ABSTRACTNon-communicable diseases (NCDs) are a major contributor to the global burden of disease, increasingly impacting low-income and marginalised populations in low- and middle-income countries such as Sri Lanka. Microfinance could be a potential approach to target NCDs. Using an ethnographic approach with thematic analysis, this study explored the nexus between microfinance and NCD outcomes. In-depth interviews were conducted with 29 micro-loan borrowing women across 15 field sites within Puttalam district in Sri Lanka. The findings revealed that perceived increases in income from microfinance loans contributed to enhanced household health savings ability, enabling the purchase of medicines bought out-of-pocket and from privately owned pharmacies, and spending for NCD-relevant health emergencies and health-related transportation. Additionally, perceived income increases also influenced the behavioural risks, including the spending and consumption of food, and physical activity levels, both positively and negatively. The microfinance networks also influenced women's perceived social support, psychological stress and coping mechanisms, and health information transmission, positively and negatively. The findings from this study provide important insights on how financial inclusion programs such as microfinance influence the health determinants and outcomes relevant to NCDs. This can help address ways to target both NCDs and inequities of socioeconomically disadvantaged and marginalised populations, particularly women.

Introduction: The World Health Organization (WHO) 2030 agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs target 3.4) identifies non-communicable diseases (NCDs) as a key challenge for sustainable development. As one of the major NCD risks, here, we estimated the prevalence of overweight/obesity in adults and assessed country-economic variations using meta-analysis. Methods: The latest STEPwise approach to NCD risk factor surveillance (STEPS) report of WHO member states studied on overweight/obesity from 2000 to 2020 were reviewed and related data were assessed further. The prevalence of overweight/obesity was pooled using the random effects model. The subgroup analysis and meta-regression were performed based on countries' economic status obtained from the World Bank's country development index 2019. Study heterogeneity and publication bias were also observed. Results: Out of 73 studies with 469,766 participants analyzed, the highest overweight/obesity prevalence was found in American Samoa (93.5 %), while Democratic People's Republic of Korea had the lowest prevalence (4.4 %). The overall weighted pooled prevalence of overweight/obesity regardless of countries economic status was 37.0 % [95 % CI: 33 %-42 %]. There was significant heterogeneity in the prevalence of overweight/obesity (I2 = 99.91 %; p < 0.001). Subgroup analysis revealed a higher prevalence in high-income countries [60 %; 95 % CI: 47 %-72 %]. Meta-regression revealed a significant (p = 0.001) association and a 14 % increase chance of having overweight/obesity with increasing economic status. Conclusion: The prevalence of overweight/obesity is high worldwide, especially in high-income countries that demands a large-scale awareness campaigns and effective initiatives to control overweight/obesity and the associated risk factors of adults of these countries.

BACKGROUND: With global climate change, the health threats of ambient high temperature have received widespread attention. However, latest spatio-temporal patterns of the non-communicable diseases (NCDs) burden attributable to high temperature have not been systematically reported. We aimed to analyze vulnerable areas and populations based on a detailed profile for the NCDs burden attributable to high temperature globally. METHODS: We obtained data from the Global Burden of Diseases (GBD) Study (2019) to describe the temporal and spatial patterns of NCDs burden attributable to high temperature globally from 1990-2019. Then we analyzed the differences by region, sex, and socio-demographic index (SDI). Finally, the age­period­cohort (APC) model was utilized to explore the age, period, and cohort effects of NCDs mortality caused by high temperature. RESULTS: In 2019, the number of deaths and Disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) from high-temperature-related NCDs was about 150,000 and 3.4 million globally, of which about 70% were in South Asia and North Africa and Middle East, and the burden was higher in men. Among 204 countries and territories, the highest age-standardized mortality rate (ASMR) and age-standardized DALY rate (ASDR) were observed in Oman and United Arab Emirates, respectively. The global burden showed an upward trend from 1990 to 2019, with an EAPC of 3.66 (95%CI: 3.14-4.18) for ASMR and 3.68 (95%CI: 3.16-4.21) for ASDR. Cardiovascular diseases were the main contributors to the global burden of high-temperature-related NCDs in 2019. The age and period effect in APC model showed an increasing trend globally. There was a significant negative correlation between SDI and both ASMR (r = -0.17) and ASDR (r = -0.20) from 1990 to 2019. CONCLUSION: There was an increasing trend of the global burden of high-temperature-related NCDs. The burden was likely to be higher in males and the elderly, as well as in countries and regions with less economically and socially developed and in tropical climates. Surveillance and prevention measures should be implemented with a focus on these vulnerable areas and susceptible populations.

Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a major public health burden and is often undiagnosed in the primary care setting. Untested and untreated, this often leads to renal failure and dialysis. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional study of adults aged 20 years and over, diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension, with no previous history or record of CKD, and attending three chronic disease clinics in the Eastern Regional Health Authority (ERHA). Patients were screened for risk of CKD by using the albumin creatinine ratio. The eGFR was calculated based on serum creatinine by using the CKD Epidemiology Collaboration (EPI) 2009 equation. Results: In total, 430 patients agreed to participate with 61.2% of response rate. Of the 385 with complete data, 357 (92%) were detected as having a high risk for CKD; older patients (>66 years) and those with both diabetes and hypertension had high proportions of risk for CKD. There were significant associations between age, systolic hypertension, and the severity of risk for CKD. Conclusion: CKD is common at the primary care level among adults with NCDs in Trinidad, with many patients having been left out without being tested for CKD. Primary care physicians must take this into consideration in caring for NCD patients.

This study aims to assess and compare the prevalence of chronic diseases by the first-degree Family Medical History (FMH) and also explores the relationship between FMH and selected Non-communicable diseases (NCDs) among older adults in India. The present study collated secondary data from the Longitudinal Ageing Study in India (LASI, 2017-18). The eligible respondents for the analysis of this study were aged 45 years and above, where the final study sample consisted of 65,562 older adults across all Indian states and union territories. The LASI dataset collected responses on self-reported diseases: Hypertension, Stroke, Heart disease, Cancer, and Diabetes. These diseases have a high prevalence among the population and are considered in the present study. Along with disease status, respondents' first-degree relatives FMH were used to fulfil the objective. Descriptive statistical analysis and multiple logistic regression techniques were used to accomplish the objectives analysis. This approach was chosen due to the binary nature of our primary dependent variables. The study found that the prevalence of selected NCDs was considerably higher among older adults with FMH than those without FMH. It revealed that NCDs and the status of FMH of parents and siblings were significantly associated. Based on the multivariate-adjusted model, we found significantly higher odds for developing the NCDs when the respondents have FMH among at least one of the first-degree relative. The likelihood among those with FMH of having hypertension (AOR: 2.058), diabetes (AOR: 2.94), heart diseases (AOR: 2.39), stroke (AOR: 1.62) and cancer (AOR: 2.32) was higher compared to no FMH of respective diseases. Similarly, significant associations were observed according to the different stratification of the number of first-degree relatives FMH. The present study demonstrated that first-degree relatives FMH is indeed a dominant associated risk factor for chronic disease among the older adults of India. This study supports the promotion of a disease history tool for chronic disease prevention and early detection approaches as a valuable measure of NCD risk. Public health practitioners can take several steps to access FMH and incorporate FMH into public health programs for the screening of the risk population.

Tobacco smoking, a significant public health concern globally, is associated with a rise in noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and preventable deaths, with pronounced impacts in conflict zones like Gaza. A cross-sectional study, conducted in 2020, in Gaza focused on individuals over 40 years of age, aiming to identify predictors of tobacco use and its links to diseases like coronary artery disease (CAD), chronic lung disease (CLD), and stroke using regression analysis. The research, based on the Gaza NCD study data with 4576 participants and a 96.6% response rate, found an overall tobacco smoking prevalence of 19.4%, with higher rates among men. After adjusting for various factors, the study identified significant associations between cigarette smoking in men and adverse health outcomes, such as CAD and CLD, with adjusted odds ratios (OR) of 1.67, 95% CI (1.22-2.29) and 1.68, 95% CI (1.21-2.33) respectively. However, after adjusting for independent variables, shisha smoking in men showed no association with these health outcomes. The findings of this study could assist other researchers in designing interventions aimed at reducing smoking prevalence by utilizing the associated factors identified in our analysis, such as age, education level, physical activity, and body mass index among men in Gaza.

Introduction: We examined the psychological burden associated with metabolic syndrome (MetSyn). Methods: We used comparable longitudinal data of older adults (≥50 years) from the UK (English Longitudinal Study of Aging) and the US (Health and Retirement Study). We defined MetSyn based on biomarker assessments (e.g., blood pressure, impaired glycemic control). Using regression models, we tested a range of individual psychological outcomes (e.g., depressive symptoms) associated with MetSyn. We also examined whether these psychological outcomes may explain or moderate the link between MetSyn and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). Findings: MetSyn was associated cross-sectionally with a range of psychological outcomes, including depression, anxiety, loneliness, hopelessness, cynical hostility, social strain, negative affect and decreased positive affect, social support and purpose in life. There was no convincing evidence that psychological factors interacted with or explained (mediated) the relationship between MetSyn and increased risk of developing NCD over 10-year follow-ups. Conclusions: MetSyn and the psychological burden outcomes examined may have independent effects on NCD risk.

PURPOSE: Considering the dynamic influence of environmental, social, economic, and political factors in the emergence and growth of the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) over the years and pre-existing differences, the adverse effects of air pollution on the health and well-being of the people have remained major areas of academic inquiry and policy interventions. The present study examines the global trend of deaths and Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs) attributable to air pollution with particular reference to the BRICS countries for the period 1990 to 2019. METHODS: This study has used the global burden of disease estimates by using different rounds of the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study report published by the Institute of Health Metrics Evaluation. This study has calculated the cause of death and DALYs due to environmental risk factors (i.e. Air pollution). Data analysis has been done by using the standard formula for the calculation of death (mortality) rate and DALYs rate. Similarly, we calculated the age and gender-wise death and DALYs rate by using the appropriate numerator and denominator. RESULTS: The study discovered a significant shift in disease patterns over this period, as communicable diseases like respiratory infections and tuberculosis were replaced by non-communicable diseases such as ischemic heart disease (17.2 million), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (14.59 million), and stroke (17.02 million) as the primary causes of air pollution-related deaths in 2019 at the global level. Additionally, the study identified a worrying increase in deaths linked to neonatal disorders and respiratory infections caused by ambient particulate matter pollution in South Africa, India, and Brazil. The impact of air pollution on public health is evident across different age groups and genders, with people aged 50-69 years, those aged 70 and above, and children under 5 years being more vulnerable. Furthermore, the male population is disproportionately affected by communicable and noncommunicable diseases caused by air pollution. CONCLUSION: The study highlights the need for policymakers to implement evidence-based interventions to tackle this global health problem. The interventions should aim to reduce the emerging crisis of non-communicable diseases related to air pollution, particularly among vulnerable age groups and the male population, ultimately improving public health outcomes.

Basically, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) are lifestyle diseases. They cannot be transmitted from one person to another person. Instead, our lifestyle, genetics, and environment influence our susceptibility to various diseases. In India, non-communicable illnesses and injuries are responsible for 52% of fatalities. The burden of non-communicable diseases and the resultant mortality are predicted to increase if the government does not take significant steps to prevent and control NCDs and related risk factors. According to the currently available research, the top causes of illness, disability, and death in India include hypertension, cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes, lung disease, chronic renal disease, trauma, stroke, and chronic obstructive and mental disorders. Since 1980s, the Government of India has assisted the states through several vertical programs to prevent and control NCDs. However, efforts to prevent and control NCDs significantly increased under the 11th plan. New programs were launched on a small scale in a select few districts. The financial burden of NCDs has mostly stayed the same, though based on past experiences, reducing exposure to risk factors requires focusing on health promotion and preventative actions. The public healthcare system must have the tools and talents needed for effective management, early diagnosis, and screening. Effective monitoring systems, integrated management, and public awareness campaigns are required to successfully implement the program and make services available to all national citizens.

The present study explores the kitchen waste okra peels derived synthesis of nitrogen doped carbon dots (N-CDs) via simple carbonization followed by reflux method. The synthesized N-CDs was characterized using, TEM, XPS, FTIR, XRD, Raman, UV-Visible and Fluorescence Spectroscopy. The N-CDs emits bright blue emission at 420 nm with 12 % of quantum yield as well as it follows excitation dependent emission. Further, the N-CDs were employed as a fluorescence sensor for detection of hazardous metal ions and nitro compounds. Among various metal ions and nitro compounds, the N-CDs shows fluorescence quenching response towards Cr6+, and Mn7+ metal ions as well as 4-nitroaniline (4-NA) and picric acid (PA) with significant hypsochromic and bathochromic shift for Mn7+, 4-NA and PA respectively. The developed fluorescent probe shows relatively low limit of detection (LOD) of 1.46 µg/mL, 1.05 µg/mL, 2.1 µg/mL and 2.2 µg/mL for the above analytes respectively. The N-CDs did not show any significant interference with coexisting ions and successfully applied for real water sample analysis. In addition, circular economy approach was employed for adsorption of dyes by reactivating leftover waste carbon residue which was obtained after reflux. Thus, the kitchen waste valorization and circular economy approach based N-CDs have potential applications in the field of detection of emerging pollutants, and environmental remediation.

Background: There is a limited research on predictive models of fat mass ratio (FMR) in people living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) (PWH). This study aimed to develop models considering anthropometric and health-related factors to predict and validate FMR in PWH regardless of sex. Methods: One hundred and six Brazilian PWH (46.4±9.8 years) were evaluated for body composition using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), body circumference (BC), and skinfold thicknesses (SKs). FMR predictive models were developed using stepwise linear regression, and their agreement with DXA was assessed using Bland-Altman plots. Cross-validation was performed using the predicted residual error sum of squares (PRESS) method. Results: Six FMR estimation models were developed for PWH, with adjusted R2 ranging from 0.43 to 0.72, standard error of the estimate (SEE) from 0.16% to 0.22%, and 95% confidence interval (CI) from 1.03 to 1.15. Model 6, including thigh SK, waist BC, therapy duration, subscapular SK, education years, and abdominal SK, exhibited the highest determination power (R2 adjusted 0.72, SEE 0.16%, and 95% CI: 1.06-1.15). The agreement between DXA-based FMR and predictive models showed minimal bias (-0.03 to +0.04) and narrower limits of agreement, particularly for the top-performing model (-0.33 to +0.30). Model 6 exhibited a high adjusted Q2PRESS (0.70) and low SPRESS (0.17). Conclusions: Our predictive models advance the study of body composition in PWH by consolidating the use of anthropometry for diagnosing and monitoring lipodystrophy regardless of sex.

BACKGROUND: The Ethiopian Primary Healthcare Clinical Guidelines (EPHCG) seek to improve quality of primary health care, while also expanding access to care for people with Non-Communicable Diseases and Mental Health Conditions (NCDs/MHCs). The aim of this study was to identify barriers and enablers to implementation of the EPHCG with a particular focus on NCDs/MHCs. METHODS: A mixed-methods convergent-parallel design was employed after EPHCG implementation in 18 health facilities in southern Ethiopia. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 10 primary healthcare clinicians and one healthcare administrator. Organisational Readiness for Implementing Change (ORIC) questionnaire was self-completed by 124 health workers and analysed using Kruskal Wallis ranked test to investigate median score differences. Qualitative data were mapped to the Consolidated Framework for Implementation Science (CFIR) and the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF). Expert Recommendations for Implementing Change (ERIC) were employed to select implementation strategies to address barriers. RESULTS: Four domains were identified: EPHCG training and implementation, awareness and meeting patient needs (demand side), resource constraints/barriers (supply side) and care pathway bottlenecks. The innovative facility-based training to implement EPHCG had a mixed response, especially in busy facilities where teams reported struggling to find protected time to meet. Key barriers to implementation of EPHCG were non-availability of resources (CFIR inner setting), such as laboratory reagents and medications that undermined efforts to follow guideline-based care, the way care was structured and lack of familiarity with providing care for people with NCDs-MHCs. Substantial barriers arose because of socio-economic problems that were interlinked with health but not addressable within the health system (CFIR outer setting). Other factors influencing effective implementation of EPHCG (TDF) included low population awareness about NCDs/MHCs and unaffordable diagnostic and treatment services (TDF). Implementation strategies were identified. ORIC findings indicated high scores of organisational readiness to implement the desired change with likely social desirability bias. CONCLUSION: Although perceived as necessary, practical implementation of EPHCG was constrained by challenges across domains of internal/external determinants. This was especially marked in relation to expansion of care responsibilities to include NCDs/MHCs. Attention to social determinants of health outcomes, community engagement and awareness-raising are needed to maximize population impact.

Background: In Tanzania, where over a third of the society is impoverished, the burden of NCDs which account for about two-fifths of all disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and one-third of premature deaths has doubled in the past two decades. However, notwithstanding a wider realization of the escalating burden of NCDs across Tanzania, the link between NCD awareness and lifestyle practices at the population level is not well characterized. We aimed to establish the gap between NCD knowledge and healthy behaviors. Methods: This multi-regional community-based cross-sectional study was conducted in 5 regions of Tanzania between September 2022 and June 2023. A 22-item standardized tool evaluating various NCD risk behaviors was used in knowledge assessment and a cut-off of ≥70% was used to denote good knowledge. Bivariate analyses were performed to compare knowledge of NCD risk factors across various NCD risk subgroups. All tests were two tailed, and the significance was set at p<0.05. Results: A total of 5121 individuals were consecutively enrolled. The mean age was 47.2 years and females comprised over three-fifths (60.8%) of the participants. With regard to behavioral NCD risks, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, smoking and alcohol consumption were present in 79.0%, 70.2%, 2.1% and 17.6% of participants, respectively. Moreover, biological risk factors, ie, excess body weight, hypertension, and diabetes were present in 68.4%, 55.8% and 13.0% of participants, respectively. The mean knowledge score was 77.1% and 70.3% of participants demonstrated good knowledge of NCD risk factors. Except for smoking, individuals who showed awareness of various NCD risk factors were found to have significant rates of risky behaviors. Conclusion: Despite sufficient NCD risk knowledge, incongruent lifestyle practices persist, highlighting a crucial concern. This suggests that awareness of NCDs and their risks may influence motivation for change but may not necessarily result in lifestyle modification.

The COVID-19 pandemic has affected the lifestyles of people of all ages, conditions and occupations. Social distance, remote working, changes in diet and a lack of physical activity have directly and indirectly affected many aspects of mental and physical health, particularly in patients with many comorbidities and non-communicable diseases (NCDs). In our paper, we analyzed COVID-19 hospitalized and non-hospitalized cases according to comorbidities to assess the average monthly percentage change (AMPC) and monthly percentage change (MPC) using open access data from the Chilean Ministry of Science, Technology, Knowledge and Innovation. As expected, the infection mainly affected patients with comorbidities, including cardiovascular risk factors. The hospitalized cases with obesity and chronic lung disease increased throughout the period of June 2020-August 2021 (AMPC = ↑20.8 and ↑19.4%, respectively, p < 0.05), as did all the non-hospitalized cases with comorbidities throughout the period (AMPC = ↑15.6 to ↑30.3 [p < 0.05]). The increases in hospitalizations and non-hospitalizations with comorbidities may be associated with physical inactivity. A healthy lifestyle with regular physical activity may have had a protective effect on the COVID-19 severity and related events in the post-pandemic period, especially for the NCD population.

BACKGROUND: While the association between education and non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is well established, it remains unclear whether this association varies by gender. The aim of this study was to examine two critical research questions: whether the association of education and NCDs is conditioned by gender and, if so, what are the factors contributing to this? METHODS: Data from the Longitudinal Aging Study in India Wave 1 (2017-2018) was used for the empirical analysis. The study employs bivariate, binary logistic regression and Oaxaca decomposition analyses. RESULTS: The results reveal that the net likelihood of having at least one chronic NCD increases with an increase in education level for men (<5 y of schooling: odds ratio [OR] 1.18 [95% confidence interval {CI} 1.09 to 1.28]; ≥10 y of schooling: OR 1.43 [95% CI 1.33 to 1.53]). However, for women, the result showed a contrasting pattern. The decomposition analysis revealed that the distinctive roles of marital status and working status in the diagnosis of morbidity for men and women are the key factors behind the gendered heterogeneous relationship of education and NCDs in India. CONCLUSIONS: The study found that it is important to acknowledge the potential impact of self-reporting bias in morbidity data while examining the relationship between education and NCDs.

BACKGROUND: Community medical institutions play a vital role in China's healthcare system. While the number of these institutions has increased in recent years, their construction contents remain insufficient. The potential of community medical institutions in preventing, screening, diagnosing, and treating non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) has not been fully utilized. This study aims to assess the status of construction contents in community medical institutions in Southwest China and examine how these contents influence the medical choices of NCD patients. METHODS: Descriptive statistics were used to evaluate the construction content of community medical institutions. Multiple-sets of multinomial logistic regression were employed to analyze the associations and marginal impacts between construction content and medical choices. Shapley value analysis was applied to determine the contribution and ranking of these impacts. RESULTS: Descriptive statistics revealed satisfactory construction contents in community medical institutions. Notably, factors such as service attitude, nursing services, expert consultations, charging standards, medical equipment, medical examinations, privacy protection, and referrals significantly influenced medical choices. Among these, service attitude, charging standards, and privacy protection had the most significant marginal improvement effects on NCD patients' choices, with improvements of 12.7%, 10.2%, and 5.9%, respectively. The combined contribution of privacy protection, medical examinations, service attitude, charging standards, and nursing services to medical choices exceeded 80%. CONCLUSION: Optimizing the service contents of community institutions can encourage NCD patients to seek medical care at grassroots hospitals. This study addresses crucial gaps in existing literature and offers practical insights for implementing new medical reform policies, particularly in underdeveloped regions of Southwest China focusing on hierarchical diagnosis and treatment.

Tobacco use is one of the main risk factors for non-communicable diseases. Avoiding youth initiation and treating addiction are fundamental public health issues to ensure better health. Among tobacco control policies, increasing tobacco price is the single most effective intervention. It reduces tobacco consumption, especially among youths, while representing a government financing source. This study aimed to assess the agreement with the proposal of a one-euro increase in tobacco price earmarked to health issues among students at Sapienza University. Two convenience samples were surveyed, five years apart, on World No Tobacco Days. Smoking habits, agreement with the proposal and reasons for it were collected. Results from the 208 questionnaires (107 in 2014, 101 in 2019) showed 46.6% of agreement with the proposal (53.3% in 2014, 39.2% in 2019, p = 0.044). Main predictive factor for agreement was being a non-smoker (OR = 6.33 p < 0.001), main reason (64.8%) was it could trigger smokers to quit or reduce consumption. Several factors might have influenced this finding, including the introduction of novel tobacco products and their increased advertisement on social media. In 2024, European Union is planning to update the Tobacco Taxation Directive which could greatly contribute to the reduction of non-communicable diseases and premature deaths.

BACKGROUND: While Cardiovascular disease (CVD) affects both men and women, emerging evidence suggests notable gender differentials in disease prevalence. This study aims to explore and analyse the gender differentials in CVD disease prevalence in India. METHODS: The present study utilizes data from first wave of the nationally representative survey "Longitudinal Ageing Study in India" (LASI, WAVE-I, 2017-18) with the eligible sample size of 31,464 individuals aged 60 years and above. Logistic regression analysis was used to understand risk of CVD by demographic characteristics. Factors contribution to gender differences in CVD prevalence was examined using a non-linear Fairlie decomposition. RESULTS: The prevalence of CVD was lower in men (31.06%) compared to women (38.85%). Women have a 33% higher likelihood of CVD compared to men (OR: 1.33; 95% CI: 1.25-1.42). Lack of education also confers a lower risk, more pronounced in women with no schooling (OR: 0.81; 95% CI: 0.7-0.94) compared to men (OR: 0.52; 95% CI: 0.47-0.58). Morbidity influences CVD presence more among women than men, with individuals suffering from three or more diseases having markedly increased odds (Men: OR: 3.89; 95% CI: 3.54-4.3, Women: OR: 6.97; 95% CI: 6.48-10.11). Smoking accounted increase in (20.52%) the gender gap while years of schooling dramatically lessened the gender gap (-46.30%). CONCLUSION: Result show gender differential in CVD prevalence and underlying risk factors, underscoring the need for gender-specific preventive strategies and interventions. Our findings highlight the importance of refined approach to cardiovascular health that considers the complex interplay of biological, social, and environmental determinants.

RESUMEN

The World Health Organization (WHO) identified the importance of self-care interventions in achieving Universal Health Coverage in 2019. It urges every country to include self-care interventions in their policies and guidelines. To guide the countries in this process, it released guidelines in 2019 and revised them in 2022. However, implementation of new interventions is not a path free of thorns. These guidelines have their own set of strengths and limitations that will differ from country to country.

Ensuring a healthy and sustainable diet for all should be a global priority, and to achieve this goal the food system requires substantial changes. Adopting a one-size-fits-all approach is not feasible, and we need to consider the cultural particularities of each geography and not try to export models that work in one place but may be unsustainable in others. Our discussion will center on two key aspects within this overarching process: (a) the combination of a rigorous evidence-based approach with existing or proposed Nutritional Guidelines and policies required to realize the "ONE HEALTH" and "ONE QUALITY" concepts. Examining the Mediterranean diet and the latest findings on saturated fats will aid us in comprehending the necessary paradigm shift required to formulate new guidelines with substantial impact in preventing the rising prevalence of Non-Communicable Diseases worldwide; (b) the adequacy and scope of the data bank necessary to develop a global, science-based approach.
