RESUMEN

This work established a quantitative method to access the shear stability of aerobic granular sludge (AGS) and validated its feasibility by using the mature AGS from a pilot-scale (50 tons/day) membrane bioreactor (MBR) for treating real municipal wastewater. The results showed that the changing rate (ΔS) of the peak area (S) of granule size distribution (GSD) exhibited an exponential relationship (R2≥0.76) with the shear time (y=a-b·cx), which was a suitable indicative index to reflect the shear stability of different AGS samples. The limiting granule size (LGS) was defined and proposed to characterize the equilibrium size for AGS after being sheared for a period of time, whose value in terms of Dv50 showed high correlation (R2=0.92) with the parameter a. The free Ca2+ (28.44-34.21 mg/L) in the influent specifically interacted with polysaccharides (PS) in the granule's extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) as a nucleation site, thereby inducing the formation of Ca precipitation to enhance its Young's modulus, while Ca2+ primarily interacted with PS in soluble metabolic product (SMP) during the initial granulation process. Furthermore, the Young's modulus significantly affected the parameter a related to shear stability (R2=0.99). Since the parameter a was more closely related (R2=1.00) to ΔS than that of the parameter b or c, the excellent correlation (R2=0.99) between the parameter a and the wet density further verified the feasibility of this method.

RESUMEN

Tight sandstone reservoirs are a primary focus of research on the geological exploration of petroleum. However, many reservoir classification criteria are of limited applicability due to the inherent strong heterogeneity and complex micropore structure of tight sandstone reservoirs. This investigation focused on the Chang 8 tight reservoir situated in the Jiyuan region of the Ordos Basin. High-pressure mercury intrusion experiments, casting thin sections, and scanning electron microscopy experiments were conducted. Image recognition technology was used to extract the pore shape parameters of each sample. Based on the above, through grey relational analysis (GRA), analytic hierarchy process (AHP), entropy weight method (EWM) and comprehensive weight method, the relationship index Q1 between initial productivity and high pressure mercury injection parameters and the relationship index Q2 between initial productivity and pore shape parameters are obtained by fitting. Then a dual-coupled comprehensive quantitative classification prediction model for tight sandstone reservoirs was developed based on pore structure and shape parameters. A quantitative classification study was conducted on the target reservoir, analyzing the correlation between reservoir quality and pore structure and shape parameters, leading to the proposal of favourable exploration areas. The research results showed that when Q1 ≥ 0.5 and Q2 ≥ 0.5, the reservoir was classified as type I. When Q1 > 0.7 and Q2 > 0.57, it was classified as type I1, indicating a high-yield reservoir. When 0.32 < Q1 < 0.47 and 0.44 < Q2 < 0.56, was classified as type II. When 0.1 < Q1 < 0.32 and 0.3 < Q2 < 0.44, it was classified as type III. Type I reservoirs exhibit a zigzag pattern in the northwest part of the study area. Thus, the northwest should be prioritized in actual exploration and development. Additionally, the initial productivity of tight sandstone reservoirs showed a positive correlation with the porosity, permeability, sorting coefficient, coefficient of variation, and median radius. Conversely, it demonstrated a negative correlation with the median pressure and displacement pressure. The perimeters of pores, their circularity, and the length of the major axis showed a positive correlation with the porosity, permeability, sorting coefficient, coefficient of variation, and median radius. On the other hand, they exhibited a negative correlation with the median pressure and displacement pressure. This study quantitatively constructed a new classification and evaluation system for tight sandstone reservoirs from the perspective of microscopic pore structure, achieving an overall model accuracy of 93.3%. This model effectively predicts and evaluates tight sandstone reservoirs. It provides new guidance for identifying favorable areas in the study region and other tight sandstone reservoirs.

RESUMEN

The quick and accurate measurement and evaluation of the deterioration degree and consolidation effectiveness on the surface of masonry relics is valuable for disease investigation and restoration work. However, there is still a lack of quantitative indices for evaluating the deterioration degree and consolidation effectiveness of masonry relics in situ. Based on the micro-drilling resistance method, new quantitative evaluation indices for the deterioration degree and consolidation of masonry materials were proposed. Five types of masonry samples with different deterioration degrees were prepared by artificially accelerated deterioration tests involving sandstone and clay brick as research objects. Three types of consolidants were used to consolidate the deteriorated samples. Drilling resistance tests were conducted for deteriorated and consolidated samples. The variations in deterioration depth and average drilling resistance for samples with different numbers of deterioration cycles were analysed, while the differences in consolidation depth and average drilling resistance for samples with different consolidant types and dosages were compared. Finally, the deterioration degree index ( K ) and consolidation effectiveness index ( R c ), which are based on the average drilling resistance, are proposed. The results can be applied to quick on-site investigations of immovable masonry relics.

RESUMEN

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To compare the diagnostic accuracy and grading ability of ultrasound-derived fat fraction (UDFF), controlled attenuation parameters (CAP), and hepatic/renal ratio (HRR) for hepatic steatosis in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) using magnetic resonance imaging proton density fat fraction (PDFF) as the gold standard. METHODS: Patients suspected of having MASLD in our hospital between October 2023 and May 2024 were divided into the MASLD group and the control group. All patients underwent UDFF, CAP, and PDFF examinations. HRR was measured during routine ultrasound examination. In statistical analysis, we initially assessed the correlation between UDFF, CAP, HRR, and general characteristics of subjects with PDFF. Subsequently, receiver operating characteristic curve were employed to evaluate and compare the diagnostic performance of UDFF, CAP, and HRR for different grades of hepatic steatosis in MASLD. Their area under the curve, optimal cut-off value, sensitivity, and specificity were also determined. Finally, predictive factors determined hepatic steatosis in MASLD (PDFF≥6%) were identified through binary logistic regression analysis. RESULTS: 115 individuals were ultimately included in the MASLD group, while 102 were included in the control group. UDFF, CAP, and HRR were all positively correlated with PDFF. Among them, UDFF exhibited the strongest correlation with PDFF (ρ = 0.91). Furthermore, in the comparison of diagnostic efficacy among different grades of hepatic steatosis, UDFF outperformed CAP and HRR (p < 0.05). However, there were no statistically significant differences in AUCs between CAP and HRR across all three grades. The AUCs for UDFF in ≥S1, ≥S2, and ≥S3 were 0.99 (95% CI 0.97 to 1.00), 0.96 (95% CI 0.93 to 0.98), and 0.97 (95% CI 0.94 to 0.99), respectively. The optimal thresholds for UDFF are determined as follows: ≥ 6% for grade S1; ≥ 15% for grade S2; and ≥ 23% for grade S3. Multivariate analysis revealed that only age, UDFF, and CAP were important influencing factors for hepatic steatosis in MASLD. CONCLUSION: The diagnostic accuracy of UDFF surpassed that of CAP and HRR in the detection and grading of hepatic steatosis in MASLD.

RESUMEN

The formulation and implementation of a rural sports policy is an important means of promoting rural sports, improving the physical wellbeing of farmers, and enhancing the cohesion of rural communities. However, introducing such a policy faces problems in the process of specific policy practices, such as poor effective implementation, a lagging implementation effect, and goal cognitive bias. How to look at the current rural sports policy implementation blockage problem and the governance of the blockage, in order to improve the level of rural sports public service, is the focus of this paper's research. On this basis, this paper selects 56 policy texts, issued from 2002 to 2023, that are highly relevant to rural sports and have high timeliness and authority from the sports policies issued in China. Also, ROST CM6 software is used to count high-frequency words; this study then draws keyword social network mapping for the visual analysis of policy preferences and selects 20 rural sports policy texts as typical samples. Finally, a policy modeling research consistency (PMC) index model is used to evaluate the texts comprehensively and quantitatively. The results show that the overall design of China's rural sports policies is relatively reasonable. However, the consistency and effectiveness of their implementation need to be improved. Twenty representative policy texts have an average PMC index score of 5.96, with a concave index of 3.04 (which is good overall), with the highest mean value for rural sports policies at the national level. This is followed by the second highest value at the municipal and county levels, and the smallest at the provincial level. Therefore, in the future formulation and implementation of rural sports policies, a multi-dimensional rural sports policy system should be constructed. This would help to strengthen the consistency and effectiveness of the implementation of the policy system and promote the high-quality development of rural sports.

RESUMEN

Image-based 3D reconstruction enables laparoscopic applications as image-guided navigation and (autonomous) robot-assisted interventions, which require a high accuracy. The review's purpose is to present the accuracy of different techniques to label the most promising. A systematic literature search with PubMed and google scholar from 2015 to 2023 was applied by following the framework of "Review articles: purpose, process, and structure". Articles were considered when presenting a quantitative evaluation (root mean squared error and mean absolute error) of the reconstruction error (Euclidean distance between real and reconstructed surface). The search provides 995 articles, which were reduced to 48 articles after applying exclusion criteria. From these, a reconstruction error data set could be generated for the techniques of stereo vision, Shape-from-Motion, Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, deep-learning, and structured light. The reconstruction error varies from below one millimeter to higher than ten millimeters-with deep-learning and Simultaneous Localization and Mapping delivering the best results under intraoperative conditions. The high variance emerges from different experimental conditions. In conclusion, submillimeter accuracy is challenging, but promising image-based 3D reconstruction techniques could be identified. For future research, we recommend computing the reconstruction error for comparison purposes and use ex/in vivo organs as reference objects for realistic experiments.

RESUMEN

Noise in computed tomography (CT) is inevitably generated, which lowers the accuracy of disease diagnosis. The non-local means approach, a software technique for reducing noise, is widely used in medical imaging. In this study, we propose a noise reduction algorithm based on fast non-local means (FNLMs) and apply it to CT images of a phantom created using 3D printing technology. The self-produced phantom was manufactured using filaments with similar density to human brain tissues. To quantitatively evaluate image quality, the contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), coefficient of variation (COV), and normalized noise power spectrum (NNPS) were calculated. The results demonstrate that the optimized smoothing factors of FNLMs are 0.08, 0.16, 0.22, 0.25, and 0.32 at 0.001, 0.005, 0.01, 0.05, and 0.1 of noise intensities, respectively. In addition, we compared the optimized FNLMs with noisy, local filters and total variation algorithms. As a result, FNLMs showed superior performance compared to various denoising techniques. Particularly, comparing the optimized FNLMs to the noisy images, the CNR improved by 6.53 to 16.34 times, COV improved by 6.55 to 18.28 times, and the NNPS improved by 10-2 mm2 on average. In conclusion, our approach shows significant potential in enhancing CT image quality with anthropomorphic phantoms, thus addressing the noise issue and improving diagnostic accuracy.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The presence of bias in artificial intelligence has garnered increased attention, with inequities in algorithmic performance being exposed across the fields of criminal justice, education, and welfare services. In health care, the inequitable performance of algorithms across demographic groups may widen health inequalities. OBJECTIVE: Here, we identify and characterize bias in cardiology algorithms, looking specifically at algorithms used in the management of heart failure. METHODS: Stage 1 involved a literature search of PubMed and Web of Science for key terms relating to cardiac machine learning (ML) algorithms. Papers that built ML models to predict cardiac disease were evaluated for their focus on demographic bias in model performance, and open-source data sets were retained for our investigation. Two open-source data sets were identified: (1) the University of California Irvine Heart Failure data set and (2) the University of California Irvine Coronary Artery Disease data set. We reproduced existing algorithms that have been reported for these data sets, tested them for sex biases in algorithm performance, and assessed a range of remediation techniques for their efficacy in reducing inequities. Particular attention was paid to the false negative rate (FNR), due to the clinical significance of underdiagnosis and missed opportunities for treatment. RESULTS: In stage 1, our literature search returned 127 papers, with 60 meeting the criteria for a full review and only 3 papers highlighting sex differences in algorithm performance. In the papers that reported sex, there was a consistent underrepresentation of female patients in the data sets. No papers investigated racial or ethnic differences. In stage 2, we reproduced algorithms reported in the literature, achieving mean accuracies of 84.24% (SD 3.51%) for data set 1 and 85.72% (SD 1.75%) for data set 2 (random forest models). For data set 1, the FNR was significantly higher for female patients in 13 out of 16 experiments, meeting the threshold of statistical significance (-17.81% to -3.37%; P<.05). A smaller disparity in the false positive rate was significant for male patients in 13 out of 16 experiments (-0.48% to +9.77%; P<.05). We observed an overprediction of disease for male patients (higher false positive rate) and an underprediction of disease for female patients (higher FNR). Sex differences in feature importance suggest that feature selection needs to be demographically tailored. CONCLUSIONS: Our research exposes a significant gap in cardiac ML research, highlighting that the underperformance of algorithms for female patients has been overlooked in the published literature. Our study quantifies sex disparities in algorithmic performance and explores several sources of bias. We found an underrepresentation of female patients in the data sets used to train algorithms, identified sex biases in model error rates, and demonstrated that a series of remediation techniques were unable to address the inequities present.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: Amino acid positron emission tomography (PET) examinations using anti-1-amino-3-[18F]-fluorocyclobutane-1-carboxylic acid ([18F]FACBC) were allowed for routine clinical use in July 2024. However, phantom test procedures for [18F]FACBC reconstruction parameters have not yet been established. The present study aimed to establish new phantom test procedures for [18F]FACBC brain PET imaging to determine optimal reconstruction parameters. METHODS: Background (BG) activity as well as hot sphere and target-to-background ratios (TBRs) of [18F]FACBC were estimated based on brain activity and tumor-to-normal tissue ratios (TNR) in a Japanese clinical trial of [18F]FACBC. Phantom experiments proceeded under [18F]FACBC or L-[methyl-11C]-methionine ([11C]MET) conditions. The number of iterations and the Gaussian filter parameters were determined from the reconstruction parameters %contrastmean and coefficients of variation (CVs) in ordered subset expectation maximization (OSEM) and time-of-flight (TOF) with or without point-spread-function (PSF) correction. RESULTS: The amounts of activity in the hot spheres and BG were 1.1 and 5.5 kBq/mL, respectively, and the TBR was 5.0 at the start of acquisition. The %contrastmean of all hot spheres was higher with [18F]FACBC than [11C]MET, and %contrastmean converged between 4 and 6 iterations in hot spheres with diameters < 10 mm. We used four iterations for OSEM + TOF and five for OSEM + TOF + PSF correction for [18F]FACBC and [11C]MET images. The CV was higher for [18F]FACBC than [11C]MET. The optimal sizes of Gaussian filters for OSEM + TOF and OSEM + TOF + PSF correction of image reconstruction were 5 mm for [18F]FACBC, and 4 and 3 mm, respectively, for [11C]MET images. CONCLUSIONS: We estimated phantom activity and TBR based on brain activity in a Japanese clinical trial and established new phantom test procedures for [18F]FACBC. We recommend that the optimal reconstruction parameters for [18F]FACBC should be set to the same number of iterations as [11C]MET and that the FWHM of Gaussian filter should have a few mm higher than [11C]MET to reduce image noise from brain normal tissue.

RESUMEN

The blending degree between virgin asphalt and aged asphalt has a significant effect on road performance of reclaimed asphalt mixture. This study presented an innovative examination of blending behavior between virgin asphalt and aged asphalt incorporating a new bio-based warm-mix rejuvenator (BWR) by utilizing Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). Through analyzing the variation of several micro-morphology parameters between virgin asphalt and aged asphalt (or recycled asphalt) after blending, an index of regenerative blending degree (RBD) was proposed to quantitatively evaluate their blending behavior, and the effect of various blending temperatures and durations on regenerative blending degree was investigated. The results show that the regenerative blending degree between virgin asphalt and aged asphalt was higher than that between virgin asphalt and recycled asphalt under the same blending condition. A clear linear correlation was observed between the regenerative blending degree calculated by 3D micro-morphology parameters and the dosage of bio-based warm-mix rejuvenator in recycled asphalt, with a correlation coefficient of 0.98. With the increase in blending duration, the regenerative blending degree between virgin asphalt and recycled asphalt increased first and then decreased, but continued to improve with the increase in blending temperature, which indicates that a higher blending temperature and prolonging the blending duration properly have a positive effect on the blending processing between virgin asphalt and recycled asphalt. Compared with the regenerative blending degree calculated by 2D micro-morphology parameters, the regenerative blending degree calculated by 3D micro-morphology parameters is more reasonable to quantify the blending behavior between virgin asphalt and recycled asphalt.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed to acquire an image quality consistent with that of full-dose chest computed tomography (CT) when obtaining low-dose chest CT images and to analyze the effects of block-matching and 3D (BM3D) filters on lung density measurements and noise reduction in lung parenchyma. METHODS: Using full-dose chest CT images, we evaluated lung density measurements and noise reduction in lung parenchyma images for low-dose chest CT. Three filters (median, Wiener, and the proposed BM3D) were applied to low-dose chest CT images for comparison and analysis with images from full-dose chest CT. To evaluate lung density measurements, we measured CT attenuation at the 15th percentile of the lung CT histogram. The coefficient of variation (COV) and contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) were used to evaluate the noise level. RESULTS: The 15th percentile of the lung CT histogram showed the smallest difference between full- and low-dose CT when applying the BM3D filter, and the highest difference between full- and low-dose CT without filters (full-dose =  - 926.28 ± 0.32, BM3D =  - 926.65 ± 0.32, and low-dose =  - 959.43 ± 0.95) (p < 0.05). The COV was smallest when applying the BM3D filter, whereas the CNR was the highest (p < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The results of the study prove that the BM3D filter can reduce image noise while increasing the reproducibility of the lung density, even for low-dose chest CT.

RESUMEN

Objectives. Addressing the prevalent issue of size misfits in large-scale issued firefighter uniforms due to diverse and complex body morphologies, this article presents an objective method for intelligent garment sizing matching without subjective weighting. Methods. The method employs criteria importance through inter-criteria correlation (CRITIC) and the catastrophe progression method (CPM) for more accurate and reliable sizing. Traditional methods, reliant on limited indicators such as height and chest girth and often subjectively determined by experts, are prone to reliability concerns. Matching decisions made based on our approach are evidence-based, transparent and reproducible, thus minimizing subjectivity and expert intervention. Results. A case study of 388 cases validates the method's efficacy in providing garment size recommendations, surpassing traditional experience-based approaches by reducing subjective bias. Conclusion. Despite some differences, the optimal alternatives for examinees are almost consistent across the different methods. Compared with traditional subjective weighting methods, this method has potential advantages in situations such as large-scale matching of firefighter protective clothing where individual customization or direct try-on is not feasible.

RESUMEN

Speckle noise in ultrasound images (UIs) significantly reduces the accuracy of disease diagnosis. The aim of this study was to quantitatively evaluate its feasibility in salivary gland ultrasound imaging by modeling the adaptive non-local means (NLM) algorithm. UIs were obtained using an open-source device provided by SonoSkills and FUJIFILM Healthcare Europe. The adaptive NLM algorithm automates optimization by modeling the isotropic search window, eliminating the need for manual configuration in conventional NLM methods. The coefficient of variation (COV), contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), and edge rise distance (ERD) were used as quantitative evaluation parameters. UIs of the salivary glands revealed evident visualization of the internal echo shape of the malignant tumor and calcification line using the adaptive NLM algorithm. Improved COV and CNR results (approximately 4.62 and 2.15 times, respectively) compared with noisy images were achieved. Additionally, when the adaptive NLM algorithm was applied to the UIs of patients with salivary gland sialolithiasis, the noisy images and ERD values were calculated almost similarly. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the applicability of the adaptive NLM algorithm in optimizing search window parameters for salivary gland UIs.

RESUMEN

The drive of resilient city explores a new path for urban governance in the context of risk society, and China's demonstration city of safe development (DCSD) policies are the indigenous practice of resilient city idea. This paper used text mining technology and PMC-index model to establish an evaluation system for DCSD policies. Then eight representative sample DCSD policies were assessed. The results show that the average PMC-index scores 5.38 and reaches a great consistency grade. Nine model indicators indicate that the Chinese government has a clear policy focus on the efforts of DCSD, prefers to use compulsory type policy tools, and fully mobilizes the public to participate in safe city development jointly. Meanwhile, structural imbalance in policy instruments is a prominent disadvantage. The research establishes an evaluation system for DCSD policies, and provides a new perspective for the explorations of resilient cities worldwide. The extensive applicability of the policy evaluation model needs to be studied in depth in the future.

RESUMEN

Background: The current clinical practice lacks sufficient objective indicators for evaluating thyroid-associated ophthalmopathy (TAO). This study aims to quantitatively assess TAO by evaluating levator palpebrae superioris (LPS) using Dixon-T2WI. Methods: The retrospective study included 231 eyes (119 patients) in the TAO group and 78 eyes (39 volunteers) in the normal group. Dixon-T2WI provided data on maximum thickness of LPS (LPS_T) and signal intensity ratio (LPS_SIR) between the muscle and ipsilateral brain white matter. TAO diagnosis and assessment of its activity and severity were quantitatively determined using LPS_T and LPS_SIR. Results: In the TAO group, LPS_T and LPS_SIR were higher than those in the normal group (p < 2.2e-16). The upper lid retraction (ULR) ≥ 2 mm group exhibited higher LPS_T and LPS_SIR compared to the ULR < 2 mm and normal groups. Optimal diagnostic performance was achieved with an AUC of 0.91 for LPS_T (cutoff: 1.505 mm) and 0.81 for LPS_SIR (cutoff: 1.170). LPS_T (p = 2.8e-07) and LPS_SIR (p = 3.9e-12) in the active phase were higher than in the inactive phase. LPS_T and LPS_SIR showed differences among the mild, moderate-to-severe, and sight-threatening groups (p < 0.05). ROC showed an AUC of 0.70 for LPS_T (cutoff: 2.095 mm) in judging the active phase, and 0.78 for LPS_SIR (cutoff: 1.129). For judging the moderate-to-severe and above, AUC was 0.76 for LPS_T (cutoff: 2.095 mm) and 0.78 for LPS_SIR (cutoff: 1.197). Conclusion: The maximum thickness and SIR of LPS provide imaging indicators for assisting in the diagnosis and quantitative evaluation of TAO.

RESUMEN

Green hydrogen generated via water electrolysis using photovoltaics or wind has begun to scale up in the process of achieving the global net-zero goal, but there is a lack of research on its impact on the scarcity of water resources and water saving potential. A water resources impact assessment framework for green hydrogen scale-up development is established, integrating the product water footprint and regional water footprint scarcity impacts and advancing the study of the water resources impacts on green hydrogen from water conservation as well as from a sustainable context. The research framework specifies the cradle-to-gate life cycle water consumption of hydrogen production, establishes the water scarcity footprint based on the available water remaining (AWARE) model, quantifies the water saving intensity and potential of the green hydrogen alternative to traditional hydrogen production, and proposes quantitative indicators of the water saving benefit. Taking the regions of 31 provinces in China as a case study, the wind-tohydrogen scenario and the solar-tohydrogen scenario will generate approximately 68.86×108 m3 and 126.10×108 m3 water scarcity footprints, respectively. Under the coal-tohydrogen baseline scenario, approximately 1.68×108 m3 and - 0.57×108 m3 of water saving potential will be generated. In addition, the water saving intensity decreases from west to east. According to the adjusted quantitative indicators of water saving benefits, the wind-tohydrogen scenario in China can reach 40.22×108 m3eq and the water saving benefit is more obvious in northern regions such as Hebei, Ningxia and Inner Mongolia. The methodological framework can be applied to other countries or regions to assess the sustainable impacts of green hydrogen production on water resources in a given region.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: To explore the role of quantitative evaluation using carotid ultrasonography (US)-based high-frame-rate vector flow (V Flow) imaging in patients with low carotid stenosis. METHODS: This single-centre cross-sectional study consecutively recruited volunteers without carotid plaque and patients with low carotid stenosis from August 2022 to May 2023. Patients were divided into symptomatic and asymptomatic groups according to their head CT or MRI results within 8 weeks. All V Flow imaging examinations were performed using a Mindray Resona R9 US system. The wall shear stress (WSS) values, oscillatory shear index (OSI) values, and turbulence (Tur) indexes in the normal common carotid artery (CCA), normal carotid bifurcation (CB), and on the upstream and downstream surface of carotid plaque were measured. Pearson Chi-square test and Fisher exact test were used for counting data according to their type. For measurement data, independent sample t test and non-parametric rank sum test were used. RESULTS: The results proved that patients have higher WSS values and Tur indexes of CB than volunteers, and higher WSS values were detected on the surface of the plaques in symptomatic patients. What's more, the downstream side of the plaque was more vulnerable to plaque rupture than the upstream side due to more dynamic blood flow. CONCLUSION: Therefore, carotid US-based high-frame-rate V Flow imaging provides reliable mechanical biomarkers for assessing the haemodynamic change in patients with low stenosis. Our study may provide a new imaging tool for monitoring the progression of atherosclerosis and aiding the management of early atherosclerotic patients. ADVANCES IN KNOWLEDGE: Our study firstly investigated the difference of V Flow parameters on the surface of carotid plaques between symptomatic and asymptomatic patients with low carotid stenosis, which is expected to provide haemodynamic information and the mechanical basis for plaque rupture.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The results of a quantitative analysis of computed tomography (CT) of interstitial lung disease (ILD) using a computer-aided detection (CAD) technique were correlated with the results of pulmonary function tests. PURPOSE: To evaluate the correlation between a quantitative analysis of CT of progressive fibrosing interstitial lung disease (PF-ILD) including idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) and non-IPF, which can manifest progressive pulmonary fibrosis and the vital capacity (VC), and to identify indicators for the assessment of a decreased VC. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 73 patients (46 patients with IPF and 27 patients with non-IPF) were included in this study. Associations between the quantitative analysis of CT and the %VC using a CAD software program were investigated using Spearman's rank correlation and a logistic regression analysis. The appropriate cutoff vale for predicting a decreased VC was determined (%VC <80) and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated. RESULTS: A multiple logistic regression analysis showed that the total extent of interstitial pneumonia on CT was a significant indicator of a decreased VC (P = 0.0001; odds ratio [OR]=1.15; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.06-1.27 in IPF and P = 0.0025; OR=1.16; 95% CI=1.03-1.30 in non-IPF). The cutoff values of the total extent of interstitial pneumonia in IPF and non-IPF for predicting a decreased VC were determined to be 23.3% and 21.5%, and the AUCs were 0.83 and 0.91, respectively. CONCLUSION: A quantitative analysis of CT of PF-ILD using a CAD software program could be useful for predicting a decreased VC.

RESUMEN

In recent years, diseases such as age-related macular degeneration and retinal pigment degeneration caused by excessive exposure to short-wavelength visible light have become significant concerns. With the aim of quantitatively evaluating the toxicity of short-wavelength light, proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) accumulation at the irradiation site was investigated using live cell imaging techniques to irradiate individual living cells with short-wavelength laser light. By examining the dependency of PCNA accumulation on the irradiation site within the cells and their cell cycle, it was observed that PCNA accumulation occurred only when the cell nucleus of cells in the S phase of the cell cycle was irradiated. We investigated the accumulation of PCNA at the laser irradiation site using laser light at wavelengths of 405 nm and 375 nm, with intensities ranging from 0.5 µW to 9.0 µW. The results confirmed an increase in PCNA accumulation with increasing intensity, and a higher accumulation was observed with laser light irradiation at a wavelength of 375 nm compared to 405 nm. By comparing the PCNA accumulation and 24 h cell viability, we demonstrated the feasibility of quantitatively assessing laser light toxicity through the measurement of PCNA accumulation.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This study aimed to use MRI histogram analysis to routine MRI sequences to evaluate lumbar disc degeneration (LDD), illustrate the correlation between this novel method and the traditional Pfirrmann classification method, and more importantly, perform comprehensive agreement analysis of MRI histogram analysis in various situations to evaluate its objectivity and stability. METHODS: Lumbar MRI images from 133 subjects were included in this study. LDD was classified into grades by Pfirrmann classification and was measured as peak separation value by MRI histogram analysis. Correlation analysis between the two methods was performed and cutoff values were determined. In addition, the agreement analysis of peak separation value was performed by intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC) in four scenarios, including inter-resolution, inter-observer, inter-regions of interest (ROI) and inter-slice. RESULTS: Peak separation values were strongly correlated with Pfirrmann grades (r = - 0.847). The inter-resolution agreements of peak separation value between original image resolution of 2304 × 2304 and compressed image resolutions (1152 × 1152, 576 × 576, 288 × 288) were good to excellent (ICCs were 0.916, 0.876 and 0.822), except 144 × 144 was moderate (ICC = 533). The agreements of inter-observer (ICC = 0.982) and inter-ROI (ICC = 0.915) were excellent. Compared with the mid-sagittal slice, the inter-slice agreements were good for the first adjacent slices (ICCs were 0.826 and 0.844), and moderate to good for the second adjacent slices (ICC = 0.733 and 0.753). CONCLUSION: MRI histogram analysis, used in routine MRI sequences, demonstrated a strong correlation with Pfirrmann classification and good agreements in various scenarios, expanding the range of application and providing an effective, objective and quantitative tool to evaluate LDD.
