RESUMEN

Groundwater nitrate (NO3-) contamination is a global concern. The distribution patterns, enrichment mechanisms, and human health risks of NO3- contaminated groundwater were investigated using 144 groundwater samples collected from domestic and irrigation wells in the piedmonts of the North China Plain (Beijing and Shijiazhuang areas). The results showed that the groundwater was neutral to weakly alkaline, and 47% of the groundwater samples had NO3- concentrations exceeding 50 mg/L, a threshold proposed by world health organization to threaten infants up to 3 months. Groundwater NO3- concentrations were generally higher in the Beijing piedmont than in the Shijiazhuang piedmont and decreased with depth in both piedmonts. High-NO3- (> 50 mg/L) groundwater was distributed sporadically spatially and mainly was of Ca-Mg-HCO3 hydrochemical facies. Stable isotopes (D and 18O) compositions and NO3-/Cl- ratios indicated that NO3- accumulation in groundwater was primarily due to use of N-fertilizers under agricultural practices, and was associated with groundwater recharge sources such as septic tank leakage and re-infiltration of reclaimed irrigation water. Water quality evaluation showed that groundwater quality was highly dependent on NO3- concentration, with entropy-weighted water quality index values increasing linearly with increasing NO3- concentrations. The potential health risk of high-NO3- groundwater was the most serious for infants in both the piedmonts. Therefore, reducing NO3- input from sources and drinking water intake is recommended to minimize the human health risk.

RESUMEN

Rivers in agricultural countries widely suffer from diffuse nitrate (NO3-) pollution. Although pollution sources and fates of riverine NO3- have been reported worldwide, the driving mechanisms of riverine NO3- pollution associated with mineral dissolution in piedmont zones remain unclear. This study combined hydrogeochemical compositions, stable isotopes (δ18O-NO3-, δ15N-NO3-, δ18O-H2O, and δ2H-H2O), and molecular bioinformation to determine the pollution sources, biogeochemical evolution, and natural attenuation of riverine NO3- in a typical piedmont zone (Qingshui River). High NO3- concentration (37.5 ± 9.44 mg/L) was mainly observed in the agricultural reaches of the river, with ~15.38 % of the samples exceeding the acceptable limit for drinking purpose (44 mg/L as NO3-) set by the World Health Organization. Ammonium inputs, microbial nitrification, and HNO3-induced calcite dissolution were the dominant driving factors that control riverine NO3- contamination in the piedmont zone. Approximately 99.4 % of riverine NO3- contents were derived from NH4+-containing pollutants, consisted of manure & domestic sewage (74.0 % ± 13.0 %), NH4+-synthetic fertilizer (16.1 % ± 8.99 %), and soil organic nitrogen (9.35 % ± 4.49 %). These NH4+-containing pollutants were converted to HNO3 (37.2 ± 9.38 mg/L) by nitrifying bacteria, and then the produced HNO3 preferentially participated in the carbonate (mainly calcite) dissolution, which accounted for 40.0 % ± 12.1 % of the total riverine Ca2+ + Mg2+, also resulting in the rapid release of NO3- into the river water. Thus, microbial nitrification could be a new and non-negligible contributor of riverine NO3- pollution, whereas the involvement of HNO3 in calcite dissolution acted as an accelerator of riverine NO3- pollution. However, denitrification had lesser contribution to natural attenuation for high NO3- pollution. The obtained results indicated that the mitigation of riverine NO3- pollution should focus on the management of ammonium discharges, and the HNO3-induced carbonate dissolution needs to be considered in comprehensively understanding riverine NO3- pollution in piedmont zones.

RESUMEN

Reference conditions are difficult to find in the Anthropocene but essential for effective biodiversity conservation. Aquatic ecosystems in the Andes-Amazon transition zone of Colombia are now at high risk due to expanded human activities after peace agreements in 2016 ended armed conflict because lands formerly controlled by FARC and other armed groups are now prone to agricultural and urban expansion. Particularly, expanding human land use may reduce fish diversity across the altitudinal gradient, especially in the premontane streams (i.e., <500 m a.s.l.) because lands are more amenable to human use than at greater altitudes. We evaluated fish α-diversity (measured as species richness, total abundance, and effective species number) and ß-diversity (spatial and temporal) in 12 sites over 8 years bracketing the end of armed conflict. All α-diversity and ß-diversity analyses were evaluated relative to categorical altitude (< or >500 m) and continuous altitude. Strong differences in fish community structure among sites occurred as a function of altitude. Fish communities exhibit altitudinal biodiversity gradients that are consistent in space and time, and that need to be accounted for conservation and management considerations. Our results provide a reference to identify short- and long-term changes due to impending human land use at a critical moment for the conservation of tropical fish diversity. Similar studies in other areas of the upper Amazon Basin are needed to evaluate effects of subsequent human activities on diversity patterns and our study area to compare to reference conditions reported here.

RESUMEN

Abstract The current focus is on the overall pattern of seed storage present in the fragments of the soil of piedmont and alluvial landscapes of the environment. The present study predicted the seed banks of both soils of alluvial and piedmont zones in different ecological conditions and evaluate the potential of seeds in the restoration of both environments. The composition of the seed bank of soil is mainly affected by the alluvial environment and the structure of cleared area shows that more species of germinating annual grasses and growable seeds with the higher total number. Extant vegetation structures have an important role in the diversity of soil seed reservoirs, whose composition corresponded with the openness of the site. When in situ soil seed bank is recruited, it helps to restore only some components of the plant community in an alluvial environment. In our current research, it was confirmed that seed richness was higher in number at lower elevation (alluvial) than that at high elevation (piedmont). Seed richness showed a significant negative correlation with anions, cations, while significantly positive with altitude that suggests the richness pattern of the overall seed bank of the area is influenced by various environmental factors.

Data are needed to assess the relationships between urbanization and biodiversity to establish conservation priorities. However, many of these relationships are difficult to fully assess using traditional research methods. To address this gap and evaluate new acoustic sensors and associated data, we conducted a multimethod analysis of biodiversity in a rapidly urbanizing county: Greenville, South Carolina, USA. We conducted audio recordings at 25 points along a development gradient. At the same locations, we used refugia tubes, visual assessments, and an online database. Analysis focused on species identification of both audio and visual data at each point along the trail to determine relationships between both herpetofauna and acoustic indices (as proxies for biodiversity) and environmental gradient of land use and land cover. Our analysis suggests the use of a multitude of different sampling methods to be conducive to the completion of a more comprehensive occupancy measure. Moving forward, this research protocol can potentially be useful in the establishment of more effective wildlife occupancy indices using acoustic sensors to move toward future conservation policies and efforts concerning urbanization, forest fragmentation, and biodiversity in natural, particularly forested, ecosystems.

RESUMEN

Ecosystem services (ESs) associated with surficial processes may change according to shifts in land use, land cover, and climate parameters. Estimating these shifts can be important for land development planning, as urbanization alters soil processes that can manifest legacy effects. We employed the InVEST suite of models for sediment retention, nutrient delivery, and carbon storage to postulate how these ESs will change in the Upstate of South Carolina under future precipitation and land use and land cover (LULC) scenarios. We used the average precipitation from 1981-2010 and WorldClim precipitation projections for 2021-2040 and 2041-2060 to embody climatic precipitation shifts. For our LULC scenarios, we used 2011 and 2016 NLCD landscapes, then projected future LULC to hypothesize four future scenarios. We found that for the ES models that included both precipitation and LULC as inputs, precipitation dictated ES delivery far more heavily than land use or land cover. LULC scenarios produced consistent changes in ES delivery for all models except sediment export. Phosphorus and sediment exports increased between 2011 and 2016 due to LULC change, while nitrogen export stayed the same and carbon storage decreased. Land development that prioritizes forest cover will cause the least change in ESs, but allowing for continued forest loss to low-density development will have the most intense implications for ESs. Prioritization of land uses that preserve ESs associated with surficial processes will be critical to the longevity of agriculture and ecosystem integrity in this rapidly developing region. Land development planners should integrate consideration of ESs associated with surficial processes into future regional planning.

RESUMEN

This petrographic database is a compilation made to study the Oligocene-Langhian succession of the Arquata Scrivia area, consisting of different shallow to deep-water marine sedimentary units deposited in the eastern Tertiary Piedmont Basin (NW Italy). This database is unique for the studied succession, which was not priorly investigated for the petrographic content of its component units. The samples were collected from lower, middle and upper parts of each sedimentary unit and analyzed for identifying their petrographic composition via qualitative and quantitative methods by means of polarized-light microscope. The collected petrographic data are presented within quartz-feldspar-lithic ternary plots. Even though these data are elementary analytical outputs, they represent the starting point for future analyses in order to understand the evolution of the basin on a larger scale.

RESUMEN

Purpose: The study's objective is to assess the environmental performance of rice production in Northern Italy, in particular in Piedmont, the first Italian and European district for the rice-growing area, and thus identify the most critical hotspots and agricultural processes. In particular, as a case study, a farm located in Vercelli (VC) has been chosen. Subsequently, the study results were compared with other different cultivation practices to evaluate the most sustainable choice. Methods: The application of the LCA has been performed, highlighting the phases of rice production that have the most significant impact. Then, uncertainty and sensitivity analyses have been made to estimate the robustness of the results and assess the influence of changing some input variables on emission reduction. Finally, multivariate statistical, specifically a principal component analysis (PCA), was conducted to aid the interpretation of the output dataset of this case study. LCA, uncertainty analysis, and sensitivity analysis were performed with SimaPro 9.2.0, using ReCiPe 2016 Midpoint (H) methodology, and PCA with R software. Results and discussions: The hotspot with the highest environmental load is irrigation, which compared to the other phases impacts more in 15 out of 18 categories, including 12 with impacts greater than + 75%. This is because irrigation causes direct impacts, related to the methanogenesis in rice fields, but also indirect impacts related mainly to the production of the energy mix required to move the large masses of irrigation water. Therefore, different water management systems were compared and results show that the irrigation systems based on intermittent paddy submergence (DSI) could result in - 40% lower impacts, resulting to be the preferable technique over the other irrigation systems analyzed, including the traditional one used in this study. Conclusions: In order to reduce the environmental impacts related to the irrigation process, a water management system characterized by intermittent flooding of the paddy field (DSI) could be used as it reduces the environmental impacts the most (- 40%), while the least suitable system is one characterized by continuous flooding without drought periods, as it causes the highest impacts.

This study presents an updated checklists of the fish species recorded in the Ucayali River basin, Peru, from published and unpublished data. Ucayali River basin shows a rich and diversified ichthyofauna, with 734 species distributed in 15 orders, 49 families and 292 genera. It is composed by miniature fishes (4 %, < 2.6 cm of standard length), small fishes (39 %), medium fishes (41 %), large fishes (13 %) and giants (3 %). The dominant groups are Characiformes (312 species, 43.0 %), Siluriformes (270 species, 36.8 %), Gymnotiformes (51 species, 6.9 %) and Cichliformes (50 species, 6.8 %). Part of the ichthyofauna is shared with the adjacent basins as Marañón and Amazon, mainly in the confluence area, which contribute to the highest diversity of fishes in the Ucayali basin. High diversity of fishes with restricted distribution was observed, among them Orestias, Astroblepus, Trichomycterus, Hemibrycon genera that occur in the headwaters. Estimates of species richness considering their distribution per 100 m of altitude, show that the Ucayali basin is underestimated, expecting to find up to 1125 species. The results presented here are background information that will contribute to decision-making for conservation and sustainable development purposes in the Amazon region.

RESUMEN

PURPOSE: This cross-sectional study aims to evaluate the actual prevalence of telemedicine, with a particular attention to teleophthalmology programs, in the Piedmont region of Northern Italy and investigate the prospects of the discipline, comparing the situation with the rest of Italy. Information about the current teleophthalmological development is important to assess the state-of-the-art of innovation in medicine in different areas of the world so that there can be a healthy comparison and evaluation of progress and backlog. METHODS: We sent questionnaires to every Local Healthcare Authority and gathered the answers in five distinct categories. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we collected information by telephone. We investigated five primary areas: what type of telemedicine services are currently in operation, how they are managed, the presence of any evaluation of patient satisfaction and cost-savings, and the prospects of future teleophthalmology programs to be implemented. RESULTS: Only 2% of the total telemedicine programs are in the field of ophthalmology. The greater parts are in the field of cardiology (15%) and endocrinology (13%). Currently, only one program of teleophthalmology exists in the territory, and at least four more projects are waiting to be approved or funded. Surveys about patient satisfaction were not provided and there was no evidence of cost-saving. CONCLUSIONS: Teleophthalmology in Piedmont is slowly developing, although there is a lack of a unified network for storing and managing patients' data. During the COVID-19 pandemic, telemedicine usage drastically increased, and there is a need to evaluate this trend to understand its place in the future of medicine.

RESUMEN

Monitoring and analysis of groundwater level (GWL) in space and time is one of the tools used to evaluate the quantitative status of groundwater (GW) resources and identify possible alterations and critical cases due to climate change and variability, anthropogenic influences and other driving factors. In this study, four statistical methodologies (trend, change-point, percentile and non-standardized anomaly analyses) were applied for GWL and rainfall (R) analysis in the Piedmont Plain (western Po Plain, NW Italy). To detect the interannual variations in the GW maximum annual amplitude, the coefficient of variation was also used. The aims of the study were 1) to compare the results of different statistical methods, highlighting their applicability and differences to evaluate the quantitative evolution of GW, 2) to identify the relationship between GWL and R, 3) to investigate the spatiotemporal variation in the GWL of shallow aquifers in the Piedmont Plain, and 4) to describe critical situations of GW depletion. The study highlights that the application of a single method for assessing the shallow GW resource status does not always guarantee a reliable evaluation. For this reason, it is advisable to apply different analysis methods at the same time. Completeness of data and medium to long time series are prerequisites for meaningful analyses. The use of the same time interval is always necessary for comparisons between different monitoring wells and between the results of different statistical analyses. Last, by spatializing the results, it was possible to identify areas characterized by similar GWL behaviour due to hydrological structure, climate variability, land use and the evolution of anthropogenic activities over time. These factors influence vary locally in the Piedmont plain and require local assessments to determine the impact of changes in GWL.

RESUMEN

Forested wetland soils within the Piedmont and Coastal Plain physiographic provinces of Northern Virginia (NOVA) were investigated to determine the utility of a handheld colorimeter, the Nix Pro Color Sensor ("Nix"), for predicting carbon contents (TC) and stocks (TC stocks) from on-site color measurements. Both the color variables recorded with each Nix scan ("Nix color variables"; n = 15) and carbon contents significantly differed between sites, with redder soils (higher a and h) at Piedmont sites, and higher TC at sites with darker soils (lower values of L, or lightness; p < 0.05). Nix-carbon correlation analysis revealed strong relationships between L (lightness), X (a virtual spectral variable), R (additive red), and KK (black) and log-transformed TC (Ln[TC]; |r| = 0.70; p < 0.01 for all). Simple linear regressions were conducted to identify how well these four final Nix variables could predict soil carbon. Using all color measurements, about 50% of Ln(TC) variability could be explained by L, X, R, or KK (p < 0.01), yet with higher predictive power obtained for Coastal Plain soils (0.55 < R2 < 0.65; p < 0.01). Regression model strength was maximized between Ln(TC) and the four final Nix variables using simple linear regressions when color measurements observed at a specific depth were first averaged (0.66 < R2 < 0.70; p < 0.01). While further study is warranted to investigate Nix applicability within various soil settings, these results demonstrate potential for the Nix and its soil color measurements to assist with rapid field-based assessments of soil carbon in forested wetlands.

RESUMEN

Civil liability represents one of the main responsibilities for healthcare facilities; it is the legal responsibility of paying money for damage to a person's health. Even though this responsibility plays a key role in the economic sustainability of healthcare facilities, the literature does not enough investigate this responsibility in regional health services. The paper aims to define the evolution of compensation models for health civil liability adopted by regional health services. Through a longitudinal case study, the paper investigates the compensation model by a leading regional health service. The finding highlights the evolution of the compensation model for health civil liability adopted by a leading Regional Health Service from 1990 to 2021. It describes a transition from an insurance model to a mixed model based on self-coverage up to a set economic level, an insurance policy with self-insurance retention and deductible for all claims. The research contributes to the literature and practice throughout the definition of a compensation model for damages based on self-insurance of regional health service and insurance policies. The research promotes a compensation model used by a leading regional health service.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has dramatically hit all Europe and Northern Italy in particular. The reallocation of medical resources has caused a sharp reduction in the activity of many medical disciplines, including urology. The restricted availability of resources is expected to cause a delay in the treatment of urological cancers and to negatively influence the clinical history of many cancer patients. In this study, we describe COVID-19 impact on uro-oncological management in Piedmont/Valle d'Aosta, estimating its future impact. METHODS: We performed an online survey in 12 urological centers, belonging to the Oncological Network of Piedmont/Valle d'Aosta, to estimate the impact of COVID-19 emergency on their practice. On this basis, we then estimated the medical working capacity needed to absorb all postponed uro-oncological procedures. RESULTS: Most centers (77%) declared to be "much"/"very much" affected by COVID-19 emergency. If uro-oncological consultations for newly diagnosed cancers were often maintained, follow-up consultations were more than halved or even suspended in around two out of three centers. In-office and day-hospital procedures were generally only mildly reduced, whereas major uro-oncological procedures were more than halved or even suspended in 60% of centers. To clear waiting list backlog, the urological working capacity should dramatically increase in the next months; delays greater than 1 month are expected for more than 50% of uro-oncological procedures. CONCLUSIONS: COVID-19 emergency has dramatically slowed down uro-oncological activity in Piedmont and Valle d'Aosta. Ideally, uro-oncological patients should be referred to COVID-19-free tertiary urological centers to ensure a timely management.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: COronaVIrus Disease 19 (COVID-19) led to the reorganization of Cardiology Units in terms of working spaces and healthcare personnel. In this scenario, both outpatient visits and elective interventional cardiology procedures were suspended and/or postponed. We aimed to report the impact of COVID-19 on interventional coronary and structural procedures in Piedmont, Italy. METHODS: The number of coronary angiographies (CAG), percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI), primary PCI (pPCI), transcatheter aortic valve replacements (TAVR) and Mitraclip performed in Piedmont between March 1st and April 20th, 2020 (CoV-time) were collected from each catheterization laboratory and compared to the number of procedures performed the year before in the same months (NoCoV-time). RESULTS: Procedural data from 18 catheterization laboratories were collected. Both coronary (5498 versus 2888: difference: -47.5%; mean 305.4 VS 160.4; p = 0.002) and structural (84 versus 17: difference: -79.8%; mean 4.7 Vs 0.9; p < 0.001) procedures decreased during CoV-time compared to NoCoV-time. In particular, coronary angiographies (1782 versus 3460), PCI (1074 versus 1983), p PCI (271 versus 410), TAVR (11 versus 72) and Mitraclip (6 versus 12) showed a reduction of 48.5%, 45.7%, 33.7%, 84.7% and 50.0%, respectively (all p for comparison <0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the same time-period in 2019, both coronary and structural interventional procedures during COVID-19 epidemic suffered a dramatic decrease in Piedmont, Italy. Organizational change and structured clinical pathways should be created, together with awareness campaigns.

RESUMEN

Three predictable patterns of forearm fracture-dislocation-Essex-Lopresti, Monteggia, and Galeazzi-can occur and are eponymously labeled for the investigators who appreciated their unique characteristics and offered a framework by which to understand them. Recognition of these injuries and subsequent investigation and increased understanding of these lesions have resulted in improved understanding about forearm anatomy and stability. Management of the component of instability differs based on the type of fracture-dislocation, the timing of intervention, and surgeon preference. Despite advances in understanding and treating these injuries, nuances of these lesions may remain challenging to modern-day surgeons.

RESUMEN

A new species of Pimelodella is described from western Andean tributaries of the Orinoco River basin. The new species differs from all congeners by a unique set of characters that includes long maxillary barbel, surpassing the dorsal lobe of the caudal fin; relatively short adipose fin (32.8-36.4 of SL); 40-42 total vertebrae; posterior margin of pectoral-fin spine with 12-18 retrorse dentations along basal two thirds; laterosensory canal foramina of dentary and preopercle large and externally conspicuous; a brown faint and narrow midlateral stripe extending from the pseudotympanum, fading posteriorly along the caudal peduncle, and ending as a spot at the caudal-fin base; and dorsal-fin base darkly pigmented, from spinelet to posteriormost interradial membrane. Taxonomic status of P. pallida and presence of P. cruxenti in Colombia are also discussed.

RESUMEN

Merlino Wood is a typical oak-hornbeam forest in the Po Plain hydrographic region. It is one of the few remaining lowland forests in Northern Italy and is a Regional Natural Reserve and a Site of Community Interest (code IT1160010). This is the first survey on hoverflies in the study area and they act as bioindicators to assess habitat conservation. Sampling was performed with three Malaise traps and an entomological net. A total of 61 species of Syrphidae were recorded between March and October 2019. Three of the species observed are considered to be under threat in Europe, three species have been recorded for the first time in Piedmont and Heringia latitarsis (Egger, 1865) has been recorded for the first time in Northern Italy. The Syrph the Net analysis has been used to assess habitat conservation. It shows good preservation of xylosaprophagous species, while the conservation conditions of other larval trophic categories are poor.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: to describe intentional self-harm related deaths in Piedmont Region (Northern Italy) analysing trends by gender, age, area of residence, socio-economic level. DESIGN: descriptive study of mortality using data from the Italian National Institute of Statistics (Istat). SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: resident population in Piedmont Region in the period 2003-2014. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: age-standardized suicide (ICD-10: X60-X84) rates, by gender, health district of residence and educational level; frequencies of suicide method and place of occurrence by gender and age. RESULTS: in a context of declining injury related mortality, especially that due to traffic accidents, the regional trend of suicides shows only a slight decrease, becoming the main cause of injury deaths since 2009, equal to 21% of all injury deaths in the studied period. Among the largest Italian Regions, Piedmont is the one with the highest rate of suicide. There are no significant trend variations related to the recent period of economic crisis. The occurrence is higher among men in general and particularly in older people, persons with low educational level and those living in mountain areas. The main suicide method used by women is "jumping from a high place" (36.7%) while the main one for men is "hanging, strangulation and suffocation" (50%). This is globally the most frequent method for all ages. "Self-poisoning" gains importance between 30 and 49 years old. Suicides occur for over half of cases in home, without any difference by gender and age. CONCLUSION: suicides are a public health and social concern. Yet despite its extent, this problem is still not adequately considered in public health prevention programmes. Important contributions to a deeper understanding of the determinants can be obtained from health information systems, in particular data from emergency care and multiple causes of deaths records.
