Introduction: Waist-based indicators of obesity are being used to detect central obesity and are predictive for metabolic syndrome (MS). The aim of the study is to assess the basic anthropometric indices in children, to determine the prevalence of overweight and obesity, and to determine the association between various waist-based measurements and body mass index (BMI). Methodology: A cross-sectional study was conducted among children aged 10 to 15 years attending government corporation schools in Chennai. Basic anthropometric measurements were taken. BMI, waist circumference/height ratio (WHtR), and waist circumference/hip circumference ratio (WHR) were calculated. The percentiles (Indian reference cutoffs) were determined for waist circumference (WC) and BMI. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was determined and compared to waist-based parameters. Results: Of 820 children, males constituted 47.1%. Stunting was seen in 9.8% and 7.8% were underweight. 8.2% had BMI less than the 3rd percentile. The prevalence of overweight and obese children was 9% and 3.2%, respectively, with female predominance. The majority had WC less than the 5th percentile. The prevalence of children under risk for MS based on WC >70th percentile was 4.5% and based on WHtR >0.5 was 8.2%. A significant association was identified between all waist-based anthropometric measurements to detect children at risk for MS and overweight/obese children as per BMI category. WHtR >0.5 was an indicator of overweight/obese children in logistic regression analysis. Conclusion: Early identification of children at risk of MS would require a combination of BMI to detect general obesity and waist-based anthropometric measurements to identify central obesity.

BACKGROUND: Ethiopia is reported to have one of the highest prevalence of underweight among lactating mothers in Africa. In our study setting, the nutritional report from the district health office showed a high number of underweight lactating mothers and recurrent malnutrition problems. However, the determinants of underweight among lactating mothers were not well understood in our study setting. The study aimed to assess the determinants of underweight among lactating mothers in public health facilities of Siraro District, Southern Ethiopia. METHODS: Unmatched case control study was conducted among 390 (130 cases and 260 controls) lactating mothers in public health facilities of Siraro District from April 30 to May 30/2022. Cases were lactating mothers with BMI < 18.5 kg/m2 and controls were mothers whose BMI was ≥ 18.5 kg/m2. To identify the determinants of underweight, bivariate and multivariable binary logistic regression analysis were carried out. The final model was interpreted using adjusted odds ratio (AOR), along with a 95% confidence interval (CI). Significance was declared at p-value < 0.05. RESULT: Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that having; antenatal care visits [AOR = 0.43, 95% CI (0.26,0.72)], latrine availability [AOR = 0.50,95% CI (0.27,0.93)], poor food consumption score [AOR = 5.40, 95% CI (3.15,9.27)], inadequate dietary diversity score [AOR = 1.66, 95% CI (1.20,2.78)], medium [AOR = 3.34, 95% CI (1.52,7.33)] and poor wealth index [AOR = 6.32, 95%CI(3.12,12.81)] were significantly associated with being underweight among lactating mothers. CONCLUSION: Antenatal care visits, latrine availability, poor food consumption scores, inadequate dietary diversity score, medium and poor wealth index were the determinants of underweight. A multi-sectoral approach focusing on latrine construction, economic empowerment and food diversification, as well as ongoing awareness creation, is essential to increase the nutritional status of lactating mothers and break the vicious cycle of malnutrition.

BACKGROUND: This study aims to investigate the association between malnutrition and early childhood caries (ECC) and caries activity among children aged 3-5 years, in order to provide a theoretical basis for preventing and blocking ECC and improving malnutrition. METHODS: Children aged 3-5 years from six kindergartens in Zhao Xian, China were enrolled in this study. The decayed, missing, filled teeth (dmft) of all children were examined and recorded. The Cariostat method was used to detect dental caries activity, collect anthropometric data and measure haemoglobin concentration. Parents were asked to complete a questionnaire on the general characteristics and oral health behaviour of the participants. The "Growth Standards for Chinese Children Under 7 Years Old" was used to assess the nutritional status of all participating children. Wilcoxon rank sum test and multivariate logistic regression analysis were used to analyse and evaluate the relationship between ECC, caries activity and malnutrition. RESULTS: A total of 635 children who met the criteria were included in this study. After adjusting for confounding factors, logistic regression showed that the risk of ECC was significantly increased in underweight children compared with normal children (OR = 5.43, P < 0. 05); compared with normal children, the risk of ECC decreased in overweight and obese children (OR = 0.31, P < 0.001); underweight children had higher caries severity than normal weight children, and the difference was statistically significant (OR = 2.69, P < 0. 05); stunted children had higher caries severity than normal weight children and the difference was statistically significant (OR = 2.28, P < 0.05); underweight was positively associated with caries activity and the association was statistically significant (OR = 2.33, P < 0. 05); stunting was positively associated with caries activity and the association was statistically significant (OR = 2.1, P < 0.05); overweight and obesity were negatively associated with caries activity and the association was statistically significant (OR = 0.61, P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The risk of ECC among children aged 3-5 years was positively associated with undernutrition and negatively associated with overnutrition. The severity of ECC among children aged 3-5 years was positively associated with undernutrition. The caries activity among children aged 3-5 years was positively associated with undernutrition and negatively associated with overnutrition.

OBJECTIVES: Shifts in socioeconomic factors, healthcare access, lifestyle and infrastructure facilities have resulted in increased body mass index (BMI) of populations in developing countries. These shifts result in a large increase in overweight and obese individuals, with a corresponding decline in the number of those who are underweight. Although this nutritional transition among women in Bangladesh is evident, studies elucidating such change are scarce. This study aimed to explain how socioeconomic, healthcare access and infrastructural shifts contributed to the nutritional transition among women of childbearing age in Bangladesh between 2004 and 2018. STUDY DESIGN: Repeated cross-sectional study of respondents who participated in the latest five rounds of Bangladesh Demographic Health Surveys (BDHS) from 2004 to 2017-18. METHODS: Applying counterfactual decomposition techniques to data from the latest five rounds of BDHS, this study examined how variations in observed nutrition-related determinants, and returns to them across rounds, contributed to the nutritional transition among women of childbearing age. RESULTS: Shifts in nutritional outcomes were primarily attributed to gains in partner's education, improved access to healthcare, a decline in breastfeeding practice and the number of births. Wealth accumulation, contraception and improved sanitation facilities appeared as secondary contributing factors. Additionally, this study identified that the BMI gap widened between the lower and the upper quantile of the distribution over the study period. CONCLUSIONS: Addressing the rise in BMI and the prevalence of overnutrition is imperative for the future health of the population in Bangladesh. Considering the study findings and existing national nutrition policies and programmes, it is evident that targeted policy interventions, programmatic approaches and multisectoral collaborations are essential.

BACKGROUND: This study was conducted to examine the prevalence of malnutrition in Syrian immigrant children living in Turkey. METHODS: The study was carried out in the city of Mardin, which is one of the cities with a high Syrian immigrant population in Turkey. Height, body weight and BMI values were recorded to determine the malnutrition status of the children. Z-scores of children were calculated using the malnutrition assessment WHOAntro program. RESULTS: The data show that 30.5% of Syrian children between the ages of 0 and 6 months are male, making up 55.8% of the total, and that 55.3% do not follow a regular breakfast schedule. The percentages of body weight for height, height for age, and BMI for age of Syrian children with a score between - 2 and + 2 SD Number were (89.3%), (74.3%), and (79.3%), respectively. Girls are more likely than boys to experience stunting and low body weight in the context of Syrian children (Stunting OR: 0.855(0.761-1.403), Underweight OR: 0.705(0.609-1,208)). Additionally, there is a link between levels of stunting and underweight and elements like the mother's educational level and the family's income. Contrary to the situation of adequate nutrition, it was discovered that the likelihood of stunting and low body weight in children increased by 0.809 and 1.039 times, respectively, when access to an adequate food supply was not available within the family (p < 0.05). CONCLUSION: s According to the results of the study, gender, family income, mother's education level and access to food affected the severity of malnutrition in children. Migration is an imporatnt factor affecting children's health. In this study malnutrition was found high im immigrant children. Programs should be developed to monitor the growth and development of disadvantaged children and to support their nutrition.

Cognitive decline and comorbid conditions commonly co-occur, and these conditions can affect cognitive health. We aimed to estimate the prevalence of cognitive impairment (CI) according to weight status and to evaluate the associations between CI, weight status and comorbid conditions in adults of 55 years and older. The Abbreviated Mental Test Score (AMTS) was used. Logistic regressions were performed. Overall, 415 individuals were included. The mean age was 75.7 ± 10.1 years, and the mean BMI was 26.2 ± 6.9 kg/m2. The prevalence of CI was 20.7% in the whole study group and 31%, 24.8%, 17.7% and 10.2% in underweight, normal weight, overweight and obese individuals, respectively; p < 0.004. The low folate, vitamin D and prealbumin levels were more frequently found in individuals with CI compared with those without CI. Compared with the obese individuals, a higher odds ratio of prevalent CI was noted for underweight individuals OR 3.89 (95% CI 1.54-9.80); p = 0.004. Additionally, male gender, older age, stroke, having three or more comorbid conditions and findings of undernutrition were significantly associated with CI. Being underweight was associated with an increased risk of CI. Prevention strategies including the monitoring of nutritional status may help to prevent cognitive decline and promote healthy aging.

BACKGROUND: Severely underweight (SUW) children contribute significantly to under-five mortality and morbidity. There are WHO guidelines for the management of severe acute malnutrition but no specific guidelines for SUW management. OBJECTIVE: The objectives were to achieve a recovery rate of 30% at 90 days of treatment for severe underweight (SUW) children aged 6-60 months, compare changes in weight-for-age Z (WAZ) scores, growth patterns, and case fatality rates between intervention and reference arms (RA), and reduce the prevalence of SUW in the intervention arm (IA). The target of a 30% recovery rate was achievable and significant based on our past research conducted in similar settings. METHODS: Design: A prospective controlled community-based, longitudinal, two arms (IA, RA), intervention study with long follow-up was conducted between January 2011 and October 2023. SETTING: Primary care for participants from 14 villages in rural Melghat, India. PARTICIPANTS: The study participants included SUW children aged 6-60 months and age-matched (±2 weeks) normal controls. The SAMMAN (Acronym for SAM-Management) intervention was comprised of local therapeutic food-micronutrient (LTF-MN) therapy for 90 days, intensive behavior change communication, infection treatment, and quarterly anthropometric records. SUW recovery, growth patterns, case fatality rate, prevalence at 90 days of therapy and at 60 months of age, and survival until early adolescence were assessed. ANCOVA analysis was used to obtain changes in Z-scores. RESULTS: In the IA, the recovery rate was 36.8% at 90 days and 78.2% at 60 months of age. The mean difference in change in WAZ scores between the intervention arm and the reference arm was statistically significant (p < 0.0001). Growth patterns were similar between the two arms up to early adolescence. The SUW case fatality rate was significantly lower in the IA (0.9%) as compared to 4.62% in the RA at 60 months (p = 0.022). The reduction in SUW prevalence in intervention villages was higher than in the control villages (p < 0.001). The cost of management per SUW child was 3888 INR (47 USD) less than RUTF. CONCLUSION: The SAMMAN intervention is safe and cost-effective for significantly improving WAZ scores, sustainable, and hence replicable in resource-limited areas.

AIM: Undernurition stands as a significant contributor to childhood mortality, particularly in developing nations such as India. At the grass root level, anthropometric monitoring indicators such as stunting, underweight and wasting take place within Anganwadi centres (village courtyard). The scrutiny of growth records, utilising these markers, not only quantifies the burden but also informs corrective measures. This study aimed to assess the prevailing growth monitoring records within the rural vicinity of Puducherry. METHODS: A community-based cross-sectional study design was implemented to examine the health condition of children below 3 years of age, who were enrolled and utilising services in Anganwadi centres. The anthropometric data, such as weight and height, were collected from growth monitoring records maintained in Anganwadi. The proportions of undernutrition indicators such as stunting, underweight and wasting were presented with a 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Within our rural service area encompassing 13 Anganwadis, a total of 572 children aged 3 or less were registered. Notably, approximately 14.2% (95% CI: 11.5-17.3) of these children experienced underweight, 16.4% (95% CI: 13.6-19.7) were stunted and 13.3% (95% CI: 10.8-16.3) were wasted. In terms of gender disparities, the prevalence of undernurition was notably higher among boy children, with 15.4% being underweight, 16.9% stunted and 14.7% wasted. CONCLUSIONS: The prevalence of childhood undernurition is a public health concern, demanding the enhancement of existing nutritional initiatives to ameliorate the healthy well-being of these children. The timely identification of malnourished children holds paramount importance, as intensified interventions can be promptly employed to uplift the health status of these vulnerable individuals.

Obesity and underweight are a growing health problem worldwide and a challenge for clinicians concerning antithrombotic therapy, due to the associated risks of thrombosis and/or bleeding. This clinical consensus statement updates a previous one published in 2018, by reviewing the most recent evidence on antithrombotic drugs based on body size categories according to the World Health Organization classification. The document focuses mostly on individuals at the extremes of body weight, i.e. underweight and moderate-to-morbid obesity who require antithrombotic drugs, according to current guidelines, for the treatment or prevention of cardiovascular diseases or venous thromboembolism. Managing antithrombotic therapy or thromboprophylaxis in these individuals is challenging, due to profound changes in body composition, metabolism and organ function, altered drug pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics, as well as weak or no evidence from clinical trials. The document also includes artificial intelligence simulations derived from in silico pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic models, which can mimic the pharmacokinetic changes and help identify optimal regimens of antithrombotic drugs for severely underweight or severely obese individuals. Further, bariatric surgery in morbidly obese subjects is frequently performed worldwide. Bariatric surgery causes specific and additional changes in metabolism and gastrointestinal anatomy, depending on the type of the procedure, which can also impact the pharmacokinetics of antithrombotic drugs and their management. Based on existing literature, the document provides consensus statements on optimising antithrombotic drug management for underweight and all classes of obese patients, while highlighting the current gaps in knowledge in these complex clinical settings, which require personalized medicine and precision pharmacology.

Background: Limited knowledge on nutritional epidemiology in Ghanaian children with Cerebral Palsy (CP) necessitates a comprehensive investigation for an improved understanding of malnutrition in this population. Objectives: We aimed to describe the epidemiology of malnutrition among children with CP in Ghana. Methods: The study used data collected as part of the Ghana CP Register (GCPR). The GCPR is an institution-based surveillance of children with CP aged < 18 years in Ghana. Between October 2018 and April 2020, N = 455 children with CP were registered. Data were collected on (i) weight, length or height, mid-upper-arm-circumference of children with CP; (ii) socio-demographic characteristics; (iii) motor type and topography, gross motor function classification system level (GMFCS); (iv) associated impairments; (v) educational and rehabilitation status for each child. Descriptive and bivariate analyses were performed. Results: Mean and standard deviation age of the registered children at assessment was 5.9 ± 4.1 years, and 42.1% were female. Two-thirds of the children had ≥ one form of undernutrition (underweight or severely underweight: 38.9%, stunted or severely stunted: 51.2%, thin or severely thin: 23.8%). In the adjusted analysis, low maternal education, GMFCS-IV, speech impairment and epilepsy significantly increased the odds of undernutrition among participating children (aOR: 2.6 [95% CI:1.3-5.4]; 2.2 [95% CI:1.0-4.8]; 2.0 [95% CI:1.1-3.6]; 2.9 [95% CI:1.1-7.5] respectively). Conclusions: The high malnutrition rate indicates an urgent need for nutrition interventions and translational research to improve nutritional status and prevent adverse outcomes among children with CP in Ghana. Contribution: Our study contributes important data and a framework to develop guidelines and evidence-based interventions for children with CP in Ghana.

Background Childhood immunization programs in underdeveloped nations can improve children's growth and nutritional status and prevent growth delays while protecting against infectious diseases and meeting growth norms. This study aimed to assess the impact of vaccination status on the anthropometric indices of children aged 12-18 months at an Expanded Programme on Immunization vaccination center and compare the anthropometric indices of growth in children with complete and incomplete vaccination statuses. Methodology This study was conducted at the rural health center in Kala Shah Kaku, Pakistan, from November 2023 to December 2023. Children aged 12-18 months were enrolled and their vaccination status was recorded. Height and weight were measured using World Health Organization growth charts. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and chi-square and Fisher's exact tests. A p-value <0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results The mean age of the 110 children who visited the vaccination site for this study was 16.36 months ± 2.415. There were 28 (25.5%) stunted children. In the study, 17.6 (16%) participants were underweight, and 15.95 (14.5%) were wasted. Of the children, 79% had received all recommended vaccinations. A statistically significant (p < 0.05) association was found between vaccination and nutritional status. Conclusions This study emphasizes the significance of vaccination in promoting child health and nutrition, reducing stunting risk, and ensuring equitable access to vaccination services and comprehensive healthcare interventions. This can help mitigate the malnutrition burden and promote optimal growth, contributing to global health and development goals.

Ethiopia is one of the sub-Saharan African countries where underweight among women of reproductive age is high, and it is predisposing to low birth weight, preterm birth, and reduced resistance to infections. Poor water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) and drinking water polluted with disease-causing microorganisms lead to undernutrition. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the association between WASH and underweight among women of reproductive age at Arba Minch Health and Demographic Surveillance Site (HDSS), Southern Ethiopia. A community-based cross-sectional study was conducted at Arba Minch HDSS, South Ethiopia, from April to May 2022. Women of reproductive age were included in the study. Data were collected using a pre-tested questionnaire and checklist. Multivariate analysis was conducted to assess the association separately for WASH indicators with underweight status of the women by adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics. Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) with a 95% confidence interval was used to assess the association. The prevalence of underweight and overweight/obesity among women of reproductive age was 7.82% (95% CI: 5.60, 10.81) and 12.32% (95% CI: 9.50, 15.83), respectively. Latrine hygiene and use were significantly associated with being underweight. The odds of being underweight among those who use clean latrine were 0.43 (95% CI: 0.20, 0.92) compared to those who use unclean latrine or do not have toilet facilities. The utilization of clean latrine facilities is negatively associated with being underweight among women of reproductive age. From WASH components, latrine utilization and keeping the latrine clean to use need to get focused on reducing the risk of being underweight among women of reproductive age.

The transition from nomadism to sedentary lifestyle has introduced changes in diets and undernutrition is endemic among settled pastoral households. This study aimed to investigate the underlying factors affecting stunting, underweight, and wasting of children aged 6-59 months in Marsabit County, Kenya. A cross-sectional household survey was conducted in six wards capturing pastoral, agro-pastoral, and urban livelihood practices. Using multistage sampling method, 394 children aged 6-59 months participated with written consent from the caregivers. A pretested questionnaire and anthropometric measures were used during data collection. Population characteristics were summarized into means and proportions, while chi-square and analysis of variance were used to evaluate associations between variables. Backward logistic regressions were used to explore predictors of stunting, underweight, and wasting, respectively. The results showed that the mean Height for Age Z-score, Weight for Age Z-score, and Weight for Height Z-score were -1.51, 1.54, and 1.02, respectively. The prevalence of stunting, underweight, and wasting was 38.1%, 23.0%, and 18.5%, respectively. The age of child, source of drinking water, and waste disposal were some of the main factors influencing stunting among children. In conclusion, the prevalence of undernutrition was high compared to the World Health Organization recommended cutoffs. Water sources hygiene, and caregiver's income were some of the main predictors of undernutrition among children. Development agencies need to focus on the supply of potable water, access to toilet facilities, in addition to nutrition education on hygienic complementary feeding practices among pastoral caregivers.

Objective: To synthesize current evidence of the association between body mass index (BMI) categories and the risk of exacerbation in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: A systematic search was conducted across three electronic databases: PubMed, Embase, and Scopus. Eligible studies should have reported on the association between BMI (either as continuous or categorical) and a risk of COPD exacerbation, as defined according to recognized clinical criteria. Observational studies (cohort, case-control, cross-sectional) were eligible for inclusion. The Newcastle Ottawa Scale (NOS) was used to evaluate the methodological quality. Combined effect sizes were reported as relative risk (RR) and corresponding 95% confidence intervals (CI). Results: A total of 11 studies were included. Of them, four studies were prospective, and four were retrospective cohorts in design, two were cross-sectional studies and one study was a secondary data analysis from a randomized trial. Compared to patients with normal BMI, underweight patients had increased risk of COPD exacerbation (RR 1.90, 95% CI: 1.03, 3.48; N=7, I2=94.2%). Overweight and obese BMI status was associated with a similar risk of exacerbation. Conclusion: Our findings report that underweight, but not overweight or obese patients, have increased risk of COPD exacerbation, compared to individuals with normal BMI. This differential association emphasizes the need for nuanced investigations into the underlying mechanisms of the impact of BMI on the course of COPD. Further research is needed to inform personalized interventions and improved COPD management strategies.

BACKGROUND: Undernutrition, which includes stunting, wasting, and underweight, is a global problem, especially among children of low- and middle-income countries. To our knowledge, this study is first of its type from Afghanistan. Its main objectives were to estimate the prevalence and associated risk factors of stunting, wasting/thinness, and underweight among urban primary school children in Kandahar city of Afghanistan. METHODS: This school-based cross-sectional study was conducted among 1205 primary school children aged 6-12 years during a period of six months (October 2022-March 2023). Anthropometric measurements and other data were collected from all the participants. Data were analyzed by using descriptive statistics, Chi square test (using crude odds ratio or COR), and multivariate logistic regression (using adjusted odds ratio or AOR). RESULTS: Among the 1205 enrolled government school students, 47.4%, 19.5%, and 25.6% had stunting, wasting/thinness, and underweight, respectively. Statistically significant factors associated with stunting were age group 6-9 years (AOR 1.3, 95% CI 1.1-1.7), being girl (AOR 2.3, 95% CI 1.8-3.0), poverty (AOR 2.2, 95% CI 1.5-3.2), large family (AOR 3.0, 95% CI 2.4-3.9), illiterate mother (AOR 1.6, 95% CI 1.0-2.6), jobless head of the family (AOR 3.3, 95% CI 2.3-4.8), and skipping breakfasts (AOR 1.7, 95% CI 1.2-2.3). Main factor associated with wasting/thinness were age group 6-9 years (AOR 30.5, 95% CI 11.8-78.7), skipping breakfasts (AOR 22.9, 95% CI 13.9-37.8), and history of sickness during the past two weeks (AOR 17.0, 95% CI 6.6-43.8). Also, main factors associated with underweight were age group 6-9 years (AOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.6-4.1), skipping breakfasts (AOR 2.6, 95% CI 1.8-3.6), and poor sanitation (AOR 1.9, 95% CI 1.1-3.2). CONCLUSIONS: Stunting, wasting/thinness, and underweight are highly prevalent among primary school children (both girls and boys) in Kandahar city. It is recommended that local government (Afghanistan Ministry of Education and Ministry of Public Health) with the help of international organizations and donor agencies should implement comprehensive school-based feeding programs especially for girls. Health and nutrition education programs should be conducted with emphasis on nutrition of children aged 6-9 years as well as importance of healthy breakfast and good sanitation.

Objectives: This study aimed to identify dietary knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to obesity and highly underweight among urban Chinese high school students. Methods: Using the data of 403 high school students from a cross-sectional survey in 2022, multinomial logistic regression analysis was conducted with the body mass index as the objective variable (reference: normal weight), dietary knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors as the explanatory variables, adjusted for sex. Results: Both obesity and highly underweight were most strongly related to incorrect dietary knowledge of desirable types of diets. Additionally, obesity was related to inappropriate dietary attitudes regarding the importance of diet, eating at irregular meal-times, and eating without chewing well, while highly underweight was related to picky eating and not having three meals per day, but not related to attitudes. Conclusion: The incorrect knowledge of desirable type of diet was related to both obesity and highly underweight, while other risk factors of knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to obesity or highly underweight differed respectively. These findings should be useful in examining effective nutrition education for urban Chinese high school students.

BACKGROUND: Increasing evidence supports the association between body mass index (BMI), Alzheimer's disease, and vascular markers. Recently, metabolically unhealthy conditions have been reported to affect the expression of these markers. We aimed to investigate the effects of BMI status on Alzheimer's and vascular markers in relation to metabolic health status. METHODS: We recruited 1,736 Asians without dementia (71.6 ± 8.0 years). Participants were categorized into underweight, normal weight, or obese groups based on their BMI. Each group was further divided into metabolically healthy (MH) and unhealthy (MU) groups based on the International Diabetes Foundation definition of metabolic syndrome. The main outcome was Aß positivity, defined as a Centiloid value of 20.0 or above and the presence of vascular markers, defined as severe white matter hyperintensities (WMH). Logistic regression analyses were performed for Aß positivity and severe WMH with BMI status or interaction terms between BMI and metabolic health status as predictors. Mediation analyses were performed with hippocampal volume (HV) and baseline Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores as the outcomes, and linear mixed models were performed for longitudinal change in MMSE scores. RESULTS: Being underweight increased the risk of Aß positivity (odds ratio [OR] = 2.37, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.13-4.98), whereas obesity decreased Aß positivity risk (OR = 0.63, 95% CI 0.50-0.80). Especially, obesity decreased the risk of Aß positivity (OR = 0.38, 95% CI 0.26-0.56) in the MH group, but not in the MU group. Obesity increased the risk of severe WMH (OR = 1.69, 1.16-2.47). Decreased Aß positivity mediate the relationship between obesity and higher HV and MMSE scores, particularly in the MH group. Obesity demonstrated a slower decline in MMSE (ß = 1.423, p = 0.037) compared to being normal weight, especially in the MH group. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings provide new evidence that metabolic health has a significant effect on the relationship between obesity and Alzheimer's markers, which, in turn, lead to better clinical outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study examines the levels and predictors of malnutrition in Indian children under 5 years of age. METHODS: Composite Index of Anthropometric Failure was applied to data from the India National Family Health Survey 2019-2021. A multivariable logistic regression model was used to assess the predictors. RESULTS: 52.59% of children experienced anthropometric failure. Child predictors of lower malnutrition risk included female gender (adjusted odds ratio (AOR) = 0.881) and average or large size at birth (AOR = 0.729 and 0.715, respectively, compared to small size). Higher birth order increased malnutrition odds (2nd-4th: AOR = 1.211; 5th or higher: AOR = 1.449) compared to firstborn. Maternal predictors of lower malnutrition risk included age 20-34 years (AOR = 0.806), age 35-49 years (AOR = 0.714) compared to 15-19 years, normal BMI (AOR = 0.752), overweight and obese BMI (AOR = 0.504) compared to underweight, and secondary or higher education vs. no education (AOR = 0.865). Maternal predictors of higher malnutrition risk included severe anemia vs. no anemia (AOR = 1.232). Protective socioeconomic factors included middle (AOR = 0.903) and rich wealth index (AOR = 0.717) compared to poor, and toilet access (AOR = 0.803). Children's malnutrition risk also declined with paternal education (primary: AOR = 0.901; secondary or higher: AOR = 0.822) vs. no education. Conversely, malnutrition risk increased with Hindu (AOR = 1.258) or Islam religion (AOR = 1.369) vs. other religions. CONCLUSIONS: Child malnutrition remains a critical issue in India, necessitating concerted efforts from both private and public sectors. A 'Health in All Policies' approach should guide public health leadership in influencing policies that impact children's nutritional status.

This study aimed to identify differences among body mass index (BMI) categories of older family caregivers (≥60 years) and their care recipients (≥65 years). Secondly, this study aimed to examine group differences and factors associated with weight change during a nutrition and oral health intervention. This secondary analysis of a randomized controlled trial (ClinicalTrial.gov (NCT04003493)) involved individually tailored nutritional guidance from a clinical nutritionist and oral health guidance from a dental hygienist. Baseline BMI differences were analyzed, followed by further analyses of group differences and associated factors of weight change over a 6-month period using generalized estimating equations. Among the participants (113 family caregivers and 107 care recipients), 36.3% and 35.1% were overweight (BMI >29 kg/m2), while 18.6% and 21.6% were underweight (BMI <24 kg/m2) at baseline, respectively. For family caregivers differences in BMI categories included age, mid-arm and calf circumferences, and plasma prealbumin concentration. For care recipients differences were observed in medication use, mid-arm and calf circumferences, Mini Nutritional Assessment scores, physical function, and number of teeth. During the 6-month intervention, there were no differences in weight change between intervention and control groups for both caregivers and care recipients. Factors significantly associated (p < 0.05) with weight loss included female sex for both caregivers and care recipients, and frailty for caregivers. Family caregivers' characteristics were not significantly associated with weight change in their care recipients. In conclusion, being overweight is a prevalent among older family caregivers and care recipients. Factors such as age, medication use, physical function, number of teeth, and Mini Nutritional Assessment scores varied across BMI categories. Female sex was associated with weight loss in both older family caregivers and care recipients, and frailty was associated with weight loss in caregivers. Introduction The double burden of malnutrition (DBM) in Pakistan is a rising concern affecting school-going children, marked by coexisting under- and over-nutrition within the same population. Key influences include shifts in dietary habits, socioeconomic status, and lifestyle changes due to rapid urbanization. With a focus on Multan, Pakistan, the study seeks to assess the proportion of underweight and overweight students while identifying the risk factors and sociodemographic characteristics associated with this incidence. The aim is to guide future health interventions addressing this multidimensional health challenge. Materials and methods This study, adopting a descriptive cross-sectional research design, collected data from female teenage students through interviews and anthropometric measurements. A total of 300 participants were randomly selected from a comprehensive school list representing diverse urban and rural settings. Participants' weight and height were measured to calculate their body mass index (BMI), categorizing them into underweight, normal weight, and overweight groups. The relevant risk factors were collected through an interview questionnaire. Collected data were analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics for Windows, Version 26.0 (Released 2019; IBM Corp., Armonk, New York, United States), with the results stratified according to socioeconomic, dietary, and psychosocial factors and compared across different weight categories. Results The study collected data from 300 students, revealing a correlation between socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and BMI. Parental occupation significantly affected nutritional status, with children of laborers primarily falling within normal and underweight categories. Dietary habits like frequency of fast food and milk or dairy consumption showed notable associations with nutritional status. Psychosocial factors such as peer or teacher comments about weight and outdoor sports participation also influenced the students' nutritional status. However, factors like family income, video game hours, and the presence of pets at home did not show significant associations with nutritional status. Conclusions The study illustrates a multi-faceted association between socioeconomic status, dietary habits, and BMI among schoolchildren in Multan, Pakistan, emphasizing the need for comprehensive interventions.
