OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the 3D accuracy of attachment positioning and the adaptation of aligners to attachments using in-house templates made with either polyethylene terephthalate glycol (PETG) or ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) and either pressure or vacuum thermoforming machines. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Overall, 140 test specimens were resin-printed. Templates for the attachment bonding were made with 1-mm EVA or 0.5-mm PETG laminates. Orthodontic aligners were manufactured with 0.75-mm PETG. The thermoplastification process was carried out using either vacuum or pressure machines. The positional differences between the virtual and bonded attachments were assessed in the X, Y and Z coordinates. The marginal adaptation between the aligners and the attachments was measured. RESULTS: Minor inaccuracies in the positioning of the attachments were observed in all combinations of thermoforming machines and plastic laminates used to fabricate the templates, mainly in the superior-inferior (Z) dimension. PETG performed better than EVA in the anterior region (p < .05). No association was found between thermoplastification machines and the accuracy of the positioning of the attachments (p > .05). While small misadaptations between the aligners and the attachments were observed, the EVA templates performed better than the PETG templates. CONCLUSIONS: The inaccuracy of the attachment positioning and the misadaptation of the aligners to the attachments were slight. The vacuum and pressure thermoplastification machines showed no difference in attachment positioning accuracy. The PETG template was better than the EVA template in the anterior region, but the EVA attachments presented a better adaptation to the aligners than the PETG attachments.

One of the biggest controversies in current orthodontics is determining the appliance to use, since today patients seek better results in shorter times, in addition to putting aesthetics first. OBJECTIVE: compare the benefits and disadvantages that arise when using fixed orthodontic appliances and transparent aligners. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An investigation and compilation of specialized bibliographic information on the topic was carried out in scientific search engines such as PubMed, SciElo and Web of Science between the years 1991 to 2023, focused on research work related to the effects of the use of orthodontic appliances. fixed compared to clear aligners. RESULTS: The review was carried out based on 53 articles found that met the selection criteria. CONCLUSION: Fixed orthodontic appliances are better in complex cases, they are more precise and less likely to relapse; Transparent aligners are more aesthetic, hygiene is more affective and the bone density of the mandibular condyle decreases.

BACKGROUND: Limited data exist on the mid- to long-term masticatory capacity of mandibular overdenture (IOD) wearers, particularly regarding the use of posterior implants to retention. OBJECTIVES: To periodically evaluate mastication of IOD wearers, comparing the effectiveness of two to four implants to retain the prosthesis. METHODS: In a randomised controlled clinical trial, 20 complete edentulous patients (14 women), aged 51-84 years (mean age 69.1 ± 9.6), received new bimaxillary complete dentures (CD). After adaptation, baseline measurements of masticatory performance (X50) and swallowing threshold were conducted using the sieving method. Patients were then randomly assigned to groups: control (two intra-foraminal regular implants) and experimental (two intra-foraminal regular implants and two extra-short posterior implants) (n = 10 each). After 4 months, implants were splinted, and a new mandibular IOD was fabricated with bar/clip retention. Mastication was reassessed after 6, 12, and 48 months, and data analysed with repeated measures ANOVA and Sidak's post hoc (α = 0.05). RESULTS: Despite a loss of two patients per group, masticatory performance significantly improved after mandibular IOD installation (p = .031) in both groups (p = .670). A second improvement was observed after 6 months (p = .027), with no subsequent changes (p > .05). Swallowing threshold improvements were noted with IOD, and no discernible differences between groups were observed (p > .05). CONCLUSION: Masticatory function significantly improved after mandibular IOD installation, with the number of implants demonstrating minimal influence. CLINICAL TRIAL REGISTRATION: The present study was not registered in a public database, as mandated. It is important to note that the recommendation for registration was initiated in 2017 by the Committee of Medical Journal Editors, while patient inclusion in the research took place in 2016. Given that the data presented in this manuscript cover a follow-up period of up to 4 years post-surgical intervention, delayed registration was not feasible.

BACKGROUND: Edentulism remains a major disability worldwide, especially among the elderly population, although the prevalence of complete edentulism has declined over the last decades. In Uganda, the prevalence of edentulism in people aged 20 years and above is 1.8%. The therapy for edentulous patients can be realized through the use of conventional removable complete dentures, implant-supported prostheses, and computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CADCAM), however, the provision of removable complete dentures continues to be the predominant rehabilitation for edentulous patients. However, no published study has explored the lived experiences with removable complete dentures among the Ugandan population. The aim of the present study was to explore patients' lived experiences on the usage of removable complete dentures among Ugandan edentulous patients attending Makerere University Dental Hospital. METHODS: This was a qualitative study approach using purposive sampling. Fifteen (15) respondents were selected across social demographics. Interviews were recorded and transcribed and themes were generated to draw a deeper meaning to the usage of removable complete dentures. A qualitative statistical package, Atlas Ti software was used to generate themes from the interviews followed by an interpretation of the generated data and the results were presented as text and in a table. RESULTS: The reported key positive experiences due to removable complete denture rehabilitation were the improvement in speech, eating ability, regaining good facial appearance, better oral hygiene management, self-esteem and confidence to smile in public, and a feeling of completeness. However, respondents complained of pain and discomfort due to the looseness of dentures, inability to eat certain foods, and regular cleaning of dentures. The respondents did not go through proper informed consent processes before getting removable complete dentures. CONCLUSION: The study found that patients were satisfied with their removable complete dentures rehabilitation due to the positive experiences registered, such as the ability to eat and talk well, and restoration of self-esteem, all of which improved their quality of life. However, they experience pain and discomfort due to the looseness of dentures.

RESUMEN Introducción: Diversos autores mencionan que una correcta planificación de una dentadura parcial removible incrementa la satisfacción de los pacientes, en cuanto a estética y función. En casos donde la estética es prioritaria, se plantea un diseño sin retenedores visibles. En estos casos, la elaboración de la dentadura no demanda mayores costos, basta con establecer el diagnóstico correspondiente valorando los pilares, eje de inserción, áreas retentivas entre otros y establecer el diseño más conveniente según sea el caso. Objetivo: El objetivo fue realizar una revisión sistematizada sobre la percepción de la calidad de vida y satisfacción en pacientes portadores de dentaduras parciales removibles. Materiales y métodos: Se incluyeron 13 artículos científicos mediante la metodología PRISMA para la identificación, revisión e inclusión de los textos que formaron parte del estudio. Se seleccionaron tomando en cuenta el título, resumen y objetivo. Fueron considerados: revisiones sistemáticas, metaanálisis, estudios comparativos y revisiones de literatura que evaluaran diferentes criterios acerca de la satisfacción en pacientes portadores de dentadura parcial removible. Los artículos fueron leídos íntegramente, se analizaron objetivos, metodología y conclusión de cada uno de ellos, y posteriormente fueron analizados. Resultados: La queja más común fue el resultado estético, seguida del dolor durante la masticación. Se recomienda ofrecer un control periódico de la prótesis parcial removible para evaluar el correcto funcionamiento y ajuste de esta. Conclusión: El éxito del tratamiento con dentaduras parciales removibles se puede optimizar mediante el diagnóstico preciso del caso, considerando experiencias previas del paciente y teniendo en cuenta sus expectativas. Asimismo, comprender ciertos factores como su estilo de vida, nivel socioeconómico, estado de salud periodontal, personalidad, puede disminuir el riesgo de fracaso futuro del tratamiento con dentaduras parciales removibles.

In cases where aesthetics is a priority, a design without visible clasps is proposed. In addition, this elaboration does not demand higher costs, if the practitioner reaches the corresponding diagnosis and establishes the most convenient design for each specific case. Objective: The objective was to carry out a systematic review on the perception of quality of life and satisfaction in patients with removable partial dentures. Materials and methods: Thirteen scientific articles were included using the PRISMA methodology for the identification, review and inclusion of the texts that were part of this study. The articles were selected considering the title, abstract and objective. Systematic reviews, meta-analyses, comparative studies, and literature reviews that included criteria about satisfaction in patients with removable partial dentures where evaluated. The articles were read in their entirety: the objectives, methodology and conclusions of each one of them were analyzed. Results: The most common complaint was the aesthetic result, followed by pain during chewing. It is recommended to offer periodic control of the removable partial denture to evaluate its correct functioning and fit. Conclusion: The success of the treatment with removable partial dentures can be evaluated through the precise diagnosis of the case, considering previous experiences and taking into account the expectations of the patient. Also, understanding the patient's lifestyle, socioeconomic level, periodontal health status, and personality, may be factors that allow the practitioner to reduce the risk of future failure for the treatment with removable partial dentures.

Edentulism can generate negative impacts on self-esteem, interpersonal relationships, and oral functions. Removable prostheses are commonly used for tooth replacement, but they may cause discomfort due to micromovements during mastication. Objective and quantifiable methods are needed to evaluate these micromovements. A pilot study was conducted to determine the micromovements in removable prostheses during mastication using a 3D electromagnetic articulography (EMA-3D) system. One elderly participant wearing lower removable prostheses and an upper total well-fitting removable prosthesis was studied. The EMA-3D system was used to record movements in three spatial planes. Peanuts were given as test food, and the participant was instructed to chew normally while recordings were carried out until feeling the need to swallow. Analyses of the upper total prosthesis show micromovements ranging from 0.63 ± 0.11 to 1.02 ± 0.13 mm. During simultaneous analyses of the upper prosthesis and lower partial prosthesis, interference was not observed. This pilot study demonstrated the feasibility of using the EMA-3D system to evaluate micromovements in removable prostheses during mastication. Further research is needed to evaluate a larger sample and assess the clinical implications of these micromovements.

The objective of the study is to assess the precision of digital impressions in removable partial dentures through an in vitro study on the degree of abutment adaptation. A Kennedy Class III model with a prosthetic space between elements 43 and 47, featuring niches in the mesio-occlusal and cingulum regions, respectively. Conventional impressions were performed in subgroups CONC and CONM, while digital scanning was conducted in subgroups DIGC and DIGM. Simplified cobalt-chromium alloy frameworks were manufactured using the lost-wax technique on plaster and resin models. The degree of adaptation of the structures was evaluated by impressing the niches with condensation silicone, qualitatively assessing perforations, and quantitatively measuring the mold thickness under a stereomicroscope after cross-sectioning. Regular adaptation was more prevalent among the experimental groups. CONC showed a higher mean degree of abutment adaptation, while CONM had a lower mean. The study factors, impression technique, and type of abutment seat, were not statistically significant, with no interaction among the variables. Occlusal and cingulum abutment measurement points, in both impression techniques, showed no statistically significant difference. Digital scanning yielded better results in terms of abutment adaptation, with smaller average gaps between the abutment seat and the metal structure, making it clinically acceptable. The type of abutment seat and the impression technique did not have a statistically significant impact on abutment adaptation. The impression technique does not represent a factor influencing the adaptation of occlusal and cingulum abutments at different measurement points. (AU)
O Objetivo do estudo é valiar precisão da impressão digital em próteses parciais removíveis, por meio de um estudo in vitro sobre o grau de adaptação dos apoios. Um modelo Classe III de Kennedy com espaço protético entre o elemento 43 e 47, nichos na região mésio-oclusal e na do cíngulo. Foram realizadas impressões convencionais nos subgrupos CONC e CONM, e digitalização nos subgrupos DIGC e DIGM, onde estruturas simplificadas de liga de Co-Cr foram fabricadas usando a técnica de fundição perdida nos modelos de gesso e resina. O grau de adaptação das estruturas foi avaliado pela impressão dos nichos com silicone de condensação, qualitativamente as perfurações e quantitativamente a espessura do molde em um estereomicroscópio após seção transversal. A adaptação regular foi mais prevalente entre os grupos experimentais. CONC maior média do grau de adaptação do apoio, enquanto CONM menor média. Os fatores do estudo, técnica de impressão e tipo de assento de apoio, não foram estatisticamente significativos, sem interação entre as variáveis. Pontos de medição de apoio oclusal e de cíngulo, em ambas as técnicas de impressão, sem diferença estatisticamente significativa. A digitalização mostrou melhores resultados em relação ao grau de adaptação dos apoios, com menores lacunas médias entre o assento de apoio e a estrutura metálica, sendo clinicamente aceitável. O tipo de assento de apoio e a técnica de impressão não interferem estatisticamente na adaptação dos apoios. A técnica de impressão não representa um fator que influencie a adaptação de apoios oclusais e de cíngulo em diferentes pontos de medição. (AU)
RESUMEN
Este estudo objetiva apresentar a experiência do componente curricular Prótese Parcial Removível (PPR) da Universidade Federal da Paraíba com a implementação de metodologias ativas, como gamificação, sala de aula invertida e case-based learning(CBL), no ensino à distância, visando sedimentar o aprendizado quanto ao planejamento de arcos parcialmente desdentados. As atividades foram realizadas de forma síncrona e assíncrona, utilizando como casos os esquemas bidimensionais e fotografias de arcosparcialmente desdentados, baseando-se no conceito de sala de aula invertida, no qual os alunos apresentavam os casos e os professores atuavam como mediadores nas discussões. Observou-se um grande engajamento e participação ativa dos alunos na construção do seuconhecimento. A inserção dessas metodologias no ensino remoto funcionou como um eixo motivacional para os alunos, fomentando a aprendizagem e estimulando o desenvolvimento de competências no planejamento em PPR previamente ao atendimento clínico (AU).
Este estudio tiene como objetivo presentar la experiencia del componente curricular Prótesis Parcial Removible de la Universidade Federal da Paraíba con la implementación de metodologías activas, como gamificación, aula invertida y aprendizaje basado en casos, en educación a distancia, con el objetivo de consolidar el aprendizaje sobre la planificación de arcadas parcialmente edéntulas. Las actividades se realizaron de forma sincrónica y asincrónica, utilizando diagramas bidimensionales y fotografías de arcos parcialmente edéntulos como casos, basados en el concepto de aula invertida, en la que los estudiantes presentaban los casos y los docentes actuaban como mediadores en las discusiones. Hubo un gran compromiso y participación activa de los estudiantes en la construcción de su conocimiento. La inclusión de estas metodologías en la enseñanza a distancia funcionó como eje motivacional de los estudiantes, favoreciendo el aprendizaje y estimulando el desarrollo de habilidades en la planificación de la Prótesis Parcial Removible previa a la atención clínica (AU).
This study aims to present the experience of RPD course at the Universidade Federal da Paraíba using active methodologies such as gamification, flipped classroom and case-based learning (CBL) in distance learning, aiming to consolidate learning in planningpartially edentulous arches. Activities were carried out synchronously and asynchronously using two-dimensional schemes and photographs of partially edentulous arches as "cases" and based on the concept of the flipped classroom, where students presented the cases and the teachers acted as mediators in the discussions. Excellent engagement and active participation of students in their knowledge construction were observed. The insertion of these methodologies in remote teaching acted as a motivational axis for the students, promoting learning and stimulating development of competences in RPD planning prior to clinical care (AU).

OBJECTIVE: To compare the anterior crowding correction after sequential use of the first 5 aligners between two aligner exchange protocols (7 and 14 days) in mature adult patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty-six patients over 35 years who received orthodontic treatment with Invisalign® were randomly allocated to two different aligner replacement sequence protocols: Group 1: exchange every 7 days (n = 18); and Group 2: exchange every 14 days (n = 18). All patients were scanned with iTero Element 5D® (Align Technology) in two treatment times: at pre-treatment (T1) and after using the first five aligners (T2). Little's Irregularity Index (LII) and arch widths were evaluated with OrthoCAD software. Intra and intergroup comparisons were performed with the dependent and independent t-tests. The results were considered significant for P < .05. RESULTS: Thirty-five patients completed the study. Both groups' maxillary and mandibular Irregularity Indexesi were significantly lower at T2. There was no significant difference in inter-canine, inter-premolar, and intermolar distances. G2 (14 days) presented a greater decrease in mandibular irregularity than G1 (7 days). CONCLUSION: Both exchange protocols (7 and 14 days) effectively correct anterior crowding in the initial phase of orthodontic treatment with aligners in mature adult patients. However, the 14-day exchange protocol provided a greater correction in mandibular anterior crowding in the evaluated period than the 7-day exchange protocol.

A cada ano que passa a procura por tratamentos ortodônticos está mais frequente, e isso se dá pelo fato da valorização do sorriso e da estética facial estar cada vez mais perceptível perante a sociedade. As modalidades de tratamento são diversas, e com o avanço da tecnologia, estão cada vez mais modernas, confortáveis e objetivas para suprir a necessidade do paciente. Dentre elas, podemos citar a aparatologia ortodôntica fixa que é o sistema mais antigo e os alinhadores estéticos que são os aparelhos mais modernos na ortodontia digital. Esse estudo tem como objetivo relatar dois casos clínicos e revisar a literatura científica existente acerca do tratamento ortodôntico utilizando aparelhos fixos comparados aos alinhadores removíveis, evidenciando suas vantagens e desvantagens, indicações e limitações (AU)
With each passing year the search for orthodontic treatments is more frequent, and this is due to the fact that the appreciation of smile and facial aesthetics is increasingly noticeable before society. The treatment modalities are diverse, and with the advancement of technology, are increasingly modern, comfortable, and objective in view of the needs of the patient. Among them, we can mention the fixed orthodontic aparatology, which is the oldest system, and the aesthetic aligners that are the most modern devices in the face of digital orthodontics. This study aims to report clinical cases and review the existing scientific literature on orthodontic treatment using fixed devices compared to removable aligners, evidencing its advantages and disadvantages indications, and limitations.(AU)

A aparência do sorriso tem grande impacto socialmente, portanto, é compreensível a busca por um tratamento ortodôntico que não prejudique a aparência facial. Assim, surgiram os alinhadores como alternativa aos aparelhos fixos convencionais. Todavia, além da estética, há muitos fatores a serem avaliados ao escolher entre os dois tratamentos, como limitações na rotina diária, consumo alimentar, sintomas orais, satisfação com o tratamento e dor. Este estudo objetivou comparar, por meio de uma revisão sistemática, as vantagens e desvantagens dos aparelhos fixos e alinhadores. Foi realizada uma pesquisa nas bases de dados National Library of Medicine/NLM (PubMed), Cochrane Library, SciELO e LILACS. Para esta revisão, foram incluídos ensaios clínicos e estudos observacionais publicados a partir de 2019, em inglês. Foram encontrados 201 artigos na base de dados PubMed e, após aplicados os critérios de elegibilidade, 5 artigos foram incluídos. Nas bases de dados SciELO e LILACS, não foram encontrados artigos que atendiam aos critérios e, na Cochrane, foi encontrado 1 artigo. Assim, 6 artigos foram escolhidos para essa revisão. Os resultados mostraram eficácia equivalente em ambos os aparelhos, porém, a avaliação do número de consultas/emergência mostrou melhores resultados para alinhadores. Ainda assim, eles afetam a pronúncia e a apresentação da fala a curto prazo. Concluiu-se que os dois tipos de aparelho apresentam eficácia semelhante. Entretanto, os alinhadores são mais vantajosos em comparação aos aparelhos fixos quanto ao menor tempo de tratamento, menos sintomatologia dolorosa, menos dificuldade para se alimentar e maior estética para os adultos.(AU)
The appearance of the smile has a great social impact, therefore, the search for an orthodontic treatment that does not harm the facial appearance is understandable. Thus, aligners emerged as an alternative to conventional fixed appliances. However, in addition to aesthetics, there are many factors to be evaluated when choosing between the two treatments, such as limitations in daily routine, food consumption, oral symptoms, satisfaction with treatment, and pain. This study aimed to compare, through a systematic review, the advantages and disadvantages of fixed appliances and aligners. A search was carried out in the National Library of Medicine/NLM (PubMed), Cochrane Library, SciELO, and LILACS databases. Clinical trials and observational studies published from 2019 onwards, in English, were included for this review. Two hundred and one articles were found in the PubMed database and, after applying the eligibility criteria, 5 articles were included. In the SciELO and LILACS databases, no articles were found that met the criteria and, in Cochrane, 1 article was found. Thus, 6 articles were The appearance of the smile has a great social impact, therefore, the search for an orthodontic treatment that does not harm the facial appearance is understandable. ABSTRACT Objective: The purpose of this retrospective study was to compare accuracy of arch expansion using two different thermoplastic materials in Invisalign aligners: EX30® (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol, or PETG) and SmartTrack® (polyurethane). Methods: The study sample comprised 65 adult patients consecutively treated with Invisalign from two private practices: group 1 - treated with EX30® (358 teeth) and group 2 - treated with SmartTrack® (888 teeth). Six hundred and twenty-three measurements were assessed in three digital models throughout treatment: model 1 - initial, model 2 - predicted tooth position, and model 3 - achieved position. Sixteen reference points per arch were marked and, after best alignment, 2 points per tooth were copied from one digital model to another. Linear values of both arches were measured for canines, premolars, and first molars: on lingual gingival margins and cusp tips of every tooth. Comparisons were performed by Wilcoxon and Mann-Whitney test. Results: Both termoplastic materials presented significant differences between predicted and achieved values for all measurements, except for the lower molar cusp tip in the SmartTrack® group. There is no statistical difference in the accuracy of transverse expansion between these two materials. Overall accuracy for EX30® aligners in maxilla and mandible were found to be 37 and 38%, respectively; and Smarttrack® presented an overall accuracy of 56.62% in the maxilla and 68.72% in the mandible. Conclusions: It is not possible to affirm one material expands better than the other. Further controlled clinical studies should be conducted comparing SmartTrack® and EX30® under similar conditions.
RESUMO Objetivo: O objetivo deste estudo retrospectivo foi comparar a acurácia na expansão da arcada utilizando alinhadores Invisalign com dois tipos de material termoplástico: EX30® (Polietileno Tereftalato Glicol, ou PETG) e SmartTrack® (poliuretano). Método: A amostra desse estudo incluiu 65 pacientes adultos tratados consecutivamente em dois consultórios particulares: grupo 1 - tratado com EX30® (358 dentes), e grupo 2 - tratado com SmartTrack® (888 dentes). Foram avaliadas 623 medidas em três pares de modelos digitais, ao longo do tratamento: modelo 1 - inicial, modelo 2 - posição dentária planejada, modelo 3 - posição alcançada. Foram marcados 16 pontos de referência por arcada e, após o bestfit, 2 pontos por arcada foram copiados de um modelo digital para o outro. Medidas lineares de ambas as arcadas foram aferidas para caninos, pré-molares e primeiros molares, localizadas na margem gengival lingual e ponta de cúspide de todos os dentes. Foram realizadas comparações usando os testes Wilcoxon e Mann-Whitney. Resultados: Ambos os materiais termoplásticos apresentaram diferenças significativas entre os valores planejados e alcançados em todas as medidas, exceto na ponta de cúspide dos primeiros molares inferiores do grupo SmartTrack®. Não houve diferença estatística entre esses dois materiais quanto à acurácia da expansão transversa. Em termos gerais, a acurácia dos alinhadores EX30® na maxila e mandíbula foi de 37% e 38%, respectivamente. O grupo SmartTrack® apresentou acurácia de 56,62% e 68,72% na maxila e mandíbula, respectivamente. Conclusões: Não foi possível afirmar que um material expande melhor que o outro. Estudos clínicos controlados futuros devem ser conduzidos comparando SmartTrack® e EX30® sob condições similares.

ABSTRACT Objective: This retrospective study aimed to assess the predictability of Invisalign® aligners regarding rotational, mesio-distal and buccal-lingual tip movements. Methods: Two materials were included in the analysis - EX30, used until 2013; and SmartTrack, in current use. The study comprised 56 adult patients treated with Invisalign Comprehensive. Data sample were assessed on three sets of digital models; model 1 - initial, model 2 - predicted, and model 3 - achieved. Sixty reference points were marked in each dental arch, and two reference planes assisted the superimposition. The degree of rotation, mesio-distal and buccal-lingual tip was obtained via trigonometric calculations, through a previously published validated method. The accuracy of outcomes was compared according to the types of tooth movement and teeth groups,and the influence of predetermined variables on movement accuracy was also investigated. Results: Rotation and mesio-distal tip did not present any significant difference when comparing EX30 and SmartTrack groups. Only buccal-lingual tip presented a significant difference, incisor and canine groups treated with EX30 aligners presented an increase in accuracy (p= 0.007 and p = 0.007, respectively). For each additional degree planned for rotation movements, there was an increase of 0.35° in the discrepancy, and an increase of 0.40° and 0.41° for mesio-distal and buccal-lingual tip, respectively. EX30 and SmartTrack discrepancies were compared by multilevel linear regression. Conclusion: EX30 aligners reached higher accuracy for buccal-lingual tip in anterior teeth. However, for rotation and mesio-distal tip, SmartTrack and EX30 are similarly accurate. The total amount of planned movement has a significant impact on accuracy rates, with a decrease in accuracy for every additional degree.
RESUMO Objetivo: Esse estudo retrospectivo teve como objetivo aferir a previsibilidade dos alinhadores Invisalign em relação aos movimentos de rotação e inclinações mesiodistal e vestibulolingual. Material e Métodos: Foram incluídos dois materiais nessa análise: EX30®, utilizado até 2013; e SmartTrack®, atualmente em uso. Esse estudo avaliou 56 pacientes tratados com Invisalign Comprehensive. Os dados foram avaliados em três pares de modelos digitais; modelo 1 - inicial, modelo 2 - planejado, e modelo 3 - alcançado. Foram marcados 60 pontos de referência em cada arcada, sendo a sobreposição realizada com auxílio de planos de referência. O grau de rotação e inclinações mesiodistal e vestibulolingual foi obtido por cálculos de trigonometria, usando um método validado publicado anteriormente. Os resultados foram comparados de acordo com os tipos de movimento dentário e grupos de dentes, também foi investigada a influência de variáveis predeterminadas na confiabilidade dos movimentos. Resultados: Os movimentos de rotação e inclinação mesiodistal não apresentaram diferença estatística, quando comparados os grupos EX30® e SmartTrack®. Somente a inclinação vestibulolingual apresentou diferença estatisticamente significativa, sendo que os grupos de incisivos e caninos tratados com alinhadores EX30® apresentaram um aumento na previsibilidade(p= 0,007 e p= 0,007, respectivamente). Para cada grau adicional planejado para movimento de rotação, ocorreu um aumento de 0,35° na discrepância, e aumentos de 0,40° e 0,41° para as inclinações mesiodistal e vestibulolingual, respectivamente. As discrepâncias entre EX30® e SmartTrack® foram comparadas por regressão linear multinível. Conclusão: Os alinhadores EX30® alcançaram maior previsibilidade para a inclinação vestibulolingual em dentes anteriores. No entanto, para rotação e inclinação mesiodistal, SmartTrack® e EX30® apresentaram previsibilidade similar. A quantidade total de movimento planejado apresenta influência significativa nas taxas de previsibilidade, com diminuição na acurácia para cada grau adicional.

ABSTRACT The Removable Partial Denture stands as an effective rehabilitation choice for patients who have undergone partial maxillectomy surgery due to maxillary tumors, involving the partial surgical removal of the maxillary bone. Removable partial denture are meticulously designed to restore masticatory, phonetic, and aesthetic functions, thereby contributing significantly to enhancing self-esteem and aiding patients in resuming social activities. During the patient's history-taking phase, it is of paramount importance to assess the patient's overall health, psychological state, expectations, and limitations. Ensuring regular follow-ups is imperative to prevent complications and to guarantee the durability of the prosthesis. Prosthetic planning constitutes a critical phase and can pose challenges, especially in achieving proper retention, stability, and suitable supports. Factors such as the defect size, the number of remaining teeth, and the amount of remaining bone structures can influence the treatment prognosis. It is crucial to emphasize that lack of adequate planning can lead to rehabilitation failures, resulting in discomfort, compromised functionality, and even potential harm to the patient's health. In this context, this study aims to present a successful clinical case of a patient who underwent partial maxillectomy and was rehabilitated through a Removable Partial Denture fixed with clasps on the entire left upper hemi-arch. This case vividly illustrates the importance of a personalized approach to prosthetic rehabilitation in patients with partial maxillectomy, taking into account the specificities of each case and highlighting the necessity of interdisciplinary collaboration to achieve satisfactory outcomes.
RESUMO A prótese parcial removível é uma opção eficaz de reabilitação para pacientes que passaram por cirurgia de maxilectomia parcial em decorrência de tumores maxilares, ou seja, remoção cirúrgica parcial do osso maxilar. A prótese parcial removível deve ser projetada para recuperar as funções mastigatória, fonética e estética, contribuindo assim na melhoria da autoestima e ajudando o paciente a retornar às atividades sociais. Durante a anamnese, é de grande importância verificar o estado geral e psicológico do paciente, suas expectativas e limitações, garantir o acompanhamento frequente para evitar complicações e garantir a durabilidade da prótese. O planejamento protético é uma etapa crítica e pode apresentar desafios, especialmente na obtenção de retenção, estabilidade e suportes adequados. Fatores como o tamanho do defeito, o número de dentes remanescentes e a quantidade de estruturas ósseas remanescentes podem interferir no prognóstico do tratamento. É importante ressaltar que a falta de planejamento pode levar a falhas na reabilitação, resultando em desconforto, má funcionalidade e até mesmo danos à saúde do paciente. Nesse contexto, o presente trabalho tem como objetivo apresentar um caso clínico de sucesso de uma paciente que foi submetida a uma maxilectomia parcial e reabilitada por meio de uma prótese parcial removível fixada por grampos em todo o hemiarco superior esquerdo. Este caso ilustra a importância de uma abordagem personalizada para a reabilitação protética em pacientes com maxilectomia parcial, considerando as particularidades de cada caso e a colaboração interdisciplinar para a obtenção de resultados satisfatórios.

Introducción: Debido al desdentamiento, el rendimiento y la fuerza masticatoria disminuyen, lo que implica una desorganización y descompensación del sistema estomatognático con fuerzas provocadas por la masticación, que se distribuyen en el hueso a través de dientes y mucosas y provocan la reabsorción ósea en zonas edéntulas. Objetivo: Comparar el rendimiento masticatorio y la fuerza masticatoria máxima funcional en pacientes desdentados parciales portadores de prótesis parcial removible dentomucosoportadas, antes y después de la instalación quirúrgica de implantes oseointegrados como pilares protésicos auxiliares. Métodos: Se seleccionaron 10 pacientes rehabilitados mediante prótesis parcial removibles. Se les realizaron el test biomecánico de medición de fuerza masticatoria y test de Manly para la evaluación del rendimiento masticatorio antes de la instalación del implante y a los tres y seis meses poscirugía. Resultados: Se obtuvo un valor promedio de rendimiento masticatorio de 24,2 ( 9,73 % antes de la cirugía de implantes, de 44,1 ( 13,28 % a los tres meses y de 45,6 ( 14,33 % a los seis meses posterior a esta (p = 0,001). Antes de la cirugía implantaria se obtuvo como promedio una fuerza masticatoria de 10,6 ( 4,34 kg, de 12,5 ( 4,28 kg a los tres meses y de 15,1 ( 5,12 kg a los seis meses posterior a esta (p = 0,008). Conclusiones: La utilización de implantes oseointegrados como pilares auxiliares en prótesis removibles dentomucosoportadas se asocian a un mayor rendimiento masticatorio y a un aumento de la fuerza masticatoria máxima funcional, asociado al alivio de la carga directa sobre los rebordes maxilares edéntulos.
Introduction: Due to edentulousness, masticatory performance and masticatory force decrease, which implies a disorganization and decompensation of the stomatognathic system with forces provoked by mastication, which are distributed in the bone through teeth and mucous membranes and cause bone resorption in edentulous areas. Objective: To compare masticatory performance and maximum functional masticatory force in partially edentulous patients with dentomucosally supported removable partial dentures before and after surgical installation of osseointegrated implants as auxiliary prosthetic abutments. Methods: Ten patients rehabilitated with removable partial dentures were selected. The biomechanical test of masticatory force measurement and the Manly test were performed to evaluate masticatory performance before implant installation and at three- and six-months post-surgery. Results: An average masticatory performance value of 24.2 ( 9.73 % was obtained before implant surgery, 44.1 ( 13.28 % at three months and 45.6 ( 14.33 % at six months after implant surgery (p = 0.001). Before implant surgery, an average masticatory force of 10.6 ( 4.34 kg, 12.5 4.28 kg at three months and 15.1 ( 5.12 kg at six months after implant surgery was obtained (p = 0.008). Conclusions: The use of osseointegrated implants as auxiliary abutments in dentomucosally supported removable prostheses are associated with increased masticatory performance and increased maximum functional masticatory force, associated with relief of direct load on edentulous maxillary ridges.

This study aimed to review systematically the literature about the antimicrobial action of evaluated cleansers on the Co-Cr alloy of RPD. The search was conducted in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Lilacs, Embase and Science Direct May, 2022. The review was performed based on PRISMA guidelines and recorded in Open Science Framework. Independent reviewers performed the search, selection, extraction, and analysis of the data. The risk of bias of the in vitro and clinical trials studies was analyzed by the Joanna Briggs Institute tool. A total of 187 articles were found and 9 were included. The cleansers that showed antimicrobial action were 2% and 5.25% sodium hypochlorite, 0.12% chlorhexidine and NitrAdine effervescent tablet. Polident, Corega Tabs effervescent tablets and 5 mg/mL chitosan solution showed intermediate effects. Propolis and green tea toothpaste were not effective. Three articles presented a high risk of bias and 6, low risk. The cleansers that showed the highest antimicrobial efficacy on Co-Cr alloy were 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate and NitrAdine and can be safely used on RPD framework.

As próteses parciais removíveis (PPRs) são uma alternativa de tratamento viável na prática clínica para reabilitar arcos parcialmente desdentados. Entretanto, o planejamento dessas próteses e preparo bucal prévio são frequentemente negligenciados. O presente artigo tem como objetivo relatar o caso clínico de uma reabilitação oral com PPRs superior e inferior após abordagem multidisciplinar, de modo a enfatizar as fases de um planejamento criterioso e de preparo prévio dos dentes pilares, visando o sucesso e a longevidade da reabilitação. Paciente do sexo masculino de 57 anos de idade compareceu à clínica da Faculdade de Odontologia de Bauru, Universidade de São Paulo, queixando-se da estética de seu sorriso e de algumas ausências dentárias. O indivíduo utilizava uma PPR provisória inferior insatisfatória e apresentava perda de dimensão vertical de oclusão (DVO). Após o exame clínico, radiográfico e estudo do caso em articulador semi-ajustável, realizou-se o planejamento com abordagens restauradoras, endodônticas, periodontais e protéticas. Após tratamento periodontal, foi realizada endodontia dos elementos 12, 15 e 47, confecção de núcleos e coroas nos dentes 12 e 15, restauração a nível gengival para apoio residual no dente 47, restaurações nos dentes 11, 13, 22, 24 e 44 e, por fim, a confecção das PPRs superior e inferior. A abordagem multidisciplinar utilizada neste caso clínico viabilizou o restabelecimento da DVO e possibilitou o sucesso da reabilitação protética(AU)
Removable partial dentures (RPDs) are a viable treatment alternative in clinical practice to rehabilitate partially edentulous arches. However, the planning of these dentures and prior oral preparation are often neglected. This article aims to report the clinical case of an oral rehabilitation with upper and lower RPDs after a multidisciplinary approach, to emphasize the phases of careful planning and prior preparation of the abutment teeth, aiming at the success and longevity of the rehabilitation. A 57-year-old male patient came to the clinic of the Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo, complaining about the esthetics of his smile and some missing teeth. The subject was using an unsatisfactory lower provisional prosthesis and had a loss of vertical dimension of occlusion (OVD). After the clinical and radiographic examination and the case study in a semi-adjustable articulator, planning was carried out with restorative, endodontic, periodontal and prosthetic approaches. After periodontal treatment, endodontics were performed on elements 12, 15 and 47, creation of cores and crowns on teeth 12 and 15, restoration at the gingival level for residual support on tooth 47, restorations on teeth 11, 13, 22, 24 and 44 and, finally, the making of the upper and lower PPRs. The multidisciplinary approach used in this clinical case enabled the restoration of the OVD and enabled the success of the oral rehabilitation(AU)

O objetivo deste relato de experiência foi integrar os componentes curriculares Escultura Dental e Prótese Parcial Removível por meio da confecção de macromodelos com nichos em dentes anteriores e posteriores a serem usados como material didático auxiliar.A metodologia teve abordagem descritiva. Foram confeccionados macromodelos em cera dos seguintes elementos dentários: caninos superiores e inferiores, pré-molar superior e molares superiores e inferiores. Em seguida, nichos foram preparados nos elementos,reproduzindo as características da etapa de Preparo de Boca Tipo II ou Protético. Macromodelos com as características individuais de nichos oclusais simples e duplo (interdental) em dentes posteriores foram obtidos, bem como com nichos em cíngulos, tanto confecionados por desgaste como por acréscimo. Diante do conhecimento da anatomia dental e a habilidade manual desenvolvidos na Escultura Dental, os macromodelos confeccionados permitiram uma melhor visualização das características morfológicas dos nichos,sendo considerado um recurso complementar no processo ensino-aprendizagem em Prótese Parcial Removível (AU).

La metodología tuvo un enfoque descriptivo. Se realizaron macromodelos en cera de los siguientes dientes: caninos superiores e inferiores, premolares superiores y molares superiores e inferiores. A continuación, se prepararon nichos en los elementos, reproduciendo las características de la etapa de Preparación de la Boca Tipo II o Prótesis. Se obtuvieron macromodelos con las características individuales de nichos oclusales simples y dobles (interdentales) en dientes posteriores, así comonichos en cingulados, ambos creados por desgaste y adición. Dado el conocimiento de la anatomía dental y la habilidad manual desarrollada en la Escultura Dental, los macromodelos realizados permitieron una mejor visualización de las características morfológicas de los nichos, considerándose un recurso complementario en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en Prótesis Parcial Removible (AU).
The objective of this experience report was to integrate the curricular components of Dental Sculpture and Removable Partial Dentures through the creation of macromodels with rest seat in anterior and posterior teeth to be used as auxiliary teaching material. The methodology had a descriptive approach. Wax macromodels were made of the following teeth: upper and lower canines, upper premolar and upper and lower molars. Next, rest seats were prepared in the elements, reproducing the characteristics of the Type II or Prosthetic Mouth Preparation stage. Macromodels with the individual characteristics of single and double (interdental) occlusal rest seats in posterior teeth were obtained, as well as rest seats in cingulum, both created by wear and with composites. Given the knowledge of dental anatomy and the manual skill developed in Dental Sculpture, the macromodels made enabled better visualization of the morphological characteristics of the rest seats, being considered a complementary resource in the teaching-learning process in Removable Partial Prosthesis (AU).
