BACKGROUND: Previous studies have established a correlation between the pathogenesis of oxidative stress and sarcopenia. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is an integrated measure that reflects the overall balance of antioxidants and pro-oxidants in dietary components and lifestyle. However, there are limited reports on the association between OBS and lean mass and the impact of protein intake on the association between OBS and lean mass. METHODS: Using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2018, multivariate linear and logistic regression analyses were conducted to explore the associations between OBS and outcomes. The findings were then illustrated through fitted smoothing curves and threshold effect analyses. RESULTS: This study included 2,441 participants, demonstrating that higher OBS is significantly associated with an increased ratio of appendicular lean mass to body mass index. Key inflection points at OBS 31 mark pronounced changes in these associations, with age and protein intake notably affecting the association. The effect of OBS on lean mass varies among populations with high and low protein intake. CONCLUSIONS: Our findings suggest that OBS is significantly and positively associated with lean mass. A high protein intake of more than 84.5 g/day may enhance the role of OBS in influencing muscle health to improve muscle outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Few studies have examined the link between systemic oxidative stress and mortality risk in diabetes and prediabetes patients. The Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel measure of systemic oxidative stress, with higher scores indicating greater antioxidant exposure. This study investigates the relationship between OBS and all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in these patients. METHODS: This study analyzed 10,591 diabetes and prediabetes patients from the 1999-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The endpoints were all-cause and cardiovascular mortality, determined from the National Death Index (NDI). OBS was calculated using 20 dietary and lifestyle factors. Kaplan-Meier survival analysis, multivariable Cox regression models, restricted cubic splines (RCS), and subgroup analyses were used to assess the relationship between OBS and mortality risks. RESULTS: Over an average follow-up of 99.8 months, 2900 (26.4 %) participants died, including 765 (8.9 %) from cardiovascular diseases. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed the lowest all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in the highest OBS quartile (Q4) and the highest mortality in the lowest quartile (Q1) (p < 0.001). In the fully adjusted model, multivariable Cox regression revealed that each unit increase in OBS was linked to a 1.8 % decrease in all-cause mortality risk (HR 0.982, 95 % CI 0.976-0.987, p < 0.0001) and a 4 % decrease in cardiovascular mortality risk (HR 0.960, 95 % CI 0.949-0.970, p < 0.0001). Compared to Q1, those in Q4 had significantly lower all-cause mortality (HR 0.719, 95 % CI 0.643-0.804, p < 0.0001, p for trend <0.0001) and cardiovascular mortality (HR 0.567, 95 % CI 0.455-0.705, p < 0.0001, p for trend <0.0001). These findings were consistent across subgroups. RCS curves showed a negative correlation between OBS and both mortality types. CONCLUSION: Higher OBS is linked to reduced all-cause and cardiovascular mortality in diabetes and prediabetes patients.

Background: The correlation between oxidative stress and female infertility pathogenesis was established, and the oxidative balance score (OBS) can serve as a measure of overall oxidative stress burden within an individual. Prior reports have not addressed the relationship between OBS and female infertility. This study endeavors to investigate the association between infertility risk in female and OBS. Methods: The analysis focused on data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2013-2018. OBS was determined from 16 dietary components and 4 lifestyle components. Multivariate logistic regression was employed to investigate the relationship between OBS and female infertility. Further stratified analysis was conducted to examine the associations across various subgroups. To elucidate the dose-response relationship between infertility risk in female and OBS, a restricted cubic spline function was employed. Results: The study included a total of 1410 participants. Through weighted multivariable logistic regression analysis, we observed a consistent inverse correlation between OBS and the risk of female infertility [OR (95% CI) = 0.97 (0.95, 0.99), p = 0.047]. When participants were segregated into quartiles based on OBS, those in the highest quartile had a 61% [OR (95% CI) = 0.39 (0.2, 0.79), p = 0.01] reduced risk of infertility compared to those in the lowest quartile of OBS. A trend test assessing OBS by quartile also revealed the relationship between OBS and female infertility. This correlation remained constant across both dietary and lifestyle OBS. Additionally, lifestyle OBS and female infertility exhibited a nonlinear association. A sensitivity analysis verified the consistency of our findings. Conclusion: The study found that a higher OBS is associated with a lower prevalence of female infertility. These results emphasized the potential role of oxidative homeostasis in the pathogenesis of infertility and highlighted the importance of follow-up studies and prevention strategies.

OBJECTIVES: This study was to investigate the correlation between oxidative balance score (OBS) and the prevalence of kidney stones in the general adult population. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an analysis using data from the 2007-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) project, including 17,988 participants. The OBS was computed based on previous research, combining 16 dietary factors and 4 lifestyle factors. Multiple logistic regressions and restricted cubic spline (RCS) regressions were utilized to explore the associations between OBS and kidney stone prevalence. RESULTS: Our analysis included 1,622 adults with kidney stones and 16,366 adults without kidney stones. The average age of participants was 46.86 ± 0.27 years, with 50.72% being male. The median OBS was 22.00 (17.00, 27.00). After adjusting for all covariates, each one-unit increase in OBS was associated with a 3% decrease in kidney stone prevalence (odds ratio [OR] = 0.97 [0.96-0.98], P < 0.001). Moreover, compared to the first quartile, the fourth quartile of OBS (OR = 0.65 [0.50-0.84], P = 0.001) exhibited a negative association with kidney stone prevalence after adjusting for multiple variables. Furthermore, we observed a non-linear negative relationship between OBS and kidney stone prevalence, with inflection points at 18.2 (P for nonlinearity = 0.048). Stratified analysis did not identify any variables significantly affecting the results. CONCLUSION: Our findings indicate that a higher OBS is associated with a decreased prevalence of kidney stones in the general adult population.

Background: The integrity of the lateral wall in femoral intertrochanteric fractures significantly impacts fracture stability and internal fixation. In this study, we compared the outcomes of treating intertrochanteric fractures with lateral wall involvement using the ortho-bridge system (OBS) combined with proximal femoral nail antirotation (PFNA) versus simple PFNA from a biomechanical perspective. Methods: Finite-element models of femoral intertrochanteric fractures with lateral wall involvement were subjected to fixation with OBS combined with PFNA and simple PFNA. Von Mises stress measurements and corresponding displacement assessments for each component of the model, including the proximal femur and lateral wall, were used to evaluate the biomechanical effects of OBS fixation on bone and intramedullary nail stability. Results: Using PFNA alone to fix intertrochanteric fractures with lateral wall involvement resulted in von Mises stress levels on the lateral wall exceeding safe stress tolerances for bone growth. OBS fixation significantly reduced stress on the lateral wall of the femur and minimized the stress on each part of the intramedullary nail, reducing the overall displacement. Conclusion: In cases of intertrochanteric fractures with lateral wall involvement, PFNA fixation alone may compromise the biomechanical integrity of the lateral femoral wall, increasing the risk of postoperative complications. The addition of OBS to PFNA significantly reduces stress on the lateral femoral wall. Consequently, OBS should be considered for lateral wall fixation when managing intertrochanteric fractures combined with lateral wall fractures.

Background: Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) is a novel indicator of the overall antioxidant/oxidant balance, providing a comprehensive reflection of the body's overall oxidative stress status, with higher OBS suggesting more substantial antioxidant exposures. We aimed to investigate the possible relationship between OBS with serum uric acid (SUA) and hyperuricemia. Methods: Data utilized in this study were sourced from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants under 18 years old, those with ≤16 complete data out of 20 OBS components, incomplete serum uric acid data, and missing covariates were excluded from the analysis. OBS was computed by evaluating 16 nutrients and 4 lifestyle factors, encompassing 5 pro-oxidants and 15 antioxidants, guided by a priori knowledge of their relationship with oxidative stress. Results: A total of 1,5096 individuals were included in our analysis with 49.7% being male, and an average age of 49.05 ± 17.56 years. The mean OBS was 19.76 ± 7.17. Hyperuricemia was present in 19.28% of participants. Due to the right-skewed distribution of the OBS, a natural log transformation was applied to address this issue, and Quartiles of lnOBS 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.10-2.56 (N=3526), 2.64-2.94 (N=3748), 3.00-3.22 (N=4026), and 3.26-3.61 (N=3796), respectively. Multivariable logistic regression showed that higher lnOBS quantiles were correlated with lower serum uric acid levels. Compared with the lowest lnOBS quantile, participants in the highest lnOBS quantile had a significant serum uric acid decrease of 16.94 µmol/L for each unit increase in lnOBS (ß=-16.94, 95% CI: -20.44, -13.45). Similar negative associations were observed in the second-highest (ß=-8.07, 95% CI: -11.45, -4.69) and third-highest (ß=-11.69, 95% CI: -15.05, -8.34) lnOBS quantiles. The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hyperuricemia in Quartiles 1, 2, 3, and 4 were 1.00, 0.84 (95% CI: 0.75, 0.95), 0.78 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.88), and 0.62 (95% CI: 0.55, 0.71), respectively. Compared to Quartile 1, participants in Quartile 4 had a 38% lower prevalence of hyperuricemia. Subgroup analysis and interaction test showed that there was a significant dependence of sex between OBS and serum uric acid (p for interaction <0.05), but not hyperuricemia (p for interaction >0.05). Subgroup analysis stratified by age, BMI, hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia showed there is no significant dependence on these negative correlations (all p for interaction >0.05). Conclusions: The serum uric acid levels and prevalence of hyperuricemia in US adults exhibited a negative association with OBS. By exploring this connection, our research aims to gain a better understanding of how oxidative balance affects the prevalence of hyperuricemia. This could provide valuable insights for developing preventive strategies and interventions for hyperuricemia. Additional large-scale prospective studies are required to explore the role of OBS in hyperuricemia further.

Background: Growing evidence suggests a link between vitamin K (VK) intake and depression, although the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. We aimed to investigate whether oxidative balance scores (OBS) mediate the association between VK intake and depression in participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. Methods: We analyzed data from 30,408 individuals. Dietary VK intake served as the independent variable, depression symptoms as the outcome variable, and OBS as the mediator. Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic splines assessed the associations. Mediation analysis was conducted to evaluate the potential mediating role of OBS. Results: Higher dietary VK intake was associated with lower depression risk in the multivariate model. Compared to the lowest log2 VK quartile, those in the higher quartiles had significantly lower depression odds (Q3: OR 0.66, 95% CI 0.55-0.78; Q4: OR 0.64, 95% CI 0.52-0.78). Additionally, a 1-unit increase in log2 VK intake was associated with a 15% decrease in depression odds (OR 0.85, 95% CI 0.81-0.90). Restricted cubic splines revealed a non-linear relationship between log2 VK and depression (p for non-linearity <0.001). Notably, OBS mediated 26.09% (p < 0.001) of the association between log2 VK and depression. Conclusion: Higher VK intake is associated with reduced depression risk, potentially mediated by oxidative balance. Further research is warranted to confirm causality and elucidate the underlying mechanisms.

Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS)-one of the main alternatives to perfluorooctane sulfonate-has been increasingly detected in both aquatic environments and human bodies. Therefore, the pathogenic risks of OBS exposure warrant attention, especially its central nervous system toxicity mechanism under long-term exposure. In this study, the effects and mechanisms of OBS on the zebrafish brain at 40 days post exposure were examined. The results demonstrated that at 3.2 µg/L, OBS had no significant effect on the zebrafish brain, but 32 µg/L OBS caused depression or poor social behavior in zebrafish and reduced both their memory and survival ability. These changes were accompanied by histological damage and cell apoptosis. Furthermore, OBS caused the accumulation of excessive reactive oxygen species in the fish brain, leading to oxidative stress and subsequently cell apoptosis. Moreover, an imbalance of both inflammatory factors (IL-6, IL-1ß, IL-10, TNF-α, and NF-κB) and neurotransmitters (GABA and Glu) led to neuroinflammation. Additionally, 32 µg/L OBS induced decreases in mitochondrial membrane potential and Na+-K+-ATPase activity, leading to both mitochondrial structural damage and the emergence of mitochondrial autophagosomes, partly explaining the neurotoxicity of OBS. These results help to analyze the target sites and molecular mechanisms of OBS neurotoxicity and provide a basis for the scientific evaluation of its health risks to humans.

Background: There is limited research on the relationship between Systemic Oxidative Stress (SOS) status and inflammatory indices. Adding onto existing literature, this study aimed to examine the association between dietary Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) and lifestyle OBS (which make up the overall OBS), and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) prevalence at different Systemic Immune Inflammation Index (SII) and Systemic Inflammatory Response Index (SIRI) levels. Methods: This study involved 9,451 subjects selected from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2018. The OBS comprised 20 dietary and lifestyle factors. Statistical methods included Weighted Linear Regression Analysis (WLRA), Logistic Regression Analysis (LRA), Sensitivity Analysis (SA), and Restricted Cubic Spline (RCS) analysis. Results: The multivariate WLRA revealed that OBS was significantly negatively correlated with both SII (ß = -5.36, p < 0.001) and SIRI (ß = -0.013, p < 0.001) levels. In SA, removing any single OBS component had no significant effect on the WLRA results of SII and SIRI. Further subgroup analyses revealed that OBS was more impactful in lowering SII in women than in men. Additionally, OBS was more significantly negatively correlated with SII and SIRI in the low-age group than in the high-age group. Moreover, RCS analysis confirmed this linear relationship. Compared to dietary OBS, lifestyle OBS exerted a more significant effect on Coronary Artery Disease (CAD) (OR: 0.794, p = 0.002), hypertension (OR: 0.738, p < 0.001), Congestive Heart Failure (CHF) (OR: 0.736, p = 0.005), Myocardial Infarction (MI) (OR: 0.785, p = 0.002), and stroke (OR: 0.807, p = 0.029) prevalence. Furthermore, SIRI exhibited a significant interaction in the relationship between overall OBS, dietary OBS, and CHF (P for interaction < 0.001). On the other hand, SII had a significant interaction in the relationship between overall OBS, dietary OBS, and MI (P for interaction < 0.05). Conclusion: OBS, including lifestyle and dietary OBS, were significantly negatively associated with SII and SIRI. Higher lifestyle OBS was associated with reduced risks of CAD, hypertension, CHF, MI, and stroke.

Due to the increasing attention for the residual of per- and polyfluorinated compounds in environmental water, Sodium p-Perfluorous Nonenoxybenzenesulfonate (OBS) have been considered as an alternative solution for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS). However, recent detections of elevated OBS concentrations in oil fields and Frontal polymerization foams have raised environmental concerns leading to the decontamination exploration for this compound. In this study, three advanced reduction processes including UV-Sulfate (UV-SF), UV-Iodide (UV-KI) and UV-Nitrilotriacetic acid (UV-NTA) were selected to evaluate the removal for OBS. Results revealed that hydrated electrons (eaq-) dominated the degradation and defluorination of OBS. Remarkably, the UV-KI exhibited the highest removal rate (0.005 s-1) and defluorination efficiency (35 %) along with the highest concentration of eaq- (K = -4.651). Despite that nucleophilic attack from eaq- on sp2 carbon and H/F exchange were discovered as the general mechanism, high-performance liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (HPLC/Q-TOF-MS) analysis with density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed the diversified products and routes. Intermediates with lowest fluorine content for UV-KI were identified, the presence nitrogen-containing intermediates were revealed in the UV-NTA. Notably, the nitrogen-containing intermediates displayed the enhanced toxicity, and the iodine poly-fluorinated intermediates could be a potential-threat compared to the superior defluorination performance for UV-KI.

Introduction: Oxidative stress status is associated with CKD; however, few studies have investigated this association. The oxidative balance score (OBS) reflects systemic stress status and consists of 16 anti-and pro-oxidant dietary factors and four anti-and pro-oxidant lifestyle factors. Higher OBS implies exposure to more antioxidants. The purpose of this study was to explore the association between OBS and CKD. Methods: We enrolled 8,134 study participants from the 2011-2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and obtained OBS by adding the 20 dietary and lifestyle factors. Based on OBS, the participants were divided into three groups. We performed logistic regression, subgroup analyzes, and restricted cubic spline regression to explore the association between OBS and CKD. In addition, we tested the adjusted model. Results: OBS was negatively associated with CKD (OR: 0.54; 0.66, 0.82). After adjusting for all confounders, when dietary OBS was >20, the prevalence of CKD was reduced by 42% for each unit increase in OBS (p < 0.05). The negative associations of total OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS with CKD were more significant in the female group. When the total OBS was ~20, the trend of decreasing prevalence in the female group was more significant. Conclusion: OBS is negatively associated with chronic kidney disease.

Background: Limited research has examined the association between Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) and mortality, particularly in individuals with Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection. This study investigates the correlation between OBS and H. pylori infection and their impacts on all-cause mortality within a cohort of individuals, considering both infected and uninfected individuals. Methods: Data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2018, comprising 4,532 participants, were analyzed. Logistic regression analyses assessed the relationship between H. pylori infection and relevant covariates. Cox regression and restricted cubic spline analysis evaluated the association between total OBS, lifestyle OBS, dietary OBS, and all-cause mortality in H. pylori-positive and -negative individuals. Results: Restricted cubic spline modeling revealed a linear relationship between total OBS and all-cause mortality, particularly in H. pylori-negative patients. Total OBS, dietary OBS, and lifestyle OBS inversely correlated with H. pylori infection, even after adjusting for confounders. Higher dietary OBS was associated with decreased mortality risk exclusively in H. pylori-positive individuals, while lifestyle OBS was associated with mortality only in H. pylori-negative individuals. These findings underscore the complex relationships between OBS, H. pylori infection, and mortality, stressing the importance of infection status in assessing oxidative balance's impact on health. Conclusion: In this sample, higher OBS was associated with lower H. pylori infection risks. Dietary OBS correlated significantly with all-cause mortality in H. pylori-positive individuals, while lifestyle OBS was notably associated with mortality in H. pylori-negative participants. Further research is necessary to elucidate the underlying mechanisms and clinical implications of these findings.

Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) is one of the key alternatives to perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). Its widespread tendency has increased extensive contamination in the aquatic environment. However, the present treatment technology for OBS exhibited insignificant adsorption capacity and long adsorption time. In this study, three proportions (1:5, 3:5, and 10:1) of chitosan-modified amino-driven graphene oxide (CS-GO) were innovated to strengthen the OBS adsorption capacity, compared with graphene oxide (GO) and graphene (GH). Through the characterization of SEM, BET, and FTIR, it was discovered that CS was synthetized on GO surfaces successfully with a low specific surface area. Subsequently, batch single influence factor studies on OBS removal from simulated wastewater were investigated. The optimum removal efficiency of OBS could be achieved up to 95.4% within 2 h when the adsorbent was selected as CS-GO (10:1), the dosage was 2 mg, and the pH was 3. The addition of inorganic ions could promote the adsorption efficiency of OBS. In addition, CS-GO presented the maximum adsorption energy due to additional functional groups of -NH3, and electrostatic interaction was the foremost motive for improving the adsorption efficiency of OBS. Moreover, OBS exhibited the fastest diffusion coefficient in the CS-GO-OBS solution, which is consistent with the fitting results of adsorption kinetics.

BACKGROUND: The intricate interaction between oxidative stress and atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) is an essential area of research because of the potential role of oxidative homeostasis in regulating ASCVD risk. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the oxidative balance score (OBS) and the 10-years risk of ASCVD to gain insight into how oxidative balance affects cardiovascular health. METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2020 data (40-79 age group), exploring OBS's link to 10-years ASCVD risk. OBS categorized dietary and lifestyle factors. Multivariate logistic regression controlled for age, sex, race, and demographics. A restricted cubic spline examined linear relationships; robustness was ensured through subgroup analyses. RESULTS: Analysis of 4955 participants reveals a negative association between OBS and 10-years ASCVD risk. Continuous OBS adjusted OR: 0.97 (95% CI: 0.95∼0.99, p < .001). Quartile analysis shows reduced risk in Q2 0.88 (95% CI: 0.63∼1.22, p = .43), Q3 0.92 (95% CI: 0.66∼1.28, p = .614), and Q4 0.59 (95% CI: 0.42∼0.83, p = .002) compare Q1. Quartile analysis indicated decreasing risk in higher OBS quartiles. Lifestyle OBS and Dietary OBS demonstrated similar trends. Stratified analyses highlight race and hypertension as effect modifiers (p < .05). CONCLUSION: Our study suggests an association between higher OBS and a reduced 10-years ASCVD risk. However, causation should not be inferred, and in the future, more extensive clinical and fundamental research is required to delve deeper into this association.

As an alternative for perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), sodium p-perfluorononyloxybenzene sulfonate (OBS) has been widely used in petroleum, fire-fighting materials, and other industries. In order to efficiently and economically remove OBS contaminations from water bodies, in this study, a ternary heterojunction was constructed by coupling BiOBr and BiOI@Bi5O7I for improving the redox capacity and carrier separation ability of the material and investigating the effect of the doping ratios of BiOBr and BiOI@ Bi5O7I on the performance of the catalysts. Furthermore, the effects on the degradation of OBS were also explored by adjusting different catalyst doping ratios, OBS concentrations, catalyst amounts, and pH values. It was observed that when the concentration of OBS was 50 mg/L, the amount of catalyst used was 0.5 g/L, and the pH was not changed. The application of BiOBr/BiOI@ Bi5O7I consisting of 25% BiOBr and 75% BiOI@ Bi5O7I showed excellent stability and adsorption degradation performance for OBS, and almost all of the OBS in the aqueous solution could be removed. The removal rate of OBS by BiOBr/BiOI@ Bi5O7I was more than 20% higher than that of OBS by BiOI@Bi5O7I and BiOBr when the OBS concentration was 100 mg/L. In addition, the reaction rate constants of BiOBr/BiOI@ Bi5O7I were 2.4 and 10.8 times higher than those of BiOI@ Bi5O7I and BiOBr, respectively. Therefore, the BiOBr/BiOI@ Bi5O7I ternary heterojunction can be a novel type of heterojunction for the efficient degradation of OBS in water bodies.

Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a global health concern that threatens human well-being. The oxidative balance score (OBS) is a tool to identify the level of oxidative stress that is correlated with MetS risk. However, association between OBS and MetS and its components has not been reported. Methods: This cross-sectional study included adult individuals with complete OBS and MetS data from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2011-2018. A weighted logistic regression analysis was conducted to identify the association of the total, dietary, and lifestyle OBS scores with MetS. Subgroup analyses and restricted cubic splines were used to further explore associations. Results: In total, 10,025 eligible adult individuals (51.48% were males at a median age of 46 years) were included, with a MetS prevalence of 29.98%. In fully adjusted model, higher total OBS was associated with reduced risk of MetS (Q3 vs. Q1: odds ratio [OR] = 0.57, 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.46-0.71, p < 0.001; Q4 vs. Q1: OR = 0.42, 95% CI, 0.33-0.53, p < 0.001; P for trend <0.001). Significant differences were observed in the relationship between dietary OBS and lifestyle OBS and MetS risk (continuous dietary OBS: OR = 0.97, 95% CI, 0.96-0.98, p < 0.001; continuous lifestyle OBS: OR = 0.61, 95% CI, 0.58-0.64, p < 0.001), as well as negative relationship between total OBS and risk of five MetS components (all p < 0.05). Subgroup analysis showed marital status modified the negative association between OBS and MetS in subgroup analysis (P for interaction = 0.014). Moreover, a nonlinear correlation between OBS and MetS (including its components) was found, further elucidating associations (all p < 0.05). Restricted cubic splines demonstrated not obviously U-shape correlation between OBS and MetS components (elevated triglyceride and blood pressure). Conclusion: This study suggests a strong association between the OBS and MetS and its components. Our data indicated that a higher OBS score was correlated with a decreased risk of MetS and its components in a nonlinear manner. Hence, the OBS may serve as an effective marker for identifying individuals with MetS, with a higher score indicating a predominance of more antioxidants.

Effects of dry and wet grind on peanut oil and protein yield, oil bodies (OBs) stability, fatty acid composition, protein composition and functional characteristics were systematically analyzed. Results showed that peanut oil and protein yields reached highest at dry grind 90 s (92.56% and 83.05%, respectively), while peanut oil and protein yields were 94.58% and 85.36%, respectively, at wet grind 120 s. Peanut oil and protein yields by wet grind was 2.18% and 2.78% higher than that of dry grind, respectively. Surface protein concentration (Г) and absolute value of zeta potential of OBs extracted by wet grind (WOBs) were 11.53 mg/m 2 and 18.51 mV, respectively, which were higher than OBs extracted by dry grind (DOBs), indicating stability of WOBs was higher than DOBs. Relative contents of oleic acid and linoleic acid in peanut oil, essential and hydrophobic amino acids in protein extracted by wet grind were higher than dry grind. There was little difference in protein composition between wet and dry grind, but thermal denaturation degree of protein obtained by wet grind was lower than dry grind. Solubility, oil retention, emulsion stability, foaming and foam stability of protein obtained by wet grind were better than dry grind. Results from this study provided theoretical basis for grind pretreatment selection of aqueous enzymatic method.

BACKGROUND: Migraine is implicated in oxidative stress. The oxidative balance score (OBS) assesses the combined impact of diet and lifestyle on oxidative and antioxidant balance in diseases. However, the association between OBS and migraine remains underexplored. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to examine the relationship between OBS and severe headaches or migraines among American adults. METHODS: This cross-sectional study utilized data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2004, defining severe headaches or migraine via self-reports and calculating OBS from 16 diaries and 4 lifestyle factors. Multivariable weighted logistic regression models were used to explore the OBS-migraine relationship, with stratified analysis for result validation. RESULTS: The study included 6,653 participants (average age 45.6, 52.1% male), and 19.1% reported severe headaches or migraines. There was a significant inverse association between OBS and severe headache or migraine, with an adjusted odds ratio (OR) of 0.97 (95% [confidence interval] CI: 0.96, 0.98, p < 0.001). The highest OBS tertile had an adjusted OR of 0.58 (95% CI: 0.47, 0.73) compared to the lowest. This pattern was consistent across sexes, with an adjusted OR of 0.98 (0.95, 1.00) in males and 0.97 (0.95, 1.00) in females. The adjusted OR for migraine was 0.61 (0.44, 0.87) and 0.54 (0.37, 0.79) in the highest tertile for males and females, respectively. CONCLUSION: The study highlights a significant association between OBS and severe headaches or migraines, suggesting the potential role of oxidative stress in these conditions. The findings emphasize the importance of a balanced, antioxidant-rich diet and lifestyle in managing severe headaches or migraine.

Sodium p-perfluorous nonenoxybenzenesulfonate (OBS) is a novel alternative to perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), with environmental health risks largely unknown. The present study aims to unravel the adipogenesis effects and underlying molecular initiating events of OBS, which are crucial for understanding and predicting its adverse outcome. In undifferentiated human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs), exposure to 1-100 nM of OBS for 7 days stimulated reactive oxygen species production. In the subsequent multipotent differentiation, hMSCs favored adipogenesis and repressed osteogenesis. The point of departure (PoD) for cellular responses of OBS was 38.85 nM, higher than PFOS (0.39 nM). Notably, OBS/PFOS co-exposure inhibited osteogenesis and synergistically promoted adipogenesis. Consistently, the expression of adipogenic marker genes was up-regulated, while that of osteogenic marker genes was down-regulated. The decreased adiponectin and elevated tumor necrosis factor α (TNFα) secretion were observed in differentiated cells exposed to the mixture of OBS and PFOS. The co-treatment of a peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ) antagonist alleviated the adipogenic effects of PFOS and its combination with OBS. Moreover, OBS/PFOS co-exposure induced peroxisome PPARγ activation in reporter gene assays, and increased formation of PPARγ - retinoid X receptor α (RXRα) heterodimers measured by co-immunoprecipitation assays. Molecular docking showed interaction energy of OBS (-20.7 kcal/mol) with intact PPARγ-RXRα complex was lower than that of PFOS (-25.9 kcal/mol). Overall, single OBS exhibited lower potency in inducing adipogenesis but is comparable to PFOS in repressing osteogenesis, whereas OBS/PFOS co-exposure increases interaction with PPARγ-RXRα heterodimers, resulting in the synergistic activation of PPARγ, ultimately enhancing adipogenesis at the expense of osteogenic differentiation. The results indicate the potential health risks of increased obesity and decreased bone density caused by OBS and its co-exposure with PFOS, as well as other perfluorinated alkylated substances mixtures.

BACKGROUND: Preeclampsia is associated with the incidence of common fetal problems including intra-uterine growth restriction (IUGR), premature delivery oligohydramnios, placental abruption, fetal discomfort, and intrauterine fetal death. Pregnant women are not well-informed about preeclampsia, including its symptoms, risk factors, and consequences. The aim of the current study is to evaluate the awareness of preeclampsia and its associated factors among women in the Al Baha region, Saudi Arabia. METHODOLOGY: An observational cross-sectional design was employed to assess the awareness of preeclampsia and its associated factors among women in the Al Baha region of Saudi Arabia. Data was collected from April 2023 to September 2023. A questionnaire was designed to gather information on participants' sociodemographic characteristics (such as age, educational level, and residency) and their awareness of preeclampsia, including knowledge about signs/symptoms, risk factors, and complications. RESULTS: In the current study, we included 485 pregnant women. The majority of participants were aged 40 years or older (37.5%), followed by those aged 35-39 (20.4%). Among the participants, 70.9% confirmed that they had heard about pre-eclampsia before. The most common signs and symptoms were high blood pressure (47.4%), increased protein in urine (40.2%), continuous headache (39.2%), and vomiting/nausea (40.0%). Participants demonstrated awareness of obesity (29.7%), diabetes mellitus (35.5%), chronic hypertension (47.0%), and chronic kidney disease (31.3%) as major risk factors. Participants were aware of potential risks such as kidney disorders (34.6%), heart disorders (23.7%), and preterm delivery (50.9%). The analysis reveals that younger participants below 20 years old (3.3%) and lower educational levels (5.6%) had lower awareness of preeclampsia compared to older age groups. CONCLUSION: The findings of this study highlight a reasonable level of preeclampsia awareness and knowledge among Saudi Arabian women residing in the Al Baha region. While the majority of participants were familiar with preeclampsia, there were significant knowledge gaps regarding the precise symptoms, risk factors, and consequences of the condition.
