RESUMEN
ABSTRACT Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the perception and degree of satisfaction of blind individuals regarding an electronic cane prototype with a wearable haptic interface. Methods: Two scenarios with different obstacles were created to conduct tests with the canes (the user's cane and the prototype one). The perception and satisfaction of participants regarding the electronic cane were assessed using a questionnaire, the number of collisions during the tests, and the time each individual took to complete the course in each scenario. Results: Ten blind individuals who used the white cane participated in this study. Eight were males, and two were females. Their age ranged from 23 to 43 (average 32.3 ± 7.13 years and median 32 years). There was a tendency for fewer collisions with ground obstacles when the electronic cane was used than when the white cane was used. However, there was no statistically significant difference between the number of collisions and the course completion time in each scenario with either canes tested. Conclusion: Overall, the perception and satisfaction of individuals regarding the prototype used were positive.
RESUMEN
The study of firearm violence in Mexico has primarily focused on homicides and trafficking. Less attention has been given to understanding how firearms affect other crimes and facilitate criminal activity beyond drug markets. By analyzing two questions, this study explores the role of firearms in extortions perpetrated in Mexico from 2012 to 2021. Questions are: What is the likelihood of reporting extortions to the police if offenders exhibited firearms? What is the likelihood of compliance with demands when offenders are armed with firearms? We obtained data from Mexico's National Crime Victimization Surveys and analyzed 2,619 extortions reported from 2012 to 2021. To explore our research questions, we ran two binary logistic regressions. Our dependent variables were dichotomous (reported to police = 1, complied with demands = 1). The independent variables were weapon types (extortions involving firearms as the reference group). We controlled for victim demographics as well as crime characteristics. Our results indicate that 40% of these extortions (n = 1,058) were perpetrated with a firearm. Fifty-two percent of extortions were perpetrated by unarmed offenders (n = 1,348) and 8% (n = 213) were perpetrated with other weapons (no firearms). Models suggest that, when compared to extortions perpetrated by unarmed offenders or those exhibiting other weapons (no firearms), victims of extortions involving firearms are less likely to report these crimes to police, mainly because of fear of reprisal. Similarly, victims are more likely to comply with demands if offenders exhibit firearms. Findings highlight the role of firearms in criminal enterprises and support the need for a comprehensive policy agenda to address firearm violence in Mexico.

Introduction. Dietary quality involves both the quantity and quality of food offered, the way and the setting in which it is offered, and the responses of the person offering it. The objective of this study was to identify behavioral patterns related to responsive feeding in children aged 6 to 23 months in urban areas from Argentina in 20182019. Population and methods. Secondary analysis based on data from the second National Survey on Nutrition and Health of 20182019 conducted in a multistage probability sample from urban areas of 5000 inhabitants or more in Argentina. A descriptive analysis and a principal component analysis were performed to identify responsive feeding patterns in 4379 children aged 6 to 23 months. Results. Five responsive feeding patterns were identified; the first 2 dimensions explained 71.1% of inertia (p = 0.013). The pattern with a prevailing possibility of experimentation, autonomy, interaction, and the absence of screens, rewards and distractions was associated with children older than 12 months from the central and south regions (Cuyo, Pampa, Greater Buenos Aires, and Patagonia), whereas the pattern related to a lower autonomy, experimentation, and self-regulation corresponded to children aged 6 to 11 months from the Northwest and Northeast regions. Conclusion. There is evidence of responsive feeding practices that correspond to distinguishable patterns, associated with different stages of life and with the region where the children live

INTRODUCTION: Physiotherapists provide non-pharmacological conservative treatment for osteoarthritis (OA) using a wide spectrum of interventions. Previous surveys have identified global physiotherapy OA management practices. However, no review to date summarises the scope and findings of these studies. This article describes a scoping review protocol to map the surveys investigating physiotherapeutic interventions offered to patients with OA to identify the treatment interventions currently used for OA, the physiotherapists' attributes and organisational practice factors potentially associated with the choice of these interventions and to detect knowledge-practice gaps in the provision of physiotherapeutic interventions in OA treatment, contributing to guiding future research on this topic. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: This is a protocol for a scoping review that will be based on Arksey and O'Malley scoping review methodology and the methodological guidance for conducting scoping reviews published by the Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI). Relevant articles will be searched using the following databases: Medline (PubMed), Embase, Web of Science and Google Scholar. Surveys studies addressing physiotherapeutic interventions offered to patients with OA will be included. Study will be selected through title/abstract and full-text screening stages and data will be extracted using an instrument based on the model available in the JBI Manual. The findings will be summarised using descriptive statistics according to our research questions. This review will be reported in accordance with the Preferred Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses for Scoping Reviews. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION: Ethical approval is not required for this scoping review. Review findings will be disseminated through peer-reviewed publications, scientific conference presentations and scientific meetings. STUDY REGISTRATION: This protocol has been registered with the Open Science Framework (DOI 10.17605/OSF.IO/J3RBT).

BACKGROUND: Telomere length has been investigated as a biomarker of biological aging and is associated with several diseases, lifestyle, and socioeconomic factors. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to verify whether food insecurity is associated with shorter telomere length in older people. METHODS: This is a cross-sectional study carried out in a municipality in the interior of Brazil, with a sample of 440 older people from the community. For telomere length analysis, a blood sample was obtained from each participant, followed by real-time qPCR, and sociodemographic and health information was collected through interviews. Food security/insecurity was measured using the reduced version of the Brazilian Food Insecurity Scale. Descriptive analysis and multiple logistic regression were performed to analyze the factors associated with shorter telomere length, adopting a significance level of 5%. RESULTS: We found that food insecurity was significantly associated with shorter telomere length, regardless of age group, skin color, tabagism, physical activity, milk and dairy consumption, living arrangement, and basic activities of daily life. CONCLUSION: The findings show the importance of ensuring full access to adequate nutrition for the older population, who are physiologically and socially vulnerable.
RESUMEN
INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: With rising prevalence of pre-sarcopenia in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD), this study aimed to develop and validate machine learning-based model to identify pre-sarcopenia in MASLD population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 571 MASLD subjects were screened from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2017-2018. This cohort was randomly divided into training set and internal testing set with a ratio of 7:3. Sixty-six MASLD subjects were collected from our institution as external validation set. Four binary classifiers, including Random Forest (RF), support vector machine, and extreme gradient boosting and logistic regression, were fitted to identify pre-sarcopenia. The best-performing model was further validated in external validation set. Model performance was assessed in terms of discrimination and calibration. Shapley Additive explanations were used for model interpretability. RESULTS: The pre-sarcopenia rate was 17.51 % and 15.16 % in NHANES cohort and external validation set, respectively. RF outperformed other models with area under receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.819 (95 %CI: 0.749, 0.889). When six top-ranking features were retained as per variable importance, including weight-adjusted waist, sex, race, creatinine, education and alkaline phosphatase, a final RF model reached an AUROC being 0.824 (0.737, 0.910) and 0.732 (95 %CI: 0.529, 0.936) in internal and external validation sets, respectively. The model robustness was proved in sensitivity analysis. The calibration curve and decision curve analysis confirmed a good calibration capacity and good clinical usage. CONCLUSIONS: This study proposed a user-friendly model using explainable machine learning algorithm to predict pre-sarcopenia in MASLD population. A web-based tool was provided to screening pre-sarcopenia in community and hospitalization settings.

RESUMEN
This cross-sectional study assessed the magnitude of inequalities in self-rated oral health (SROH) among different socioeconomic groups in Brazil. Secondary data from interviews with a sample of adults (≥18 years) from the national health survey 2013 (n = 64,308) and 2019 (n = 88,531) were analyzed. Positive SROH was considered when participants selected the good or very good options. Socioeconomic indicators were monthly household income and years of education. The magnitude of inequalities among socioeconomic groups was estimated using the Slope (SII) and Relative Index of Inequality (RII). Interaction term assessed changes in SII/RII over time. Estimates were adjusted for sex and age. The prevalence of SROH was 67.50% in 2013 and 69.68% in 2019. Individuals with lower socioeconomic indicators had a lower prevalence of positive SROH. Significant reductions in the magnitude of the education-based RII between 2013 (1.58) and 2019 (1.48) in Brazil, as well as in north (1.70; 1.45) and northeast (1.50; 1.41) regions and reduction in the income-based RII in the north (1.71; 1.51) were observed. Socioeconomic inequalities in SROH persist across different Brazilian regions, although there was a reduction in disparities among education groups in 2019 compared with 2013. The findings of this study suggest that equitable Brazilian oral health policies may have contributed to reducing SROH inequality over time.

Introduction The clinical manifestations of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) are different between genders. Though there are several screening questionnaires for OSA, their performance in females is not fully understood, as women have been historically underrepresented in research studies. Objective To assess the performance of screening questionnaires and their capacity to identify a moderate to severe apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) in women. Materials and Methods The Epworth sleep scale (ESS), Berlin questionnaire, and STOP-BANG questionnaire (SBQ) were correlated with AHI. Also, the sensitivity (S), specificity (Sp), and area under the receiver operating characteristic (AUC-ROC) curve were calculated for each questionnaire and combinations thereof. Multiple regression models were used to identify ≥15 ev/h AHI. Results Our study included 5,344 patients: 1978 women (37.1%) aged 55.06 ± 14 years with body mass index (BMI): 32.6 ± 8.30 kg/m 2 , ESS: 7.69 ± 5.2 points, and high-risk Berlin score: 87.25%. An AHI ≥15 ev/h was found in 30.4% of women. In terms of the capacity to identify an ≥15 ev/h AHI in women, the AUC-ROC of ESS >10 and high-risk Berlin was 0.53 and 0.58, respectively. Three components of SBQ in any combination showed: a S of 65.1% (95% CI: 61.2-68.9), a Sp: 61.5% (95% CI: 58.9-64.1), with the AUC-ROC: 0.67. Conclusions Questionnaires perform differently in women. Therefore, it is necessary to take a gender-specific approach. The SBQ showed a higher discriminative power and more specificity than the ESS and the Berlin questionnaire. The best performance was obtained with any combination of 3 SBQ components. Age, BMI, neck circumference, and hypertension were the strongest predictors.
RESUMEN
BACKGROUND: Exposure to domestic violence by triggering repetitive distress and fear can affect neurodevelopmental and mental health in the short and long term. This, in turn, has been linked to an increased risk of substance abuse, such as alcohol abuse in adulthood. OBJECTIVE: The present study aimed to evaluate the association between exposure to violence from the father toward the mother and alcohol abuse in Peruvian women. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. METHODS: We conducted a secondary analysis of data from the Peruvian Demographic and Family Health Survey (ENDES) of 2019. A total of 19,980 reproductive-aged women (15-49 years old) were surveyed using the Health Questionnaire during 2019. The dependent variable of the study was alcohol abuse, collected through self-report, according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, Fourth Edition (DSM-IV) criteria. Intimate partner violence (IPV; violence perpetrated by the father against the mother) was considered as the exposure variable. To assess the association of interest, we only considered observations with complete data and used binary logistic regression models, calculating crude odds ratios and adjusted odds ratios (aOR). For the multivariable model, we adjusted for confounding variables (age, marital status, education level, wealth index, ethnicity, residence, current smoker, depression, and IPV). RESULTS: We analyzed a final sample of 9953 women. The prevalence of interparental violence and alcohol abuse was 41.3% and 1.5%, respectively. We found that interparental violence was associated with higher odds of alcohol abuse (aOR: 2.10; 95% CI: 1.03-4.28) after adjusting for age, marital status, education level, wealth level, ethnicity, area of residence, current smoking, depression, and IPV. CONCLUSION: We identified that women of reproductive age who have been exposed to interparental violence were at higher odds of experiencing alcohol abuse issues.
Understanding the link between witnessing parental violence and alcohol abuse in Peruvian womenWitnessing violence between parents during childhood can leave deep emotional scars. This study explores whether such experiences are related to alcohol abuse among Peruvian women in their adult years. Using data from a national health survey in Peru, the experiences of nearly 20,000 women were analyzed to determine if witnessing violence between their parents during childhood was linked to alcohol problems later in life. Responses from the 2019 Peruvian Demographic and Family Health Survey were examined, focusing on women's reports of childhood exposure to violence between parents and current alcohol abuse, controlling for factors like age, education, and mental health. The study found that women who witnessed their parents engaging in violence were more likely to abuse alcohol as adults. About 41% of the women reported seeing such violence, and of these, a higher proportion struggled with alcohol compared to those who did not witness violence. Understanding the link between childhood experiences and adult behaviors can help develop targeted interventions to prevent alcohol abuse. This research highlights the need for support systems that help women cope with the emotional impacts of childhood trauma, potentially reducing alcohol-related problems in the future.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorders (TMD) are a highly misreported health problem. Its diagnosis is complex and requires the use of valid and reliable instruments. OBJECTIVE: To develop and validate the Epidemiological Diagnostic Instrument for TMD (EDI/TMD). METHODS: Content validity (CV), response process (RP), construct validity (EFA), reliability (inter and intraobserver consistency), and convergence validity of the EDI/TMD were assessed and compared to the Diagnostic Criteria for TMD (DC/TMD). RESULTS: An instrument composed of a 9-question questionnaire and a 12-step clinical protocol was developed. CV analysis reduced the instrument to a 5-question and 7-step clinical protocol (CVI = 0.93). Some instructions were included after the RP. The EFA found three factors: myogenous TMD, arthrogenous TMD, and differential diagnosis. The reliability scores ranged from substantial to excellent. When compared to the DC/TMD, the EDI/TMD total score indicated that this instrument is valid and provides satisfactory diagnostic criteria (Kappa = 0.906; p < 0.001), and can distinguish non-TMD and TMD individuals, with a cut-off point of 4.9 (Sensitivity = 1.0; Specificity = 1.0; AUC = 1.0). For individuals who had both myogenous and arthrogenous TMD, the cut-off point was 14 or higher (Sensitivity = 0.8; Specificity = 1.0; AUC = 0.987). For individuals who had either myogenous TMD (Sensitivity = 1.0; Specificity = 0.88; PPV = 0.89; NPV = 1.0) or arthrogenous TMD (Sensitivity = 0.95; Specificity = 0.87; PPV = 0.83; NPV = 0.96), the cut-off point was between 5 and 13.9, with the highest EFA score being the determinant factor for final diagnosis. CONCLUSION: Based on its psychometric properties, the EDI/TMD is a valid and reliable assessment tool that is capable of diagnosing TMD and classifying its subtypes.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVES: To estimate the coverage of newborn pulse oximetry screening (POS) in Brazil, as well as identifies associated factors and the proportion of positive screening results. METHODS: Coverage was estimated based on the most recent National Health Survey (2019). Adjusted marginal prevalence ratios were estimated via poisson regression model with robust variance. RESULTS: The POS coverage was 66.3 % (95 %CI: 65.5-67.1; N = 3,140,023) and was higher in children born in privately funded hospitals (PFHs) than in the Unified Health System (SUS): 78.1 % (76.7-79.5) versus 61.1 % (60.2-62.1). In the North region, the POS coverage in PFHs (64.9 %, 59.7-70.1) was lower than that in the South (82.5 %, 79.4-85.6) and the Southeast (81.5 %, 79.3-83.6); it was even lower in SUS in the North (44.0 %; 42.4-45.6). After a federal ordinance providing financial resources to postscreening diagnostic, the screening coverage in SUS increased from 57.6 % (56.2-59.1) to 64.6 % (63.3-65.9). The proportion of positive screening tests was 9.2 % (8.9-9.5) in SUS and 7.8 % (7.3-8.3) in PFHs, of which 40.8 % (40.5-41.1) underwent complementary exams in SUS and 57.2 % (56.7-57.7) in PFHs. In the multivariate model, the main independent predictors of POS were the coverage of other newborn screening tests. CONCLUSIONS: Inequalities were found between major regions and healthcare systems. Government financial incentives have reduced this inequality, although the percentage of postscreening complementary exams remains insufficient and unequal. The main independent predictors of screening prevalence were those related to the organization of health services.
RESUMEN
PURPOSE: To evaluate perceptions, attitudes, and clinical experience of Brazilian dental practitioners regarding molar incisor hypomineralisation (MIH). METHODS: An online survey with 27 questions, covering professional profile data, perceptions, and knowledge on clinical management of MIH, was employed. Descriptive analyses, chi-square, Fisher's exact, and Cramer's V tests were used. RESULTS: Sample comprised 100 participants, equally distributed between those working in private or public sectors. Most private sector practitioners had 21-30 years of clinical experience (28%) and master's degree (50%), while most public sector practitioners had 11-20 years of clinical experience (32%) and a PhD degree (32%). Most participants (86%) recognized MIH in their practice. Statistically significant differences were observed in frequency (p = 0.001), incidence (p = 0.039), and lesion type (p = 0.043) between practitioners from both sectors. Uncertainly in management was reported by 49%, mainly in public sector. For mild MIH in incisors, no treatment was chosen (43%), and the treatment longevity was the only significant factor reported (p = 0.012). In cases of mild MIH in first permanent molars (FPMs), 51% of respondents opted to keep the affected tissue and apply fissure sealant. Glass ionomer (GI) restoration was commonly indicated for FPMs with severe MIH with moderate loss of structure and sensitivity (38%). In cases with substantial structural loss and pulpal involvement, the most chosen treatment was endodontic intervention combined with preformed crowns. CONCLUSION: Brazilian dental practitioners face MIH in clinical practice. Although, public sector professionals are less confident in diagnosis and treatment, no significant differences in treatment preferences between public and private sector dental practitioners were identified.
RESUMEN
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of replacing time spent in sedentary behavior (SB) with moderate to vigorous physical activity on sleep quality in young adults. METHODS: Multicenter cross-sectional study, carried out with students enrolled in undergraduate courses at universities in Brazil. Sleep quality was assessed using a question of the World Health Organization Quality of Life (WHOQOL-brief) and classified as good or poor sleep quality. SB was evaluated by self-reported total sitting time, and the level of leisure-time PA was classified according to the intensity of moderate-intensity physical activity (MPA) and vigorous-intensity physical activity (VPA), which were assessed using a self-reported questionnaire. An isotemporal replacement logistic model was used to evaluate the effects of different SB, MPA, and VPA sessions on sleep quality. RESULTS: A total of 8,059 study participants were evaluated, the majority had poor sleep quality (64.79%), were physically inactive (48.28%, defined as practicing < 150 min of MPA or < 75 min of VPA per week), and spent ≥ 9 h/day in SB (55.08%). The multivariate model showed an association between non-adherence to wake-based movement guidelines and poor sleep quality, where those with one altered behavior were 43% more likely to have poor sleep quality (OR:1.43;95%CI:1.27 to 1.60), while individuals with two altered behaviors were 97% more likely (OR:1.97;95%CI:1.73 to 2.24). In the isotemporal analysis, replacing MPA and VPA with equivalent time in SB increased the odds of poor sleep at all times assessed, with peaks of 56% for MPA and 68% for VPA. CONCLUSION: The results of the present study indicate that replacing SB with the same amount of MPA or VPA may reduce poor sleep quality.

BACKGROUND: Self-perception of oral health is a recognized indicator, based on a single question. Association among oral health and socioeconomic status has been well established, however in Brazil, no results were found on the relation with type of insertion in labor market. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the prevalence of negative self-perception of oral health and associated factors, according to gender among Brazilian workers population, in 2019. METHODS: The National Health Survey, nationwide household-based survey, carried out in 2019, was used as source of data. Absolute and relative frequencies were calculated to understand the distribution of variables of interest and characterize the sample (nâ=â54,343). Binary logistic regression was used in the analyses. Odds ratio (OR) was estimated using a 95% confidence interval in bivariate and multivariate analyses. RESULTS: The prevalence of negative self-perception of oral health was 29.3%; in that, 31.0% among men and 27.2% among women. Compared to formal employees, the chance of negative self-perception of oral health among the informal workers was almost 20% higher among men and 13% among women after adjusting for all confounding factors. Unemployed women were 33% more likely to have negative self-perception of oral health. CONCLUSIONS: Self-reported unemployment increased the chance of a negative self-perception of oral health among women; however, the same effect was not observed among men. Why is there a difference? The association between informal work and negative SEOH is relevant in the Brazilian context of work deregulation and growth in the number of people without access to formal employment. The results suggested addressing employment conditions in adult oral health promotion actions, with emphasis on gender differences.
RESUMEN
Hybrid methods are a suitable option for extracting dietary patterns associated with health outcomes. This study aimed to identify the dietary patterns of Brazilian adults (20-59 years old; n = 28,153) related to dietary components associated with the risk of obesity. Data from the 2017-2018 Brazilian National Dietary Survey were analyzed. Food consumption was obtained through 24 h recall. Dietary patterns were extracted using partial least squares regression, using energy density (ED), percentage of total fat (%TF), and fiber density (FD) as response variables. In addition, 32 food groups were established as predictor variables in the model. The first dietary pattern, named as energy-dense and low-fiber (ED-LF), included with the positive factor loadings solid fats, breads, added-sugar beverages, fast foods, sauces, pasta, and cheeses, and negative factor loadings rice, beans, vegetables, water, and fruits (≥|0.15|). Higher adherence to the ED-LF dietary pattern was observed for individuals >40 years old from urban areas, in the highest income level, who were not on a diet, reported away-from-home food consumption, and having ≥1 snack/day. The dietary pattern characterized by a low intake of fruits, vegetables, and staple foods and a high intake of fast foods and sugar-sweetened beverages may contribute to the obesity scenario in Brazil.

BACKGROUND: Patient management in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) has evolved to a "treat-to-target" (T2T) approach, which entails intensive treatment and regular follow-up with the goal of achieving low levels of disease activity or clinical remission. Even though a T2T approach is endorsed by professional organizations and yields superior outcomes, its implementation remains incomplete. EVEREST (EleVatE care in RhEumatoid arthritiS with Treat-to-target) is a quality-improvement initiative designed to improve the widespread implementation of a personalized T2T strategy and enable patients with RA to reach their full potential for remission. We describe the Brazilian results from the Global T2T Survey, first part of the EVEREST program. METHODS: Between June and September 2022, we conducted an online survey targeting rheumatologists in Brazil. Our objective was to evaluate the barriers and knowledge gaps hindering the effective implementation of T2T strategies. To achieve this, we employed a set of multiple-choice questions specifically crafted to elicit responses categorized in a structured order. RESULTS: 166 rheumatologists participated in the survey, 51% of them with more than 21 years of experience in rheumatology. Regarding the perceived challenges in the management of RA in clinical practice, the highest percentage of agreement/strong agreement among the participants was related to the contradictory results of disease activity measures (60%). In terms of the main barriers to assess the disease activity in clinical practice, the lack of adherence to treatment and contradictory assessments between patient-reported outcomes and composite measures were indicated by 75% and 59% of the participants, respectively, as a moderate/serious barrier. The most frequently knowledge and skill gaps related to the management of RA pointed out by the participants were on the difficulty to assess patients' health literacy (54% stated to have no more than intermediate knowledge on standardized methods to assess it and 43% no more than intermediate skills on determining the level of health literacy of the patients). In general, the use of tools to support the management of RA patients in clinical practice was indicated to be unusual by the participants. Self-reflection questionnaires, patient education materials and treatment consideration checklists were pointed out as the least frequently used tools (85%, 64% and 62% of the participants stated to use them never, rarely, or only sometimes, respectively). CONCLUSIONS: Our findings indicate a greater need for design, selection, and uptake of practical strategies to further improve communication between healthcare providers and patients with RA, as well as for promoting well-informed, collaborative decision-making in their care.
