RESUMEN

In this study, we present the first representative complete Taphozous melanopogon mitochondrial genome from China. Its mitochondrial genome was assembled and annotated using MitoZ. The genome is a circular molecule of 16,566 bp in length, including 22 transfer RNA genes, 2 ribosomal RNA genes, 13 protein-coding genes, and a control region. Although maximum-likelihood and Bayesian inference phylogenetic trees indicate that the super family Emballonuridea forms a sister taxon with Noctilionidea instead of Vespertilionidea, mitochondrial genes provide only part of the phylogenetic information, and phylogenetic inferences utilizing nuclear genes are needed in future toward resolving phylogenetic relationship among Vespertilionidea, Noctilionidea, and Emballonuridea.

Chitinases are capable of hydrolyzing insoluble chitin into its oligo and monomeric parts and have received increased consideration because of their wide scope of biotechnological applications. The commercial application of microbial chitinase is appealing due to the relative ease of enormous production and to meet the current world demands. This study aimed at isolation and characterization of chitin degrading bacteria from the gut of Indian tropical insectivorous black-bearded tomb bat, Taphozous melanopogon. The isolated bacterial strains were characterized through biochemical analysis and nucleic acid-based approaches by 16S ribosomal RNA amplification and sequencing. The BLAST (Basic Local Alignment Search Tool) and phylogenetic analysis showed that the bacterial strain exhibited a close resemblance with Escherichia fergusonii. The chitinolytic activity of the E. fergusonii AMC01 was identified using supplemented colloidal chitin with agar medium. Compiling all, these findings would facilitate in constructing a database and presumably promote the use of E. fergusonii AMC01 as an efficient strain for the chitinase production.

RESUMEN

Rotavirus A (RVA) is the primary cause of acute dehydrating diarrhea in human and numerous animal species. Animal-to-human interspecies transmission is one of the evolutionary mechanisms driving rotavirus strain diversity in humans. We screened fresh feces from 416 bats (201 Pteropus medius, 165 Rousettus leschenaultii and 50 Taphozous melanopogon) for RVA using rRT-PCR. We detected a prevalence of 7% (95% CI 3.5-10.8) and 2% (95% CI 0.4-5.2) in P. medius and R. leschenaultii, respectively. We did not detect RVA in the insectivorous bat (T. melanopogon). We identified RVA strains similar to the human strains of G1 and G8 based on sequence-based genotyping, which underscores the importance of including wildlife species in surveillance for zoonotic pathogens to understand pathogen transmission and evolution better.
