RESUMEN

A methodological approach based on rare earth elements analysis was developed to observe human activities in the stratigraphic sequence of Alagankulam. The site was one of the main ancient ports in south-eastern India and one of the transoceanic connecting points between East and West during the Classical Period. The sampled sediments where collected from vertical profiles, areas with traces of firing activities and filled deposits. Major, minor and trace element concentrations were measured by the means of spectroscopic and spectrometric techniques. Data from multielemental analysis were then cross-referenced together with archaeological evidence to map the variability within the site and its association with the detected anthropic activities. The matching of the interpretation of the archaeological record and the analytical data has allowed a combined mapping of visible and invisible traces of human activities in the site, giving a deeper insight of the Alagankulam occupational history.

A 30-month pilot study was conducted to evaluate the potential of in-situ metal(loid) removal through biostimulation of sulfate-reducing processes. The study took place at an industrial site in Flanders, Belgium, known for metal(loid) contamination in soil and groundwater. Biostimulation involved two incorporations of an organic substrate (emulsified vegetable oil) as electron donor and potassium bicarbonate to raise the pH of the groundwater by 1-1.5 units. The study focused on the most impacted permeable fine sand aquifer (8-9 m below groundwater level) confined by layers of non-permeable clay. The fine sands exhibited initially oxic conditions (50-200 mV), an acidic pH of 4.5 and sulfate concentrations ranging from 600 to 800 mg/L. At the central monitoring well, anoxic conditions (-200 to -400 mV) and a pH of 5.9 established shortly after the second substrate and reagent injection. Over the course of 12 months, there was a significant decrease in the concentration of arsenic (from 2500 to 12 µg/L), nickel (from 360 to <2 µg/L), zinc (from 78,000 to <2 µg/L), and sulfate (from 930 to 450 mg/L). Low levels of metal(loid)s were still present after 34 months (end of study). Mineralogical analysis indicated that the precipitates formed were amorphous in nature. Evidence for biologically driven metal(loid) precipitation was provided by compound specific stable isotope analysis of sulfate. In addition, changes in microbial populations were assessed using next-generation sequencing, revealing stimulation of native sulfate-reducing bacteria. These results highlight the potential of biostimulation for long-term in situ metal(loid) plume treatment/containment.

A decisive aspect of site evaluation for construction is the presence of anthropogenic materials occurring in the geological environment. The geotechnical properties of blast-furnace slag were investigated as a potential substitute for aggregates in the construction industry. The basic geotechnical parameters of the slag were determined, which are critical for evaluating its stability, environmental impact, and usability in geotechnical construction. The research focused on monitoring the physical and mechanical properties of the two samples, and also included mineralogical analysis. The obtained results demonstrated that the slag belongs to the category of poorly graded gravel, G2/GP, and gravel with an admixture of fine-grained soil, G3/G-F. In addition, other important parameters, such as the water disintegration of the slag aggregate, the minimum and maximum bulk densities, the California bearing ratio (CBR), the oedometric modulus (Eoed), and shear tests (the angle of internal friction φ and cohesion c), were determined. The results from this paper provide important information for the proper management of blast-furnace slag so to minimize its environmental impact and achieve sustainability in the mining industry. At the same time, it enables a better understanding of the use of slag as a substitute for aggregates in geotechnical tasks. Despite its local importance in relation to the investigated case, the presented study has significant educational and scientific value for the construction sector, where it is necessary to evaluate anthropogenic activities and materials.

Coral reefs are habitats with high animal and mineral diversity and are subject to both climate change and anthropogenic impacts. This article presents novel and relevant data on the Seixas coral reef environment's geological, sedimentological, mineralogical, and biotic aspects in Paraíba State, northeastern Brazil. The aim of this study is to evaluate the processes of reef formation and the diversity of coral reef species in urban coastal environments in northeastern Brazil using a multi-proxy approach. Materials and methods employed to analyze the formation and diversity of biotic and abiotic species include (a) bathymetric survey, (b) collection of sedimentological, mineralogical, and granulometric data, (c) geological and stratigraphic determination, and (d) identification of biotic and abiotic species. Mineralogical slide results reveal that the Seixas Reef is a recent biogenic coral-algal carbonate formation associated with coastline evolution, high coastal sedimentation, and changes that occurred alongside sea-level rise (Holocene-Quaternary period). The diversity results indicate that benthic organism settlement occurred on a consolidated arenite base, with the fauna undergoing continuous succession processes. It can be concluded that this coral reef is highly vulnerable due to the material of its formation and comprises subsectors with high diversity (fore reef) and others with low diversity (reef top), which are affected by both anthropogenic and natural factors. Studies of this nature can contribute to understanding the evolution of coastal reefs, as their proximity to the continent makes them more vulnerable, and they experience direct physical impacts from fishing and tourist activities.

BACKGROUND: In dental laboratories, exposure to crystalline silica can occur during procedures that generate suspended mineral dusts, e.g. dispersion of mixing powders, removal of castings from molds grinding, polishing of castings and porcelain, and use of silica sand for blasting. There is also a large list of toxic agents (acrylic resins, polymeric materials, etc.) used to produce removable and fixed prostheses, but also impression materials and more. Using personal protective equipment and other aids reduces the exposure to these potentially harmful agents. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 42-year-old male dental technician who began to suffer from a dry cough and exertional dyspnea after approximately 15 years of work. The operations he conducted for his job resulted in the generation of crystalline silica, aluminum, chromium and titanium dust. The worker did not regularly wear personal protective equipment and some of the above operations were not carried out in closed circuit systems. The Chest X-ray showed diffused micronodules in the pulmonary interstitium of the upper-middle lobes, bilaterally, and a modest left basal pleural effusion. Simple spirometry showed small airway obstruction in its initial stage. High Resolution Computerized Tomography of the chest showed bilateral micronodulation of a miliariform type, with greater profusion to the upper lobes, also present in the visceral pleura, bilaterally. Histological examination showed aggregates of pigment-laden macrophages forming perivascular macules or arranged in a radial pattern around a core of sclerohyalinosis. Scanning Electron Microscopy and Energy Dispersive Spectrometry revealed several mineral particles, typically characterized by the presence of crystalline silica and metal aggregates. The environmental concentrations of total dust and its respirable fraction were all lower than the relative TLV-TWA-ACGIH, yet not negligible. CONCLUSIONS: The above findings and a multidisciplinary assessment led to the diagnosis of mixed dust pneumoconiosis s/q with 2/2 profusion of occupational origin. This diagnosis in a dental technician was supported for the first time in literature by environmental exposure analysis.

Compared with sulfide tailings, the oxidation and transformation of certain substances in oxidized tailings into more soluble forms may affect the bioaccumulation and biomagnification properties and enhance the risk of toxic effects in the ecosystem. This study aimed to apply the generalized additive model (GAM) to evaluate factors affecting heavy metal leaching from nickel (Ni) tailings. We created an orthogonal experiment table (L18(37)) to evenly distribute the different combinations of factor values. The Ni tailings were immersed in solutions with different combinations of factor values for 16 d, and samples were taken on days 1, 2, 4, 7, 11, and 16 to measure the pH and heavy metal concentration of the leachate. The GAM was used to fit the concentration of heavy metals of the leachate and the initial factors of the leaching solution. The results showed that the pH and Cr concentration of the leachate increased with time and stabilized after 1 d (pH of approximately 7), while the Mn, Ni, and Tl concentrations gradually decreased and stabilized after peaking on the first day. An analysis of the GAM results showed that the Cr concentration was highly sensitive to the solid-liquid ratio (F = 127.8) and tailing particle size (F = 10.7). The Cr concentration of the leachate was significantly higher when exposed to a high solid-liquid ratio or a fine particle size, whereas the Mn, Ni, and Tl concentrations were highly sensitive to the KCl concentration and solid-liquid ratio (F = 77.4, 146.9, and 315.9 respectively). The GAM identified interactions between key factors, which have complex and strong effects on the leaching of tailings and the migration of heavy metals, either promotional or antagonistic. The prediction of the minimum Cr leaching concentration shows that GAM can be used to determine the conditions associated with minimum leaching concentrations of heavy metals and to effectively predict the metal concentrations of leachate. As such, the results of this study can be applied to the management of nickel tailings.

Dust storms are frequent phenomena in Khuzestan Province, southwest Iran, leading to environmental hazards and deleterious impacts on human health. This work analyzes mineralogic and geochemical characteristics of dust sediments at the source regions and in deposition areas in southwest Iran during three dust-storm events in winter and spring 2018. Twenty soil and airborne dust samples were collected and analyzed for compositions of dust at different distances from the source regions in Iraq and southwest Iran, aiming to assess the source characterization and possible mixing processes in the atmosphere. The grain size distributions were also analyzed at specific sites. The results show that about 50 % of the volume size distribution corresponds to particle sizes of above 20 µm, indicating local/regional dust storms of coarse to giant particles. XRD analysis indicates that calcite is the dominant mineral in all the samples, with a high quartz and dolomite fraction. The most abundant major compounds are SiO2 and CaO, while Cl, Ba, Sr, Pb, Ni, Zn, Cr, V are the main trace elements. The enrichment factor (EF) analysis showed that apart from Th, Nb, Ce, and V, all the other elements (Pb, Zn, Cr, etc.) have an anthropogenic origin or represent high amounts of pollutant contamination. High levels of elemental enrichment are attributable to intensive pollution in Khuzestan Province and at sampling sites due to fossil-fuel combustion, gas and petroleum drilling activities. Moreover, based on the geo-accumulation index (Igeo), all samples are found to be contaminated by heavy metals due to prior war-related materiel, oil and gas extraction, and emissions from polluting industries.

The biomonitoring of nanoparticles in patients' broncho-alveolar lavages (BAL) could allow getting insights into the role of inhaled biopersistent nanoparticles in the etiology/development of some respiratory diseases. Our objective was to investigate the relationship between the biomonitoring of nanoparticles in BAL, interstitial lung diseases and occupational exposure to these particles released unintentionally. We analyzed data from a cohort of 100 patients suffering from lung diseases (NanoPI clinical trial, ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT02549248) and observed that most of the patients showed a high probability of exposure to airborne unintentionally released nanoparticles (>50%), suggesting a potential role of inhaled nanoparticles in lung physiopathology. Depending on the respiratory disease, the amount of patients likely exposed to unintentionally released nanoparticles was variable (e.g., from 88% for idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis to 54% for sarcoidosis). These findings are consistent with the previously performed mineralogical analyses of BAL samples that suggested (i) a role of titanium nanoparticles in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis and (ii) a contribution of silica submicron particles to sarcoidosis. Further investigations are necessary to draw firm conclusions but these first results strengthen the array of presumptions on the contribution of some inhaled particles (from nano to submicron size) to some idiopathic lung diseases.

The aluminum dross (AD), which causes numerous problems of its management and disposal to environment is a useful resource to extract alumina. This study explains a novel process to extract highly pure alumina (Al2O3) from AD at a high extraction rate without producing the residues and exhaust gases. An experimental set up was designed to perform the grinding of AD for the decomposition of aluminum nitride (AlN) and the removal of salts. Thereby, the desalted dross was used to detect the optimum alkaline (NaOH) calcination parameters and leaching conditions, as well as the dissolution kinetics of alumina and silica. The leaching residues were used to produce Ettringite mineral with calcium-based compounds (including CaO and CaSO4) to avoid the problems of solid waste disposal from the leaching process. Moreover, to purify the alumina, slightly soluble CaSO4 was added in leaching solution to precipitate silicate and the optimum additive/solution ratio (g/mL) was determined. The aluminum hydroxide (Al(OH)3), precipitated after the carbonization was calcinated at 900.0 °C for 2 h to produce γ-alumina. The morphological and mineralogical characterizations of AD, γ-Al2O3 and the synthesized Ettringite mineral were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) and X-ray fluorescence (XRF). It was observed that activation temperature of 1000.0 °C, Na2O/Al2O3 molar ratio of 1.4, leaching temperature of 60.0 °C, leaching time of 40.0 min, and the leaching liquid/solid ratio (mL/g) of 25/1 were the optimal parameter conditions to extract alumina with the extraction rate at 86.7% and purity of more than 98%. The results of leaching kinetics' study showed that the dissolution of alumina and silica were both controlled by layer diffusion process with the apparent activation energy of 11.4010 kJ·mol-1 and 2.0556 kJ·mol-1, respectively.

A method for quantitative mineralogical analysis by ATR-FTIR [1] has been used first time for analysis of historical mortars. Mixtures of different minerals and gypsum were used in order to measure the minimum band intensity that must be considered for calculations and the detection limit. In this way, the molar absorptivity coefficient in the Lambert⁻Beer law and the components of a mixture in mol percentage can be calculated. The GAMS equation modeling environment and the NLP solver CONOPT (©ARKI Consulting and Development) were used to correlate the experimental data in the samples considered. The characterization of the vernacular mortars by FTIR analysis identifies the predominant minerals of the samples, and in conjunction with XRF and XRD, shows the exact composition of historical mortars, which will optimize the restoration and conservation of monuments, preserving our heritage.

Corrosion of heat-exchanging components is one of the main operational problems in Waste-to-Energy plants, limiting the electrical efficiency that can be reached. Corrosion is mainly related to the devolatilization and/or formation of chlorides, sulphates and mixtures thereof on the heat-exchanging surfaces. Theoretical considerations on this corrosion were already put forward in literature, but this paper now for the first time combines theory with a large scale sampling campaign of several Waste-to-Energy plants. Based on the outcome of elemental and mineralogical analysis, the distribution of Cl and S in ashes sampled throughout the plant during normal operation is explained. Cl concentrations are high (15-20%) in the first empty pass, decrease in the second and third empty pass, but increase again in the convective part, whereas the S concentrations show an inverse behavior, with the highest concentrations (30%) observed in the second and third empty pass. Sampling of deposits on specific places where corrosion possibly occurred, gives a better insight in the mechanisms related to corrosion phenomena in real-scale WtE plants and provides practical evidence for some phenomena that were only assumed on the basis of theory or lab scale experiments before. More specific, it confirms the role of oxygen content, temperatures in the different stages of the boiler, the presence of polysulphates, Pb and Zb, and the concentrations of HCl and SO2 in the flue gas for different types of boiler corrosion.

Mineralogical analyses of clinical samples have been proved useful to identify causal relationship between exposure to airborne particles and pulmonary diseases. The most striking example is asbestosis where the assessment of asbestos bodies in patient lung samples has allowed defining values specific of pathologies. However, this type of analyses only considers the micro-sized fraction of the particles, neglecting the specific impact of nano-sized particles which have been otherwise shown to be reactive and able to induce biological effects. Similarly, in nanotoxicology, the mineralogical analysis of pulmonary fluids could be used as an indicator of exposure to inhaled nanoparticles and could help investigations on the relationship between exposure to these nanoparticles and lung diseases. We designed this study first to demonstrate the technical feasibility of this approach, then to get a clear picture of the metals present, and in what form, in patient lungs and finally to determine if indeed it is worth investigating separately the micro, sub-micro and nano fractions. Broncho-alveolar lavages were recovered from 100 patients suffering from interstitial lung diseases. A protocol was specifically developed to isolate three fractions containing respectively microparticles, sub-microparticles and nanoparticles with ions. The metal content in each fraction was qualitatively and quantitatively characterized. Results showed significant differences between the three fractions in terms of metal load confirming that the separate analysis of the fractions is relevant. It also means that the assessment of the micro-sized fraction alone, as commonly done in clinical practice, only gives a partial view of the mineralogical analysis.

This report describes the case of a 44-year-old man with pulmonary nodules whose histological analysis initially suggested tuberculosis. The Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MT) culture was negative and a questionnaire revealed a professional activity of brushing and polishing surgical instruments without any protection for 7 years.  A mineralogical analysis by optical and electron microscopy was performed on both a healthy lung tissue biopsy and a lung nodule in a paraffin block. Electron microscopy analysis revealed the presence of metal particles (iron oxide, titanium oxide, aluminum oxide and steel) in both samples. This study suggests that mineralogical analysis combined with a questionnaire on dust exposure could help redirect the diagnosis of a dust-related disease.

This paper focuses on developing and implementing a method of quantitative mineralogical analysis of urinary stones based on powder diffraction data analysis using 4 Topas (Bruker) software. Mineralogical composition of 100 urinary stones from urolithiasis patients living in Ivanovo region was examined. More than 70% of stones consisted of calcium oxalate monohydrate (COM) and calcium oxalate dihydrate (COD), and their mixtures with hydroxylapatite. Forty four percent of urinary stones consisted of one component (COM, uric acid (UA) or, less frequently, hydroxyapatite (HA); 56% of urinary stones comprised two, three or four components. The most common mineral was COM (more than 70% of cases), the rarest were calcium oxalate trihydrate (CT), brushite and newberrite. The most common combinations of minerals in mixed stones were COM+HA, COM+COD and COM+COD+HA. The texture, the surface composition and its changes in the course of chemolysis in different types of stones were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray microanalysis (XRM). Implications for using analytical chemical and physical techniques for the diagnosis and treatment of urolithiasis were discussed.

The 1930 International Labour Office Conference on silicosis in Johannesburg identified silicosis by setting a medicolegal framework to its nosology: as with other occupational illnesses, its medical content was fixed under economic pressure. This article follows a reading of all the proceedings of this conference (debates and reports of experts) to examine their potential impact on the etiology and nosology of other diseases, specifically sarcoidosis and pulmonary alveolar proteinosis (PAP), "idiopathic" diseases in which inorganic particles may be involved. We propose renewed study of the role of inorganic particles in these diseases. To do this, we propose to mobilize detection means such as mineralogical analysis and electron microscopy and in depth interviewing that are currently seldom used in France, in order to establish diagnosis and the potential occupational and environmental origin of these diseases.

As dust is one of the byproducts originating in the mechanical recycling process of waste printed circuit boards such as crushing and separating, from the viewpoints of resource reuse and environmental protection, an effective recycling method to recover valuable materials from this kind of dust is in urgent need. In this paper, detailed mineralogical analysis on the dust collected from a typical recycling line of waste printed circuit boards is investigated by coupling several analytical techniques. The results demonstrate that there are 73.1wt.% organic matters, 4.65wt.% Al, 4.55wt.% Fe, 2.67wt.% Cu and 1.06wt.% Pb in the dust, which reveals the dust is worthy of reuse and harmful to environment. The concentration ratios of Fe, Mn and Zn can reach 12.35, 12.33 and 6.67 respectively by magnetic separation. The yield of dust in each size fraction is nonuniform, while the yield of -0.75mm size fraction is up to 51.15wt.%; as the particle size decreases, the content of liberated metals and magnetic materials increase, and metals are mainly in elemental forms. The F, Cl and Br elements combing to C in the dust would make thermal treatment dangerous to the environment. Based on these results, a flowsheet to recycle the dust is proposed.

The distribution of mercury in the soil, sediment and river water around the artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) area along the Cikaniki River, West Java, Indonesia, was investigated. The total mercury concentration (T-Hg) in the forest soil ranged from 0.11 to 7.0mgkg(-1), and the highest value was observed at the ASGM village. In the vertical T-Hg profile around the villages, the highest value was observed at the soil surface, and the concentration decreased with depth. This result suggested that the mercury released by mining activity was dispersed through the atmosphere and deposited on the surface. The total organic carbon content (TOC) showed a similar vertical profile as the T-Hg, and a linear relationship was found between T-Hg and TOC. Mercury deposited on the surface can be absorbed by organic matter. The slope of the line was larger near the ASGM village, implying a higher rate of deposition of mercury. The T-Hg in the sediment ranged from 10 to 70mgkg(-1), decreasing gradually toward the lower reaches of the river. Mining waste can be transported with the river flow and deposited along the river. The distribution of the mining waste can be determined using the mineralogical composition measured by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry.

RESUMEN

The present research deals with two mural paintings made in 1947 with the fresco technique by Fulvio Pennacchi in the Catholic Chapel of the Hospital das Clínicas (São Paulo City, Brazil), namely the Virgin Annunciation and the Supper at Emmaus. This study regards the materials and painting techniques used by the artist, based on historical research,on in situ observations and laboratory analytical techniques (stereomicroscopy,scanning electron microscopy with an energy dispersive spectrometer, X-ray diffractometry, electron microprobe, images obtained with UV-light), aiming to improve the methods of characterization of objects of our cultural heritage, and to enhance its preservation accordingly. The results lead to the identification of the plaster components and of distinct layers in the frescoes, besides further information on grain size, impurities and textures, composition of pigments, and features of deterioration, such as efflorescences. The degree of degradation of the murals painting was assessed by this way. Our data suggest that a single layer of plaster was used by Pennacchi, as a common mortar with fine- and medium-grained aggregates. Differences in texture were obtained by adding gypsum to the plaster.


A presente pesquisa trata de duas pinturas murais feitas em 1947 por Fulvio Pennacchi com a técnica do afresco na Capela Católica do Hospital das Clínicas (São Paulo, Brasil), intituladas Anunciação da Virgem e Ceia de Emaús. Este estudo considera os materiais e as técnicas de pintura usadas pelo artista, baseado na pesquisa histórica, observações in situ e técnicas analíticas de laboratório (estereomicroscopia, microscopia eletrônica de varredura com detector de espectro de energia dispersiva, difração de raios X, microssonda eletrônica, imagens obtidas com luz ultravioleta), visando aperfeiçoar os métodos de caracterização de objetos do nosso patrimônio cultural, e otimizar sua preservação adequadamente. Os resultados conduziram à identificação dos componentes da argamassa e as diferentes camadas nos afrescos, além de informações sobre a granulação, impurezas e texturas, composição dos pigmentos, e feições de deterioração, tal como eflorescência. O grau de degradação das pinturas murais foi avaliado desta maneira. Nossos dados sugerem que Pennacchi usou uma camada única de argamassa com agregados de granulação fina a média. Diferenças na textura foram obtidas pela adição de gesso à argamassa.
