RESUMEN

Selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx by ammonia is one of the dominant pollution abatement technologies for near-zero NOx emission diesel engines. A crucial step in the reduction of NOx to N2 with Cu zeolite NH3-SCR catalysts is the generation of a multi-electron donating active site, implying the permanent or transient dimerization of Cu ions. Cu atom mobility has been implicated by computational chemistry as a key factor in this process. This report demonstrates how variable temperature 1H NMR reveals the Cu induced generation of sharp 1H resonances associated with a low concentration of sites on the zeolite. The onset temperature of the appearance of these signals was found to strongly correlate with the NH3-SCR activity and was observed for a range of catalysts covering multiple frameworks (CHA, AEI, AFX, ERI, ERI-CHA, ERI-OFF, *BEA), with different Si/Al ratios and different Cu contents. The results point towards universal applicability of variable temperature NMR to predict the activity of a Cu-zeolite SCR catalyst. The unique relationship of a spectroscopic feature with catalytic behavior for zeolites with different structures and chemical compositions is exceptional in heterogeneous catalysis.

High carbonate content of the European Kupferschiefer ore deposits is a challenge for acid copper leaching (pH ≤ 2). Therefore investigating the mobility behavior of Cu(II) under conditions related to an alternative, neutrophil biohydrometallurgical Cu(II) leaching approach is of interest. As glutamic acid (Glu) might be present as a component in the growth media, we studied its effects on the adsorption of Cu(II) onto kaolinite. The binary and ternary batch sorption measurements of Cu(II) and Glu onto kaolinite were performed in the presence of 10 mM NaClO4 as background electrolyte and at a pH range from 4 to 9. Sorption experiments were modeled by the charge-distribution multi-site ion complexation (CD-MUSIC) model by using single sorption site (≡SOH) and monodentate surface complexation reactions. Glu sorption on kaolinite is weak (<10%) and independent of pH. Furthermore, Glu slightly enhances the Cu(II) sorption at low pH but strongly hinders (up to 50%) the sorption at higher pH and therewith enhances copper mobility. The results of isotherms show that Cu(II)-Glu sorption onto kaolinite mimics the Freundlich model. The proposed CD-MUSIC model provides a close fit to the experimental data and predicts the sorption of Cu(II), Cu(II)-Glu and Glu onto kaolinite as well as the effect of Glu on Cu(II) mobility.

The paper deals with effects of liming and different doses of municipal sewage sludge (5, 10, and 15 % of soil mass) on copper speciation in soil. In all samples, pH was determined together with total copper concentration, which was measured with the ICP-AES method. Concentration of copper chemical fractions was determined using the seven-step procedure of Zeien and Brümmer. In the soil treated with the highest dose of sludge (15 %), there was, compared to the control, a twofold increase in the concentration of copper and a threefold increase in the concentration of nitrogen. Copper speciation analysis showed that in the municipal sewage sludge the easily soluble and exchangeable fractions (F1 and F2) constituted only a small share of copper with the highest amount of this metal in the organic (F4) and residual (F7) fractions. In the soil, at the beginning of the experiment, the highest share was in the organic fraction (F4), the residual fraction (F7) but also in the fraction where copper is bound to amorphous iron oxides (F5). After 420 days, at the end of the experiment, the highest amount of copper was mainly in the organic fraction (F4) and in the fraction with amorphous iron oxides (F5). Due to mineralization of organic matter in the sewage sludge, copper was released into the soil with the share of the residual fraction (F7) decreasing. In this fraction, there was much more copper in limed soil than in non-limed soil.
