Postweaning diarrhoea (PWD) is a frequent multifactorial disease occurring in swine stocks worldwide. Since pathogenic Escherichia (E.) coli play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of PWD and porcine E. coli are often resistant to different antibiotics, colistin is frequently applied to treat piglets with PWD. However, the application of colistin to livestock has been associated with the emergence of colistin resistance. This case report describes the detection of the colistin resistance gene mcr-1-1 in two E. coli isolated from piglets with PWD in an Austrian organic piglet-producing farm, which was managed by two farmers working as nurses in a hospital. Both mcr-1-positive E. coli were further analysed by Illumina short-read-sequencing, including assemblies and gene prediction. Both isolates belonged to the same clonal type and were positive for eaeH and espX5, which are both virulence genes associated with enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC). Due to the detection of mcr-1-positive EPEC and based on the results of the antimicrobial resistance testing, the veterinarian decided to apply gentamicin for treatment instead of colistin, leading to improved clinical signs. In addition, after replacing faba beans with whey, PWD was solely observed in 2/10 weaned batches in the consecutive months.

Porcine Post Weaning Diarrhoea (PWD) is one of the most important swine disease worldwide, caused by Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) strains able to provoke management, welfare and sanitary issues. ETEC is determined by proteinaceous surface appendages. Numerous studies conducted by now in pigs have demonstrated, at the enterocytes level, that, the genes mucin 4 (MUC4) and fucosyltransferase (FUT1), coding for ETEC F4 and F18 receptors respectively, can be carriers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with natural resistance/susceptibility to PWD. The latter aspect was investigated in this study, evaluating the SNPs of the MUC4 and FUT1 genes in slaughtered pigs reared for the most in Central Italy. Genomic DNA was extracted from 362 swine diaphragmatic samples and then was subjected to the detection of known polymorphisms on MUC4 and FUT1candidate target genes by PCR-RFLP. Some of the identified SNPs were confirmed by sequencing analysis. Animals carrying the SNPs associated with resistance were 11% and 86% for the FUT1 and MUC4 genes respectively. Therefore, it can be assumed that the investigated animals may be an important resource and reservoir of favorable genetic traits for the breeding of pigs resistant to enterotoxigenic E.coli F4 variant.

Post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD) is a frequent, multifactorial disease of piglets leading to increased mortality rates and high economic losses. Due to the emergence of multi-resistant Escherichia coli isolates and the ban of zinc oxide (ZnO) in the EU since June 2022, alternative measures to prevent PWD are urgently needed. While an abundance of feed supplements is described to prevent PWD, there are hardly any studies reflecting the current situation of PWD in the field. Thus, we aimed to identify differences in management practices, housing and feeding strategies between farms with PWD and farms without PWD. Data were personally collected using a semi-structured questionnaire in 257 Austrian piglet-producing farms. Farms with PWD in more than 10% of all weaned groups within twelve months prior to data collection were defined as case farms (n = 101), while the remaining 136 farms were defined as control farms. Data from 237 farms and 69 explanatory variables were analysed via penalized binary logistic regression using elastic-net in 100 different splits into randomly selected training and test datasets (80:20). Treatment with ZnO and/or colistin (136 farms) was negatively associated with PWD in all splits and had the biggest estimated absolute log odds ratio out of all tested variables. Implementation of an all-in/all-out system in the nursery units and administration of probiotics or horseradish also had preventive effects in most splits (≥ 97%). A higher number of feeding phases for piglets within the first seven weeks of life and housing on fully slatted floors was associated negatively with the occurrence of PWD as well in > 95% of all splits. PWD was more likely to occur on farms having problems with neonatal diarrhoea or postpartum dysgalactia syndrome. While our data demonstrate that treatment with ZnO or colistin had the biggest statistical effect on PWD, we were able to identify other preventive measures like supplementation with probiotics or horseradish. Since implementation of all-in/all-out measures and fully slatted floors were also negatively associated with the occurrence of PWD on visited farms, we assume that reduction of bacterial load by the implementation of simple hygiene measures are still crucial to prevent PWD.

PURPOSE: This study intends to examine the web accessibility of three tourism supply agents (hotels, travel agents and museums). The results obtained contribute to observing whether there are differences in levels of web accessibility among these tourism supply agents and, based on the problems identified, suggest strategies to overcome these problems. METHODS: To evaluate the level of web accessibility of tourism supply agents, two automatic online tools (AccessMonitor and TAW), which consider Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG), version 2.0, were used. To identify differences among the supply tourism agents in terms of the level of web accessibility, statistical tests (ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis) were used. RESULTS: All the tourism supply agents analysed reveal considerable problems related to web accessibility. The perceivable and robust principles are the two principles of WGAG 2.0 with the greatest number of failures. However, differences among the supply agents analysed are observed. Museums present the highest level of web accessibility, while travel agents have the lowest. Therefore, it is necessary to implement improvements in tourism websites to overcome informational constraints that many people with disabilities (PwD) face in tourism activities. CONCLUSIONS: Due to the central role of the Internet for people with and without disabilities, this study highlights barriers that should be eliminated to facilitate the travel decision-making process, especially for PwD. Consequently, it can contribute to a greater number of people being able to participate in tourism activities, improving their well-being and rehabilitation.Implications for rehabilitationThe participation in tourism activities contributes to improve health, quality-of-life and well-being of all people.For people with disabilities (PwD) to be able to travel, without constraints, access to online information needs to be provided.The identification of the level of web accessibility of tourism supply agents provides important guidelines to improve the websites, facilitating the travel tourism planning of PwD.If informational barriers to access tourism activities are eliminated, the participation of PwD in tourism activities will tend to increase, and consequently improvements in their well-being, health and rehabilitation will happen.

RESUMO Embora o acesso de pessoas com deficiência (PcD) ao trabalho venha se intensificando ante uma tendência global de humanização, a parcela desse segmento populacional formalmente empregada ainda está longe do esperado. Visando problematizar tal cenário, este artigo buscou compreender como as produções científicas têm discutido sobre PcD no contexto de trabalho brasileiro. Mediante revisão sistemática de literatura publicada de 2010 a 2021 nas bases de dados Web of Science, Spell e Periódicos Capes, dentre outros critérios, chegou-se a um corpus de 33 artigos para subsidiar as análises. Por fim, constatou-se que, apesar dos avanços normativos e culturais, persistem algumas barreiras urbanísticas, arquitetônicas, nos transportes, na comunicação e informação, atitudinais e tecnológicas, que desencadeiam dificuldades relacionadas à acessibilidade, ao preconceito e à discriminação. Tais obstáculos dificultam a inclusão das PcD no contexto laboral e demandam ações das organizações que, aliadas a atuações complementares das famílias dessas pessoas e do Estado, têm o potencial de viabilizar efetivas transformações sociais.


ABSTRACT Although the access of people with disabilities (PwD) to work is intensifying due to a global trend of humanization, the portion of this segment that is formally employed is still tiny. In order to problematize such a scenario, this article sought to understand how scientific productions have been discussing PwD in the Brazilian work context. From a systematic review of literature published from 2010 to 2021 in the Web of Science, Spell and CAPES Periodicals databases, among other criteria, a corpus of 33 articles was reached to support the analyses. Finally, it was found that, despite the normative and cultural advances, some urban, architectural, transport, communication and information, attitudinal and technological barriers persist, which trigger difficulties related to accessibility, prejudice and discrimination. Such obstacles make it impossible to include PwD in the work context and demand actions from organizations that, combined with complementary actions by the families of these people and the State, have the potential to enable effective social transformations.

F18 plays an important role in helping Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) binds to specific receptors on small intestinal enterocytes, followed by secreting of toxins causing diarrhea in post-weaning piglets (post-weaning diarrhea, PWD). However, the F18 subunit vaccine is not sufficient to stimulate an immune response that can protect weaning pigs from F18-positive ETEC (F18+ETEC). Recently, a body of evidence shows that flagellin protein (FliC) helps to increase the immunity of fused proteins. Therefore, in this study, we combined FliC with F18 to enhance the immune response of F18. The f18 gene was obtained from F18+ETEC, then was fused with the fliC gene. The expression of recombinant FliC-F18 protein was induced by Isopropyl-beta-D-Thiogalactopyranoside (IPTG). The purified protein was tested in vivo in mouse models to evaluate the immunostimulation. Results showed that the fusion of FliC and F18 protein increased the production of anti-F18 antibodies. Besides, the anti-F18 antibody in the collected antiserum specifically identified F18+ETEC. This result provides proof-of-concept for the development of subunit vaccine to prevent PWD using F18 antigen.

INTRODUCTION: Intermittent claudication (IC) is the most common symptom of peripheral arterial disease (PAD) which presents as a consequence of muscle ischaemia resulting from the atherosclerotic obstruction to arterial flow. High-quality evidence (Lane et al., 2017) shows that exercise programmes provide important benefits compared with usual care in improving pain-free and maximum walking distance in people with IC, but do not improve ankle-brachial pressure index (ABPI). METHODS: Retrospective data were analysed to examine walking and ABPI outcomes for participants who completed a 12-week course of supervised or home-based exercise. All participants had a history of IC. RESULTS: 46 participants (mean age 69±11 years; 76% male; 29% current smokers) referred for exercise were assessed, completed a 12-week course of exercise (home-based or supervised) and subsequently attended for re-assessment. Claudication onset distance (COD) increased by 363% (mean improvement 344.7 ± 265.1m; p < .001) and peak walking distance (PWD) by 324.4% in the supervised exercise group; COD increased by 30.6% (mean improvement 32.8 ± 57.2 m; p = 0.026) and PWD by 31.5% in the home-based exercise group. Resting ABPI for the total cohort significantly improved from 0.82 ± 0.25 at A1 to 0.88 ± 0.25 at A2 (p = 0.027). DISCUSSION: A 12-week course of supervised exercise results in significantly greater walking distance outcomes (COD and PWD) than unmonitored home-based exercise. In contrast with previous findings (Lane et al. 2017), this retrospective study demonstrated a significant improvement in resting ABPI with both supervised exercise as well as home-based exercise. CONCLUSION: A 12-week programme of exercise favourably influenced walking and ABPI outcomes for patients with IC. Both home-based exercise and supervised individualised exercise increased walking distances, but the magnitude of the improvement in walking outcomes was greater in individuals who attended supervised exercise therapy.

Improving vaccination rates among marginalized populations is an important priority among public policy makers and healthcare providers in the United States of America (U.S.). Racial/ethnic minorities have a long history of reduced vaccination rates relative to white Americans (Khan, Hall, Tanner, & Marlow, 2018), while people with disabilities (PWD) have varied rates of vaccine use (Diab & Johnston, 2004; O'Neill, Newall, Antolovich, Lima, & Danchin, 2019). Yet, little is known about vaccine use among individuals who belong to both groups. This study examines the intersectional effects of race/ethnicity and disability on flu vaccine use. We used the 2015-2018 National Health Interview Survey to examine the odds of flu vaccine use by race/ethnicity, disability, and their interaction among adults aged 18+ in the U.S. non-institutionalized, civilian population stratified by age groups. For each unit increase in disability scores, we found a significant race-by-disability interaction for young black adults (18-39 years) who had higher odds of getting the flu vaccine compared to white adults in the same age group. A significant interaction occurred for middle-aged Hispanic vs. white adults (40-64 years) who had higher odds of getting the flu vaccine as their disability scores increased. Black vs. white adults were less likely to get the flu vaccine across all age groups irrespective of disability and other covariates, while results were more mixed among other racial/ethnic groups. Additionally, people with disabilities had higher odds of flu vaccination. Further, race/ethnicity had a moderating effect on the relationship between disability and flu vaccination and an interaction effect occurred between disability and certain racial/ethnic groups when stratified by age.

The accurate recognition of activities is fundamental for following up on the health progress of people with dementia (PwD), thereby supporting subsequent diagnosis and treatments. When monitoring the activities of daily living (ADLs), it is feasible to detect behaviour patterns, parse out the disease evolution, and consequently provide effective and timely assistance. However, this task is affected by uncertainties derived from the differences in smart home configurations and the way in which each person undertakes the ADLs. One adjacent pathway is to train a supervised classification algorithm using large-sized datasets; nonetheless, obtaining real-world data is costly and characterized by a challenging recruiting research process. The resulting activity data is then small and may not capture each person's intrinsic properties. Simulation approaches have risen as an alternative efficient choice, but synthetic data can be significantly dissimilar compared to real data. Hence, this paper proposes the application of Partial Least Squares Regression (PLSR) to approximate the real activity duration of various ADLs based on synthetic observations. First, the real activity duration of each ADL is initially contrasted with the one derived from an intelligent environment simulator. Following this, different PLSR models were evaluated for estimating real activity duration based on synthetic variables. A case study including eight ADLs was considered to validate the proposed approach. The results revealed that simulated and real observations are significantly different in some ADLs (p-value < 0.05), nevertheless synthetic variables can be further modified to predict the real activity duration with high accuracy (R2(pred)>90%).

PURPOSE: This paper critically reviews and reflects on the processes for providing Assistive Technology (AT) services to Persons with Disabilities (PWD) in Bangladesh, India and Nepal. The aim is to investigate the AT service delivery systems in these countries and suggest improvements where weaknesses are identified. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We carried out a descriptive qualitative exploratory study in Bangladesh, India and Nepal by conducting key informant interviews with policymakers (5), AT service providers (22) and mobility and hearing related AT service users (21). We used a directed content analysis approach guided by a seven-point AT service delivery process model to thematically analyse the existing processes for AT service delivery, from first contact through to follow-up and maintenance. RESULTS: AT service delivery processes are sub-optimal in all three countries, and improvements are needed. No common AT service delivery process was found, although there are common features. In general, it is easier for PWDs in India and Nepal to access AT than for those in Bangladesh, but all three countries are failing to live up to their commitments to uphold the human rights of PWDs. CONCLUSIONS: Although good elements of AT service delivery processes can be identified, the systems in all three countries are fragmented and generally weak. A more holistic approach of looking at the process of AT service delivery, from first contact right through to follow-up and device maintenance, with a single door service delivery system, free of cost at the point of service is recommended in these countries. IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATIONAlthough we found significant weaknesses in AT delivery in all three countries, there are some good AT service delivery practices and opportunities for these countries to learn from one another.A systematic and stepwise approach to assessing current AT service delivery processes in the three countries - examining the delivery system as a whole, from initiation to repair and management - can help identify opportunities to improve the process for (prospective) AT users.A more coherent single door system of AT service delivery will increase the quality and efficiency of the fragmented AT service delivery practices in Bangladesh, India and Nepal.

Identifying genes/loci for resistance to pine wilt disease (PWD) caused by the pine wood nematode (PWN) is beneficial for improving resistance breeding in Pinus thunbergii, but to date, genetic information using molecular markers has been limited. Here, we constructed a high-density linkage map using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS) and conducted quantitative trait loci (QTL) analysis for PWD resistance for the self-pollinated progeny of "Namikata 73," which is the most resistant variety among resistant varieties of P. thunbergii, following inoculation tests with PWN. An S1 mapping population consisting of the 116 progenies derived from self-pollination of the resistant variety, "Namikata 73" (resistance rank 5 to PWN), was inoculated with PWN isolate Ka-4 and evaluated for disease symptoms. To construct a high-density linkage map, we used single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) identified by GBS based on next-generation sequencing technology and some anchor DNA markers, expressed sequence tag (EST)-derived SNP markers and EST-derived simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, and genomic SSR markers. The linkage map had 13 linkage groups (LGs) consisting of 2,365 markers including 2,243 GBS-SNP markers over a total map distance of 1968.4 centimorgans (cM). Results from QTL analysis using phenotype data and the linkage map indicated that PWD resistance is controlled by a single locus located on LG-3, as identified in a previous study. This locus showed overdominant genetic action in the present study. With the confirmation of PWD1 in two different mapping populations (present study and a previous study), the locus associated with this region is thought to be a good target for marker-assisted selection in P. thunbergii breeding programs in order to obtain high levels of resistance to PWD caused by PWN.

OBJECTIVE: This purpose of this study was to conduct a rapid review and environmental scan of diabetes online communities (DOCs) to highlight the clinical impact of DOC engagement and provide guidance to health care providers for navigating and prescribing DOCs. METHODS: This two-phase review included a rapid review of clinical outcomes and an assessment of DOC content. We conducted a literature search for studies evaluating DOC use and glucometric (glycated hemoglobin [A1C], time-in-range, hypoglycemia), behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes. The environmental scan of current DOC sites established key features, including available platforms, target population, content areas, and reach. RESULTS: Twelve papers were included-eight reported DOC use within a context of do-it-yourself (DIY) noncommercial, opensource hybrid closed loop systems community and four were non-DYI related. In latter, all studies were cross-sectional, describing patient-reported outcomes. Two studies reported A1C lowering with DOC use, two DOC use was associated with high self-efficacy, one showed association with higher self-care levels, and one showed higher quality of life scores when compared with population norms. All DIY studies showed improvement in glucometrics after initiation of sensor augmented pump technology with DOC support. Of 54 DOC sites reviewed in the environmental scan, 29 were included. Diabetes online community sites were heterogenous in social media platform and type of diabetes targeted. CONCLUSION: Diabetes online communities have the potential to improve clinical, behavioral, and psychosocial outcomes. Randomized control trials and/or longitudinal prospective studies evaluating outcomes are needed to further examine the potential benefits of DOC use. Diabetes online communities are diverse and span a variety of social media platforms, providing clinicians opportunities to individualize recommendations for DOC use.

The classifier selection problem in Assistive Technology Adoption refers to selecting the classification algorithms that have the best performance in predicting the adoption of technology, and is often addressed through measuring different single performance indicators. Satisfactory classifier selection can help in reducing time and costs involved in the technology adoption process. As there are multiple criteria from different domains and several candidate classification algorithms, the classifier selection process is now a problem that can be addressed using Multiple-Criteria Decision-Making (MCDM) methods. This paper proposes a novel approach to address the classifier selection problem by integrating Intuitionistic Fuzzy Sets (IFS), Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL), and the Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution (TOPSIS). The step-by-step procedure behind this application is as follows. First, IF-DEMATEL was used for estimating the criteria and sub-criteria weights considering uncertainty. This method was also employed to evaluate the interrelations among classifier selection criteria. Finally, a modified TOPSIS was applied to generate an overall suitability index per classifier so that the most effective ones can be selected. The proposed approach was validated using a real-world case study concerning the adoption of a mobile-based reminding solution by People with Dementia (PwD). The outputs allow public health managers to accurately identify whether PwD can adopt an assistive technology which results in (i) reduced cost overruns due to wrong classification, (ii) improved quality of life of adopters, and (iii) rapid deployment of intervention alternatives for non-adopters.

BACKGROUND: Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy refers to the structural and functional changes in the heart leading to either impaired systolic, diastolic, electrocardiographic, and neurohormonal changes associated with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is present in 50% of patients with cirrhosis and is clinically seen as impaired contractility, diastolic dysfunction, hyperdynamic circulation, and electromechanical desynchrony such as QT prolongation. In this review, we will discuss the cardiac physiology principles underlying cirrhotic cardiomyopathy, imaging techniques such as cardiac magnetic resonance imaging and scintigraphy, cardiac biomarkers, and newer echocardiographic techniques such as tissue Doppler imaging and speckle tracking, and emerging treatments to improve outcomes. METHODS: We reviewed available literature from MEDLINE for randomized controlled trials, cohort studies, cross-sectional studies, and real-world outcomes using the search terms "cirrhotic cardiomyopathy," "left ventricular diastolic dysfunction," "heart failure in cirrhosis," "liver transplantation," and "coronary artery disease". RESULTS: Cirrhotic cardiomyopathy is associated with increased risk of complications such as hepatorenal syndrome, refractory ascites, impaired response to stressors including sepsis, bleeding or transplantation, poor health-related quality of life and increased morbidity and mortality. The evaluation of cirrhotic cardiomyopathy should also guide the feasibility of procedures such as transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, dose titration protocol of betablockers, and liver transplantation. The use of targeted heart rate reduction is of interest to improve cardiac filling and improve the cardiac output using repurposed heart failure drugs such as ivabradine. Liver transplantation may also reverse the cirrhotic cardiomyopathy; however, careful cardiac evaluation is necessary to rule out coronary artery disease and improve cardiac outcomes in the perioperative period. CONCLUSION: More data are needed on the new diagnostic criteria, molecular and biochemical changes, and repurposed drugs in cirrhotic cardiomyopathy. The use of advanced imaging techniques should be incorporated in clinical practice.

RESUMEN

The pinewood nematode (PWN) Bursaphelenchus xylophilus is the causal agent of the pine wilt disease (PWD) and represents one of the major threats to conifer forests. The detection of the PWN in Portugal, associated with Pinus pinaster, increased the concern of its spread to European forests. Despite its susceptibility to PWD, genetic variability found among P. pinaster populations has been associated with heritable PWD resistance. Understanding the mechanisms underlying tree resistance constitutes a valuable resource for breeding programs toward more resilient forest plantations. This study investigated changes in anatomy, chlorophyll a fluorescence (ChlF), and primary metabolism in susceptible and resistant P. pinaster half-sib plants, after PWN inoculation. Susceptible plants showed a general shutdown of central metabolism, osmolyte accumulation, photosynthetic inhibition, and a decrease in the plant water status. The ChlF transient rise (OJIP curve) revealed the appearance of L- and K-bands, indicators of environmental stress. In contrast, resistant plants revealed a regulated defense response and were able to restrict PWN migration and cellular damage. Furthermore, the accumulation of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and succinate suggested a role of these metabolites in PWD resistance and the possible activation of the GABA shunt. Altogether, these results provide new insights to the role of primary metabolism in PWD resistance and in the selection of resistant phenotypes for disease mitigation.

One in four Baby Boomers fills the informal caregiver role in the United States. The objectives of this study were to estimate the prevalence of Baby Boomers who are informal caregivers for people living with dementia and compare their physical and mental health status to caregivers for persons with conditions other than dementia using 2015-2018 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System data (N = 10,602). We identified caregiving status (assisting a family member/friend with a long-term illness or disability in the past month, managing personal care, and not caring for a child/grandchild) and whether the care recipient's major health condition was dementia. We calculated weighted estimates and used chi-square tests and log-binomial regression for comparisons of selected characteristics. Among Baby Boomer caregivers, 15.4% were caring for someone with dementia. Dementia caregivers were more likely to be female, caring for a parent/parent-in-law, and providing care longer than caregivers for persons without dementia. After adjusting for sociodemographic and caregiving characteristics, the prevalence of fair/poor health, frequent mental distress, and chronic conditions were similar across types of caregivers. Although no differences in caregiver's physical and mental health by care recipient's dementia status were found, we should underscore the importance of maintaining Baby Boomer caregivers' health and well-being.

BACKGROUND: eHealth interventions have been explored to provide convenient support and training to informal dementia carers. Design and usability issues may however hinder user acceptance of Web-based interventions. iSupport is an online program developed by World Health Organization (WHO) to support informal dementia carers. PURPOSE: This study gathers user-feedback and evaluates the usability of the European-Portuguese version of iSupport. METHODS: A mixed-methods study was conducted. Two focus groups discussions (n = 15) and 15 usability test sessions were conducted with carers and health/social support professionals to collect data on user satisfaction and requirements on the program's contents and Web interface. The usability testing protocol comprised pre/post-test surveys, a structured interview and observation of task performance in the Web platform. Content analysis of text data was performed by two independent coders. RESULTS: Success rates were superior to 80% for most tasks. An average score of 89.5 on the System Usability Scale demonstrated an excellent perception of the program's usability. The program was perceived as trustworthy, and participants were globally satisfied with its aesthetics and easiness of use. Feedback and personalization were valued functional requirements, while no consensus was found for mood self-assessment or professional/peer interaction features. Lessons were considered culturally fit, thematically pertinent, and comprehensive. Suggestions for improvement were wide-ranging from program's layout to accessibility, usability, functional requirements, content format and lessons' themes. CONCLUSIONS: This study derives user requirements for an evidence-based program for dementia carers. Both the study findings and usability assessment methodology can be imported to the development of similar programs worldwide.

BACKGROUND: The quantification of diabetes-related quality of life (DR-QoL) is an essential step in making Type 2 Diabetes (T2DM) self-management arrangements. The European General Practitioners Research Network (EGPRN) initiated the EUROBSTACLE study to develop a broadly conceptualised DR-QoL instrument for diverse cultural and ethnic groups; high and low-income countries. In 2016 the Diabetes Obstacles Questionnaire-30 (DOQ-30) was introduced. OBJECTIVES: The research aimed to study obstacles a patient with diabetes (PWD) may face in everyday life. First, we assessed how descriptive and clinical characteristics and the residential country were associated with the obstacles. Secondly, we calculated the proportion of respondents who expressed obstacles. METHODS: Data were collected in 2009 in a cross-sectional survey in Belgium, France, Estonia, Serbia, Slovenia, and Turkey. Multiple linear regressions were computed to detect associations between descriptive and clinical characteristics, residential country, and obstacles. Percentages of respondents who perceived obstacles were calculated. RESULTS: We found that although descriptive and clinical characteristics varied to quite a great extent, they were weakly associated with the perception of obstacles. The residential country was most often associated with the existence of some obstacle. The highest percent (48%) of all respondents perceived 'Uncertainty about Insulin Use' as an obstacle. CONCLUSION: Descriptive and clinical characteristics were weakly associated with perceived obstacles. However, the residential country plays an essential role in the decline of the QoL of PWDs. Education of both PWDs and healthcare professionals (HCPs) plays an essential role in countering the fear of insulin.

The number of people living with dementia in the world is rising at an unprecedented rate, and no country will be spared. Furthermore, neither decisive treatment nor effective medicines have yet become effective. One potential alternative to this emerging challenge is utilizing supportive technologies and services that not only assist people with dementia to do their daily activities safely and independently, but also reduce the overwhelming pressure on their caregivers. Thus, for this study, a systematic literature review is conducted in an attempt to gain an overview of the latest findings in this field of study and to address some commercially available supportive technologies and services that have potential application for people living with dementia. To this end, 30 potential supportive technologies and 15 active supportive services are identified from the literature and related websites. The technologies and services are classified into different classes and subclasses (according to their functionalities, capabilities, and features) aiming to facilitate their understanding and evaluation. The results of this work are aimed as a base for designing, integrating, developing, adapting, and customizing potential multimodal solutions for the specific needs of vulnerable people of our societies, such as those who suffer from different degrees of dementia.

This study aims to clarify the mechanism of exfoliation of graphene through electrical pulsed wire discharge (PWD) of a graphite strip, made by the compression of inexpensive expanded graphite in water. The explosion of the graphite strip was visualized using a high-speed video camera. During the energized heating of the sample, explosions, accompanied by shock waves due to expansion of gas inside the sample, occurred at various locations of the sample, and the sample started to expand rapidly. The exfoliated graphene was observed as a region with low light transmittance. The PWD phenomenon of graphite strips, a type of porous material, is reasonably explained by the change in electrical resistivity of the sample during discharge and the light emission due to energy transition of the excited gas.
