OBJECTIVE: The present study sought to assess the prevalence and determinants of tobacco use (cigarette smoking and shisha use) and khat chewing among Yemeni adolescents, and to evaluate their knowledge and attitudes toward these habits. METHODS: This school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 13 to 19-year-old students attending middle/high schools (both private and public) across five main cities in Yemen. Data were collected using self-administered questionnaires comprising questions/items related to sociodemographic data, cigarette smoking, shisha use, khat chewing, and knowledge on and attitudes toward these habits. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were used to explore the most determinant factors. RESULTS: A total of 7505 students were recruited from 42 schools across five major cities in Yemen. The prevalence rates of khat chewing, cigarette smoking, and shisha use were 42.4%, 6.8%, and 19.3%, respectively. Compared to females, male subjects reported significantly higher prevalence of khat chewing (51.4% vs. 23.5%, p < 0.001), shisha use (20.3% vs. 17.2%, p < 0.01), and cigarette smoking (8.8% vs. 2.6%, p < 0.001). Male gender, older age, poor knowledge, khat chewing, parents' low education level, and parents' and peers' smoking habits were significant determinants of adolescents' cigarette smoking status. Private education, male gender, older age, poor knowledge, parents' low education level, and parents' and peers' khat chewing habits were significant determinants of adolescents' khat chewing status. The participant's knowledge of and attitudes toward tobacco use and khat chewing were inadequate. CONCLUSION: The prevalence of khat chewing, shisha use, and to lesser extent cigarette smoking among Yemeni adolescents is high that needs immediate intervention. The results highlight the urgent need to implement prevention strategies to tackle these habits among the youth in Yemen.

As ear-related technologies proliferate, optimizing comfort, retention, and battery life is crucial for enhancing user experience. A thorough understanding of the anatomical interaction between the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and the earcanal during mouth-opening is essential. This study develops a finite element model and an experimental setup to investigate the biomechanical coupling between the TMJ and the earcanal. We analyze reverse-static deformations, focusing on cartilage-bone junction geometry, mandibular condyle location, and concha mobility. The earcanal geometry is assessed across five cross-sections with seven key dimensions measured. The results indicate that the deformations in cantilever-beam-like models closely match the reference geometry in both approaches, particularly in the lateral region. These findings suggest that a dynamic motion model of the earcanal, accurately simulating its behavior, is feasible.

BACKGROUND: Chewing gum is a healthy, cheap, and familiar solution for patients with premature irritation of the stomach and intestines. This study compared the effect of chewing gum and the routine method on ileus after burns. METHODS: This study is a randomized clinical trial conducted in Valiasr Hospital in Arak, Markazi Province, in the center of Iran, from December 2021 to February 2023. After the diagnosis of intestinal ileus in 83 patients hospitalized in the burn department by a general surgeon, with the available sampling method, these patients were evaluated based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria of the study. As a result, 66 patients were selected and divided into groups A (33 patients in the intervention group: routine care + gum chewing) and B (33 patients in the control group: routine care) by random allocation method. For the intervention group, from entering the ward until the beginning of oral feeding, gum (without sugar) was chewed four times a day for 15 min, while control groups received the routine diet of the department. Both groups' condition of the bowel sounds, time of passing gas, and stool were recorded. The statistical analyses were performed using SPSS version 16. The chi-squared, Fisher's exact, Independent t-test, and Mann-Whitney U tests were utilized. RESULTS: The results showed that the median bowel sound return time, time of the first gas discharge, earliest defecation time, and time to start the diet were significantly shorter in the intervention group than in the control group (P < 0.001). CONCLUSION: This study showed the effect of chewing gum without sugar in shortening the symptoms of intestinal ileus after burns. However, it was not effective in reducing the hospitalization period of patients. According to these results, it is recommended to add chewing gum to the routine care of people hospitalized due to burns. Introduction: The tongue plays an important role in mastication, swallowing, and articulation, but it cannot be directly observed because of its location inside the oral cavity. This study aimed to clarify detailed 3D tongue movements during chewing using electromagnetic articulography (EMA). Materials and Methods: The participants were 10 healthy, young volunteers (average age 26.8 ± 2.1 years; 5 males, 5 females). Tongue and jaw movement during gum chewing was measured and recorded using EMA. Four EMA sensors were attached to the anterior, posterior, left, and right surfaces of the tongue, and one sensor was also attached to the mandibular left incisor. The tongue motion during the chewing cycle was spatially and sequentially analyzed based on the motion trajectories of the tongue and mandible. Results and Discussion: The tongue moved downward and to the masticatory side in a manner similar to the movement of the jaw. The anterior tongue marker moved downward to a greater extent than the other tongue markers. However, the tongue moved forward as the jaw moved backward. The anterior marker reached the most anterior position during the jaw-opening phase and the posterior markers reached the most anterior position during the jaw-closing phase. Just before maximum jaw-opening, all markers on the tongue reached the bottom lowest position. During the jaw-closing phase, the tongue reached the dominant farthest position in the masticatory side. All the markers reached the most posterior position during the occlusal phase. Conclusion: These findings demonstrate the sequence of tongue motion patterns during gum chewing.

BACKGROUND: Oral health care behaviors during pregnancy affects maternal and child health outcomes. This scoping review sought to map the existing literature on the oral healthcare behaviors of pregnant women in Nigeria. METHODS: PubMed, Science Direct, Web of Science, EBSCOHOST, Sabinet, African Index Medicus, and Scopus data based were searched in August 2023. Articles with reports on the oral health behavior of pregnant women in Nigeria, published in English in peer review were included in the review. Articles whose full lengths could not be accessed, and commentaries on studies, and letters to the editor were also excluded. Data on authors and year of publication of the study, study location, study objective, study design, methodological approach for data collection, and study outcomes were extracted and descriptively synthesized. RESULTS: The search yielded a total of 595 articles of which 573 were unique. Only 21 articles were left after titles and abstracts screening and only 18 articles met the eligibility criteria. The proportion of pregnant women had utilized dental services ranged from 4 to 62.9%, the use of toothbrush and toothpaste ranged from 59.6 to 99.3%, twice daily tooth brushing ranged from 5.2 to 66.9%, and the use of toothbrush among pregnant women in the studies varies from 70.9 to 100%. Chewing stick was used by 0.1-27.7% of study participants. Dental problems such as caries, pain, swollen gums, and excessive salivation were reasons for seeking dental care. We identified individual, structural, and behavioral factors, including myths as barriers for dental service utilization. CONCLUSION: This scoping review shows that dental service utilization by pregnant women in Nigeria is poor and mainly due to curative than preventive needs. Oral health behaviours also need to be improved through tailored oral health education accessible to pregnant women in Nigeria.

PURPOSE: Physiological and erosive wear reported in clinical studies were reviewed, and in vitro aging models were developed to simulate and compare the effect of aging on human teeth with the review data obtained from clinical studies. METHODS: A review of clinical studies and randomized clinical trials that quantify enamel wear was performed in the PubMed database. The first in vitro analysis evaluated the effect of mechanical chewing simulation only. Enamel specimens were aged in the chewing simulator (up to 1.2 million cycles) with two occlusal loads (30 and 50 N). In the second in vitro analysis, specimens were aged in two aging models. The first model (MT) simulated mechanical and thermal oral challenges: MT1- 240,000 chewing and 10,000 thermal cycles, MT2- 480,000 chewing and 20,000 thermal cycles, MT3- 1.2 million chewing and 50,000 thermal cycles. The second model (MTA) simulated mechanical, thermal, and acidic oral challenges as follows: MTA1- 240,000 chewing, 10,000 thermal and 3-h acidic cycles; MTA2: 480,000 chewing, 20,000 thermal and 6-h acidic cycles, MTA3- 1.2 million chewing, 50,000 thermal and 15-h acidic cycles. RESULTS: The review included 13 clinical studies evaluating tooth wear (eight physiological and five erosive). The results estimated the annual average physiological wear as 38.4 µm (9.37-51). In comparison, the MT1 showed wear of 60 (24) µm. Also, the average annual erosive wear in the literature was 179.5 µm (70-265) compared to MTA1-induced wear of 209 (14) µm. CONCLUSION: There was wide variation in tooth wear reported in clinical studies, suggesting a critical need for more accurate studies, possibly based on scanning technologies. Despite this, the data reported using the novel aging models are within a range to be considered consistent with and to simulate tooth wear measured in vivo.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to compare the salivary proteomic profile of smokeless tobacco users with that of non-users and oral cancer patients using Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry/ Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS/MS). METHODS: Saliva samples from 65 participants were collected in three groups: control (25 participants), smokeless tobacco users (25 participants), and oral cancer (15 participants). RESULTS: The analysis revealed 343 protein groups with significantly altered abundance in the saliva samples (P < 0.05). Among these, 43 out of 51 dysregulated proteins in the smokeless tobacco group were also dysregulated in the oral cancer group. Notably, Apolipoprotein A1 (ApoA1) and Pon1 were found to be significantly increased in both smokeless tobacco users and oral cancer patients (p < 0.05). Furthermore, six out of the 20 most significantly altered proteins were mitochondrial proteins, and all of these were decreased relative to controls in both smokeless tobacco users and cancer samples. CONCLUSION: The proteomic profile of users of chewing (smokeless) tobacco (SLT) shows substantial overlap in the altered pathways and dysregulated proteins with those altered in oral cancer samples, suggesting that SLT use induces a shift toward an oncogenic state. Specifically indicated pathways included blood microparticles, platelet α-granules and protease inhibitors as well as indicators of oxidative stress and exogenous compound processing. What differentiates oral cancer samples from SLT users is enrichment of alterations related to cytoskeletal organisation and tissue remodelling. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: The findings emphasize the importance of salivary proteomic profiles because changes in certain proteins may be indicators for early oral cancer identification and risk assessment in smokeless tobacco users.

BACKGROUND: Bilateral posterior crossbite (BPXB) is a severe malocclusion associated with maxillary hypoplasia. BPXB may involve the same or a different number of teeth between the sides. OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the masticatory function in BPXB and the association between the masticatory alterations and the occlusal features of BPXB. METHODS: This observational study included 170 participants: 130 patients with BPXB (65 occlusally symmetric BPXB, i.e. same number and type of posterior teeth in crossbite between the sides, F = 33, M = 32, median age 9.6 (8.2-13) [years.months]; 65 patients occlusally asymmetric BPXB, F = 30, M = 35, median age 9.9 (8.3-13.6)) and 40 controls (F = 25, M = 15, median age 10.2 (9.4-11.6)). The masticatory function was evaluated by the detection of the Reverse Chewing Cycles (RCCs) recorded with a kinesiograph using standardised soft and hard boluses. RESULTS: The frequency of RCCs was significantly increased in all BPXB patients compared to controls (p < .000). In symmetric BPXB patients, there were no significant differences in the frequency of RCCs during chewing on the left or the right side. In asymmetric BPXB patients, the frequency of RCCs was significantly increased during chewing on the side with relatively more teeth in crossbite (p < .000). CONCLUSIONS: The masticatory function was significantly altered in all BPXB patients and it was differently affected by symmetric or asymmetric occlusal features of the malocclusion.

Oral frailty can contribute to physical and mental health disorders. Previous research has shown an association between frailty and self-reported difficulty in chewing or swallowing. However, their combined assessment has obscured their specific impact on frailty-related outcomes. To investigate the independent associations between difficulty in chewing or swallowing and 1-year frailty outcomes, while also examining their interactions. This retrospective cohort study utilized the DeSC database to identify older adults aged ≥ 75 years who underwent health checkups between April 2014 and November 2022. Multivariate Cox regression analyses were conducted to assess the association between self-reported difficulty in chewing or swallowing and outcomes, including hospitalization due to aspiration pneumonia, all-cause hospitalization, and all-cause mortality within 1 year. Interactions between chewing and swallowing difficulties were also evaluated. Among 359,111 older adults, 39.0% reported oral function difficulties. Swallowing difficulty alone lacked significant outcome association. However, chewing difficulty alone was significantly associated with higher risks of hospitalization due to aspiration pneumonia (hazard ratio (HR), 1.35; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.15-1.58; P < 0.001), all-cause hospitalization (HR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.05-1.11; P < 0.001), and all-cause mortality (HR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.14-1.44; P < 0.001) compared with no self-reported difficulty. A significant positive interaction between self-reported difficulty in chewing and swallowing was observed for all-cause mortality (P = 0.009). Self-reported difficulty in chewing was significantly associated with higher risks of hospitalization due to aspiration pneumonia, all-cause hospitalization, and all-cause mortality among older adults. Chewing and swallowing difficulties showed a synergistic effect, significantly increasing all-cause mortality risk.

BACKGROUND: Masticatory muscle training by chewing gum can be performed easily and improve masticatory muscle function and strength. However, increased masticatory muscle activity and function may alter the mandibular shape. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to investigate the effects of gum chewing training on the occlusal force, masseter muscle thickness (MMT) and mandibular shape in healthy adults. METHODS: We conducted a prospective randomised controlled trial from January 2020 to September 2020 at the Yonsei University College of Dentistry. Fifty-eight participants were randomly assigned to the training and control groups. The training group chewed gum three times a day for 6 months, while the control group received no training. Changes in the maximum occlusal force and MMT were evaluated at baseline and after 1, 3 and 6 months. Changes in the mandibular shape were evaluated at baseline and after 6 months. RESULTS: The mean maximum occlusal force of the training group at 3 months was significantly higher than that at baseline, which was also significantly different from that in the control group (p < .001). As the maximum occlusal force increased, the occlusal contact area also increased (p = .020). There was no statistically significant difference in MMT or mandibular shape compared to the baseline. CONCLUSION: Mastication training using gum increases maximum occlusal force due to an increase in occlusal contact area but has no effect on MMT or mandibular shape.

Background and Objectives: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common issue for females undergoing gynecological surgeries, including those assisted by robotic systems. Despite available prophylactic measures, the incidence of PONV remains high, negatively impacting recovery and increasing healthcare costs. This study evaluates whether preoperative gum chewing reduces the need for anti-emetic drugs in females undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign ovarian mass. Materials and Methods: This prospective, single-blinded, randomized controlled trial enrolled 92 adult females scheduled for robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery to treat benign ovarian mass. Following exclusions, the remaining participants were randomly assigned to either a gum-chewing group or a no-gum-chewing group. The gum-chewing group chewed sugar-free gum for 15 min in the holding area before surgery. The primary outcome measured was the need for anti-emetics to control PONV during the first hour in the post-anesthesia care unit (PACU). Secondary outcomes included the number of anti-emetic requests. No preemptive anti-emetics were administered during surgery. Results: Out of the initial 92 patients, 88 were included in the final analysis, with 44 in each group. The incidence of PONV requiring anti-emetics in the PACU was significantly lower in the gum-chewing group (79.5%) compared to the no-gum-chewing group (95.5%). Additionally, the number of anti-emetic requests was higher in the no-gum-chewing group. No postoperative complications such as tooth or jaw pain/injury or gastric content regurgitation were reported. Conclusions: Preoperative gum chewing for 15 min immediately before surgery significantly reduced the incidence of PONV in females undergoing robot-assisted laparoscopic surgery for benign ovarian mass. This simple, non-pharmacological intervention improved patient comfort and reduced the need for anti-emetic medications without any adverse effects. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings and to develop guidelines for incorporating preoperative gum chewing into clinical practice.

This study examined the effects of khat chewing on oral gingival conditions by adopting a targeted process which combined physicochemical analyses of the teeth, histopathological examinations of the gums, and bioinformatics modeling. The physicochemical evaluation of teeth in khat consumers compared to non-consumers was carried out using specific analytical techniques; hence, the results of this initial investigation revealed significant erosion of the tooth enamel due to khat chewing, as well as an alteration of the essential chemical composition of the teeth. Additionally, the histopathological analyses complemented preliminary studies by showing severe inflammation of the gums and oral mucosa in khat users. The understanding of these studies was enriched by bioinformatics analysis, where modeling was carried out via computational methods. This analytical phase examined molecular docking mechanisms, including the interaction between cathinone, the main alkaloid of khat, and the protein receptors involved in the protection of gingival tissues against infections. In summary, this multidisciplinary research provided an in-depth view of the oral health issues related to khat chewing, combining experimental studies with bioinformatics perspectives.

BACKGROUND: Children with Down syndrome (DS) experience more difficulties with oral motor skills, including chewing, drinking, and swallowing. The present study attempts to measure the preliminary effectiveness of Global Intensive Feeding Therapy (GIFT) in DS. GIFT is a new rehabilitation program addressing the specific difficulties and needs of each child, focusing on sensory and motor oral abilities. It follows an intensive schedule comprising 15 sessions over 5 consecutive days, with 3 sessions per day. The principles of GIFT are applied with specific objectives for DS. METHODS: GIFT was preliminarily implemented among 20 children diagnosed with DS. To measure the efficacy of GIFT, the Karaduman Chewing Performance Scale (KCPS), the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI), and the Pediatric Screening-Priority Evaluation Dysphagia (PS-PED) were used. Data were analyzed using the Wilcoxon signed-rank test before (T0) and after intervention (T1) and at one-month follow-up (T2). The effect size was also measured for specific outcomes, using Kendall's W. RESULTS: Our findings revealed that children with DS showed no risk of dysphagia according to the PS-PED (mean score 2.80). Furthermore, statistically significant improvements in chewing performance were observed, as measured by the KCPS (p < 0.01), as well as in texture acceptance and modification, as measured by the IDDSI post-intervention (p < 0.01). For both the KCPS and IDDSI, a large effect size was found (Kendall's W value > 0.8). Parents/caregivers continued using GIFT at home, and this allowed for a positive outcome at the one-month follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: GIFT proved to be effective in the rehabilitation of feeding and swallowing disorders in children with DS, as well as for food acceptance.

The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of neroli-flavored chewing gum in reducing anxiety. A single-blind, two-group study was conducted on 72 university students. Participants were randomly assigned to either the commercial neroli-flavored chewing gum (CNC) group or the natural hydro-distilled neroli-flavored chewing gum (NNC) group. The research instrument used was Spielberger's State-Anxiety questionnaire. While there was no significant difference in anxiety scores between the CNC and NNC groups before the intervention, a significant difference was observed in anxiety scores 20 min after the intervention. Within-group comparisons indicated statistically significant differences between pre-test and post-test values of anxiety in the NNC group. The results of this study suggest that natural hydro-distilled neroli-flavored chewing gum can reduce anxiety in university students.

INTRODUCTION: Previous studies have identified several risk factors for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). This study was intended to examine the potential risk of ACS associated with khat and tobacco use. METHODS: A case-control study of 344 people (172 cases and 172 controls) was conducted at Prince Mohammed Bin Nasser Hospital in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, from April to September 2019. The cases and controls were matched for age (±5 years) and gender. Data were analyzed using descriptive, inferential, and modeling analyses. We utilized the adjusted odds ratio (AOR) to express the results. RESULTS: The prevalence of ever khat chewing among all study participants was 29.1%, significantly higher for the cases with ACS than for the control group (43.6% vs 14.5%, p<0.001). Cigarette smokers accounted for 33.4% of the study participants, and 22.1% were ACS cases, which is a significantly higher percentage than the control group. The prevalence of smokeless tobacco was 20.3% among ACS cases and 14.5% among controls, with no statistically significant differences (p>0.05). In the final model, tobacco use was more likely to be reported among cases with myocardial infarction (MI) (AOR=4.58; 95% CI: 1.01-4.73, p<0.05) as was khat chewing (AOR=3.4; 95% CI: 1.55-7.46, p<0.05), after controlling for other traditional risk factors. CONCLUSIONS: Khat chewing was reported more by those who reported ACS. ACS cases were more likely to be frequent khat users with chewing sessions of five or more days per week. Regular tobacco use was also reported in those who reported ACS, and this increases with the amount of tobacco used. Implementing early intervention strategies can help mitigate the impact of khat chewing and smoking on the development of ACS.

Motion sickness also known as kinetosis is a condition in which there exists a disagreement between visually perceived movement and the vestibular system's sense of movement. Nausea, vomiting, dizziness, fatigue, and headache are the most common symptoms of motion sickness. This study mainly focuses on the taste masking of Promethazine Hydrochloride (PMZ) by inclusion complexation method, its formulation development in the chewing gum form by using directly compressible gum base HIG® and its quality and performance testing. Different molar ratios (1:1, 1:2, 1:3 and 1:4) of PMZ-cyclodextrin complexes were prepared by using ß-Cyclodextrin (ß-CD) as a taste masking agent. These complexes were evaluated for FTIR, DSC, % Entrapment Efficiency, % drug yield, and taste evaluation by E-Tongue. The optimized ratio was further evaluated by sophisticated analytical techniques such as Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-Ray Diffraction (XRD). A central composite design (CCD) (3 ^2) was utilized to examine the effects of independent variables (amount of gum-X1 and amount of plasticizer-X2) on dependent variables (%CDRY1 and hardness Y2). The prepared gums were evaluated for drug content, organoleptic properties, in-vitro dissolution testing by fabricated disintegration apparatus, texture analysis, etc. The optimization statistics showed that on decreasing the amount of gum, in- vitro drug release increases and hardness decreases. The optimized batch MCG-2 of Promethazine MCG showed 92.34 ± 0.92% of drug release, whereas for marketed formulation (Phenergan®-25 mg) drug release value was 86.19 ± 1.88%. Results provided evidence that PMZ MCGs could be a better alternative to conventional tablet formulations with improved drug release, palatability and texture.

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of chewing gum and using bite wafers in reducing pain after the placement of separators in orthodontic patients and to compare that efficiency with ibuprofen use. Additionally, this study evaluated the effect of non-pharmacological pain control methods on the frequency of separators falling out. Methods: The study sample comprised 105 female patients between 15 and 35 years of age. The patients were randomly selected and classified into three groups (35 each). Each group was given either ibuprofen, viscoelastic bite wafers, or chewing gum immediately after the placement of separators and every 8 h for 1 week, as needed. The patients were asked to record their pain perception using a visual analog scale following separator placement at 2 h, 6 h, bedtime, 24 h, and at 2, 3, and 7 days. Analysis of variance testing was used for the data analysis. Results: Among the three studied groups, there were no significant differences in pain perception at any time point. The patients experienced significantly higher pain scores at bedtime and 24 h after separator placement. In addition, there were statistically significant findings in pain perception at different time points within each pain relief method (p = 0.000, p < 0.05). Conclusion: The use of chewing gum and bite wafers in alleviating orthodontic pain was beneficial and comparable to ibuprofen use following the placement of separators before orthodontic treatment among orthodontic patients.

Oral cancer represents the greatest cause of cancer-related morbidity and death in the majority of areas where tobacco use is common. There is accumulating evidence that the quantities of essential elements change with the beginning and progression of malignant disease. Essential elements operate as a micro-source in numerous metabolic reactions. To provide an area for the particularly important or necessary trace elements like selenium, excess of iodine (I), iron (Fe), zinc (Zn), and other minor elements other trace element disorders such as oculopharyngeal muscular dystrophy (OPMD) are treated using antioxidants. However, even elevated ingestion of these trace elements such as copper could lead to oral submucosa disorder and the advancement of diversified oral diseases and conditions. Trace element enzymes play a very vital role in a variety of biological and chemical events. In redox operations, some trace elements are complicated. Oral potentially malignant fibrosis has a profound influence on the body and early oral symptoms are frequently used to diagnose such disorders. The objective is to elaborate on the role and significance of various trace elements in oral submucous fibrosis.

Objectives: Chewing gum has been shown to improve aspects of cognition and mood with sustained attention being particularly receptive to the effects of chewing. Chewing gum may also be a useful vehicle for administering functional ingredients. The herbal extract Rhodiola rosea and certain B-vitamins have previously been shown to improve aspects of cognition and subjective state, but their combined effects have not been studied to date.Methods: The current randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, balanced crossover study compared the effects of a functional gum containing Rhodiola rosea and B-vitamins to flavour-matched regular chewing gum and a flavour-matched placebo. Thirty-six healthy young participants completed measures of attention and mood at baseline, during chewing, and 1-h after chewing.Results: Chewing both functional and regular gum was shown to reduce errors on a digit vigilance task compared to placebo irrespective of whether measured during or after chewing. There were no benefits to adding functional ingredients to the gum.Discussion: Future chewing research should consider different formats of placebo. Sex differences in response to chewing and the impact of rate and intensity of chewing should also be explored.Trial registration: ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05544500.
