-50.5), P=0.024). They administered the complete initial dose of dantrolene (2mg/kg) more quickly (15.7 minutes [13.9-18.3] vs 22.4 minutes [18.6-25]) than the control group (P=0.017). However, anaesthesiologists deemed the usability of the checklist to be perfectible. CONCLUSION: Registered anaesthesiologists' use of the MH checklist during a simulation session widely improved their adherence to guidelines and non-technical skills. This study strongly suggests the benefit of checklist tools for emergency management. Notwithstanding, better awareness and training for anaesthesiologists could further improve the use of this tool.
