BACKGROUND: Empirically-based developmental psychopathology approach identified three domains involved in the emergence of borderline personality disorder (BPD): i) underlying liabilities to develop psychopathology (i.e., early patterns of internalizing and externalizing manifestations); ii) invalidating relational experiences (e.g., childhood traumatic experiences, maladaptive parenting, problematic peer relationships); iii) regulatory mechanisms of emotions and behaviors. Nevertheless, no studies have quantitatively summarized empirical findings concerning how and to what extent these domains might be temporally associated to the emergence of BPD features from adolescence to adulthood. METHODS: The current multi-level meta-analysis included 106 studies (N = 86,871 participants) assessing the role of previously mentioned antecedents and risk factors for BPD. RESULTS: The analysis showed moderate effect sizes capturing temporal associations between early internalizing/externalizing psychopathological manifestations, different invalidating relational experiences, emotion/behavior regulation processes with later BPD features. The effect sizes of these domains were not statistically different from each other. CONCLUSION: This evidence supports a transactional developmental model of BPD. Consistently, the emergence of BPD could be viewed in the light of dynamic interplays between an underlying liability to psychopathology and invalidating relational experiences across different stages of development, which are progressively reinforced through increasing alterations of emotion and behavior regulation mechanisms.

This study examines the effect of technostress on teachers' quality of work life and job performance. A moderated mediation model is proposed and tested based on the transactional model of stress and coping. This study proposes organizational flexibility as the boundary condition-a first-level moderator-and quality of work life as the explanatory variable. A sample of 199 university teachers who worked from home or used the hybrid teaching mode was selected. Data were collected through closed-ended questionnaires. Structural equation modeling (SEM) and the Hayes PROCESS Macro (extension in SPSS) were used for hypothesis testing. The results found that the three dimensions of technostress (Techno complexity, Techno invasion, and Techno overload) negatively and significantly affect teachers' quality of work life. However, there are significant positive direct effects of these three dimensions of technostress on employee performance and significant negative indirect effects on performance through quality of work life. Organizational flexibility acts as a significant moderator, where a low value of organizational flexibility enhances the negative relationship between technostress and quality of work life. In contrast, high values of organizational flexibility convert the significant negative relationship into an insignificant impact. The university management must take measures to overcome technostress among teachers by showing flexibility.

Objectives: 1. To describe perceived stress and changes in anxiety and coping among older adults between 2018 and 2020. 2. To examine the moderating roles of social support, exercise, alcohol use, and smoking on the relationship between perceived stress and anxiety. Methods: Longitudinal data collected from 3275 participants (M = 68.1 years) as part of the NZ Health, Work, and Retirement study's 2018 and 2020 biennial surveys, were analyzed using hierarchical regression. Results: Older adults perceived COVID-19 as a low-level source of stress. Social support and alcohol use moderated the relationship between perceived mental stress and anxiety. At high-stress levels, only social support exerted a protective effect against the negative impact of stress on anxiety. Discussion: These findings support the general resilience of many older adults and highlight the effectiveness of coping strategies used by those groups who are more likely to be vulnerable to mental stress during a pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Challenging eating behaviors or feeding difficulties, commonly displayed in children with Down syndrome (DS), may amplify perceived stress in caregivers. If caregivers lack resources on how to accommodate the needs of the child with DS, they may find feeding the child stressful and resort to negative coping strategies. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to understand the feeding stressors, resources, and coping strategies used by caregivers of children with DS. DESIGN: A qualitative analysis of interview transcripts was undertaken, framed around the Transactional Model of Stress and Coping. PARTICIPANTS/SETTING: Between September to November 2021, 15 caregivers of children (aged 2 through 6 years) with DS, were recruited from 5 states located in the Southeast, Southwest, and West regions of the United States. ANALYSIS: Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed using deductive thematic analysis and content analysis approaches. RESULTS: Thirteen caregivers reported increased stress around feeding the child with DS. Stressors identified included concern about adequacy of intake and challenges associated with feeding difficulties. Stress related to feeding was higher among caregivers whose child was learning a new feeding skill or in a transitional phase of feeding. Caregivers used both professional and interpersonal resources in addition to problem- and emotion-based coping strategies. CONCLUSIONS: Caregivers identified feeding as a stressful event with higher stress reported during transitional phases of feeding. Caregivers reported that speech, occupational, and physical therapists were beneficial resources to provide support for optimizing nutrition and skill development. These findings suggest that caregiver access to therapists and registered dietitian nutritionists is warranted.

Background: Cancer is a source of stress related to the resulting change in lifestyle. The processes which take place when a patient is coping with a disease may be explained in terms of the transactional concept of psychological stress (Lazarus, Folkman) and the critical life events model (Filipp). These two complementary theoretical approaches set the direction and aim of the study which was to determine the role played by earlier events responsible for health loss due to a chronic, serious disease in the course of a stress transaction in cancer patients. Materials and methods: The study involved 121 patients with either breast or colorectal cancer undergoing chemotherapy as part of their treatment. They were asked to complete a purpose-designed set of questionnaires which included Revised Illness Perception Questionnaire (IPQ-R), the Mini-Mental Adjustment to Cancer (Mini-MAC) questionnaire, the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), Acceptance of Illness Scale (AIS). The interdependencies between variables were determined using difference significance tests (Mann-Whitney, Kruskal-Wallis) and the Dunn's correction test. The significance level (alpha) of 0.05 was assumed appropriate for the study. Results: Patients with previous health-related events were found to expect the struggle with cancer to be a greater and more serious challenge. Those patients had suffered loss of health prior to getting cancer and their emotional reactions were heightened. This finding allowed the identification of patients more prone to creating a negative view of their disease. Conclusions: When planning a psychological treatment of patients with cancer, an account must be taken of their past life events and earlier experiences of being ill, in order to implement appropriate psychological intervention aimed at reducing their emotional stress.

Background: The progression into the Digital Age has brought an array of novel skill requirements. Unlike traditional literacy, there are currently few measures that can reliably measure eHealth literacy. The Transactional Model of eHealth Literacy and subsequent Transactional eHealth Literacy Instrument may provide a feasible option for measuring eHealth literacy. Objective: This instrument has yet to be validated, which is the aim of this study. In particular, this article was conducted to validate the TeHLI to see which components of the tool (how many and which components included) would be the best fit statistically and whether the tool applies to groups of different characteristics. Methods: We conducted an online cross-sectional study among 236 Vietnamese young people. A exploratory factor analysis was used to identify the best fit model of the Transactional eHealth Literacy Instrument. A confirmatory factor analysis tested measurement invariance at four levels: configural, metric, scalar, and strict invariance. Only metric invariance was partially invariant, while the rest tested fully invariant. Even with partial metric invariance, there is reason to assume that functional, communicative, critical, and translational eHealth literacy (the four levels according to the transactional model) are consistently measured when deploying the Transactional eHealth Literacy Instrument across groups. Results: The study findings substantiate that the most optimal composition of the TeHLI consists of four factors: functional, communicative, critical, and translational eHealth literacy, with RMSEA = 0.116; CFI = 0.907, and the highest internal consistency (Cronbach's α = 0.91, 0.92, 0.88, and 0.92 for each factor respectively). After using measurement invariance, that gender, education, marital status, age, location, and household economy do not influence the way participants to respond to the TeHLI to the point that would introduce measurement bias. In other word, using TeHLI across population groups should not produce error margins that substantially differ from each other. Conclusions: This study suggests the instrument can be used for comparisons across groups and has the potential to generate high-quality data usable for informing change agents as to whether a particular population is proficient enough to adopt novel eHealth innovations.

INTRODUCTION: Previous research reported transactional relations between child functioning and parenting stress. There is limited evidence whether a transactional developmental model also fits children below the age of 12 months, especially in psychosocially burdened families. This study aims to test the fit of a transactional model during the first 3 years of life and examines whether the model differs between families with low and high psychosocial burden. METHODS: A total of 302 psychosocially burdened families were observed over 3 years at age 4, 12, 24, and 36 months. Child behavioral problems and parenting stress were assessed via self-report while psychosocial burden was assessed via external rating at baseline. Cross-lagged panel analysis was used to investigate the fit of a transactional model. RESULTS: A transactional model fitted the data significantly better (Δχ2 = 81.87, p < 0.001) than an autoregressive model reaching acceptable to good fit indices (CFI = 0.96, RMSEA = 0.09). The model indicated moderate stability within and reciprocal effects between child behavioral problems and parenting stress from age 12 to 36 months. From age 4 to 12 months, parenting stress predicted child behavioral problems but not vice-versa. Model fit indices and transactional relations did not substantially differ between families with low and high psychosocial burden, except for child effects on parenting stress during the first year of life, which were only evident in higher burdened families. CONCLUSION: Transactional relations among child and parent variables are evident in the first 3 years of life. Child effects in the first year of life may be restricted to highly psychosocially burdened families. Future research may focus on potential mediating variables such as parental sensitivity or contextual variables like significant life events. Targeted prevention strategies should be adapted to the level of psychosocial burden to account for the differing transactional relations.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure college students' coping strategies and change of lifestyle during the COVID-19 pandemic. PARTICIPANTS: Students from the State University in California were recruited during July 2020. METHODS: A total of 11 focus group meetings were conducted. RESULTS: Students' coping strategies were analyzed aligning with the Transactional model of stress and coping - primary appraisal, secondary appraisal and coping efforts, and meaning-based coping. Their physical activity patterns were dramatically changed. They used various ways of managing stress and tried to overcome the unexpected situation caused by COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS: This study mainly analyzed the three constructs of the transactional model: primary appraisal, secondary appraisal and coping efforts, and meaning-based coping. It is expected that the future study will focus on the last construct, coping outcomes/adaptation after the COVID-19 pandemic to measure the association between coping strategies and their outcomes.

BACKGROUND: This study was designed to evaluate the psychometric properties of a new tool, the Occupational Experience Profile (OEP). The OEP was designed to be used to evaluate people's levels of experiences of pleasure, productivity, restoration, and social connection during their occupational performances. AIM: To evaluate aspects of validity and reliability of the OEP Pleasure, Productivity, Restoration and Social connection scales. METHODS: Fifty-eight occupational therapy students each completed three OEPs. Many-faceted Rasch analyses were then used to examine rating scale structure, dimensionality, and reliability of each OEP scale. Pearson product moment correlations were used to evaluate the strength of the relationships among the four scales. RESULTS: Each of the four OEP rating scales demonstrated effective rating scale functioning. The OEP items on each scale demonstrated acceptable levels of item goodness of fit and worked together to define a unidimensional scale of occupational experiences. The four scales appear to measure different but interrelated constructs. CONCLUSION: The results provide preliminary evidence to support the validity and reliability of the OEP scales, but further research on larger and more diverse samples is recommended. SIGNIFICANCE: The OEP has the potential to be used in occupational therapy practice and research to evaluate how people experience their occupational performances.

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has increased the psychological burden on employees in hotels, which is not conducive to the development of the hospitality industry. Based on a survey of 379 hotel interns from higher vocational colleges in China, this study empirically analyzed the status quo of job burnout in future hotel employees and its influencing factors. The results showed that interns' job burnout and reduced personal accomplishment were at a medium level. Secondly, according to the transaction model, this study classified the antecedents of job burnout into two categories: personal factors and contextual factors. The results showed that personal factors such as attitude and self-efficacy, and contextual factors such as perceived co-worker support and job satisfaction all had a negative effect on job burnout. However, the influence of ability and perceived supervisor support on job burnout was not significant. This study also investigated the influencing factors of each sub-dimension of job burnout. Self-efficacy, attitude and job satisfaction all had a negative influence on the three sub-dimensions. Ability and perceived co-worker support only had a negative impact on reduced personal accomplishment. There was no statistical correlation between perceived supervisor support and the three sub-dimensions. The results of this study will lay a theoretical foundation so that higher vocational colleges can better organize and implement internships, and hotels can recruit energetic future employees.

The present longitudinal study used the traditional cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) and autoregressive latent trajectory model with structured residuals (ALT-SR) to examine the relationships between perceived interparental conflict (IPC), negative thinking (NT), and depression symptoms in Chinese children. Changes in these three variables over time were also examined, as well as the trait and state aspects of the relationships between them. A sample of 516 third-grade primary students completed questionnaires about IPC, NT, and depression three times over a period of 1 year, at 6-month intervals. The CLPM findings indicated that, assuming that stability of each variable across time was controlled, Chinese children's perception of IPC significantly affected their level of depression through the mediating path of NT. After taking trait factors into account, among all the significant autoregressive and cross-lagged paths originally found in the CLPM, only one third remained significant in the ALT-SR model. More specifically, the ALT-SR model, revealed a driving effect of children's NT on perceived IPC and depression symptoms. The CLPM model although elucidated the interplay among three variables, the ALT-SR model showed little evidence of their interrelated growth across time. Taken together, these results indicate that children's perceived IPC in the long term are a stable trait, with few state-level fluctuations, and is not a significant within-person predictor of subsequent children's internalization problems. These perceptions appear to contribute more to children's general psychological tendency than do changes over time. The research is the first to test the reciprocal relationships between Chinese children's perceived IPC, NT, and depression symptoms. The findings demonstrate that previously proposed theories about the bidirectional relation between IPC and children's social adjustment, to some extent, may reflect a correlation at a trait level. Put another way, it is IPC's central tendency to be sensitive in the long term as a stable trait that is associated with their children's general tendency to show well adjustment. The study contributes to our understanding of that extend previous results and have implications for complementary theoretical and practical interventions. The complementary techniques of CLPM and ALT-SR models offer different insights into children's internalization problems, and hold promise for supporting the building of more comprehensive children's developmental theories that acknowledge the interconnectedness of different domains of mental health.

Technostress is evolving as an imperative area of academic research amid the "new normal" settings of working remotely. Research has investigated the relationships between technostress and job outcomes and proposed individual- and organizational-level approaches to manage it. However, insights into the influence of dynamic personality differences on this relationship are limited. This study ties the concept of self-efficacy to the transactional model of stress and coping, and investigates to what extent computer and social self-efficacy moderate the relationships between technostress creators and frontline employee's job performance. Findings shift the focus from the negative aspects of technostress and outcomes to both positive and negative aspects. This study's contributions and implications for theory and practice are discussed.

The aim of this study was to test a longitudinal, transactional model that describes how social withdrawal and friendship development are interrelated in late adolescence, and to investigate if post-secondary transitions are catalysts of change for highly withdrawn adolescents' friendships. Unilateral friendship data of 1,019 adolescents (61.3% female, 91% Dutch-origin) from the Tracking Adolescents' Individual Lives Survey (TRAILS) cohort were collected five times from ages 17 to 18 years. Social withdrawal was assessed at 16 and 19 years. The transactional model was tested within a Structural Equation Modeling framework, with intercepts and slopes of friendship quantity, quality, and stability as mediators and residential transitions, education transitions, and sex as moderators. The results confirmed the presence of a transactional relation between withdrawal and friendship quality. Whereas higher age 16 withdrawal predicted having fewer, lower-quality, and less-stable friendships, only having lower-quality friendships, in turn, predicted higher age 19 withdrawal, especially in girls. Residential transitions were catalysts of change for highly withdrawn youth's number of friends: higher withdrawal predicted a moderate increase in number of friends for adolescents who relocated, and no change for those who made an educational transition or did not transition. Taken together, these results indicate that the quality of friendships-over and above number of friends and the stability of those friendships-is particularly important for entrenching or diminishing withdrawal in late adolescence, and that relocating provides an opportunity for withdrawn late adolescents to expand their friendship networks.

Studies have shown the relationships among cybervictimization, coping strategies, and depression, but no study has examined the mechanism that links the three variables. Accordingly, this study used the transactional model of stress and coping theory as a conceptual framework and proposed that coping strategies are mediators for the effects of cybervictimization on depression. A total of 387 adolescents were recruited by using the purposive sampling method. The results showed that cybervictimization is not directly associated with depression. All the coping strategies are found to be associated with cybervictimization, but only the avoidant coping strategy is the statistical mediator for the effects of cybervictimization on depression. This study's findings suggest that the transactional model of stress and coping theory may provide a framework in the area of cyberbullying and recommend more actions to be taken in order to reduce the use of avoidance coping strategies among victims of cyberbullying.

Purpose: Combine the transactional model of stress and coping with the challenge and hindrance stressor framework. This study examined whether there is a linear or curvilinear relationship between supervisor bottom-line mentality (BLM), which emphasizes the pursuit of bottom-line results above all else, and the work performance of subordinates. Materials and Methods: A total of 284 two-wave dual-source survey data have been collected from an insurance company in China. Analysis was conducted in two steps. First, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was used to test the validity of scales. Second, hierarchical regression analysis was conducted to examine the hypotheses. Results: Results show that there has an inverted U-shaped (curvilinear) relationship between supervisor BLM and subordinate work performance. As the level of supervisor BLM increases from low to moderate, subordinate work performance increases; as the level of supervisor BLM increases from moderate to high, subordinate work performance decreases. Moreover, this study finds that the inverted U-shaped relationship between supervisor BLM and subordinates' work performance was stronger when subordinates have higher power distance orientation. Conclusion: Unlike previous studies which found a linear relationship between supervisor BLM and subordinate work performance, this study provided the first empirical examination of our hypothetical inverted U-shaped relationship of supervisor BLM impact on subordinate work performance. In addition, this study found that the relationship was stronger when subordinates had a higher power distance orientation.

BACKGROUND: Many prevention programmes for families focus parental adversities and adverse childhood experiences. Effects of such programmes are often examined in clinical trials; there is less research on effects under naturalistic conditions. The aim of this study was to examine the longitudinal association between parenting stress and child's negative emotionality, its modification through targeted prevention programmes, and to investigate the effects in the general population. METHODS: Data were taken from a sample of n = 903 families with infants (mean age: 13.3 months) who participated in a baseline study (T1) and a follow-up study (T2) 2 years later. The survey included parental self-report measurements on parenting stress and child's negative emotionality (T1 and T2 each) and targeted prevention programmes (T1 only). An autoregressive cross-lagged panel design was used to analyse the association of parenting stress and the child's negative emotionality, including use of targeted prevention programmes as moderator. We also tested if targeted prevention programmes can reduce parenting stress or child's negative emotionality using Propensity Score Matching (PSM). RESULTS: Parenting stress at T1 affected children's negative emotionality at T2, but children's negative emotionality at T1 did not affect parenting stress at T2. When targeted prevention was included as moderator, the correlation disappeared among programme users. With PSM, there was no direct effect on parenting stress or child's negative emotionality. But a subsample of parents with high parenting stress at T1 who used targeted prevention at T1 reported less child's negative emotionality problems at T2 than parents who scored high in parenting stress but did not receive targeted prevention at T1. CONCLUSION: Results suggest that the spillover from parenting stress to child's negative emotionality may be modified by prevention. Prevention programmes may help to build resources and have a direct positive effect on the child, especially for parents with high parenting stress.

The spread of COVID-19 and its subsequent social distancing policies have profoundly impacted the lives of parents and children. Prolonged exposure to parenting-related responsibilities and heightened levels of family conflict under stay-at-home orders coupled with reduced access to support systems and resources have rendered parents and children more prone to stress and mental health difficulties. Drawing on a transactional model of parent-child interactions, the present study applied an actor-partner interdependence model approach to examine the transactional relationship between COVID-19-related stress and mental well-being among parents and children. Data from 109 Chinese parent-child dyads in Hong Kong were included in the study. Parents and their 8- to 10-year-old children completed a questionnaire on COVID-19-related stress, parent-child relationships, and mental well-being. The results showed that 53.2% and 30.3% of the parents and children, respectively, showed poor mental well-being, indicating possible emotional problems. Both actor and partner effects of parent COVID-19-related stress were found. Parent COVID-19-related stress was indirectly related to lower levels of parent and child mental well-being, through the mediation of parent-child conflict. To facilitate psychological adjustment following the COVID-19 outbreak, effective family-based mental health and parenting interventions are needed to promote family cohesion and alleviate stress-induced psychological symptoms. Even in the time of social distancing, telepsychotherapy and other online non-psychotherapeutic interventions can serve as a valid alternative for parents and children who experience excessive distress. Implications for psychological services, family-friendly policies, and social protection measures are also discussed.

Employee strain is estimated to cost American companies as much as $500 billion in lost productivity annually, and a leading cause of workforce stress is disagreements with other people (Cook, 2017; Mental Health America, 2017). In this study, we investigate supervisor-subordinate value incongruence as a cause of employee strain. Specifically, this study examines the effect of supervisor-subordinate power distance orientation incongruence on the subordinate's job strain which, in turn, influences the subordinate's job performance. Using a sample of 172 supervisor-subordinate dyads, we find that incongruence on power distance orientation increases subordinate job strain. Supervisor-subordinate incongruence resulted in more job strain which, in turn, resulted in lower job performance. Results reveal that the alignment of subordinates' cultural values with those of their supervisors may mitigate negative experiences and facilitate more positive work outcomes.

In high-income countries, links between harsh and abusive parenting and child conduct and emotional problems are well-documented. However, less is known about these relationships in low- and middle-income countries, where harsh parenting may be more widely accepted and higher rates of conduct or emotional problems may exist which could influence the strength of these associations. We sought to investigate these relationships in a large population-based, prospective longitudinal study from Brazil, which also allowed us to test for sex differences. Using data from the 2004 Pelotas Birth Cohort Study (N = 4231) at ages 6 and 11 years, we applied cross-lagged path analysis to examine the relationships between harsh parenting (Conflict Tactics Scale Parent-Child version), and child conduct and emotional problems (Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire). We found reciprocal relationships between harsh parenting and child conduct problems, with harsh parenting at age 6 predicting child conduct problems at age 11, and vice versa, even after adjusting for initial levels of conduct problems and harsh parenting, respectively. For child emotional problems, only unidirectional effects were found, with harsh parenting at age 6 predicting child emotional problems at age 11, after adjusting for initial levels of emotional problems, but not vice versa. No significant sex differences were observed in these relationships. These observations based on a middle-income country birth cohort highlight the potential universality of detrimental effects of harsh parenting on child conduct and emotional problems and affirm the importance of addressing parent- and child-effects in preventive and treatment interventions, especially those targeting conduct problems.

Abstract Based on the importance of the stress phenomenon, this research sought to evaluate the relationship between stress, coping strategies, negative life events and biological markers, based on the Transactional Stress Model. A general hypothesis of mediation was formulated: coping strategies would mediate the relationship between negative life events and biological markers. The sample consisted of 96 users of a biomedical school laboratory, in which 77.78% were female. Participants answered the Brief COPE questionnaire, as well as a questionnaire on negative life events. Laboratory tests were collected shortly after the application of the questionnaires. Mediations were found between Venting, Red Blood Cells and Hemoglobin. The research aimed to contribute to the knowledge in the field of stress and coping, as well as to serve as a possible empirical study of the Transactional Stress model.


Resumo Dada a importância do fenômeno do estresse, esta pesquisa procurou avaliar a relação entre estresse, estratégias de enfrentamento, eventos negativos na vida e marcadores biológicos baseados no modelo transacional de estresse. A hipótese geral de mediação é que as estratégias de enfrentamento seriam mediadoras à relação entre eventos negativos na vida e os marcadores biológicos. A amostra consistiu de 96 usuários de um laboratório escola em que 77,78% eram mulheres. Participantes responderam ao questionário Brief-COPE, assim como o questionário de eventos negativos na vida. Os testes laboratoriais foram coletados logo após a aplicação dos questionários. As mediações foram encontradas entre auto-distração células vermelhas e hemoglobina. A pesquisa buscou contribuir com o conhecimento na área de estresse e estratégias de enfrentamento, assim como servir como estudo empírico do Modelo Transacional de Estresse.
