RESUMEN

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effect of the transport distance and lairage time on behavioral indicators of zebu beef cattle in the resting pen of a slaughterhouse using the focal animal technique. Eight lots of male zebu cattle, Nelore, aged approximately 4 years old, weighing on average 500 ± 28.5 kg-1, from different municipalities, transported by land, were evaluated. The lots were grouped into two categories: short distance (> 500 km) and long distance (> 500 km). Five focal animals per evaluated lot were used in each cycle of behavior observation, randomly chosen, and visually identified. The animal focal sampling method was used, with instantaneous recording, every 5 min per animal/h. A video camera was used and placed at a fixed point in the corral. After slaughtering, bruises and carcass pH were evaluated. The respiratory rate (RR) was measured in two moments, 30 min after unloading (RR_I) and 1 h before slaughtering (RR_F); behavioral data were divided into four lairage periods (1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th) equally and evaluated as repeated measures over time. The lairage time lowered the behaviors of headbutting (NCHBs), pushing (PsH), mounting (MT), and chasing away (CA), (p = 0.0001), and these behaviors were more evident in animals transported for short distances in the initial resting times, decreasing as they remained in the resting pen. There was effect of distance on the initial and final pH of the carcass, being greater in the short distance (p = 0.047). There was no effect of distance or lairage time on initial or final RR (p > 0.05). In addition, animals transported over long distances showed less carcass injuries, which were observed during post mortem inspection. It is concluded that animals transported over short distances present a greater number of agonistic behaviors, such as NCHBs, MT, PsH, and CA, predisposing to higher rates of bruising during lairage and more accentuated changes in the final pH of the meat.

RESUMEN

Introduction: Negative pressure therapy gains ground in surgical practice as an intervention to improve healing. Post-bariatric patients undergoing abdominal dermolipectomy are at increased risk of local complications. There is a notable dearth of current Brazilian studies on this. This study aims to analyze the presence of complications in patients undergoing post-bariatric dermolipectomy surgery with negative pressure dressing in closed surgical incisions. Method: Descriptive study that evaluated complications of surgical incisions in 20 patients undergoing post-bariatric dermolipectomy surgery with negative pressure therapy. Data tabulated in Windows Excel software and analyzed in the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 18.0 program. Qualitative variables were presented in simple frequency and quantitative as mean, standard deviation, and amplitude. CEP-UNISUL approved the study. Results: 20 patients undergoing negative pressure therapy, 80% (n=16) female, mean age 39.55 years (±9.08). Anchor incision was chosen in 70% (n=14) of the surgeries, with an average tissue removal of 1940 grams (±710.37) and hospitalization time of 40.20 hours (±19.18), corresponding to 1,66 daily. Only 15% (n=3) of patients had complications (dehiscence, seroma, and hematoma, which occurred in the same proportion). There was no case of necrosis. Conclusion: The use of negative pressure therapy in closed surgical incisions of post-bariatric dermolipectomy seems to contribute to reducing postoperative complications.

Dados tabulados no software Windows Excel e analisados no programa Statistical Package for the Social Sciences 18.0.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Implantable cardioverter defibrillators are used to prevent sudden cardiac death. The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter-defibrillator was newly developed to overcome the limitations of the conventional implantable cardioverter defibrillator-transvenous device. The subcutaneous implantable cardioverter defibrillator is indicated for young patients with heart disease, congenital heart defects, and poor venous access, who have an indication for implantable cardioverter defibrillator without the need for anti-bradycardic stimulation. We aimed to compare the efficacy and complications of subcutaneous with transvenous implantable cardioverter- defibrillator devices. METHODOLOGY: A systematic review was conducted using different databases. The inclusion criteria were observational and clinical randomized trials with no language limits and no publication date limit that compared subcutaneous with transvenous implantable cardioverter-defibrillators. The selected patients were aged > 18 years with complex ventricular arrhythmia. RESULTS: Five studies involving 2111 patients who underwent implantable cardioverter defibrillator implantation were included. The most frequent complication in the subcutaneous device group was infection, followed by hematoma formation and electrode migration. For the transvenous device, the most frequent complications were electrode migration and infection. Regarding efficacy, the total rates of appropriate shocks were 9.04% and 20.47% in the subcutaneous and transvenous device groups, respectively, whereas inappropriate shocks to the subcutaneous and transvenous device groups were 11,3% and 10,7%, respectively. CONCLUSION: When compared to the transvenous device, the subcutaneous device had lower complication rates owing to lead migration and less inappropriate shocks due to supraventricular tachycardia; nevertheless, infection rates and improper shocks due to T wave oversensing were comparable for both devices CRD42021251569.

Beef production is of great importance worldwide and, in Brazil, it plays a fundamental role in the country's economy, making it one of the largest producers, consumers and exporters. Meat quality is influenced by several factors, and among these, the occurrence of bruises on carcasses is highlighted and, consequently, losses due to commercial restrictions stands out. Thus, this research aimed to establish the occurrence of bruises in bovine carcasses diverted to the Department of Final Inspection (DIF), with the total condemnation of the carcass, from January 4 to September 15, 2022, in an abattoir under Federal Inspection Service (SIF), located in the State of Espírito Santo, Brazil. A set of 20,864 males and 1,927 females were slaughtered and inspected, totaling 22,791 bovines, of which 172 carcasses were diverted to the DIF, 7 of which were completely condemned (0.031% of the total), resulting in RS 37,490.10 of economic loss. To avoid the total condemnation of carcasses, effective animal welfare strategies must be implemented, making the Brazilian cattle industry continue to develop and reduce its losses.

RESUMEN

The bruise dating can have important medicolegal implications in family violence and violence against women cases. However, studies show that the medical specialist has 50% accuracy in classifying a bruise by age, mainly due to the variability of the images and the color of the bruise. This research proposes a model, based on deep convolutional neural networks, for bruise dating using only images, by age ranges, ranging from 0-2 days to 17-30 days, and images of healthy skin. A 2140 experimental bruise photograph dataset was constructed, for which a data capture protocol and a preprocessing procedure are proposed. Similarly, 20 classification models were trained with the Inception V3, Resnet50, MobileNet, and MnasNet architectures, where combinations of learning transfer, cross-validation, and data augmentation were used. Numerical experiments show that classification models based on MnasNet have better results, reaching 97.00% precision and sensitivity, and 99.50% specificity, exceeding 40% precision reported in the literature. Also, it was observed that the precision of the model decreases with the age of the bruise.

RESUMEN

Through a series of case scenarios, this article describes the assessment and management of suspected physical child abuse presenting as bruises and burns. Although it is not uncommon for school-age children to have accidental injuries, recognizing patterns associated with physical child abuse and understanding red flags for abuse is vital. Failure to recognize injury patterns suspicious for physical child abuse, and thus failure to intervene appropriately, may leave children at risk for more serious injury or death.

RESUMEN

Introduction: A hemophilia is a chronic disease of genetic origin caused by a mutation of the genes which encode blood clotting factors. One of the consequences of this alteration is the involvement of the musculoskeletal system, which may influence the posture of these individuals. Objective:To estimate the frequency of postural changes in hemophilia patients, and identify possible factors associated. Methods:A cross-sectional descriptive study, conducted with individuals aged ≥ 18 years, with diagnosis of hemophilia,in follow-up at the Hematology and Hemotherapy Foundation of Bahia (HEMOBA).The participants were submitted to postural evaluation, through visual analysis, Adams test and the application of a semi-structured form.Epi Info® (v.3.5.2) was used for data analysis and to verify the existence of associations between the variables of the study were used the Exact Fisher, Qui-Square and Qui-Square Tests with the Yates correction and considered as statistically significant associations with p <0.05.Results:Twenty-nine hemophiliacs participated in this study, with mean age of 34.98 ± 12,6 years, 25 (86.2%) reported having hemophilic arthropathy. Of the 13 research participants (68.4%) presented scoliotic posture detected by the Adams test. The change was more frequent in individuals with more than one joint affected by hemophilic arthropathy, with a statistically significant value for this variable (p = 0.039).Conclusion:The frequencies of postural changes in individuals with hemophilia are elevated with a significant association for individuals over 40 years of age and with with more than one joint affected by haemophilic arthropathy.
