RESUMEN

The beet armyworm, Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), has become a significant pest of chickpea in recent years. The polyphagous nature allows it to survive on various hosts during the off-season, creating a great menace to the crop in the following season. To assess the incidence and document the alternate hosts of S. exigua, a rapid roving survey was conducted in 11 chickpea-growing areas of Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, India. Additionally, the life history traits of S. exigua were studied on major alternate host plants under laboratory conditions (27 ± 1 °C and 70 ± 2% RH) to understand the survival, life expectancy and potential contribution to future populations. The results show that, among the different crops surveyed, the maximum larval incidence was noticed in maize (1.93 larvae/plant), cowpea (1.73 larvae/plant), and sunflower (1.68 larvae/plant) during the off-season. Life history studies of S. exigua showed that highest larval survival percentage was observed on chickpea (83.6%), while the lowest was on maize (44.5%). The mean developmental time for larvae was longest on maize (27.1 days) and shortest on chickpea (14.9 days). Larvae did not develop beyond the third instar when fed with chilli. The growth index statistics showed chickpea (9.2) was the most suitable host plant, whereas maize (0.9) was the least suitable host. The age-stage-specific survival rate (Sxj) varied across developmental stages, and the survival curves overlapped, indicating different growth rates among individuals. The life expectancy (exj) at age zero was highest on groundnut (37.06 days). The intrinsic rate of increase (r) of S. exigua was lowest on maize (0.10 ± 0.0013) and highest on chickpea (0.22 ± 0.0010). Similarly, the net reproductive rate (R0) was highest on chickpea (846.39 ± 18.22) and lowest on maize (59.50 ± 2.06). The population doubled every 3.08 ± 0.011 days on chickpea compared to 7.22 ± 0.80 days on maize. The study conclusively indicates that chickpea and sunflower, primarily cultivated during the rabi season in India, are the most preferred hosts for S. exigua. In contrast, maize and cotton, mainly grown during the kharif season, are less preferred and merely support the pest's survival. Consequently, S. exigua switches hosts between different crops growing seasons, so effective management of S. exigua during the kharif season can help prevent pest outbreaks during the rabi season.

RESUMEN

How to address public health priorities after COVID-19 is becoming a critical task. To this end, we conducted wastewater surveillance for six leading pathogens, namely, SARS-CoV-2, norovirus, rotavirus, influenza A virus (IAV), enteroviruses and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), in Nanchang city from January to April 2023. Metaviromic sequencing was conducted at the 1st, 4th, 7th, 9th, 12th and 14th weeks to reveal the dynamics of viral pathogens that were not covered by qPCR. Amplicon sequencing of the conserved region of norovirus GI and GII and the rotavirus and region encoding nonstructural protein of RSV was also conducted weekly. The results showed that after a rapid decrease in SARS-CoV-2 sewage concentrations occurred in January 2023, surges of norovirus, rotavirus, IAV and RSV started at the 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th weeks, respectively. The dynamics of the sewage concentrations of norovirus, rotavirus, IAV and RSV were consistent with the off-season resurgence of the above infectious diseases. Notably, peak sewage concentrations of norovirus GI, GII, rotavirus, IAV and RSV were found at the 6th, 3rd, 7th, 7th and 8th weeks, respectively. Astroviruses also resurge after the 7th week, as revealed by metaviromic data, suggesting that wastewater surveillance together with metaviromic data provides an essential early warning tool for revealing patterns of infectious disease resurgence.

RESUMEN

Production of quality fruits in the dry and low humid October-May period has been a challenge in the tropics and sub-tropics having wide weather fluctuations throughout the year. Henceforth, the research aimed at investigating the seasonal variations in vegetative developments as well as flowering, fruiting, yield, and fruit quality of guava emphasizing the off-seasonality by pruning 0 cm (control), 15 cm, 30 cm, and 45 cm from shoot-tip, once a year at spring (early March), monsoon (early June) and autumn (early September) under such atmospheric implications. Yearly and quarterly documentation at wet (June-August and September-November) and dry (December-February and March-May) seasons revealed that pruning in spring and autumn exhibited statistical parity for higher yearly yield of 31.71 kg and 31.58 kg plant-1, respectively. Moreover, spring pruning had maximum yield in the wet season (23.94 kg plant-1), while autumn pruning governed the dry season production (18.11 kg plant-1) having a notable wet period yield (13.47 kg plant-1). Considering the yearly and quarterly in March-May and December-February harvests, autumn pruning exhibited statistical supremacy for total soluble solids, titratable acidity, total sugar, vitamin C, and specific gravity. However, pruning time didn't influence the fruit physiochemical traits at the June-August and September-November quarters producing fruits of inferior quality compared to those of March-May and December-February harvests. On the other hand, pruning lengths of 30 cm and 45 cm demonstrated statistical consistency for auspicious vegetative, reproductive and fruit biochemical properties. Meanwhile, 30 cm pruning produced maximum number of flowers (224.71 plant-1) and fruits (155.89 plant-1), consequently the highest yield (38.38 kg plant-1). Treatment interactions too ascertained that off-season production of superior quality guava can be enhanced by 30 cm shoot-tip pruning in autumn without compromising the year-round harvests.

RESUMEN

Fresh vegetables have high water content and low acidity, so drying can extend shelf life, allowing the obtaining of alternative flours for the development of new products. The study aimed to investigate the influence of the melon harvest and off-season on the chemical composition of melon (Cantaloupe, Charentais e Honey Dew) flours and the potential application in products. The flours were evaluated for granulometry, morphology, centesimal composition, lipid and mineral content, total phenolic compound (TPC), antioxidant activity, and technological properties. Cakes containing melon flour were produced to replace wheat flour (0, 25, and 50 %) and evaluated for proximate composition, microbiology, and sensory parameters. Flours were classified as fine-grained (MESH >16), except Charentais off-season (medium - MESH 8-16, and fine-grained - MESH >16), and all presented a rough surface and minimal cell wall ruptures. The harvest homogeneously influenced the humidity, as all the off-season flours showed higher levels [17-22 %] (p < 0.05) due to weather conditions. For TPC, Cantaloupe melon flours from the harvest (CFH) [208 mg/100 g] and off-season [877 mg/100 g] stood out (p < 0.05), and the latter showed greater antioxidant potential [328 µmol TE/g]. Palmitic, linoleic, and linolenic acid stood out in all flours, and potassium for minerals (63-78 %) in the harvest and off-season. The harvest and off-season specifically influenced the flour of each variety in swelling power, water solubility, oil absorption, and emulsifying capacity. For cakes with CFH, no thermotolerant coliforms and Escherichia coli were detected, and the mesophilic count was <1.0 CFU/g. The ash, protein, lipid, and fiber contents increased proportionally to melon flour addition (p < 0.05). Sensory acceptance was high for cakes containing 25 and 50 % of CFH [82.78 % and 82.53 %], and most consumers would likely buy the products (4.04 and 3.99) (p < 0.05). The study contributed to knowledge about the seasonality effect and demonstrated the potential use of melon flour in developing new products.

RESUMEN

Esports is a rapidly growing industry and related information garners the attention of audiences both inside and outside the arena. The electronic competition system has become more structured over time and there are now standard off-seasons, which coincide tightly with an intensive period of player transfers. However, at the same time, the off-season has few events to cover and transfer information is highly confidential, so any insights regarding possible transfers are of deep interest to audiences. As a result, unofficial esports insiders often leak transfer information. To explore this phenomenon in greater depth, the methodology used in this study was based on the content analysis of information relating to 10-years in the life of the esport Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS:GO). Data was collected from the Perfect World Esports APP and the HLTV websites to analyze the informants and the development of transfer information and its influence. It was found that, during the off-season, insider transfer revelations became the primary focus of content in the esports media sector. As the number of viewers participating in discussions about potential transfers has grown, esports tipsters have discovered a new career path within the industry. A comprehensive assessment of the audience and professional practitioners reveals the essential qualities that esports insiders should possess to excel in this field and for their careers to develop.

RESUMEN

Supplier-induced demand (SID) is a long-standing concern in health economics and health system studies; however, empirical evidence on SID-critical to the development of health policy-is difficult to obtain, especially from China. This study, therefore, aims to add new evidence on SID in China's public tertiary hospitals and facilitates the development of evidence-based health policies in China and other countries with similar healthcare systems. For this study, we used patient-level electronic medical records (EMRs) collected from the information systems of tertiary hospitals in a western province in China. From 11 tertiary hospitals, we collected 274,811 hospitalization records dated between 15 February and 30 November 2019. Total expenditure on hospitalization and length of admission of each patient were the primary metrics for measuring SID. We constructed a character indicator to measure the high-season or off-season status of hospitals, and log-linear estimations were applied to estimate the "off-season effect" on hospitalized expenditures and length of admission. We find that the cost of hospitalization is indeed higher in the off-season in China's public tertiary hospitals; specifically, expenditures for patients admitted in the off-season increased by an average of 5.3-7.9% compared to patients admitted in the peak season, while the length of admission in the hospital increased by an average of 6.8% to 10.2%. We also checked the robustness of our findings by performing subgroup analyses of EMRs in the city-level hospitals and surgical group. We name this phenomenon the "hospital off-season effect" and suggest that the main reason for it is inappropriate financial incentives combined with a Fee-For-Services payment method. We suggest that China should work to reform inappropriate financial incentives in public hospitals to eliminate SID by changing its payment and financing compensation system.

RESUMEN

West Nile (WNV) and Usutu (USUV) viruses are two mosquito-borne viruses belonging to the family Flaviviridae and genus Flavivirus. The natural transmission cycle of WNV and USUV involves mosquitoes and birds, while mammals are thought to be accidental hosts. The goal of this study was to report-in the context of "off-season monitoring" and passive surveillance-the detection of WNV and USUV RNA in wild birds. To this end, we analyzed biological samples of wild birds in Northern Italy, from October to May, hence outside of the regional monitoring period (June-September). The virological investigations for the detection of USUV and WNV RNA were performed using real-time PCR on frozen samples of the brain, myocardium, kidney, and spleen. In a total sample of 164 wild birds belonging to 27 different species, sequences of both viruses were detected: four birds (2.44%) were positive for WNV and five (3.05%) for USUV. Off-season infections of WNV and especially USUV are still widely discussed and only a few studies have been published to date. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first report on the detection of USUV RNA until December 22nd. Although further studies are required, our results confirm the viral circulation out-of-season of Flavivirus in wild birds, suggesting reconsidering the epidemiological monitoring period based on each individual climate zone and taking into consideration global warming which will play an important role in the epidemiology of vector-borne diseases.

RESUMEN

Castor (Ricinus communis L.) is an important industrial crop with a wide range of industrial and pharmaceutical applications. Brazil is among the largest castor-producing countries. Between 2004 and 2010, castor cultivation was stimulated with an emphasis towards biodiesel production. However, this was not enough to leverage the production of castor in Brazil, mainly due to the lack of structured trade and the competition with other cheaper raw materials for the production of biodiesel. Despite this failure, the species presents itself as an excellent alternative for crop rotation in the second crop among soybean, corn, beans, and cotton cultivation areas as the oil is highly valuable for other products. Moreover, it has drawn the attention of producers and researchers in Brazil for this potential rotation as it is considered a plant tolerant of water-deficiency and is highly susceptible to gray mold, a disease favored by high humidity in the final stages of the crop. For instance, its cultivation in the second crop in Cerrado regions, where rains occur in the early stages of the crop and cease when the plants reach the final stage of production, has been successful and shows great promise. The current study aimed to evaluate the suitability of environments throughout Brazil to grow castor, incorporating variables associated with the incidence of gray mold and confirm these findings based on existing castor trial data obtained from the literature. The site suitability analysis determined that 74.99 million hectares - 8.8% of Brazilian territory - are highly suitable for castor production during second harvest, mostly located in the Northeastern and Midwestern regions. These results are surprising since Brazil currently has around 7.8% (∼66.81 million hectares) of its territory occupied with agriculture (grains, fruits, vegetables, and perennial crops). The findings of this study provide a method to perform site suitability for crops using data associated with agronomic and disease characteristics, as is the case with gray mold that often results in significant losses in castor production. Also, this analysis provides evidence for the great potential of Brazil to increase castor production and meet the world demand for its oil through utilization of second-crop cultivation.

RESUMEN

To understand the yield and quality of off-season mulberry fruits, which are cultivated in open fields from autumn, the biological characteristics, bioactive compounds, and antioxidant activities of them were analyzed. Compared with mulberry fruits in normal season, the fruit length, fruit diameter, single fruit weight, fruit yield per meter strip, and the fruits yield per 667 m2 are significantly lower. The moisture content and juice yield of off-season mulberry fruits are lower than the mulberry fruits in normal season; the pH and soluble solids are higher. The contents of mass fraction of crude protein, total sugar, reducing sugar, total acids, total anthocyanins, and total flavonoids decreased significantly in all batches of off-season mulberry fruits compared with those of normal season. Of off-season mulberry fruits, the contents of glucose, fructose and sucrose, expression, anthocyanin biosynthesis genes, and antioxidant capacity are significantly lower than those in normal season.

RESUMEN

Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is an important economic seafood in China, and the hepatopancreatic dim color and bitter taste of crabs significantly affects the consumer's acceptance. The crabs with brown hepatopancreas (BH) generally taste bitter, while the orange hepatopancreas (OH) does not taste bitter. While the metabolites perform their physiological functions, their metabolic relationship may directly affect the color and taste quality of the crab hepatopancreas. This study investigated the metabolic relationship of key metabolites related to the color and bitterness in the OH and BH of E. sinensis. The contents of total bile acids (BAs) (10.62 vs. 3.72 µg/g), bitter free amino acids (FAAs) (5.15 vs. 2.46 mg/g) and lutein (6.88 vs. 2.55 µg/g) in the BH group were significantly higher (P < 0.01) than those in the OH group, while ß-carotene (314.47 vs. 478.52 µg/g) in the BH group was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than that in the OH group. In addition, BAs were positively correlated with lutein, saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids (SFA and MUFA) and bitter FAAs, and negatively correlated with color value, ß-carotene and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA). In conclusion, BAs and bitter FAAs may be the major contributors to the bitterness of BH, and the high content of BAs in the BH group may promote lipid catabolism, inhibit ß-carotene absorption and enhance amino acid metabolism, leading to the hepatopancreas brown and bitter.

RESUMEN

Soil surface management, i.e., mulch by film, straw or cover crop, is very important to water availability in soil on drylands worldwide, especially during the fallow season, when there is a high concentration of soil nitrate nitrogen (N) to produce nitrous oxide (N2O). To determine whether soil surface management affects N2O emissions during the fallow season, we conducted an experiment to compare N2O emissions from a wheat field that received different surface soil management strategies: control (CK), straw mulch and incorporation (SR), planting legume green manure and incorporation (GM), SR plus GM (SR + GM), and plastic film mulch (FM). The results showed that the average hourly N2O emissions during the fallow season were in the order SR (7.4 µg N m-2 h-1), GM (10.7 µg N m-2 h-1), SR + GM (11.7 µg N m-2 h-1), FM (15.5 µg N m-2 h-1), and CK (16.4 µg N m-2 h-1). Correspondingly, reduced total N2O emissions were observed in the SR, GM and SR + GM treatments, with an average reduction of 39.0% (from 302 to 184 g N ha-1) while increased N2O emissions were from the GM and SR + GM treatments in the wheat growing season. Additionally, N2O emissions were related to soil nitrate N content, microbial biomass and moisture. Overall, considering N2O emissions, C and N inputs by plant residues and grain yield, the management of GM has the potential to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve soil C sequestration and soil fertility. These results emphasized the importance of legume green manure to wheat-fallow cropping systems.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: In the Northern Hemisphere, influenza season typically starts in December and lasts through March. Pregnant people are at increased risk for influenza-related morbidity and mortality. Potentially, new viral strains or reduced provider suspicion leading to delayed diagnosis of late-season influenza could result in an increased risk of severe infection. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the incidence and morbidity associated with late-season influenza in pregnancy, compared with influenza in other seasons. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective cohort study using the 2007-2018 National Inpatient Sample. Pregnant patients with discharge diagnosis codes consistent with influenza infection were compared on the basis of hospital admission quarter (quarter 1: October to December; quarter 2: January to March; quarter 3: April to June; quarter 4: July to September), with quarter 3 defined as "late-season." The primary outcome was the severe maternal morbidity composite defined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The secondary outcomes included sepsis, shock, acute renal failure, acute heart failure, temporary tracheostomy, and invasive mechanical ventilation. Associations between outcomes and quarter of infection were adjusted for age, hospitalization type (antepartum, delivery, or postpartum), and comorbid conditions using relative risk regression, weighted to reflect the National Inpatient Sample design. RESULTS: Of 7355 hospitalizations, corresponding to a weighted national estimate of 36,042, 2266 (30.8%) occurred in quarter 1, 4051 (55.0%) in quarter 2, 633 (8.6%) in quarter 3, and 405 (5.5%) in quarter 4. A nonsignificant trend toward higher rates of severe maternal morbidity was seen in the "late-season" compared with other quarters (13.9% [quarter 3] vs 10.5% [quarter 1] vs 12.1% [quarter 2] vs 13.6% [quarter 4]; P=.07). Moreover, sepsis was more common in patients with late-season influenza (8.0% [quarter 3] vs 4.8% [quarter 1] vs 5.8% [quarter 2] vs 5.9% [quarter 4]; P=.03). In the adjusted analyses, patients with late-season influenza had a 1.34 (95% confidence interval, 1.01-1.78) higher risk of severe maternal morbidity and 1.57 (95% confidence interval, 1.06-2.32) higher risk of sepsis than patients with influenza in quarter 1. CONCLUSION: Influenza infection between April and June, that is, late-season influenza, is associated with a higher risk of severe maternal morbidity and sepsis in pregnant patients. Obstetrical providers must continue to have awareness and suspicion for influenza infection during these months.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVES: Wrestling is a physically demanding sport with an inherently high risk of injury relative to other sports. Injury risk factors may change dramatically for athletes participating in off-season wrestling, given exposure to new opponents, training methods, and wrestling styles compared with in-season months; however, this has never been elucidated in the literature. This study seeks to characterize the injuries sustained while participating in off-season wrestling and compare them to injuries sustained during the in-season months for middle and high school age athletes. METHODS: The National Electronic Injury Surveillance System (NEISS) database was queried (2000-2018) to directly compare national estimates and injury characteristics of middle and high school age patients (11-18 years of age) presenting to US emergency departments (EDs) with wrestling-associated injuries, stratified by in-season and off-season months. RESULTS: The average annual number of patients 11 to 18 years of age presenting to US EDs with wrestling-associated injuries was 20,157 (95% Confidence Interval [C.I.] 16,622-23,691) during in-season months and 5,321 (C.I. 3,954-6,688) during off-season months between 2000 and 2018. Those sustaining in-season injuries were significantly (p < 0.001) more and less likely to injure their upper trunk (8.0%; C.I. 7.1% - 8.8%) and wrists (3.7%; C.I. 3.2% - 4.2%), respectively, than those presenting with off-season injuries (upper trunk: 5.3%; C.I. 4.2% - 6.5%; wrists: 6.6%; C.I. 5.1% - 8.1%). There were no significant differences with respect to the overall prevalence of injury diagnoses between in-season and off-season patient cohorts, including for fractures and dislocations (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: These findings may alleviate concerns that off-season wrestling is inherently more dangerous than in-season wrestling due to changes in wrestling styles or opponent skill levels as the prevalence of specific injury diagnoses between the two seasons is similar.

RESUMEN

Chia seed is expanding on the market due to its characteristics, but there are few studies on its response to residual fertilization of other crops. The objective was to evaluate the vegetative and productive parameters of common bean as a function of the base fertilization increment and to verify the influence of the residue of this fertilization on the development of chia. The experiment was carried out in two stages, Maringá State University, Umuarama Regional Campus, in a randomized block design with 4 replications. The treatments for the first stage were: T1 - doses recommended for beans and T2, T3, T4 and T5, were recommended doses for beans with increments for each treatment. The evaluated variables were: shoot dry matter, number of pods per plant, grains per plant, grains per pod, 1000 grains weight and yield. In the second stage, the experiment was installed in the same place of the previous cultivation. The treatments were: residual bean fertilization, T6 - plus the treatment with the recommendation for chia. The evaluated variables were: macro and micronutrient leaf contents, shoot dry matter, final plant population, 1.000 grains weight, oil content and yield. For beans and chia, soil samples were collected after harvest to evaluate chemical attributes. In common bean, the results were not significant in the evaluated parameters. In soil, the residual effect of beans was significant for P and K, with 27.2 mg dm-3 and 167.70 mg dm-3, in treatment T5 and chia was 23.1 mg dm-3 and 89.7 mg dm-3, for treatment T6, respectively. In chia, yield, oil content and P for leaf macro and micronutrient leaf contents were significant. Thus, the vegetative and productive parameters of the common bean were not influenced by the increase in fertilization. The residual effect was higher for P and K, for beans and chia. For chia, influences by residual effect were observed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Entomopathogenic nematodes (EPN) show potential in controlling larvae of the Mediterranean fruit fly (medfly) Ceratitis capitate, but previous studies mainly concern species and strains that are not commercially available. The use of EPN for control of Mediterranean fruit fly is further hampered by the cost of using nematodes. In this study, the efficacy and residual activity of commercial strains of three EPN species, Steinernema carpοcapsae, S. feltiae and Heterοrhabditis bacteriοphοra medfly) C. capitata, in the soil substrate and inside fruits were evaluated. RESULTS: Suspensions of these species were applied at a dose of 1.5 mi m-2 on a soil substrate wherein medfly larvae were added sequentially for a period of 4 weeks post application at 20 °C. S. feltiae provided the highest suppression up to 50% as assessed by adult medfly emergence because it had the highest immediate activity and long residual activity. Furthermore, S. feltiae, and to a lesser degree S. carpocapsae, were able to move and infect medfly larvae inside infested apples and oranges left in the surface of the substrate wherein EPN were applied, reducing significantly adult medfly emergence (60-78%). CONCLUSION: These results support the efficacy and feasibility of applying a single, relatively low dose of S. feltiae in autumn, off-season, targeting overwintering medfly larvae with the scope of reducing the number of adult medflies emerging later in the new season.

RESUMEN

Bodybuilding is a sport that requires adequate training strategies in order to maximize skeletal muscle hypertrophy. The purpose of the present review was to perform a narrative assessment of the training routines designed for muscle hypertrophy used by bodybuilders. A search was carried out in the databases Pubmed/MEDLINE, Scielo, EBSCO, LILACS, SportDiscus, Web of Science, and CINAHL with the words "Resistance training" and "hypertrophy" in bodybuilders and their variations that involve the respective outcomes. Fourteen studies were identified that investigated the long-term training routines of bodybuilders. These studies demonstrate a pattern in the training organization, whereby there is a separation of training into four distinct periods: off-season, pre-contest, peak week, and post-contest. Each period has a specific spectrum of intensity load, total training volume, and exercise type (multi- or single-joint). We conclude that bodybuilding competitors employed a higher intensity load, lower number of repetitions, and longer rest intervals in the off-season than pre-contest.

RESUMEN

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of including 30-s sprints in one weekly low-intensity training (LIT) session during a 3-week transition period in elite cyclists. Sixteen male elite cyclists (maximal oxygen uptake, VO2max: 72 ± 5 ml·kg-1·min-1) reduced their training load by ~60% for 3 weeks from the end of competitive season and performed only LIT or included 30-s sprints (SPR) in one weekly LIT-session. Performance and physiological capacities were evaluated during a prolonged (~2.5 h) test-session, including a strength test, a submaximal blood lactate profile test, an incremental test to exhaustion to determine VO2max, 1 h continuous cycling including four maximal 30-s sprints, and a 20-min all-out test. In addition, mental recovery was evaluated using the Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ARQ). The only significant between-group change during the transition period was an 8 ± 11% larger improvement in 30-s sprint performance in SPR compared to control (CON; SPR: 4 ± 5%, CON: -4 ± 5%, p = 0.01). Although not different from CON, SPR maintained 20-min all-out performance (-1 ± 5%, p = 0.37) and fractional utilization of VO2max (1.9 ± 6.1%-points, p = 0.18) during the 20-min all-out test, whereas corresponding declines were observed in CON (-3 ± 5%, p = 0.04, and -2.5 ± 2.9%-points, p = 0.02, respectively). Power output at 4 mmol·L-1 blood lactate concentration decreased similarly in SPR (-4 ± 4%, p = 0.02) and CON (-5 ± 5%, p = 0.01), while VO2max, maximal aerobic power (Wmax), and total burnout score were unaffected in both groups. Including sprints in one weekly LIT-session in the transition period improves sprint performance and maintains 20-min all-out power and fractional utilization of VO2max without compromising mental recovery. Inclusion of sprints in LIT-sessions may therefore be a plausible, time-efficient strategy during short periods of reduced training.

RESUMEN

Chia (Salvia hispanica) is an annual oilseed crop of high nutritional value. This study aimed to analyze the performance of chia plants sown at different times and grown under different phosphorus rates. The experiment was conducted under field conditions at the Experimental Farm of the State University of Maringá, Umuarama, Brazil. Treatments were arranged in a randomized split-plot design with three replications. Phosphorus fertilizer was applied at the time of sowing at rates of 0, 40, 80, or 120 kg P2O5 ha-1. Seeds were sown on four dates at 14-day intervals, starting on March 21, 2017, for the first crop and March 29, 2018, for the second crop. Plant population density, raceme number, shoot dry matter yield, thousand seed weight, seed yield, and seed oil content were determined. It was observed that the end of March is the borderline for chia cultivation, because the low temperature and rainfall conditions occurring after this period compromise chia growth. The best phosphorous rate for chia growth was 80-120 kg ha-1, which led to optimum vegetative parameters.

RESUMEN

Monitoring external training load (eTL) has become popular for team sport for managing fatigue, optimizing performance, and guiding return-to-play protocols. During indoor sports, eTL can be measured via inertial measurement units (IMU) or indoor positioning systems (IPS). Though each device provides unique information, the relationships between devices has not been examined. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to assess the association of eTL between an IMU and IPS used to monitor eTL in team sport. Retrospective analyses were performed on 13 elite male National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I basketball players (age: 20.2 ± 1.2 years, height: 201.1 ± 7.6 cm, mass: 96.8 ± 8.8 kg) from three practices during the off-season training phase. A one-way analysis of variance was used to test differences in eTL across practices. Pearson's correlation examined the association between the Distance traveled during practice captured by IPS compared to PlayerLoad (PL), PlayerLoad per Minute (PL/Min), 2-Dimensional PlayerLoad (PL2D), 1-Dimensional PlayerLoad Forward (PL1D-FWD), Side (PL1D-SIDE), and Up (PL1D-UP) captured from the IMU. Regression analyses were performed to predict PL from Distance traveled. The eTL characteristics during Practice 1: PL = 420.4 ± 102.9, PL/min = 5.8 ± 1.4, Distance = 1645.9 ± 377.0 m; Practice 2: PL = 472.8 ± 109.5, PL/min = 5.1 ± 1.2, Distance = 1940.0 ± 436.3 m; Practice 3: PL = 295.1 ± 57.8, PL/min = 5.3 ± 1.0, Distance = 1198.2 ± 219.2 m. Significant (p ≤ 0.05) differences were observed in PL, PL2D, PL1D-FWD, PL1D-SIDE, PL1D-UP, and Distance across practices. Significant correlations (p ≤ 0.001) existed between Distance and PL parameters (Practice 1: r = 0.799-0.891; Practice 2: r = 0.819-0.972; and Practice 3: 0.761-0.891). Predictive models using Distance traveled accounted for 73.5-89.7% of the variance in PL. Significant relationships and predictive capacities exists between systems. Nonetheless, each system also appears to capture unique information that may still be useful to performance practitioners regarding the understanding of eTL.

RESUMEN

Tomato landraces, originated by adaptive responses to local habitats, are considered a valuable resource for many traits of agronomic interest, including fruit nutritional quality. Primary and secondary metabolites are essential determinants of fruit organoleptic quality, and some of them, such as carotenoids and phenolics, have been associated with beneficial proprieties for human health. Landraces' fruit taste and flavour are often preferred by consumers compared to the commercial varieties' ones. In an autumn-winter greenhouse hydroponic experiment, the response of three Southern-Italy tomato landraces (Ciettaicale, Linosa and Corleone) and one commercial cultivar (UC-82B) to different concentrations of sodium chloride (0 mM, 60 mM or 120 mM NaCl) were evaluated. At harvest, no losses in marketable yield were noticed in any of the tested genotypes. However, under salt stress, fresh fruit yield as well as fruit calcium concentration were higher affected in the commercial cultivar than in the landraces. Furthermore, UC-82B showed a trend of decreasing lycopene and total antioxidant capacity with increasing salt concentration, whereas no changes in these parameters were observed in the landraces under 60 mM NaCl. Landraces under 120 mM NaCl accumulated more fructose and glucose in the fruits, while salt did not affect hexoses levels in UC-82B. Ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis revealed differential accumulation of glycoalkaloids, phenolic acids, flavonoids and their derivatives in the fruits of all genotypes under stress. Overall, the investigated Italian landraces showed a different behaviour compared to the commercial variety UC-82B under moderate salinity stress, showing a tolerable compromise between yield and quality attributes. Our results point to the feasible use of tomato landraces as a target to select interesting genetic traits to improve fruit quality under stress conditions.
