RESUMEN
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a chronic disease that affects a person's general well-being. Current evidence sets an association between psychological well-being and controlled metabolic parameters. People newly diagnosed with T2DM show higher prevalence of depression and anxiety symptoms. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) has effectively improved psychological adjustment, but most studies do not specifically address recently diagnosed people nor usually include long-term follow-up measures. Objective: We sought to assess changes in psychological variables in people with newly diagnosed diabetes who received a cognitive-behavioral intervention, within a comprehensive care program. Method: 1208 adults with T2DM (≤5 years) who attended a national health institute in Mexico received a cognitive-behavioral intervention aimed at improving quality of life and reducing emotional distress that often interferes with diabetes control, as well as evaluating cognitive and emotional resources and social support. Measures of quality of life, diabetes-related distress, anxiety and depression questionnaires were compared at pre-test, post-test and follow up using Friedman's ANOVAs. Multiple logistic regression models evaluated glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) and triglycerides control at post-test and follow up. Results: Questionnaire measures and metabolic variables significantly decreased symptomatology at post-test and these changes maintained at follow-up. Significant associations were found between quality-of-life scores and HbA1c and triglycerides levels in post-test and follow-up. Diabetes-related distress scores increased the odds of having adequate HbA1c control at post-test. Conclusion: This study contributes to the evidence on the importance of considering psychological factors as part of comprehensive diabetes care to improve quality of life and emotional burden and facilitate the achievement of metabolic goals.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Changes in the profiles of patients have significant impacts on the health care system. Diabetes mellitus type 2 (T2DM) prevention and management should be studied in different contexts. OBJECTIVE: The Study of Health in Primary Care for the Amazonas Population (SAPPA) primarily aims to describe T2DM prevention and management actions offered by primary health care settings in Brazil and whether the care delivered is consistent with the chronic care model (CCM). Second, the study aims to examine the impact of T2DM management actions on health and lifestyle, and third, to understand how sociodemographic characteristics, health, and subjective outcomes impact diabetes management. METHODS: As part of this observational study, managers and health professionals complete a questionnaire containing information about T2DM prevention and management actions and CCM dimensions. During in-home visits, patients are asked about their health, lifestyle, sociodemographics, diabetes care, and subjective variables. RESULTS: A total of 34 managers, 1560 professional health workers, and 955 patients will be recruited. The data collection will be completed in October 2022. CONCLUSIONS: The SAPPA is an observational study that intends to understand the T2DM management process in primary health care, including planning, execution, reach, and impact on patient motivation and adherence. INTERNATIONAL REGISTERED REPORT IDENTIFIER (IRRID): DERR1-10.2196/37572.
RESUMEN
Recycling is socially responsible behavior. Moreover, it is also a complex behavior. It benefits society in the long term but involves a personal cost and does not benefit the individual directly. In the specific context of small island, we conducted a two-step research action to promote recycling among households located in the north of Martinique, a west indies French island. Based on the psychosocial engineering model, the first step was to identify the determinants of recycling in this specific island context. In a psycho-environmental diagnostic, we included variables already identified to predict waste sorting, such as the TPB variables, as well as other context-specific variables, such as group identification, environmental identity, place identity, sense of community, perceived efficacy of one's action, as predictors of the intention to recycle. Based on psychological distance and its temporal dimension, we also distinguished between the intention to recycle today (proximal intention) and the intention to recycle in 1 month (distal intention). The results show that the predictors of recycling differ according to the temporal distance. The proximal intention was predicted by personal variables whereas distal intention was predicted by social variables. The second step was to design and to implement an evidence-based intervention to increase the quality of recycling. At Time 1, the garbage cans of 193 households were collected and characterized. At Time 2, the households were visited at home by an officer, who used one of the four communication scripts built on the basis of the results of the psycho-environmental diagnostic. At Time 3, the garbage cans were collected and characterized again. We observe an improvement in sorting in the condition where the TBP dimensions are activated: attitude, social norm, and controllability. Our results highlight the importance of taking into account the temporality of change, especially when the behavior to be changed is complex. They also show an interest in relying on a psycho-environmental diagnosis, taking into account the context of insertion of the target behavior.
RESUMEN
Introduction: The frequency of intravenous thrombolysis (IVT) in acute ischemic stroke (AIS) is lower than it should be in several regions of the world. It is unclear what interventions can produce significant improvements in IVT utilization. We aimed to investigate the temporal trends in IVT in AIS and identify changes in time that could be associated with specific interventions. Methods: We included patients with AIS who were admitted from January 1998 to December 2019 in our institution. To analyze trends in utilization and time points in which they changed, we performed a Joinpoint regression analysis. Interventions were assigned to a specific category according to the Behavior Change Wheel framework intervention function criteria. Results: A total of 3,361 patients with AIS were admitted, among which 538 (16%) received IVT. There were 245 (45.5%) women, and the mean age and median National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS) scores were 68.5 (17.2) years and 8 (interquartile range, 4-15), respectively. Thrombolysis use significantly increased by an average annual 7.6% (95% CI, 5.1-10.2), with one Joinpoint in 2007. The annual percent changes were.45% from 1998 to 2007 and 9.57% from 2007 to 2019, concurring with the stroke code organization, the definition of door-to-needle times as an institutional performance measure quality indicator, and the extension of the therapeutic window. Conclusions: The IVT rates consistently increased due to a continuous process of protocol changes and multiple interventions. The implementation of a complex multidisciplinary intervention such as the stroke code, as well as the definition of a hospital quality control metric, were associated with a significant change in this trend.

Leaf-cutting ants of the genus Acromyrmex cause serious damage to cultivated forest areas. Some flies of the family Phoridae are known to parasitize them, and the result of this interaction can provide a promising basis for the management of these ants. This study was developed to record the parasitism and behavioral responses of Acromyrmex spp. leaf-cutting ants to parasitoid phorids in the municipality of Londrina-PR, Brazil. Visual examinations and collections of leaf-cutting ants and associated phorids were carried out between October/2019 and April/2020 in selected anthills and their trails, located on the campus of the State University of Londrina (UEL) and at the Botanical Garden of Londrina. The collected insects were preserved in 70% alcohol, for later identification of the species. The behavioral response of the ants to the parasitoids was recorded individually and collectively, following protocols cited in the literature. The frequencies of the different response behaviors exhibited by the attacked ants were compared using analysis of variance. The leaf-cutting ant species Acromyrmex coronatus and Acromyrmex crassispinus were found at the two evaluated sites. Myrmosicarius catharinensis was the only species of parasitoid phorid found, which attacked both ant species. Although the occurrence of M. catharinensis has been reported in other Brazilian states and its association with A. crassispinus recorded in Buenos Aires, Argentina, this is the first report of the occurrence of the phorid in the state of Paraná with a new association for the species A. coronatus. Under foraging action by the parasitoid, 63.5% of the ants exhibited only one behavioral response, while 36.5% showed two. Accelerated walking, attempting to "bite" the parasitoid, and adopting a 'C' posture were the most frequent behavioral responses to avoid parasitism [...].

The environmental, social and systemic interventions are not enough to reduce the transmission of coronavirus, but it is important to act on the individuals behavior, a factor that favors the transmission. The use of effective mechanisms of information, education and communication is necessary, based on health literacy in a critical way and with basic principles of behavior changes. These approaches, not usually implemented, go beyond the simple information and health education, because they should be carried out not only by health professionals but also by all the influential people in the population. The functioning of the behavior change principles and their implementation in the COVID - 19 confrontation stage are explained and some digital links on how to proceed in health literacy are shown.

BACKGROUND: Household air pollution adversely affects human health and the environment, yet more than 40% of the world still depends on solid cooking fuels. The House Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) randomized controlled trial is assessing the health effects of a liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) stove and 18-month supply of free fuel in 3,200 households in rural Guatemala, India, Peru, and Rwanda. AIMS: We conducted formative research in Guatemala to create visual messages that support the sustained, exclusive use of LPG in HAPIN intervention households. METHOD: We conducted ethnographic research, including direct observation (n = 36), in-depth (n = 18), and semistructured (n = 6) interviews, and 24 focus group discussions (n = 96) to understand participants' experience with LPG. Sixty participants were selected from a pilot study of LPG stove and 2-months of free fuel to assess the acceptability and use of LPG. Emergent themes were used to create visual messages based on observations and interviews in 40 households; messages were tested and revised in focus group discussions with 20 households. RESULTS: We identified 50 codes related to household air pollution and stoves; these were reduced into 24 themes relevant to LPG stoves, prioritizing 12 for calendars. Messages addressed fear and reluctance to use LPG; preference of wood stoves for cooking traditional foods; sustainability and accessibility of fuel; association between health outcomes and household air pollution; and the need for inspirational and aspirational messages. DISCUSSION: We created a flip chart and calendar illustrating themes to promote exclusive LPG use in HAPIN intervention households.

The recent increases in childhood obesity rate among the Hispanics living in the US is a major public health concern. To date, interventions seeking to reduce childhood obesity often target the youth or the parents; however, few engage both groups within the intervention. This systematic review explores current studies that aim to control obesity in Hispanic children through family-centered interventions and assesses the effects and outcomes of these interventions in Hispanic children (2-12 years old). Data bases (PubMed, Cochrane, and EBSCO) were used to search for articles published from 2013 to 2019 that used interventions to prevent or reduce childhood obesity in Hispanic populations. Out of the initial 110 articles, only nine articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in the analysis. The majority of the current interventions included in this systematic analysis were effective in controlling Hispanic childhood obesity. Shorter interventions (i.e. 8-36 weeks) found changes in health behaviors (e.g. sugary drink consumption, screen time) and health outcomes (e.g. health-related quality of life), but many did not see changes in anthropometric variables (e.g. body mass index [BMI], blood pressure). However, interventions measured over longer timeframes (i.e. 48-144 weeks) found some decreases in sustained behaviors (e.g. caloric intake) and anthropometric measures. There is a lack of literature pertaining to culturally relevant, family-centered interventions for Hispanic youth and their families. Future studies should use culturally tailored strategies to develop interventions specifically made for Hispanic youth and education to engage their families within the program.

Sanitary Emergency Measures (SEM) were implemented in Mexico on March 30th, 2020 requiring the suspension of non-essential activities. This action followed a Healthy Distance Sanitary action on March 23rd, 2020. The aim of both measures was to reduce community transmission of COVID-19 in Mexico by lowering the effective contact rate. Using a modification of the Kermack-McKendrick SEIR model we explore the effect of behavioral changes required to lower community transmission by introducing a time-varying contact rate, and the consequences of disease spread in a population subject to suspension of non-essential activities. Our study shows that there exists a trade-off between the proportion of the population under SEM and the average time an individual is committed to all the behavioral changes needed to achieve an effective social distancing. This trade-off generates an optimum value for the proportion of the population under strict mitigation measures, significantly below 1 in some cases, that minimizes maximum COVID-19 incidence. We study the population-level impact of three key factors: the implementation of behavior change control measures, the time horizon necessary to reduce the effective contact rate and the proportion of people under SEM in combating COVID-19. Our model is fitted to the available data. The initial phase of the epidemic, from February 17th to March 23rd, 2020, is used to estimate the contact rates, infectious periods and mortality rate using both confirmed cases (by date of symptoms initiation), and daily mortality. Data on deaths after March 23rd, 2020 is used to estimate the mortality rate after the mitigation measures are implemented. Our simulations indicate that the most likely dates for maximum incidence are between late May and early June, 2020 under a scenario of high SEM compliance and low SEM abandonment rate.

A school-based experiment was conducted in the Brazilian Amazon to examine the effects of passively received information versus active elaboration on the 'perceptions' of jaguars (Panthera onca) among students, and the effects of information communicated via illustrated book on those perceptions among student's parents. Books distributed via school decreased fathers' perceptions of social acceptance of jaguar killing, but the same books distributed via a conservation organization did not. This suggests that fathers were influenced not only by the information explicitly conveyed in the content of books, but also by the implicit message that jaguar conservation was socially supported. Elaboration alone produced more persistent effects than information alone, but some negative attitudes were reinforced. Information and elaboration combined created stronger and more enduring effects than either intervention alone. These findings are important in designing interventions for our coexistence with jaguars and other charismatic species worldwide.

Although sex drive is present in many animal species, sexual behavior is not static and, like many other behaviors, can be modified by experience. This modification relies on synaptic plasticity, a sophisticated mechanism through which neurons change how they process a given stimulus, and the neurophysiological basis of learning. This review addresses the main plastic effects of steroid sex hormones in the central nervous system (CNS) and the effects of sexual experience on the CNS, including effects on neurogenesis, intracellular signaling, gene expression, and changes in dendritic spines, as well as behavioral changes.

ABSTRACT Objective To determine intuitive eating in young adults and the effects of factors such as gender, Body Mass Index and dietary intake, and dietary adequacy on intuitive eating. Methods This cross-sectional study was conducted with students at Gazi University in Ankara (N=665; 17.6% men; 82.4% women). The questionnaire, including the general characteristics, anthropometric measurements, Intuitive Eating Scale-2, and 24-H Dietary Recall sections, were applied to all participants. For the evaluation of the diet, Nutrient Adequacy Ratio and Mean Adequacy Ratio were used. Results The mean Intuitive Eating Scale-2 score was 3.2±0.33; men's and women's scores were 3.3±0.37 and 3.2±0.32, respectively (p<0.05). According to linear regression analysis, gender, age and mean adequacy ratio had an effect on the model for the score (p<0.05). In addition, there was a negative correlation between Intuitive Eating Scale-2 scores and Body Mass Index values in women (rp=-0.095, p=0.026). Conclusion The intuitive eating scores varied according to gender, dietary adequacy and age. Intuitive eating may be effective in the formation of long-term behavioral changes, which is beneficial for the treatment of obesity. The result of this study may encourage the development of this behavior in groups (may vary according to gender), that is thought to be effective by considering the changes of intuitive eating behavior.

Melipona scutellaris Latreille, 1811 (Hymenoptera, Apidae) is a pollinator of various native and cultivated plants. Because of the expansion of agriculture and the need to ensure pest control, the use of insecticides such as fipronil (FP) has increased. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of sublethal doses of FP insecticide on M. scutellaris at different time intervals (6, 12, and 24â¯h) after exposure, via individually analyzed behavioral biomarkers (locomotor activity, behavioral change) as well as the effect of FP on different brain structures of bees (mushroom bodies, antennal cells, and optic cells), using sub-individual cell biomarkers (heterochromatin dispersion, total nuclear and heterochromatic volume). Forager bees were collected when they were returning to the nest and were exposed to three different concentrations of FP (0.40, 0.040, and 0.0040â¯ng a.i/bee) by topical application. The results revealed a reduction in the mean velocity, lethargy, motor difficulty, paralysis, and hyperexcitation in all groups of bees treated with FP. A modification of the heterochromatic dispersion pattern and changes in the total volume of the nucleus and heterochromatin were also observed in the mushroom bodies (6, 12, and 24â¯h of exposure) and antennal lobes (6 and 12â¯h) of bees exposed to 0.0040â¯ng a.i/bee (LD50/100). FP is toxic to M. scutellaris and impairs the essential functions required for the foraging activity.

INTRODUCTION: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality in Puerto Rico (PR). Although largely preventable through screening and treatment of precancerous polyps, CRC screening rates in PR remain low while CRC incidence and mortality continue to increase. METHODS: We used intervention mapping (IM), a systematic framework using theory and evidence to plan a health promotion intervention to increase colorectal cancer screening (CRCS) among Puerto Rican adults 50 years and older who are patients of Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) in PR. RESULTS: To inform the development of a logic model of the problem during the needs assessment phase, we determined the CRC incidence and mortality rates in PR using recent data from the PR Cancer Registry, conducted a literature review to better understand behavioral and environmental factors influencing CRC among Hispanics in general and in Puerto Ricans, and collected new data. We conducted seven focus groups to identify community needs and resources, specific sub-behaviors related to CRCS (performance objectives) and the determinants of CRCS. We then developed matrices of change objectives that would guide the content, behavioral change method selection, and the practical applications that would be included in the program. We selected two overarching methods: entertainment education and behavioral journalism and developed practical applications, materials, and messages containing several other methods including modeling, persuasion, information, and tailoring. We developed and pretested a Tailored Interactive Multimedia Intervention, newsletter, an action plan, and supplemental print materials for patients. We also developed a patient mediated provider prompt to increase provider recommendation and improve patient provider communication. CONCLUSION: The use of IM for systematic planning produced a detailed coherent plan for the CRCS educational intervention. Guided by IM processes, steps, and tasks, we used community level information, existing literature, theory, and new data to develop health education materials that were well received by the priority population and will likely increase CRCS among FQHC patients in PR.

OBJECTIVES: To identify the difficulties on the family relationships and at work derived from the menopause symptoms, as well as the management measures adopted. METHODS: Cross-sectional, qualitative/quantitative study attended by 30 post-menopause women. RESULTS: The menopause related experiences were heterogeneous and not necessarily negative. There was great diversity in how the respondents defined menopause and only 33.3% had been prepared to experience it, mostly by medical directions. The first symptoms occurred at 46.5 years (±5.3 years), being mentioned: the hot flashes, the gain of weight, the irritability and the pain during intercourse. There were differences between women in the number of symptoms perceived, ranging from 1 to 27 (13.4±6.3). Important behavioral changes were mentioned such as the reduction of sexual activity due to the decline of libido, the lack of patience to deal with the sons, the less motivation to work and the reduced self-esteem. In order to deal with the symptoms they adopted new diets, physical exercises or altered some values and attitudes. CONCLUSIONS: The lack of preparation can lead to difficulties to cope with climacteric syndrome, which may compromise quality of life and/or personal satisfaction.

Abstract: There are few intervention programs designed for reducing bullying in the classrooms. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of an intervention program based on the principles of applied behavior analysis to reduce bullying in the classroom. The program was designed to train elementary school teachers in the application of eight behavioral techniques (i.e., stimuli control, cost of response, reinforcing alternative responses, self-control of anger, group contingencies, task analysis, monitoring, and shaping). Eight teachers from three public schools were trained and they implemented the program during a whole school year. Those teachers had 223 students. From that total 28 were identified as bullies and 28 as victims. The bullying behavior of those 28 children as well as the disruptive behaviors of the 223 students were measured pre, during and post treatment. Results showed that the intervention program was successful in reducing bullying as well as disruptive behaviors. The program was especially effective in reducing antisocial behavior.

Captive animals suffer from stress and lack of stimulation. Environmental enrichment (EE) provides them with a series of activities that encourages them to present species-specific behaviors. The objective of this work was to analyze the effect of an EE program in the behavior of a 7-spider monkey colony. It was expected that aggression, coprophilia and stereotypes would be less frequent, while exploration and play would increase. The study was divided in two stages: one previous to EE and one while EE was being implemented. A focal sampling per behavior was undertaken in 1-h continuous recordings for a total of 40 hours per stage. We compared the frequency of each behavior with a Wilcoxon's signal test. The results showed that aggression, stereotypes and coprophilia were reduced during EE, while exploration and play increased significantly. No significant differences were found between sexes. EE reduces the problems originated by confinement; therefore, it must be considered a necessary tool to be continuously employed to make an improvement into the life conditions of confined individuals.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is a collaborative type of conversation focusedon strengthening the motivation and commitment to change. Launched in 1983, it hasundergone changes aimed at adapting to the complexity inherent to the professionalclientrelationship. From this perspective, this article was written so as to present MIsproposal and its most recent transformations. It describes its principles, strategies andtraps, and also introduces the MIs spirit idea, based on four elements, namely partnership, acceptance, evocation and compassion. The article also presents MIsbasic premises and processes, which are developed by means of engagement, focus, evocation and planning. It displays the positive evidences seen when MI is utilized in thebeginning of the treatment. In addition, its effects are quickly noticed, but yet tend todecrease after a period of 12 months, and this latter aspect is one of the reasons whyMI has undergone successive modifications. MI is currently developed as an approachthat, by means of tests and adaptations following scientific rigor, aims at stabilizingambivalence and add a humanist and constructivist vision to changes to be made to riskbehavior(AU)

Baseado no programa norte-americano "Active Living Every Day", o "VAMOS" foi traduzido e adaptado culturalmente à realidade brasileira.
Despite increased governmental efforts towards promoting healthy and active lifestyles among Brazilians, physical inactivity is a serious concern in the population. Therefore, we developed a new approach to community interventions for the promotion of physical activity called "Project VAMOS: Active Living, Enhancing Health". In this article we review information about the conception of the program, as well as name, brand, and logo development. We discuss issues related to translation and cultural adaptation, evaluation strategies, and we review lessons learned from the pilot phase of the project that involved older adults and public health centers (CS) in Florianopolis. One hundred older adults registered in six CS participated in the pilot study. They were randomly assigned into three different groups: "VAMOS" (n=33), traditional physical activity classes (n=35), and a control group (n=32). "VAMOS" is an educational program based on behavioral change principles that consists of 12 meetings. Based on an American evidence-based program ("Active Living Every Day"), "VAMOS" was translated and culturally adapted to the Brazilian context. A number of adjustments were made to the original American version of the program prior to conducting the pilot study. For example, the content of the lessons and homework were revised, we shortened the length of the lessons, as well as lowered the complexity of some of the materials. The results of the pilot study suggest that there was broad acceptance of the "VAMOS"program by the older adult participants. Also, interviews with administrative staff and health professionals working for the CS indicated a possibility and interest to continue to offer "VAMOS" as part of their regular programming for the community. In summary, "VAMOS" has great potential to be used with the Brazilian population. Adjustments are necessary for its utilization with other age groups and across different regions in Brazil.
