RESUMEN

Prenatal exposure to organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) has been linked with adverse effects on reproductive health, and new OPFRs are continually emerging. In this study, emerging OPFRs, such as bis(2-ethylhexyl) phenyl phosphate (BEHPP), triamyl phosphate (TAP), tris(4-tert-butylphenyl) phosphate (T4tBPPP), oxydi-2,1-ethanediyl phosphoric acid tetrakis(2 chloro-1-methylethyl) ester (RDT905), cresyl diphenyl phosphate (CDP), and 2-isopropylphenyl diphenyl phosphate (2IPPDPP), were detected in 84 %, 100 %, 100 %, 52 %, 40 %, and 40 % of 25 decidua samples with average concentrations of 2.36, 6.21, 1.5, 2.6, 1.07, and 0.09 ng/g of dry weight (dw), respectively. Six of the aforementioned emerging OPFRs (BEHPP, T4tBPPP, RDT905, 2IPPDPP, CDP, and TAP) were simultaneously detected in paired chorionic villus samples, and their average concentrations were 11.3, 1.77, 3.64, 0.11, 0.58, and 3.34 ng/g, which were significantly higher than and positively correlated with those in decidua samples. The geometric mean concentration ratios between chorionic villus and decidua samples for BEHPP, T4tBPPP, RDT905, 2IPPDPP, CDP, and TAP were 4.02, 1.61, 1.73, 1.48, 0.82, and 0.69, respectively, consistent with transthyretin binding-dependent behavior. Prenatal exposure to such emerging OPFRs, especially for BEHPP with relatively high concentration and maternal transfer, is of high concern from the view of women's reproductive health.

Reduced piglet feed intake immediately postweaning (pw) leads to disruption of small intestine structure and function and reduced growth. Our objective was to evaluate the effect of providing supplemental milk or liquid starter diet for either 4 or 11 days pw, on intestinal parameters of newly weaned piglets and growth to slaughter. At weaning (28 ± 0.6 days old), five hundred and eighty-seven piglets ((Large White × Landrace) × Duroc) were divided into 59 pen groups, each containing 9-10 same sex (entire male or female) piglets. The pen groups were blocked by sex and weaning weight and provided with ad-libitum access to one of five dietary treatments: (1) Dry pelleted starter diet (control; CON); (2) CON+liquid milk replacer for 4 days pw (M4); (3) CON+liquid milk replacer for 11 days pw (M11); (4) CON+liquid starter diet for 4 days pw (S4) and (5) CON+liquid starter diet for 11 days pw (S11). Pen groups were weighed at weaning, days 11, 20, 28, and 47 pw and at target sale weight. Feed disappearance (on a DM basis) was recorded on each weighing day. On day 7 pw, 10 piglets per treatment were euthanised to collect small intestine tissue samples for determination of villus height (VH), crypt depth and brush-border membrane enzyme activity. Data were analysed using SAS-version 9.4. Between days 0 and 11 pw, M11 increased average daily feed intake by 48% and average daily gain (ADG) by 57% compared to CON (P < 0.05), and increased ADG by 54% (P < 0.05) compared to S4. Piglets on M11 also had improved feed conversion efficiency compared with CON piglets between days 0 and 11 pw. Treatment did not affect growth performance after day 28 pw, or carcass parameters at slaughter. At day 7 pw, M11 piglets had 37% higher jejunal VH than CON piglets (P < 0.05) and S11 piglets had 28% higher ileal VH than S4 piglets (P < 0.05). M11 piglets had up to 150% higher ileal sucrase activity than M4, S4 and S11 piglets (P < 0.05) and 180% higher ileal maltase activity than S4 piglets (P < 0.05). In conclusion, M11 reduced the immediate negative effects of weaning, as it was associated with increased feed intake, growth, brush-border membrane enzyme activity and improved intestinal structure early pw. However, there were no carryover effects of any of the liquid supplements on growth or feed efficiency or carcass weight at slaughter.

INTRODUCTION: Diabetes mellitus leads to maldevelopment of the villous morphology in the human placenta, disrupting the exchange of materials between the maternal and fetal compartments, consequently compromising fetal development. This study aims to explore how different types of diabetes mellitus affect human placental villous geometric morphology including branching numbers and sizes (length, diameter). METHODS: Here an optical coherence tomography (OCT)-based 3D imaging platform was utilized to capture 3D images of placental villi from different types of diabetes, including type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). RESULTS: Different types of diabetes mellitus exhibit different effects on human placental villous geometric morphological parameters: GDM had greater placenta villous parameters at intermediate villous diameter (IVD), terminal villous diameter (TVD), terminal villous length (TVL) compared to the healthy, T1DM, and T2DM, and these differences were statistically significant. The TVD of T1DM and T2DM had significantly greater sizes than the healthy. There was no statistically significant difference in the number of villous branches among the three types of diabetes, but T1DM and GDM had more villous branches than healthy individuals. DISCUSSION: Diabetes mellitus affects the geometric morphology of human placental villi, with varying effects observed in pregnancies of different diabetes types. These findings offer a novel avenue for exploring underlying pathophysiological mechanisms and enhancing the management of women with diabetes from preconception through pregnancy.

Human trophoblast stem (TS) cells are an informative in vitro model for the generation and testing of biologically meaningful hypotheses. The goal of this project was to derive patient-specific TS cell lines from clinically available chorionic villus sampling biopsies. Cell outgrowths were captured from human chorionic villus tissue specimens cultured in modified human TS cell medium. Cell colonies emerged early during the culture and cell lines were established and passaged for several generations. Karyotypes of the newly established chorionic villus-derived trophoblast stem (TS CV ) cell lines were determined and compared to initial genetic diagnoses from freshly isolated chorionic villi. Phenotypes of TSCV cells in the stem state and following differentiation were compared to cytotrophoblast-derived TS (TS CT ) cells. TSCV and TSCT cells uniformly exhibited similarities in the stem state and following differentiation into syncytiotrophoblast and extravillous trophoblast cells. Chorionic villus tissue specimens provide a valuable source for TS cell derivation. They expand the genetic diversity of available TS cells and are associated with defined clinical outcomes. TSCV cell lines provide a new set of experimental tools for investigating trophoblast cell lineage development.

Public interest in the cannabis plant has increased after its legalization in many countries. Cannabis sativa residues (CR) are a part of the plant waste in the cannabis industry. The CR contain medicinal properties that could be used as a feed additive in poultry production. The trial was conducted to investigate the effects of CR on growth performance, carcass characteristics, intestinal morphology, and blood biochemistry profile of broiler chickens. In a completely randomized design, 256 one-day-old male Ross 308 broilers were randomly allocated to 4 treatments with 8 replicates and 8 birds per replicate. These 4 dietary treatments included a basal diet with 0, 0.5, 1 and 2% CR for 40 d. The results showed that 2% CR supplementation reduced feed intake (FI) in the starter phase (d 3-23, P < 0.05). The birds in the CR groups had lower FI in the finishing phase (d 24-40, P < 0.01) and the whole raising period (d 3-40, P < 0.01) than the control. However, the body weight and carcass yield were not different (P > 0.05). In addition, the CR diet had no adverse effects on the blood biochemistry profile, including total cholesterol, triglycerides, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, alkaline phosphatase, total protein, globulin, albumin, and direct bilirubin (P > 0.05). In addition, total bilirubin and malondialdehyde were better in the plasma of CR-supplemented birds than in the control groups (P < 0.05). The observations on intestinal morphology showed that CR supplementation improved the ratio between villus height and crypt depth in the ileum (P < 0.05). In conclusion, CR supplementation can improve intestinal morphology and oxidative stability of broiler chickens. This suggests that CR could potentially be used as an alternative feed additive in broiler production.

The gut microbiota plays a key role in constructing the microvascular network in the intestinal villus, depending on the Paneth cells, strategically positioned to coordinate the development of both the microbiota and the microvasculature. The gut microbiota secretes several molecules and chemokines involved in the induction of the secretion of pro-angiogenic factors.

BACKGROUND: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) compared to tenofovir alafenamide (TAF) leads to lower body weight and plasma lipids by an unknown mechanism. We hypothesize that TDF, when absorbed, may damage enterocytes of the proximal duodenum, leading to reduced absorption of nutrients. METHODS: People living with HIV, without significant gastrointestinal symptoms, receiving TDF (n=12) or TAF (n=12) containing regimen underwent esophagogastroduodenoscopies with duodenal biopsies. Plasma/serum concentrations of nutrients absorbed from proximal duodenum and serum intestinal fatty-acid-binding protein (I-FABP), a marker of enterocyte damage, were measured. COX/SDH histochemical staining and electron microscopy (EM) were conducted to evaluate mitochondria. RESULTS: Five patients in TDF (celiac disease (excluded from further analyses), helicobacter gastritis, and three esophagitis) and two in TAF group (two esophagitis) had a pathological finding in esophagogastroduodenoscopy. Villi were flatter (337 (59) vs. 397 (42) µm, p=0.016), crypts non-significantly deeper (200 (46) vs. 176 (27) µm, p=0.2), and villus to crypt ratio lower (1.5 (0.42) vs. 2.5 (0.51), p=0.009) in TDF vs. TAF group. I-FABP concentration was higher in TDF vs. TAF group (3.0 (1.07) vs. 1.8 (0.53) ng/ml, p=0.003). TDF group had numerically but not statistically significantly lower concentrations of folate, vitamins A, B1, D, and E. COX/SDH staining showed signs of mitochondrial damage in 10 participants in TDF and 11 in TAF group. EM studies showed similar mitochondrial damage in both groups. CONCLUSIONS: Duodenal villous alterations may explain TDF-associated decrease in body weight and plasma lipids. Larger studies are needed to evaluate concentrations of nutrients absorbed from duodenum among TDF users.

Background: The risks of invasive prenatal tests are reported in previous studies such as miscarriage, fetal anomalies, and bleeding. However, few compare short-term and long-term outcomes between invasive tests. This study aims to investigate obstetric, perinatal, and children's neurodevelopmental outcomes following chorionic villus sampling (CVS) or amniocentesis in singleton pregnancy. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included healthy singleton pregnancies underwent transabdominal CVS (gestational age [GA] at 10-13 weeks) or amniocentesis (GA at 15-21 weeks) at a single medical center between 2012 and 2022. Only cases with normal genetic results were eligible. Short-term and long-term neurodevelopmental outcomes were evaluated. Results: The study included 200 CVS cases and 498 amniocentesis cases. No significant differences were found in body mass index, parities, previous preterm birth, conception method, and cervical length (CL) before an invasive test between the groups. Rates of preterm labor, preterm premature rupture of the membranes, preterm birth, neonatal survival, neonatal short-term morbidities, and long-term neurodevelopmental delay were similar. However, the CVS group had a higher rate of cervical cerclage due to short CL before 24 weeks (7.0%) compared to the amniocentesis group (2.4%). CVS markedly increased the risk of cervical cerclage due to short CL (adjusted odd ratio [aOR] = 3.17, 95%CI [1.23-8.12], p = 0.016), after considering maternal characteristics. Conclusion: Performing CVS resulted in a higher incidence of cerclage due to short cervix or cervical dilatation compared to amniocentesis in singleton pregnancies. This highlights the importance of cautious selection for CVS and the necessity of informing women about the associated risks beforehand.

Reconstructing the microscale villous organisation and functionality of the small intestine is essential for developingin vitroplatforms tailored for absorption studies as well as for investigating intestinal morphogenesis in development and disease. However, the current fabrication techniques able to mimic the villus-crypt axis poses significant challenges in terms of reconstruction of the complex 3D microarchitecture. These challenges extend beyond mere structural intricacies to encompass the incorporation of diverse cell types and the management of intricate fluid dynamics within the system. Here, we introduce a novel microfluidic device calledIn-Crypts, which integrates a cell-instructive membrane aimed at inducing and guiding Caco-2 cells morphogenesis. Patterned topographical cues embossed onto the porous membrane induce the formation of a well-organized intestinal epithelium, characterized by proliferating crypt-like domains and differentiated villus-like regions. Notably, our cell-instructive porous membrane effectively sustains stem cells development, faithfully replicating the niche environment ofin vivointestinal crypts thus mirroring the cell biogeography observedin vivo. Moreover, by introducing dynamic fluid flow, we provide a faithful recapitulation of the native microenvironmental shear stress experienced by the intestinal epithelium. This stress plays a crucial role in influencing cell behaviour, differentiation, and overall functionality, thus offering a highly realistic model for studying intestinal physiology and pathology. The resulting intestinal epithelium exhibits significantly denser regions of mucus and microvilli, characteristic typically absent in static cultures, upregulating more than 1.5 of the amount expressed in the classical flattened configuration, enhanced epithelial cell differentiation and increased adsorptive surface area. Hence, the innovative design ofIn-Cryptsproves the critical role of employing a cell-instructive membrane in argument the physiological relevance of organs-on-chips. This aspect, among others, will contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of organism function, directly impacting drug discovery and development.

Morphological evaluation of the small intestine mucosa and apoptosis activity (caspase-3) is necessary to assess the severity of damage to the small intestine. At the same time, proliferative index based on Ki-67 can be used to assess the regenerative potential of the small intestine. Fragments of small intestine of Wistar rats (n=60) of three groups: I) control (n=20); II) experimental group (n=20; local single electron irradiation at a dose of 2 Gy), III) experimental group (n=20; local single electron irradiation at a dose of 8 Gy) were studied by light microscopy using hematoxylin and eosin staining and immunohistochemical reactions with antibodies to Ki-67 and caspase-3. In all samples of the experimental groups, a decrease in all morphometric indices was observed on day 1 with a tendency to recover on day 3. Small intestinal electron irradiation led to disturbances in the histoarchitecture of varying severity, and an increase in cell apoptosis was observed (increased expression of caspase-3 and decrease in Ki-67). In addition, modulation of the PI3K/AKT and MAPK/ERK signaling pathways was detected. The most pronounced destructive changes were observed in the group of 8 Gy single electron irradiation. Local irradiation of the small intestine with electrons at a dose of 2 and 8 Gy results in a decrease in the number of enterocytes, mainly stem cells of the intestinal crypts.

Aim This study aims to assess the effect of implementing an enhanced prenatal genetic checklist to guide the provider's discussion on both screening and diagnostic options for fetal aneuploidy testing at the initial prenatal visit. Methods A retrospective quality improvement (QI) project was performed at a single, large, urban academic medical center. The implementation of this project was prospective; however, data was examined retrospectively after the QI initiative was implemented for three months. Patients were included if they were less than 24 weeks gestational age with a live intrauterine gestation at their initial obstetric (OB) visit. Patients less than 18 years old at the initial OB visit were excluded. The results were analyzed using the statistical software R. Chi-squared tests were used to examine proportional differences between the pre- and post-intervention groups with respect to demographic and clinical characteristics and documented genetic counseling discussions. Results A total of 416 patients were included in the final cohort. As measured by documentation, the rate of discussion of diagnostic prenatal genetic testing increased significantly from the pre-intervention proportion of 54% to the post-intervention proportion of 72% (p < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis of patients with advanced maternal age, the rate of discussion of diagnostic prenatal genetic testing increased significantly from the pre-intervention proportion of 53% to the post-intervention proportion of 83% (p = 0.003), and the rate of genetics counseling referrals made at the initial prenatal visit increased significantly from 4% pre-intervention to 38% post-intervention (p < 0.001). Conclusions The use of an enhanced prenatal genetic checklist led to increased discussion of diagnostic fetal aneuploidy testing and increased rates of referral to genetics counseling.

Terminal differentiation requires massive restructuring of the transcriptome. During intestinal differentiation, the expression patterns of nearly 4,000 genes are altered as cells transition from progenitor cells in crypts to differentiated cells in villi. We identify dynamic occupancy of RNA polymerase II (Pol II) to gene promoters as the primary driver of transcriptomic shifts during intestinal differentiation in vivo. Changes in enhancer-promoter looping interactions accompany dynamic Pol II occupancy and are dependent upon HNF4, a pro-differentiation transcription factor. Using genetic loss-of-function, chromatin immunoprecipitation sequencing (ChIP-seq), and immunoprecipitation (IP) mass spectrometry, we demonstrate that HNF4 collaborates with chromatin remodelers and loop-stabilizing proteins and facilitates Pol II occupancy at hundreds of genes pivotal to differentiation. We also explore alternate mechanisms that drive differentiation gene expression and find that pause-release of Pol II and post-transcriptional mRNA stability regulate smaller subsets of differentially expressed genes. These studies provide insights into the mechanisms of differentiation in renewing adult tissue.

Developments in preconception and prenatal technologies have led to undeniable advances in how health-care providers screen and treat patients. Despite these advances, at any point errors can occur leading to misdiagnosis or a missed diagnosis. In some instances, the missed information can lead to the birth of a child with health issues where short of the error, the decision to avoid conception or terminate the pregnancy might have been made. When these lapses unfold, there exists the potential for a wrongful birth or wrongful life lawsuit to ensue. While these 2 actions are based on the same set of events, they are distinct legal claims with varying degrees of judicial permissibility. Global legal acceptability of wrongful birth and life lawsuits tends to resemble patterns in the United States. Analyzing prior wrongful birth and wrongful life claims can reveal common trends in events leading to these types of lawsuits, as well as an understanding of their potential outcomes. A familiarity with wrongful birth and wrongful life lawsuits demonstrates how these cases are unique from other forms of prenatal or birth injury tort lawsuits and can provide insights to common shortcomings in clinical practice. Applying these lessons to clinical practice highlights key approaches towards limiting the risk of certain errors leading to wrongful birth and wrongful life lawsuits, with the goal of health-care providers offering high quality health care.

Rare earth elements (REEs) exposure during pregnancy may increase the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion. However, the association between REEs intrauterine exposure and unexplained spontaneous abortion had yet to be studied. In order to conduct this large case-control study, we thus collected chorionic villus from 641 unexplained spontaneous abortion and 299 control pregnant women and detected the concentrations of 15 REEs by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS). Because the detection rates of 10 REEs were less than 80%, the remaining 5 REEs, which were lanthanum (La), cerium (Ce), praseodymium (Pr), neodymium (Nd) and yttrium (Y), underwent to further analysis. The association between 5 REEs and unexplained spontaneous abortion was assessed by using the logistic regression, bayesian kernel regression (BKMR) and weighted quantile sum regression (WQS) models. In the adjusted logistic regression model, Pr, Nd and Y enhanced the incidence of unexplained spontaneous abortion in a dose-dependent way and Ce increased the risk only at high concentration group. The result of BKMR model demonstrated that the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion increased as the percentile of five mixed REEs increased. Y and Nd were both significantly associated with an increased incidence of unexplained spontaneous abortion, but La was correlated with a decrease in the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion. Pr was substantially associated with an increase in the risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion when other REEs concentrations were fixed at the 25th and 50th percentiles. According to WQS regression analysis, the WQS index was significantly associated with unexplained spontaneous abortion (OR = 3.75, 95% CI:2.40-5.86). Y had the highest weight, followed by Nd and Pr, which was consistent with the analysis results of our other two models. In short, intrauterine exposure to REEs was associated with an increased risk of unexplained spontaneous abortion, with Y, Nd and Pr perhaps playing an essential role.

The objective of this study was to determine the effects of different lipid sources, with or without a probiotic, on the gastrointestinal tract, immune system and blood parameters of Ross 308 male chickens. In this study, 360 one-day-old chickens were randomly allotted to six treatments with six replicates. Experimental diets were: (1) control (CTL); (2) a diet containing 30 g/kg lipid from tallow (CTL+TLW); (3) a diet containing 30 g/kg lipid from soybean oil (CTL+SO); (4) the basal diet plus a probiotic (CTL+PRO), (5) a diet containing 30 g/kg tallow plus probiotic (TLW+PRO); and (6) a diet containing 30 g/kg soybean oil plus probiotic (SO+PRO). The percentage of liver and jejunum in the treatments that used tallow alone or tallow with probiotics had a significant increase as compared to the control. The villus height and crypt depth of the ileum and villus height/crypt depth in the treatments that used soybean oil and probiotic alone had a significant increase compared to the control. The weight of the spleen, bursa of Fabricius, and thymus in the treatments that used probiotics had a significant increase compared to the control. The amount of alkaline phosphatase and alanine aminotransferase as well as triacylglycerol in the treatment containing probiotic and its mixture with soybean oil had the least significant difference with the control. The results showed that the use of soybean oil, probiotics, and their mixture can improve intestinal morphology, strengthen the immune system, and reduce liver enzymes in chickens.

Lactic acid bacteria, found in heterogenous niches, are known for their health-endorsing properties and are in demand as prospective probiotics. Hence, the scientific community around the globe is in continuous search for novel and new potential strains with extensive applicability and minimum risk. In this context, the present study evaluated the efficiency of Lactiplantibacillus plantarum (P2F2) of human origin, a highly autoaggregating and coaggregating (with pathogens) strain, for its colonization, growth promotion, and immunomodulation. Results indicated moderate hydrophobicity on adhesion to xylene and n-hexadecane and weak electron-donating properties with chloroform. The biofilm of P2F2 formed on polystyrene was strong and highly correlated to exopolysaccharide production. The autoaggregation was moderately correlated with hydrophobicity and biofilm production. It was noted that the P2F2 strain modulated the gut microbiota and increased intestinal villi length in Wistar rats. The lipid and glucose profiles remained intact. P2F2 treatment increased the activity of reactive oxygen species-generating cells in the peritoneal cavity, besides augmenting the mitogen-induced splenocyte proliferation and maintained the immunoglobulins at the normal level. Results from this study conclusively suggest that the strain P2F2 adheres to the intestine and modulates the gut ecosystem besides enhancing cell-mediated immunity without altering the serological parameters tested.

Obesity rates are increasing world-wide with most of the increase in women of the reproductive age group. While recognised as an important contributor to non-communicable diseases, pregnant women with obesity are particularly at risk of not only maternal and pregnant complications but also have an increased risk of congenital malformations. Furthermore, pregnant obese women are more likely to be older and therefore at a greater risk of aneuploidy. Prenatal diagnosis in these women especially those who are morbidly obese is challenging due not only to their weight but the implications of the increase adiposity on biochemical markers of aneuploidy. In this review we discuss the current challenges in providing prenatal diagnosis for these women including those related to the ergonomics of ultrasound and those inherent in them because of their obesity. Appropriate counselling for these women should include the lower sensitivity of the tests, the difficulties in performing some of the procedures (imaging and invasive testing) as well as the increased risk of structural abnormalities related to their obesity.

Coffee pulp is a by-product of the coffee industry. Due to conventional management techniques, it represents a severe environmental problem due to its negative impact on the soil (anaerobic fermentation and pH changes), water sources (the infiltration of pollutants into streams, acidification of water sources, and modification of microorganisms), and biodiversity (soil microbiology, fish, crustaceans, and other vertebrates). Therefore, it is essential to develop protocols for the treatment of this waste so that it can be used again in other productive activities under the circular economy approach. This means that all the waste from a production process can be reused, can generate value for the benefit of the producer, and, in turn, mitigate the environmental impact. The objective of this study was to evaluate the replacement of 5 levels of wheat bran (WB) with extruded coffee pulp flour (ECPF) as an alternative to a conventional fiber source in broiler finisher diets. A total of 300 Cobb 500 chickens in the finishing phase were assessed in the study, grouped in 5 treatments: T1, a conventional diet or control treatment (100% WB and 0% ECPF), T2 (75% WB and 25% ECPF), T3 (50% WB and 50% ECPF), T4 (25% WB and 75% ECPF), and T5 (0% WB and 100% ECPF). Feed intake, weight gain, feed conversion ratio (FCR), and intestinal morphometry (villus length: VL, villus width: VW, crypt depth: CD, villus height/crypt depth ratio: V/C, and villus surface area: VSA) were evaluated at the level of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum. Feed intake decreased correspondingly as the ECPF in the diet was increased, with statistical differences (p < 0.01) between their averages; the most significant weight gain (834.61 g) was evidenced with the T2 treatment, this being statistically different (p < 0.01) from T4 and T5; similarly, the best FCR (1.58) was evidenced with the T2 treatment, followed by the control treatment T1 (with 1.64); however, they were not statistically different (p > 0.05). All treatment results were similar to the VL control samples in the three intestinal portions, except for the T5 in the jejunum, which showed statistical differences from the control. In VW, the treatment results were similar to the control samples of the jejunum and ileum; however, in the duodenum, the T5 results showed the highest value (172.18 µm), being statistically different (p < 0.05) from the other treatments being evaluated. For CD, it was only in the duodenum that the T2 and T3 treatments were similar to the control. Likewise, for V/C in the duodenum, only the T2 results were similar to the control. There was no significant difference in the VSA among the different treatment groups. T2 showed better production parameters without altering the intestinal villi. In conclusion, ECPF is a potential input for use to replace up to 25% of WB in the feed of broilers in the finishing phase.

Mounting evidence suggests that environmental pollutants may affect reproductive health, potentially leading to adverse outcomes like pregnancy loss. However, it remains unclear whether exposure to synthetic phenolic antioxidants (SPAs) correlates with early pregnancy loss (EPL). This study explores SPA exposure's link to EPL and its potential molecular mechanisms. From 2021 to 2022, 265 early pregnant women (136 serum and 129 villus samples) with and without EPL were enrolled. We quantified 17 SPAs in serum and chorionic villus, with AO1010, AO3114, BHT, AO2246, and BHT-Q frequently being detected, suggesting their ability to cross the placental barrier. AO1135 showed a positive relationship with EPL in sera, indicating a significant monotonic dose-response relationship (p-trend <0.001). BHT-Q exhibited a similar relationship with EPL in villi. Inhibitory effects of BHT-Q on estradiol (E2) were observed. Molecular docking revealed SPA-protein interactions involved in E2 synthesis. SPA-induced EPL might occur with specific serum levels of AO1135 and certain villus levels of AO1010, BHT-Q, and AO2246. BHT-Q emerges as a potential biomarker for assessing EPL risk. This study provides insights into understanding of the exposure to SPAs and potential adverse outcomes in pregnant women.
