Nanotechnology has been increasingly used in plant sciences, with engineered nanoparticles showing promising results as fertilizers or pesticides. The present study compared the effects in the foliar application of Se nanoparticles (SeNPs) or sodium selenite-Se(IV) on rice seedlings. The degree of plant growth, photosynthetic pigment content, and concentrations of Se, Na, Mg, K, Ca, Mn, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb were evaluated. The results showed that the application of SeNPs at high concentrations (5 mg L-1), as well as the application of Se(IV), inhibited plant growth and increased the root concentrations of As and Pb. The application of SeNPs at 0.5 mg L-1 significantly increased Se accumulation in the aerial part from 0.161 ± 0.028 mg kg-1 to 0.836 ± 0.097 mg kg-1 without influencing physiological, chemical, or biochemical parameters. When applied to leaves, SeNPs tended to remain in the aerial part, while the application of Se(IV) caused a higher Se translocation from the shoots to the roots. This study provides useful information concerning the uptake, accumulation, and translocation of different Se formulations in rice seedlings and their effect on plant ionomic profiles, thus showing that the foliar application of SeNPs at low concentrations can be an effective and safe alternative for rice biofortification.

Deficient wound healing is frequently observed in patients diagnosed with diabetes, a clinical complication that compromises mobility and leads to limb amputation, decreasing patient autonomy and family lifestyle. Fibroblasts are crucial for secreting the extracellular matrix (ECM) to pave the wound site for endothelial and keratinocyte regeneration. The biosynthetic pathways involved in collagen production and crosslinking are intimately related to fibroblast redox homeostasis. In this study, two sets of human dermic fibroblasts were cultured in normal (5 mM) and high (25 mM)-glucose conditions in the presence of 1 µM selenium, as sodium selenite (inorganic) and the two selenium amino acids (organic), Se-cysteine and Se-methionine, for ten days. We investigated the ultrastructural changes in the secreted ECM induced by these conditions using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). In addition, we evaluated the redox impact of these three compounds by measuring the basal state and real-time responses of the thiol-based HyPer biosensor expressed in the cytoplasm of these fibroblasts. Our results indicate that selenium compound supplementation pushed the redox equilibrium towards a more oxidative tone in both sets of fibroblasts, and this effect was independent of the type of selenium. The kinetic analysis of biosensor responses allowed us to identify Se-cysteine as the only compound that simultaneously improved the sensitivity to oxidative stimuli and augmented the disulfide bond reduction rate in high-glucose-cultured fibroblasts. The redox response profiles showed no clear association with the ultrastructural changes observed in matrix fibers secreted by selenium-treated fibroblasts. However, we found that selenium supplementation improved the ECM secreted by high-glucose-cultured fibroblasts according to endothelial migration assessed with a wound healing assay. Direct application of sodium selenite and Se-cysteine on purified collagen fibers subjected to glycation also improved cellular migration, suggesting that these selenium compounds avoid the undesired effect of glycation.

Melasma is an acquired chronic condition characterized by hyperchromic patches in photo-exposed areas. The search for new compounds for the treatment of melasma without side effects is constant. In this context, the aim of this study was to investigate the in vitro cytotoxic and antimelanogenic effects of the trace elements Zinc (Zn) and Selenium (Se). In this study, we evaluated the effects of 30 µM hydroquinone, this concentration did not alter mitochondrial function (MTT assay), but increased the percentage of necrotic cells and levels of reactive species. Furthermore, it showed no influence on tyrosinase activity and melanin content. Unlike hydroquinone, exposure for 48 h to 100 µM Zn and 1 and 5 µM Se had no significant influence on the analysis of reactive species, as well as on the percentage of necrotic cells. Still, specifically in relation to 100 µM Zn, it decreased the melanin content. Given the above, the trace elements Zn and Se did not show toxicity at the concentrations tested and Zn showed a promising effect, however, the mechanism needs to be better explored in order to contribute to new and updated research in the fight against melasma with a perspective of therapeutic use.

Sodium selenite modulates the activity of lymphocytes. It negatively regulates the suppressive activity of cells and increases the immune response. In this study, we evaluated whether the regulatory T cell differentiation was modulated by sodium selenite. The percentages of CD4+CD25+Foxp3+, CD4+CD25+, and CD4+CTLA-4+ cells in CD4+ T cells cultures stimulated with IL-2 and TGF-ß in the presence or absence of selenium, in the form of sodium selenite (2.0×10-6M), were evaluated by flow cytometry. The mRNA expression of TET2/3 enzymes and IL-10 was analyzed by RT-qPCR and the levels of IL-10 were measured by an ELISA. We observed a decrease in CD4+CD25+Foxp3+ and CD4+CTLA-4+ cells in presence of selenium. However, normal percentages were reached again after selenium removal. An increase in CD4+CTL4-4+ cells was detected in selenium-primed cell cultures in absence of IL-2 and TGF-ß. In addition, we observed a decrease in TET3 in presence of selenium. Finally, we observed an augment in IL-10 transcription and protein levels and relative expression of TET2 in cultures exposed to selenium. We suggest that selenium reversibly affects the regulatory T cell differentiation in vitro. Likewise, selenium may modulate Treg percentages promoting optimal immune responses and, at the same time, the expression of specific suppressor molecules.

Mushrooms absorb minerals from substrates in which they are cultivated, so they could be used as vehicles of minerals that are deficient in human or animal diets, such as selenium. Selenium deficiency aggravates cardiovascular diseases, diabetes mellitus, and intestinal cancer. This work presents the latest discoveries related to the production of edible mushrooms in selenium-enriched substrates and discusses their use as an alternative to supply the deficiency of this mineral in human and animal diets. Selenized mushrooms and their derived extracts present bioaccessible and bioavailable forms of selenium, as antioxidant and antitumor activity, as demonstrated in various in vitro and in vivo experiments. Consequently, the consumption of these mushrooms reduces the levels of blood cholesterol and glucose. On the other hand, growing mushrooms in selenium-enriched substrates may alter the yield and their chemical composition, and this lack of standardization is still an obstacle to the scale up of the production process. On the other hand, the use of agro-industrial by-products as substrates can enable the cultivation of enriched edible mushrooms and their commercialization.

At the present time one of the tasks of modern agricultural industry consists in obtaining the ecologically safe and clean products. Contamination of soils with heavy metals due to an anthropogenic impact drives up their content in the composition of plant products. This shapes not only a reduction in crop yields, but also a deterioration in products quality. Within the terms of vegetation research in soil culture, there has been studied the protective and stimulating effect of sodium selenite upon the adaptive capacity of spring wheat plants of the variety Zlata under conditions of oxidative stress due to the soil contamination with cadmium. There has been studied the effect of different methods of sodium selenite application on the yield of spring wheat and the plants photosynthetic activity, depending on the level of soil contamination with cadmium. The object of research was a spring wheat variety Zlata. Plants have been cultivated in a greenhouse trial under soil culture conditions in Mitscherlich-vessels with a capacity of 6 kg of soil. Sod-podzolic soil has been used for research. Sodium selenite was introduced in three ways: pre-sowing seed treatment, foliar treatment of vegetative plants at the beginning of stage VI of organogenesis - the end of the tillering phase - the beginning of the stem-extension phase and the application of a salt solution into the soil when packing the vessels. The control samples represented variants without sodium selenite. To assess the plants photosynthetic productivity, there has been determined the chlorophyll content in plant leaves. The research results made it possible to determine the protective effect of sodium selenite on the adaptive capacity of plants under conditions of oxidative stress due to the soil contamination with cadmium. The increase in the adaptive capacity of plants manifested itself through the decrease in yield diminishing due to the improvement of conditions for fertile florets and ear initiations on the vegetative apex, as well as the development of flowers into grains, which contributed to increase in the grain content of the spike. The stimulating effect of selenium on the intensity of photosynthetic processes has been revealed, which showed not only the increase of chlorophylls content, but also the ratio changes of chlorophylls a and b.
Atualmente, uma das tarefas da indústria agrícola moderna consiste em obter produtos ecologicamente seguros e limpos. A contaminação dos solos com metais pesados devido ao impacto antrópico aumenta o seu conteúdo na composição dos produtos vegetais. Isto molda não apenas uma redução no rendimento das colheitas, mas a deterioração da qualidade dos produtos. No âmbito da investigação da vegetação em cultura do solo, estudou-se o efeito protetor e estimulante do selenito de sódio sobre a capacidade adaptativa de plantas de trigo de primavera da variedade Zlata em condições de stress oxidativo devido à contaminação do solo com cádmio. Tem sido estudado o efeito de diferentes métodos de aplicação de selenito de sódio na produtividade do trigo de primavera e na atividade fotossintética das plantas, dependendo do nível de contaminação do solo com cádmio. O objeto de pesquisa foi uma variedade de trigo de primavera Zlata. As plantas foram cultivadas em um teste de estufa sob condições de cultura do solo em vasos Mitscherlich com capacidade para 6 kg de solo. Solo sod-podzólico tem sido usado para pesquisa. O selenito de sódio foi introduzido de três maneiras: tratamento de sementes pré-semeadura, tratamento foliar de plantas vegetativas no início da fase VI da organogênese - final da fase de perfilhamento - início da fase de extensão do caule e aplicação de solução salina no solo ao embalar os vasos. As amostras de controle representaram variantes sem selenito de sódio. Para avaliar a produtividade fotossintética das plantas, determinou-se o teor de clorofila nas folhas das plantas. Os resultados da pesquisa permitiram determinar o efeito protetor do selenito de sódio sobre a capacidade adaptativa de plantas em condições de estresse oxidativo devido à contaminação do solo com cádmio. O aumento da capacidade adaptativa das plantas se manifestou pela diminuição do rendimento diminuindo devido à melhoria das condições para floretes férteis e iniciações de espigas no ápice vegetativo, bem como o desenvolvimento de flores em grãos, o que contribuiu para o aumento do grão conteúdo da espiga. O efeito estimulante do selênio na intensidade dos processos fotossintéticos foi revelado, o que mostrou não apenas o aumento do teor de clorofilas, mas também as mudanças na proporção de clorofilas a e b.

An experimental study was conducted to perform Comparative analysis of Selenium yeast with inorganic Se in broilers under heat stress. A total of 120 broilers chicks of one day were assigned to 4 groups each consisting 30 chicks fed on same basal diet but different selenium sources. The basal diet of group D1 was not supplemented with Se source (Negative control), group D2 basal diet was supplemented with inorganic selenium (Sodium selenite 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase), group D3 basal diet was supplemented with commercially available organic selenium (Seleno-methionine 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase) and group D4 basal diet was supplemented with self-developed organic selenium (Se-enriched yeast 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase). The performance parameters i.e. feed intake (FI), live body weight (BW) and FCR were not significantly (p>0.05) effected by selenium supplementation in the starter phase but were significantly (p<0.05) effected in the finisher phase. Selenium supplementation significantly (p<0.05) effected serum Se level in different supplemented groups. Higher serum Se value (58.20±0.06) was recorded in D4 group. Similarly significantly lower selenium value was recorded for D4 and higher was recorded for D1 (11.36±0.08). However lower serum Paraoxonase (PON) value was recorded for D4 (13.24±0.01) and higher for D1 (13.33±0.03). Comparatively self-developed Se enriched yeast increased the Se accumulation and improved antioxidant system. Birds fed on Se enriched yeast showed higher Se deposition and better antioxidant capacity as compared to other sources of selenium. Se-enriched yeast displayed an improved result on Se deposition in tissues, and oxidative capacity, meat tenderness and immune response level as compared to other sources of selenium.

Aves alimentadas com levedura enriquecida com Se apresentaram maior deposição de Se e melhor capacidade antioxidante em comparação com outras fontes de selênio. A levedura enriquecida com Se apresentou um resultado melhorado na deposição de Se nos tecidos, capacidade oxidativa, maciez da carne e nível de resposta imune em comparação com outras fontes de selênio.

The basal diet of group D1 was not supplemented with Se source (Negative control), group D2 basal diet was supplemented with inorganic selenium (Sodium selenite 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase), group D3 basal diet was supplemented with commercially available organic selenium (Seleno-methionine 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase) and group D4 basal diet was supplemented with self-developed organic selenium (Se-enriched yeast 0.22mg/Kg starter phase and 0.15mg/Kg finisher phase). The performance parameters i.e. feed intake (FI), live body weight (BW) and FCR were not significantly (p>0.05) effected by selenium supplementation in the starter phase but were significantly (p 0.05) effected in the finisher phase. Selenium supplementation significantly (p 0.05) effected serum Se level in different supplemented groups. Higher serum Se value (58.20±0.06) was recorded in D4 group. Similarly significantly lower selenium value was recorded for D4 and higher was recorded for D1 (11.36±0.08). However lower serum Paraoxonase (PON) value was recorded for D4 (13.24±0.01) and higher for D1 (13.33±0.03). Comparatively self-developed Se enriched yeast increased the Se accumulation and improved antioxidant system. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) was found higher in D4 (12.333±0.03) followed by D3, D2 and D1 respectively. Whereas superoxide dismutase (SOD) was significantly lower (p 0.05) in D4 (0.1437±0.003) followed by D3 (0.1457±0.002). Selenium supplementation increased the birds survival rate. Birds fed on Se enriched yeast showed higher Se deposition and better antioxidant capacity as compared to other sources of selenium. Se-enriched yeast displayed an improved result on Se deposition in tissues, and oxidative capacity, meat tenderness and immune response level as compared to other sources of selenium.
Resumo A suplementação de probióticos enriquecidos com selênio é eficaz na redução do estresse oxidativo e na manutenção da estabilidade da qualidade da carne em frangos de corte, especialmente sob estresse por calor. Um estudo experimental foi conduzido para realizar uma análise comparativa da levedura selênio com o Se inorgânico em frangos de corte sob estresse térmico. Um total de 120 pintos de um dia foi dividido em 4 grupos, cada um consistindo de 30 pintos alimentados com a mesma dieta basal, mas com diferentes fontes de selênio. A dieta basal do grupo D1 não foi suplementada com fonte de Se (controle negativo), a dieta basal do grupo D2 foi suplementada com selênio inorgânico (selenito de sódio 0,22 mg / kg fase inicial e 0,15 mg / kg fase finalizadora), a dieta basal do grupo D3 foi suplementada com selênio orgânico disponível comercialmente (fase inicial de seleno-metionina 0,22 mg / kg e fase finalizadora de 0,15 mg / kg) e a dieta basal do grupo D4 foi suplementada com selênio orgânico autodesenvolvido (fermento enriquecido com Se 0,22 mg / kg fase inicial e 0,15 mg / kg fase finalizadora). Os parâmetros de desempenho, ou seja, consumo de ração (FI), peso corporal vivo (PC) e FCR não foram significativamente (p > 0,05) afetados pela suplementação de selênio na fase inicial, mas foram significativamente (p 0,05) afetados na fase final. A suplementação de selênio afetou significativamente (p 0,05) o nível de Se sérico em diferentes grupos suplementados. O maior valor de Se sérico (58,20 ± 0,06) foi registrado no grupo D4. Da mesma forma, valor de selênio significativamente menor foi registrado para D4 e maior foi registrado para D1 (11,36 ± 0,08). No entanto, um valor mais baixo de Paraoxonase (PON) sérica foi registrado para D4 (13,24 ± 0,01) e mais alto para D1 (13,33 ± 0,03). A levedura enriquecida com Se comparativamente autodesenvolvida aumentou o acúmulo de Se e melhorou o sistema antioxidante. A glutationa peroxidase (GPx) foi encontrada maior em D4 (12,333 ± 0,03) seguido por D3, D2 e D1 respectivamente. Enquanto a superóxido dismutase (SOD) foi significativamente menor (p 0,05) em D4 (0,1437 ± 0,003) seguido por D3 (0,1457 ± 0,002). A suplementação de selênio aumentou a taxa de sobrevivência da ave. Aves alimentadas com levedura enriquecida com Se apresentaram maior deposição de Se e melhor capacidade antioxidante em comparação com outras fontes de selênio. A levedura enriquecida com Se apresentou um resultado melhorado na deposição de Se nos tecidos, capacidade oxidativa, maciez da carne e nível de resposta imune em comparação com outras fontes de selênio.
RESUMEN
The oxidative stress caused by systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS), septic shock, and sepsis, is a risk factor triggering an increase in mortality in patients diagnosed with these pathologies. Selenium (Se) is an essential mineral that has antioxidant and cytoprotective functions, being strongly associated with the proper functioning of intracellular metabolic processes. In this context, the present study aims to investigate de therapeutic effects of intravenous selenium use considering pathologies such as SIRS, septic shock, sepsis, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), ventilator associated pneumonia (VAP), and coronavirus disease (COVID-19). This is an narrative literature review in which six main articles found in databases of SciELO, PubMed, and Google Scholar, were selected and analyzed. As a result, articles were found evidencing the benefit of Se in the inflammatory response, increasing the GPx-3 activity and decreasing the inflammatory cytokines, in addition to generating a lower risk of VAP, shortening the hospitalization time, and mortality. Thus, Se supplementation has beneficial evidence for acute respiratory diseases and should be considered as a viable option as adjuvant therapy.

In 2017-2019, we conducted the field and vegetation experiments at the field station of Russian State Agrarian University, Moscow Timiryazev Agricultural Academy to study the effect of sodium selenite on the yield and grain quality indicators of white lupine, Dega variety, and spring wheat, Yubileynaya-80 variety. The best way found to use selenium is to spray vegetative plants with 0.01% aqueous sodium selenite solution. The studies have shown an increase in grain yield by 15-17%, crude protein content by 9-15% and crude fat content by 5-7% when treated with sodium selenite. The obtained grain yield of white lupine has a higher feed and nutritional value and is suitable for feeding animals and preparing various types of feed and feed additives. The optimal way to use selenium is spraying vegetative plants before shooting. Treatment with sodium selenite contributes to an increase in wheat yield by 1.5 times. We have established the positive effect of sodium selenite on the quality indicators of wheat grain. An increase in the content of raw gluten and glassiness of grain has been noted, which determines high bread-making qualities.
Em 2017-2019, conduzimos os experimentos de campo e vegetação na estação de campo da Universidade Agrária Estatal Russa, Academia Agrícola Timiryazev de Moscou, para estudar o efeito do selenito de sódio nos indicadores de rendimento e qualidade de grãos de tremoço branco, variedade Dega, e trigo de primavera, variedade Yubileynaya-80. A melhor maneira encontrada para usar o selênio é pulverizar as plantas vegetativas com solução aquosa de selenito de sódio a 0,01%. Os estudos mostraram um aumento no rendimento de grãos em 15-17%, teor de proteína bruta em 9-15% e teor de gordura bruta em 5-7% quando tratados com selenito de sódio. O rendimento de grãos obtido de tremoço branco tem maior valor alimentar e nutricional e é adequado para alimentação de animais e preparação de vários tipos de rações e aditivos alimentares. A maneira ideal de usar o selênio é pulverizar plantas vegetativas antes de fotografar. O tratamento com selenito de sódio contribui para um aumento no rendimento do trigo em 1,5 vez. Estabelecemos o efeito positivo do selenito de sódio nos indicadores de qualidade do grão de trigo. Observou-se um aumento no teor de glúten cru e vítreo do grão, o que determina altas qualidades de panificação.

BACKGORUND: Cowpea is a crop widely used in developing countries due its rusticity. Besides its rich genotypic variability, most breeding programs do not explore its potential to improve elements uptake. Selenium (Se) is a scarce element in most soils, resulting in its deficiency being common in human diets. This study aimed to evaluate the interaction between biofortification with Se and genotypic variation in cowpea, on the concentrations of Se in roots, leaves + stem and grains. METHODS: Twenty-nine cowpea genotypes were grown in a greenhouse in the absence (control) and presence of Se (12.5 µg Se kg-1 soil) as sodium selenate, in fully randomized scheme. The plants were cultivated until grains harvest. The following variables were determined: roots dry weight (g), leaves + stems dry weight (g), grains dry weight (g), Se concentration (mg kg-1) in roots, leaves + stems and grains, and Se partitioning to shoots and grains. RESULTS: Selenium application increased the Se concentration in roots, leaves + stems and grains in all genotypes. At least twofold variation in grain Se concentration was observed among genotypes. Selenium application did not impair biomass accumulation, including grain dry weight. Genotype "BRS Guariba" had the largest Se concentration in grains and leaves + stems. Genotype MNC04-795 F-158 had the largest partitioning of Se to shoots and grain, due to elevated dry weights of leaves + stems and grain, and high Se concentrations in these tissues. CONCLUSION: This information might be valuable in future breeding programs to select for genotypes with better abilities to accumulate Se in grain to reduce widespread human Se undernutrition.

KEY MESSAGE: The effects of selenium in rice grain composition depend on the soil nitrogen supply. Selenium and nitrogen have the potential to modify rice grain composition; however, it is unclear how the combined effect of Se and nitrogen affects the grain nutritional quality of rice. In our study, grain Se concentration was positively associated with the increased availability of nitrogen in soil. The accumulation of Se in grain of rice plants treated with Se combined with nitrogen was accompanied by an increase in expression of NRT1.1B, a rice nitrate transporter and sensor, in root. Moreover, Se potentiates the response of nitrogen supply in expression of sulfate transporter OsSULTR1.2, phosphate transporter OsPT2 and silicon transporter OsNIP2.1 in root, thereby increasing root Se uptake capacity. The combination of Se with high nitrogen increased the concentrations of protein, carbohydrates, Se, Mo and Mg, but decreased concentrations of Fe, Mn, Cu and Zn in grain. Overall, our results revealed that many of the effects of Se in rice grain composition are due to a shift in the nitrogen status of the plant.

Selenium (Se) is a beneficial element to higher plants. Application of Se at low concentrations enhances the antioxidant metabolism reducing the reactive oxygen species (ROS) generated by plant membrane cells. This study aimed to evaluate how the application of Se in the forms sodium selenate and sodium selenite regulates ROS scavenging in field-grown cowpea plants. Seven Se application rates (0; 2.5; 5; 10; 20; 40 and 60 g ha-1) of each of the two Se forms were applied to plants via the soil. Photosynthetic pigments concentration, gas exchange parameters, lipid peroxidation by malondialdehyde (MDA) concentration, hydrogen peroxide concentration, activity of catalase (CAT, EC:1.11.1.6), glutathione reductase (GR, EC:1.6.4.2), ascorbate peroxidase (APX, EC:1.11.1.11) and Se concentration in leaves and grains were evaluated. In general, Se application led to a decrease in chlorophyll a concentration whilst leading to an increase in chlorophyll b, indicating conservation of total chlorophyll concentration. Application of 2.5 g ha-1 of Se as selenate provided a notable increase in total chlorophyll and total carotenoids compared to the other application rates. Selenate and selenite application decreased lipid peroxidation. However, each Se source acted in a different pathway to combat ROS. While selenate showed more potential to increase activity of APX and GR, selenite showed a higher potential to increase CAT activity. The negative correlation between CAT and GR is indicative that both pathways might be activated under distinct circumstances. The more prominent activity of CAT under high rates of selenite resulted in a negative correlation of this enzyme with chlorophyll a and carotenoids. Both selenate and selenite application increased sucrose and total sugars concentration in leaves of cowpea plants. Overall, these results indicate that application of Se in cowpea under field conditions stimulates distinct pathways to scavenge ROS. This could prove beneficial to mitigate oxidative stress during plant development.

The objective of the study was to evaluate the deposition of selenium in the breast muscle of broilers fed different selenium sources during different periods. Two experiments were carried out with broilers fed 45% sodium selenite (SS) or 2% hydroxy-selenomethionine (HSM) to determine the selenium deposition rate in the muscle tissue. In Experiment 1, 48 broilers were distributed in a completely randomized design with six treatments with eight replicates each, consisting of diets containing 0 Se (0), 200 or 400 µgSS/kg (200 SS, 400 SS), or 100, 200, or 300 µgHSM/kg (100 HSM, 200 HSM, 300 HSM) for 10 days. The highest Se breast content was obtained with 300 HSM diet, followed by 200 SS diet compared to the other treatments. Experiment 2 had a completely randomized design following a plot scheme subdivided in time, and consisted of a basal diet supplemented with 300 µg SS/kg (300 SS), basal diet with 200 µg HSM/kg (200 HSM) or basal diet supplemented with 100 µgSS/kg and 100 µgHSM/kg (100 SS+100 HSM). Dietary Se sources did not influence Se breast content measured on days 3 and 6. However, on days 9 and 12, higher Se breast contents were measured in broilers fed 200 HSM and 100 SS+100 HSM diets compared with those fed 300 SS diet. In conclusion, the supplementation of broiler diets with HSM at 2% for a short period is more efficient to increase selenium deposition in the breast muscle than sodium selenite.

Abstract From the advancement of tilapia production in recent years, diets are sought that allow the maximum growth, improving health and fish quality. In this study growth, biochemical, hematological and oxidative parameters were evaluated of tilapia fed with increasing selenium levels: 0.53, 0.86, 1.04 and 1.22 mg kg-1. It was used 400 juveniles (initial weight = 36.51 ± 10.88 g), fed for six weeks. There was no effect of selenium on fish growth, biochemical and hematological parameters. In the oxidative parameters, there was an increase in non-protein thiols and a decrease in malondialdehyde levels, evidencing antioxidant effects of selenium. The diet selenium levels above 0.86 mg kg-1 improved the antioxidant system and does not affect to biochemical, hematological and growth parameters of tilapia juveniles.
Resumo Com o avanço da produção de tilápia nos últimos anos, buscam-se dietas que possibilitem o máximo crescimento, saúde e qualidade do pescado. Neste trabalho foram avaliados parâmetros de crescimento, bioquímicos, sanguíneos e oxidativos de tilápias alimentadas com níveis crescentes de selênio: 0,53, 0,86, 1,04 e 1,22 mg kg-1. Foram utilizados 400 juvenis (peso inicial =36,51 ± 10,88 g), alimentados durante seis semanas. Não ocorreu efeito do selênio no crescimento, nem nos parâmetros bioquímicos e hematológicos dos peixes. Nos parâmetros oxidativos, ocorreu aumento nos níveis de tióis não-proteicos e diminuição de malondialdeído, evidenciando efeitos antioxidantes do selênio. Os níveis de selênio acima de 0.86 mg kg-1 melhoram o sistema antioxidante dos peixes e não compromete os parâmetros bioquímicos, sanguíneos e de crescimento de juvenis de tilápia.

MAIN CONCLUSION: Selenium modulates the formation of primary and lateral roots through alterations in auxin and ethylene, leading to new patterns of root architecture in rice seedlings. Selenium (Se) at low concentrations can control root growth through interaction with hormone biosynthesis. Auxin and ethylene have been shown to control the root architecture, with most of the information obtained from the eudicots such Arabidopsis and Nicotiana tabacum. Here, we presented the effects of Se on auxin and ethylene pathways and examined their impact on primary metabolism and root system architecture in rice (Oryza sativa L.) seedlings. Se treatment increased elongation of primary root, but decreased the number and length of lateral roots. Se led to decreased expression of genes associated with the biosynthesis of auxin and ethylene, concomitantly with reduced production of these hormones by the roots. Moreover, Se decreased the abundance of transcripts encoding auxin transport proteins. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) treatment overrode the repressive effect of Se on lateral root growth. The ethylene synthesis inhibitor L-α-(2-aminoethoxyvinyl)-glycine (AVG) increased elongation of primary root, whereas the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) resulted in the opposite effect. Soluble sugars accumulate in roots of rice seedlings under Se treatment. Thus, Se modulates the formation of primary and lateral roots through alterations in auxin and ethylene, leading to new patterns of root architecture in rice seedlings.

Selenium (Se) is an essential trace element for humans; its intake is needed to allow the proper synthesis of 25 different selenoproteins that are necessary to the normal functioning of several organs, including the brain. Accordingly, decreased Se levels have been associated with neurological disorders. In the present study, we investigated the potential beneficial effects of Se, as sodium selenite, against 3-nitropropionic acid (3-NP)-induced oxidative stress in primary cultures of mouse cortical neurons. 3-NP treatment caused a significant decrease in cellular viability, which was accompanied by decreases in mitochondrial complex II activity and reduced glutathione (GSH) content, as well as increases in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and oxidized glutathione (GSSG) levels. Sodium selenite pretreatment (6 days) attenuated 3-NP-induced decrease in cell viability. In addition, sodium selenite pretreatment significantly protected against 3-NP-induced increase in ROS generation and decrease in GSH/GSSG ratio. Of note, sodium selenite pretreatment did not change 3-NP-induced decrease of mitochondrial complex II activity, suggesting that Se modulates secondary events resultant from 3-NP-induced mitochondrial dyshomeostasis. In addition, sodium selenite pretreatment significantly increased glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity. Our data provide insights into the mechanism of protection by sodium selenite, which is related, at least in part, to GPx induction.
