Introduction Voice is a crucial tool for communication, and voice problems are more likely to occur in professionals who frequently use their voice for work. Teachers, whose profession requires sustained vocal use, are particularly susceptible to occupation-related voice disorders. This study aimed to quantify the prevalence of voice disorders among teachers in Saudi Arabia, with the general population serving as a control group, and to identify associated risk factors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted utilizing an online self-administered questionnaire, which was completed by both teachers and the general population in Saudi Arabia. The latter group acted as a control. The questionnaire included sections on sociodemographic data, teaching patterns, symptoms of voice issues, and the Voice Handicap Index-10 (VHI-10) for assessing voice disorders among participants. Results The study included 640 participants, with 438 (68.4%) being teachers, the majority of whom were females (N = 406; 63.4%). The most common voice-related symptoms reported by teachers were hoarseness (N = 210; 37.9%) and dry throat (N = 147; 26.9%). Voice disorders, as determined by the VHI, affected 355 (55.5%) of the teachers. A high VHI score was associated with a diagnosis of voice disorders and GERD. There was no significant difference in the VHI scores between teachers and the general population (p > 0.05). Conclusion Teachers in Saudi Arabia exhibited a higher prevalence of voice disorders compared to the general population. Risk factors, such as smoking, longer teaching experience, and more teaching hours per week, were more common among teachers with voice disorders. Further investigative studies are warranted to elucidate the causal relationships between these variables and voice disorders.

Background Voice disorders (VD) pose significant challenges for teachers as they impact their professional and personal lives. Teaching requires extensive use of the voice, making teachers particularly susceptible to vocal health issues. VD can hinder the quality of education. Objectives This study aimed to comprehensively explore the prevalence, associated factors, and impact of VD among teachers and their health-seeking behavior regarding VD. Methodology A cross-sectional observational study was conducted in Taif City, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA), between November and December 2023. The data were collected through a questionnaire covering demographic variables, occupational factors, voice-related symptoms, associated health conditions, and the impact of VD. The statistical analysis was performed using SPSS Statistics version 26 (IBM Corp. Released 2019. IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0. Armonk, NY: IBM Corp.), and chi-squared tests were used to assess associations. Results The study involved 568 teachers, 61.8% of whom had VD. The study identified significant associations between VD and demographic characteristics, habits, and teaching-related variables. Age, gender, teaching subject, class size, and weekly teaching load were associated with the prevalence of VD. Hoarseness, throat pain, and throat dryness were prevalent symptoms among teachers with VD. The impact of VD on teachers was evident, with a considerable proportion reporting work absenteeism (28.7%) and even contemplating retirement due to voice problems (6.3%). Conclusion This study offers a nuanced understanding of VD among teachers in the Taif region, emphasizing the complex interplay of demographic, symptomatic, and behavioral factors. The findings underscore the need for targeted interventions, including awareness campaigns, preventive strategies, and streamlined healthcare access, to address the unique challenges that different subgroups of teachers face. Future research should further explore longitudinal trajectories and objective measures to enhance our understanding of VD in educational settings.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: This study assessed the vocal health of performers returning to full-time performance after the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown and investigated how differences in voice usage, exposure to voice care professionals, and vocal pathology before and during the pandemic contributed to variability in self-perceived and instrumental vocal outcome measures. STUDY DESIGN: This was a prospective, case-control observational study conducted at a single outpatient site. METHODS: Twenty-two patients, 11 cases and 11 controls, were enrolled for the study. All participants were full-time singing professionals prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Cases were recruited from patients presenting to a tertiary care voice center for vocal or pharyngeal complaints. Controls were healthy volunteers recruited from the general population of professional singers in the surrounding metropolitan area. All participants provided responses to the Voice Handicap Index-10, Evaluation of Ability to Sing Easily, and Laryngopharyngeal Measure of Perceived Sensation validated questionnaires as well as a study survey with questions regarding vocal use and history prior to and during the pandemic. All participants underwent instrumental acoustic and videostroboscopic voice evaluations. RESULTS: Cases had poorer outcome measures overall and were more likely to report their voices were worse at study enrollment when compared to their prepandemic perception (P = 0.027). Cases tended to be older and less likely to have pursued alternative employment during the pandemic that involved increased speaking voice use (27% vs 55%), but these differences were not statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS: There was a variable response among performers to the prolonged hiatus from performing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Those with poorer outcomes tended to be older and may have used their voice less during the pandemic. These findings are consistent with detraining periods in the exercise physiology literature and support the construct of treating vocal performers as vocal athletes.

OBJECTIVES: Social media plays an ever-growing part in modern life and is a frequent source of health information for patients. Singers are particularly likely to receive health information solely from fellow musicians and may experience barriers to seeking vocal healthcare. However, there have been no studies to date evaluating vocal health information on social media. Our study aimed to assess the quality, reliability, and accuracy of vocal health content on TikTok. STUDY DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis. METHODS: Three searches were carried out on Tiktok, using the terms "vocal health," "vocal injury," and "voice tips." The top 50 videos in each category were cataloged for extraction of data and for analysis on three discrete scales. Two independent reviewers rated each video using the Global Quality Scale (GQS), modified DISCERN scale, and Accuracy in Digital-health Instrument (ANDI). RESULTS: After the removal of duplicates and unavailable content, 146 videos were analyzed. The mean (range) length was 59.8 seconds (5-239), and number of views per video was 886,265 (432-36,700,000). The vast majority of videos (94.5%) were created by non-clinicians; only two videos (1.37%) were posted by otolaryngologists. The mean (SD) GQS score was 2.34 (0.75) out of a maximum of five, the DISCERN score was 0.97 (0.56) out of five, and the ANDI score was 2.85 (0.87) out of four. Video length was positively correlated with GQS and DISCERN scores, but views, likes, and shares were either not associated or negatively associated with GQS, DISCERN, and ANDI. CONCLUSIONS: Most videos were of low quality and reliability and moderate accuracy. Measures of popularity were either uncorrelated or negatively correlated with quality, reliability, and accuracy, suggesting that TikTok users are more likely to engage with lower-quality content online. This implies a potential role for vocal health professionals to fill a crucial gap with reliable information on social media.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the readability and quality of Internet information related to vocal health, voice disorders and voice therapy. STUDY DESIGN: This is a cross-sectional study. METHODS: Eighty-two websites were included. Websites were then analyzed; their origin (clinic/hospital, non-profit, government), quality (Health On the Net [HON] certification and DISCERN scores) and readability (Atesman readability formula and Bezirci-Yilmaz new readability formula) were assessed. Statistical analysis was used to examine differences between website origin and quality and readability scores and correlations between readability instruments. RESULTS: Of the 82 websites, 93% were of private clinic/hospital, 6% were of non-profit organisation and 1% were of government. None of the 82 websites were HON certification, and the mean score of the item determining the general quality measure in DISCERN was 1.83 in a five-point scale. The mean of Atesman readability formula value was calculated as 50.46 (±8.16). This value is defined as 'moderately hard' according to the readability scale. The average of Bezirci-Yilmaz new readability formula value is 13.85 (±3.48). This value is defined as 13th and 14th grade. CONCLUSIONS: The quality of Internet-based health information about the voice is generally inadequate, and the sites examined in this study may be limited due to high readability levels. This may be a problem in people with poor literacy skills. For this reason, it is very important for speech and language therapists and other health professionals to evaluate and monitor the quality and readability of Internet-based information.

OBJECTIVES: This systematic review aims to explore the effectiveness of voice health education interventions among singers, particularly focusing on vocal hygiene treatment programs tailored for professional voice users. STUDY DESIGN: Systematic review. METHODS: Preferred Reporting Items on Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analysis guidelines were followed to conduct this systematic review. Comprehensive searches were conducted in PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and Cochrane Library databases. Four articles were selected for detailed review. The studies were evaluated using the Effective Public Health Practice Project tool for quality assessment. RESULTS: The four reviewed studies primarily utilized the pretest-posttest design to examine the effectiveness of vocal hygiene interventions on singers' vocal health. Two studies investigated the effect of hydration as a treatment method, while the remaining two focused on vocal hygiene instruction. Significant improvements were observed in various vocal health parameters, including maximum phonation time, intensity, Dysphonia Severity Index, and number of daily vocal breaks taken. CONCLUSION: This systematic review provides valuable insights into the efficacy of vocal hygiene treatment programs for singers. The positive outcomes observed in the reviewed studies underscore the importance of voice health education tailored to singers' specific needs. However, the limited number of eligible studies and the common limitation of small sample sizes highlight the need for further research in this area. Vocal health practitioners, educators, and researchers can utilize the findings of this review to develop evidence-based vocal hygiene interventions that promote the well-being and longevity of singers' vocal performance careers.

Background & Objectives: VH (Vocal health) is the need of the hour. VH of parents of children with hearing assistive devices (HAD) reveals a literature gap, during the habilitation process of their children. To explore the vocal health of parents of children with hearing assistive devices. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted at Riphah International University from September to December 2021. Study recruited N=384 parents of Hearing Impaired children (HIC) using HAD for at least two years, of both genders and aged 2-9 years using convenience sampling. Voice-related quality of life (V-RQOL), and vocal health Index (VHI) -10 were used for data collection. Data was analyzed on SPSS Version 25. Descriptive statistics, Anova and t-test were utilized to see difference between means of groups. P<0.05 shows significant-results. Results: Parents of children using hearing assistive devices had excellent V-RQOL score in 350(91.14%) parents. There was no significant difference in V=RQOL as regards type of hearing assistive device use (p=0.102), laterality of device use (p=0.918) and degree of hearing loss (p=0.143). However, type of hearing loss revealed significant difference (p=0.021). Also VHI score revealed significantly (p=0.008) lower means in parents of children with cochlear implants. Conclusion: Current study concludes that the parents raising hearing impaired children with hearing assistive devices, possess good vocal health as determined by VHI and V-RQOL scores with only a very small number of parents reporting vocal symptoms.

OBJECTIVE: Vocal health and hygiene are well addressed for professional singers, but less attention has been paid to singing trainees/students whose vocal demands vary significantly from trained singers. Studies conducted in the literature on singing trainees have reported a higher prevalence of voice problems in them; however, no such information is available from Indian classical singing trainees. Hence, the present study explored the frequency and nature of voice problems, self-reported vocal health and awareness of vocal hygiene and its practices in Carnatic singing trainees. METHOD: This cross-sectional study was conducted using a purposive sampling method. The data were gathered from 135 Carnatic classical singing trainees. The participants completed a self-reported questionnaire addressing demographic and singing-related details, vocal symptoms, variables associated with increased risk reporting voice problems and knowledge about factors influencing vocal health. RESULTS: The experience of past and point prevalence of voice problems in Carnatic singing students were found to be 29% and 15%, respectively. Difficulty singing higher notes, hoarseness, tired voice, loss of ability to sing/speak loudly, and breathiness in higher pitch range were the most prevalent vocal symptom reported by Carnatic singing trainees. Nasal allergies, dry mouth/throat, and excessive stress in daily routine activities raising voice many times a day, dry mouth/throat and excessive talking in social situations was found to have a significant association with singing trainees reporting voice problems. However, availing medical assistance for voice problems was found to be poor in this group of singing students. CONCLUSION: Similar to trainees of other form of singing, Carnatic singing trainees also found to have a higher frequency of voice problems. Most of the singing trainees were found to be in their adolescent age period, and they face instability in their voice and are more vulnerable to develop voice problems. This indicates the need for in-depth understanding of voice problems experienced by Carnatic singing trainees aiming to promote their vocal health and prevent injury and be successful in their singing career.

Objetivo: Evaluar si la hidratación combinada (sistémico y superficial) disminuye síntomas vocales y mejora la eficiencia glótica en una muestra de estudiantes de Logopedia. Material y Métodos: Estudio cuasi-experimental con grupo Hidratación (N=20) y grupo Control (N=19) con valoración pre y post-hidratación (ingesta de agua 1.500 ml/día e inhalaciones dos veces/día durante una semana). Se analizaron factores deshidratantes relacionados con la voz (uso vocal, tabaco, alcohol, café, respiración bucal), síntomas vocales y eficiencia glótica a través del Tiempo Máximo Fonación, Fo, Jitter % y Shimmer %, usando Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP). Resultados: Grupo Hidratación disminuyó significativamente sequedad (p = 0,013), carraspeo (p = 0,005), fatiga vocal (p = 0,015), dolor faríngeo (p = 0,009), Shimmer % (p = 0,048) frente al grupo Control que sólo disminuyó el carraspeo (p = 0,02). Objective: To evaluate if a combined hydration (systemic and superficial) decreases the vocal symptoms and improves the glottic efficiency in a sample of university students of Speech therapist. Material and Methods: Quasi-experimental study with Hydration group (N=20) and Control group (N=19) with pre and post-hydration assessment (water intake 1.500 ml/day and steam twice/day for a week). Voice-related dehydrating factors (vocal use, tobacco, alcohol, coffee, oral breathing), vocal symptoms and glottic efficiency through Maximum Phonation Time, Fo, Jitter % and Shimmer %, using Multi-Dimensional Voice Program (MDVP) were analyzed. Results: Hydration group significantly decreased dryness (p = .013=, throat clearing (p = .005), vocal fatigue (p = .015), pain throat (p = .009) and Shimmer % (p = .048) compared to the Control group, which only decreased throat clearing (p = .02). Discussion: The combined hydration may be a useful measure to improve vocal health for future speech-language-pathologists. (AU)

BACKGROUND: Many amateur singers enjoy singing in choirs. They are likely to lack the training and expertise of professional singers and this may have an impact on their vocal health. AIMS: To assess the experiences of amateur singers, their use of warm-up and cool-down sessions, their vocal health, their sources of help and advice and their reactions to receiving a diagnosis and treatment. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: A questionnaire was sent to amateur choir singers. Quantitative data on their use of warm-up and cool-down activities were collected and the singers rated how frequently they experienced adverse voice symptoms after singing. Qualitative data were collected from singers who had sought advice about their voice and from those who had received a diagnosis and treatment. OUTCOME AND RESULTS: Most choirs used warm-up sessions but few used cool-down. Singers who participated in choir warm-ups experienced significantly less vocal symptoms. Individual warm-ups were ineffective. Singers who had previously had a diagnosis continued to have significantly higher symptom scores. A quarter of the singers who had neither sought help nor had a diagnosis had high scores. Singers appeared uncertain about who to consult for help. Those who saw a speech and language therapist were much more likely to receive a diagnosis and treatment either by the therapist or by referral to an ear, nose and throat specialist. Those receiving treatment were mainly positive about it and likely to complete a course of therapy. CONCLUSIONS AND IMPLICATIONS: Warm-up sessions performed by choirs are helpful in avoiding voice symptoms and are recommended. The presence of singers who are unaware of potential damage to their voices is a concern. A simple rating system, as used in this research, may act to alert them to the dangers. Choir leaders could be more active in advising singers and refer them to professionals where necessary. Speech and language therapists appear more sensitive to their problems and could be a first point of contact. WHAT THIS PAPER ADDS: What is already known on this subject Poor vocal health may occur in amateur singers and lead to voice disorders which will reduce the demonstrated benefits of regular singing. They may be less aware than professional singers of potential hazards and may not know how to sing in a way that ensures good vocal health. There has been less research on the extent of voice problems in amateurs or of the actions they may take to resolve the vocal difficulties they encounter. What this paper adds to the existing knowledge This survey demonstrates that choir warm-ups were effective in helping to avoid common symptoms associated with voice problems. A large minority of singers who had not sought help for voice problems had high symptom scores on our assessment. Singers frequently turned to a singing teacher for help. Those who consulted a speech and language therapist were much more likely to be referred for further investigation and treatment. What are the potential or actual clinical implications of this work? We present a simple subjective measure of symptom severity which succeeds in distinguishing between singers who warm up their voices and those who do not and between singers who have received a past diagnosis and those who have not. There are a number of indications in this research that amateur singers are unsure if they need help and are uncertain who can offer it. In these circumstances the use of a simple measure of the severity of vocal abuse may be useful.

OBJECTIVES: Voice care services aim to provide effective and meaningful voice care. Current practice guidance recommends a multidisciplinary voice care approach, supported by the evidence-base and practitioner experience. However, unlike other areas of physical and mental health, current voice care guidance does not explicitly include the voices of experts-by-experience, meaning those who have lived experience of voice difficulties. The perspectives of those working within nonclinical voice professions, such as vocal coaches, are also often omitted. There is therefore a need for updated practice guidance which prioritizes expert-by-experience and nonclinical perspectives. METHODS: Vocal Health Education hosted a consensus meeting in London, UK. The meeting was coproduced with experts-by-experience, and attendees included those with lived experience of voice difficulties and practitioners across a range of disciplines within voice care. The content of the meeting was synthesized into themes and associated recommendations were drafted and agreed to by all attendees. RESULTS: The consensus statement offers practical advice to those working in voice care. Recommendations are offered for multidisciplinary and biopsychosocial voice care, with a focus on person-centered practice and the valuing of lived experience. Through discussion, consensus was reached regarding recommendations for voice care assessment and treatment, practitioner approach, psychosocial considerations, and service design. The need for greater expert-by-experience involvement, coproduction, and co-construction was emphasized throughout. CONCLUSIONS: This report emphasizes the voices of those with lived experience. It highlights ways of updating or improving current care, with the aim of informing clinical practice as well as research and service development. The consensus statement is the first in voice care to include experts-by-experience at the center of its recommendations, underlining the need for more coproduced and co-constructed research and practice within voice healthcare.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of a Workplace Vocal Health Promotion Program (WVHPP) and working conditions on voice functioning of college professors. STUDY DESIGN: This is a pre-post intervention study. METHODS: College professors were randomly assigned in a control group or an intervention group. Participants filled out a questionnaire and recorded a voice sample at baseline and at the end of the follow-up. This program contains four sessions (2 face-to-face and 2 virtual sessions; one per week) focused on voice hygiene, vocal training, and strategies to modify teaching-learning process. RESULTS: The Intervention group (n = 15) showed increased scores in V-RQOL in comparison with the control group (n = 14), but the effect was not statistically significant. After the program, shimmer decreased (P = 0.05), whereas MPT and HNR increased (P = 0.02 and 0.04 respectively) among professors in the intervention group after the implementation of the WVHPP. Concerning working conditions, number of students per class was statistically associated with SPL. MPT was statistically associated with age and good acoustics inside the classroom. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that implementation of a WVHPP, as well as working conditions, influence voice functioning measured by means of instrumental voice measures and voice-related quality of life. Therefore, workplace promotion programs may be good approaches to decrease the high prevalence of voice disorders among professors.

BACKGROUND: Teachers suffer greater impacts of voice problems due inappropriate voice use and other contributing factors such as physiological, environmental, and individual & work related issues. Structured vocal hygiene programs (VHP) prevent/reduce the risk of vocal trauma and promote vocal health in teachers. This study aimed to estimate the outcome of instituting a sociocultural relevant vocal hygiene program in facilitating vocal health among female school teachers using a comprehensive voice assessment protocol. METHOD: VHP was developed emphasizing adequate hydration, healthy vocal diet, posture and alignment, vocal practices while teaching, and ideal speaking environment. This was administered via a face to face session to seventeen female teachers with voice concerns. All underwent a comprehensive voice assessment (subjective, objective, and self-perceptual vocal measures) before and four weeks after the VHP. Inter-rater reliability for perceptual and visual examination was estimated using Intra-Class Coefficient. Wilcoxon signed ranks test was used to compare the pre- and post-treatment measures of continuous variables (acoustic, Maximum phonation time, s/z ratio, Vocal Fatigue Index [VFI] & Voice Disorder Outcome Profile [V-DOP]), and McNemar test was used for categorical variables (vocal health questionnaire, visual examination of larynx and perceptual evaluation of voice). RESULTS: Teachers reported reduction of unhealthy vocal & nonvocal practices after VHP. Improvements in vocal and related symptoms such as sensation of heart burn (P = 0.031), discomfort around the throat (P = 0.008), inadequate breath control while speaking (P = 0.016) were noticed. Perceptually, minimal improvement was seen in voice quality (overall grade). However, MPT & s/z ratio showed no significant difference. Improvement was observed in frequency range (P = 0.004), low I0 (P = 0.044), shimmer (P = 0.017), and DSI (P = 0.013). Changes were evident in all parameters of stroboscopic evaluation (except nonvibratory portion & ventricular fold hyper-adduction). V-DOP scores indicated positive change in the overall severity (P = 0.002), physical (P = 0.003) and functional domain (P = 0.034). VFI indicated improvement in teachers voice after a period of voice rest (P = 0.048). CONCLUSION: Though VHP facilitated in improving the teachers' awareness of at risk phono-traumatic behaviors and vocal health, its efficiency was limited in producing physiological improvement in teachers' voice. The comparison of vocal metrics before & after the treatment provides information on changes that can be expected in teachers after guiding them through a systematic VHP.

Background@#The lip trill is a semi-occluded vocal tract exercise found to have positive outcomes on vocal parameters of healthy individuals after a single session. However, the effect of several lip trill sessions has not been studied.@*Objective@#This study investigated the effect of a 3- to 4-week lip trill exercise program on Maximum Phonation Time (MPT), Maximum Phonation Frequency Range (MPFR), Harmonics-to-Noise Ratio (HNR), and mean Speaking Fundamental Frequency (mean SFF).@*Methods@#Three vocally untrained healthy females with perceptually normal voices participated in a multiple-baseline, single-case experimental research. Five to seven direct training sessions were randomly assigned. Self-implementation was encouraged thereafter. Participants were assessed on all outcome measures for 15 sessions. Data were visualized and inspected. Cohen’s d was also derived using Standardized Mean Difference for single-subject research.@*Results@#Visual and statistical analyses revealed a decreased MPT when training was introduced, increased MPFR variability during the training phase, and increased stability in mean SFF post-training. Perceived effects include vocal freedom, decreased laryngeal stress, and vocal conditioning. Vocal outcomes in one participant yielded a significant effect on MPFR and mean SFF and a small effect on HNR.@*Conclusion@#There is evidence of lip trill effect on pitch control and vocal conditioning. Findings also revealed that motivation, exercise frequency, and adherence could contribute to positive gains in vocally healthy speakers. Further investigation in consideration of the study findings and limitations is warranted.

The vocal folds experience repeated collision during phonation. The resulting contact pressure is often considered to play an important role in vocal fold injury, and has been the focus of many experimental studies. In this study, vocal fold contact pattern and contact pressure during phonation were numerically investigated. The results show that vocal fold contact in general occurs within a horizontal strip on the medial surface, first appearing at the inferior medial surface and propagating upward. Because of the localized and travelling nature of vocal fold contact, sensors of a finite size may significantly underestimate the peak vocal fold contact pressure, particularly for vocal folds of low transverse stiffness. This underestimation also makes it difficult to identify the contact pressure peak in the intraglottal pressure waveform. These results showed that the vocal fold contact pressure reported in previous experimental studies may have significantly underestimated the actual values. It is recommended that contact pressure sensors with a diameter no greater than 0.4 mm are used in future experiments to ensure adequate accuracy in measuring the peak vocal fold contact pressure during phonation.

PURPOSE: To assess the effectiveness of voice disorder prevention programs and to verify the effectiveness of direct and indirect voice training on the Voice Handicap Index (VHI), Voice-Related Quality of Life (V-RQOL), maximum phonation time (MPT), fundamental frequency and shimmer, for the prevention of voice disorders in regular-school teachers. METHODS: This is a literature review with meta-analysis, carried out through an electronic search in PubMed, Cochrane Central, Embase, Web of Science, Scopus and BVS, and Google Scholar, as well as ClinicalTrials.gov databases for gray literature. SELECTION CRITERIA: Randomized clinical trials and quasi-experimental studies were selected. The population consisted of regular schoolteachers, adults, with no vocal complaints submitted to a vocal health education and prevention program of voice disorders classified as direct (direct vocal tract training) and indirect (vocal hygiene guidelines that influence voice production). The outcomes vocal self-assessment: fundamental frequency, aerodynamic measurements (maximum phonation time), acoustic measures (shimmer) was analyzed in comparison with other vocal interventions or no vocal intervention. DATA ANALYSIS: Studies were independently assessed using the Cochrane Risk of bias and ROBINS-I tools. Effect sizes were calculated only at post-treatment. GRADE criteria were used to assess the quality of evidence. RESULTS: Twenty-six studies were included but, only 12 studies were included in the meta-analysis and investigated for direct and/or indirect intervention compared to no intervention. No studies were judged to be at low risk of bias, and the quality of evidence was considered high only for the Voice Handicap Index. No evidence was found that suggested effectiveness of direct and indirect voice training for any of the outcomes: VHI -1.87 (95% CI -7.03, 3.30), maximum phonation time -1.11 (95% CI -3.40, 1.17), fundamental frequency 0.87 (-1.06, 2.79) and shimmer 0, 28 (-1.50, 2.05). CONCLUSION: Results of this study were not considered significant to conclude on the effectiveness of voice training for preventing dysphonia in teachers.

BACKGROUND: Work-system participation and factors are associated with occupational vocal health for vocally reliant workers, such as sports coaches. However, there is limited use of systems approaches and worker collaboration to address occupational voice. OBJECTIVE: The current research aimed to cooperatively consider coaches' vocally reliant systems participation, including addressing vocal ergonomic factors that can create barriers for occupational vocal health and voice use. METHODS: Collaborative action inquiries explored vocal ergonomics with coaches (n = 24) from nine professional basketball teams. Across three basketball seasons, coaches and a subject matter expert identified what influenced coaches' voices and trialed approaches to optimize vocally reliant coaching participation. Nine action inquiry methods were used, including search conferences, ergonomic approaches to enhance systems participation, and focus groups. Multi-level analyses were also undertaken. RESULTS: Participants cooperatively generated, implemented, and evaluated different strategies. A cumulative total of 57 strategies were explored within teams (team mean = 6.33, SD = 3, range = 4-14). Cross-case analysis identified 25 different strategy types. Overall, participants appraised 31.58% (18/57) strategies as supportive (i.e., enhanced facilitators for voice), 61.40% (35/57) strategies as somewhat supportive (i.e., some enhanced facilitators and some ongoing barriers), and 7.02% (4/57) strategies as unsupportive (i.e., pervasive ongoing barriers not mitigated by strategies). Further, factors across coaches' work-systems continued to influence coaches' voices in dynamic and complex ways. CONCLUSIONS: Collaboration with coaches enriched vocal ergonomic approaches by providing novel, context-anchored insights. Collaboration should form 'part' of broader mechanisms to support coaches' voice use and vocal health at work.

PURPOSE: Voice injuries are well-documented in the literature and can be found in any person regardless of their profession. However, performing artists need a healthy voice in order to do their job properly. In educational environments, students with injuries are presented with the unique challenge of recovery in addition to a heavy course load. This study seeks to understand and question the experience of the undergraduate vocally injured performing arts student. METHOD: An IRB approved, online survey was created to assess vocally injured undergraduate students' experiences and was shared via social media and email outreach. RESULTS: The results of this study show clear ways that undergraduate faculty can support their injured students while they are in training. Additional findings include the importance of the voice teacher/student relationship, timing of diagnoses, and the overall faculty dynamic. Future research may benefit from investigating the voice teacher/student relationship and the mental health repercussions of vocally injured performing arts students. CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, this study found that vocally injured students have diverse experiences while in undergraduate training programs.

(1) Objective: Teaching is a particularly voice-demanding occupation. Voice training provided during teachers' education is often insufficient and thus teachers are at risk of developing voice disorders. Vocal demands during teaching are not only characterized by speaking for long durations but also by speaking in noisy environments. This provokes the so-called Lombard effect, which intuitively leads to an increase in voice intensity, pitch and phonation time in laboratory studies. However, this effect has not been thoroughly investigated in realistic teaching scenarios. (2) Methods: This study thus examined how 13 experienced, but vocally untrained, teachers behaved when reading in a noisy compared to quiet background environment. The quiet and noisy conditions were provided by a live audience either listening quietly or making noise by talking to each other. By using a portable voice accumulator, the fundamental frequency, sound pressure level of the voice and the noise as well as the phonation time were recorded in both conditions. (3) Results: The results showed that the teachers mainly responded according to the Lombard effect. In addition, analysis of phonation time revealed that they failed to increase inhalation time and appeared to lose articulation through the shortening of voiceless consonants in the noisy condition. (4) Conclusions: The teachers demonstrated vocally demanding behavior when speaking in the noisy condition, which can lead to vocal fatigue and cause dysphonia. The findings underline the necessity for specific voice training in teachers' education, and the content of such training is discussed in light of the results.

BACKGROUND: Rough vocal effects, extreme, or extended vocal techniques to sound intentionally hoarse or rough are an integral part of many genres and styles, and research has recently demonstrated the involvement of supraglottic narrowing and vibrations to produce such sounds. The vocal health of singing with rough vocal effects is poorly documented, especially in a longitudinal manner, while much vocal pedagogy continuously treats the sounds as harming to or dangerous for the vocal mechanism. OBJECTIVE: To longitudinally investigate the vocal health of professional singers who perform the five rough-sounding vocal effects Distortion, Growl, Grunt, Rattle, and Creaking as part of their singing and teaching. METHODS: Twenty singers underwent nasoendoscopic examination, filled in SVHI questionnaires, and were assessed by GRBAS with a 14-year interval in a retrospective longitudinal study (from 2007 to 2021). Endoscopic materials were assessed by Reflux Finding Score and a hybrid version of the Stroboscopy Rating Scale. RESULTS: Singers presented at initiation of study with an average SVHI of 9.2 (±9), which decreased at time of follow up 14 years later to an average of 5.12 (±6). Laryngeal assessments (RFS and SRS) revealed low averages at initiation of study as well as at conclusion of the study with only small fluctuations in averages, with findings mainly relating to arytenoid asymmetry. CONCLUSION: The participating singers perform and teach rough vocal effects continually and present with healthy laryngeal mechanisms and within-normal SVHI and GRBAS scores. The findings suggest that controlled supraglottic narrowing and techniques to allow for supraglottic structures to engage in vibration as an additional noise source can be performed sustainable and in a healthy manner if performed with correct vocal technique.
