RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Platelet distribution width (PDW), but not platelet count, was found to more comprehensively reflect platelet activity. The present study, thus, aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of PDW to lymphocyte ratio (PDWLR) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following hepatectomy. METHODS: Patients following hepatectomy were analyzed retrospectively. The Kaplan-Meier survival curves and Cox regression model were used to determine the prognostic value of PDWLR. RESULTS: 241 patients were analyzed eventually, and stratified into low and high PDWLR groups (≤ 9.66 vs. > 9.66). Results of comparing the baseline characteristics showed that high PDWLR was significantly associated with cirrhosis, and intraoperative blood loss (all P < 0.05). In multivariate COX regression analysis, PDWLR was demonstrated as an independent risk factor for OS (HR: 1.549, P = 0.041) and RFS (HR: 1.655, P = 0.005). Moreover, PDWLR demonstrated a superior capacity for predicting prognosis compared to other indicators. CONCLUSION: Preoperative PDWLR has a potential value in predicting the prognosis of HCC patients following hepatectomy, which may help in clinical decision-making for individual treatment.

RESUMEN

The study was carried out to correlate the inflammatory markers (NLR, ELR, PLR) before and after endoscopic sinus surgery and their role in the prediction of recurrent nasal polyps. This was a hospital-based observational study carried out the 43 patients, aged between 18-45 years, admitted to the department of ENT with CRSwNP and underwent endoscopic sinus surgery. NLR, ELR & PLR values were compared for each patient and calculated from complete blood counts taken before and after surgery follow-up period at post-op 1st week, 3rd week, 3rd month, and 6th month. In our study, 12 out of 43 patients who underwent ESS showed recurrence. The mean value of ELR was higher in the pre-operative and post-operative 1st week in recurrent nasal polyp patients than in non-recurrent nasal polyps. (p-value < 0.05) but there were no significant changes in ELR values in subsequent follow-ups. There were no significant changes in NLR & PLR in the pre-operative and post-operative periods. Although recurrence was common in CRSwNP after endoscopic sinus surgery. Inflammatory markers could be used to predict the chances of recurrence. In our study, ELR is a better parameter than NLR and PLR in the assessment of the chance of recurrence.

BACKGROUND: Esophageal carcinoma is an invasive malignancy with a poor prognosis. Inflammatory cells are related to the prognosis in many malignancies; however, the prognostic values of preoperative neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), lymphocyte-monocyte ratio (LMR) and platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) in esophageal squamous cell carcinomas (ESCCs) are contentious. METHODS: We performed a retrospective study on 178 patients who had proven ESCC and underwent R0 resection. A complete peripheral blood cell count on all patients 1 week before surgery was used to calculate NLR, LMR and PLR. All patients were grouped by the median count of NLR, LMR and PLR respectively. Kaplan-Meier curves were adopted to test the difference of overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) between the high group of NLR, LMR and PLR and the low group. All data analysis was performed by SPSS. P<0.05 was assigned to admit statistical significance. RESULTS: The median follow-up after the surgery was 39 months. The preoperative LMR showed no significant association with the OS [hazard ratio (HR) =0.733, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.397-1.353, P=0.321] and DFS (HR =0.850, 95% CI: 0.491-1.473, P=0.562). Neither NLR nor PLR exhibited a significant correlation with OS or DFS. CONCLUSIONS: NLR, LMR, and PLR could not take the roles of prognostic biomarkers for patients with operable ESCCs.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We sought to determine whether Neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) or platelet-lymphocyte ratio (PLR) were associated with outcomes of patients undergoing surgery for a hepatopancreatico-biliary (HPB) malignancy. METHOD: Between 2000 and 2013, 452 patients who underwent an HPB procedure for a malignant indication were identified. Clinicopathological characteristics, NLR, and PLR, as well as short- and long-term outcomes were analyzed. High NLR and PLR were classified using a cut-off value of 5 and 190, respectively, based on ROC curve analysis. RESULTS: Patients with low versus high NLR and PLR had similar baseline characteristics with regard to performance status and tumor stage (all P > 0.05). Elevated PLR (HR = 1.40) tends to be association with shorter recurrence-free survival (RFS) (P = 0.05), whereas NLR was not a predictor of shorter RFS. Differently, both elevated NLR (HR = 1.94) and PLR (HR = 1.79) were associated with worse overall survival (OS) (both P < 0.05). Patients with NLR ≥5 and those with PLR ≥190 had a significantly shorter OS compared to patients with NLR <5 and PLR <190, respectively (log-rank test, both P < 0.05). Moreover, patients who had both NLR and PLR elevated had worse OS compared to patients with either one or none inflammatory markers elevated (log-rank P = 0.02). CONCLUSION: Elevated NLR and PLR were predictors of worse long-term outcome among patients with HPB malignancy undergoing resection.
