RESUMEN

Two bacteriophages specifically active against to pathogenic strains of the Salmonella genus were isolated. The morphology of phage colonies (size, transparency, and shape of the plaque edge, and halo) and the spectrum of their lytic activity and interaction with microbial cells (adsorption rate, duration of the latency, and reproductive efficiency) were examined. Using genome-wide sequencing, we determined the taxonomic position of bacteriophages and verified the absence of unwanted genes encoding toxins, adhesins, and invasins, as well as pathogenicity islands responsible for antibiotic resistance. In addition, phage stability under different physical conditions and their productivity were studied.

One of the main tasks in expertise of living persons is to determine the harm caused to human health. According to the regulations, only harm to human health caused by an injury and causally related with it is taken into account in the forensic examination of a living person. The establishment of a causal link allows to assess correctly the harm severity caused to human health. In this respect, the study of the effect of biological damaging factor on human body (cause) and the result of this interaction (effect) is a new step in modern science. The article presents the analysis of data from the reports of the Russian Reference Center on monitoring of enteric infection agents for 2016-2021; the results of examinations of subjects who suffered from acute enteric infections for 2018-2019 to study causal links in forensic medicine in cases of acute intestinal infections.

The intestinal mucosa is constantly exposed to commensal microbes, opportunistic pathogens, toxins, luminal components and other environmental stimuli. The intestinal mucosa consists of multiple differentiated cellular and extracellular components that form a critical barrier, but is also equipped for efficient absorption of nutrients. Combination of genetic susceptibility and environmental factors are known as critical components involved in the pathogenesis of intestinal diseases. The innate immune system plays a critical role in the recognition and elimination of potential threats by detecting pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). This host defense is facilitated by pattern recognition receptors (PRRs), in which the cyclic GMP-AMP synthase-stimulator of interferon genes (cGAS-STING) pathway has gained attention due to its role in sensing host and foreign double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) as well as cyclic dinucleotides (CDNs) produced by bacteria. Upon binding with dsDNA, cGAS converts ATP and GTP to cyclic GMP-AMP (cGAMP), which binds to STING and activates TANK binding kinase 1 (TBK1) and interferon regulatory factor 3 (IRF3), inducing type I interferon (IFN) and nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB)-mediated pro-inflammatory cytokines, which have diverse effects on innate and adaptive immune cells and intestinal epithelial cells (IECs). However, opposite perspectives exist regarding the role of the cGAS-STING pathway in different intestinal diseases. Activation of cGAS-STING signaling is associated with worse clinical outcomes in inflammation-associated diseases, while it also plays a critical role in protection against tumorigenesis and certain infections. Therefore, understanding the context-dependent mechanisms of the cGAS-STING pathway in the physiopathology of the intestinal mucosa is crucial for developing therapeutic strategies targeting the cGAS-STING pathway. This review aims to provide insight into recent findings of the protective and detrimental roles of the cGAS-STING pathway in intestinal diseases.

Background: Agricultural interventions are often recommended to address undernutrition in subsistence farming communities. However, intensified agriculture exposure can increase soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections, which are linked with poor child growth. This study examined impacts of the VERASAN public health and agricultural intervention program on preschool child growth attainment (HAZ and WAZ) and relative growth velocity over 7 months [change in height-for-age (∆HAD) and weight-for-age (∆WAD) difference]. Methods: VERASAN was initiated in 15 subsistence farming communities in rural Panama experiencing chronic undernutrition. Activities targeted improved household food security, preschool child diets and growth by intensifying and diversifying household agriculture. Our objectives were to explore the relationship between VERASAN and preschool child growth attainment (HAZ and WAZ) and velocity (∆HAD and ∆WAD) during one agricultural cycle in 238 households. We compared those new to VERASAN with those involved for 1 or 5 years, and identified if agricultural practices, food security, diet diversity and treatment of pre-existing STH infection were associated with growth attainment or velocity. Results: Prior participation in VERASAN did not directly influence WAZ, HAZ or ΔHAD but VERASAN-related benefits had an indirect influence. ΔHAD was positively associated with VERASAN-associated improvements in diet diversity and food security. HAZ and WAZ during land preparation were positively associated with diet diversity and HAZ with food security during harvest. HAZ was negatively associated with children visiting the agricultural plot, consuming leafy green vegetables and pre-existing hookworm infections. Both agricultural season and STH influenced ΔWAD. Children in VERASAN for 1 or 5 years experienced growth faltering between land preparation and growing season, but not those new to VERASAN. In contrast, between growing and harvest, ∆WAD declined in children new to VERASAN compared to children in VERASAN for longer. ΔWAD from land preparation to harvest was higher with pre-existing Ascaris infection whereas it was lower between growing season and harvest for pre-existing hookworm infection. Conclusion: In a context of preschool child growth faltering, malnutrition and STH infections, improved food security, agricultural production and diet diversity associated with VERASAN were associated with improved growth. In contrast, STH infections were negatively associated with some, but not all, growth outcomes.

Objective: Aeromonas caviae (A. caviae) is one of the major etiological agents in human intestinal infections reported to be associated with a broad spectrum of extra-intestinal infections with increasing incidence over recent years. Although previous studies have established its significance as a causative agent of both bloodstream and gastrointestinal infections, the characteristics of A. caviae that cause extra-intestinal infections remain unilluminated.In this single-center retrospective study, we investigated epidemiological characteristics, antimicrobial resistance genes and phenotypes, virulence genes, and phyloevolution of 47 clinical A. caviae isolated from patients with extra-intestinal infections from 2017 to 2020. Methods: A. caviae strains were identified by biochemical tests and matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF/MS), ultimately confirmed to species level by whole-genome sequencing (WGS). Antimicrobial resistance and virulence genes were identified using the Comprehensive Antibiotic Resistance Database (CARD) and the virulence factor database (VFDB), respectively. Phylogenetic analysis of 47 clinical strains was performed by combining with 521 A. caviae strains from NCBI database. Results: A. caviae was an opportunistic pathogen in immunocompromised patients, especially those with underlying hepatobiliary diseases and malignancies. 19 out of 47 isolates were identified as multidrug resistance (MDR) strains. Piperacillin-tazobactam, levofloxacin, gentamicin, amikacin with a resistance rate of less than 10% remained as options to treat extra-intestinal infections. 24 out of 47 isolates exhibited non-susceptibility to cephalosporins and cephamycins, all of which carried ß-lactamase gene, including bla MOX, bla PER-3, bla OXA, bla NDM, and bla CphA. Most stains (98%, 46/47) carried at least one of the virulence genes, but extra-intestinal infections had a low mortality rate. Phylogenetic analysis indicated the risk of nosocomial transmission but revealed no outbreak. However, the emergence of MDR and ß-lactamase resistance genes in extra-intestinal isolates of A. caviae is becoming an increasing risk to public health and requires attention. Conclusions: This study strengthen our understanding of A.caviae isolated from extra-intestinal infections. It may contribute to the management of extra-intestinal infections as well as the prevention and control of drug resistance.

Background: Socio-economic, nutritional, and infectious factors have been associated with impaired infant growth, but how the presence of these factors during infancy affects growth around 5 years is not well understood. Methods: This secondary analysis of the MAL-ED cohort included 277 children from Pakistan for whom socio-demographic, breastfeeding, complementary foods, illness, nutritional biomarkers, stool pathogens and environmental enteropathy indicators between 0 and 11 months were recorded. We used linear regression models to analyze associations of these indicators with height-for-age (HAZ), weight-for-age (WAZ) and weight-for-height (WLZ) at 54-66 months (~5 years), and Poisson regression with robust standard errors to estimate risk ratios for stunting and underweight ~5 years, controlling for gender, first available weight, and income. Results: Among the 237 infants followed longitudinally and evaluated at about 5 years of age, exclusive breastfeeding was short (median = 14 days). Complementary feeding started before 6 months with rice, bread, noodles, or sugary foods. Roots, dairy products, fruits/vegetables, and animal-source foods were provided later than recommended (9-12 months). Anemia (70.9%), deficiencies in iron (22.0%), zinc (80.0%), vitamin A (53.4%) and iodine (13.3%) were common. Most infants (>90%) presented with diarrhea and respiratory infections in their first year. At ~5 years, low WAZ (mean-1.91 ± 0.06) and LAZ (-2.11 ± 0.06) resulted in high prevalence of stunting (55.5%) and underweight (44.4%) but a relatively low rate of wasting (5.5%). While 3.4% had concurrent stunting and wasting ~5 years, 37.8% of children had coexisting stunting and underweight. A higher income and receiving formula or dairy products during infancy were associated with a higher LAZ ~5 years, but infant's history of hospitalizations and more respiratory infections were associated with lower LAZ and higher risk of stunting ~5 years. Infants' intake of commercial baby foods and higher serum-transferrin receptors were associated with higher WAZ and lower risk of underweight ~5 years. Presence of Campylobacter and fecal neopterin >6.8 nmol/L in the first year were associated with increased risk of underweight ~5 years. Conclusion: Growth indicators ~5 years were associated with poverty, inappropriate complementary feeding, and infections during the first year of life, which supports the early start of public health interventions for preventing growth delay ~5 years.

BACKGROUND: The etiopathogenesis of idiopathic non-cirrhotic portal hypertension (INCPH) is so far poorly understood. Altered immunity, blood diseases, infections, congenital defects and drug exposure have been documented in a part of patients with INCPH owing to increased recognition of the disorder in patients with HIV, or various haematological disorders or autoimmune diseases. We aim to discuss the possible etiopathogenesis of INCPH. CASE PRESENTATION: We reported that a patient with intestinal infection of T. Marneffei and hyper-IgE syndrome, a group of rare primary immunodeficiency disorders, was finally diagnosed with INCPH for gastroesophageal variceal bleeding. The diagnosis was mainly based on histopathological features. Transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt was performed and there was no recurrence of melena during the six-month follow-up. CONCLUSION: In the context of immunodeficiency, INCPH may associated with intestinal infections. Thus, screening for enterogenic infection and immunological disorders in patients with unexplained portal hypertension is necessary.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the variations between extra-intestinal and intestinal infections of Aeromonas in terms of strain types, risk factors, drug susceptibility results, and the distribution of drug resistance and virulence genes. Patients and Methods: A total of 188 Aeromonas strains were identified to the species level using housekeeping genes (rpoD, gyrB, and gyrA). The risk factors for Aeromonas extra-intestinal and intestinal infection, as well as mortality, were retrospectively examined in this study. The broth microdilution method was used to investigate the antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. Touchdown polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays and DNA sequencing were employed to confirm virulence and the presence of drug resistance genes. Results: The housekeeping genes identified 188 strains into 7 species. Extra-intestinal isolates generally contained A. caviae and A. hydrophila, while intestinal were A. veronii (p=0.0001). Extra-intestinal infections (158/188) were the main type and accounted for 24/27 of all fatalities. Malignant tumors, hepatobiliary diseases, anemia, and hypoproteinemia were linked to infections. Poor results were associated with septic shock. Using the broth microdilution method, over 80% isolates were susceptible to most antimicrobials, except for ceftazidime (79.8%) and ceftriaxone (69.7%). Except for imipenem, intestinal strains were more susceptible to other medications than extra-intestinal. Using touch-down polymerase chain reaction testing and DNA sequencing, 6 strains, 31 strains, and a strain only had bla TEM, bla CphA, and bla VIM, respectively. Two Aeromonas hydrophila each possessed bla CphA+ bla CTXM-M-9, and bla CphA + bla CTX-M-1 + bla CTX-M-15-like + bla TEM; two Aeromonas caviae each possessed bla NDM + bla CTX-M-1 +bla CTX-M-15-like + bla TEM, and bla NDM + bla TEM. Thirty-four of the 42 strains mentioned above were isolated from extra-intestinal. Act, aexT, and ascF-G, were in intestinal more frequently, but alt, hlyA, ela, and lip were in extra-intestinal more frequently. Conclusion: Aeromonas inside and outside intestinal differed in their clinical characteristics, drug susceptibility, drug resistance and virulence genes.

Gut microbiota-mediated colonization resistance (CR) is crucial in protecting the host from intestinal infections. Sleep deprivation (SD) is an important contributor in the disturbances of intestinal homeostasis. However, whether and how SD affects host CR remains largely unknown. Here, it is shown that SD impairs intestinal CR in mice, whereas nicotinamide mononucleotide (NMN) supplementation restores it. Microbial diversity and metabolomic analyses suggest that gut microbiota and metabolite profiles in SD-treated mice are highly shaped, whereas NMN reprograms these differences. Specifically, the altered gut microbiota in SD mice further incurs the disorder of secondary bile acids pool accompanied by a decrease in deoxycholic acid (DCA). Conversely, NMN supplementation retakes the potential benefits of DCA, which is associated with specific gut microbiota involved in primary bile acids metabolic flux. In animal models of infection, DCA is effective in preventing and treating bacterial infections when used alone or in combination with antibiotics. Mechanistically, DCA alone disrupts membrane permeability and aggravates oxidative damage, thereby reducing intestinal pathogen burden. Meanwhile, exogenous DCA promotes antibiotic accumulation and destroys oxidant-antioxidant system, thus potentiating antibiotic efficacy. Overall, this work highlights the important roles of gut microbiota and bile acid metabolism in the maintenance of intestinal CR.

BACKGROUND: Primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) is an autoimmune disease with increased risk of infections. Here, we assessed whether pSS patients were at higher risk of hospitalization for community and opportunistic infections. METHODS: We selected newly hospitalized pSS patients between 2011 and 2018, through a nationwide population-based retrospective study using the French Health insurance database. We compared the incidence of hospitalization for several types of infections (according to International Classification for Disease codes, ICD-10) between pSS patients and an age- and sex-matched (1:10) hospitalized control group. We calculated adjusted Hazard Ratios (aHR, 95% CI) adjusted on socio-economic status, past cardiovascular or lung diseases and blood malignancies factors. RESULTS: We compared 25 661 pSS patients with 252 543 matched patients. The incidence of hospitalizations for a first community infection was increased in pSS patients [aHR of 1.29 (1.22-1.31), p < .001]. The incidence of hospitalization for bronchopulmonary infections was increased in pSS patients [aHR of 1.50 (1.34-1.69), p < .001, for pneumonia]. Hospitalizations for pyelonephritis and intestinal infections were increased [aHR of 1.55 (1.29-1.87), p < .001 and 1.18 (1.08-1.29), p < .001, respectively]. Among opportunistic infections, only zoster, and mycobacteria infections (tuberculosis and non-tuberculous) were at increased risk of hospitalization [aHR of 3.32 (1.78-6.18), p < .001; 4.35 (1.41-13.5), p = .011 and 2.54 (1.27-5.06), p = .008, respectively]. CONCLUSIONS: pSS patients are at higher risk of hospitalization for infections. The increased risk of hospitalization for mycobacterial infections illustrates the potential bilateral relationship between the two conditions. Vaccination against respiratory pathogens and herpes zoster virus may help prevent some hospitalizations in pSS patients.KEY MESSAGESPrimary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS) increases hospitalization risk for community infections: bronchopulmonary, skin, dental, ear-nose-throat, intestinal infections and pyelonephritis.Hospitalizations for zoster and mycobacterial infections are also increased in this population.Dedicated preventive measures and vaccination campaigns could decrease the burden of infections in pSS patients.

We identified an unusual subtype of a Cryptosporidium sp. horse genotype as the cause of cryptosporidiosis in a 13-year-old girl in Poland who was undergoing immunosuppressive treatment for juvenile rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. The same subtype was identified in a horse the girl had ridden.

Background: Breastfeeding is a protective factor against respiratory and intestinal infections in developing countries. In developed countries, proof of this protection is more difficult to show. The objective of the study is to compare the proportion of children breastfed during their first year in groups of children with infectious pathologies supposedly prevented by breastfeeding and children free of these infectious pathologies. Method: Questionnaires about diet, socio-demographic data and the motive for consultation were given to the parents upon arrival in the paediatric emergency departments of 5 hospitals located in Pays de Loire (France) in 2018 and 2019. Children with lower respiratory tract infections, acute gastroenteritis and acute otitis media were included in the case group (A), children admitted for other reasons were included in the same control group (B). Breastfeeding was classified as exclusive or partial. Results: During the study period, 741 infants were included, of which 266 (35.9%) in group A. In this group, children were significantly less likely to have been breastfed at the time of admission than children in group B: for example, for children under 6 months, 23.3% were currently breastfed in group A, vs. 36.6% (weaned BF or formula diet) in group B [OR = 0.53 (0.34-0.82); p = 0.004]. Similar results were found at 9 and 12 months. After taking into account the age of the patients, the same results were confirmed with an aOR = 0.60 (0.38-0.94) (p = 0.02) at 6 months, but with when considering six variables six variables, aOR was not significative aOR = 0.65 (0.40-1.05); p = 0.08), meaning that factors such as the childcare out of home, socio-professional categories, and the pacifier decrease the protective effect of breastfeeding. Sensitivity analyses (age-matching, analysis by type of infection) showed the same protection effect provided by breastfeeding when it was pursued for at least 6 months and also that the protective effect of breastfeeding is especially true against gastro-enteritis. Conclusion: Breastfeeding is a protective factor against respiratory, gastrointestinal and ear infections when pursued at least 6 months after birth. Other factors such as collective childcare, pacifiers and low parental professional status can reduce the protective effect of breastfeeding.

Parenteral vaccines typically can prime systemic humoral immune response, but with limited effects on cellular and mucosal immunity. Here, a subcutis-to-intestine cascade for navigating nanovaccines to address this limitation is proposed. This five-step cascade includes lymph nodes targeting, uptaken by dendritic cells (DCs), cross-presentation of antigens, increasing CCR9 expression on DCs, and driving CD103+ DCs to mesenteric lymph nodes, in short, the LUCID cascade. Specifically, mesoporous silica nanoparticles are encapsulated with antigen and adjuvant toll-like receptor 9 agonist cytosine-phosphate-guanine oligodeoxynucleotides, and further coated by a lipid bilayer containing all-trans retinoic acid. The fabricated nanovaccines efficiently process the LUCID cascade to dramatically augment cellular and mucosal immune responses. Importantly, after being vaccinated with Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium antigen-loaded nanovaccine, the mice generate protective immunity against challenge of S. Typhimurium. These findings reveal the efficacy of nanovaccines mediated subcutis-to-intestine cascade in simultaneously activating cellular and mucosal immune responses against mucosal infections.

BACKGROUND: There are several studies which evaluated the number of infections caused by enteric pathogens, including Clostridioides difficile in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Our aim was to assess the prevalence of intestinal infections among patients suffering from IBD, when admitted to the hospital due to exacerbation of the disease. RESULTS: The performed, retrospective analysis covered test results for C. difficile toxins A and B along with rectal swab cultures sampled from patients, treated in a tertiary IBD center in Poland, between 2017 and 2019. Main objective was to estimate the presence of any infection, which could imitate or co-exist along with the exacerbation of the IBD. All in all 1471 patients had microbiological tests performed, including 1112 tested for C. difficile toxins A and B; and 359 patients who had rectal swab culture. Positive test results for C. difficile toxins A and B were reported in 358 cases, positive results from rectal swab culture were confirmed altogether in case of 25 samples. As far as patients with IBD are concerned, positive results for C. difficile toxins A and B were detected in 82 cases, positive results in rectal swab culture from patients with IBD were reported in 20 cases. CONCLUSION: Intestinal infections were reported in 14.9% of patients (102/685) with IBD symptoms. Positive test results for C. difficile toxins A and B and rectal swab cultures among patients without IBD symptoms were reported in 35.7% of cases (281/786). Intestinal superinfections may complicate the clinical picture of IBD patients, increasing the diagnostic and therapeutic burden. Appropriate early procedures are thus needed in these patients.

Orally administrated probiotic bacteria can aid antibiotic treatment of intestinal infections, but their arrival at their intestinal target site is hampered by killing in the gastrointestinal tract and by antibiotics solely intended for pathogen killing. Carbon-quantum-dots are extremely small nanoparticles and can be derived from different sources, including bacteria. Here, we hypothesize that carbon-quantum-dots inherit antibacterial activity from probiotic source bacteria to fulfill a similar role as live probiotics in intestinal infection therapy. Physico-chemical analyses indicated that carbon-quantum-dots, hydrothermally derived from Bifidobacterium breve (B-C-dots), inherited proteins and polysaccharides from their source-bacteria. B-C-dots disrupted biofilm matrices of Escherichia coli and Salmonella typhimurium biofilms through extensive reactive-oxygen-species (ROS)-generation, causing a decrease in volumetric bacterial-density in biofilms. Decreased bacterial densities leave more open space in biofilms and have enhanced ciprofloxacin penetration and killing potential in an E. coli biofilm pre-exposed to probiotic B-C-dots. Pathogenic carbon-quantum-dots hydrothermally derived from E. coli (E-C-dots) did not disrupt pathogenic biofilms nor enhance E. coli killing potential by ciprofloxacin. B-C-dots were biosafe in mice upon daily administration, while E-C-dots demonstrated a decrease in white blood cell and platelet counts and an increase in C-reactive protein levels. Therefore, the way is paved for employing probiotic carbon-quantum-dots instead of viable, probiotic bacteria for synergistic use with existing antibiotics in treating intestinal infections.

(1) Background: Neutropenic enterocolitis (NEC) is a life-threatening complication following chemotherapy with high mortality rates. Early diagnosis is crucial to improve outcomes. We designed a large prospective study employing bedside ultrasonography (US) as a novel approach to allow early diagnosis and prompt treatment to reduce mortality. (2) Methods: NEC was defined as US or computed tomography (CT)-proven bowel wall thickness ≥ 4 mm at the onset of at least one of the following symptoms: fever and/or abdominal pain and/or diarrhea during neutropenia. From 2007 to 2018, 1754 consecutive patients underwent baseline bedside US that was invariably repeated within 12 h from the onset of symptom(s) suggestive of NEC. (3) Results: Overall, 117 episodes of NEC were observed, and overall mortality was 9.4%. Bowel wall thickening was invariably absent in the negative control group. Abdominal pain associated with one or more symptoms correlated with the highest relative risk (17.33), sensitivity (89.7%), specificity (100%), and accuracy (96.2%) for diagnosis. The combination of abdominal pain and fever at onset significantly correlated with worse survival (p < 0.0001, OR 13.85). BWT (p = 0.046), type of therapy (p = 0.049) and blood culture positivity (p = 0.003) correlated with worse survival. (4) Conclusions: Bedside ultrasound is a non-invasive and radiation free imaging technique for early diagnosis of NEC and its prompt treatment significantly reduced mortality.

Despite the visible progress in reducing morbidity and mortality from intestinal infections and acute diarrhea associated with them, especially in childhood, the problem of their diagnosis and treatment remains relevant. The article discusses the structure, function and application of lipocalin-2 in infectious diseases as a non-invasive biomarker of bacterial inflammation in the intestine.

Zoonotic intestinal pathogens threaten human health and cause huge economic losses in farming. Enrofloxacin (ENR) shows high antibacterial activity against common intestinal bacteria. However, its poor palatability and low aqueous solubility limit the clinical application of ENR. To obtain an ENR oral preparation with good palatability and high solubility, a granule containing an amorphous ENR solid dispersion (ENR-SD) was prepared. Meanwhile, a PBPK model of ENR in pigs was built based on the physiological parameters of pigs and the chemical-specific parameters of ENR to simulate the pharmacokinetics (PK) of ENR-SD granules in the intestinal contents. According to the results of parameter sensitivity analysis (PSA) and the predicted PK parameters at different doses of the model, formulation strategies and potential dose regimens against common intestinal infections were provided. The DSC and XRD results showed that no specific interactions existed between the excipients and ENR during the compatibility tests, and ENR presented as an amorphous form in ENR-SD. Based on the similar PK performance of ENR-SD granules and the commercial ENR soluble powder suggesting continued enhancement of the solubility of ENR, a higher drug concentration in intestinal contents could not be obtained. Therefore, a 1:5 ratio of ENR and stearic acid possessing a saturated aqueous solubility of 1190 ± 7.71 µg/mL was selected. The predictive AUC24h/MIC90 ratios against Campylobacter jejuni, Salmonella, and Escherichia coli were 133, 266 and 8520 (>100), respectively, suggesting that satisfactory efficacy against common intestinal infections would be achieved at a dose of 10 mg/kg b.w. once daily. The PSA results indicated that the intestinal absorption rate constant (Ka) was negatively correlated with the Cmax of ENR in the intestine, suggesting that we could obtain higher intestinal Cmax using P-gp inducers to reduce Ka, thus obtaining a higher Cmax. Our studies suggested that the PBPK model is an excellent tool for formulation and dose design.

Introduction@#Mongolia is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change due to its geographical location, climate conditions, level of development and lifestyle of the population.</br> The “Impact of Climate Change on Drinking Water, Health and Adaptability” study report has shown that climate change is affecting the quality and composition of drinking water, drying up many rivers and lakes and reducing groundwater levels.</br> There was a strong positive correlation between precipitation and air temperature and dysentery, diarrhea and salmonellosis, while there was a strong negative correlation between precipitation, air temperature and viral hepatitis. @*Goal@#The goal of the study was to reveal correlation between meteorology parameters and some intestinal infectious diseases and human health in Mongolia.@*Material and Methods@#We evaluated climate and certain morbidity (intestinal infections) indicators for the last 15 years (2005-2019) using descriptive survey methods. The methodology of the survey has developed and discussed at the Scientific Council meeting of NCPH, 12th of Oct, 2020. The methodology of the survey has developed and discussed at Medical Ethics Reviews Committee of MOH on 23rd. of June, 2021.@*Results@#On the other hand, the average air temperature has intensively risen for the last three decades since 1990 with the warmest average temperature between 2001-2010, whereas the coldest average temperature has been observed between 1951-1960. In 2005-2009, the prevalence of intestinal infections per 10.000 population was 0.8 cases of salmonellosis, 11.2 cases of dysentery, 0.2 cases of diarrhea, and 39.0 instances of hepatitis A. Throughout 2015 and 2019, the prevalence of salmonellosis fell by 0.1 per 10.000 population, dysentery by 2.9, diarrhea by 0.1, and hepatitis A by 0.1.@*Conclusion@#A seasonal trend in intestinal infections was observed (p<0.001). Strong positive correlation was found between high temperature and some intestinal infections (hepatitis А, dysentery, salmonellosis) respectively.

A child's diet contains nutrients and other substances that influence intestinal health. The present study aimed to evaluate the relations between complementary feeding, intestinal barrier function and environmental enteropathy (EE) in infants. Data from 233 children were obtained from the Brazilian site of the Etiology, Risk Factors, and Interactions of Enteric Infections and Malnutrition and the Consequences for Child Health and Development Project cohort study. Habitual dietary intake from complementary feeding was estimated using seven 24-h dietary recalls, from 9 to 15 months of age. Intestinal barrier function was assessed using the lactulose-mannitol test (L-M), and EE was determined as a composite measure using faecal biomarkers concentrations - α-1-antitrypsin, myeloperoxidase (MPO) and neopterin (NEO) at 15 months of age. The nutrient adequacies explored the associations between dietary intake and the intestinal biomarkers. Children showed adequate nutrient intakes (with the exception of fibre), impaired intestinal barrier function and intestinal inflammation. There was a negative correlation between energy adequacy and L-M (ρ = -0·19, P < 0·05) and between folate adequacy and NEO concentrations (ρ = -0·21, P < 0·01). In addition, there was a positive correlation between thiamine adequacy and MPO concentration (ρ = 0·22, P < 0·01) and between Ca adequacy and NEO concentration (ρ = 0·23; P < 0·01). Multiple linear regression models showed that energy intakes were inversely associated with intestinal barrier function (ß = -0·19, P = 0·02), and fibre intake was inversely associated with the EE scores (ß = -0·20, P = 0·04). Findings suggest that dietary intake from complementary feeding is associated with decreased intestinal barrier function and EE in children.
