RESUMEN

The genitourinary microbiome plays a crucial role in the establishment and maintenance of urinary and reproductive health in women throughout their lives. Particularly during the reproductive stage, resident microorganisms contribute to implantation and protect against perinatal complications, including preterm birth, stillbirth, and low birth weight, while also serving as the first line of defense against pathogens that can cause infections, such as urinary tract infections and bacterial vaginosis. This review aimed to elucidate the relationship between a healthy microbiome environment and women's overall health. We examine the variability and dynamics of the microbiome during different developmental stages, ranging from the prepubertal to the postmenopausal stage. Furthermore, we explore the significance of a healthy microbiota in successful implantation and pregnancy development and investigate potential differences between women experiencing infertility. In addition, we analyze the local and systemic inflammatory responses associated with the establishment of a dysbiotic state and compare it to a condition where a healthy microbiome was established. Lastly, we present the most recent evidence regarding preventive measures, such as dietary interventions and the use of probiotics to promote and maintain a healthy microbiome, thereby ensuring comprehensive women's health. By highlighting the importance of the genitourinary microbiome in reproductive health, this review aimed to enhance this microbiome's visibility and significance in the field.

RESUMEN

Oysters are frequently used as sentinel organisms for monitoring effects of contaminants due to their sessile, filtering habits and bioaccumulation capacity. These animals can show elevated body burden of contaminants, such as pyrene (PYR). PYR can be toxic at a molecular level until the whole oyster, which can show reproductive and behavioral changes. Considering that biologic parameters, such as gender or reproductive stage can interfere in the toxic effects elicited by contaminants uptake, the aim of this study was to evaluate some molecular and histological responses in females and males of oyster Crassostrea gasar exposed to PYR (0.25 and 0.5 µM) for 24 h at the pre-spawning stage. PYR concentrations were analyzed in water and in tissues of female and male oysters. Gene transcripts related to biotransformation (CYP3475C, CYP2-like, CYP2AU1, CYP356A, GSTO-like, GSTM-like, SULT-like), stress (HSP70), and reproduction (Vitellogenin, Glycoprotein) were quantified in gills. In addition, histological analysis and histo-localization of CYP2AU1 mRNA transcripts in gills, mantle and digestive diverticulum were carried out. Females and males in pre-spawning stage bioconcentrated PYR in their tissues. Males were more sensitive to PYR exposure. CYP2AU1 transcripts were higher in males (p < 0.05), as well as tubular atrophy was observed only in males exposed to PYR (p < 0.05). As expected, vitellogenin transcripts were lower in males (p < 0.05). Given these results, it is suggested that levels of CYP2AU1 be a good biomarker of exposure to PYR in oyster C. gasar and that it is important to consider the gender for the interpretation of biomarker responses.

RESUMEN

Sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) is today the third leading oilseed crop in the world and seed yield is a valuable trait for breeders and researchers. The sunflower capitulum is composed of 700 to 3000 individual flowers on a flattered receptacle. Most reproductive stages (R5 to R6) have at least two disc flower phenophase's coexisting in the same receptacle (E1 to E4). Today, researchers in agroecology and breeders manually quantify the number of disc flowers that achieve the anthesis at different developmental stages of the receptacle. The presented method applies a bioinformatic tool to estimate: (1) the number of disc flowers of each phenophase that are constituting the sunflower´s capitula at different reproductive stages and, (2) the number of developing seeds of each sunflower capitulum. The ImageJ software was used as an image-analysis tool on sunflower capitula photographs. A use case and method validation for each presented protocol is provided. This method will contribute to correlation analysis in agroecological studies and also would be useful for the early prediction of seed yield in breeding programs.•This is a simple method for the estimation of the number of disc flowers at each phenophase in the sunflower receptacle.•It is based on integrating the knowledge of sunflower reproductive development with an open-source image analysis platform applied in single workflows.•This is a precise, non-destructive, rapid, and low-cost method; thus, it has the potential to be adopted as a phenotyping tool for sunflower breeding and research in agroecology.

RESUMEN

Understanding the genetic basis of cold tolerance is a key step towards obtaining new and improved crop varieties. Current geographical distribution of durum wheat in Argentina exposes the plants to frost damage when spikes have already emerged. Biochemical pathways involved in cold tolerance are known to be early activated at above freezing temperatures. In this study we reported the transcriptome of CBW0101 spring durum wheat by merging data from untreated control and cold (5 °C) treated plant samples at reproductive stage. A total of 128,804 unigenes were predicted. Near 62% of the unigenes were annotated in at least one database. In total 876 unigenes were differentially expressed (DEGs), 562 were up-regulated and 314 down-regulated in treated samples. DEGs are involved in many critical processes including, photosynthetic activity, lipid and carbohydrate synthesis and accumulation of amino acids and seed proteins. Twenty-eight transcription factors (TFs) belonging to 14 families resulted differentially expressed from which eight families comprised of only TFs induced by cold. We also found 31 differentially expressed Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), most of them up-regulated in treated plants. Two of these lncRNAs could operate via microRNAs (miRNAs) target mimic. Our results suggest a reprogramming of expression patterns in CBW0101 that affects a number of genes that is closer to the number reported in winter genotypes. These observations could partially explain its moderate tolerance (low proportion of frost-damaged spikes) when exposed to freezing days in the field.

RESUMEN

This study aimed to analyze the reproductive stage, histology and morphometry of the ovary of Dermanura cinerea in an Atlantic Forest fragments in the Biological Reserve of Saltinho, Pernambuco, Brazil. Adult females were captured monthly by mist net, during two consecutive nights from June/2014 to November/2015. The meteorological data were provided by the National Institute of Meteorology and grouped together with the reproductive data, in six periods: period I (June to August/2014), period II (September to November/2014), period III (December/2014 to February/2015), period IV (March to May/2015), period V (June to August/2015) and period VI (September to November/2015). The females were classified according to their reproductive stages in: Inactive, pregnant, lactating and postlactating. Among the 25 females caught, 10 inactive females were selected for the histomorphometric analysis of the ovaries and then they were euthanized. After that, the specimens had their ovaries removed, fixed, processed and included in Paraplast. The organs were cut and stained by Hematoxylin - Eosin and the histological slides produced were submitted to the appropriate optical microscope analysis. Each type of ovarian follicle was estimated according to the histological characteristics evidenced for other mammals. In the morphometric analysis, it was considered: The area of the ovary (measured in square millimeter), Quantification of different types of ovarian follicles (unilaminar and multilaminar primary follicles, antral and matures) and corpus luteum, as well as the area of each by those different follicles (measured in square micrometer) The results indicated that 16 females were inactive, 5 were lactating, 4 were pregnant and no post-lactating. The histological analysis revealed that the ovaries of D. cinerea exhibit characteristics, structures and cellular types similar to other mammals...(AU)

RESUMEN

We evaluated the yields of Oryza sativa L. 'Nipponbare' rice lines expressing a gene encoding an A20/AN1 domain stress-associated protein, AlSAP, from the halophyte grass Aeluropus littoralis under the control of different promoters. Three independent field trials were conducted, with drought imposed at the reproductive stage. In all trials, the two transgenic lines, RN5 and RN6, consistently out-performed non-transgenic (NT) and wild-type (WT) controls, providing 50-90% increases in grain yield (GY). Enhancement of tillering and panicle fertility contributed to this improved GY under drought. In contrast with physiological records collected during previous greenhouse dry-down experiments, where drought was imposed at the early tillering stage, we did not observe significant differences in photosynthetic parameters, leaf water potential, or accumulation of antioxidants in flag leaves of AlSAP-lines subjected to drought at flowering. However, AlSAP expression alleviated leaf rolling and leaf drying induced by drought, resulting in increased accumulation of green biomass. Therefore, the observed enhanced performance of the AlSAP-lines subjected to drought at the reproductive stage can be tentatively ascribed to a primed status of the transgenic plants, resulting from a higher accumulation of biomass during vegetative growth, allowing reserve remobilization and maintenance of productive tillering and grain filling. Under irrigated conditions, the overall performance of AlSAP-lines was comparable with, or even significantly better than, the NT and WT controls. Thus, AlSAP expression inflicted no penalty on rice yields under optimal growth conditions. Our results support the use of AlSAP transgenics to reduce rice GY losses under drought conditions.

RESUMEN

We evaluated the grazing behavior of heifers, at two phenological stages (vegetative and reproductive) of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), in four times of the day (early morning, morning, evening, and night), with heifers either exclusively grazing or with oat, or corn grain, supplementation. The experimental design was completely randomized, in sub-subdivided plot arrangement, in which the main plots were the feeding systems, the sub-plots were the phenological stages and the sub-sub-plots were the times of day. We assessed ingestion behavior along 24 hours through visual observation, on four evaluation dates, two during the vegetative stage and two during the reproductive stage, studying time spent on grazing, rumination, or other activities, as well as number and duration of, and interval between meals. Supplemented heifers remained less time at a feeding station, performed fewer bites daily and, during the reproductive stage of the ryegrass, spent more time in other activities. Grazing time of supplemented heifers was shorter in the morning and at night, and the duration of their meals was shorter at night. A change occurred in the pattern of time use when heifers received supplement, and when the structural and qualitative characteristics of the pasture changed during the vegetative and reproductive phenological stages of ryegrass.

O padrão do uso

RESUMEN

The bitch has reproductive peculiarities that differentiate it from other species. Several experiments have been conducted to establish efficient protocols for maturation; however, the results appear to be unsatisfactory. In this respect, the reproductive female donor should be considered, since it can be a factor of variability of findings in this species. The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship between the estrous cycle phases phase diestrus and anestrus on canine oocyte in vitro maturation (IVM). The ovaries were transported in sodium chloride 0.9% solution, and were cut into phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and the cumulus-oocyte complexes (COCs) selected in tissue culture medium (TCM), supplemented with 199 HEPES. A total of 469 grade 1 oocytes were collected from bitches in anestrus and diestrus. These selected oocytes were transferred to the maturation medium for a period of 72 hours, then subjected to hyaluronidase solution and stained with Hoechst 33342 to assess nuclear configuration. The comparison of anestrus and diestrus phase showed no differences (p > 0.05) between the nuclear maturation stages. Thus, the phase of the estrous cycle did not influence the in vitro maturation of canine oocytes, increasing the rates of M-II in this species.

Thus, the phase of the estrous cycle did not influence the in vitro maturation of canine oocytes, increasing the rates of M-II in this species.(AU)

This trial was carried out to study the chemical composition and total DM losses of soybean silage at different reproductive stages. The work was divided in two evaluation periods: the 2005 and 2006 harvests. Four reproductive stages were determined (R3, R4, R5 and R6) as treatments in trial I (2005) and three reproductive stages (R5, R6 and R7) in trial II (2006). The material was conditioned in PVC experimental silos, and the samples were taken at the time the silo was opened (60 days after ensilage) to evaluate the chemical composition. In trial I, there were differences (p 0.05) for NDF, ADF, NDIN, ADIN, CELL, total carbohydrate and pH. In trial II, the silages did not present differences (p > 0.05) for DM, ash, OM, CP, NDF, ADF, EE and total carbohydrate in function of the soybean harvest stage. The pH values, electric conductivity and buffering capacity of the silages were different (p < 0.05) among the reproductive stages. The advance of reproductive stage changes the nutritional value of whole-plant soybean silage. The water deficit adversely affects the suitable development of soybeans, where the protein value of silage is penalized.

RESUMEN

The aïm of this study was to describe the effects of reproductive stages (pre-pubertal, non-pregnant and pregnant adult animals), ovarian anatomic position (left or right), presence of functional corpus luteum, ovarian weight and number of superficial antral follicles on the number of preantral follicles mechanically isolated. The mean number (mean ± SEM) of isolated preantral follicles per ovary was 1,324 ± 193, 866 ±170 and 779 ± 139, respectively for prepubertal, non-pregnant and pregnant adult animals. Anatomic position (except for nonpregnant animals) and the presence or absence of corpus luteum dia nof affect the number and distribution of isolated preantral follicles. In general, the number of primary and secondary follicles was negatively correlated with the ovarian weight. The numbers of primordial and secondary follicles were, respectively, positively and negatively correlated with the number of superficial antral follicles. Analyzing animal categories separately, it was observed that in prepurbetal animals, the number of primordial follicles was positively correlated with the number of superficial antral follicles. However the numbers of primary and secondary follicles were negatively correlated with the number of superficial antral follicles. In the category of pregnant animals, the number of primary follicles was negatively correlated with the ovarian weight. According to ovary category analyzed, were observed significant correlation between the number of primordial, primary and secondary isolated follicles.
