RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The Cariostat caries activity test (CAT) was used to evaluate the effectiveness of personalized oral hygiene management combining oral health education and professional mechanical tooth cleaning on the oral health status of pregnant women. AIM: To investigate whether personalized oral hygiene management enhances the oral health status of pregnant women. METHODS: A total of 114 pregnant women who were examined at Dalian Women's and Children's Medical Center were divided into four groups: High-risk experimental group (n = 29; CAT score ≥ 2; received personalized oral hygiene management training), low-risk experimental group (n = 29; CAT score ≤ 1; received oral health education), high-risk control group (n = 28; CAT score ≥ 2), and low-risk control group (n = 28; CAT score ≤ 1). No hygiene intervention was provided to control groups. CAT scores at different times were compared using independent samples t-test and least significant difference t-test. RESULTS: No significant difference in baseline CAT scores was observed between the experimental and control groups, either in the high-risk or low-risk groups. CAT scores were reduced significantly after 3 (1.74 ± 0.47 vs 2.50 ± 0.38, P < 0.0001) and 6 months (0.53 ± 0.50 vs 2.45 ± 0.42, P < 0.0001) of personalized oral hygiene management intervention but not after oral health education alone (0.43 ± 0.39 vs 0.46 ± 0.33, P > 0.05 and 0.45 ± 0.36 vs 0.57 ± 0.32, P > 0.05, respectively). Within groups, the decrease in CAT scores was significant (2.43 ± 0.44 vs 1.74 ± 0.47 vs 0.53 ± 0.50, P < 0.0001) for only the high-risk experimental group. CONCLUSION: Personalized oral hygiene management is effective in improving the oral health of pregnant women and can improve pregnancy outcomes and the oral health of the general population.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to determine the overall oral health statuses of patients with fixed orthodontic appliance and clear aligner, as well as their oral hygiene management behaviours and satisfaction. METHODS: We selected 40 participants (20 each with fixed orthodontic devices and clear aligners) who visited a dental clinic. We conducted a survey to determine the oral hygiene management behaviours of the subjects and their satisfaction with their orthodontic treatment. Three measurements were also conducted at 4-week intervals to determine the oral health statuses of the subjects. RESULTS: The Löe and Silness gingival index of patients with fixed orthodontic appliances indicated moderate gingivitis (1.1 ± 0.3), and those with clear aligners had mild gingivitis (0.6 ± 0.4) (p < 0.001). The modified O'Leary index also indicated that the degree of dental plaque deposition in the oral cavity was lower in patients treated with a clear aligner (43.0 ± 18.2 points) than in those treated with a fixed orthodontic (28.1 ± 10.9 points) (p = 0.004). Regarding oral hygiene management, the fixed orthodontic group received scaling more frequently (p = 0.006), received more oral health education (p < 0.001) and had a longer brushing time (p = 0.008) than the clear aligner group. No significant difference was observed in satisfaction between the fixed orthodontic appliance and the clear aligner. CONCLUSIONS: Regarding the oral health status by orthodontic appliance type, the clear aligner group had the advantages of reduction in dental plaque attachment and gingival health. The fixed orthodontic group exhibited better oral hygiene management behaviours. Satisfaction with orthodontic treatment was found to be similar for the two device types.

RESUMEN

The statistical correlation between the number of oral streptococci and the results of ATP bioluminescence assay was examined and compared with the results from Streptococcus plate counts and an oral bacteria quantification system. Because a significant correlation was found between ATP (RLU) and the number of bacteria in the oral bacteria quantification system for all seven types of oral streptococci examined, ATP would reflect a conditions of oral hygiene. However, using this assay, it was observed it may be difficult to correctly evaluate bacteria that form aggregates. Furthermore, even a small number of bacteria (below 105 CFU/mL) , which cannot be measured by the oral bacteria quantification system, could be estimated by using ATP bioluminescence assay. It was suggested that this assay could be used for quantitative evaluation of the effect of oral cleaning.

RESUMEN

Surgery is the current first choice for oral cancer treatment. Intensity-modulated radiation therapy, molecular targeted drugs, and immune checkpoint inhibitors are still used as adjuvant therapy for advanced cancer. In addition, postoperative rehabilitation and multidisciplinary treatment have also been developed in recent years. Multidisciplinary team approaches and supportive care in oral cancer treatment reportedly shorten the time to treatment and improve outcomes. Although there is enough evidence confirming the role of oral and maxillofacial surgeons, dentists, and dental hygienists in supportive care in oral cancer treatment, there are very few systematic studies. In particular, oral health management is a concept that encompasses oral function management, oral hygiene management, and oral care during oral cancer treatment. We provide a narrative review focusing on oral health management from a multidisciplinary and supportive care perspective, applicable in oral cancer treatment.
