RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Many Korean enterprises have been operating an occupational health and safety management system (OHSMS) based on Korea Occupational Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA) 18001 certification standards, which were developed in South Korea. OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed health and safety performance among enterprises operating KOSHA 18001. METHODS: Accident rates from 2010 to 2017 of 1,541 enterprises that implemented KOSHA 18001 and those that did not (N = 2,507,363) were analyzed by industry and size. The differences in the accident reduction rate before and after KOSHA 18001 implementation were analyzed in enterprises that implemented the system. RESULTS: Compared to before implementation, the accident reduction rate was greater after KOSHA 18001 was implemented. The year that an enterprise began operating KOSHA 18001 was defined as T. For industry-specific analysis, the accident reduction rate between T and T + 1 was greater than that between T-2 and T-1 increased among both manufacturing (p = 0.020) and other enterprises (p = 0.011). For size-specific analyses, the accident reduction rate between T and T + 1was greater than that between T-2 and T-1 among enterprises with 299 or fewer workers (p = 0.008) and enterprises with 300 or more workers (p = 0.043). However, the accident rates of enterprises that implemented KOSHA 18001 and those that did not varied by industry and size. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that enterprises that do not utilize an OHSMS should consider doing so to prevent and reduce industrial accidents, and industry- and size-specific features should be considered to boost safety performance through the implementation of OHSMS.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In recent years, the frequent occurrence of occupational accidents, illness, and injuries has become a major issue in China. This study aims to investigate the relationship between the adoption of Occupational Health and Safety Management System (OHSMS) standards and financial performance, with a particular focus on the pharmaceutical firms in China. METHODS: The study is based on a sample consisting of 125 pharmaceutical firms listed on the Shanghai and the Shenzhen stock exchanges in China for the period 2010-2018. Each sample firm was evaluated by whether and when it is certified by an OHSMS standard depending on secondary data collected from an independent certification database. Panel-based regression models were employed to explore whether adoption of an OHSMS standard has had an impact on financial performance. RESULTS: The regression results reveal that the adoption of an OHSMS standard positively affects contemporaneous financial performance measured by return on assets (ROA), return on equity (ROE), and earnings per share (EPS). Mixed results were found when financial performance indicators were extended by two years, suggesting that ROE will increase in the second year after a firm is certified with the standard, but EPS will decline in the third year. CONCLUSION: The study findings empirically show that adoption of an OHSMS standard contributes to better financial performance for pharmaceutical firms of China in the short term. However, executives of pharmaceutical firms need to be aware of the increased costs related to certification renewal and audit in the following periods and exercise their management discretion to achieve a win-win situation between OHSMS implementation and financial benefit.

RESUMEN

INTRODUCTION: The implications of OHSAS 18001 for substantive Occupational Health and Safety outcomes such, as a reduction in work accidents, have been under-researched in the scholarly literature. The impact of this standard on other aspects of performance, such as profitability and productivity, has attracted more attention. METHOD: This article aims to fill this gap by shedding light on the relationship between OHSAS 18001 certification and the rates of minor, serious, and fatal accidents per employee at work experienced in certified and non-certified companies. RESULTS: Based on an analysis of a sample of 5,147 Spanish firms, the findings show that OHSAS 18001 certification is only loosely related with better occupational health and safety performance measured in terms of rate of accidents at work. A propensity for OHSAS 18001 certification to be found in economic sectors of activity with worse occupational health and safety outcomes in terms of rate of work-related accidents is identified. There is evidence of a negative selection-effect of the main international management standard for occupational health and safety. Potential distortions and biases that may be related to these and other findings in the scholarly literature are analyzed. Managerial implications of the main findings, implications for policy makers, and avenues for future research are discussed.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems are becoming more widespread in organizations. Consequently, their effectiveness has become a core topic for researchers. This paper evaluates the performance of the Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 18001 specification in certified companies in Iran. METHODS: The evaluation is based on a comparison of specific criteria and indictors related to occupational health and safety management practices in three certified and three noncertified companies. RESULTS: Findings indicate that the performance of certified companies with respect to occupational health and safety management practices is significantly better than that of noncertified companies. CONCLUSION: Occupational Health and Safety Assessment Series 18001-certified companies have a better level of occupational health and safety; this supports the argument that Occupational Health and Safety Management Systems play an important strategic role in health and safety in the workplace.

RESUMEN

Little is known about the costs of safety. A literature review conducted for this study indicates there is a lack of survey-based research dealing with the effects of occupational health and safety (OHS) prevention costs. To close this gap in the literature, this study investigates the interwoven relationships between OHS prevention costs, employee satisfaction, OHS performance and accident costs. Data were collected from 159 OHS management system 18001-certified firms operating in Turkey and analyzed through structural equation modeling. The findings indicate that OHS prevention costs have a significant positive effect on safety performance, employee satisfaction and accident costs savings; employee satisfaction has a significant positive effect on accident costs savings; and occupational safety performance has a significant positive effect on employee satisfaction and accident costs savings. Also, the results indicate that safety performance and employee satisfaction leverage the relationship between prevention costs and accident costs.

INTRODUCTION: The adoption of occupational health and safety management systems is a response to the demands and pressures of regulatory agencies, employers and workers to guarantee a safe work environment free that prevents accidents and reduces the number of people injured. Given Colombian companies' tendency to seek certification in those systems, particularly under the OHSAS 18001:2007 standard. OBJECTIVE: Goal was defined of analyzing the impact on workplace accidents of implementing an occupational health and safety management system under the OHSAS 18001 standard. METHOD: all the data on workplace accidents was compiled, with ratios of severity, frequency and disabling injury of petrochemical companies three years before and after their OHSAS standard certification. Overall, we found that the progress of the management system has come about as the result of changes in the country's standards, and not so much as a product of continuous improvement processes according to the system's performance results. RESULTS: In relation to accidents rates of frequency, severity and disability injuries, four companies analyzed do not show a clear downward trend in the three years following certification. However, if the report of observations increased in three of the companies studied. CONCLUSION: we did not find a clear trend toward a decrease in the severity nor the frequency of accidents. However, there has been improvement in terms of observations of unsafe conditions.
